Because we are still very much in silos now, not just at the data level,
but also simply how we organize our care. These are physically separate departments in hospitals,
dat zijn andere experten. Er bestaat niet zoiets als de muco-expert. Er bestaat de
those are different experts. There is no such thing as a muco expert. There exists the
long- or the pulmonologist, there exists the endocrinologist, there exists the doctor who
is concerned with your bones. So as a patient, you really have to piece it all together.

This time I am the guest of Valerie Storms,
at her home in Hasselt on a warm summer day. She graduated as a bio-engineer,
PhD in bioinformatics and currently active in pharma as Digital Health Innovation.

As a child, she was given a life expectancy of 10 years, but in the meantime, she is 40.
Thanks to the progress of science. So we talked extensively about living with
a disease like cystic fibrosis and diabetes, but also about the crucial role of innovation and technology,

Hoe was jullie materialiteit voordat Jutesaling?
What was your materiality like before Jutesaling?
Dat was melding met een kleine kaprikant.
That was a report with a small mischief.
Jouw naam was organs dat rit.
Your name was organs that rhythm.
Wie is Valerie?
Who is Valerie?
Ik ben ondertussen 40 jaar.
I am now 40 years old.
I lived with my partner Daan in Hasselt.
We hebben één zoon, Rob,
We have one son, Rob,
en die is nu elf jaar.
and she is now eleven years old.
Die gaat nu de school in Hasselt.
She is now going to school in Hasselt.
Ik ben zelf ook geboren in Hasselt.
I was also born in Hasselt.
I was also happily born in Hasselt and I have nagelhelmachtin cooperation directorate engineering.
40 years ago, and I repeat that 40 perhaps a lot, and that is because that is an extremely important milestone for me,
that I never thought I would achieve.
I was born with a rare disease, cystic fibrosis.
Some people also know it as cystic fibrosis, which is the Dutch name.
and that speaks a bit more to the imagination.
Others may know it as cystic fibrosis,
people who are more familiar with that medical literature and the English terminology.
And that is a rare disease, a genetic disease, and until a number of years ago also life-threatening.
And that means that at the time of my birth, the diagnosis of that disease was already extremely difficult.
So it took two and a half years before my parents finally received the diagnosis of cystic fibrosis.
and I think that is already one of the first major challenges in a rare disease,
dat is die correcte en tijdige diagnose.
that is the correct and timely diagnosis.
But that also meant, on the one hand relieved, we know it, there is a diagnosis, we can start a treatment,
But forty years ago, there really was no treatment.
And that is very difficult to grasp now, forty years later, where you see that medical innovation, that technological innovation,
heeft gewoon niet stilgestaan.
has simply not stood still.
And that's very difficult to grasp now, forty years later, when you see that medical innovation, that technological innovation, has simply not stood still.
And that means that I am still here now, but I did start with a life expectancy that is lower than ten years.
And yes, it remains very special for me to sit here as a forty-year-old and think back on how my journey in life started.
And cystic fibrosis is indeed the main thread running through my life and has actually influenced every choice made by myself, but also by my family.
And yes, it's very special for me to sit here as a forty-year-old and reflect on how my life began.
Because such a rare disease, you don’t experience it alone. Your whole family stands by you to ensure that you receive the best care, and that in one way or another, you manage to survive that disease.
but that does require a continuous effort from yourself, your family, and your care team around you.
Yes, and that makes it quite intense. But despite that difficult start, I have received many opportunities. I think I'm lucky to have had a good time.
But despite that difficult start, I have been given many opportunities. I think I am lucky to have become a better person.
I am fortunate to have been born in a good time, where a lot has changed, in which quite a bit...
therapieën beschikbaar zijn gekomen.
therapies have become available.
And then the most fantastic thing that has happened to me besides becoming a mother is that I have the chance
have had to step into clinical research.
By chance might not be entirely correct; you are still making a conscious choice there.
But at the moment you choose that, you don't really know what you are choosing for.
Even the doctors were quite unfamiliar in Belgium with that new therapy that was proposed at the time.
was, because there has been a long search for gene therapy.
I think that's something the listeners are probably familiar with as well, rare disease.
genetische mutatie in een bepaald gen.
genetic mutation in a specific gene.
So the first thing we think of is possibly gene therapy.
But that option has had little success so far.
Naar klinische outcomes.
To clinical outcomes.
There have already been quite a few studies, but never a real breakthrough.
And then at a certain point, a switch was actually made to protein therapy.
So therapy at the level of the protein itself.
En ze spreken dan over modulatoren.
And they then talk about modulators.
Those are very small molecules that are actually able to prevent the protein from functioning correctly.
gevormd te worden door die genetische mutatie.
to be shaped by that genetic mutation.
To allow that protein to perform a certain percentage of its function again.
And there you have it, at that moment the protocol of that study is available to you as a patient.
And your doctor thinks, yes, that could possibly be a good option for you.
Because I was just not thirty at that moment.
My situation didn't look so rosy.
De gemiddelde levensverwachting voor patiënten.
The average life expectancy for patients.
Toen was dertig.
Then was thirty.
So I was in a moment of, yes, lung transplantation, yes or no.
Heel veel opnames.
A lot of recordings.
Yes, it was really tough at that moment.
Dus ik had eigenlijk weinig te verliezen.
So I actually had little to lose.
But on the other hand, that study protocol was extremely demanding.
And I had just gotten a job at the university in Hasselt.
Binnen de Mobile Health Unit.
Inside the Mobile Health Unit.
And I was thinking about that, yes, darn it.
Hier ligt iets op tafel.
There is something on the table.
We do not know right away what the impact of that new Medicare will be.
I have an opportunity to get involved here.
Maar verdorie, dat protocol is zwaar.
But damn, that protocol is heavy.
Dat was meerdere dagen per week.
That was several days a week.
Those were visits of more than eight hours.
Net omdat het zo experimenteel was.
Just because it was so experimental.
Just because nobody really knew what the effect could be.
Dus ze moesten echt je volledig onderzoeken.
So they really had to examine you completely.
Uw ECG constant monitoren.
Constantly monitor your ECG.
Blood draws every so often after you took the first pill.
So, yes, and then I just had the honest conversation.
met mijn toenmalige manager.
with my then manager.
Piet Stienissen.
Piet Stienissen.
And she was like, Valérie, you can't doubt that now.
Allee, komaan, dat moet je doen.
Come on, you have to do that.
And there you go, I have decided to do that.
Ik woon dan in Hasselt.
I live in Hasselt then.
Ik word opgevolgd in het UZ Brussel.
I am being followed up at UZ Brussels.
Dus ook, ja, gewoon al die travel.
So yes, just all that travel.
Come on, from Hasselt to Brussels during the morning rush hour.
Als patiënt die zich uiterst vermoeid voelt.
As a patient who feels extremely fatigued.
Die vol met taaie slijmen zit.
That is filled with tough mucus.
Yes, that was quite a challenge alongside that illness,
the work I did at that Hasselt,
then also having to follow that heavy study protocol.
But what I didn't know back then was that now,
ja, hoeveel jaar later, 2013,
yes, how many years later, 2013,
So eleven years later, I am still in that clinical study.
I am just from that first trial that I started in 2013.
gerold in de volgende trial, in de volgende,
rolled in the next trial, in the next,
en ik ben er niet meer uitgestapt.
and I didn't get off anymore.
Because I have also noticed, and I would have never realized this as a patient,
dat is mijn toegangspoort tot nieuwe medicatie.
That is my gateway to new medication.
En andere patiënten hebben dat gewoon niet.
And other patients simply do not have that.
So that new medication, to which I suddenly had access back then,
dankzij die klinische studie,
thanks to that clinical study,
my fellow patients, whom I know from the waiting room,
ik zag die allemaal achteruit gaan.
I saw them all going backward.
And I was, after a certain time, my situation stabilized.
Dus dat was eigenlijk heel, allee, dat was heel raar.
So that was actually very, well, that was very strange.
And then you think, yes, when that medication is tested,
en die heeft een positief effect,
and it has a positive effect,
Yes, then it will likely be available very soon.
voor mijn vrienden met muco.
for my friends with cystic fibrosis.
Maar dat was helemaal niet het geval.
But that was not the case at all.
It took more than six years for those initial molecules,
that I participated in the first tests with in 2013,
voordat die beschikbaar werd voor andere patiënten.
before it became available for other patients.
And that has greatly changed my perspective on healthcare.
I am currently also working in the pharmaceutical industry.
I think that has something to do with it.
Dat heeft heel veel frustratie.
That has a lot of frustration.
Dat heeft heel veel frustratie geleid.
That has led to a lot of frustration.
Heel pijnlijke situaties van patiënten die sterven,
Very painful situations of patients who are dying,
but you know that this medication is available,
maar die kan niet gegeven worden.
but that cannot be given.
That patient is not eligible to participate in that study.
There is no refund, so there is no solution.
Heel schrijnend.
Very poignant.
Maar anderzijds is mijn leven wel gered
But on the other hand, my life has been saved.
door die farmaceutische innovatie.
through that pharmaceutical innovation.
That is the reason why I am sitting here today.
The reason why my health is very stable at the moment.
En een tweede leven gekregen.
And received a second life.
Dus dat is zo'n impactvolle gebeurtenis
So that is such an impactful event.
die niemand ooit kon voorspellen.
that no one could ever predict.
And that has also had an impact on my career.
Ik werk nu in de farma-industrie.
I am currently working in the pharmaceutical industry.
Ik wou dat begrijpen.
I wish to understand that.
Waarom duurt dat zo lang?
Why is it taking so long?
Waarom duurt dat zes jaar?
Why does that take six years?
But how can I maybe have an impact on that as well?
En hoe kan ik ervoor zorgen
And how can I ensure
dat we die toegang tot innovatie,
that we have access to innovation,
toegang tot nieuwe geneesmiddelen binnen België,
access to new medicines within Belgium,
maar ook binnen Europa kunnen versnellen?
but can also accelerate within Europe?
I want to go back a few years to your studies.
Want jij hebt ook heel bewust tijdens jouw studies
Because you have also very consciously during your studies
altijd met gezondheidszorg bezig geweest.
always been involved with healthcare.
Hoe is jouw academisch traject verlopen?
How has your academic journey been?
And there too, Tom, that's again the common thread, patient.
I wanted something for free, of course. What would I want to become?
toen ik een klein meisje was.
when I was a little girl.
Dokter vermoed ik, ja.
Doctor I suspect, yes.
Ja, helemaal correct. Ik wou arts worden.
Yes, that's completely correct. I wanted to become a doctor.
But yes, a consultation with my pulmonologist then.
is gewoon...
is just...
You have said, no, that is not an option, Valérie.
And the reason was that students in medicine
moeten stage lopen in ziekenhuizen.
must do an internship in hospitals.
And if there is one environment that is not opportune
voor een muco-patiënt, is het het ziekenhuis.
For a cystic fibrosis patient, it is the hospital.
Because you have a very high chance of bacterial and viral infections.
En dat was iedere keer met...
And that was every time with...
Je longen zitten vol taaie slijmen.
Your lungs are full of thick mucus.
And every time you come into contact with a bacterium,
Do you have the chance to really colonize in your body?
Heel veel patiënten zijn daardoor
Many patients are therefore
Yes, you have to take a lot of antibiotics.
antibiotica-resistentie.
antibiotic resistance.
Actually, that is the start of the end.
Dus arts worden was gewoon niet mogelijk.
So becoming a doctor was simply not possible.
Even if I would never work as a doctor,
Even the internships were, according to my doctor at the time, not an option.
So I have actually made the choice for bio-engineering,
because that was the option that was closest to me at the time
bij geneeskunde.
in medicine.
And I was also just super good at all of math,
fysica, fysica, fysica, fysica.
physics, physics, physics, physics.
In all those subjects, I really excelled.
Ik ben daar ook heel fier op.
I am very proud of that as well.
I got twenty out of twenty in statistics.
And I got nineteen out of twenty in bioreactor science.
Ik was echt...
I was really...
Ja, dat was mijn ding, mijn verdiepen.
Yes, that was my thing, my deepening.
Er zijn nu veel mensen die waarschijnlijk
There are now many people who probably
shouting a little angrily at the radio.
Ik vond dat fantastisch.
I found that fantastic.
Ik kon me daar ook helemaal in verliezen.
I could completely lose myself in that as well.
But the funny thing was, then I had to write my thesis.
bij bio-ingenieur.
at bioengineer.
And of course I come back to a topic.
gerelateerd aan muco.
related to muco.
Ik wou de bacteriën,
I wanted the bacteria,
Theri, Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
Theri, Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
Dat is de kiem die verantwoordelijk is
That is the seed that is responsible.
voor heel veel leed bij muco-patiënten.
for a lot of suffering among cystic fibrosis patients.
Dat is zo'n typische kiem
That is such a typical sprout.
that can thrive in such oxygen-poor environments.
Dus onze longen van muco-patiënten,
So our lungs of mucoviscidosis patients,
that is the germ that makes us sick,
die ook heel resistent is aan antibiotica.
that is also very resistant to antibiotics.
And I actually wanted to research that.
Maar opnieuw kreeg ik
But again I received
in samenspraak met de prof
in consultation with the professor
nee als antwoord.
no as an answer.
Valérie, ben je gek?
Valérie, are you crazy?
De kiem die jou ziek kan maken,
The germ that can make you sick,
daar wil jij onderzoek op doen?
Is that what you want to research?
Ja, maar ja, ik wil dat begrijpen.
Yes, but yes, I want to understand that.
Ik wil weten hoe dat komt,
I want to know how that comes about,
dat die resistentie zo snel kan ontwikkelen.
that this resistance can develop so quickly.
Maar dan hebben we eigenlijk
But then we actually have
een heel elegante oplossing gevonden.
found a very elegant solution.
Dan heeft mijn prof toen
Then my professor has then
van microbiologie
of microbiology
mij geconnecteerd met
connected with me
professor Kathleen Marshall
Professor Kathleen Marshall
en professor Bart De Moor
and Professor Bart De Moor
van de ingenieurswetenschappen
of engineering sciences
om het, ingenieur en bio-ingenieur,
to it, engineer and bioscientist,
het was een soort van mix,
it was a kind of mix,
voor de nieuwe richting bio-informatica.
for the new direction of bioinformatics.
Die richting werd opgestart
That direction was initiated.
en in ons laatste jaar
and in our last year
bio-ingenieur zouden wij de studenten zijn
we would be the students bio-engineers
die als eerste dat nieuwe vak
who is the first to take that new subject
zouden krijgen.
would get.
And then I would suddenly have my thesis too.
in bio-informatica kunnen doen
can do in bioinformatics
en eigenlijk op het DNA werken
and actually working on the DNA
van pseudomonas arugnosa
of Pseudomonas aeruginosa
instead of a wet lab with the bacteria itself.
Dus voilà.
So there you go.
De digitale oplossing.
The digital solution.
En ook mijn introductie met bio-informatica
And also my introduction to bioinformatics.
wat toen eigenlijk een nieuwe discipline was.
what was actually a new discipline at the time.
And yes, I like everything that is new.
Dus dat paste perfect.
So that fit perfectly.
And I have also had the chance
om daar een doctoraat,
to earn a doctorate there,
to start a doctorate after my thesis.
And then I was able to work for another four years.
op het ontwikkelen van een algoritme
on developing an algorithm
om het DNA,
to the DNA
niet meer van bacteriën,
no longer from bacteria,
ik was toen op muizen-DNA,
I was then on mouse DNA,
om eigenlijk te zoeken
to actually search
binnen dat DNA
within that DNA
naar bepaalde merkers
to certain markers
die een rol speelden in kanker.
who played a role in cancer.
Dus geen mycovisidose,
So no cystic fibrosis,
maar wel een samenwerking met UZ Leuven,
but indeed a collaboration with UZ Leuven,
het ziekenhuis,
the hospital,
al wat dichter
a little closer
bij dat stukje medisch zorg.
about that piece of medical care.
But still from behind my safe computer.
met technologie.
with technology.
Codes schrijven,
Writing codes,
algoritmes runnen,
running algorithms,
datasets creëren,
creating datasets,
waarop ik mijn algoritmes kon laten lopen.
on which I could run my algorithms.
Dus ja, weer opnieuw dat stukje
So yes, again that little part.
ingenieur, technologie, nerd
engineer, technology, nerd
dat daar toch ergens in zit.
that there is something in there somewhere.
Ja, en dan na mijn doctoraat
Yes, and then after my doctorate.
heb ik
I have
een doctoraat in de UZ Leuven.
a doctorate at UZ Leuven.
Ja, hebben wij als familie
Yes, we as a family.
wel een klein drama meegemaakt.
Well, I've experienced a little drama.
Heb ik mijn zus verloren.
I have lost my sister.
Dat was eigenlijk het jaar
That was actually the year.
voor ik mijn doctoraat verdedigde,
before I defended my doctorate,
is mijn zus overleden
Is my sister deceased?
door een gasomploffing in Luik.
due to a gas explosion in Liège.
En ja, dat was opnieuw zo
And yes, that was again the case.
ineens zo, ja,
all of a sudden like this, yes,
a huge, yes, how should I put it,
dat komt zo ineens,
that comes all of a sudden,
dat komt ineens dat nieuws.
That news comes all of a sudden.
And that's something I never...
natuurlijk niemand, kan zich daarop voorbereiden.
Of course, no one can prepare for that.
En dat is ook weer zo
And that is also true again.
The strange story is that I can never prepare myself either.
Het verloop van het leven,
The course of life,
omdat je als patiënt met een
because as a patient with a
zeldzame ziekte, die levensbedreigend
rare disease, which is life-threatening
is, je bent altijd het zorgenkind thuis.
You are always the problem child at home.
Iedereen,
Everyone,
alles wordt georganiseerd om
everything is being organized to
valerie, de beste zorgen,
Valerie, the best care,
het meest aandacht.
the most attention.
En mijn zus was de gezonde zus,
And my sister was the healthy sister,
had geen muco, was een super
had no muco, was a super
toffe zus, twee jaar jonger dan mezelf.
Cool sister, two years younger than me.
Ook altijd mijn grootste
Always my biggest too.
supporter. Elke
supporter. Each

Een vrolijke en een leuke film.
A cheerful and entertaining movie.
En we hebben gesprekken gehad
And we have had discussions.
over, ja, valerie, als jij sterft,
over, yes, valerie, if you die,
hoe wil je dat dan? Hoe zie je dat dan?
How do you want it then? How do you see that then?
Hoe wil je dat we de begrafenis
How do you want us to handle the funeral?
opzetten? Klinkt misschien wat
Setting up? Might sound a bit...
vreemd, maar we hadden dat soort gesprekken.
Strange, but we had those kinds of conversations.
Maar ik vroeg dat nooit aan haar.
But I never asked her that.
Ik heb dat nooit aan haar teruggevraagd.
I never asked her about that again.
En dan opeens,
And then suddenly,
ja, ze was 24,
yes, she was 24,
verloren we haar.
we lost her.
And that was like, that can't be right?
Dat was toch niet het plan?
That wasn't the plan, was it?
Dat was niet het plan.
That was not the plan.
En dat was wel ook weer
And that was it again.
een vrij pittige

verdedigen.

Succeeded, but then after my doctorate I did have...
zoiets van, foeh, ik wil wel eventjes
something like, phew, I do want to for a moment
een pauze. Ik moet even denken van
a break. I need to think for a moment.
wat ga ik doen?
What am I going to do?
And then I have decided to go back,
ja, Leuven is niet ver, maar
yes, Leuven is not far, but
ja, als je met een ziekte zit
Yes, if you're dealing with an illness.
and you are already tired anyway, then it is
gewoon 45 minuten om je ouders
just 45 minutes to your parents
te zien toch wel relatief ver.
to see quite far, after all.
Heb ik besloten, ik ga terug naar

mijn ouders, ik had daar nood aan.
my parents, I needed that.
Ik miste mijn zus, ik miste
I missed my sister, I missed.
family, I wanted to go back to that, that, closer
bij mijn mama en papa. En ik had ook het gevoel
at my mom and dad's. And I also had the feeling
dat zij dat ook wel konden
that they could do that as well
gebruiken. En dan ben ik
using. And then I am
gewoon gaan zoeken in Hasselt van,
just go look in Hasselt for,
ik heb een doctoraat
I have a doctorate.
in de bioinformatica, wat kan
in bioinformatics, what can
ik doen?
What am I doing?
Ja, bioinformatica was relatief nieuw en dan
Yes, bioinformatics was relatively new and then

university, the university
van Hasselt. En ja,
from Hasselt. And yes,
bioinformatica was geen richting daar,
bioinformatics was not a direction there,
dus ik wou dan een postdoc doen.
So I wanted to do a postdoc.
But they were like, yeah, but yeah, a postdoc.
in bioinformatica en een universiteit
in bioinformatics and a university
waar geen bioinformatica wordt gedoseerd,
where bioinformatics is not taught,
is misschien wat moeilijk. Maar dan ben
is maybe a bit difficult. But then I am

unit verhaal,
unit story
omdat dat ook nieuw was.
because that was also new.
Ze gingen met de universiteit
They went with the university.
Hasselt en de twee grote Limburgse
Hasselt and the two major Limburgs
ziekenhuizen, Jessa ziekenhuis en Zool
hospitals, Jessa hospital and Zoo
ziekenhuis, hebben ze een soort van
hospital, do they have a kind of
samenwerkingsverband. En
collaboration. And
binnen dat samenwerkingsverband willen ze
within that partnership, they want to
eigenlijk klinisch
actually clinical
onderzoek doen. En daar was een soort
conduct research. And there was a sort of
poot of een onderdeel dat ging
leg or a part that went
focussen op onderzoek naar nieuwe
focusing on research into new
digitale toepassingen binnen de zorg.
digital applications within healthcare.
En daar zochten ze op dat moment

iemand voor. Maar wie?
someone in mind. But who?
Welk profiel? Dat was een nieuwe
Which profile? That was a new one.
discipline, mobile health.
discipline, mobile health.
And then, I think they thought, yeah,
Valérie, die kent iets van data,
Valérie knows something about data,
die kan programmeren,
who can program,
ja, die is heel geïnteresseerd
Yes, he is very interested.
in gezondheidszorg.
in healthcare.
En ja, dat was een match.
And yes, that was a match.
Dat was met professor Stinesen en
That was with Professor Stinesen and
Poldendaal en Pieter van der Voort. En dat was
Poldendaal and Pieter van der Voort. And that was
such a trio that I thought, wow,
als ik voor die mensen mag werken,
if I may work for those people,
daar ga ik heel veel van leren.
I am going to learn a lot from that.
En daar heb ik acht jaar
And there I have eight years
gespendeerd.
spent.
And then at a certain moment you make
de sprong en dan bewust ga je
the jump and then you go consciously
voor die farmasector. Is het dan
for that pharmaceutical sector. Is it then
because you also want to on the other side
kijken na onderzoek wat er dan
looking after research what then
gebeurt? Of hoe is jouw traject?
what's happening? Or how is your journey?
Hoe ben je eigenlijk een farmaterrector?
How did you actually become a farm director?
Nee, eigenlijk niet zo.
No, not really.
Ik ben niet zo heel bewust.
I am not very aware.
Maar in die periode dat ik
But in that period that I
dan aan de Universiteit van Hasselt
then at the University of Hasselt
started, was also that period when I had that opportunity
had to enter that clinical study.
En waar toen professor Stinesen
And where then Professor Stinesen
zoiets had van, doen Valérie.
Something like that, do Valérie.
Maar dat was eigenlijk als patiënt
But that was actually as a patient.
mijn eerste contact met
my first contact with
de farma-industrie.
the pharma industry.
Dat klinkt misschien zo raar, maar
That might sound so strange, but
You take a lot of pills your whole life long.
Maar eigenlijk vraagt u,
But actually, you are asking,
of ik zelf, vroeg me nauwelijks
or I myself, hardly wondered
af van, wie productieert
off of, who produces
die pillen? Hoe gaat dat in zijn
those pills? How does that work?
werk? Totdat je in zo'n klinische
work? Until you're in such a clinical
studie start. En ik had hier
study starts. And I had here
een informed consent voor u klaargelegd,
an informed consent has been prepared for you,
Tom, because I thought, I don't know if
yourself, have you ever been in a clinical setting yourself?
onderzoek meegedaan? Nee, ik heb nog niet meegedraaid.
Have you participated in the research? No, I have not taken part yet.
Ik heb al veel gehoord van het
I have heard a lot about it.
informed consent, maar ik heb het zelf
informed consent, but I have it myself
nog nooit onder de neus gekregen.
never been put under the nose.
So I thought, you know, now that Tom
visitors are coming here in Hasselt, I am going
een informed consent voor hem
an informed consent for him
klaarleggen. Want dat krijg je dan
Prepare. Because that’s what you’ll get.
als patiënt te zien, en je hebt
as a patient to see, and you have
heel weinig kennis als patiënt.
very little knowledge as a patient.
Ik zei, ik heb me nooit afgevraagd,
I said, I never wondered,
waar komt die medicatie vandaan? Hoe gaat dat in zijn
Where does that medication come from? How does that work?
werk? Ondertussen ken ik
work? Meanwhile, I know
alles van de fase 1, 2, 3,
everything from phase 1, 2, 3
4, studies en dergelijke, maar
4, studies and such, but
At that moment, that was completely unknown to me.
Dus ik denk, die deelname
So I think, that participation
in die studie, en toch wel geïntrigeerd
in that study, and still quite intrigued
worden door dat heel proces
become through that whole process
van een klinische studie en de ontwikkeling
of a clinical study and the development
van medicatie, maar ook
from medication, but also
beter snappen van, goh,
better understand, gosh,
dat duurt hier zes jaar, eer dat we
that takes six years here before we
terugbetaling hebben, en dan beginnen,
have a refund, and then start,
zoeken van, hoe werkt dat eigenlijk, terugbetaling
searching for, how does that actually work, reimbursement
van medicatie? Wie beslist
Of medication? Who decides?
daarover? Waar moet ik als patiënt
About that? Where should I go as a patient?
gaan roepen? Waar moet ik
going to yell? Where should I go?
mijn stem laten horen dat ik
make my voice heard that I
denk dat we die medicatie heel dringend
I think we urgently need that medication.
nodig hebben? Dus dan begin je daar
do you need? So then you start there.
onderzoek naar te doen, je komt in
research to be done, you come in
contact met je patiëntorganisatie,
contact with your patient organization,
je begint te praten daarover,
you start talking about that,
and then I also started in that
Europees Register,
European Register,
waar we eigenlijk data van
where we actually have data from
muco-patiënten verzamelen, en daar waren
mucus patients gathered, and there were
ook samenwerkingen met pharma-industriën,
also collaborations with pharmaceutical industries,
dus het register dat de data
so the register that holds the data
collecteerde, werkt
collected, works
samen met de pharma-industrie die de
together with the pharmaceutical industry that the
data nodig hebben. Dus dat was weer
need data. So that was again
opnieuw, niet alleen door deelname aan de
again, not only by participating in the
studie, maar ook vanuit mijn werk
study, but also from my work
in het Europese data-register kwam
in the European data register came
ik in contact met pharma.
I am in contact with pharma.
En dan is het eigenlijk heel
And then it's actually very
toevallig gebeurd dat ik een
It just so happens that I a
LinkedIn, een headhunter had,
LinkedIn, a headhunter had,
die denk ik opmerkte
that I think pointed out
dat ik wel actief was in dat
that I was indeed active in that
hele verhaaltje van access to innovation,
whole story of access to innovation,
dat ik voor de Europese patiënten
that I represent the European patients
organisatie vrijwilligerswerk deed,
organization did volunteer work,
for the Belgian, that I am in that register
meedraaide, die mijn
participated, which my
berichtje stuurde van, kijk, binnen Roche

zoeken ze een
are they looking for a
patient engagement manager.
patient engagement manager.
En op dat moment,
And at that moment,
na acht jaar in Mobile Health Unit,
after eight years in Mobile Health Unit,
had ik zoiets van, hé,
I had something like, hey,
dat is wel iets heel nieuw,
that is something very new,
I don't really know that much about it, but I'm going.
I will try that, and then I just have that assessment.
meegedaan, en ben ik daar als kandidaat
participated, and I am there as a candidate
uitgekomen. En ja,
it has come out. And yes,
dat was een grote verandering voor mij
that was a big change for me
at that moment, but because I am in that study
zat, en ook beter was,
sat, and also was better,
stabieler was, heb ik die stap wel
more stable was, I did take that step
durven zetten. Omdat, zolang ik
dare to take. Because, as long as I
zo ziek was, ja, ik moet
so sick it was, yes, I have to
saying, I have received a lot of opportunities to
du Hasselt.
you Hasselt.
That's not so obvious when you have multiple...
keren per jaar, twee
twice a year
weken uit bent, op heel onverwachte
you are out for weeks, in very unexpected
momenten, in het ziekenhuis beland,
moments, ended up in the hospital,
of, ja, dat is niet
or, yes, that is not
evident om een werkgever te vinden
evident to find an employer
die dat ziet zitten.
that sees it sitting.
En ik ben er vrij zeker van,
And I am quite sure of it,
dat ik toen ook nooit een job
that I never had a job back then either
zou kunnen uitvoeren in de industrie.
could be carried out in the industry.
Het is maar dankzij die
It's only thanks to that.
studie, verbetering van, stabilisering
study, improvement of, stabilization
van mijn gezondheid,
of my health,
dat ik ook een keer
that I also once
kon wagen om uit die
could dare to get out of that
veilige, tussen haakjes, academische
safe, in brackets, academic
wereld te stappen.
to step into the world.
Ja, en dan
Yes, and then
Roche, Passion Engagement, ja, dat was
Roche, Passion Engagement, yes, that was.
a very nice period during which I learned a lot.
Was ook wel een zware
It was also quite heavy.
periode. Ik heb dan
period. I have then
de kans gehad om ook
the chance to also
op global niveau mee te draaien
to participate on a global level
in Basel, in Zwitserland.
in Basel, in Switzerland.
Maar dat betekende wel dat ik
But that did mean that I
very often went up and down by car,
vijf, zes uur in de wagen,
five, six hours in the car,
bij het kantoor in Basel.
at the office in Basel.
Ik vond dat fantastisch, Tom, echt.
I found that fantastic, Tom, really.
Het was een nieuwe wereld voor mij,
It was a new world for me,
opengegaan, op een global niveau,
opened up, on a global level,
over heel de wereld bezig zijn met
being busy with all over the world
Passion Empowerment, werken met
Passion Empowerment, working with
patiëntorganisaties, zorgen
patient organizations, concerns
dat die stem van de patiënt meegenomen
that the voice of the patient is taken into account
wordt in klinische studies,
is used in clinical studies,
in onderzoek. Ja, dat was een
in research. Yes, that was a
nieuwe wereld die enorm fascinerend
new world that is extremely fascinating
was, but I just couldn't physically keep that up.
Ja, mijn gezondheid is
Yes, my health is
nog altijd een belasting.
still a burden.
En ik ben dan
And then I am
op zoek gegaan naar een
searched for a
farmarol, because I, yes, I think it’s a very
boeiende wereld, maar wel dichter bij huis.
fascinating world, but closer to home.
Iets wat ik vanuit Brussel

kan doen, maar wel
can do, but indeed
liefst regionaal, internationaal.
preferably regional, international.
En dan heb ik opnieuw geluk gehad

om een manager
to be a manager
binnen de firma Daichi Sankyo
within the company Daichi Sankyo
tegen te komen.
to meet.
En waar ik nu
And where I am now
een kans heb gekregen om een
I have been given a chance to a
internationale, regionale rol te doen.
to play an international, regional role.
Het topic is eerder
The topic is rather
terug digital.
back digital.
Digital health innovation binnen pharma.
Digital health innovation within pharma.
But for me, that is very closely linked.
Passion Empowerment, digital
Passion Empowerment, digital
technologies, yes, for me that is almost one
term.
term.
Is dat één en hetzelfde voor jou?
Is that one and the same for you?
Voor mij wel. Voor pharma iets minder.
For me yes. For pharma a bit less.
Daarom denk ik dat ik bij Rojo
That's why I think I belong at Rojo.
ook dat stukje technologie
also that piece of technology
heel erg miste.
missed it very much.
Omdat bij pharma is patient engagement
Because in pharma, patient engagement is important.
eigenlijk vooral de samenwerking met
actually especially the collaboration with
patiënten, patiënt-experten,
patients, patient experts,
patiënt-organisaties, om
patient organizations, to
bijvoorbeeld inderdaad die klinische
for example indeed that clinical
protocollen, inform consens,
protocols, informed consent
meer patient-centric te maken.
to make it more patient-centric.
Om te zorgen dat patiënten beter
To ensure that patients are better
geïnformeerd worden over medicatie.
be informed about medication.
Dat we, ja, dat is echt
That we, yes, that is really true.
gebaseerd op de samenwerking.
based on the collaboration.
Voor mij is patient engagement,
For me, patient engagement is...
patient empowerment,
patient empowerment
for me that also means how can we help that patient
gaan ondersteunen,
to go support,
gaan empoweren in de management
going to empower in management
van zijn ziekte en in die dagelijkse
of his illness and in that daily
strijd van die patiënt.
struggle of that patient.
En daar staat voor mij technologie,
And there stands technology for me,
is voor mij daarin heel belangrijk.
is very important to me in that.
Dus ja,
So yes,
iedereen heeft zijn verschillende definities,
everyone has their different definitions,
maar voor mij is patient empowerment echt
but for me, patient empowerment is real
van hoe kunnen we die patiënt uitrusten
How can we equip that patient?
met technologie
with technology
om die patiënt echt te ondersteunen.
to really support that patient.
En dat kan breder gaan als technologie
And that can go broader as technology.
en patient empowerment. Maar ja, met mijn
and patient empowerment. But yes, with my
ingenieursachtergrond is dat technologisch
engineering background is that technological
stukje voor mij wel het meest boeiende.
Piece for me the most fascinating.
MUZIEK
MUSIC
Kun je ons even meenemen in de dag
Can you take us through the day?
van een patiënt met
of a patient with
muco en misschien dan voordat
muco and maybe then before
je in de klinische studie geraakt
you got involved in the clinical study
bent en hoe jouw leven er
are and what your life looks like
nu uitziet als
now looks like
waar moet je allemaal mee rekening houden?
What do you need to take into account?
Ja,
Yes,
I hadn't thought about that in advance.
maar ik
but I
ja, muco is
yes, muco is
een multisystemische aandoening
a multisystemic condition
en dat betekent dat dat wel
and that means that it does
een heel aantal organen impacteert.
a whole number of organs are impacted.
Dus mijn dag
So my day
s'morgens start met
in the morning start with
like iedereen denk ik,
like everyone I think,
een ontbijt. Maar omdat je
a breakfast. But because you
ook diabetes, 30%
also diabetes, 30%
van de mucopatiënten heeft ook een soort
Of the mucopathy patients, there is also a kind.
diabetes, dat is het meest vergelijkbaar
diabetes, that is the most comparable
met diabetes type 1.
with type 1 diabetes.
That is because the pancreas, just like
alle andere organen
all other organs
een soort fibroze op
a type of fibrosis on
ontstaat, een soort vertaaiing
arises, a kind of translation
en dat die dus geen
and that they therefore do not have
verteringsenzyme meer kan produceren,
digestive enzyme can produce more,
maar ook geen insuline kan aanmaken.
but also cannot produce insulin.
Dus net als een diabetes patiënt
So just like a diabetes patient
start die dag met het checken van
start that day by checking
What is my blood sugar like in the morning?
wakker word, al nadenken
waking up, already thinking
wat ga ik eten en dan al een
What am I going to eat and then already a
doos spuiten, want idealitaar doe je dat
box spraying, because ideally you do it that way
toch zo'n 10, 15 minuutjes voor de maaltijd.
still about 10, 15 minutes before the meal.
But then you also have to see that afterwards you...
eet. En dan tijdens het eten
eat. And then during the meal
neemt je je verteringsenzyme
do you take your digestive enzyme
neemt je je vitamine
Are you taking your vitamins?
neemt je antibiotica
takes your antibiotics
veel patiënten nemen gewoon
many patients just take
chronisch antibiotica
chronic antibiotics
als een soort van veilige
as a kind of safe
buffer. Dus neemt je je
buffer. So you take your
medicatie en dan typisch
medication and then typically
begin ik met ergozolle.
I start with ergosole.
Dus mijn kinesist
So my physiotherapist
komt zes keer per week
comes six times a week
maar eigenlijk als patiënt doe je
but actually as a patient you do
je kine elke dag.
You go to physiotherapy every day.
Vroeger was dat s'morgens en
In the past, that was in the morning and
s'avonds en nam dat ongeveer
in the evening and took about
vier uur per dag in beslag.
four hours a day.
So I start with the ergosole or inhaling.
van slijmverdunners.
of mucus thinners.
Daar is heel veel in veranderd
A lot has changed in that.
over de jaren.
over the years.
And now there is even just a very natural
product, dat is hypertoons
product, that is hypertoons
zoutwater. Dat is eigenlijk gewoon een heel sterke
saltwater. That is actually just a very strong
zoutoplossing. En dat is gebaseerd
salt solution. And that is based
op een soort osmose effect.
on a kind of osmosis effect.
Dat je dat zout inademt,
That you inhale that salt,
geven die cellen vocht af
do those cells release moisture
en helpt dat die slijmen te verdunnen.
and helps to thin those mucus.
And the idea is that you can easily handle those slimes then.
kan ophoesten. Dus je inhaleert
can cough up. So you inhale.
ongeveer een half uurtje.
about half an hour.
Het kan ook antibiotica zijn,
It could also be antibiotics,
slijmverdunnende medicatie.
mucolytic medication.
En dan begin je aan autogene
And then you start with autogenic.
drainage. En dat is een vrij
drainage. And that is quite a
innovatieve technologie
innovative technology
waarbij de patiënt zelf
where the patient themselves
leert hoe die door middel van
learns how to do this by means of
verschillende soorten ademhaling
different types of breathing
tegen een weerstand, dat is een soort
against a resistance, that is a kind
pepsysteem, moet je zo blazen tegen een
pep system, you have to blow like this against a
resistance, like when you blow through a straw.
We hebben ook zo van die
We also have those kinds of
toestelletjes met zo van die balletjes. Als je dan
devices with little balls. If you then
daar uitademt, dan trillen
breathes out, then trembles
je longen. Dus je krijgt heel veel
your lungs. So you get a lot
technieken aangeleerd, ademhalingstechnieken,
techniques learned, breathing techniques,
om één voor één elke slijm
to each slime one by one
in je longen te kunnen ophoesten
to be able to cough it up from your lungs
en uitspuwen.
and spit.
And that is something that just takes a lot of time.
neemt, want je moet dat
takes, because you have to do that
vergelijken met een soort kougom,
comparing it to a kind of chewing gum,
die tegen de wand van je luchtwegen
that against the wall of your airways
plakt. En je moet blijven
sticks. And you have to stay
ademen en ook
breathe and also
met kracht uitademen, om
exhale forcefully, to
stukje voor stukje die slijm te doen
piece by piece to do that slime
bewegen en dan uiteindelijk te kunnen
to move and then ultimately to be able to
ophoesten. En vroeger
coughing. And before
deed ik dat twee uur s'morgens.
I did that at two o'clock in the morning.
Maar ik moest
But I had to
gewoon stoppen, omdat ik uitgeput was.
just stop, because I was exhausted.
Maar ik voelde nog langs alle kanten
But I still felt from all sides.
heutels. Dus als je inademde, dat je
heutels. So when you breathed in, that you
gewoon in je long overal
just in your lung everywhere
al die slijm voelde bewegen.
all that slime felt moving.
En ik herinner me nog heel... Dat is
And I still remember very... That is
gewoon enorm zwaar. Je wordt daar ook heel moe van.
just extremely heavy. You get very tired from that as well.
And I still remember my hardest moments.
periode tijdens mijn doctoraat, voordat
period during my doctorate, before
ik in die studie stapte.
I stepped into that study.
Mijn partner werkte toen
My partner was working then.
bij AB InBev in Leuven.
at AB InBev in Leuven.
She then rode her bike to work.
We woonden toen in Leuven. Ik deed mijn
We lived in Leuven at that time. I was doing my
doctoraat aan de KU Leuven. En hij
PhD at KU Leuven. And he
kwam s'middags thuis om te lunchen.
came home in the afternoon to have lunch.
And that was usually just the time that I
gedaan had met het ophoesten van die
had done with coughing that
slijmen. En dan...
sucking up. And then...
Ik denk dat ik 80% van de keren
I think that 80% of the time
wenend vertrok. Omdat ik
weeping left. Because I
altijd zo moe en uitgeput was.
always so tired and exhausted.
En dan moest ik de energie vinden
And then I had to find the energy.
om toch nog naar
to still go to
to go to the university to work on my doctorate
te beginnen. En ik had dan altijd
to begin. And I always had
zoiets van, al die andere studenten
something like that, all those other students
They have been working all morning.
En ik kom daaraan om half één. Ik ben eigenlijk
And I'll be there at half past twelve. I'm actually
al supermoe. En de dag moet
already super tired. And the day has to
nog beginnen. Dus ja, dat was
still to begin. So yes, that was
wel heel pittig. En s'avonds
well quite spicy. And in the evening
was dat opnieuw. Dus doorheen de dag
was that again. So throughout the day
produceren je longen weer slijmen, slijmen, slijmen.
your lungs are producing mucus again, mucus, mucus.
En je kan niet gaan slapen.
And you can't go to sleep.
Dat zit zo in de weg. Je bent
That gets in the way. You are
constant aan het hoesten. Dus je bent
constantly coughing. So you are
eigenlijk verplicht om s'avonds je routine
actually mandatory to do your routine in the evening
van slijmverdunnen
of mucus thinning
en medicatie inademen en slijmen ophoesten
and inhaling medication and coughing up mucus
te herhalen. En daarvoor dat er

Je hebt gewoon iemand nodig die

meeluistert, die meehelpt, die

meedruk uitoefent om die

efficiëntie van dat proces te verhogen.
to increase the efficiency of that process.
Maar dat is eigenlijk vooral een soort
But that's actually mainly a kind of
bijna psycholoog,
almost psychologist,
mental support. Iemand die zegt van
mental support. Someone who says of
kom aan, elke dag opnieuw volhouden.
Come on, keep going every day.
En ik was
And I was
there is also very perfectionistic about it, because I
also known as had, if I those slimes
don't get rid of it, then I have a better chance
dat die bacteriën
that those bacteria
een voedingsbodem hebben.
to have a breeding ground.
En ja, je
And yes, you
die bacteriën, als die infecties
those bacteria, like those infections
to grow too large, that is in healthy people,
krijg je een antibiotica-kuur.
you will receive a course of antibiotics.
In het begin zijn dat pilletjes,
In the beginning, those are pills,
maar ja, resistentie treedt op,
but yes, resistance occurs,
die bacterie reageert daar niet meer op.
that bacteria no longer responds to it.
En dan worden dat hospitalisaties.
And then that turns into hospitalizations.
Eerst met één of twee antibiotica,
First with one or two antibiotics,
soms een cocktail van
sometimes a cocktail of
drie antibiotica. Maar op een bepaald
three antibiotics. But at a certain
moment, yes, then you get something like that
resistentieprofiel. Dus je dient
resistance profile. So you need
een spute met bacteriën in, in het
a spit with bacteria in it, in the
labo. Ze onderzoeken die bacteriën,
lab. They are researching those bacteria,
ze laten daar allemaal verschillende
they all let different things there
antibiotica op los. En ze kijken
antibiotics at large. And they are watching.
van oké, welke antibiotica slaagt er in
Okay, which antibiotics are effective?
om die kiem

terug te dringen of te doden.
to push back or to kill.
Ja, en die uitslag
Yes, and that result.
was altijd superspannend.
was always super exciting.
Dat was superstressvol, want je had dan
That was super stressful, because you then had
zo'n vakje gevoelig
such a sensitive box
en ongevoelig en zoiets
and insensitive and something like that
intermediair. En dan zie je, gewoon
intermediary. And then you see, just
met de tijd, met de jaren, dat
with time, with the years, that
dat vakje van de antibiotica, waar
that box of antibiotics, where
the seed is sensitive, at the beginning
staan daar vijftien namen.
There are fifteen names listed there.
Acht, zeven,
Eight, seven,
zes. Ja, een bepaald
six. Yes, a certain
moment, tegen mijn dertigste, stond daar nog
moment, by the time I turned thirty, was still there
één naam, twee namen.
one name, two names.
Maar aan één antibiotica had ik een

om dat opnieuw te geven. Dus ja,
to give that again. So yes,
er stond nog één vakje bij.
There was one more box added.
Eén naam in het vakje gevoelig.
One name in the sensitive box.
Yes, then you start those conversations.
to have, yes, what does that mean then?
En ja, ik merk dat het ook,
And yes, I notice that too,
een hospitalisatie van twee weken,
a hospitalization of two weeks,
wauw, twee weken

antibiotica, maar gevoelde eigenlijk nog maar
antibiotics, but actually still felt
little difference, while when I was young, I went
twee weken naar het ziekenhuis en kwam
two weeks to the hospital and came
eigenlijk herboren daarbuiten, vol energie,
actually reborn out there, full of energy,
want de bacterie was weer teruggedrongen,
because the bacteria had been pushed back again,
en ik kon weer verder.
and I could continue again.
Dus ja,
So yes,
ik denk die kineef, dat ik die

maybe from the world. But yes,
uiteindelijk, wat heb je daaraan, hè?
Ultimately, what do you gain from that, right?

and to butter up.
En dan, ja,
And then, yes,
je hospitalisaties is een groot
your hospitalization is a big
onderdeel. Maar wat
part. But what
what people often don't know is, you have to
dat ook allemaal regelen, hè. Je wordt
that's all being arranged too, huh. You become
opgevolgd door een diëtiste,
followed by a dietitian,

meetings, I mean.
Consultaties.
Consultations.
Such a business context that comes up, yes.
Maar ook alles voor die verzekering,
But also everything for that insurance,
hè, want die kost is
hey, because that cost is
enorm, hè. Ik val altijd achterover
enormous, isn't it? I always fall backward.
when I receive the invoices from the hospital.
Die kost is gewoon enorm.
The cost is just enormous.
So you also need to make sure that you submit that.
Bij de privéverzekeraar, bij de CM.
At the private insurer, with the CM.
En dat stukje, die hele
And that piece, that whole
logistiek, hè. Uw medicijnenkasten
Logistics, right. Your medicine cabinets.
I can even show my medicine cabinets.
Ja, dat zijn twee kasten.
Yes, those are two cabinets.
Ja, dat moet ook allemaal bijgevuld worden,

bijgehaald worden. Dus als die

logistics, that is still a whole
groot deel, die administratie.
large part, that administration.
En dan het stukje mental health,
And then the piece about mental health,
hè. Dus dat allemaal gewoon volhouden,
Hey. So just keep that up.
dag in, dag uit.
Day in, day out.

always is to support.
Ja, ga je dat wel alleen door.
Yes, are you going to do that alone?
En niemand voelt die slijmen, niemand weet

hoe dat is. Dus die frustratie
how that is. So that frustration
van niet kunnen slapen, die slijmen,
from not being able to sleep, those slimes,
die pijn. Ja, dat, ik kan
that pain. Yes, that, I can
that may be so, you can say that, but
je wilt ook niet constant mensen lastig
you also don't want to constantly bother people

falling. So that's also something where you partly
ja, zelf mee moet leren omgaan.
Yes, you have to learn to deal with it yourself.
En ja,
And yes,
het goede is na de studie.
The good thing is after the study.
Het heeft wel even geduurd, hè, want
It took a while, didn't it, because
ik zit er nu elf jaar in en de eerste
I have been in it for eleven years now and the first
molecules waren niet zo supersuccesvol.
molecules were not so super successful.
Dat zijn verschillende versies.
Those are different versions.
En verbeteringen van

die moleculen
those molecules

up and for the rest of the day
kan ik perfect functioneren.
I can function perfectly.
So that I won’t be coughing so much anymore.
Dus dat
So that
is een enorme verandering, hè.
It's a huge change, isn't it?
And that is not always taken into account yet.
in klinische studies, hè. Dus heel vaak wordt er
in clinical studies, you know. So very often there is
gekeken naar outcomes, zoals
looked at outcomes, such as
wat is je longfunctie?
What is your lung function?
Maar bijvoorbeeld de tijdswinst
But for example the time savings
als patiënt, dat stukje
as a patient, that piece
mental health wat lichter wordt, omdat
mental health becomes a bit lighter, because
you are less constantly afraid of getting sick.
Ja, dat wordt eigenlijk
Yes, that actually becomes
niet gemeten. En misschien
not measured. And maybe
something else I can share with the
luisteraars is
listeners is
die angst voor infectie, dat zat
that fear of infection, it was there
er bij mij altijd in. En
always included with me. And
de COVID was een heel interessante
the COVID was very interesting
periode voor mij, omdat
period for me, because
dat stukje onbegrip of dat stukje
that little piece of misunderstanding or that little piece
eenzaamheid,
loneliness,
wel onverwacht, werden heel veel mensen
well unexpectedly, many people were
geconfronteerd met angst voor
confronted with fear of
infectie, hè. Iets wat onzichtbaar is
infection, right. Something that is invisible
kan enorm veel angst genereren.
can generate a lot of fear.
En ineens is dat COVID-virus daar
And suddenly that COVID virus is there.
en kampen heel veel
and struggle a lot
mensen met die angst voor dat onzichtbare
people with that fear of the invisible
virus. En dat is iets waar wij
virus. And that is something we
als muco-patiënten, ja, dag in dag uit
as mucoviscidosis patients, yes, day in day out
mee leefden, hè. Op de trein, op het
They empathized, right? On the train, on the
werk, op school, mensen nabij u
work, at school, people near you
die hoesten, dat was altijd een
those coughs, that was always a
angst. En tijdens COVID was
fear. And during COVID was
wel best aangenaam.
Well, quite pleasant.
Iedereen ons met zijn handen,
Everyone with their hands on us,
iedereen draagt een mondmasker,
everyone is wearing a face mask,
was geweldig voor de muco-patiënt.
was great for the muco patient.
Ik kan me voorstellen, mensen met
I can imagine, people with
een verlaagde immuniteit,
a lowered immunity,
dat die dat ook best wel oké
that that's also quite okay
vonden.
found.
So yes, I don't know if that is a little bit
zicht geeft op wat erbij
view gives on what is included
komt kijken, maar
comes to look, but
er komt veel bij kijken.
A lot is involved.
De diabetes, ja, dat nog niet zo
The diabetes, yes, not that yet.
heel veel over vertelt. Ik denk dat dat misschien ook iets
tells a lot about it. I think that might also be something
is waar luisteraars al iets
is true listeners already something
beter beeld bij kunnen vormen.
be able to form a better picture.
Maar ja, dat neemt natuurlijk ook wel
But yes, that does take some time as well.
what time it takes to do all of that
managen en op te volgen
to manage and to follow up
op een goede manier. En alles
in a good way. And everything
is gelinkt, hè. Mental health
is linked, right? Mental health
niet oké, impacteert uw
not okay, impacts your
fysieke health. Uw fysieke health
physical health. Your physical health
niet oké. Als je je diabetes niet controleert
not okay. If you don't monitor your diabetes
en je zit constant van hoge
and you are constantly from high
suiker naar lage suiker, ja,
sugar to low sugar, yes,
you are sure that you are not mentally either
gelukkig van wordt.
makes you happy.
Dus dat is dat stukje
So that's that piece.
holistisch, wat ik heel vaak
holistic, which I very often
mis in de zorg. Dus je gaat als
miss in care. So you go as
patiënt elke specialist af,
patient every specialist off,
je gaat naar de endocrinoloog,
you are going to the endocrinologist,
je gaat naar de pneumoloog,
you are going to the pulmonologist,
but there is actually no one who helps you with
het totaalplaatje. Dan moet je
the big picture. Then you need to
dan maar als patiënt gewoon alleen
then just as a patient alone
die linken zien te maken en
those leftists seem to make and
ja, dat is er
Yes, it is there.
nog niet. Ik denk dat dat ook iets is
not yet. I think that is something too
where, as I look to the future of the
zorg en data en technologie,
care, data, and technology,
dat is misschien een beetje
that is maybe a little bit
onrealistisch om te verwachten
unrealistic to expect
dat data en technologie
that data and technology
direct die holistische benadering kan
direct that holistic approach can
realiseren, maar dat hoop ik wel.
to realize, but I do hope so.
Ja, omdat we nu
Yes, because we now
still a lot is siloed, not just at the level
of data, but also just how we provide our care
organiseren. Dat zijn fysiek aparte
organize. Those are physically separate
afdelingen in ziekenhuizen,
departments in hospitals,
dat zijn andere experten.
those are other experts.
Er bestaat niet zoiets als de
There is no such thing as the
muco-experten. Er bestaat de long
muco-experts. The lung exists
of de pneumoloog, er bestaat de endocrinoloog,
or the pulmonologist, there exists the endocrinologist,
er bestaat de arts die
there exists the doctor who
zich bezighoudt met uw botten en
is engaged with your bones and
dus je moet het als patiënt
so you have to as a patient
wel allemaal in elkaar plakken.
well, all stick together.
Hoe zou je dat aanpakken
How would you approach that?
if you say we are going for that holistic
benadering?
approach?
Ik zie al een aantal mooie
I already see a number of beautiful ones.
initiatieven binnen diabetes
initiatives within diabetes
omdat diabetes op zich dan ook
because diabetes itself then also
alweer verschillende zaken
again several matters
beïnvloedt en dan merk je
affects and then you notice
dan wordt er in een ziekenhuis
then there will be in a hospital
iets opgericht als een diabeteskliniek
something established as a diabetes clinic
dus dat is een ziekenhuis binnen
so that is a hospital inside
een ziekenhuis. En in die diabeteskliniek
a hospital. And in that diabetes clinic
worden wel de verschillende experten
the various experts are indeed becoming
al samengebracht, waardoor
already brought together, which
je tenminste al overleg
you at least have coordination
krijgt tussen experten.
gets among experts.
So I think that's already a very good start.
is. Maar ik denk dat er nog
is. But I think there is still
there is a lot of potential, also in that piece
van health data.
of health data.
Omdat je natuurlijk
Because you naturally
van al die verschillende disciplines en
from all those different disciplines and
al die verschillende organen en ziektes
all those different organs and diseases
heb je wel data.
Do you have data?
En op een bepaald moment, die data
And at a certain moment, that data.
kan je misschien zelfs nog makkelijker
can you maybe do it even easier
ik weet dat er heel veel
I know that there are a lot of
interoperabiliteitsissues zijn
interoperability issues are
maar technisch gezien
but technically speaking
kan je data op zich
can you data itself
denk ik wel makkelijker samenbrengen
I think it’s definitely easier to bring together.
en dan met die hele AI
and then with that whole AI
revolutie die we ook zien
revolution that we also see
and the speed that is now coming in there
kan je misschien ook wel makkelijker
You might be able to do it easier as well.
op basis van die data, dat holistische
based on that data, that holistic
beeld creëren. En op basis
create image. And based on
van dat meer holistische beeld
of that more holistic picture
kan je dan ook meer
can you do more then too
holistisch ondersteunende
holistic supportive
suggesties geven aan een patiënt.
giving suggestions to a patient.
Omdat het ene beïnvloedt
Because one influences the other.
het andere. Het staat gewoon niet los van elkaar.
the other. It simply does not stand apart from each other.
Dus daar denk ik dat in de
So there I think that in the
toekomst wel, dat is misschien
future yes, that is maybe
ook een beetje die digital twin
also a bit of that digital twin
waarover vaak gesproken wordt.
often talked about.
Een soort virtuele
A kind of virtual
datagebaseerde valerie
data-based valerie
kan creëren. En dat je zo
can create. And that you so
can do a number of simulations or a number of things
kan voorspellen. En dat je daar
can predict. And that you there
wel meer die holistische aanpak kan
well more that holistic approach can
creëren.
to create.
And the mental aspect, you say I do have a
psycholoog als een van de
psychologist as one of the
maar heel veel artsen
but many doctors
I think you put it on Nivent at some point.
mijn artsen behandelende ziekte
my doctor's treating illness
er is niemand die de patiënt behandelt.
There is no one treating the patient.
Is daar voldoende
Is there enough?
aandacht voor dat mentale?
attention to that mental?
Ja, in een silo
Yes, in a silo.
opnieuw. Dus
again. So
daar zal niet veel aandacht zijn
there will not be much attention there
als je met een
if you are with a
andere arts daarover praat, dan zal daar
if you talk to another doctor about it, then there will be
weinig aandacht voor zijn.
little attention for his.
There will be something written for it, there will be a
therapiesuggestie zijn, maar dat
there may be therapy suggestions, but that
zal nooit afgestemd worden op
will never be tuned to
hoe zie jij dat dan?
How do you see that?
Zit je die therapie zitten?
Are you sticking with that therapy?
Ik weet bijvoorbeeld bij de
For example, I know at the
studie waar ik in zat, dat die
study I was in, that it
medicatie heeft een enorm
medication has an enormous
effect op gewichtstoename.
effect on weight gain.
Dus een
So a
gemiddelde toename in gewicht
average weight increase
is ongeveer 10 kilo. Dus dat betekent
is about 10 kilos. So that means
sommige patiënten meer, sommigen minder, maar
some patients more, some less, but
10 kilo is veel.
10 kilos is a lot.
Patiënten vinden dat soms moeilijk.
Patients sometimes find that difficult.
Zeker jonge mensen.
Certainly young people.
Je hebt een beeld van je lichaam
You have an image of your body.
en types bij muco zijn heel
and types in muco are very
mager, omdat we niet kunnen verteren.
thin, because we cannot digest.
We nemen onze voeding niet goed op.
We do not absorb our nutrition well.
En ineens komt daar een product op
And suddenly a product appears.
de markt dat je longen stabiliseert,
the market that stabilizes your lungs,
maar ook je spijsvertering
but also your digestion
veel efficiënter maakt dan dat
makes it much more efficient than that
die was. En ineens, met je huidige
that was. And suddenly, with your current
manier van voedingsgewoonte
way of eating habits
word je 10 kilo dikker.
you gain 10 kilos.
Dat zijn dingen waar een longarts
Those are things that a pulmonologist
niet bij stelt.
not applicable.
I might adjust that when I stop, but
for a lung doctor, it is very evident that you need that medication.
neemt, want je longfunctie wordt
takes, because your lung function is
gestabiliseerd. Waarom zou je daaraan twijfelen?
stabilized. Why would you doubt that?
Maar als patiënt, als mens,
But as a patient, as a person,
ik volg ook veel van die
I also follow a lot of those.
sociale platforms
social platforms
waar muco-patiënten opzitten,
where muco patients are sitting,
zoals Facebookgroepen,
such as Facebook groups,
Then you notice that it is not that obvious.
Many patients say they do not want to take that,
want ik wil geen 10 kilo
because I don't want 10 kilos
bijkomen.
to recover.
Dat is misschien nog niet helemaal
That might not be quite it yet.
mental health, maar dat is weer opnieuw
mental health, but that is again new.
dat meer holistische benadering.
that more holistic approach.
En voor dat mental health
And for that mental health
I think we have a lot of luck in Belgium.
dat we voor mucovisidozen
that we for cystic fibrosis
in een soort van zorgpad
in a kind of care pathway
zitten, waar
sitting, where
ook mental health
also mental health
support wordt voorzien door een psycholoog.
Support is provided by a psychologist.
So you can always go there for that.
En daar denk ik dat we
And there I think we
well, it is somewhat of a luxury disease that we
tenminste een zorgpad hebben,
have at least one care pathway,
dat dat multidisciplinair is,
that it is multidisciplinary,
dat je daar toegang hebt tot
that you have access to there
kine, tot
physio, until
psycholoog. Maar ik ben
psychologist. But I am
"are also certainly that this applies to a lot of patients."
niet zo is. En dat je daar toch
is not so. And that you still there
nog heel veel op jezelf bent aangewezen.
still very much dependent on yourself.
En dan opnieuw, denk ik,
And then again, I think,
dat technologie daar ook wel een
that technology does play a role there as well
soort, ja, die toegang
type, yes, that access
tot zorg kan verbeteren.
to improve care.
Ik heb zelf
I have myself
ook het SPICE gebruikt.
also used the SPICE.
Het is niet specifiek voor muco,
It is not specific to muco.
maar dat is een soort app die
but that is a kind of app that
helpt om in slaap te vallen
helps to fall asleep
s'avonds, waar je kan
in the evenings, where you can
mediteren, kan luisteren naar
meditating, can listen to
verschievende geluiden en verhalen.
various sounds and stories.
En dat heeft me wel enorm geholpen.
And that has really helped me a lot.
Je moet je wegvinden naar die technologie,
You have to find your way to that technology,
but I do think that technology can play a role
spelen om
play for
support voor patiënten
support for patients
te vergroten.
to enlarge.
One of the things that you have already done a few times
aangehaald hebt, is
you have quoted, is
dat de behandeling
that the treatment
die jij gekregen hebt, niet iedereen kreeg
that you received, not everyone received
op dat moment. Maar dat is ook zo met
at that moment. But that is also true with
digitale technologie. Er zijn
digital technology. There are
mensen die er makkelijker
people who find it easier
their way in finding and people who it
niet vinden. Jij bent
not finding. You are
waarschijnlijk een van de meest onderlegde
probably one of the most knowledgeable
patiënten als het op digitalisering
patients when it comes to digitization
aankomt. Vind jij dan ook
arrives. Do you think so too?
jouw rol omdat
your role because
te helpen verspreiden
to help spread
wat er allemaal is
what there is
via patiëntenverenigingen, via
via patient associations, via
platformen? Natuurlijk.
Platforms? Of course.
Voor mij heeft dat stukje
For me, that piece
farmaceutische
pharmaceutical
therapie, medicatie, dat was
therapy, medication, that was
heel sterk
very strong
aanwezig dat ik daar als patiënt
present that I am there as a patient
ook echt een patient advocate ben geworden.
I have also truly become a patient advocate.
Je kunt me terugvinden
You can find me again.
in de krant, op
in the newspaper, on
terzaken, op tv,
affairs, on TV,
zelfs inderdaad een radioshow,
indeed even a radio show,
want je vroeg mij daar straks
because you asked me earlier
if I had any experience and I said no,
but I suddenly remember that I also
ooit op Radio 2 ben geweest
ever been on Radio 2
rond het luikje van
around the hatch of
toegang tot
access to
die innovatieve medicatie.
that innovative medication.
En zoals je zegt, inderdaad,
And as you say, indeed,
hetzelfde voor digitale technologie.
the same for digital technology.
Ieder interview, ieder
Every interview, every
uitnodiging die je krijgt,
invitation that you receive,
die we als patiëntorganisatie krijgen,
that we receive as a patient organization,
nemen we echt aan
are we really taking it
om inderdaad
to indeed
aan te tonen wat de impact
to demonstrate what the impact is
kan zijn van digitale technologie.
can be of digital technology.
Ik denk dat dat soms onderschat wordt.
I think that is sometimes underestimated.
Wat digitale technologie kan brengen,
What digital technology can bring,
dat is heel anders dan een medicijn.
that is very different from a medicine.
Maar in een ziektedomein
But in a disease domain
where perhaps medicine cannot solve everything either
en opnieuw dat holistische stuk,
and again that holistic part,
is digitale technologie
is digital technology
heel erg belangrijk. Dus ik ben
very important. So I am
daar een enorme voorstander van.
I'm a huge proponent of that.
Ik denk wel het voordeel,
I think the advantage is well,
die therapie van
that therapy of
that medication, then we're talking about more than
100.000 euro per jaar
100,000 euros per year
per patiënt. Ik ken
per patient. I know
gelukkig nog geen
fortunately not yet
app of oplossing
app or solution
van dat budget.
from that budget.
Ik denk dat daar de
I think that there the
betaalbaarheid een voordeel is.
affordability is an advantage.
De schaalbaarheid ook
The scalability too.
There is indeed a lot of that technology.
voordeel. Maar ja, natuurlijk
advantage. But yes, of course
voor sommige mensen kan
for some people it can
20 euro of 10 euro per maand
20 euros or 10 euros per month
misschien wel net te veel zijn.
maybe just a little too much.
En ook
And also
er is zo'n groot aanbod
there is such a large supply
waar begin je als patiënt
Where do you start as a patient?
je opent de appstore
you open the app store
als je niet doorverwezen bent,
if you haven't been referred,
ze wordt via een bevriende patiënt,
she is referred by a friend patient,
via patiëntorganisatie of via
via patient organization or via
een arts, is het ook niet misschien
a doctor, is it not perhaps
zo makkelijk om je weg te vinden
so easy to find your way
in de hoeveelheid aan apps
in the number of apps
en welke app je dan ook effectief
and which app you actually use
kan helpen. Dus daar
can help. So there
denk ik dat we wel nog kunnen
I think we can still do it.
mogelijk ook, ja, op die awareness
possibly yes, on that awareness
moet er gewoon meer nog gewerkt worden.
There just needs to be more work done.
And there I also see a role for patients.
en patiëntorganisaties, omdat zij
and patient organizations, because they
ook heel neutraal zijn. Zij kunnen echt op een
also be very neutral. They can really be on a
neutrale manier eigenlijk
actually in a neutral way
de verschillende solutions,
the different solutions,
gaan met elkaar vergelijken
to compare with each other
en misschien ook bepaalde
and maybe also certain
awareness en aanbevelingen doen
awareness and making recommendations
richting de groep van patiënten.
towards the group of patients.
Welke soort
Which kind
applicaties heb jij op jouw telefoon
What applications do you have on your phone?
staan die je heel
are you very
regelmatig gebruikt om
regularly used to
alles wat dat met jou
everything that has to do with you
and to try to deal with your illness
te managen? Ten eerste gebruik ik
to manage? First of all, I use
natuurlijk voor mijn diabetes
of course for my diabetes
de app die gelinkt is met
the app that is linked with
de sensortechnologie, die
the sensor technology that
eigenlijk op continue basis mijn
actually on a continuous basis my
glucosewaarde
glucose level
kan registreren. Ik denk dat
can register. I think that
that is a very obvious one and I think that
dat ook een heel mooi voorbeeld is
that is also a very nice example
van hoe mobile health
from how mobile health
of digitale technologie ingang kan
of digital technology can enter
vinden en waarde creëren, zowel
finding and creating value, both
voor patiënten, artsen, maatschappij
for patients, doctors, society
en zo verder. Dat is eigenlijk
and so on. That is actually
de meest belangrijke app.
the most important app.
And that is because I was also a patient there.
direct return krijg on investment.
direct return on investment.
Ik moet misschien
I might have to.
Occasionally entering some data, but that is
echt niet heel die sensor.
really not that whole sensor.
Je capteert constant de data
You constantly capture the data.
en geeft aanbevelingen, geeft trends,
and provides recommendations, presents trends,
geeft inzichten. Dus ik zou
provides insights. So I would
daar eigenlijk niet meer zonder kunnen.
actually can't do without it anymore.
Ik was lichtjes in paniek
I was slightly in a panic.
deze vakantie. Ik had maar
this vacation. I only had
één reserve sensor meegenomen.
One spare sensor taken along.
Ik vond dat wel al heel goed,
I found that already very good.
één reserve sensor.
one spare sensor.
Maar bij het
But at the
ja, dat is zo'n soort
yes, that's kind of like that
drugsysteem.
drug system.
Do you know those little devices, like when you
vroeger zo je adres
formerly your address
en je naam op een
and your name on a
envelopp wou zetten, dat je zo
envelope would like to set, that you so
een stempel, ja, en het is eigenlijk
a stamp, yes, and it is actually
that same mechanism that you have that sensor in your arm
kan duwen en dat mechanisme
can push and that mechanism
blokkeerde. Dus ja,
blocked. So yes,
verdorie, geen
damn, no
sensor. Dat is dan op dat
sensor. That is then at that
moment gewoon supergrote
moment just super big
paniek.
panic.
So I actually just can't do without it anymore.
En dan heb ik natuurlijk gewoon
And then I simply have
de app, ja, misschien ook heel evident,
the app, yes, maybe also very obvious,
maar de app van de verzekeraar.
but the app of the insurer.
Dat is ook enorm
That is also enormous.
geëvolueerd. Vroeger moest je
evolved. In the past you had to
elk briefje, elke dokters
every note, every doctor's
verslag met de post
report by post
opsturen. Tegenwoordig is
sending. Nowadays is
ja, verzekeraars innoveren ook, hè.
Yes, insurers innovate too, you know.
You can just easily use the app.
van je privéverzekeraar een foto
a photo from your private insurer
maken van je
make of you
ziekenhuiskost. En binnen
hospital cost. And within
de dag of zo heb je dat budget op je
You'll have that budget by the day or so.
rekening staan. Dat is ongelooflijk.
That is incredible.
En dat is heel praktisch. En ja, dat is fantastisch
And that is very practical. And yes, that is fantastic.
dat ook die
that also those
efficiëntiewinst gewoon gefaciliteerd
efficiency gain simply facilitated
wordt door digital apps.
is done by digital apps.
Headspace gebruik ik.
I use Headspace.
That's more for that part of, yes,
moeilijk kunnen slapen.
difficult to sleep.
En luister ik regelmatig
And I listen regularly.
naar, dat zijn verhalen,
to, those are stories,
die je daarop kan luisteren, maar ook
you can listen to there, but also
van die oefeningen
of those exercises
om tot rust te komen en om
to find peace and to
eigenlijk, ja, dat zijn gewoon heel grappige
Actually, yes, they are just very funny.
exercises where you first use your toes
moet bewegen, voeten bewegen,
must move, move feet,
Moving your legs makes you feel so calm.
So I actually think that's very nice.
ontdekking. En dan
discovery. And then
gebruik ik gewoon soms mijn,
I just sometimes use my,
ja, dat is eigenlijk
yes, that is actually
vermelden, maar gewoon mijn alarm
mention, but just my alarm
als ik bepaalde dingen van medicatie
if I certain things about medication
echt niet mag vergeten, die niet zo
really shouldn't forget, that not so
be standard, because this way you have the standard
medication that you always take, but if you so
a new product must be taken for two weeks,
ja, dan zet ik gewoon een
Yes, then I'll just put a
alarm. Dus dat zijn heel basic
alarm. So those are very basic
dingen. Ik heb ook een smartwatch,
things. I also have a smartwatch,
dus daar
so there
kan ik volgen
can I follow
van mijn beweging en dergelijke,
from my movement and such,
maar ik heb die nog niet geconnecteerd.
but I haven't connected that yet.
I do think that can be done in the meantime, because
dat ook te connecteren met je diabetes,
to connect that with your diabetes,
maar dat heb ik zelf
but I have that myself
nog niet gedaan, omdat ik denk ook,
not done yet, because I think too,
die technologie is gekomen bij mij
that technology has come to me
op een moment in mijn leven, dat
at a moment in my life, that
I already have quite a few insights about how.
beweging ook mijn diabetes beïnvloedt.
exercise also affects my diabetes.
Dus ik denk vooral
So I mainly think
jongere mensen, of mensen met een
younger people, or people with a
meer recente diagnose, dat dat
more recent diagnosis, that that
can be very valuable to that data
inzicht te hebben.
to have insight.
Veel endocrinologen werken nog altijd met
Many endocrinologists still work with
het schriftje en bijhouden wat
the notebook and keep track of what
en de waarden, en dan komt daar
and the values, and then comes there
patiënt Valerie voor hun neus zitten,
patient Valerie sitting in front of them,
haar diploma bioinformatica,
her degree in bioinformatics,
met alle sensoren
with all the sensors
en waarden uitgemeten, en
and values measured, and
je hebt een hele grote dataset rond
you have a very large dataset around
jezelf. Wordt daar dan
yourself. Is that then
more taken into account, or is that actually up to the
krant gelegd, te zeggen, hou je schriftje
Placed the newspaper, to say, keep your notebook.
maar bij?
but with?
Ondertussen meer en meer,
Meanwhile more and more,
maar ik denk dat ik inderdaad
but I think that I indeed
een van die eerste patiënten was
one of those first patients was
die het geluk had met die sensortechnologie
who was fortunate with that sensor technology
aan de slag te kunnen,
to be able to get started,
and at that moment it was also very
bizar, want je
bizarre, because you
krijgt dan zo'n sensortechnologie, en eigenlijk
then gets such sensor technology, and actually
Are you a bit naïve as a patient?
vanuit, van, als ik die technologie
from, from, when I have that technology
krijg, dan zullen al die
get, then all those
andere processen die daar rond horen ook
other processes that are related to it also belong there
wel op punt staan, en zal ook
well on the verge, and will also
wel iedereen weten hoe met die
Well, everyone knows how with that.
technologie te werken, en dat was eigenlijk
to work with technology, and that was actually
no, so that was very bizarre, you then got
inderdaad die sensor, je verzamelde
indeed that sensor, you collected
al die data, en in plaats
all that data, and instead
van je schriftje, had je
from your notebook, did you have
all of a sudden an app with all that data, you could
dan ook via die app toegang
then also access through that app
geven aan je
give to you
rugverstrekker, toegang geven tot je data,
back stretcher, grant access to your data,
so I think that's fantastic, that you have as
patiënt de controle, je kan zeggen
patient the control, you can say
that hospital, you cannot operate at the level of
choose the doctor, but you can say,
UZ Brussel mag mijn data
UZ Brussel may use my data.
inkijken, ik kan die ook delen met
looking in, I can also share that with
UZ Leuven and other institutions, I have been there.
actually completely in control, I think that's fantastic.
Dat is niet het geval voor
That is not the case for
mijn beelden van de radiologie,
my images from radiology,
die vaak gewoon in UZ Brussel
often just in UZ Brussels
stuck, and when I want to go to Leuven,
voor een second opinion, ja,
for a second opinion, yes,
dan zit er wel een soort foto
Then there is a kind of photo.
in mijn patiëntenportaal, maar als ik dan
in my patient portal, but when I then
bij Leuven kom, zeggen die van, ja,
when I come to Leuven, they say, yes,
mevrouw, die foto, die resolutie,
madam, that photo, that resolution,
we can't do anything with that, we need the original
beelden in die software, anders,
images in that software, otherwise,
Alright, let's take that photo again.
Met diabetes is dat niet, je hebt
With diabetes, that is not the case, you have
ineens controle, dat vind ik fantastisch,
all of a sudden a check, I think that's fantastic,
but I shared that with my hospital,
ik kom op die consultatie aan,
I arrive at that consultation,
ja, eerste wat ze vragen is natuurlijk,
Yes, the first thing they ask is of course,
waar is uw schriftje?
Where is your notebook?
Ja, ik gebruik mijn schriftje
Yes, I use my notebook.
niet meer, want het is onmogelijk,
no more, because it is impossible,
I have continuous data, how are you going to write that down?
Dat gaat gewoon niet meer.
That's just not going to work anymore.
Yes, every evening everything is overwritten by the app.
Inderdaad.
Indeed.
Ja, ja, ja. Maar dan merk je ook
Yes, yes, yes. But then you also notice
dat dat was zelfs nog gewoon
that was even still just
niet geïnstalleerd, dus die
not installed, so that
verpleegkundige, dat was super
nurse, that was great
ongemakkelijk, want die had zoiets van,
awkward, because he had something like,
Yes, where am I supposed to find that data now?
Yes, where are they then? I said, yes, but I shared that.
Je zou daar normaal toegang voor
You would normally have access to that.
must have taken, so that definitely took an hour,
en dat is toen niet gelukt
and that didn't work out back then
om die data te vinden.
to find that data.
Ja, dus
Yes, so
the next time I came by, I think
Well, it worked out that we did have the platform.
al hadden gevonden, maar dan
had found, but then
merkte ik ook doorheen de consultatie,
I noticed this throughout the consultation.
and then there is always a gap of a few months in between,
ja, de mensen
yes, the people
werden niet opgeleid
were not trained
om die data te interpreteren.
to interpret that data.
Dus de
So the
producent van die technologie heeft een heel
producer of that technology has a very
mooi klinisch dashboard gemaakt.
Beautiful clinical dashboard created.
Ja, we kennen dat bijna, hè.
Yes, we almost know that, don't we?
We are also somewhat on the technology side,
and you create very nice dashboards with the idea
dat dan die zorgkundigen,
that then those caregivers,
een mooi overzicht heeft,
has a nice overview,
die zorgkundigen te helpen in de beslissingsondersteuning,
to assist those caregivers in decision support,
voor het maken van bepaalde
for the creation of certain
beslissingen, inzichten te geven.
to provide decisions, insights.
Maar ja, die zorgkundige heeft geen idee
But yes, that caregiver has no idea.
waar te zoeken. Zelfs al is dat
where to search. Even if that is
heel user-friendly dan nog,
very user-friendly then,
als daar geen training bij zit,
if there is no training included,
dan blijft dat heel moeilijk.
then that remains very difficult.
So we will look at that platform together,
en op een bepaald moment hebben ze
and at a certain point they have
or a specific idea of where they should look,
maar ze hebben zo heel veel
but they have so much
de neiging om nog steeds,
the tendency to still,
zoals vroeger, te kijken naar één week,
like before, to look at one week,
voor de consultatie. Dus dat is hetzelfde
for the consultation. So that is the same
met het schriftje. Het schriftje is
with the notebook. The notebook is
één week voordat je op consultatie komt,
one week before you come for a consultation,
noteer je de ochtendwaarde,
do you note the morning value,
the value for food, two hours after eating,
dus die waardes noteer je.
So you note those values.
Dus ik merkte met die sensor,
So I noticed with that sensor,
ik had drie maanden continue data,
I had three months of continuous data,
en de verpleegkundige deed enkel
and the nurse did only
de week voor de consultatie open.
the week before the consultation opens.
So that also takes a long time again.
geduurd, denk ik, voordat
lasted, I think, before
mensen gewoon zijn met die systemen
people are just with those systems
te werken, of misschien nu al eens
to work, or perhaps even now
de scope van drie maanden te nemen,
to take the scope of three months,
om al beter te begrijpen waarom
to better understand why
there are red lines that represent a kind of
trend aanduiden. Dus je merkt
indicate trend. So you notice
wel, maar dat heeft tijd
well, but that takes time
gekost, dat je nu
cost, that you now
does notice that people are becoming more accustomed
om met die systemen te werken,
to work with those systems,
beter weten hoe ze die data dienen
better know how to serve that data
te interpreteren en daarnaar te kijken.
to interpret and then to look at it.
Maar ja, dat is
But yes, that is
wel een grote switch, van
well a big switch, from
een schriftje met een paar waarden
a notebook with a few values
naar ineens, wow, statistieken,
to suddenly, wow, statistics,
trends,
trends,
verschillende visualisaties
various visualizations
en grafiekjes en
and little graphs and
pie-diagrammen.
pie charts.
Ja, begin er maar aan.
Yes, go ahead.
Actually, that should also be in the training.
al moeten zitten, zowel van bestaand personeel
must sit down, both from existing staff
als van de nieuwe opleiding,
as of the new training,
of de opleiding van de nieuwe mensen
of the training of the new people
die nu aan het studeren zijn.
who are currently studying.
Zeker. Ik denk dat dat gewoon
Sure. I think that just
een onderdeel
a component
van data
of data
en die klinische dashboards
and those clinical dashboards
and how to use that data as well
in het vormgeven van de
in shaping the
processen, van die dagelijkse operationele
processes, of those daily operations
processen ook, ja, dat gaat
processes too, yes, that's going
daar toch ergens moeten inkomen, of
have to get in somewhere after all, or
misschien lijkt aan de universiteit een
maybe it seems at the university a
hassel, weet ik, dat ze ook die
hassle, I know that they also that
opleiding hebben van healthcare engineer,
training in healthcare engineering,
dus iemand,
so someone,
een soort ingenieur rond
a kind of engineer running around
zorgprocessen optimaliseren,
and that is necessary, that is truly, truly
nodig. En het ziekenhuis
needed. And the hospital
just notices that, despite being already
breder kijken naar meer data,
looking more broadly at more data,
dat ze de data nog niet altijd
that they do not always have the data yet
gebruiken om processen te optimiseren,
to use to optimize processes,
optimaliseren. Ik ga nog altijd
optimize. I am still going
aan dezelfde frequentie naar het
at the same frequency to the
ziekenhuis als vroeger. Dus dan
hospital like before. So then
Are we coming to that topic we just discussed?
kort even al over hadden gesproken, van
we briefly talked about it, from
ja, een nieuwe technologie
Yes, a new technology
implementeren in een
implement in a
oud proces, wordt gewoon een duur
old process, just becomes expensive
oud proces. En daar hebben we nog
old process. And we still have that
wel wat stappen te nemen.
well, what steps to take.
Die processen worden niet aangepast,
Those processes are not being adjusted,
dus we betalen als maatschappij
So we pay as a society.
extra voor die sensortechnologie,
extra for that sensor technology,
dat heeft een kost,
that has a cost,
maar we winnen
but we win
nog te weinig door
still too little through
te zeggen van, ah, maar Valérie,
to say, ah, but Valérie,
jouw diabetes is heel goed onder
Your diabetes is very well managed.
controle. De arts kan dat van
check. The doctor can do that of
op afstand zien, die heeft toegang
see from a distance, that one has access
tot jouw data. Misschien kunnen we wel
to your data. Maybe we can
twee van de vier
two of the four
jaarlijkse consultaties
annual consultations
overslaan. Op het moment dat er een
skip. At the moment when there is a
probleem is, herbekijken we dat,
the problem is, if we review that,
plannen we een nieuwe consultatie in.
Let's schedule a new consultation.
Dat is nog onvoldoende op dit
That is still insufficient at this point.
moment. Dus alle patiënten gaan nog
moment. So all patients are still going
altijd door datzelfde proces
always through that same process
van, ik zend al een keer per
"from, I send already once per"
jaar naar het ziekenhuis. En daar kunnen we, denk ik,
year to the hospital. And there we can, I think,
wel met data heel wat efficiëntie
well with data quite a bit of efficiency
genereren. En kunnen we de dingen anders
generate. And can we do things differently
aanpakken. We kunnen dat combineren met
tackling. We can combine that with
teleconsultaties. En dat is even
teleconsultations. And that is just
geweest tijdens COVID. Yes,
been during COVID. Yes,
joepie, ik moet niet naar Brussel.
Yay, I don't have to go to Brussels.
Mijn arts belt mij op.
My doctor is calling me.
Dat gesprekje dat we hebben in dat
That conversation we have in that
klein vergaderzaaltje
small meeting room
van het ziekenhuis, kunnen we eigenlijk ook
from the hospital, we can actually also
over de telefoon hebben. Diabetes
have over the phone. Diabetes
is een discipline waar nog
is a discipline where still
heel weinig fysiek onderzoek gebeurt.
very little physical examination is done.
Dat is eigenlijk echt een data-gedreven
That is actually really data-driven.
discipline. Dat is af en toe,
discipline. That is sometimes,
een oogonderzoek, af en toe een keer
an eye examination, occasionally once
looking at the toes to see if the small blood vessels
nog niet toegeslipt zijn.
have not yet slipped in.
But for the rest, that is actually really a
data-gedreven ziekte.
data-driven disease.
Dat kan perfect, telefoon is.
That works perfectly, phone is.
Maar jammer genoeg, na COVID is dat
But unfortunately, after COVID that is
terug naar de reguliere
back to the regular
ziekenhuisconsultatie
hospital consultation
gegaan. Jammer.
gone. Too bad.
Hoe zou je dat als patiënt
How would you feel about that as a patient?
willen zien vorm
want to see shape
krijgen dan? Ja, ik kan me voorstellen
What do we get then? Yes, I can imagine.
dat, ja, wij zijn als
that, yes, we are like
gezondheidszorg zo gewoond
healthcare so accustomed
te werken met die klinische studies
to work with those clinical studies
en die population-based
and that population-based
en grote aantallen
and large numbers
patiënten waar je dan een bepaald
patients where you then have a certain
traject valideert
trajectory validates
and says, that is a good care pathway,
dat is veilig,
that is safe,
dat leidt tot goede uitkomsten.
that leads to good outcomes.
Dus ik kan me voorstellen dat
So I can imagine that
voor een zorgverlener, zo de N is 1,
for a healthcare provider, if N is 1,
de single patient,
the single patient,
het pad gaan personaliseren,
personalizing the path,
dat dat ook, ja, niet
that that also, yes, not
zo evident is, naar safety misschien.
so evident is, perhaps towards safety.
And yes, you also don't have that obviousness,
that you are simply used to having, from
is dat dan voldoende om Valérie
Is that enough for Valérie?
maar twee keer per jaar te zien? En hoe doen we
but seen only twice a year? And how do we do it?
dat dan met terugbetalingen? En die
what about refunds then? And those
conventie, ja, die conventie voor
convention, yes, that convention for
diabetes, dat is echt een zorgpad.
Diabetes, that is really a care pathway.
Dat is iedereen volgens dezelfde,
That is everyone according to the same,
op dezelfde manier. Dus
in the same way. So
structureel is dat niet zo gemakkelijk
Structurally, that's not so easy.
for a doctor to say, I'm going
dat hier nu eens hertekenen.
to redraw that here now.
Daar moeten dan heel wat stakeholders bij
Many stakeholders need to be involved in that.
betrokken zijn. Maar als patiënt kun je
be involved. But as a patient, you can
daarover dromen. Je kunt,
dream about it. You can,

if you need it, you can just get it very locally,

oogonderzoek laten doen.
have an eye examination done.
Wij hebben ook toegang tot die data.
We also have access to that data.
Je kunt dat zorgpad zo hertekenen
You can redraw that care path.
dat dat zo patient-centric is
that it is so patient-centric
that it really revolves around how we can
die persoon, dat individu, zo goed
that person, that individual, so good
mogelijk helpen. Ja, ik kan
possible help. Yes, I can
daar heel veel over dromen.
dreaming a lot about it.
And why isn't it happening now, do you think?
Ja, om die verschillende redenen
Yes, for those various reasons.
van die historiek
of that history
die we hebben vanuit geneeskunde,
that we have from medicine,
dat we gewoon zijn om te werken
that we are simply used to working
op evidence-based manieren.
on evidence-based methods.
Ook dat stukje van incentive,
Also that part of incentive,
vanuit de overheid.
from the government.
Natuurlijk, die arts,
Of course, that doctor,
die wordt natuurlijk betaald
that will of course be paid
per prestatie, die wordt betaald
per performance, that is paid
voor iedere keer ik op consultatie
for every time I go for a consultation
kom. Dat moet
Come. That must.
natuurlijk allemaal hertekend worden.
of course they all need to be redrawn.
And what I often wonder about is,
als ik mijn facturen krijg,
when I receive my invoices,
ja, ik vind dat altijd veel.
Yes, I always find that a lot.
Er zit ook een groot deel
There is also a large part.
voor de patiënt nog altijd bij.
still there for the patient.
Dat gaat iedere keer over 50 euro of zo
It's always about 50 euros or so.
dat je kwijt bent. Je gaat meermaals
that you are lost. You will go multiple times
per maand naar het ziekenhuis.
per month to the hospital.
Maar als je die totaalkost kijkt,
But if you look at the total cost,
wat ook dan de mutualiteit koffert,
what the mutuality also brings,
dan gaat dat over heel veel geld.
Then it's about a lot of money.
And the question that always comes to my mind is
What if I had to pay for this myself now?
Wat als ik nu die 250 euro
What if I take that 250 euros now?
zelf moest betalen?
had to pay myself?
Zou ik dat nog doen?
Would I still do that?
Zou ik nog op die consultatie gaan?
Should I still attend that consultation?
Zou ik dat onderzoek nog laten uitvoeren?
Should I still have that research conducted?
Ik denk het eigenlijk niet.
I actually don't think so.
Maar zolang dat dan de mutualiteit
But as long as that is the mutuality.
en het regie van de overheid
and the direction of the government
dat allemaal blijft financieren,
that all continues to be financed,
dan ga je mee als patiënt
then you come along as a patient
in dat circus en dan denk je
in that circus and then you think
Okay, I will go for this research again.
Ik zal dat nog maar eens doen.
I will do that again.
I will go for a consultation once again.
But the day that I have to pay for it myself,
then I would stand on the barricade
and say sorry, but this is just
onhouden. Dit kunnen we niet houden
stop. We cannot keep this.
als maatschappij.
as a society.
Dat gebeurt op dit moment onvoldoende.
That is not happening sufficiently at this moment.
So I think that funding is also a bit
herbekeken moet worden.
needs to be re-evaluated.
Het aantal onderzoeken,
The number of investigations,
het herhalen van onderzoeken,
the repetition of research,
die voor elke patiënt hetzelfde zijn,
that are the same for every patient,
ondanks misschien de ene patiënt
despite perhaps one patient
veel minder zorg of consultaties
much less care or consultations
nodig heeft.
needs.
But that's a lot of work if you do all that.
moet opzetten. En die zorgverleners
must set up. And those care providers
zijn onderbemand.
are understaffed.
Dus die moeten nu al
So they have to do it now already.
keihard werken om in dat
working very hard to achieve that
to be able to continue the framework and all those patients
te zien.
to see.
Ik zeg, je diabetes
I say, your diabetes.
rekent meer als 30 minuten,
takes more than 30 minutes,
45 minuten wachttijd.
45 minutes wait time.
Die kliniek zit vol.
The clinic is full.
Dat is een pandemie,
That is a pandemic,
diabetes.
diabetes.
So those caregivers don't know where to start.
En dan verwachten dat die mensen
And then expect those people
zich nog kunnen bezighouden
still being able to keep busy
met het hertekenen van die processen.
with the redrawing of those processes.
Ja, dat is eigenlijk niet realistisch.
Yes, that is actually not realistic.
Dus daar, ja, ik zie dat
So there, yes, I see that.
niet zo gemakkelijk veranderen.
not so easy to change.
Tenzij we daar meer middelen,
Unless we have more resources there,
juiste profielen opzetten,
setting up the right profiles,
juiste incentives,
correct incentives,
bepaalde regelgevingen of zorgpaden
certain regulations or care pathways
herdefiniëren.
redefine.
Dus werk en de winkel.
So work and the store.
Maar meer?
But more?
Meer middelen om het te herdefiniëren,
More resources to redefine it,
niet om het bestaande proces
not for the existing process
te vermenigvuldigen.
to multiply.
Nee, nee, nee, alsjeblieft niet.
No, no, no, please don't.
Laten we het misschien gewoon eens even kritisch
Let's just take a critical look at it for a moment.
take a closer look. I would actually still like to do it.
now that we are talking here like this,
om een keer samen met mijn arts,
to meet with my doctor once,
diabetesarts, een keer daar rond
diabetes doctor, once around there
te brainstormen. Maar ik denk
to brainstorm. But I think
dat we heel snel gaan merken
that we will notice very soon
dat er heel wat structuren zijn
that there are quite a few structures
waar je natuurlijk in vastzit.
where you are of course stuck.
En dat is de moeilijkheid en gezondheidszorg.
And that is the difficulty and healthcare.
Je kan zo weinig,
You can do so little,
als single stakeholder,
as a single stakeholder,
je hebt altijd de hele
you always have the whole
race en stakeholders nodig
race and stakeholders needed
om iets te kunnen veranderen.
to be able to change something.
And I think that is also the difference with others.
industrieën, waar je misschien iets makkelijker kan
industries, where you might find it a bit easier
zeggen van, wij doen dat gewoon.
saying, we just do that.
Wij doen dat gewoon anders.
We just do it differently.
In de zorg zit je daar natuurlijk,
In healthcare, you are of course there,
is dat complexer.
Is that more complex.
Maar aan de andere kant, ja,
But on the other hand, yes,
er zijn mooie pilootprojecten, er zijn mooie
there are beautiful pilot projects, there are beautiful
initiatieven. En langzamerhand
initiatives. And gradually
merk je het wel. Ik mag niet klagen,
you notice it. I can't complain,
ik heb een sensor, ik heb data,
I have a sensor, I have data.
dus je ziet ook wel
so you can see as well
heel veel hoopgevende signalen
very many hopeful signals
dat we verbetering
that we improve
krijgen, dat we inzetten
get, that we invest
op innovatie. Je voelt ook die
on innovation. You also feel that
bereidheid bij artsen om misschien
willingness among doctors to perhaps
wel na te denken over hoe
considering how
AI kan helpen en efficiëntie
AI can help and efficiency.
genereren. Dus ik ben wel,
generate. So I am,
ondanks het moeilijk is, ben ik wel
Although it is difficult, I am still.
superpositief en ben ik als patiënt
super positive and I am as a patient
enorm dankbaar voor de efforts
extremely grateful for the efforts
die er geleverd worden door de zorg.
that are provided by the care.
Data is
Data is
al heel vaak aan bod gekomen
many times discussed
hier, maar je zit natuurlijk
Here, but you are of course sitting
met een zeldzame ziekte, en zeker
with a rare disease, and certainly
in tijden van AI, die
in times of AI, which
heel veel datahonger heeft om
has a great deal of data hunger to
goed zijn ding te kunnen doen.
to be able to do the right thing.
How can you do that in the context of
een zeldzame ziekte toch voldoende data
a rare disease still enough data
bij je krijgen?
get to you?
Dat is ook een topic waar je
That is also a topic where you
me heel sterk interesseert.
interests me very much.
En, ja,
And, yes,
ik ben ook, ik heb het
I am too, I have it.
fortunate to have had a lot of that too
mogen leren, doordat ik
may learn, because I
op een bepaald moment door de Europese
at a certain moment by the European
muco-patiëntorganisatie
mucoviscidosis patient organization
gevraagd ben geweest van Valérie,
I have been asked by Valérie,
ze zoeken een patiëntenstem
they are looking for a patient voice
binnen het steering committee
within the steering committee
van het Europese
from the European
patiëntenregister.
patient registry.
I think that was a very strong signal.
also at that moment, that they there a
patiëntenstem in willen.
wanting patient voice.
Dus dat is een groep van
So that is a group of
artsen, Europese,
doctors, European,
top-experten in muco
top experts in muco
die daar gisteren opgestart
that started there yesterday
hebben, samen met die
have, together with that
Europese patiëntenorganisatie.
European patient organization.
En dat initiatief is eigenlijk
And that initiative is actually
heel mooi. En dat is ook
very beautiful. And that is also
echt een voorbeeld voor andere ziektedomeinen.
truly an example for other disease domains.
Dus, ja, Lisbeth Peters
So, yes, Lisbeth Peters
die heel wat werk
that requires a lot of work
verzet ook rond MS.
resistance also around MS.
Een MS data alliance
An MS data alliance
en het bijeenbrengen van data rond
and the gathering of data around
MS. Ja,
MS. Yes,
I've also had nice conversations with them because
we eigenlijk voor mucovisie-dozen
we actually for mucoviscidosis boxes
een heel gelijkaardig groot
a very similar large
project hebben.
to have a project.
En ik ben ook heel fier, want in de
And I am also very proud, because in the
period that I am part of the steering committee
zat, dat was van
sat, that was from
2020 tot 2023,
2020 to 2023,
dat is iedere keer drie jaar dat
that is every time three years that
je als arts of patiënt mag zedelen
you may make love as a doctor or patient
in that committee and then someone will come again
nieuw gekozen,
newly elected,
zijn we als register,
are we as a registry,
Europees register, ook erkend
European register, also recognized
geworden door het EMA, het
become by the EMA, the
Europese
European
Medicine Agency of Geneesmiddelenagenten,
Medicine Agency of Medicines Agents,
en dat is ook een
and that is also a
officiële
official
databron voor bijvoorbeeld
data source for example
de farma-industrie fase 4 studies.
the pharma industry phase 4 studies.
Dus fase 4 zijn studies
So phase 4 is studies.
om eigenlijk die
to actually that
effectiviteit en die veiligheid
effectiveness and safety
van nieuwe medicatie
of new medication
ook in de
also in the
real world, dus buiten de gecontroleerde
real world, so outside the controlled
klinische studie, om die
clinical study, to investigate that
te blijven monitoren gedurende
to continue monitoring for
een lange periode.
a long period.
En natuurlijk hebben die bedrijven daar
And of course those companies there have
data needed, so they will collect that for it
patiënten die op die medicatie staan
patients who are on that medication
data die dan de
data that then the
effectiviteit en de veiligheid
effectiveness and safety
moet bewijzen. En we hebben daar
must prove. And we have there
met ons Europees register zijn wij nu
with our European register we are now
de, volgens EMA,
the, according to EMA,
aangewezen bron om
designated source for
farmaspelers om met ons samen te werken
pharmaceutical companies to collaborate with us
om toegang te hebben tot die
to have access to that
data. Maar initieel is dat
data. But initially that is
register opgezet geweest gewoon voor artsen,
register set up just for doctors,
academische onderzoekers,
academic researchers,
om onderzoek te kunnen doen
to be able to conduct research
naar zeldzame ziekten,
to rare diseases,
om die data te gaan poelen.
to start pooling that data.
In België zijn er 1300
In Belgium, there are 1300.
patiënten. Mucovisidoze
patients. Cystic fibrosis
is de meest frequent
is the most frequent
voorkomende zeldzame ziekte.
common rare disease.
In Europa
In Europe
zijn er meer dan 50.000
are there more than 50,000
patiënten. Dus dat Europees
patients. So that European
register heeft nu ongeveer 54.000
The register now has about 54,000.
patiënten, waarvan
patients, of whom
we de data
the data
verzamelen. En dat is een heel
collecting. And that is a very
werk natuurlijk, want je werkt
Of course, because you are working.
samen met nationale
together with national
registers. Dus we hebben ook in België
registers. So we also have in Belgium
het Belgisch mucovisidoze register
the Belgian cystic fibrosis register
en zo heb je dat in de meeste
and so you have that in most
Europese landen. En dan poel je
European countries. And then you pool.
eigenlijk die data uit die nationale
actually that data from the national
Are you going to register again at the European level?
niveau verzamelen. En dan werkt het
level collecting. And then it works
Europees register samen met Australisch
European register together with Australian
register en met het
register and with the
register in Noord-Amerika. En dat
register in North America. And that
maakt dat je toch al van ongeveer 100.000
that makes you already at about 100,000
patiënten data kan
patient data can
poelen rond
pools around
demografische gegevens,
demographic data,
klinische outcomes,
clinical outcomes,
heel recente quality of life.
very recent quality of life.
Ze zoeken ook naar gevalideerde vragenlijsten,
They are also looking for validated questionnaires,
om die patiënt quality of life
to improve that patient's quality of life
mee te nemen, medicatie,
to take along, medication,
en dat is superinteressant.
and that is super interesting.
Maar ook soms, ja,
But also sometimes, yes,
ik weet dat ik ooit naar
I know that I once went to
Oekraïne ben geweest, naar Kiev,
I have been to Ukraine, to Kiev.
voor een presentatie te geven
to give a presentation
over het register. En als je
about the register. And if you
dan naar die data kijkt van Oost-
then looks at that data from East-
Europese landen, dan verschiet je
European countries, then you are surprised.
wel heel hard. Dan zie je dat
well very hard. Then you see that
die gemiddelde levensverwachting in België
the average life expectancy in Belgium
dertig of ouder is ondertussen.
thirty or older is meanwhile.
Maar in Oekraïne
But in Ukraine
zat dat rond tien, veertien
was that around ten, fourteen
jaar. De toegang tot
year. The access to
medicatie in Oost-Europese
medication in Eastern European
landen is schrijnend.
The situation is heartbreaking.
Dus heel veel geneesmiddelen die voor ons
So many medications that are for us
basiszorg
basic care
bijna zijn, zijn daar
almost there, being there
niet voor handen. Dus
not available. So
dat register heeft een enorme
that register has an enormous
waarde, ook voor andere
value, also for others
Europese landen, om te kunnen
European countries, in order to be able to
aantonen aan hun policymakers
demonstrating to their policymakers
van kijk, dit zijn de data
Look, these are the data.
van ons land, dit zijn de data
from our country, these are the data
van landen waar die geneesmiddelen ter
from countries where those medications are available
beschikking zijn, dit zijn de outcomes van
be available, these are the outcomes of
onze patiënten. En dat helpt
our patients. And that helps
ook die data om eigenlijk weer opnieuw
also that data to actually start over again
dat stukje toegang tot
that piece of access to
zorg te versnellen, te verbeteren,
to accelerate care, to improve,
dat stukje advocacy, wat echt
that piece of advocacy, which is really
mijn passie is. Als je dat niet kan
my passion is. If you can't do that
onderbouwen met data, sta je
support with data, do you stand?
als patiënt heel zwak. Als je
as a patient very weak. If you
als patiëntorganisatie data hebt van
as a patient organization, you have data from
over heel de wereld, voor jouw specifieke
around the world, for your specific
disease area, dan kan je een dossier
disease area, then you can create a file
opmaken en dan kan je dingen
get ready and then you can do things
aantonen. Dan kan je onderzoek doen
demonstrate. Then you can do research.
and then you can see like, okay, why do it
do those patients in those regions do better?
Wat zijn de zorgprocessen?
What are the care processes?
Wat kunnen we leren van elkaar?
What can we learn from each other?
And so there are also very nice programs.
opgestart van die buddy-systemen.
Started the buddy systems.
Ook rond data,
Also around data,
waar bepaalde landen het moeilijker hadden
where certain countries had a harder time
to start such a register, because yes, also
dat is een discipline,
that is a discipline,
dat is kennis.
that is knowledge.
Buddies, die dan van het register van
Buddies, those then from the register of
de UK, want daar is een prachtig
the UK, because there is a beautiful
heel sterk register met enorm
very strong register with enormous
veel data, supergoede data-kwaliteit,
lots of data, super good data quality,
gaan dan naar
going then to
Oost-Europa, in een soort buddy-systeem
Eastern Europe, in a kind of buddy system
om ook te zorgen dat daar
to also ensure that there
data gecollecteerd worden en dat daar
data is being collected and that there
systemen opgezet worden
systems are being set up
om die datacollectie te
to collect that data
faciliteren. Dus ja, ik vind
facilitate. So yes, I think
dat nog altijd een fantastisch
that is still fantastic
initiatief, zo'n register.
initiative, such a register.
Misschien technologisch wat achterhaald,
Perhaps somewhat technologically outdated,
want je probeert al die data te
because you're trying all that data to
poelen, te centraliseren.
to centralize.
Dat is een apart software-systeem
That is a separate software system.
dat daarvoor opgezet is.
that has been set up for that.
And you are actually asking to copy the data.
uit de
out of
health record van de patiënt.
patient's health record.
In dat apart systeem.
In that separate system.
En daarmee dat er ook heel veel
And with that, there is also a lot
innovatieve spelers zijn.
are innovative players.
And then we come back to a podcast, a guest of yours.
Tom, Hans Constant, met de
Tom, Hans Constant, with the
pods en de data
pods and the data
vaults in de cloud, waar de patiënt
vaults in the cloud, where the patient
zijn data kan
his data can
collecteren en toegang kan geven
collecting and providing access
aan bijvoorbeeld zo'n register. En zeggen van
to, for example, such a register. And say of
kijk, register, ik vertrouw
look, register, I trust
u als
you as
custodian
custodian
van mijn data. En ik deel
of my data. And I share
mijn data met jou direct. En nu
my data with you directly. And now
I will get it, I will show it now shortly, a
consent, weer al, van vijf, zes
consent, again, from five, six
pagina's. Oké, dat ga je dan ook hebben.
pages. Okay, you will have that too.
So I sign the consent and then it gets
dat heel proces in gang gezet, waarbij mijn
that whole process set in motion, in which my
arts dan iedere keer die data
art then every time those data
moet uploaden in dat systeem. En dat
must upload into that system. And that
is nog altijd manueel werk. En daarom
is still manual work. And that's why
kost een register veel geld.
Does a register cost a lot of money?
Dus we hebben geld nodig.
So we need money.
Want zonder geld kunnen wij dat register
Because without money we cannot register that.
niet functioneel houden.
keep it non-functional.
En die samenwerking met
And that collaboration with
de pharma-industrie, dat was misschien
the pharma industry, that was perhaps
niet direct hetgene waarvoor
not exactly what for
het opgezet is. Maar we hebben
it is set up. But we have
just need that money because we need the people
die constant bezig zijn met het bewaken
who are constantly busy monitoring
van die data-kwaliteit, die data
of that data quality, that data
in te geven, die moeten betaald worden.
to be given, which must be paid.
That is just the harsh reality of a
register. En daarom waren we zo
register. And that is why we were so
Glad that we have been recognized by EMA.
als een register
as a register
dat gebruikt kan worden voor fase 4 studies.
that can be used for phase 4 studies.
Omdat dat voor ons een soort
Because for us it's a kind of
inkomstenbron is. Maar we zijn
source of income is. But we are
daar heel, heel waakzaam op.
be very, very vigilant about that.
We geven nooit data aan pharma.
We never give data to pharma.
Dus pharma geeft de onderzoeksvragen.
So pharma provides the research questions.
Wij doen de analyses
We do the analyses.
en we geven hun de resultaten
and we give them the results
van de analyses. Dus daar wordt wel heel
of the analyses. So that's very
goed over gewaakt. Er zijn ook
well guarded. There are also
comité's rond, scientific comité's
committees around, scientific committees
om die vragen van pharma
to answer those questions from pharma
te evalueren. Maar ook
to evaluate. But also
altijd te zorgen dat er
always ensure that there
waarde gecreëerd wordt voor die patiënt.
Value is created for that patient.
Ze kunnen niet met
They cannot with
een vraag komen die niet relevant is.
a question that is not relevant.
Het moet relevant zijn. Het moet
It must be relevant. It must.
gepubliceerd worden, de uitkomsten.
to be published, the outcomes.
Zodat er ook altijd
So that there is always
opnieuw waardecreatie is voor de maatschappij.
Recreating value is essential for society.
Voor de patiënt die uiteindelijk
For the patient who ultimately
de data geeft.
the data provides.
En wat hoop je dat er uit die data
And what do you hope will come from that data?
ooit gaat komen?
will ever come?
Nieuwe inzichten of nieuwe therapieën?
New insights or new therapies?
Wat is de
What is the
initiële doelstelling geweest om al die data
initial objective has been to gather all that data
te poelen, naast onderzoek doen?
to do internships, in addition to conducting research?
Voor mij het belangrijkste is die
For me, the most important thing is that
access to innovation. In Duitsland
access to innovation. In Germany
bijvoorbeeld, dat is
for example, that is
fantastisch. Daar hebben ze denk ik
fantastic. I think they have that.
IMA plus one.
IMA plus one.
Dat één maand na de
That one month after the
Europese market authorization
European market authorization
dus als in Europa
so in Europe
beslist wordt dat medicament
It is decided that medication.
is safe and effective and may be marketed
komen, dan weten patiënten
come, then patients know
in Duitsland dat ze één maand later
in Germany that they one month later
toegang hebben tot die medicatie.
to have access to that medication.
In België denk ik
In Belgium, I think.
dat volgens een van de meest recente
that according to one of the most recent
rapporten, want er wordt wel gemonitord
reports, because there is monitoring
van hoe lang duurt dat tussen
how long does that last in between
IMA approval en
IMA approval and
terugbetaling en toegang.
refund and access.
Ik denk dat voor Vertex was dat
I think that was for Vertex.
zes jaar
six years
voor de eerste moleculen.
for the first molecules.
Inmiddels is dat rond de 700
In the meantime, that is around 700.
dagen. Dat is
days. That is
lang. En met data
language. And with data
and with registers you can show tones of
"Take a look in Germany and see what."
the impact is on the health outcomes of that
patiënten, doordat die toegang hebben
patients, because they have access
tot die nieuwe medicatie. Dus ja,
to that new medication. So yes,
I think data is the beginning of everything.
Je kan eigenlijk bijna geen advocacy
You can hardly do any advocacy.
meer doen als patiënt of geen claims
do more as a patient or no claims
meer maken als je die niet kan
make more if you can't do that
ondersteunen. Dus die data
support. So that data
zijn heel belangrijk voor het land om
are very important for the country to
inzicht te krijgen. Er wordt denk ik nog
to gain insight. I think there is still
niet echt vergeleken tussen ziekenhuizen
not really compared between hospitals
binnen een land. Dat ligt heel gevoelig.
within a country. That is very sensitive.
Je kunt je voorstellen, we gaan eens kijken
You can imagine, we are going to take a look.
hoe doet UZ Brussel het versus hoe doet
how does UZ Brussel perform versus how does
UZ Leuven het. Ja,
UZ Leuven it. Yes,
that is not the purpose of the register.
Maar wat wel wordt gedaan is
But what is being done is
landen, tussen landen vergelijken
countries, comparing countries
met het idee van ja, misschien
with the idea of yes, maybe
kunnen we wel leren van elkaar. Misschien
we can learn from each other. Maybe
we can certainly learn from the best in the class.
And maybe we can be the least best,
de slechtste student van de klas ook
the worst student in the class too
we will help and support, so that it will be as quickly
mogelijk mee kan op het niveau
possibly can go at the level
van de beste van de klas.
of the best in the class.
En ja, dat zie je gewoon
And yes, you can just see that.
gebeuren. En Muco is
happen. And Muco is
een soort voorbeeld. Ons register is een
a kind of example. Our register is a
voorbeeld, omdat het operationeel werkt.
example, because it works operationally.
Is dat een voorbeeld
Is that an example?
voor veel andere ziektes?
for many other diseases?
En daar zijn we ook wel allemaal
And that's where we all are as well.
heel fier op, dat we dat
very proud that we do that
hebben gerealiseerd.
have realized.
De rode
The red
draad door ongeveer alles wat
thread through almost everything that
you have ever done in your entire life
is altijd die patient advocacy.
is always that patient advocacy.
Hoe zou jij dat omschrijven?
How would you describe that?
Welke rol neem jij
What role do you take?
daarin op? Of hoe leg je dat uit aan
What do you mean by that? Or how do you explain that to...?
iemand die niet weet wat
someone who doesn't know what
een patient advocate is?
A patient advocate is?
Die rol is ook wel geëvolueerd
That role has also evolved.
voor mezelf, maar dat
for myself, but that
is eigenlijk vooral begonnen, in het begin,
has actually mainly started, in the beginning,
met gewoon checks
with regular checks
gaan innen. Dus
going to collect. So
de Muco-vereniging doet heel wat
The Muco association does quite a lot.
events. Het jammeren
events. The lamenting
is, door die kruisinfectie,
is, due to that cross-infection,
door die gevaar van bacteriën
due to the danger of bacteria
uitwisselen tussen patiënten, dat we eigenlijk
exchange between patients, that we actually
geen events hebben waar veel
no events that have many
patiënten samenkomen. Dus ik kon eigenlijk nooit
patients coming together. So I could actually never
met andere patiënten fysiek ontmoeten.
meet physically with other patients.
Facebook heeft er daarna
Facebook has since then
well taken care of so that you can have some contact,
maar ik heb eigenlijk
but I actually have
nauwelijks een andere
hardly another
Muco-patiënt in real life
Muco patient in real life
ontmoet.
meet. And in the waiting room that is always the case too
heel ongemakkelijk afstand houden.
very awkward to keep distance.
But what we did was that
fundraising events opzetten,
organizing fundraising events,
we hebben zo Green van de

event,
event,
and then the proceeds from that golf tournament
naar de Muco-vereniging,
to the Muco association,
and then they always look for a patient who
de check in ontvangst
the check in receipt
can take, but can also say a word
van, ja, dankjewel, we appreciëren
of, yes, thank you, we appreciate it
dat. Maar ook een stukje
that. But also a piece
parts of what is Muco, why is it important.
En dat gaat dan ook over
And that is also about
mee projecten ondersteunen.
supporting projects.
We hebben nu bijvoorbeeld ook een data
We now also have a data.
project, waar ik een beetje als
project, where I am a little like
patiënt mee nadenk, van hoe kunnen
patient think along, about how we can
we dat opzetten. Dan
we'll set that up. Then
inderdaad het Europese register,
indeed the European register,
waar je de patiëntenstem bent.
where you are the voice of the patients.
Maar door zelf
But due to self
working in pharma, I also noticed
binnen Roche,
within Roche,
we werken heel veel met patiënt-experten samen,
we work a lot with patient experts.
I didn't really know that very well yet.
En dat is inderdaad
And that is indeed
to be able to understand those needs very well
van patiënten. Dus mensen,
from patients. So people,
pharma, maar ook
pharma, but also
medtech, wilt werken aan oplossingen
medtech, wants to work on solutions
voor patiënten, dat is fantastisch.
for patients, that is fantastic.
Maar ze vertrekken best wel van
But they do leave from fairly.
What is a real need of that patient?
En daar kan je als patiënt-expert
And there you can as a patient expert.
ook een heel belangrijke rol spelen.
also play a very important role.
Via je verhaal,
Through your story,
ook al is het maar de N is 1,
even if it is just the N is 1,
je bent uiteindelijk maar één patiënt,
you are ultimately just one patient,
but still, your story can be seen as a kind of
eerste inspiratie
first inspiration
dienen. En
serve. And
kunnen al bepaalde assumpties gemaakt
certain assumptions can already be made
worden door het bedrijf, die dan
become by the company, which then
nadien via een soort vragenlijst,
afterwards through a kind of questionnaire,
bijvoorbeeld bij een grotere groep patiënten,
for example in a larger group of patients,
kunnen afgetutst worden. Dus wat ik
can be tested. So what I
doe nu, is ook inderdaad mijn verhaal
do it now, it really is my story too
delen, met bedrijven,
share, with companies,
met pharma. En daarnaast
with pharma. And in addition
probeer ik ook richting policy
I am also trying to move towards policy.
en awareness, ja, mijn verhaal
and awareness, yes, my story
te brengen, deze podcast.
to bring, this podcast.
You know Tom, I had to think about it for a long time.
Ja, ik heb
Yes, I have.
een paar keer mogen bellen.
to be allowed to call a few times.
Maar het is altijd dat stukje
But it's always that little bit.
patient advocate, dat ik denk van
patient advocate, that I think of
ik vind het fantastisch als mensen
I think it's fantastic when people
de patiëntenstemmen ruimte
the patient voices space
geven. En het feit dat jij me uitnodigt
to give. And the fact that you invite me
als patiënt-expert,
as a patient expert,
ja, hoe kan ik dan
Yes, how can I then?
nee zeggen? Want dat is eigenlijk net hetgene
Say no? Because that is actually exactly the thing.
wat ik hoop, dat het gevolg
what I hope is the result
gaat zijn van deze podcast, hoop ik
is going to be from this podcast, I hope.
oprecht, dat andere patiënten
sincere, that other patients
dit horen, en ook ergens
hearing this, and also somewhere
finding the courage to tell a story.
Want ik geloof heel sterk in dat
Because I strongly believe in that.
collectieve van patiënten. En
collective of patients. And
I have missed that voice from time to time.
Als bijvoorbeeld bij
For example, at
COVID, in het dragen van de mondmaskers,
COVID, in wearing face masks,
had ik het gevoel
I had the feeling
that the voice of that patient was somewhat lacking.
En ik ben dan ook actief binnen
And I am also active within
de patiëntenambassade. Dat is een groep
the patient ambassador. That is a group
patiënten die meewerkt aan het onderwijs
patients who cooperate with education
binnen
inside
de Universiteit Hasselt. Dat is een fantastisch
Hasselt University. That is fantastic.
initiatief met een vijftiental
initiative with about fifteen
patiënten die meedraaien in het
patients who participate in the
onderwijs. En daar hebben we dan ook echt
education. And that's really what we have there
collectief de krachten gebundeld.
collectively combined the forces.
And there we have a kind of press release.
ook geschreven van waarom wij vinden
also written about why we think
als patiënt dat er
as a patient there
een mondmaskerplicht zou moeten komen tijdens
a mandatory mask requirement should be implemented during
COVID, om zo eigenlijk
COVID, just like that
ervoor te zorgen dat ook mensen
to ensure that people as well
met een slechte, minder goede
with a bad, less good
gezondheid wel nog kunnen meedraaien in de
health still being able to participate in the
maatschappij. En dat stukje,
society. And that piece,
I can only hope that more.
patiënten ook gewoon durven
patients just dare as well
een stem te laten
to cast a vote
horen. Hoop ik ook dat bedrijven
hear. I hope that companies also
ook meer en meer die patiënten ook
also more and more those patients too
mee aan tafel zetten.
putting at the table.
En ja, dus
And yes, so
dat stukje van patiëntenstem,
that part of patient voice,
dat probeer ik wel, maar dat blijft
I'm trying, but it remains.
ongemakkelijk, want dat is een stukje
awkward, because that is a piece
van je persoonlijk leven dat je dan
from your personal life that you then
ineens op tafel moet leggen. Ik ben ook
must lay it all on the table. I am also
eigenlijk een introvert,
actually an introvert,
ik zoek ook niet per se aandacht,
I'm not necessarily looking for attention either,
dus dat is constant, zo die balans
so that is constant, that balance
vinden tussen je wat oncomfortabel
find something uncomfortable between you
vinden met dat verhaal
find with that story
to tell, but I can say to everyone
andere patiënten, dat went wel na
other patients, you do get used to that
een tijdje. Je moet dat gewoon doen.
for a while. You just have to do that.
En na een tijd,
And after a while,
denk je daar steeds minder over na,
do you think less and less about it,
because it's still a small thing, you know.
iedere keer, ja, dat
every time, yes, that
persoonlijk verhaal delen.
share personal story.
Is dat iets wat dat
Is that something that
voor jou natuurlijk
for you, of course
comes, I can imagine that is not for
iedereen even makkelijk is, of dat elke
everyone is just as easy, or that each
patiënt dezelfde impact gaat hebben
the patient will have the same impact
als die ergens op een podium kruipt
if it crawls onto a stage somewhere
and explains what is going on
is. Jij kan het heel onderbouwd,
Yes. You can do it very substantiated.
zowel academisch als door ervaring,
both academically and through experience,
kan heel veel context
can provide a lot of context
geven wat dat niet iedereen kan. Is dat ook
giving what not everyone can. Is that also
something you want to share with other patients?
Ja, ik denk dat
Yes, I think that
daar ook die patiëntambassade van de
there also that patient ambassador of the
U Hasselt ook een heel mooi traject
You also have a very nice route in Hasselt.
aan het afleggen is, waar ze enerzijds
is in the process of laying down, where on one hand
patiënten vragen van oké,
patients ask for okay,
jij hebt jouw individuele
you have your individual
patiëntenverhaal, dat is op zich eigenlijk
patient story, that is in itself actually
al heel sterk en heel waardevol,
very strong and very valuable,
but they also think about how we can
jou als individu ook de juiste
you as an individual also the right
tools meegeven om
to provide tools to
dat verhaal nog sterker te maken,
to make that story even stronger,
nog beter te onderbouwen, ook
even better to substantiate, also
de manier waarop je dat verhaal brengt,
the way you tell that story,
want niet iedereen moet professioneel
because not everyone has to be professional
heel veel presenteren of voor groepen
presenting a lot or speaking in front of groups
spreken, dat kan ook heel beangstigend zijn.
Speaking can also be very frightening.
En zowel in de patiëntambassade
And both in the patient embassy
voel ik dat ze echt mensen
I feel that they are really people.
die kansen willen geven,
to give those opportunities,
en daar ook bij ondersteunen, als bij
and also support with that, as with
de patiëntorganisatie, daar zijn ze ook
the patient organization, they are also there
wel constant op zoek, naar patiënten die
always constantly looking for patients who
dat willen doen, en ja,
we want to do that, and yes,
om die mensen ook te ondersteunen,
to support those people as well,
en dat stukje van
and that piece of
collectief, van veel
collective, of many
Voting, and that perhaps shouldn't always be the case.
op een podium zijn, dat kan ook
being on a stage, that is also possible
ergens mee iets ondertekenen, een soort
signing something somewhere, a kind of
verklaring mee,
statement included,
je naam onderzetten, dat kunnen kleine
putting your name down, that can be small
dingen zijn, maar bij de terugbetaling
things are, but with the refund
bijvoorbeeld, dat was ongelooflijk, we zaten
for example, that was incredible, we were sitting
waiting for it for more than five years
terugbetaling, uiteindelijk heeft
refund, ultimately has
de campagne van de
the campaign of the
patiëntorganisatie daar toch wel een
patient organization there certainly is one
doorslaggevende rol gespeeld, en ineens
played a decisive role, and suddenly
zag je enorm veel video's
saw a huge number of videos
van patiënten die normaal
of patients who normally
nooit zouden overwegen
would never consider
om in een video op social
to be in a video on social
media een verhaal te doen,
to tell a story through the media,
ineens was daar toch
all of a sudden, there it was
dat collectief van die mensen die zoiets
that collective of those people who do something like that
hadden van, we moeten hier een
had from, we need to create one here
doorbaak forceren, en dan
forcing a breakthrough, and then
zie je dat toch heel veel patiënten
you see that a lot of patients
wel op de barricades,
well on the barricades,
springen, en een steentje bijdragen,
jumping, and making a small contribution,
en dat het ook impact heeft gehad,
and that it has also had an impact,
en ja, uiteindelijk is de terugbetaling
And yes, eventually the refund is.
er gekomen. Jammer genoeg,
they have arrived. Unfortunately,
soms dat het via media moet gespeeld
sometimes it has to be played out through the media
worden,
become,
but yes, at a certain point you just can't do it any other way anymore,
er sterven mensen,
people are dying,
jonge mensen,
young people,
by the way, dus ja, dan
by the way, so yes, then
ben je geneigd om alle
are you inclined to all
registers open te trekken.
to draw open registers.
Wat zou jouw advies zijn naar
What would your advice be to
organisaties die zeggen, we willen wel
organizations that say, we would like to
de patiënt iets
the patient something
centraler zetten, of meer patiëntgericht
set more centrally, or more patient-oriented
gaan werken, of patiëntparticipatief,
go to work, or patient participation,
of hoe je het ook wilt omschrijven,
or however you want to describe it,
of het nu zorgorganisaties zijn, of bedrijven,
whether they are care organizations or companies,
What advice would you give them to those patients?
te betrekken in het proces?
to involve in the process?
Heel specifiek is natuurlijk uitreiken
Very specifically, it is of course handing out.
naar de patiëntorganisatie,
to the patient organization,
en nog specifieker is het patient expert
and even more specifically, it is the patient expert
center dat we in België hebben, dat
center that we have in Belgium, that
eigenlijk over een aantal
actually about a number
disease areas heen
disease areas beyond
bedrijven en ziekenhuizen
companies and hospitals
probeert te ondersteunen in
tries to support in
het zoeken van de juiste patiënten,
finding the right patients,
de patiëntenstem of de juiste patiënt
the patient's voice or the right patient
expert, ook het Vlaams
expert, also Flemish
patiëntenplatform, en aan de kant van
patient platform, and on the side of
Wallonië heb je een gelijkaardige
In Wallonia, you have a similar one.
organisatie, La Luz.
organization, La Luz.
So there are actually quite a few organizations.
waar je als bedrijf een soort
where as a company you have a kind of
van eerste aanspreekpunt
as the first point of contact
hebt. Maar ik merk ook,
But I also notice,
en dat moet ik eerlijk toegeven,
and I have to admit that honestly,
I am also a kind of patient myself.
consultancybedrijfje begonnen,
started a consultancy business,
omdat je als
because you as
patiënt ook heel wat ervaring opbouwt,
the patient also builds up quite a lot of experience,
en ik merkte, als ik wil samenwerken
and I noticed, when I want to collaborate
met een ziekenhuis, met een verzekeraar,
with a hospital, with an insurer,
met een farmabedrijf,
with a pharmaceutical company,
dan is dat heel moeilijk als gewoon
then that is very difficult as usual
een individu, Valérie.
an individual, Valérie.
Dus bedrijven,
So companies,
opdat ze conform zijn met de
so that they are in accordance with the
regelgeving, moeten ze een factuur hebben,
regulations, they must have an invoice,
moeten ze een bedrijf,
do they have to start a business,
een consultant,
a consultant,
dat zijn de formats wat
those are the formats what
makkelijker maakt om samen te werken.
makes it easier to collaborate.
En het jammeren
And the lamenting
is natuurlijk, via de
is of course, via the
patiëntorganisatie, daar heb je
patient organization, there you have it
professionals die daar in dienst zijn,
professionals who are employed there,
die doen fantastisch werk,
they do fantastic work,
echt waar, daar kan je mee samenwerken,
Really true, you can work with that.
maar er was nog niet echt
but there wasn't really yet
een format ook voor individuele
a format also for individuals
patiënten om je steentje
patients to do your part
to contribute, so at that moment I have
besloten om me te registreren
decided to register
en een soort consultantrol,
and a sort of consulting role,
zodat ik kan samenwerken met
so that I can collaborate with
organisaties, en ik denk dat
organizations, and I think that
daar het Patient Expert Center nu ook
since the Patient Expert Center now also
recent, zij zijn relatief recent opgestart,
recent, they were relatively recently started,
ook een antwoord op probeert
also tries an answer
te bieden, dus zij voorzien ook
to offer, so they also provide
hun contracten, zij helpen
their contracts, they help
eigenlijk echt organisaties
actually real organizations
met contracten op te maken,
to draw up contracts,
met individuele
with individual
patiënten samen te werken,
to collaborate with patients,
via dan de patiëntorganisaties
via then the patient organizations
en het Patient Expert Center
and the Patient Expert Center
zelf, dus zij proberen daar ook wel
self, so they do try there as well
een soort van
a kind of
middelman of zo te zijn
to be a middleman or so
in het connecteren van partijen.
in connecting parties.
En vind je dat er in zorgorganisaties
And do you think that in care organizations
dat de patiënt
that the patient
veel meer een stem moet hebben
must have a much bigger voice
tot zelfs in de
to even in the
governance van de structuur?
governance of the structure?
Heel concrete vraag, vind je dat er
Very concrete question, do you think that there
Should a patient be on the board of directors of a hospital?
Ja.
Yes.
Ik moet ook
I must also.
to say that UC Brussels really does belong there
efforts voor doet. Ik heb een hele leuke relatie
efforts for does. I have a really nice relationship
ook met professor Noppe van
also with Professor Noppe from
UC Brussel. Hij heeft
UC Brussels. He has
me ook wel gevraagd om bijvoorbeeld
also asked me to for example
in een bepaalde, ze zijn
in a certain way, they are
bezig met plannen voor een
busy planning for a
daghospitalisatie en
day hospitalisation and
dergelijke te verbeteren, een dagkliniek,
to improve such, a day clinic,
and there I was also allowed to as a patient
mee nadenken, van
thinking along, from
wat zijn een aantal zaken die vanuit
What are a number of things that come from
patiëntperspectief heel belangrijk zijn om
the patient perspective is very important to
mee te nemen. En ik denk als je
to take along. And I think if you
ja, de vraag is wie zet je
Yes, the question is who do you put in.
daar? Dat is natuurlijk de moeilijkheid
There? That is of course the difficulty.
van Valérie als individuele patiënt.
from Valérie as an individual patient.
Ik weet het niet zeker.
I'm not sure.
Ik denk misschien eerder iemand
I think maybe someone earlier.
vanuit een patiëntenorganisatie, maar dan
from a patient organization, but then
heb je het, welke disease area?
Do you have it, which disease area?
Dus er bestaat nog niet zoiets
So such a thing does not exist yet.
als die holistische patiënt
as the holistic patient
vertegenwoordiger die dan kan
representative who can then
talking on behalf of all the disease areas.
Je hebt het VAMS patiëntenplatform,
You have the VAMS patient platform,
that might already be a good start,
but yes, they are also very often busy
op niveau van het juridische,
at the level of the legal,
hebben iets minder voeling
have slightly less connection
misschien met de disease area specifieke
maybe with the disease area specific
noden, dus het is geen gemakkelijk.
kneads, so it's not easy.
Het is niet gemakkelijk om één persoon,
It is not easy to find one person,
maar het is wel een start. Als die
but it is a start. If that
persoon goed geconnecteerd is,
a person is well-connected,
kan die persoon wel uitreiken naar
Can that person reach out to
de organisaties, kan die wel
the organizations, can that be done?
het debat hebben met de disease specifieke
having the debate with the disease-specific
organizations and can that just be so on that
manier zorgen dat die stem
way to ensure that voice
vertegenwoordigd wordt. En dat is
represented. And that is
a bit like how they have approached it as well
binnen de terugbetalingscommissie
within the reimbursement committee
voor medicatie. Dat is een hele
for medication. That's quite a
mooie realisatie van minister Van den Broeke
Beautiful realization by Minister Van den Broeke.
die ook heel patient-centric
that is also very patient-centric
is. Dat vind ik echt fantastisch.
That's really fantastic, in my opinion.
That has also ensured that within that
terugbetalingscommissie van medicatie
reimbursement committee for medication
dat daar op zijn minst een vertegenwoordiger
that at least a representative there
zit. En het Vlaams
is. And the Flemish
patiëntenplatform en LALUS
patient platform and LALUS
van het Wallonië zijn daar
from Wallonia are there
eigenlijk ook een soort van
actually also a kind of
eerste contactpunt
first point of contact
die mee zetelen, die daar ook tijd
those who sit in as well, those who also spend time there
voor hebben, een professioneel ruimte voor hebben,
to have, to have a professional space
maar die dan kunnen afstemmen met
but then can coordinate with
de disease specifieke organisaties
the disease-specific organizations
voor disease specifieke
for disease specific
dossiers die daar op tafel komen.
files that come to the table there.
Ja, we hebben heel veel
Yes, we have a lot.
zaken aangeraakt.
matters addressed.
Het is al anderhalf
It is already one and a half.
uur dat we aan het praten zijn.
hour that we are talking.
Zijn er zaken waarvan jij
Are there things that you
nog droomt om te realiseren
still dreaming to realize
of het nu op patient empowerment
or it is now about patient empowerment
is, of om technologie, of
is, or about technology, or
datadealing, of
data dealing, or
rond jouw ziekte,
around your illness,
of waar droom jij nog van?
Or what do you still dream of?
Ik denk dat
I think that
many of my dreams have already come true
zijn gegaan. Zelfs dromen die ik
have gone. Even dreams that I
nooit gedroomd heb, zoals een
never dreamed of, like a
tweede kans in het leven krijgen, is
getting a second chance in life is
in vervulling gegaan. Dus
fulfilled. So
mijn grootste doel
my biggest goal
nu is te zorgen dat
now it is to ensure that
No patient is left out in the cold.
En natuurlijk is mijn eerste
And of course, my first is
focus op muco, dat ligt zo dicht
focus on muco, it's so close
bij mijn hart. Uiteindelijk zijn
at my heart. Ultimately, they are
er nog altijd een 10% patiënten
there is still always a 10% of patients
waarvoor geen oplossing
for which there is no solution
is. Dus die medicatie
is. So that medication
die ik nu neem, die dekt
that I am taking now, that covers
niet alle patiënten, niet iedereen komt daar
not all patients, not everyone goes there
voor een aanmerking. Dus
for a remark. So
dat stukje van toegang
that piece of access
tot niet alleen medicatie,
to not only medication,
maar ook wat we besproken hebben,
but also what we discussed,
die sensortechnologie, die apps die er
the sensor technology, the apps that it
voorhanden zijn, die technologie,
to be available, that technology,
daar blijf ik over dromen
I keep dreaming about that.
dat we ergens in België
that we are somewhere in Belgium
wel blijven investeren in gezondheidszorg,
we will continue to invest in healthcare,
maar dat we ook durven
but that we also dare
de systemen te herdenken,
to rethink the systems,
that we dare to think, what if I were that patient now,
en ik moest die factuur betalen,
and I had to pay that invoice,
zou ik het nog wel doen?
Would I still do it?
Wat is waardevol voor mij als patiënt
What is valuable to me as a patient.
en wat is minder waardevol?
and what is less valuable?
Dat is één stukje. En het andere stukje is
That is one piece. And the other piece is
dat bredere stuk van
that wider piece of
een samenleving waar
a society where
je als patiënt ook gelijke kansen
you as a patient also equal opportunities
krijgt. En dat is waarom ik altijd op
gets. And that is why I always rely on
de barricade stond voor rookstop,
the barricade was for stopping smoking,
voor mondmaskerplicht,
for face mask obligation,
voor toegang tot medicatie,
for access to medication,
omdat het blijft
because it stays
moeilijk om als patiënt naar school
difficult to go to school as a patient
te gaan, werk te vinden. Ik heb gewoon
to go, to find work. I just have
lucky to have met the right people
gekomen die mij kansen geven.
come that give me opportunities.
Maar dat is niet voor alle patiënten
But that is not for all patients.
zo.
So. And I think that if you are lucky
gehad, en je hebt een
had, and you have a
opleiding en je bent mondig,
education and you are articulate,
dan is het ook een soort verantwoordelijkheid,
then it is also a kind of responsibility,
I think, to ensure that you do that too.
voor andere patiënten het leven
for other patients the life
beter kan maken. Ik denk
can make better. I think
dat ik al heel blij ben met waar ik tot nu toe
that I am already very happy with where I am so far
geraakt ben. En alles dat
I have been affected. And everything that
extra komt, is gewoon mooi meegenomen.
If there's something extra, that's just a nice bonus.
En hiermee sluiten
