En in deze podcast gaan we jullie vertellen over ons interview met Susan Verhulst.

Susan is een Vlaamse tolk die in het Nederlands en in het Italiaans werkt.

Susan is a Flemish interpreter who works in Dutch and Italian.

Zij werd verliefd op deze taal toen zij een jong meisje was.

She fell in love with this language when she was a young girl.

Ze ging vaak naar ons land op vakantie met haar familie.

She often went on vacation to our country with her family.

En ze vond het jammer dat ze niet met de lokale bevolking communiceren kon.

And she was sad that she couldn't communicate with the local people.

We hebben haar een paar vragen over haar carrière gesteld.

We asked her a few questions about her career.

We hebben eerst overal...

... haar opleiding getraagd.

En zij heeft in 2004 een opleidingconferentietalk gevolgd...

And she attended a training conference talk in 2004...

... gefocust op de Europese instellingen in het jaar van de uitbreiding van 12 tot 24 landen.

Maar ze vond het niet echt leuk, want zij wilde niet de hele tijd in een cabine zitten.

Inderdaad werkt ze nu liever bij het tolken van gesprekken.

Indeed, she now prefers working on interpreting conversations.

Bijvoorbeeld in scholen, ziekenhuizen, in de rechtbank en in bedrijven.

Zij werkt ook als telefoontolker.

She also works as a telephone interpreter.

Zij is een van de weinige tolken Nederlands-Italiaans.

She is one of the few Dutch-Italian interpreters.

Daarom reist ze overal rond in België, maar ze gaat soms ook naar Italië.

That's why she travels all around Belgium, but she also sometimes goes to Italy.

Ze werkt als zelfstandige, dus hebben wij iets over de voor- en nadelen van zijn werk gevraagd.

She works as a freelance, so we asked her about the pros and cons of her work.

Ja, de voordelen zijn klassiek natuurlijk.

Yes, the benefits are classic, of course.

Je hebt vrijheid over je eigen agenda.

You have freedom over your own agenda.

Je bepaalt zelf.

You decide for yourself.

De nadelen, maar voor mij minder van toepassing, omdat ik ook een job heb aan de universiteit.

Het nadeel is, ja, je moet elke maand natuurlijk wel de nodige opdrachten hebben.

De sociale diensten ontvingen geen publiek, de rechtbank en de politie hebben voor drie maanden alle rechtszaken zonder de partijen geregeld.

Er waren dus geen tolken nodig.

Dus wij waren ook benieuwd naar de moeilijkheden van haar baan.

So we were also curious about the difficulties of her job.

Ik heb zelf in Italië gewoond in de provincie Cuneo, Piemonte.

I lived in Italy myself in the province of Cuneo, Piedmont.

Als mensen dialect Siciliaans spreken, dan houdt het voor mij op.

When people speak Sicilian dialect, that's where it ends for me.

Ja.

Dat is mijn limiet.

Not all people.

En dan zeg ik vooral de lagere sociale klasses.

In criminele milieus is dat nu eenmaal een factor.

Niet iedereen spreekt standaard Italiaans.

Not everyone speaks standard Italian.

Maar in het algemeen, als je als zelfstandige werkt, moet je je tijd heel goed organiseren.

But in general, if you work as a freelancer, you need to organize your time very well.

Vooral als je ook andere banen hebt, zoals Suzanne, die als docent en vertaalster werkt.

Dit interview was voor ons een leerzame ervaring.

En het probleem is, Nicola, het probleem is als je zo een fout maakt in de allereerste term.
