Lord Theophilus, many have undertaken to compile a narrative of the events that have been fulfilled among us, just as they were handed down to us by those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and servants of the word.

I have meticulously examined these matters from the beginning, so I have decided to write them to you in order, so that you may know the teachings you have learned are certain.

During the time of King Herod the Jew, there was a priest named Zacharias in the division of Abijah.

His name was Zechariah, and his wife, descended from Aaron, was named Elizabeth.

Both of them were righteous before God, observing all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blamelessly, but they had no children because Elizabeth was barren, and both were well advanced in years.

Zacharias served as a priest before God in his division, following the regulations for the priestly service, and was chosen to burn incense in the temple of the Lord.

When incense is burned, the people pray outside.

The angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing on the right side of the incense altar; when Zechariah saw him, he was startled and afraid.

The angel said to him, "Zachariah, do not be afraid, for your prayer has been heard."

Your wife Elizabeth is going to have a son, and you are to name him John.

You will be glad and joyful, for many will be born because of him.

He will be great in the sight of the Lord; he shall drink neither wine nor strong drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even from his mother's womb.

He will turn many of the Israelites back to the Lord their God.

He will go before the Lord in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.

Zacharias said to the angel,

How can I know about this matter?

I am old, and my wife is also aging.

The angel replied,

I am Gabriel, standing before God, sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news.

When the time comes, these words will surely be fulfilled.

Just because you do not believe, you will be mute and unable to speak until the day this is fulfilled.

The common people are waiting for Zechariah.

He has been in the hall for a long time.

He hurried out, unable to speak to them. They knew he had seen a vision in the temple because he could only gesture to them, effectively rendering him mute.

His term in public office has ended, so he went home.

After these days, his wife Elizabeth became pregnant and hid for five months, saying,

The Lord is watching over me in this way.

I want to remove the shame I have in the world.

In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin engaged to a man named Joseph, of the house of David; the virgin's name was Mary.

The angel went in and said to her, "Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you."

Mary was greatly troubled by his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be.

The angel said to her, "Mary, do not be afraid, for you have found favor with God."

If you want to get pregnant and have a child, you can name him Jesus.

He wants to be great, to become the son of the Most High.

The Lord wants to give him the position of David.

He will be the king of Jacob's family forever.

His country is also not exhausted.

Mary said to the angel, "How can this be, since I am not engaged?"

The angel answered, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you."

Therefore, the one to be born will be called the Son of God.

Moreover, your relative Elizabeth also conceived a son in her old age, despite being known to be barren.

I am currently six months pregnant.

For, from the word of God, there is not a single word without power.

Mary said, "I am the Lord's servant, may your word to me be fulfilled."

The angel left her.

At that time, Mary got up and hurried to the hill country, to a town in Judah, and entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth.

When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting.

The baby in the womb is kicking.

Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, exclaimed in a loud voice, "Blessed are you among women."

The child you are carrying is also blessed.

Where did my Lord's mother come to me from?

When the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb joyfully stirred.

Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her.

Mary said, "My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior."

For she has regarded the lowly state of her maidservant; from now on all generations will call me blessed.

For the One who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is His name.

She has compassion and reverence for her people, forever and ever.

She used her bound arms to unleash great power, and that arrogant person, who was lost in their own thoughts, was driven away by her.

She calls the powerful to be fearful, raises the lowly, satisfies the hungry with good things, and sends the rich away empty-handed.

She assisted her servant Israel, to remember Abraham and his descendants, showing mercy forever.

Just as was said to our forefathers before.

Mary stayed with Elisabeth for about three months, and then returned home.

Elizabeth stayed with Elizabeth for about three months before returning home.

Elizabeth's time came to give birth, and she bore a son.

The neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown him great mercy, so they rejoiced with him.

On the eighth day, they came to circumcise the child, and they were going to name him Zechariah after his father.

His mother said no, he must be called John.

They said that no one in your family has that name.

They gestured to his father.

His mother asked him what name he wanted to give this child.

He asked for a writing board and wrote that his name is John.

They were all curious.

Zechariah's mouth was opened at once, and his tongue was freed, and he spoke, praising God.

The people living around were all afraid, and all these things spread throughout the hill country of Judea.

Everyone who heard this wondered about it, saying, "What will this child become?"

Because the Lord is with him.

His father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied, saying, "Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he has visited and redeemed his people."

He has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David.

Just as the Lord spoke through the mouth of His holy prophets since the world began, to save us from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us, to show mercy to our fathers and to remember His holy covenant, the oath which He swore to our father Abraham, that we, being delivered from the hand of our enemies, might serve Him without fear, in holiness and righteousness before Him all our days.

Child, you must become the supreme one afterward.

Become the prophet of the Most High, for you will go before the Lord to prepare His ways, to give His people knowledge of salvation through the forgiveness of their sins.

Because of the tender mercy of our God, the dawn from on high will break upon us, to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.

The child gradually grew up, strong in spirit, living in the wilderness.

Until he makes it clear that he cares.

In the days before the Israelites.
