سورة محمد

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

ذلك بأن الذين كفروا اتبعوا الباطل وأن الذين آمنوا اتبعوا الحق من ربهم

This is because those who disbelieved followed falsehood, while those who believed followed the truth from their Lord.

كذلك يضرب الله للناس أمثالهم

Thus God sets forth for people their examples.

فإذا لقيتم الذين كفروا فضرب الرقاب حتى إذا أثخنتموهم فشدوا الوثاق

So when you encounter those who disbelieve, strike their necks; until you have incapacitated them, then secure the bonds.

فإما منا بعد وإما بعد

Either from us after, or after.

وإما فداء حتى تضع الحرب أوزارها

"Or as a ransom until the war lays down its burdens."

ذلك ولو يشاء الله لن تصر منهم ولكن ليبلو بعضكم ببعض

And if Allah had willed, He could have made them all one people, but He intends to test some of you by means of others.

والذين قتلوا في سبيل الله فلن يضل أعمالهم

And those who were killed in the cause of Allah, their deeds will not be lost.

سيهديهم ويصلح بالهم ويدخلهم الجنة عنا

He will guide them, improve their affairs, and admit them to Paradise for us.

يا أيها الذين آمنوا إن تنصروا الله ينصركم ويثبت أقدامكم

O you who have believed, if you support Allah, He will support you and make your feet firm.

والذين كفروا فتعسى لهم وأضل أعمالهم

"And those who disbelieve—woe to them, and their deeds are in vain."

ذلك بأنهم كرهوا ما أنزل الله فأحبط أعمالهم

That is because they disliked what Allah revealed, so He rendered their deeds invalid.

أفلم يسيروا في الأرض فينزلوا

"Did they not travel through the earth and see?"

وانظروا كيف كان عاقبة الذين من قبلهم

And look at how the fate of those before them was.

دمر الله عليهم وللكافرين أمثالها

"May God destroy them, and for the disbelievers are equivalents."

ذلك بأن الله مولى الذين آمنوا

That is because Allah is the protector of those who believe.

وأن الكافرين لا مولى لهم

"And indeed, the disbelievers have no protector."

إن الله يدخل الذين آمنوا وعملوا الصالحات جنات

Indeed, Allah will admit those who believe and do righteous deeds to gardens.

من تجري من تحتها الأنهار

"Whereunder rivers flow."

والذين كفروا يتمتعون ويأكلون كما تأكل الأنعام والنار مثوا لهم

And those who disbelieve enjoy themselves and eat as cattle eat, and the Fire will be their lodging.

وكأي من قرية هي أشد قوة من قريتك التي أخرجتك أهلكناهم فلا ناصر لهم

"And how many a city stronger than your city, which expelled you, have We destroyed? There was no helper for them."

أفمن كان على بينة من ربه

"Is the one who is on clear evidence from his Lord..."

كمن زين له سوء عمله واتبعوا أهواءهم

Like one whom his evil deed has been made attractive to him, and they follow their desires.

مثل الجنة التي وعد المتقون فيها أنهار من ماء غير آس

Like the Paradise that the righteous are promised, where there are rivers of water that are not stagnant.

وأنهار من لبن لم يتغير طعمه

"And rivers of milk, the taste of which never changes."

وأنهار من خمر لذة للشيء

"And rivers of wine, a delight for those who drink."

وأنهار من خمر لذة للشاربين

"And rivers of wine, delightful to those who drink."

وأنهار من عسل مصفى

"And rivers of purified honey."

ولهم فيها من كل الثمرات ومغفرة من ربهم

"And they will have therein from every fruit and forgiveness from their Lord."

كمن هو خالد في النار وسقو ماء حميما

"Like one who is eternally in the fire and is given to drink boiling water."

وسقو ماء حميما

"And they were given boiling water to drink."

فقطع أنهاره من خمره

He cut off his rivers from his wine.

ومنهم من يستمع إليك حتى إذا خرجوا من عندك

"And among them are those who listen to you, but when they leave you..."

قالوا للذين أوتوا العلم ماذا قال آنفاه

They said to those who had been given knowledge, "What did he say earlier?"

أولئك الذين طبع الله على قلوبهم واتبعوا أهواءهم

Those upon whom Allah has sealed their hearts and who follow their desires.

والذين اهتدوا زادهم هدى وآتاهم تقوى

And those who are guided, He increases them in guidance and bestows upon them their piety.

فهل ينظرون إلا الساعة أن تأتيهم بغتة

"Do they only wait for the Hour to come upon them suddenly?"

فقد جاء أشراطها

The signs of it have certainly come.

فأنا لهم إذا جاءتهم ذكراهم

So I will be for them when their remembrance comes to them.

فاعلم أنه لا إله إلا الله

Know that there is no god but Allah.

واستغفر لذنبك

And seek forgiveness for your sin.

وللمؤمنين والمؤمنين

And for the believers, both male and female.

والمؤمنات

And the believing women

والله يعلم متقلبكم ومثواكم

And Allah knows your fluctuations and your abode.

ويقول الذين آمنوا لولا نزلت سورة

And those who believed say, "Why was a سورة (chapter) not revealed?"

فإذا أنزلت سورة محكمة

"When a decisive surah is revealed"

وذكر فيها القتال

"And it mentioned the fighting in it."

رأيت الذين في قلوبهم مرض ينظرون إليك

I saw those whose hearts are sick looking at you.

ينظرون إليك

They are looking at you.

نظر المغشي عليه من الموت

The fainted one looked as if he were dead.

فأولى لهم طاعة وقول معروف

It is more appropriate for them to obey and speak kindly.

فإذا عزم الأمر فلو صدقوا الله لكان خيرا لهم

But when the matter was decided, if they had been true to Allah, it would have been better for them.

فهل عسيتم إن توليتم أن تفسدوا في الأرض وتقطعوا أرحامكم

"Would you then, if you were given authority, cause corruption in the land and sever your ties of kinship?"

أولئك الذين لعنهم

Those whom He has cursed.

الله فأصمهم وأعمى أبصارهم

"God deafened them and blinded their eyes."

أفلا يتدبرون القرآن

"Do they not reflect upon the Qur'an?"

أم على قلوب أقفالها

"Or are there locks on their hearts?"

إن الذين ارتدوا على أدبارهم من بعد ما تبين لهم الهدى

Indeed, those who turned back on their heels after the guidance had become clear to them.

من بعد ما تبين لهم الهدى

After guidance had become clear to them.

الشيطان سيحفظهم

The devil will protect them.

سول لهم وأملى لهم

He consulted them and dictated to them.

ذلك بأنهم قالوا للذين كرهوا ما نزل الله

This is because they said to those who disliked what Allah had revealed.

سنطيعكم في بعض الأمر

We will obey you in some matters.

والله يعلم إسرارهم

And Allah knows their secrets.

فكيف إذا توفتهم الملائكة يضربون وجوههم وأدبارهم

So how will it be when the angels take them in death, striking their faces and their backs?

ذلك بأنهم اتبعوا ما أسخط الله

That is because they followed what angered Allah.

وكرهوا رضوانه فأحبط أعمالهم

And they hated His pleasure, so He nullified their deeds.

أم حسب الذين في قلوبهم مرض

"Or do those with diseased hearts think..."

أن لن يخرج الله أضغانهم

That Allah will not reveal their hidden animosities.

ولو نشاء لأريناكهم فلعرفتهم بسيماهم

"And if We had willed, We could have shown you them, so that you would have recognized them by their marks."

ولتعرفنهم في لحن القول والله يعلم أعمالكم

"And you will surely recognize them by the tone of their speech. And Allah knows your deeds."

ولو أنكم حتى نعلم المجاهدين منكم والصابرين ونبلو أخباركم

"And if only we could distinguish the true fighters among you and those who are patient, and to test your news."

إن الذين كفروا وصدوا عن سبيل الله

Indeed, those who disbelieve and hinder [others] from the path of Allah.

وشاقوا الرسول من بعد ما تبين لهم الهدى

"And they opposed the Messenger after the guidance had become clear to them."

يضروا الله شيئا وسيحبط أعمالهم

"God will not be harmed by anything, and He will nullify their deeds."

يا أيها الذين آمنوا أطيعوا الله وأطيعوا الرسول

O you who have believed, obey Allah and obey the Messenger.

ولا تبطلوا أعمالكم

And do not invalidate your actions.

إن الذين كفروا وصدوا عن سبيل الله

Indeed, those who disbelieved and hindered [others] from the way of Allah.

ثم ماتوا وهم كفار

Then they died while being disbelievers.

يغفر الله لهم

May God forgive them.

فلا تهنوا وتدعوا إلى السلم وأنتم الأعلون

So do not weaken and call for peace while you are dominant.

والله معكم ولن يتركم أعمالكم

And Allah is with you and will not waste your deeds.

إنما الحياة الدنيا لعب وله

"Indeed, the worldly life is but play and amusement."

وإن تؤمنوا وتتقوا يؤتكم أجوركم

"And if you believe and fear [Allah], He will grant you your rewards."

ولا يسألكم أموالكم

And He does not ask you for your wealth.

إن يسألكموها فيحفظون

"If He asks you about it, they will keep it."

ويسألكم تبخلوا ويخرج أضغانكم

"And He asks you not to hold back and to reveal your grudges."

ها أنتم هؤلاء تدعون لتنفقوا في سبيل الله

Here you are, calling for you to spend in the way of Allah.

فمنكم من يبخل ومن يبخل فإنما يبخل عن نفسه

Some of you are stingy, and whoever is stingy is only stingy toward himself.

والله الغني وأنتم الفقارين

"By God, He is the Rich, and you are the poor."

وإن تتولوا يستبدل قوما غيركم

"And if you turn away, He will replace you with another people."

ثم لا يكونوا أمثالكم

"Then they will not be like you."
