We zitten in een bijzondere tijd, natuurlijk de oorlog in Palestina en ook de resultaten, de tegenvallende resultaten van de verkiezingen.

We are in a special time, of course the war in Palestine and also the disappointing results of the elections.

Imam Azzedine, u heeft het vandaag over onze rol als moslims gehad. Hoe moeten wij eigenlijk tegen deze gebeurtenissen aankijken?

Imam Azzedine, you spoke today about our role as Muslims. How should we actually view these events?

Bismillah, wassalatu wassalamu ala rasoolillahi wa ala alaikum.

In the name of Allah, blessings and peace be upon the Messenger of Allah and upon you.

Dank voor deze belangrijke vraag. Vandaag tijdens de preek heb ik daar ook aandacht aan besteed.

Thank you for this important question. Today during the sermon I also addressed that.

Om nog specifieker te zijn, ik heb over het concept burgerschap gesproken, niet vanuit een maatschappelijk juridisch.

To be even more specific, I spoke about the concept of citizenship, not from a social legal perspective.

Perspectief, maar meer vanuit een religieus perspectief, want wanneer je het woord burgerschap hoort, klinkt als een onderwijskundige of een onderwijsachtige, politiekachtige term.

Perspective, but more from a religious perspective, because when you hear the word citizenship, it sounds like an educational or a political term.

Dat in essentie een belangrijk onderdeel is van de manier waarop wij het leven doorbrengen.

That is essentially an important part of the way we spend our lives.

En in de preek heb ik ook gerefereerd naar haar eerste grondwet, die de profeet salallahu isalam heeft opgesteld.

And in the sermon, I also referred to her first constitution that the Prophet, peace be upon him, established.

En daarin spreekt hij bijvoorbeeld over een gemeenschap, over een samenleving.

And in that he talks about a community, about a society.

En hij refereert daarbij naar zowel moslims als anders gelovigen.

And he refers to both Muslims and other believers.

Dus burgerschap is een belangrijk onderdeel van ons geloof.

So citizenship is an important part of our faith.

Zeker in deze tijd waarin wij te maken krijgen met bepaalde uitdagingen, is het ontzettend belangrijk om die rol juist in vervulling te brengen.

Especially in these times when we are faced with certain challenges, it is incredibly important to fulfill that role correctly.

Dat we ook in actie gaan komen om de schade te beperken.

That we will also take action to limit the damage.

Om voor vrijheden en rechten die wij als moslims hebben, als minderheden, maar ook als mensen hebben.

To advocate for the freedoms and rights that we have as Muslims, as minorities, but also as humans.

Daarvoor gaan strijden.

To fight for that.

Dat we nu de eenheid gaan vormen om samen met anderen op te komen voor de vrijheden die helaas, en dat zeg ik met pijn in mijn hart, niet meer vanzelfsprekend zijn.

That we are now going to form a unity to stand up together with others for the freedoms that, unfortunately, and I say this with a heavy heart, are no longer taken for granted.

Dus wat doe je als moslim?

So what do you do as a Muslim?

Zou ik meer eerder moeten beantwoorden met wat doe je niet als moslim?

Should I rather respond with what do you not do as a Muslim?

Wat je sowieso niet moet doen.

What you definitely shouldn't do.

Dat je geketend gaat blijven.

That you will remain chained.

Dat je enkel en alleen in het slachtoffervolk gaat kruipen en zegt van het is klaar met ons.

That you will only crawl into the victimhood and say that it's over for us.

We kunnen niks meer doen.

We can't do anything more.

De ander heeft in die zin gewonnen en dat je dus een passieve houding gaat nemen.

The other has won in that sense, and that you will take a passive attitude.

Wat ik vandaag heb geprobeerd te doen is dat ik mensen en mezelf in de eerste instantie bewust maak van het feit dat we hoe dan ook een bepaalde verantwoordelijkheid zouden moeten dragen.

What I tried to do today is make people and myself aware of the fact that we should bear a certain responsibility in any case.

En dat wij een actieve rol zouden moeten spelen.

And that we should play an active role.

Niet dat je dat doet voor Jantje of Pietje, maar dat je dat puur en alleen omwille van Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala doet.

Not that you do it for Jantje or Pietje, but that you do it purely and solely for the sake of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.

Dat je dus als een burger, als mens, als gelovige extra verantwoordelijkheden gaat dragen.

That you, as a citizen, as a human being, as a believer, will take on extra responsibilities.

Extra je best gaat doen, het maximale uit jouw leven gaat halen om die taak en die rol die Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala voor ons heeft gewild, om die op een goede manier te vervullen.

You are going to do your best, get the maximum out of your life to fulfill the task and role that Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala has wanted for us, in a good way.

Dus zeker niet geketend blijven.

So definitely not stay chained.

Sterker nog, we moeten nu een actieve houding gaan aannemen en uiterst ons best doen als individuen, als gezinnen, als families, als gemeenschappen, als samenleving.

Moreover, we need to take an active stance now and do our utmost as individuals, as households, as families, as communities, as a society.

Om het onrecht te bestrijden, waar dan ook in de wereld en zeker hier in het land waarin wij leven.

To combat injustice, anywhere in the world and certainly here in the country where we live.

Ja.

Yes.

U had een aantal punten genoemd die we kunnen gebruiken voor goede participatie in de samenleving, dus goed burgerschap.

You mentioned a number of points that we can use for good participation in society, so good citizenship.

Welke punten zijn dat?

Which points are those?

Wat ik heb geprobeerd te doen is in ieder geval de termen die heel vaak cliché klinken niet te gebruiken, omdat ik het ook niet eens ben met die benadering.

What I have tried to do is at least not to use terms that often sound cliché, because I do not agree with that approach either.

Termen zoals integratie, emigratie of assimilatie.

Terms such as integration, emigration, or assimilation.

Die termen golden inderdaad voor een groep.

Those terms indeed applied to a group.

Die in de jaren zestig, zeventig, tachtig naar Nederland is gekomen.

Who came to the Netherlands in the sixties, seventies, and eighties.

Maar voor de huidige generaties, tweede, derde en zelfs vierde generatie is dat niet meer van toepassing.

But for the current generations, second, third, and even fourth generation, that no longer applies.

Wij leven hier in Nederland, wij zijn een onderdeel van de Nederlandse samenleving.

We live here in the Netherlands, we are a part of Dutch society.

Dat is een feit, dat kan niemand meer ontwijken, negeren of ontkennen.

That is a fact that no one can avoid, ignore, or deny anymore.

Dat is een realiteit.

That is a reality.

Daar heb ik niet over de culturele aspecten hiervan.

I did not address the cultural aspects of this.

Natuurlijk heb je je roots ergens anders, maar dat geldt voor iedereen.

Of course you have your roots somewhere else, but that applies to everyone.

Zelfs voor wilders heeft Indonesische roots.

Even for Wilders, there are Indonesian roots.

Dus.

So.

Maar wat er waartoe?

But what for?

Wat er waartoe gaat, is dat we nu samen de samenleving vormen.

What is happening is that we are now shaping society together.

We zijn allemaal burgers van dit land en wij zouden ook als burgers ons moeten gedragen.

We are all citizens of this country, and we should also behave as citizens.

En wat ik dus heb geprobeerd te doen, is een aantal belangrijke fundamenten die voor ons als moslims heel belangrijk zijn.

And what I have tried to do is establish some important foundations that are very important for us as Muslims.

Dat we daar rekening mee moeten houden, dat we dat niet uit het oog moeten verliezen.

That we need to take that into account, that we must not lose sight of that.

En één daarvan, misschien zelfs het belangrijkste daarvan is islam, is je geloof.

And one of those, perhaps even the most important, is Islam, your faith.

Burgerschap houdt niet in dat jij je geloof aan de kant moet zetten.

Citizenship does not mean that you have to set aside your beliefs.

Succes in deze samenleving betekent niet dat jij je compromis moet sluiten, dat je je hoofddoek af moet doen.

Success in this society does not mean that you have to make compromises, that you have to take off your headscarf.

Dat jij, wanneer je ergens bij een multinational werkt, dat jij je geloof niet meer gaat praktiseren.

That when you work for a multinational, you stop practicing your faith.

Dat je je mee gaat borrelen en alcohol gaat drinken.

That you're going to join for drinks and have some alcohol.

Ik zeg altijd, geloof is geen jasje die je aan en uit doet.

I always say, faith is not a jacket that you put on and take off.

Geloof is een onderdeel van jouw bestaan.

Faith is a part of your existence.

Dus je zou overal en altijd jouw islam moeten meenemen.

So you should carry your Islam everywhere and at all times.

Je moet je niet altijd als, in die zin, de focus daarop leggen van ik ben moslim, dit.

You shouldn't always focus on the fact that I am Muslim, this.

Nee.

No.

Je gedraagt je als mens.

You are behaving like a human.

Met bepaalde principes.

With certain principles.

Met bepaalde grenzen.

With certain boundaries.

Met bepaalde kaders.

With certain frameworks.

Dat is het eerste.

That is the first.

Tweede punt waar ik ook op heb gefocust is samenleven met anderen.

The second point I have also focused on is living together with others.

We moeten realiseren en beseffen dat we niet alleen zijn.

We must realize and understand that we are not alone.

Sterker nog, wij vormen met anderen een groter geheel.

Furthermore, we form a greater whole with others.

We hebben soms gemeenschappelijke belangen, maar we hebben ook meningsverschillen.

We sometimes have common interests, but we also have differences of opinion.

We denken anders over bepaalde kwesties.

We think differently about certain issues.

En binnen die kaders, binnen die context, zul jij je eigen ideeën moeten beschermen.

And within those frameworks, within that context, you will have to protect your own ideas.

Moeten verdedigen.

Must defend.

Binnen de kaders van de wet.

Within the frameworks of the law.

Ik vind het wel belangrijk om het te herhalen.

I do find it important to repeat it.

Binnen de kaders van de wet.

Within the framework of the law.

En dat wij, sterker nog, die stap gaan overstijgen.

And that we, moreover, will surpass that step.

En een actieve bijdrage gaan leveren aan de samenleving waarin wij leven.

And make an active contribution to the society in which we live.

Ik vertrok vanuit een Koranische vers waarin Allah zegt.

I started from a Quranic verse in which Allah says.

O mensen, we hebben jullie van man en vrouw tot volk en aan stammen gemaakt.

O people, we have made you from man and woman into nations and tribes.

Omdat jullie elkaar leren kennen.

Because you are getting to know each other.

Leren kennen houdt in samenwerken.

Getting to know each other involves working together.

Leren kennen houdt in bij elkaars zorgen delen.

Getting to know each other means sharing each other's concerns.

Leren kennen betekent voor elkaar opkomen.

Getting to know each other means standing up for one another.

Leren kennen betekent ook daadwerkelijk iets gezamenlijk gaan realiseren.

Getting to know each other also means actually achieving something together.

Zeker nu.

Certainly now.

Omdat u rechts gewonnen heeft.

Because you won on the right.

En de meerderheid weet te vormen in de Kamer.

And the majority is able to form in the Chamber.

Is het ontzettend belangrijk om ook met anderen op te trekken.

It is extremely important to also connect with others.

Met anderen die dezelfde idealen delen.

With others who share the same ideals.

Misschien ander geloof.

Maybe another faith.

Misschien andere principes.

Maybe other principles.

Misschien andere filosofie of ideologie.

Maybe another philosophy or ideology.

Maar dat wij wel gezamenlijk gaan kijken naar wat ons verbindt.

But we will look together at what connects us.

Dat we daarop gaan focussen.

That we are going to focus on that.

En dat betekent ook, dat vond ik een hele belangrijke punt.

And that also means, I found that a very important point.

Dat betekent ook dat wij gaan reflecteren op ons gedrag.

That also means that we will reflect on our behavior.

Naar onszelf toe.

Towards ourselves.

Naar elkaar toe.

Towards each other.

Ik zeg altijd.

I always say.

Hoe jij je gedraagt in de auto.

How you behave in the car.

Hoe jij je gedraagt op straat.

How you behave on the street.

Hoe jij je gedraagt in je portiek.

How you behave in your porch.

Met je buren.

With your neighbors.

Op school.

At school.

Op werk.

At work.

Op universiteit.

At university.

Overal waar je bent.

Wherever you are.

Is een stempel die je achterlaat.

It's a stamp that you leave behind.

Met name wanneer jij dat als moslim doet.

Especially when you do that as a Muslim.

Wanneer je Ahmad en Mohammed heet.

When you are named Ahmad and Mohammed.

Dan is dat nog duidelijker.

Then that is even clearer.

Wanneer je een hoofddoek draagt.

When you wear a headscarf.

Dan is dat nog duidelijker.

Then that is even clearer.

Jouw gedrag telt zeker mee.

Your behavior definitely matters.

En ik denk dat 90% van degenen die op de PVV hebben gestemd.

And I think that 90% of those who voted for the PVV.

Dat vooral doen.

Just do that especially.

Vanuit onwetendheid.

Out of ignorance.

Vanuit vooroordelen die ze hebben over moslims.

From the prejudices they have about Muslims.

Over islam.

About Islam.

En soms dragen we daar helaas zelf aan bij.

And sometimes we unfortunately contribute to that ourselves.

Soms geven we ook helaas het slechte voorbeeld.

Sometimes we unfortunately also set a bad example.

In de moslimgemeenschap zou er geen dief moeten zijn.

There should be no thief in the Muslim community.

Ik zeg niet dat dat het geval is.

I'm not saying that is the case.

Nee zeker niet.

No, certainly not.

We hebben heel veel mooie voorbeelden.

We have a lot of beautiful examples.

Voorbeeldfiguren die ontzettend veel goeds doen.

Role models who do an incredible amount of good.

Maar we hebben helaas ook rotte appels in ons midden.

But unfortunately, we also have bad apples among us.

Die het voor anderen verpesten.

Those who spoil it for others.

En dat is waar we op moeten focussen.

And that's what we need to focus on.

Dat we dat geen verfijnen.

That we don't refine that.

Dat we als gemeenschap gaan openmaken.

That we as a community are going to open up.

Dat we de meningsverschillen aan de kant gaan zetten.

That we are going to put aside the differences of opinion.

Om te focussen op iets wat heel belangrijk is.

To focus on something that is very important.

Op de zaken die ons verbinden.

To the matters that connect us.

En een van de laatste.

And one of the last.

Van de punten die ik ook heb opgezond.

Of the points that I have also listed.

Of fundamenten waar we aan moeten vasthouden.

Or foundations that we must hold on to.

Is dat wij dat moeten doen vanuit een bepaalde verantwoordelijkheid.

That we have to do this from a certain responsibility.

Je bent hier op aarde gezet.

You have been placed here on Earth.

Met bepaalde verantwoordelijkheden.

With certain responsibilities.

Het is niet alleen zo dat jij hier op aarde bent gezet om te eten en te drinken.

You are not only here on Earth to eat and drink.

En voort te planten.

And to reproduce.

Nee.

No.

Je hebt een rol van Allah.

You have a role from Allah.

Zozeer gekregen.

Gotten so much.

Je bent een mens.

You are a human.

Je hebt een taak.

You have a task.

Je hebt een da'wah.

You have a da'wah.

Activiteit.

Activity.

Draag erbij.

Contribute.

Help stichtingen die daarmee bezig zijn.

Help organizations that are working on it.

Jouw moskee.

Your mosque.

Jouw imam.

Your imam.

Probeer het dialoog aan te gaan.

Try to engage in dialogue.

Probeer het gesprek aan te gaan.

Try to engage in the conversation.

Probeer het maximale uit de kansen te halen die Allah heeft gegeven.

Try to make the most of the opportunities that Allah has given.

En dat moet te zien zijn in opvoeding.

And that should be evident in upbringing.

In werk.

At work.

In studie.

In study.

Probeer het maximale te bereiken.

Try to achieve the maximum.

Niet voor jezelf.

Not for yourself.

Maar voor je gemeenschap.

But for your community.

En primair voor Allah .

And primarily for Allah.

Dus ja, mooie punten heeft u aangehaald.

So yes, you have raised some good points.

Ja, als moslims moeten we ons dus excelleren in eerste instantie dus voor Allah .

Yes, as Muslims, we should excel primarily for Allah.

Maar daarnaast is het ook gewoon een goed visitekaartje voor de rest van de samenleving.

But besides that, it is also simply a good business card for the rest of society.

Als mensen om zich heen kijken en denken van ja, moslim, wat voor associaties heb ik daarmee?

When people look around them and think, yes, Muslim, what associations do I have with that?

Een associatie hebben met een persoon die heel wat heeft bereikt.

To have an association with a person who has achieved a lot.

Een gemeenschap waar alles goed gaat.

A community where everything is going well.

Dat dat toch ook een da'wah is voor de rest van de gemeenschappen in Nederland.

That that is also a da'wah for the rest of the communities in the Netherlands.

Heeft u nog een laatste boodschap voor luisteraars?

Do you have a last message for listeners?

Laatste boodschap is dat wij ons, dat we soms even een moment moeten nemen om te reflecteren op ons eigen handelen.

The final message is that we sometimes need to take a moment to reflect on our own actions.

Dat zou ik moeten doen.

I should do that.

Dat zou jij moeten doen.

You should do that.

Dat zou iedere individu van onze gemeenschap moeten doen.

Every individual in our community should do that.

Wat is mijn bijdrage?

What is my contribution?

Wat kan ik doen?

What can I do?

Welke stappen zou ik kunnen ondernemen om een onderdeel te zijn van de oplossing?

What steps could I take to be part of the solution?

Om beeldvorming van islam en moslims in Nederland te verbeteren.

To improve the image of Islam and Muslims in the Netherlands.

Om bij te dragen aan vrede in de samenleving.

To contribute to peace in society.

Maar ook daarbuiten.

But also beyond that.

Ook in Gaza.

Also in Gaza.

Jij als individu hebt ontzettend veel kansen.

You as an individual have many opportunities.

Veel mogelijkheden die we absoluut niet mogen onderschatten.

Many opportunities that we absolutely must not underestimate.

Op welke manier dan ook.

In any way.

En als wij daarop reflecteren en vanuit die kracht vertrekken.

And if we reflect on that and start from that strength.

En niet vanuit slachtofferrol.

And not from a victim role.

Dat we die kracht gaan inzetten om het maximaal uit ons leven te halen.

That we are going to use that strength to get the most out of our lives.

Dan denk ik dat wij als gemeenschap hele mooie stappen vooruit kunnen zetten.

Then I think that as a community we can take some really nice steps forward.

En vooral afstand nemen van al die online discussies.

And especially distancing oneself from all those online discussions.

Die mensen onderling verrichten.

Perform among those people.

En elkaar uitsluiten.

And excluding each other.

En basis van meningsverschillen.

And based on differences of opinion.

Daar moeten we nu afstand van nemen.

We need to distance ourselves from that now.

En als eenheid gaan opereren.

And operate as a unit.

Dus juist de prioriteiten stellen.

So just setting the priorities.

Absoluut.

Absolutely.
