Dit is de vijfde en laatste aflevering in het kader van de jarige KNLTB die dit jaar 125 jaar bestaat.

This is the fifth and final episode in the context of the anniversary KNLTB, which is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year.

We kijken vooruit, waar werkt de tennisbond aan voor de toekomst en we pakken uit.

We look ahead, what is the tennis association working on for the future, and we are making a big deal out of it.

En dat bedoel ik nogal letterlijk.

And I mean that quite literally.

Ja, want voor mij hier ligt het jubileumboek vers van de pers, 150 bladzijden en foto's uit die rijke geschiedenis van de KNLTB.

Yes, because for me here is the anniversary book fresh from the press, 150 pages and photos from the rich history of the KNLTB.

Maar wat is jouw eerste indruk, Jan-Willem?

But what is your first impression, Jan-Willem?

Ja, ik zie vooral een boek dat trots uitstraalt.

Yes, I mainly see a book that radiates pride.

Dat is ook wel op zijn plaats natuurlijk.

That is indeed quite appropriate, of course.

Vooral als je bedenkt wat al die verenigingen, leraren en hand in hand daarmee natuurlijk ook al die vrijwilligers voor elkaar hebben gebokst.

Especially when you consider what all those associations, teachers, and of course all those volunteers have accomplished together.

Mooi feitje, er zijn tegenwoordig meer tennisverenigingen dan Albert Heijn-vestigingen in Nederland, zo heb ik begrepen.

Interesting fact, there are now more tennis clubs than Albert Heijn locations in the Netherlands, as I have understood.

En als je dan bedenkt dat het ooit begon met een vergadering in een koffiehuis waar de contributie werd vastgesteld op één gulden.

And when you consider that it all started with a meeting in a coffee house where the membership fee was set at one guilder.

Zo lees ik in het boek.

Ja, wat ik nou zo heel indrukwekkend vind in die 125 jaar, al die feiten en cijfers.

Want ga maar na, van een handjevol mensen die op die 5 juni 1899 de bond oprichten, hebben we nu gewoon 1600 verenigingen met maar liefst 50.000 vrijwilligers.

Just think about it, from a handful of people who founded the association on June 5, 1899, we now have 1600 associations with no less than 50,000 volunteers.

Nou, van dat aantal keek ik wel heel erg op.

Well, I was very surprised by that number.

We hebben ruim een miljoen tennissers.

We have over a million tennis players.

En daarvan zijn alweer 640.000 leden van een vereniging.

And of that, there are already 640,000 members of an association.

Dus ja, dat zijn duizelingwekkende cijfers.

En dan kan je rustig zeggen, de KLTB is in de Nederlandse sportwereld gewoon een hele grote speler.

Ja, voordat we hierheen verhuisden in 2019 had ik wel heel duidelijk voor ogen hoe ik het kantoor voor me zag.

Yes, before we moved here in 2019, I had a very clear vision of how I saw the office.

Eigenlijk nooit iets met interieur gedaan.

Actually, I've never done anything with interiors.

Maar hier had ik wel heel duidelijk voor ogen wat ik wilde en hoe ik wilde dat het eruit zag.

Vanwege de tegenstelling hoe droefgeestig het oude kantoor was.

Dus nee, het was leuk om daar als jong broekie bij te zijn.

Ruim tien jaar geleden begonnen bij de KNLTB.

Started at the KNLTB over ten years ago.

Erik, flinke professionaliseringslag gemaakt als ik dat mag zeggen.

Erik, you've made significant strides in professionalism, if I may say so.

Financiën op orde, ik wees hier van vijftien naar vijfentwintig miljoen.

Finances in order, I pointed out from fifteen to twenty-five million.

Ik weet niet of dat klopt.

I don't know if that's true.

ICT-landschap veranderd.

ICT landscape changed.

Maar om te beginnen, met welke ambitie begon je bij de KNLTB?

But to begin, with what ambition did you start at the KNLTB?

Met de ambitie om een hele leuke baan te gaan doen, maar niet een tikkie naïef,

With the ambition to have a really fun job, but not a bit naïve,

want ik wist niet helemaal wat ik ging aantreffen.

because I didn't really know what I was going to encounter.

En ik was enthousiast omdat ik op deze manier hobby en werk kon combineren.

And I was excited because I could combine hobby and work this way.

Maar en daarom heb ik ja gezegd op de baan.

But that is why I said yes to the job.

En maar waar ik precies helemaal ja tegen zei, werd me pas erg leuk.

And only later did I find it really nice to understand exactly what I was saying yes to.

Eigenlijk veel later duidelijk, want inhoudelijk wist ik niet heel goed hoe de organisatie ervoor stond en wat.

Actually, much later it became clear, because I didn't really know how the organization was doing and what was going on.

Ja, hoe hoe hoe het eraan toeging.

En dat heeft me ook wel even gekost, want ik kwam uit het wat meer commerciële bedrijfsleven.

And that has also taken me some time, because I came from the more commercial business world.

En dan dan is het wel even omschakelen naar een organisatie die heel veel met vrijwilligers werkt.

And then it is quite a shift to an organization that works a lot with volunteers.

Ja, en dan terug naar die vraag van de ambitie.

Yes, and then back to that question of ambition.

Wat was dan de ambitie die op een gegeven moment begon op te borrelen?

What was the ambition that began to surface at some point?

Nou ja, om de sport die mij enorm nauw aan het hart ligt om die om die verder te helpen en toch een beetje.

Well, to help the sport that is very close to my heart to progress a bit.

Uit de slop te trekken en inderdaad, we hadden begon met een begroting van 14,5 miljoen.

To pull it out of the slump, and indeed, we had started with a budget of 14.5 million.

We zitten nu op een begroting van 25.

We are currently on a budget of 25.

Dat is geen doel op zich, maar het betekent wel dat we 10 miljoen meer in de sport terug kunnen steken dan dan 10 jaar geleden.

That is not a goal in itself, but it does mean that we can reinvest 10 million more in sports than we could 10 years ago.

Dat is natuurlijk mooi.

Leden aantal stond zwaar onder druk destijds.

Membership numbers were under heavy pressure at the time.

Well, we have managed to turn that around pretty well together.

ICT stond volledig onder water was waren het zwarte eentje in in de sport in sportlandschap.

ICT was completely underwater; it was the black one in the sports landscape.

Nou, daar hebben.

Well, there we have it.

Met behulp van heel veel deskundige collega's.

With the help of many expert colleagues.

Hier hebben we dat weet het keer en zijn we nu voorloper op voor heel veel andere tennisbonden in de wereld en voor een aantal sportbonden in Nederland.

Here we have it, we know it turns and we are now a forerunner for many other tennis federations in the world and for a number of sports federations in the Netherlands.

Wat is nou het meest wat mensen tegen jou zeggen?

What is the most common thing people say to you?

Ze weten je bent directeur van de tennisbond.

They know you are the director of the tennis association.

We komen ze klagen of of of is het van alles wat nou de eerste jaren was het met name klagen over ICT dat het niet werkte.

They come to complain whether it's one thing or another; in the first years, it was mainly complaints about ICT not working.

En ja, waarom dit en dat en waarom werkt dat niet?

And yes, why this and that, and why doesn't that work?

En nu is het.

And now it is.

Vaak meer een grapje van over over uitslagen of ratings.

Often more a joke about results or ratings.

En er is nu ja, het gaat ook goed.

Dus er is nu niet zo heel veel meer te vinden wat wat er tegen je gebruikt kan worden.

Wat is de grootste slag die geslagen is in jouw ogen?

De afgelopen jaren bedoel je?

The past few years, you mean?

Nou, ik denk dat de realisatie van het NTC hier dat dat een echt een hele grote stap is geweest.

Well, I think the realization of the NTC here has been a really big step.

We zaten.

We were sitting.

Weliswaar met kantoor dan dus in dat roefgeestige industrieterrein in Amersfoort.

Indeed, with an office then in that shabby industrial area in Amersfoort.

Maar het topsportcentrum stond in Almere.

But the top sports center was located in Almere.

Maar dat had dat was ook niet topsport waardig.

But that wasn't worthy of top-level sports either.

Daar kwam op een gegeven moment ook andere dingen kwamen daar in.

At a certain point, other things also came in there.

Dus het was niet alleen meer een topsport hal.

So it was no longer just a top sports hall.

We moeten nog een heel belangrijk punt gaan benoemen.

We still need to address a very important point.

Dat is namelijk het jubileum.

That is the anniversary.

De term matchmaker komt overal terug.

De KNLTB als verbinder.

Want dat is denk ik die laatste vijf jaar.

Van jouw tienjarige carrière hier heel erg belangrijk geworden in de organisatie.

You have become very important in the organization during your ten-year career here.

Wat is het idee daarachter om daar zo'n nadruk op te leggen?

What is the idea behind placing such emphasis on that?

Ja, onze rol is wel echt veranderd de afgelopen jaren.

Yes, our role has really changed over the past few years.

Wij waren toen ik hier begon tien jaar geleden waren we statutair verantwoordelijk voor verenigingen.

When I started here ten years ago, we were statutorily responsible for associations.

Maar we wilden graag ook met de leden van de vereniging communiceren.

But we also wanted to communicate with the members of the association.

Omdat niet elke vereniging heel makkelijk ook met zijn leden die niet alles wat we aan de vereniging geven.

Because not every association easily connects with its members who do not appreciate everything we provide to the association.

Gaat automatisch naar die leden.

Goes automatically to those members.

Dus we merkten dat leden, daar bleef informatie achter, die kregen niet alles.

So we noticed that members missed out on information, they didn't receive everything.

Dus dat is de eerste keer dat we de statuten hebben aangespast.

So that is the first time we have amended the articles of association.

Dus we hebben gezegd ja we zijn er voor de verenigingen en de leden van de vereniging.

So we said yes, we are there for the associations and the members of the association.

Toen gingen we de sport promoten, tennis promoten.

Then we started to promote the sport, to promote tennis.

Toen kwamen er weer verenigingen die zeiden ja maar je bent er voor ons.

Then associations came again that said yes, but you are there for us.

Nu zeiden we ja maar we proberen door juist de sport te promoten mensen naar de vereniging te trekken.

Now we said yes, but we are trying to promote the sport in order to attract people to the club.

Nou betekende dat we weer de statuten moesten aanpassen.

Well, that meant we had to amend the articles of association again.

We zijn er voor de sport tennis.

We are there for the sport of tennis.

Toen kwam Padel, moesten we weer de statuten aanpassen.

Then Padel came along, and we had to amend the articles of association again.

Want we zijn er nu niet alleen maar voor tennis, maar we zijn er ook voor Padel.

Because we are not only here for tennis, but we are also here for Padel.

Padel werd ter tijde van de fusie voor 95% van de gevallen bij een tennisvereniging gespeeld.

Padel was, at the time of the merger, played at a tennis club in 95% of cases.

Dat is inmiddels ergens tussen de 50 en 60% nog.

That is now somewhere between 50 and 60% still.

Die andere resterende percentages worden bij wat meer commerciële centra gespeeld.

The other remaining percentages are played at some more commercial centers.

We hebben in die statuten staan dat verenigingen zich kunnen aansluiten.

We have in those statutes that associations can join.

Maar hoe zit het dan met die commerciële centra?

But what about those commercial centers?

Voor de vierde keer de statuten aangepast.

Amended the statutes for the fourth time.

We zijn er niet alleen voor verenigingen, maar ook voor commerciële centra.

We are not only here for associations, but also for commercial centers.

Dus dat speelveld is enorm aan het veranderen.

So that playing field is changing enormously.

Wij zien onszelf nu veel meer als een verbinder tussen al die partijen in dat speelveld.

We now see ourselves much more as a connector between all those parties in that playing field.

En ik denk dat dat ook de rol is die een bond zou moeten nemen.

And I believe that is also the role a union should take.

Veel minder dit moet je doen en dat moet je doen.

Much less of this you have to do and that you have to do.

Nee, partijen samenbrengen en zorgen dat daar het maximale uit wordt gehaald.

No, bringing parties together and ensuring that the maximum is achieved from that.

En die verbinder, dat matchmaker inderdaad, dat komt daar heel erg in terug.

De core business blijft natuurlijk ook het wedstrijden en de competities organiseren.

The core business remains of course organizing the matches and competitions.

Ik meen dat er 35.000 competities worden georganiseerd in Nederland.

I believe that 35,000 competitions are organized in the Netherlands.

35.000 teams hebben wij.

We have 35,000 teams.

Dus dat is wel onvoorstelbaar veel.

So that is quite unimaginable a lot.

Ik denk ook een van de grootste in Europa.

I think also one of the largest in Europe.

Sterk nog, we zijn de grootste centraal georganiseerde tenniscompetitie ter wereld.

In fact, we are the largest centrally organized tennis competition in the world.

Tot slot Erik, heel veel wedstrijden ook bezocht natuurlijk.

Finally Erik, of course, you've attended a lot of matches as well.

Bij menige Davis Cup de welgezien, Billie Jean King Cup, de vetcup in het verleden.

In many Davis Cups, the well-known Billie Jean King Cup, the veterans' cup in the past.

Zijn er nog momenten waarvan je zegt, nou als ik nu terugkijk, toch heel mooi dat ik daarbij was?

Daar heb ik voor het eerst echt gezien hoe groot Federer is.

That was where I truly saw how great Federer is for the first time.

Als die binnenkomt en wat er dan met een perszaal of met een zaal met supporters of zelfs met ons eigen team gebeurt.

When that comes in and what happens then with a press room or with a room full of supporters or even with our own team.

Dat was wel immens.

That was immense.

Ik was in de gelukkige omstandigheid dat hij ging een handje geven.

I was in the fortunate circumstance that he came to shake hands.

Hebben we ook een hele mooie Davis Cup in Kietspiel tegen Oostenrijk, tegen Dominique Thiem gehad die we wonnen.

Timo speelde daar waanzinnig goed.

Voor ons is het belangrijk in ons geval dat elke tennisser en padeller op redelijke afstand een tennis- of padelbaan binnen of buiten kan vinden.

For us, it is important in our case that every tennis player and padel player can find a tennis or padel court within a reasonable distance, whether indoors or outdoors.

Nou, dat is niet altijd het geval.

En het tweede is betaalbaarheid van sport.

Voor ons is het belangrijk dat iedereen tegen een faire prijs kan sporten.
