Op 25 januari 2004, ik ben dan 10 jaar, landt Opportunity op Mars.

Maar, nog geen 24 uur later, laat ze weer alles uit handen vallen.

But, not even 24 hours later, she lets everything slip out of her hands again.

Weer een reset.

Another reset.

Steeds vaker moet Opportunity eraan herinnerd worden wie ze is.

Opportunity is increasingly having to be reminded of who she is.

Of wat ze aan het doen was.

Or what she was doing.

Sol 3688, reset-modus.

En dit is ook de eerste keer dat het gebeurt terwijl ze aan het rijden is.

Then restart it and hope for the best.

...verliest ze weer haarzelf uit het oog.

...she loses herself again out of sight.

Amnesia event.

En sol 3786, amnesia event.

Op sol 3791 en 92 kan ze vanwege writing errors niet onthouden wat ze gedaan heeft.

On sols 3791 and 3792, she cannot remember what she has done due to writing errors.

En de dag daarna krijgt ze een amnesia event en een reset op dezelfde dag.

And the day after, she experiences an amnesia event and a reset on the same day.

In de daaropvolgende maand krijgt ze nog vijf amnesia events en twee resets.

Voordat het team besluit om op sol 3866 haar geheugen compleet af te sluiten.

Vanaf dat moment...

...leeft ze alleen nog op haar werkgeheugen.

Een soort korte termijn geheugen.

Waardoor haar iedere ochtend opnieuw verteld moet worden wat ze die dag gaat doen.

Drie maanden rijdt ze zo door.

She drives like this for three months.

Ze maakt foto's van paarsblauwe steentjes zonder te onthouden of ze die eerder gezien heeft.

En dan op 19 maart 2015, terwijl ik op mijn 22ste verjaardag cadeautjes aan het uitpakken ben, pakt zij haar nieuwe software uit.

And then she only wakes up again when the sun shines on her little shield.

Dat gebeurt eigenlijk alleen als ze vastkomt te zitten in een stofwolk.

That only happens when she gets caught in a dust cloud.

Maar Mars is beroemd om zijn stofwolkstormen.

But Mars is famous for its dust storm clouds.

Er waait dan zoveel stof de lucht in dat de zon niet door kan dringen tot het Mars-oppervlak.

So much dust is blown into the air that the sun cannot penetrate to the surface of Mars.

And entire parts of the planet are shrouded in darkness.

Meestal gaat zo'n storm na een paar dagen weer liggen.

Maar heel soms groeit eentje zo groot dat ze de hele planeet omsluit.

But every now and then, one grows so big that it engulfs the entire planet.

En weken of soms zelfs maanden aanhoudt.
