叫卖报纸

Selling newspapers

记得三四年前

Remember three or four years ago.

在他们身上偶尔还渗有制服模样的残余

再早就更体面

简直是童子军的礼态

It's simply a Boy Scout's courtesy.

那是中华民国八年

That was the eighth year of the Republic of China.

即西历1919年

北京学生对于山东问题的示威运动以后

Beijing students' protests regarding the Shandong issue thereafter.

因为当时散传单的是童子军

Because at that time, it was the Boy Scouts who were distributing the flyers.

不知怎的竟惹了投机家的注意

For some reason, I caught the attention of the speculators.

童子军式的卖报孩子就出现了

The newspaper-selling children in a boy scout style have appeared.

我在新青年的随感录中做些短评

但就现在的文字看起来

有的是对于所谓保存国粹而发的

有的是对于上海时报的讽刺化而发的

Some are witticisms directed at the Shanghai Times.

记得当时的新青年是正在四面受敌之中

I remember that at that time, the New Youth was under siege from all sides.

我所对付的不过一小部分

What I dealt with was just a small part.

其他大事则本质俱在

Other major events are inherently present.

无须我多言

No need for me to say more.

已经说不清是不做还是散失消灭的了

但那时革新运动表面上却颇有些成功

嘲骂新青年的人们

但他们却是另起了一个冠冕堂皇的名目

这也就是后来又将这名目反套在新青年身上

而又加以嘲骂讥笑的

and further mocked and ridiculed.

正如笑骂白话文的人

Just as those who mock the vernacular language.

往往自称罪的风格

Often self-proclaimed style of crime.

冲气之先

Before inflation

早经主张过白话文一样

I have long advocated for vernacular Chinese.

再后更无可道了

There is nothing more to say after that.

只记得一九二一年中的一篇是对于所谓虚无哲学而发的

I only remember that an article from 1921 was about the so-called philosophy of nihilism.

更后一年则大抵对于上海之所谓国学家而发

The following year was mostly about the so-called scholars of national studies in Shanghai.

不知怎的

I don't know how.

那时忽而有许多人都自命为国学家了

At that time, suddenly many people claimed to be scholars of national studies.

自新青年出版以来

Since the publication of New Youth

一切应之而朝骂改革

Everything should respond to the morning and criticize the reform.

后来又赞成改革

Later, he supported the reforms.

后来又朝骂改革者

现在

李泰的制服早已破碎

Li Tai's uniform has long been torn apart.

显出自身的本相来了

真所谓事实胜于雄辩

又何待于纸笔喉舌的批评

What is there to wait for in the criticism of paper, pen, and tongue?

所以我的英识的浅薄的文字也应该置之不顾

Therefore, my shallow knowledge of English should also be disregarded.

以忍其消灭的

To bear its elimination.

但几个朋友却以为现状和那时并没有大两样

But a few friends believe that the current situation is not much different from that time.

也还可以存留

It can also be preserved.

给我编辑起来了

我以为凡对于石壁的攻击

文字续与石壁同时灭亡

躺废自身也被排除

也即证明着病菌尚在

It also proves that the germs are still present.

但如果凡我所写的确都是冷的呢

But what if everything I write is indeed cold?

则他的生命原来就没有

Then his life originally didn't exist.

更谈不到中国的病症究竟如何

Let alone talk about what the ailments in China are really like.

然而

无情的冷嘲和友情的讽刺相去

The ruthless sarcasm and the irony of friendship are worlds apart.

本不及一张纸

It is not even the size of a piece of paper.

对于周围的感受和反应

Feelings and reactions to the surroundings.

又大概是所谓如鱼饮水

It is probably what is called like a fish drinking water.

冷暖自知的

Only you know whether it's warm or cold.

我却觉得周围的空气太寒冽了

I feel that the air around me is too cold.

我自说我的话

I speak for myself.

所以反而称之为热风

So it is instead referred to as a hot wind.
