This proverb is widely known in the Arabian Gulf.

But what is the story behind this proverb?

الصقر معروف عنه من القدم

The falcon has been known since ancient times.

طير غالي الثمن

A bird that is expensive.

وعند العرب حمله على اليد في غير مواسم الصيد من الوجاهة الاجتماعية

Among the Arabs, carrying it in hand outside of hunting seasons is a sign of social status.

الصقر من الطيور الجارحة وغير قابلة للأكل

The falcon is a bird of prey and is not edible.

وقصة هذا المثل

And the story of this proverb

الدور حول صقر تاه من صاحبه في الصحرة

The falcon circles around, lost from its owner in the desert.

فصار يدور عليه وكل ما شاف شخص سأله

He started to go around and every time he saw someone, he asked them.

يا فلان شفت صقر تاه؟

Hey, have you seen the lost hawk?

والكل كان يرد بالنفي

And everyone was responding with a denial.

صاحبنا وهو يدور على الصقر

Our friend is searching for the falcon.

شاف راعي يشوي طيور فسأله

I saw a shepherd grilling birds, so I asked him.

يا راعي شفت صقر مر من هني؟

Hey shepherd, have you seen a falcon pass by here?

جاوب الراعي

The shepherd replied.

انا شفت طير يلحق طير

I saw a bird chasing another bird.

واحد يبي السلامة وواحد يبي الخير

One wants safety and one wants goodness.

فصتهم اثنينهم وذبحتهم وشويتهم

I slaughtered them, skinned them, and grilled them.

تعالي قعد معاي وشاركني الاكل

Come sit with me and share the food.

فصفق صاحب الصقر شف على شف وقال

The owner of the falcon clapped his hands and said.

اللي ما يعرف الصقر يشويه

He who does not know the falcon roasts it.
