How did you come up with that?

Wat trek je aan bij de genres dan zo erg?

What do you find so appealing about the genres?

Ja, ik heb denk ik een brede belangstelling.

Yes, I think I have a wide range of interests.

En het een sluit het ander niet uit.

En ja, weet je, het is als je een boek schrijft,

And yes, you know, it's like when you write a book,

het is altijd belangrijk dat er een bepaalde mate van spanning in zit.

En bij trillers is dat natuurlijk een ander soort spanning dan bij romans.

And with thrillers, that's of course a different kind of tension than with novels.

Maar ook romans vind ik fijn als die wat spanning hebben.

But I also enjoy novels that have some suspense.

Dus meestal spelen ze zich ook af in een tijd waarin er nogal wat gebeurt.

So they usually take place in a time when quite a bit is happening.

Waar je wat mee kan.

Where you can do something with.

Dus voor mij als schrijfster is het verschil niet zo heel groot.

So for me as a writer, the difference isn't that big.

Omdat ik bij beide genres met een spanning...

Because I have a tension with both genres...

met een spanningsboog bezig ben.

I am working with a tension arc.

Alleen bij trillers heb je natuurlijk ook een plot nodig.

Of course, you need a plot in thrillers too.

En vaak ook een dader.

And often also a perpetrator.

Dus dat is wel een ander stramiem waarbinnen je werkt.

So that is quite a different framework within which you work.

Maar nou ja, het gaat me alle twee wel goed af.

But well, I'm doing fine with both.

Ja, volgens mij ook wel.

Kun je wat uitleggen over hoe je proces, per boek daarin, hoe dat gaat?

Can you explain a bit about your process, for each book, how that works?

Maar kijk, voor elk boek heb je research nodig.

Er zijn altijd wel dingen die je moet uitleggen.

En voor trillers is dat meer op het recherchegebied.

And for thrillers, that is more in the detective field.

Ik wil dat het gewoon klopt hoe recherche de opsporing verricht en zo.

I just want it to be correct how detectives conduct their investigations and such.

Je kan natuurlijk ook gewoon wel een slag naslaan.

Of course, you can just hit a shot afterwards as well.

Maar als je het uit kan zoeken, dan vind ik het toch leuker om dat uit te zoeken.

But if you can figure it out, then I still find it more enjoyable to figure it out.

En ik heb, nou eigenlijk bij al mijn boeken heb ik wel hulp gehad van de recherche.

En zeker over mijn trilogie over Lois Elzinga.

And certainly about my trilogy about Lois Elzinga.

Heb ik ook drie jaar met hoofdmoordzaken gewerkt.

I also worked on homicide cases for three years.

Ja, dan is het wel belangrijk dat je het goed doet natuurlijk.

En nou ben ik natuurlijk wel al heel lang met de zestiende, vooral met de zeventiende eeuw bezig.

And now I have, of course, been working on the sixteenth, especially the seventeenth century, for a very long time.

So I know quite a bit of those details by now.

But yes, I really enjoy studying paintings from that time, and for me, they are of course photographs from the past.

And for the thrillers, you were also inspired by true events...

En ja, daar maak je natuurlijk je eigen misdrijf van.

And yes, of course, you make your own crime out of that.

Ik zat bijvoorbeeld in de tram en dat was toen vlak na de verdwijning van Madeleine McCann.

For example, I was on the tram, and that was shortly after the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.

En dan zit je toch zo om je heen te kijken.

And then you find yourself looking around you.

En ik zit even voor, nou, dat ik dat meisje zo zie, weet je wel.

And I'm just sitting here, well, seeing that girl like that, you know.

Mijn fantasie slaat dan natuurlijk meteen op hol.

My imagination immediately runs wild then, of course.

En ik zag zo'n man met zo'n blond kindje en ik denk, die ga ik in de gaten houden.

And I saw a man with a blonde child, and I thought, I'm going to keep an eye on him.

En ik wist wel dat zij dat niet was.

And I knew that she wasn't that.

Maar dat is gewoon mijn schrijversbloed dat begint te kriebelen.

But that's just my writer's blood starting to tingle.

And I think, well, just imagine...

Dat je nu denkt van, ze is het echt.

Wat ga ik dan nu op dit moment doen, weet je wel?

Het heeft alleen heel wat tijd gekost voordat ik het boek ook geschreven heb.

Maar dat was de allereerste aanzet.

But that was the very first push.

Dat ik dacht, iemand ziet een vermist kind of denkt dat het vermist is...

That I thought, someone sees a missing child or thinks it is missing...

En besluit het van de achterbank van een auto te trekken.

And decides to pull it from the backseat of a car.

En mee te nemen.

And to take along.

Nou, daar is uiteindelijk een heel ander soort verhaal uit voortgekomen.

Well, a completely different kind of story has emerged from that after all.

Maar dat was wel de eerste ingeving.

But that was indeed the first idea.

Nou goed, dan inderdaad over De Zonde Waard.

Well then, indeed about The Worth of Sin.

Kun je kort vertellen waar het over gaat?

Can you briefly explain what it’s about?

Ja, heel kort inderdaad.

Yes, indeed very brief.

Waarvan trillen kun je bijna niks weggeven natuurlijk.

Of which you can hardly give anything away, of course.

Maar goed, het gaat dus over een vermist meisje.

Well, it's about a missing girl.

En over iemand die niet het kind meeneemt en ermee vandoor gaat.

And about someone who doesn't take the child and runs away with it.

En ja, dan zelf in grote problemen komt natuurlijk.

And yes, then you get into a lot of trouble yourself, of course.

Maar er is ook nog een achterliggend verhaal.

But there is also an underlying story.

Omdat zij op jonge leeftijd bij de Jehovah's is weggegaan.

Because she left the Jehovah's at a young age.

En verstoten is door haar familie.

And she has been rejected by her family.

Dus haar achtergrond speelt ook een hele grote rol in het boek.

So her background plays a very important role in the book.

En dat verhaal heb ik geschreven omdat de beste vriendin van mijn dochter dat echt is overkomen.

And I wrote that story because my daughter's best friend really experienced that.

En dat meisje Soraya, die kwam bij ons veel over de vloer vanaf haar twaalfde.

And that girl Soraya, she came over to our place a lot since she was twelve.

En op haar zeventiende is ze dus bij de Jehovah's weggegaan.

And at the age of seventeen, she left the Jehovah's.

En dus ook, ja, verstoten.

And so also, yes, cast out.

Dus we moesten het zelf zien te rooien vanaf dat moment.

So we had to manage on our own from that moment on.

Dus er was veel bij ons. En nog steeds.

So there was a lot with us. And still is.

And she asked me to use her story for a book at some point.

En ja, er was nog wel wat WhatsApp-contact met de familie.

Maar ik denk, ja, dat is nu ook helemaal weg.

Dus ja, ik vond dat best wel dat ik een verantwoordelijkheid had.

So yes, I did feel that I had a responsibility.

En natuurlijk is het ook geromantiseerd.
