Zij waren helemaal fan van iemand en die heette de Self Help Hipster. Die heb ik toen gegoogeld en dat bleek iemand te zijn uit Nederland. En die bleek ook gewoon in het Nederlands te twitteren en heel grappig te zijn.

They were huge fans of someone named the Self Help Hipster. So I googled him and it turned out to be someone from the Netherlands. And it turned out he also tweets in Dutch and is very funny.

En zo ben ik ooit op Lianne uitgekomen. Maar goed, misschien Lianne kun je jezelf even voorstellen.

And that’s how I eventually came across Lianne. Well, Lianne, maybe you can introduce yourself.

Ja. Ik wil zo meteen met je hebben over de boeken van Lien Bardugo en specifiek Help Band. Maar eerst ben ik benieuwd wat voor lezer jij bent. Waarom lees jij?

Yes. I want to talk to you shortly about the books of Lien Bardugo and specifically Help Band. But first, I'm curious about what kind of reader you are. Why do you read?

Ik denk dat lezen al sinds ik klein ben mijn hyperfocus is. Dat is gewoon hetgeen waar ik gewoon altijd, dat vind ik altijd fijn om te doen. Als kind verslond ik al boeken. Nu ik ouder ben is dat tempo, dat weet je al, dat varieert een beetje afhankelijk van wat er natuurlijk gaande is in je leven.

I think reading has been my hyperfocus since I was little. That's just something I always enjoy doing. As a child, I devoured books. Now that I'm older, that pace, as you know, varies a bit depending on what is happening in your life.

Maar ik ben een voordat ik ga slapen lezer. Dus eigenlijk lig ik altijd in mijn Kindle-app, in mijn Kindle-app, s'avonds voordat ik ga slapen.

But I am a reader before I go to sleep. So I actually always lie in my Kindle app, in my Kindle app, in the evenings before I go to sleep.

En dan val ik ook best wel makkelijk in slaap. Meestal helpt dat ook heel erg. Ik lees ook, als ik een boek echt heel goed vind, lees ik ook overdag of in het OV. Maar met name s'avonds en in bad. Ik vind een bad lezen ook heerlijk.

And then I also fall asleep quite easily. Usually, that helps a lot. I also read; if I really like a book, I read during the day or on public transport. But especially in the evening and in the bath. I also find reading in the bath delightful.

En dan ook op de Kindle-app?

Ook op de Kindle-app, ook wel op fysieke boeken. Maar inmiddels durf ik het mezelf toe te staan om een technologisch apparaat mee te nemen naar de badkamer. Want ik heb zo'n soort plank waar alle situaties opgezet kunnen worden.

Also on the Kindle app, as well as on physical books. But by now I dare to allow myself to take a technological device into the bathroom. Because I have a kind of shelf where all situations can be set up.

Dus ook in bad lees ik op mijn Kindle-app.

So I also read on my Kindle app while in the bath.

En lees je dan vooral fictie of ook non-fictie?

And do you mainly read fiction or also non-fiction?

Ik lees de laatste jaren vooral heel veel fictie. Vooral heel veel young adult. Gewoon lekker chillen, maar wel hele interessante en gevarieerde verhalen.

In recent years, I mainly read a lot of fiction. Especially a lot of young adult. Just relaxing, but with very interesting and varied stories.

Non-fictie vind ik ook heel leuk. Maar dat gaat bij mij wat meer in fases. Terwijl ik ben altijd wel in een fictieboek bezig.

I also really enjoy non-fiction. But that comes in phases for me. Whereas I am always involved in a fiction book.

En niet specifiek altijd ook nog in een non-fictie?

And not specifically always in a non-fiction?

Nee, eigenlijk niet.

No, not really.

Nee, dan moet ik echt een boek hebben waar ik mijn zinnen op heb gezet, zeg maar.

No, then I really need a book that I have my mind set on, so to speak.

Vind ik leuk, want je hebt wel drie, drie inmiddels, non-fictieboeken op je naam staan.

I like it because you have three, three by now, non-fiction books to your name.

Klopt, ja.

Ik vind het leuk dat dat dan zo werkt.

I like that it works that way.

Ja, sinds 2018 is er elke twee jaar een boek van mij uitgekomen.

En ja, dat zijn een beetje grappige en een beetje relais, ook niet te pretentieuze zelfhulpboeken.

Die eigenlijk met name gaan over hoe je dingen kan doen die je wil.

Maar ook een beetje ontspannen kan blijven.

Want ja, het leven is al... Je kan het leven heel stressvol maken.

En dat hoeft wat mij betreft nou ook weer niet. Dus dat probeer ik in mijn boeken een beetje uit te dragen.

And that, as far as I'm concerned, isn't necessary either. So I try to convey that a bit in my books.

Je bent echt een extreem nuchtere cheerleader, zeg maar.

En kunnen we dan ook nog van jou een fictieboek verwachten?

Daar hoop ik wel ten zeerste op. Ik heb daar echt wel ambities ook liggen.

I really hope so. I truly have ambitions in that area as well.

Omdat young adult vind ik gewoon zo onwijs vet. En daar wil ik echt wel eens een keer een gooi naar doen.

Because I just think young adult is really cool. And I really want to give it a try sometime.

En ik heb wel wat ideetjes op de backburner ook wel liggen.

And I have some ideas on the back burner as well.

Maar ik ben nog niet... Ik merk dat fictie is gewoon ook weer zo'n andere tak van sport.

But I am not yet... I realize that fiction is just another ball game altogether.

Want non-fictie is toch heel erg veel makkelijker vanuit jezelf.

Because non-fiction is much easier to express from oneself.

En dat is toch een ander soort verhaal wat je levendig moet krijgen dan een fictieboek.

And that is indeed a different kind of story that you need to bring to life than a fiction book.

En in de creatief schrijvencursus die ik geef, waarbij ik opdrachten nakijk.

And in the creative writing course that I teach, where I review assignments.

En die opdrachten variëren echt van songteksten tot columns, maar ook tot korte verhalen.

And those assignments really vary from song lyrics to columns, but also to short stories.

En dan merk je gewoon... Ik heb bijvoorbeeld vandaag echt een superleuk verhaal gelezen.

And then you just notice... For example, today I really read a super fun story.

Waarvan ik echt dacht, oh, dit concept is echt super, super vet.

Of which I really thought, oh, this concept is truly super, super cool.

Maar dat was zo in zijn algemeenheid gehouden dat het gewoon...

But that was kept so generally that it just...

It didn't lift up off the page, weet je wel. En dat heeft het echt wel nodig.

It didn't come off the page, you know. And it really needs that.

Dus ja, ik denk dat ik daar ook wel behoorlijk veel eisend richting mezelf in zal zijn.

So yes, I think I will be quite demanding of myself in that regard as well.

docent creatief schrijven te worden? Hoe word je dat?

How do you become a creative writing teacher?

Daar ben ik voor benaderd door het NTI.

I was approached for that by the NTI.

Daar werkte een oud-middelbare schoolvriendinnetje van mij.

There worked an old high school friend of mine.

En nou ja, die moest aan mij denken toen ze daarmee bezig waren.

And well, she had to think of me when they were busy with that.

En toen heb ik die cursus ontwikkeld op basis van Writing Down the Bones van Natalie Goldberg.

And then I developed that course based on Writing Down the Bones by Natalie Goldberg.

Dat is het grote boek op het gebied van creatief schrijven.

That is the big book on the subject of creative writing.

Uiteraard is het Nederlandse versie schrijven vanuit je hart.

Of course, writing the Dutch version comes from the heart.

En het boek Zin van Geertje Kouwenberg.

And the book Meaning by Geertje Kouwenberg.

Geertje Kouwenberg is ook een hele grote naam in Nederland en België...

Geertje Kouwenberg is also a very big name in the Netherlands and Belgium...

als het gaat over creatief schrijven.

En ik heb eigenlijk een soort lesprogramma toen ontwikkeld...

And I actually developed a sort of lesson program then...

rondom die twee boeken en de inhoud daarvan.

En dat doe ik sinds 2016, doe ik dat nu alweer.

And I've been doing that since 2016, I've been doing it again now.

En dat betekent dat af en toe dan krijg ik een bloep, bloep, zo van...

je moet even iets nakijken en dan mag ik dus een tussentijds...

En ja, het creatief schrijven, het gaat ook echt wel om iemands eigen proces.

And yes, creative writing is really about someone's own process.

Dus ik ga niet als een soort dictator door zo'n stuk heen lopen.

So I'm not going to walk through a piece like some kind of dictator.

Of een redacteur.

Or an editor.

Redacteur, maar ik ben wel altijd heel eerlijk.

Editor, but I am always very honest.

En ik zeg wel altijd, zeg maar, ik geef ook...

And I always say, you know, I also give...

ik probeer zowel op het gebied van taal wel echt goed te onderwijzen.

I am really trying to teach well in the field of language.

Dus inderdaad uitleggen waarom bepaalde dingen zo werken.

So indeed explaining why certain things work the way they do.

Ik verwijs ze ook altijd door naar links, weet je wel...

I always direct them to the left, you know...

met daarin de informatie van, ja, waarom werkt een dialoog schrijven zo?

Wat betekenen al die verschillende interpunctietekens nou eigenlijk?

Dus gebruik je die wel goed? Gebruik je ze überhaupt?

Dus wat betreft het zintuigelijke en meer in je eigen leven staan.

So I always try to focus a bit on the two processes...

Of lekker? Dat mag ook.

Or tasty? That’s fine too.

Nou, als het lekker leest...

Well, if it reads nicely...

Ja, wat is dat dan? Dat iets lekker leest?

Yes, what is that then? That something reads well?

Kijk, en daarin zullen smaken natuurlijk altijd een beetje verschillen.

Look, and tastes will always differ a bit in that regard.

Maar goed, we zullen er straks opkomen waarom ik deze boeken dus zo onwijs fantastisch vind.

Well, we will get to why I find these books so incredibly fantastic shortly.

Ik hou ervan als iemand een beetje een eigen stijl heeft.

I love it when someone has a bit of their own style.

Dus je doet het echt niet allemaal specifiek op één manier.

So you really don't do it all in a specific way.

Maar je moet er een bepaalde stijl en flow in hebben.

But you need to have a certain style and flow in it.

Waarbij het echt dus inderdaad gewoon...

Where it really is just...

dat er een goed ritme in zit.

that there is a good rhythm in it.

Dat er een beetje een geintje in kan zitten.

That there might be a bit of a joke in it.

Dat het mooi tot de verbeelding spreekt.

That it beautifully stimulates the imagination.

En dat je dingen voelt.

And that you feel things.

Dus dat je voelt als iemand iets doms doet.

So that you feel like someone is doing something stupid.

Verdorie, waarom doe je dat nou?

Darn it, why are you doing that?

En als je voelt dat iemand iets slims gaat doen.

And if you feel that someone is going to do something clever.

Dat je excited bent voor de hoofdpersoon.

That you are excited for the main character.

Of voor het welk personage dan ook die dat gaat doen.

Or for whichever character is going to do that.

Er moet iets gebeuren.

Something needs to happen.

En dat vind ik zo magisch dus aan schrijven.

And that's what I find so magical about writing.

Er moet iets gebeuren dat je als lezer mee wil.

Something has to happen that makes you want to join as a reader.

En als dat zo is, dan heb je mij eigenlijk al.

And if that's the case, then you actually already have me.

Dus ik ben niet een super kritische lezer, denk ik.

So I don't think I'm a super critical reader.

Maar ik ben wel...

But I am...

Als je me niet meekrijgt, dan laat ik het boek ook echt liggen.

If you can't get me on board, then I will really leave the book behind.

Dan stop ik ook gewoon met lezen.

Then I'll just stop reading too.

En dan is het helaas...

And then unfortunately...

Dan is de liefde over.

Then love is over.

Ja, knap vind ik dat.
