De lachband werkt alvast.
The laugh track is working already.
This podcast is a production of the Multisport Federation Sportyvac.
Geïnspireerd? Goed, let's go!
Inspired? Good, let's go!
Let's go! Inderdaad, Sportycast, aflevering 16.
Let's go! Indeed, Sportycast, episode 16.
And for that, we have invited another very interesting guest with us.
Welkom, Emmanuel van Luchenen.
Welcome, Emmanuel van Luchenen.
Ja, dankjewel Gilles. Dankjewel voor de uitnodiging.
Yes, thank you Gilles. Thank you for the invitation.
Met veel plezier. Emmanuel, een zwemmer. Ik ga het meteen prijsgeven.
With great pleasure. Emmanuel, a swimmer. I will reveal it right away.
We haven't had the guest on our Sportycast yet.
Dus heel blij dat we jou mogen ontvangen.
So very glad that we get to welcome you.
You could have told us all about that quite beautiful and very demanding sport.
Toch ook wel, denk ik, maakstellen.
Still, I think, they do create a framework.
Ja, dat is inderdaad.
Yes, that is indeed.
I am glad that I... It is actually an honor to be here.
Dus dankjewel voor de uitnodiging.
So thank you for the invitation.
De eer is volledig voor ons.
The honor is completely ours.
Emmanuel, jouw actieve carrière ligt nu een paar jaar achter jou.
Emmanuel, your active career is now a few years behind you.
I will try to summarize more or less what you have accomplished.
Of toch de belangrijkste zaken.
Or at least the most important matters.
Of belangrijkste, ja. Misschien voor de buitenwereld.
Or most importantly, yes. Maybe for the outside world.
Misschien kijk je er zelf anders tegenaan. Dat kan natuurlijk.
Maybe you view it differently yourself. That is of course possible.
Dus vul mij gerust aan of corrigeer mij gerust straks.
So feel free to add to me or correct me later.
I believe you have held five Belgian records.
So you naturally have two Olympic appearances to your name.
Twee Olympische finales zelfs met de estafetteploeg.
Two Olympic finals even with the relay team.
Ja, klopt.
Yes, that's right.
En een drievoudige bronzenmedaille op Europese kampioenschappen.
And a triple bronze medal at the European Championships.
Zowel in korte baan als lange baan.
Both in short track and long track.
That has actually changed a bit in the meantime.
Due to a doping scandal, it has become a silver medal.
Ah, kijk. Dat is altijd een dubbel in.
Ah, look. That's always a double in.
Als een Russisch...
If a Russian...
That is a Russian relief team that was involved in it.
In Berlijn 2014, als ik me niet vergis.
In Berlin 2014, if I’m not mistaken.
Op de Europese kampioenschappen.
At the European Championships.
So we only won a silver medal there.
Maar ja.
But yes.
Fysiek hebben we nog altijd een bronzenmedaille.
Physically, we still have a bronze medal.
Dus die wordt niet ingeruld.
So that will not be filled in.
Die wordt niet ingeruld?
Is that not being filled in?
Nee, nee, nee.
No, no, no.
But sometimes you do hear that, that they are still being filled?
Yes, indeed. I think that is certainly the case with Olympic medals.
As it was in 2008, I think, in athletics.
Ja, klopt.
Yes, that's right.
Maar nee.
But no.
Bij ons, zeker op Europese of wereldkampioenschappen,
With us, especially at European or World Championships,
That still remains silver or bronze, actually.
At the World Championships, we moved from fifth to fourth place.
Maar dan blijkt het ook...
But then it turns out that...
It's not like there is a medal at stake there.
Nee, nee.
No, no.
Inderdaad.
Indeed.
Ja, alleen al twee Olympische finales.
Yes, just two Olympic finals.
That alone, how many can say that?
That is certainly something to be incredibly proud of.
Ik heb nu een paar dingen opgesomd.
I have listed a few things now.
Maar misschien heb je nog andere dingen.
But maybe you have other things.
You say, you still forget this or that.
I am particularly proud of that as well.
Because it has been a very long career, anyway.
Hoe blik je terug op jouw zwemcarrière?
How do you look back on your swimming career?
Dat is eigenlijk...
That is actually...
Ik zwem al vanaf mijn vijf jaar.
I have been swimming since I was five years old.
Vier, vijf jaar.
Four, five years.
Dan begon ik...
Then I began...
First in Waregem, I thought that was the third kindergarten.
Then they started trying to teach me the breaststroke legs and breaststroke arms.
Ik wou dat niet doen.
I didn't want to do that.
Dat ging mij niet, die schoolslagbenen.
That didn't work for me, those frog legs.
Ik begon hondjeslag te doen.
I started to do dog fighting.
I also got there on the other side.
So I had my own way of swimming.
Then in my first year as a teacher, I went to the swimming club Ter Bord Mulebeke.
Daar heb ik twaalf jaar gezwommen.
I swam there for twelve years.
Twaalf of dertien jaar.
Twelve or thirteen years.
Heel recreatief.
Very recreational.
Met een leuke bende.
With a fun bunch.
That was under the leadership of Bart van den Moortel.
Hij was daar hoofdtrainer.
He was the head coach there.
And then gradually to a slightly higher level.
Dat was dan ook meerdere trainingsuren.
That was multiple training hours.
In the bath, everything next to the bath, became more and more a lifestyle.
Hoe oud was je toen?
How old were you then?
Vijftien?
Fifteen?
Vijftien, zestien jaar.
Fifteen, sixteen years.
I became Belgian champion for the first time when I was thirteen years old.
With three or four training sessions a week.
Meanwhile, other swimmers, especially in the elite sports school, had around seven or eight swimming training sessions.
So the talent was already there then.
Talent is not made, you are born with it.
And I felt an enormous freedom in swimming.
Dus ik kon helemaal mezelf zijn.
So I could be totally myself.
I could do whatever I wanted, in every strike.
And I also knew that it would be great if you could turn your hobby into a job.
So my dream was really to swim at an Olympic Games or a very large international competition someday.
That's not necessarily required to have been Olympic Games.
And then that is actually a framing of people that you get involved with.
Where they are also a bit sport-minded, who share the vision of achieving the very highest level.
En dat doe je dan samen.
And you do that together.
So we have embarked on a journey.
Since I was seventeen, I have been part of Gold Swimming Team.
So that was actually it, there were five clubs together.
Ja.
Yes.
Dat was dan kortreeks.
That was a short series.
Wevegem, Menen, Mullebeke, and Ypres were five clubs that came together to actually reach an international level.
Ja.
Yes.
And then we really learned that, yes swimming, it is an individual sport, but you also do it as a team.
So I am incredibly grateful for those people, those swimmers next to me, my training partners as coaches, as parents, as everyone there.
So without them, it would have never succeeded.
To take that step to an international level.
Ja.
Yes.
And that was of course in the fifth year of secondary school, I was here at Sint-Theresia in Kortrijk, now the Rizo.
Ja.
Yes.
And there were morning trainings, waking up at five, training at six, and being at school all day.
I was at the gym, so that often meant two or four hours a day of gymnastics, athletics, and other ball sports.
So that was a bit difficult for me as well, but I just really enjoyed it.
I was, I was born with ADHD, so I had that energy, yes, I had that energy, so I had to use it somewhere.
And then, yes, go swimming again for two hours, so that was a very busy day.
In the evening, maybe study a little more, or finish a task on the bus or something like that.
And then actually, since I was eighteen years old, after I graduated from high school, I went to Antwerp.
And that was actually a process in Antwerp.
To go to the London Games with the relay.
And then that was a four-year journey, where was that, back then in Wachtenbeke, Puienbroek.
And there I was, yes, I actually spent four years in Ghent, at Artevelde University College, until Rio.
And then I actually tried to go to Tokyo, but made different choices instead.
Heel mooi overzicht al.
Very nice overview already.
Ik ga eventjes terugpikken, maar heel goed.
I'm just going to pick it back up, but very well.
So in fact, the moment that you, let's say, win your first Belgian title, is at the age of thirteen.
Then the ball starts rolling a bit more, you might, I must say, perhaps be discovered.
You will be discovered within your club, which then gives you the chance to train with the goldswimming team.
And so the moment that you are actually in high school.
At the age of fifteen, sixteen, you say, I'm in the gym there.
But St. Teresa, not everyone is going to know that, it's not a top sports school, it's an ordinary sports school.
Is that common? Someone with your talent at that moment for sure?
So you’re actually in a regular gym, where you also practice all kinds of sports in addition to swimming?
Or would most of them really already be in a high-performance sports trajectory at that moment?
Puur zwemmen?
Pure swimming?
I think there are very few who can make that combination.
I think that a lot depends on the years before.
Hoe je als kind bent, je motoriek.
How you are as a child, your motor skills.
I think there would be a lot of people who would actually get more injuries by doing other sports.
But that actually makes me stronger.
Ja.
Yes.
So I actually already, just before I started high school, played football every day, played basketball, did gymnastics, and jumped on a trampoline.
I did everything there so that when I was in high school or came to it, it would be very easy to pick up other sports as well.
So the resilience was very high there, but I could handle all that.
It revolved around sports and I just noticed that I could be myself here.
So the swimming was almost 18 to 20 hours per week.
And additionally another 10 hours or until 12 hours of sports.
Ja, ik was 30 uur bezig.
Yes, I was busy for 30 hours.
Zelfs nog meer met sporten.
Even more with sports.
But that was also a relaxation and a challenge for me.
So I felt, yes, I felt free.
Ik moest hier niet per se altijd.
I didn't have to be here all the time.
Ja.
Yes.
Het allerbeste uitgaan.
The very best going out.
But that was just like, okay, I enjoy doing that and can keep doing it for the rest of my life.
Hopelijk dan toch.
Hopefully then.
Actually, those 10 to 12 hours of additional sports on top of your swimming.
Zoals je zegt, dat was meer ongedwongen.
As you said, that was more spontaneous.
Maar je was wel aan het sporten.
But you were exercising.
Je zette andere spieren in beweging.
You activated different muscles.
So in a certain way that will have helped you with swimming as well.
Ja, absoluut.
Yes, absolutely.
Dus inderdaad.
So indeed.
Sowieso had ik heel weinig blessures toen.
Anyway, I had very few injuries back then.
Ik kon tegen alles ook.
I could handle everything as well.
Yes, once you reach a level at 17, 18 years old, you will start with strength training, stabilization.
Are you also going to have certain coordination exercises and such?
And I did notice that I had quite a significant advantage over other age groups there.
Ook op basis van de topsport school.
Also based on the top sports school.
Ik had toch wel ergens getwijfeld.
I did have some doubts somewhere.
At 16 years old, I wouldn't go to sports school now.
Omdat het toch wel heel lastig werd.
Because it was getting really tricky.
But I'm still glad that I didn't do it after all.
That I still see that back in those days, a lot of swimmers had dropped out after the sports school.
Dus in die tijd waren ze goed.
So at that time they were good.
But once they turned 18, they would lower themselves to their level and were usually mostly burned out.
Dus dat wil ik voorkomen.
So I want to prevent that.
So that way I chose the gym.
In combination with the swimming that was the direction of competitive sports.
I hadn't done it yet in high school.
Maar het ging de richting op.
But it was going in that direction.
And when I see what I am now, doing top sports at the age of 14 or 15.
Then you notice, it's not the right time for such a young age there.
Die kinderen, dat zijn echt nog kinderen.
Those kids, they are really still children.
That they set the bar so high there.
But then at a certain moment you noticed that there are both physical and mental complaints.
Then you have to fix all of that again.
And that takes a very long time again.
Een individueel herstel is niet evident.
An individual recovery is not evident.
Boeiend.
Fascinating.
And you then really end up in that team, as you say.
Omkadering.
Framing.
Zwemmen lijkt een heel individuele sport.
Swimming seems like a very individual sport.
Maar niets is minder waar.
But nothing could be further from the truth.
You really need that team around you then.
Ja.
Yes.
Dus inderdaad.
So indeed.
Zoals een diëtist, mental coach.
Like a dietitian, mental coach.
But especially a trainer who is always there.
And at that time, starting from when I was 16 years old.
Was there a coach who came my way?
Wouter Drijke.
Wouter Drijke.
That made me very aware of what I was doing.
Dat was het bewust maken.
That was the awareness-raising.
He didn't impose too many things on us.
Maar.
But.
He made sure that each individual could develop themselves.
At the maximum that he or she can achieve.
Ja.
Yes.
En dat vond ik heel goed.
And I thought that was very good.
Door het team rondom mij.
By the team around me.
Ben ik ook geworden daardoor.
I have also become that because of it.
Waar ik nu sta.
Where I stand now.
And also the achievements that I have attained.
But that has all gone through a process.
Precies alsof dat het gisteren was.
Just like it was yesterday.
Ja.
Yes.
It's been a long time since I talked about that again.
But you do brighten up when you talk about it.
Ja.
Yes.
Fantastische tijd ook.
Fantastic time as well.
Echt een fantastische tijd.
Really a fantastic time.
Is it possible to take out your most beautiful memory from there?
Om eentje te selecteren?
To select one?
Of een paar?
Or a couple?
Goh.
Wow.
Ehm.
Um.
Ik denk.
I think.
Ik was nog in het.
I was still in it.
Ik zat in het zesde middelbaar.
I was in the sixth form.
And I had sung the time limit for the European Championship.
Een klein bad.
A small bath.
En dat was een eerste senior wedstrijd.
And that was a first senior match.
In Eindhoven.
In Eindhoven.
And we say that there the switch was made from a junior to a senior.
En daar behalen we finale plaats.
And there we achieve a final place.
Met Pieter Timmers.
With Pieter Timmers.
Met Jasper Arends.
With Jasper Arends.
I and I think that was François Heersbrand back then.
En dat was een fantastische tijd toen.
And that was a fantastic time back then.
Maar dat was vooral.
But that was primarily.
Due to many sacrifices during that time.
Ik heb 50 dagen moeten missen.
I have had to miss 50 days.
Ik heb een ski stage moeten missen.
I had to miss a ski internship.
Ik heb heel wat uitstappen moeten missen.
I have had to miss quite a few outings.
En ja.
And yes.
Dat is natuurlijk heel jammer.
That is of course very unfortunate.
Zeker als jonge gast.
Certainly as a young guy.
16, 17 jaar.
16, 17 years old.
Ja.
Yes.
De vrijdagavond.
Friday evening.
We gaan naar het straatje.
We are going to the alley.
We gaan daarheen gaan drinken.
We are going there to drink.
Ah.
Ah.
Man.
Man.
Nu komt de zomer.
Now summer is coming.
Ja.
Yes.
en is dat zo belangrijk
and is that so important
ja, eigenlijk wel
Yes, actually.
en niet veel mensen
and not many people
konden dat precies begrijpen
could understand that exactly
en voelden je je wel vaak
And did you often feel that?
eenzaam in die wereld
lonely in that world
dus daarom is je team daarin rond
so that is why your team is involved in it
very important, and that was that switch too
van, je vrienden
from, your friends
zijn, tot op een bepaalde leeftijd
to be, up to a certain age
kiezen ze daar wel echt voor
Do they really choose that?
but once you do top sports, no more
je vrienden zijn eigenlijk
your friends are actually
degene waar je eigenlijk rond hangt
the one you actually hang around with
at that moment also participating in top sports
en
and
Yes, you should have done it with that.
either you stay in that club, or you leave
to another club, so that is also a bit of
hoe voel je jezelf in die groep
How do you feel about yourself in that group?
en welke functie
and which function
heb je juist, ben jij de leider
Are you right, are you the leader?
de volger, had jij
the follower, did you have
ja, dus dat is een heel dynamische
Yes, so that is a very dynamic.
manier van aanpakken
approach
naar elkaar toe
towards each other
en je bent
and you are
but the weakest link of the group or something
that is the level of the group, of course, so
je probeert elkaar ook te
you also try to
motiveren om van, oké
motivate to, okay
I know that people are now going to the alley.
gaan de vrijdagavond
going on Friday evening
maar hou, kom, we gaan toch gaan trainen
But come on, we're going to train anyway.
en we doen dat samen
and we do that together
en er was ook een persoon
and there was also a person
die dat ook bij mij in de klas zat
who also sat in my class
in het vijfde middelbaar, in het zesde middelbaar
in the fifth year of secondary school, in the sixth year of secondary school
Jens De Rijke
Jens De Rijke
He is going to be very pleased that I mention his name.
en ja
and yes
die heeft mij ook gewoon heel hard
that just hit me really hard
gemotiveerd en blijven stimuleren
motivated and continue to stimulate
we hebben dat samen gedaan
we did that together
hij heeft mij enorm naar boven getrokken
he has pulled me up tremendously
op mentaal als fysiek vlak ook
on both a mental and physical level as well
dat was mijn broski
that was my broski
so they went along with me to train
en die kikte daarop
and that chirped about it
dus ja, dat is belangrijk
so yes, that is important
ja, dat is echt belangrijk
Yes, that is really important.
that you have such people around you
en je omringt met de personen die
and you surround yourself with the people who
ja, die begrijpen waarmee je bezig bent
Yes, they understand what you are doing.
and that allow you to do those things
And yes, you have to be able to resist temptations.
dat is
that is
zoals Kipchoge zou zeggen
as Kipchoge would say
vitamin N
vitamin N
ja
yes
the power to say no
the power to say no
ah ja
oh yes
ja, ja, ja
yes, yes, yes
een hele belangrijke vitamine
a very important vitamin
ja, ja
yes, yes
and certainly not obvious at a young age, I think
dat heeft mij wel sterk gemaakt
that has made me strong
al moet ik wel zeggen dat ik
I do have to say that I
ook de persoon ben die
also the person I am
die afwisseling wel nodig heeft
that variation does need
to go along a second time after all
als het kan
if possible
het is wel van die topsporters
it is indeed of those top athletes
die echt in die
that really in the
tunnel zitten en daar niet willen uitgaan
sitting in the tunnel and not wanting to get out of there
ja
yes
ik kon pas in die tunnel zitten
I could only sit in that tunnel.
if I also had my space beside that
om mezelf te zijn
to be myself
en te ontplooien door
and to develop by
andere energieën die binnenkomen
other energies that come in
van andere mensen
from other people
en dat weerspiegelt mezelf
and that reflects myself
van waar ik nu sta
from where I am now
zoals toen ook op dat moment
just like then at that moment
je hebt mensen die
you have people who
die in het uitgaans milieu zitten
those who are in the nightlife scene
op dat moment
at that moment
ja, ik heb dat af en toe
Yes, I have that from time to time.
misschien wel een keer nodig gehad
might have needed it at some point
dat mensen of
that people or
die momenten van
those moments of
allé man u
Come on, man.
zullen dat wel doen
they will certainly do that
en ik zeg ja
and I say yes
ik heb dat nodig
I need that.
om te weerspiegelen van oké
to reflect okay
nu heb ik dat nodig
now I need that
om te weten van waar ik nu sta
to know where I currently stand
waar zeg ik nee tegen
What am I saying no to?
waar zeg ik ja tegen
What am I saying yes to?
ja, dus dat is wel een heel
Yes, so that's quite a
een belangrijke
an important
leerproces geweest voor mezelf
learning process for myself
ja, inderdaad
yes, indeed
het vraagt heel veel zelfkennis
It requires a lot of self-knowledge.
om dat zo op die manier ook in te zien
to see it that way as well
ja
yes
oké
okay
ja
yes
dat blijft toch zoiets
that still remains something like that
iets mythisch
something mythical
ik ga er nog eens
I'm going there again.
naar terugverwezen
referred back
Rio
Rio
2016
2016
Londen
London
2012
2012
ja
yes
je was daar
you were there
finale gezwommen
final swum
met het team
with the team
en was het in
and was it in
in Rio zit je dan ook
Then you're also in Rio.
in de callroom
in the call room
met Michael Phelps
with Michael Phelps
bijvoorbeeld
for example
je bent dan op dat moment
you are at that moment
24
24
ja
yes
23 of 24
23 of 24
ja
yes
23 jaar
23 years
ja
yes
, ja
, yes
en dan zit je in dezelfde ruimte
and then you are in the same room
met misschien wel
with perhaps
ik weet het niet
I don't know.
misschien de allergrootste zwemmer
perhaps the greatest swimmer
aller tijden
all time
Michael Phelps
Michael Phelps
23 houden
23 to keep
olympische medailles
Olympic medals
wat doet dat met u
What does that do to you?
op zo'n moment
at such a moment
op de Spelen in Rio
at the Games in Rio
was niet de eerste keer
was not the first time
dat ik Michael Phelps zag
that I saw Michael Phelps
ik had het jaar voordien
I had it the year before.
een Arena Grand Prix gezongen
a sung Arena Grand Prix
in Amerika
in America
dat was een
that was a
twee maand stage
two months internship
samen met de wedstrijd
together with the match
met Rick Valdez
with Rick Valdez
en Wouter de Rijcke
and Wouter de Rijcke
met nog een paar andere zwemmers erbij
with a few other swimmers added in
Louis Kroenen onder andere
Louis Kroenen among others
en daarom zwom ik naast hem
and that is why I swam next to him.
een 200 meter wisselslag
a 200 meter individual medley
I swam a 100 freestyle next to him as well.
dus ik kende hem al een klein
so I already knew him a little
allee
avenue
Of course I know him in the way of an athlete.
maar had ik ook tegen hem gesproken
but I had also spoken to him
en
and
was dat gewoon iemand die enorm
was that just someone who was enormous
ja
yes
passioneerd is
passionate is
en bezig is met zijn sport
and is busy with his sport
eh
eh
een klein beetje zo die arrogantie
a little bit like that arrogance
but I also find that fun with top athletes
die zo
that so
ja
yes
een callroom moeder
a callroom mother
dat wel een klein beetje hebben
that does have a little bit
ik heb daar wel van geleerd
I have learned from that.
je feliciteerde mij ook
you also congratulated me
na de wedstrijd ook toen
after the match also then
I have won against it myself in the series.
op de 100 meter vrije slag
in the 100 meter freestyle
but in the final he did command me
ja oké
yes okay
ik kan toch zeggen
I can still say.
ik heb wel sneller gezongen
I have sung faster.
dan de Michael Phelps
than Michael Phelps
de grootste Olympiër aller tijden eigenlijk
the greatest Olympian of all time actually
zelfs
even
maar toch
but still
blijven fantastische mensen
stay fantastic people
en dan in de finale
and then in the final
was dat in Rio
was that in Rio
geen verrassing meer om hem te zien
no surprise anymore to see him
maar hij was wel heel gefocust
but he was very focused
op zichzelf
in itself
met een koptelefoon aan
with headphones on
en hij spuugde wel
and he did spit
de hele callroom rond
the entire callroom around
het was precies alsof hij
it was exactly as if he
iets wou doen daarmee
wanted to do something with it
mensen keken naar hem natuurlijk
People were of course looking at him.
ja dat zal wel
yes, that will do.
maar
but
op dat moment
at that moment
ben je bezig met jezelf
Are you working on yourself?
Are you actually competing against yourself?
visualiseren
visualize
de rust te bewaren
to maintain the calm
en eigenlijk je eigen team eigenlijk
and actually your own team actually
aan het oppeppen
cheering up
en motiveren
and motivate
en kom gasten
and come guests
het is een moment
it is a moment
we hebben daarvoor getraind
we have trained for that
met team
with team
is het anders dan al individueel
Is it different than individually?
dus je staat daar als team Belgium
so you stand there as team Belgium
we waren als
we were like
ik dacht zevende door
I thought seventh through.
en we zijn als zesde geëindigd
and we finished in sixth place
and that was indeed a very good performance.
in Londen
in London
in Londen waren we achtste
In London, we came eighth.
maar waren we ook het allerjongste team
but we were also the youngest team
van allemaal
of all
ik was ook de kleinste
I was also the smallest.
ik ben een meter 79
I am one meter seventy-nine.
en de gemiddelde lengte daar
and the average length there
is een meter 92
is one meter 92
dus mocht ik mezelf wel bewijzen
So I should prove myself after all.
op een manier ofzo
in a way or something
dat was een ervaring
that was an experience
de Spelen van Londen
the London Games
eerste keer ooit
first time ever
ook met een estafette team
also with a relay team
een finale behaald
reached a final
wat dat wel een hele eer was
that was indeed a great honor
and then you should also say that it is a very good achievement
en dan kwam er een 4-jaren plan
and then a 4-year plan came along
Okay, we have now reached a top 8.
but how are we going to win a medal now
dus dat was echt richting
so that was really direction
een medaille
a medal
maar dan moesten we Amerika, Rusland
but then we had to [go to] America, Russia
Australië
Australia
Frankrijk inderdaad
France indeed
en zeker Frankrijk-Amerika
and certainly France-America
dat was altijd te straight
that was always too straight
op de 4x100 vrije slag
in the 4x100 freestyle
dan moesten wij als derde
then we had to go third
dan probeerden we eigenlijk van
then we actually tried to
oké maar we willen niet derde worden
Okay, but we don't want to come in third.
of tweede of eerste maar...
or second or first but...
dat is een proces
that is a process
en we moesten onszelf overstijgen
and we had to transcend ourselves
alles moest kloppen
everything had to be right
dat was een droom
that was a dream
en dat jaar van de Spelen zelf
and that year of the Games themselves
ja
yes
beseften we maar al te goed
we realize all too well
van oké top 5
from okay top 5
is het meest
is the most
of hoogst haalbare
or highest attainable
maar we hebben allemaal wel
but we all do have
onze mankementen gehad
had our shortcomings
vanaf 2015
from 2015
zowel Dieter de Konink
both Dieter de Konink
zowel Pieter, zowel ik
both Pieter and I
als bijna iedereen
if almost everyone
en ja
and yes
we hebben niet veel overschot in België
we don't have much surplus in Belgium
dus Amerika heeft heel veel andere zwemmers
So America has a lot of other swimmers.
een grote visvijver
a large fish pond
dus zij kunnen nog andere zwemmers
so they can still see other swimmers
oprakelen van ja kijk
digging up yes look
hij valt af
he is losing weight
dus hij komt in de plaats
so he comes in the place
en dat scheelt maar 1 tiende
and that's only a difference of 1 tenth
terwijl van ons, wij zitten met 5
while of us, we are sitting with 5
goede zwemmers, maar
good swimmers, but
the sixth swimmer is already half a second
tot bijna seconderaar
to almost secondary
so it will already become very difficult in that regard
maar we hebben
but we have
I believe we just have a fantastic memory.
daar hebben
to have there
en goede prestaties
and good performance
neergezet hebben ook
have also been set down
the best we could actually do
finale plaats, olympische spelen
final position, Olympic Games
in een sport als zwemmen
in a sport like swimming
die zo'n grote sport is
that is such a big sport
ja
yes
en inderdaad
and indeed
dat was het doel ook
that was the goal too
is dat fitte, terug in de finale
is that fit, back in the final
en misschien zelfs medaille of top 5
and maybe even a medal or top 5
maar dan zijn er altijd struggles
but then there are always struggles
2015
2015
het jaar voor de spelen
the year before the games
was er dus die stage in Amerika
So there was that internship in America.
met Phelps
with Phelps
en dan kwam ik met een chronische
and then I came up with a chronic
darmziekte naar huis
intestinal disease at home
colitis ulcerosa
ulcerative colitis
a bit comparable to Crohn's disease
dikke darmontsteking
colitis
en
and
heel zwaar afgezien daarvan
suffered a lot from that
tot 2 weken
up to 2 weeks
2 weken heb ik
I have 2 weeks.
7 of 8 kilo afgevallen
Lost 7 out of 8 kilos.
alleen maar bloed
only blood
dus dat was een enorme
so that was a huge
mentale ontgoocheling voor mezelf
mental disappointment for myself
ik stond heel scherp
I was very sharp.
heel goed
very good
ik was echt mee met de top
I was really in sync with the top.
ik was nog nooit zo goed geweest
I had never been this good before.
en dan in een keer is dat zo van
and then all of a sudden it's like
een knik
a kink
and then you end up in the hospital
hier in AZ Groeningen bij dokter Verhouwen
here in AZ Groeningen at doctor Verhouwen
specialist
specialist
en hij zegt van kijk
and he says look
het zal heel moeilijk worden om
it will be very difficult to
de Spelen van Rio te zwemmen
to swim in the Rio Games
van daarvoor
from before
and we will see what the medication has.
voor normale mensen kan dat goed aanslaan
for normal people, that can resonate well
bij andere mensen niet
not with other people
so you are very dependent on that medication
en dan voel je je niet meer
and then you no longer feel
topsporter, maar patiënt
top athlete, but patient
en het is
and it is
dat was voor mij een enorme
that was a huge
mindset van
mindset of
oké, hoe moet ik hier mezelf weer terug
Okay, how do I get myself back here again?
opkrikken van patiënt naar
lifting the patient to
topsport
top sports
and then I was in connection with the world championships
in Kazan in Rusland
in Kazan in Russia
en daar kwamen we ons plaatsen
and there we took our places
voor de Spelen van Rio
for the Rio Games
2015 inderdaad
Indeed 2015
en in Kazan zelf
and in Kazan itself
waren we dan 9e geworden
did we then become 9th
we moesten een top 12 halen
we had to make a top 12
om rechtstreeks gekwalificeerd te zijn
to be directly qualified
voor de Spelen van Rio
for the Rio Games
dat hebben we toen gehaald
we achieved that back then
dus ik was ook mee
so I was also there
in het verhaal van Rio
in the story of Rio
ondanks dat ik ook al
despite the fact that I already
een ziekte had toen
a disease had then
maar ik werd er wel van hersteld
but I did recover from it.
en dan van oké, nu gaan we
and then from okay, now we're going
inzetten op die 200 meter wisselslag
focus on that 200 meter individual medley
individueel
individual
omdat ik daar toch ook wel
because I do feel that way too
misschien zelfs een halve finale
maybe even a semi-final
eventueel finale kon behalen
possibly reaching the final
en dan was er een wedstrijd
and then there was a match
de Vlaamse kampioenschappen in Antwerpen
the Flemish championships in Antwerp
in februari 2016, het jaar van de Spelen
in February 2016, the year of the Games
en haal ik
and I get
de limiettijd met 4 honderdsten
the time limit by 4 hundredths
dus dat was een van mijn
so that was one of my
mooiste momenten, heel mijn
most beautiful moments, my whole
zwemcarrière, individuele selectie
swimming career, individual selection
voor de Spelen
before the Games
want ik had zo vaak van ja, mag ik
because I had so often said yes, may I
wel mee met de aflossing, maar individueel
Yes, with the repayment, but individually.
dat is nog altijd iets specialer
that is still something more special
en dan
and then
was het eigenlijk gewoon trainen, trainen
Was it actually just training, training?
trainen tot de Spelen van Rio
training for the Rio Games
maar dan twee maanden ervoor
but then two months before it
terug een opstoot, terug een dikke
back an outbreak, back a thick
darmontsteking
intestinal inflammation
terug zoveel kilo's afgevallen
back to losing so many kilos
weer cortisone, klein beetje
again cortisone, a little bit
cortisone voor terug weer
cortisone for back again
sneller te herstellen
to recover faster
en dan op een bepaald moment
and then at a certain moment
ja, cortisone afzitten
Yes, coming off cortisone.
probeerde eigenlijk
actually tried
everything you have inside you or something, tried that too
in te zetten op training
to invest in training
en de trainingen gingen echt niet goed
and the training sessions really did not go well
So that was about whether I would participate in Rio or not.
dat was een maand voor de Spelen
that was a month before the Games
was ik hier met
Was I here with
dokter Zwanepoel
Doctor Zwanepoel
Reiniel Zwanepoel nog aan het bespreken van
Reiniel Zwanepoel is still discussing.
Will I make it or will I not make it?
ehm
uhm
en dan, ja
and then, yes
You might be better off going, maybe for that repayment.
doe het dan voor die aflossing
do it for that repayment then
dat gaat misschien niet de
that might not be the
topprestatie zijn van je leven, maar
it's the top performance of your life, but
doe het voor het team, Belgium
do it for the team, Belgium
en ja, dan heb ik
and yes, then I have
toch geprobeerd er alles
still tried everything
aan te doen, gezond te leven
to do, to live healthily
echt zo, ja als
really so, yes if
een pater, te leven van
a priest, to live from
goed te slapen, eten
sleep well, eat
drinken, en ook wel
drinking, and also
to laugh, because that is also a good medicine
dat niet
that not
vergeten, genieten van de dingen
forgetting, enjoying the things
die er zijn, en
that are there, and
ja, ik heb wel wat struggles
Yes, I have some struggles.
gehad onderweg, maar uiteindelijk
had along the way, but ultimately
ja, toch mijn beste prestatie neergezet op
Yes, still my best performance put in on.
de 100 en de 200 vrije slag
the 100 and the 200 freestyle
ehm, in de aflossing
uhm, in the repayment
en individueel was het
and individually it was
half a second slower than my best time
ehm
uhm
that I sang in February, but yes
dat neem je erbij, en
you take that into account, and
I can't say that I didn't do my best.
nee, absoluut
no, absolutely not
geen evident parcours
no clear path
ehm
uhm
ik zei het al in de intro, je hebt 5
I already said it in the intro, you have 5.
Belgische records op jouw naam gehad
Belgian records held in your name.
waarvan nu nog
of which still now
wel, ik heb op een bepaald moment
well, at a certain moment I have
7 gehad, 7 zelfs, ja
7 had, 7 even, yes
op alle rugnummers, behalve op 1
on all jersey numbers, except for 1
dan stond je op Stief van Manen
then you stood on Stief van Manen
and still in the 200 backstroke large pool
ehm
uhm
maar, ja
but, yes
nu zijn alle rugslagnummers
now all the back numbers
van de tabellen gezongen
sung from the tables
ehm, en heb ik nog de nummers op de
um, and do I still have the numbers on the
wisselslag, de Belgische records op de wisselslag
individual medley, the Belgian records in the individual medley
nog staan, dat zijn 3 individuele
still standing, those are 3 individuals
en eigenlijk alle aflossingen
and actually all repayments
ehm, daar de Belgische records
uh, there the Belgian records
sta ik ook nog tussen, ja
I am still in between, yes.
ja, straf
yes, punishment
Yes, I think that's nice, but yes.
records, records zijn er om verbroken
Records, records are meant to be broken.
te worden, titels niet
to become, titles not
uhm, a title is still in my eyes
wel heel schoon, ehm
well, very clean, uh
en binnenkort is het
and soon it will be
volgend jaar, binnen 10 jaar, zullen er wel
next year, within 10 years, there will be
Belgische records verbroken worden
Belgian records are being broken.
op de wisselslag
on the individual medley
ehm, nu jouw specialisatie
uhm, now your specialization
rugslag? Toen
Backstroke? Then.
ja, toen, ja
yes, then, yes
ehm, hoe
uhm, how
hoe ben je daar toegekomen?
How did you come to that?
ehm, rugslag
uhm, backstroke
ehm, ik zag
uhm, I saw
gewoon een opening om daar Belgische
just an opening to there Belgian
records te zwemmen, ehm
records to swim, um
ik was zoal van oké, maar ik
I was like okay, but I
I do want to swim titles here, but I found that quite...
Nice, that was always on the schedule.
Belgian records
Belgian records
en dan stond de naam daarbij met
and then the name was listed with
het jaartal en de
the year and the
plaats waaruit de zon werd
place from which the sun was born
en ehm, ik vond dat zo fascinerend
and um, I found that so fascinating
I thought, you know what, that would be cool.
moest mijn naam daar tussen staan, dus
if my name had to be among them, so
my goal was actually to break Belgian records
verbreken, en in de rugslag, die
break, and in the backstroke, that
tijden lagen nog niet zo heel hoog
times weren't quite that high yet
toch niet
not after all
vergeleken met de wereldtop, ehm
compared to the world top, uh
I thought, you know what, I'm going to do the backstroke.
daar even mee gaan focussen en daar
focus on that for a while and there
training, and I am with the backstroke to
de Europese jeugdkampioenschap gegaan
the European youth championship has taken place
in Helsinki en
in Helsinki and
Praag was dat denk ik, ja
I think it was Prague, yes.
ehm, en daar een vijfde plaats behaald
uhm, and there achieved a fifth place
ook, op mijn leeftijdscategorie
also, at my age category
van Europa, dus dacht ik van
from Europe, so I thought of
dat is wel nog niet slecht
that's not too bad yet
ehm, maar ik
uhm, but I
miste wel nog wat
missed something though
plezier in de rugslag vooral
pleasure in the backstroke especially
ik trainde daar niet altijd graag op
I didn't always enjoy training there.
ehm, omdat
uhm, because
it's actually just staring at the ceiling
en ehm
and um
in plaats van op de vloer
instead of on the floor
ja, en je hebt gewoon
yes, and you just have
heel weinig overzicht over de wedstrijd zelf
very little overview of the match itself
en ik had dat nodig
and I needed that
dus rugslag is echt wel zo een
So backstroke is really one like that.
een slag waar je
a blow where you
enkel met jezelf bijna bezig bent
only busy with yourself
ehm, en andere slagen
um, and other blows
don't you have that, so here you have an overview
Can you still look at the others and can you like this?
Ah, am I really in front of it or not, and do you really have it?
dat wedstrijdgevoel nog
that competitive feeling still
ehm, dus daarmee
uhm, so with that
ja, eerst ben ik begonnen met vlinderslag
Yes, I started with the butterfly stroke first.
daarna is het wel rugslag
after that it's backstroke
gegaan, en dan de vrije slag
gone, and then the freestyle
en dan was wisselslag eigenlijk wel
and then it was actually switching.
ja, de schoolslag heb ik overgeslagen
Yes, I skipped the breaststroke.
het is wel grappig
it's quite funny
dat je het zegt van ehm
that you say it like, um
rugslag, kijk alleen maar naar het plafond
backstroke, just look at the ceiling
maar mensen die geen zwemmer zijn
but people who are not swimmers
of die niet zo graag zwemmen
or those who do not like to swim
zullen zeggen, maar ja, de andere slagen
will say, but yes, the other blows
kijk je naar de vloer
are you looking at the floor
ehm, alleen vloer of plafond
uhm, just floor or ceiling
ja, ja, ja
yes, yes, yes
Yes, you would think there isn't much to it.
een loper of een fietser
a runner or a cyclist
ziet van alles rondom hem
sees everything around him
And when you're in the bath, you would think
ah, is dat niet altijd hetzelfde
ah, isn't that always the same?
maar jij gaat dat nu tegenspreken natuurlijk
but you are going to contradict that now, of course
ja
yes
je kunt heel veel drill oefeningen doen
You can do a lot of drill exercises.
om het niet zo
to not be so
eentonig te maken natuurlijk
to make it monotonous of course
je hebt de vier slagen
you have the four strokes
but you can also do quite a few other things
to grab it, are they just legs or arms
of skulling, wrikken of
of sculling, twisting of
ehm
uhm
het begint allemaal met watergewenning
It all starts with water familiarization.
jezelf eigenlijk veilig
yourself actually safe
laten dobberen op het water
let it float on the water
en dat is al van kleins af aan
and that has been since a young age
maar zelf voor volwassenen
but for adults themselves
mensen ook, van het zwemmen
people too, from swimming
hoeft niet altijd snel te zijn
doesn't always have to be fast
het hoeft gewoon van comfortabel te zijn
It just has to be comfortable.
en leuk te zijn
and to be nice
en voor iedereen is dat anders
and for everyone, that is different
de ene zwemt liever schoolslag
one prefers to swim breaststroke
de ander zwemt liever krouw of rugslag
the other prefers to swim crawl or backstroke
zijn er zelfs sommigen die enkel vlinderslag
there are even some who only do butterfly stroke
willen zwemmen ook
want to swim too
dus het is waar dat
so it is true that
het dichtst bij je
the closest to you
aanloent
loitering
en nu eigenlijk de mooie opbouw
and now actually the beautiful structure
vanuit het jeugdzwemmen
from youth swimming
is eigenlijk watergewenning
is actually water acclimatization
and from there they actually go to backstroke
omdat ze eigenlijk kunnen blijven ademen
because they can actually keep breathing
het gevoel van oké
the feeling of okay
je kan drijven, floten
you can float, whistle
en dan
and then
drijven als een ster
drifting like a star
and then they are going to teach the crow bones
omdat dat ook heel natuurlijk aanvoelt
because that also feels very natural
de armbeweging van rugslag aanleren
teaching the arm movement of backstroke
en dan zie je wel
and then you'll see
op hun 4, 5, 6 jaar
at the age of 4, 5, 6 years
Actually, I can already swim on my back.
ja
yes
vroeger was dat niet zo
It wasn't like that before.
alles begon met schoolslag
everything started with breaststroke
Yes, it is a very difficult shot to learn.
ehm, ja zeer
uhm, yes very
coördinatief arme benen
coordination-poor legs
die kikkerbenen open toe
those frog legs open toe
zoals iedereen ze kent
as everyone knows them
dat moet je dan echt ophameren
you really have to hammer that in
but it is not very natural for a child
omdat dat zo kapstokvoetjes zijn
because they are such coat rack feet
en niet ieder kind kan dat
and not every child can do that
terwijl flutterkikken
while flutter-kicking
met de benen, dat gaat wel makkelijk
with the legs, that goes quite easily
en de bedoeling
and the intention
is eigenlijk om kinderen
is actually for children
als ze in het water vallen
if they fall into the water
dat ze toch kunnen overleven zwemmen
that they can still survive swimming
that they can actually safely return to the shore
en eigenlijk door de
and actually through the
ja, die reactie te maken van
Yes, to make that reaction from
if you fall into the water with your face in the water
that you then make that reaction very quickly
om op je rug te drijven en dan zo naar de kant
to float on your back and then move to the shore like that
te gaan
to go
kicken
to kick
dus dat is eigenlijk de eerste
so that's actually the first
stijl die nu wordt aangeleerd
style that is now being taught
en van daaruit kan je nog
and from there you can still
Can you still choose, are you going to Crow?
because you're already in that rotation anyway
rugcrow naar crow
rugcrow to crow
ofwel ga je naar schoolslag
or you are going to school swimming
because that is a bit different for everyone
van hoe snel kan je
how quickly can you
naar schoolslag gaan na die rugslag fase
to go to breaststroke after that backstroke phase
dus iedereen
so everyone
has his own opinion and mindset about it.
ja
yes
how important that they at such an early possible
leeftijd beginnen met die watergewenning
age to start with water acclimatization
of?
or?
Yes, actually, that's really been the case for a while.
bij de geboorte, ik bedoel
at birth, I mean
bij de geboorte
at birth
als peuter
as a toddler
in de buik zitten we ook in
we are also in the belly
een soort water, we drijven daar ook
a kind of water, we float there too
dus als kind is het heel
so as a child it is very
gemakkelijk en natuurlijk om
easy and natural to
om in het water te gaan
to go into the water
en eigenlijk je adem
and actually your breath
to hold back and even to look directly
onder water, wat er daar gebeurt
underwater, what is happening there
wat ik soms zie bij ouders
What I sometimes see in parents.
that they often want a swimming goggles right away
geven aan het kind
give to the child
van ja, maar doet dat geen pijn?
Well yes, but doesn't that hurt?
nee, kinderen kunnen daartegen
no, children can handle that
dus dat is echt geen enkel probleem
so that is really no problem at all
en dan dingen
and then things
oprapen, staafjes oprapen
pick up, pick up sticks
and you sometimes had to push it a little deeper
soms hoor, maar ja natuurlijk wel
Sometimes I hear, but yes, of course.
veilig genoeg
safe enough
maar dus
but thus
op jonge leeftijd zo snel mogelijk
at a young age as quickly as possible
het water ingaan is zeer belangrijk
Going into the water is very important.
zodanig dat het kind zelf heel vertrouwelijk
in such a way that the child is very confidential itself
is met het water zelf
is with the water itself
and then you can do anything with it that
if you want, the child can fully express itself
omdat het zich veilig voelt
because it feels safe
en dan is het heel gemakkelijk
and then it is very easy
om een slag aan te leren
to learn a stroke
ja, watergewenning is super belangrijk
Yes, water acclimatization is super important.
wij zitten
we are sitting
not yet in the phase of having children
maar we horen dat van bevriende koppels
but we hear that from friend couples
dus watergewenning
so water management
kunnen doen tot 3 jaar
can do until 3 years
but then there is exactly such a gap
van die watergewenning
of that water extraction
until when they can actually start swimming lessons
volgen is dan vaak pas vanaf
following is often only from
6 jaar ofzo, klopt dat?
About 6 years, is that right?
ja, ja
yes, yes
er zit misschien wel een privéaanbod tussen
There might be a private offer among them.
but that it is still not so obvious
om die gap te vullen
to fill that gap
nee inderdaad, dus
no indeed, so
vanaf 6 jaar, dat is het eerste leerjaar
from 6 years old, that is the first year of school
ik sta zelf ook in
I am also standing in.
the education and you can see that
50 meter overlevend zwemmen
50 meters survival swimming
And how are you going to do that survival swimming?
Yes, usually with a breaststroke or a backstroke.
Then you're not going to say we're going to do a puppy fight.
dus
so
op die manier denk je wel van
in that way you do think of
We should teach them a lesson after all.
maar leeftijd is altijd zowel
but age is always both
de ene is iets meer
one is a bit more
of verder op een bepaalde leeftijd
or further at a certain age
motorisch gezien dan een andere
motorically then a different one
So that's also very subjective, I think.
ik
I
ik zie sommige kinderen van 4 jaar al
I already see some children at 4 years old.
echt een mooie rugslag
really a beautiful backstroke
zwemmen en iemand van een 6
swimming and someone from a 6
of 7 jaar die hetzelfde traject
of 7 years that the same trajectory
is aangaan, dat dan niet doen
is to engage, then don't do it.
dus
so
zeer individueel
very individual
en ik denk
and I think
met schoolslag kun je pas beginnen
You can only start with the breaststroke.
als je voelt van oké
if you feel okay
kun je met je hoofdje onder water
Can you put your little head underwater?
kun je ademhalen, aquatisch ademhalen
can you breathe, aquatic breathe
kun je uitblazen
can you blow out
belletjes blazen met je neus
blowing bubbles with your nose
inhale through the mouth when you come out of the water
komt
comes
en kijken onder water
and look underwater
en zeg
and say
op een spelende manier ook
in a playful way as well
vooral, niet teveel opleggen
especially, not too much impose
maar het kind zelf laten voelen
but let the child feel it themselves
van dit is
of this is
mijn grens
my limit
ga daar niet te snel over
Don't rush over that.
want het gevaar is
because the danger is
dat jij zelf sneller
that you yourself faster
wilt gaan dan het kind zelf
"Do you want to go, or should the child go itself?"
en dan begint dat te panikeren
and then that starts to panic
en dan moet je misschien terug weer
and then you might have to go back again
10 stappen terug gaan
Take 10 steps back.
dus het is observeren
so it is observing
is een van de eerste fases
is one of the first phases
that you have to do with the child itself
en als je ziet oké
and if you see okay
het kind kan van zichzelf
the child can do it by itself
al iets doen en dan kunnen misschien
doing something and then maybe being able to
kleine stappen verder gaan
take small steps forward
we gaan niet 10 stappen
we're not taking 10 steps
te ver want anders moet het team
too far because otherwise the team has to
terug pakken
take back
Spreek je nu vooral
Do you mostly speak now?
uit je ervaring als trainer
from your experience as a trainer
want momenteel geef je dus ook zwemlessen
because right now you are also giving swimming lessons
of spreek je ook uit eigen ervaring
or do you also speak from personal experience
because you may have felt it yourself as a child earlier
of?
or?
Ik ben heel lang geleden ondertussen
I have been a long time ago by now.
ik ben 31 jaar
I am 31 years old.
dus dat is wel echt lang geleden
So that was really a long time ago.
but especially as a teacher, I do see that
ik sta in het onderwijs
I work in education.
in een lagere school
in an elementary school
van het eerste tot het zesde leerjaar
from the first to the sixth grade
ook derde graad
also third grade
17-18 jaar
17-18 years
maar het is vooral
but it is mainly
I see that also in primary education.
ook
also
pro-swimlab daar werk ik ook wel
Pro-Swimlab, that's where I also work.
deels voor
partly for
en dat is echt vanaf
and that is really from
drie jaar
three years
three years and a half that they actually
in het water gaan
to go in the water
en dan merk je wel van ja oké
and then you notice, like okay
hoe wordt dat aangepakt
how is that being handled
en dan
and then
is het eigenlijk uitproberen
is it actually trying out
van wat past er, wat kan er
of what fits, what can be done
there is no absolute truth about how you
een kind kan leren zwemmen
a child can learn to swim
er zijn zo verschillende
there are so many different ones
boeken om
books to
daar instructies van te zien
to see instructions for that
video's van te zien ook
videos to see as well
On YouTube, we can see a lot of that.
en dan is het soms ook
and then it is sometimes also
zelfs op een andere manier dan wij
even in a different way than we do
het is hoe
it is how
het is je eigen stijl daarin vinden
it's about finding your own style in that
dat is het belangrijkste
that is the most important
oké
okay
zelf
self
ben jij gestopt
Have you stopped?
met zwemmen
with swimming
als topsporter dan
as an elite athlete then
in eerste keer moet ik zeggen
I must say for the first time.
in 2018
in 2018
eigenlijk 16
actually 16
I stopped immediately after the game in Rio.
een half jaar heb ik geen zwembad
I haven't had a swimming pool for half a year.
gezien
seen
Was it just really enough at that moment?
of hoe
or how
ja het was echt genoeg
Yes, it was really enough.
zeker omdat ik van ver kwam
certainly because I came from far away
mijn struggles van mijn dikke darm
my struggles with my colon
daar en nee
there and no
ik moest er eventjes uit
I needed to get out for a moment.
ik had nog een bachelor behoefte gaan
I still needed to get a bachelor's degree.
dat jaar
that year
en nog wat andere zaken
and some other matters
want ik heb lichamelijke
because I have physical
opvoeding gestudeerd de bachelor hello in
studied upbringing the bachelor hello in
Artevelde I had a few there as well.
studiepunten die ik moest
study credits that I had to
doen
to do
dus dan dat was eigenlijk mijn prioriteit
so that was actually my priority
en herstellen van
and recover from
die vier jaar of eigenlijk zelfs langer
those four years or actually even longer
dan vier
then four
maar vanaf 2017
but from 2017
ja toch weer zo'n manier gevonden van
yes, somehow found a way of
ja ik mis het lijk wel
Yes, I do miss it, you know.
ik had zo een wedstrijdje gezwommen in
I had just swum a little competition in
Leuven was dat georganiseerd door de
Leuven was organized by the
KU Leuven en
KU Leuven and
en dat was een hele goeie
and that was a really good one
time that I had swum after not doing so for half a year
having swum and I thought that is well
Cool, I actually don't need to train that much anymore.
to achieve a good performance after all
dan ben ik mee geweest
then I have been along
op stage was dat eigenlijk richting de
on stage that was actually towards the
I had already been selected for the European Campus.
en als je daar
and if you are there
dan in zit dan zit het er weer in
then it is back in there again
in de flow
in the flow
and when you say I missed you especially
echt het
really the
trainingsregime of
training regimen of
echt de prestaties leveren of
really deliver the performance or
het
the
doelbewuste of wat miste je dan precies
Purposeful or what exactly were you missing?
ik denk het gemak
I think the convenience.
het gemak
the convenience
omdat je structuur hebt
because you have structure
alles wordt gedaan voor je
Everything is done for you.
je hebt zo weinig van
you have so little of
ja oké
yes okay
op een bepaald moment
at a certain moment
You should do it once you come from top sports.
don't you remember well what you
waard bent
worth being
een heel groot van je identiteit
a very large part of your identity
is zwemmer
is swimmer
and it's about searching for another one
identiteit
identity
dat kost wel tijd en energie
that does take time and energy
you really need to consciously seek out
middelen die
means that
bij jou passen
suit you
en daarnaast is studie natuurlijk
and besides, studying is of course
de studie die je volgt
the study you are following
we hadden een goeie daarvoor
we had a good one for that
een bepaalde leidraad die je verder
a certain guideline that takes you further
kan brengen
can bring
but for me, that was also part of physical education.
binnen de sportwereld
within the sports world
was daar geen IT of
Was there no IT or?
niet binnen de landbouwsector ofzo
not within the agricultural sector or something
maar
but
zolang dat ik in die sportwereld zat
as long as I was in that sports world
werd ik altijd maar teruggetrokken
I was always so withdrawn.
in de zwemwereld
in the swimming world
en ik deed dan ook mijn bachelorproef
and I also did my bachelor thesis
over de
about the
transition from elite sports to ordinary life
and that was very appropriate for my life
en vooral op fysiek vlak
and especially in physical terms
van welke fysieke veranderingen
of which physical changes
zijn of brengen zich
are or bring themselves
teweeg nu
bring about now
wanneer je gestopt bent en hoeveel ondersteuning
when you have stopped and how much support
krijg je nog op fysiek vlak
Are you still getting it on a physical level?
vanuit Sport Vlaanderen
from Sport Flanders
vanuit de federatie
from the federation
heel weinig
very little
dus
so
uiteindelijk
finally
terug in de topsportwereld beland
returned to the world of elite sports
door een bepaald gemak
through a certain ease
ja
yes
a lot of things were done for you indeed
dus
so
dat was eigenlijk niet de beste
that was actually not the best
keuze die ik gemaakt had toen hoor
the choice I made back then, you see
but I did know that I wanted to change something
ik heb mijn
I have my
ziekte onder controle, dat was met een
disease under control, that was with a
bakster om de 6 weken
baker every 6 weeks
So I had to go to AZ Groeningen.
Rimi Cali die werd toegediend
Rimi Cali that was administered
through an infusion and I did receive it
moe van, maar was stabiel
tired of, but was stable
en ja tot
and yes until
2018 heb ik dat wel kunnen
In 2018, I was able to do that.
volhouden, topsport met die
persevere, top sports with that
colitis ulcerosa
ulcerative colitis
maar dan op een bepaald moment
but then at a certain moment
ja toch
yes, right
heel veel problemen weer en
a lot of problems again and
ja ik werd er gewoon misselijk van
Yes, it just made me feel sick.
en
and
op een duur besefte maar al
only realized for a while
Why am I actually doing this to myself?
is het zo belangrijk om te blijven
is it so important to stay
zwemmen en jezelf te pushen, te pushen
swimming and pushing yourself, pushing yourself
iedere keer over die grenzen te gaan
to cross those borders every time
want wat is stress, stress is eigenlijk iets
because what is stress, stress is actually something
dat jezelf eigenlijk constant
that you actually constantly
in te verre
too far
grenzen oplegt
imposes limits
of over je grenzen gaat
or crosses your boundaries
and there I just sat far too often
in
in
dus in 2019 denk ik dat ik
so in 2019 I think that I
dan ook beslist heb om te stoppen
I have also decided to stop.
met topsport en
with top sports and
en dan toch misschien ergens
and then maybe somewhere
een transitie te gaan naar triathlon
to make a transition to triathlon
die van hele korte
the one of very short
duur was
it was expensive
maar dat was eigenlijk
but that was actually
vooral van lopen en fietsen
especially from walking and cycling
ik wil meer buiten zijn en dat
I want to be outside more and that.
swimming too, I do it strangely but not anymore
zo competitief meer
so competitive anymore
ik heb nooit een
I have never a
triathlon gedaan, ik heb geen kwart gedaan
I did a triathlon, I didn't do a quarter.
no sprint done, neither a half nor a full one
ik heb enkel de trainingen gedaan
I have only done the training sessions.
maar
but
met trainingen heb ik goed beseft
With training, I have come to understand well.
van het is eigenlijk ook dat niet
Well, it's actually not that either.
voor mij
for me
en mijn gezondheid was
and my health was
de prioriteit toen
the priority then
for me, it didn't necessarily have to be the performance
te zijn, maar een routine
to be, just a routine
creëren waar dat
create where that
sporten voor mij gewoon een
sporting for me is just a
uitlaatklep is
outlet is
en dat binnen mijn routine past
and that fits within my routine
naast werk
besides work
waar ik gewoon mezelf kan in zijn
where I can just be myself
dat was voor mij voldoende
that was enough for me
als je nu vandaag naar jezelf kijkt
if you look at yourself today
iets wat jou gelukt is
something you succeeded in
kan je nu zeggen
can you say now
ik ben nu aan het werk en ik heb ook
I am working now and I also have
daarnaast die routine die ik had als
besides that routine I had as
topsporter, die heb ik nu vandaag ook
top athlete, I have that today as well
of in een bepaalde
or in a certain
mate? ja, zeker en vast
mate? yes, certainly and definitely
dus je traint dan ook nog
So you are still training then.
veel in het bad? zelf
a lot in the bath? yourself
I don't swim much now, maybe once or twice.
Once a week I still try to get in the water occasionally.
te zijn, lopen en fietsen
to be, to walk, and to cycle
soms ook nog een keer
sometimes again too
snowboarden, ik probeer zo veel
snowboarding, I try so much
mogelijk buiten te zijn
possibly to be outside
ja, als ik
yes, if I
fitnessen
working out
I've never been a fitness guy or anything like that either.
ik ga mij niet snel een fitnessabonnement
I am not going to get a gym membership anytime soon.
aanschaffen, maar sinds vorige
purchase, but since last
week heb ik toch nagedacht om misschien
This week I did think about maybe
toch weer even mijn gyms in te gaan
still going to my gyms for a moment again
ofzo, ja maar
or something, yes but
puur en alleen om
purely and only to
me gezond te houden eigenlijk
to keep myself healthy actually
omdat ik voel dat dat toch
because I feel that that anyway
iets is dat nodig is
something that is needed
en de prestaties
and the performances
hoeven voor mij niet per se al
don't have to necessarily do so for me already
tijd al, als ik terugkijk naar een
time already, when I look back at a
prestatie in het verlenen
performance in providing
is het een olympische
Is it an Olympic one?
spelen of een EK, WK of een
play in a European Championship, World Cup, or a
basisrecord, dan kijk ik niet altijd
basic record, then I don't always look
terug naar de prestatie zelf, maar
back to the performance itself, but
het traject die ik
the trajectory that I
gewandeld heb, of
I have walked, or
aangegaan ben
have engaged
en dat was gewoon
and that was just
leuk te maken, dat is niet
making it fun, that is not
ja, dat is hard soms hé
Yes, that can be tough sometimes, right?
het is vaak
it is often
mij vallen en opstaan doen
make me fall and get back up
de prestatie, dat is niet
the performance, that is not
waar ik altijd aan terugdenk
that I always think back to
with that I also think that, does it really need to be like that?
altijd, die prestatie
always, that achievement
te zijn, is het niet
to be, is it not
gewoon die routine te creëren en jezelf
just create that routine and yourself
soms op momenten
sometimes in moments
af en toe over die grens trekken
Occasionally crossing that border.
maar heel
but very
stapsgewijs en niet te ver
step by step and not too far
want vaak als
because often when
ik toch in een
I still in a
zwembad kom en ik
swimming pool bowl and I
sta daar al aan een startblok
stand already at a starting block
ja, dan wil ik een keer
Yes, then I want to once.
iedereen kapot zwemmen, dan is het gewoon
everyone will be worn out from swimming, then it’s just fair
I want to be the best here, I'm going here.
die winnaarsmentaliteit
that winner's mentality
is zodanig hoog bij mij
is so high with me
en die stress is
and that stress is
enorm aanwezig bij mij ook
enormously present with me too
and to regulate that, and that is with the
mental coach, probeer daar wel een manier
mental coach, try to find a way there
in te vinden om dat
to find that
een beetje te onderdrukken ook, een bepaalde
a little too suppress as well, a certain
rust binnen jezelf te vinden
to find peace within yourself
voor mij is dat
for me that is
in 2020 is dat eigenlijk
in 2020 is that actually
echt op mijn pad gekomen, meditatie
really come my way, meditation
en
and
dat heeft mij enorm geholpen toen
that helped me enormously back then
ja, dus
yes, so
dat doe ik nog altijd
I still do that.
iedere dag ook
every day too
ook yoga
also yoga
ook, ja, dat zijn de manieren
Yes, those are the ways.
that I find for myself to find peace
de breathwork sessies
the breathwork sessions
die ik ook elke dag doe
that I also do every day
gezond eten, gezond leven
healthy eating, healthy living
en de rest komt vanzelf
and the rest will follow naturally
vooral dat
especially that
maar ik vind het mooi
but I think it's nice
that you describe it, that you say of
het traject is eigenlijk bijna minstens zo belangrijk
the process is actually almost at least as important
als dan effectief het resultaat
if so, effectively the result
ja natuurlijk, de federatie
yes of course, the federation
zal daar anders over zeggen
I will say differently about that.
we tellen enkel de resultaten
We only count the results.
maar
but
Now you can say that, but could you say that then too?
zeggen, toen je er nog volop in
say, when you were still fully in it
zat op dat moment, of
was at that moment, or
nee, toch moeilijk
no, still difficult
nee, heel moeilijk
no, very difficult
because then the result is truly what matters most
uiteindelijk is het ook zo
in the end, it is also like that
ik werd betaald voor te zwemmen
I was paid to swim.
dus dat was mijn werk
so that was my job
door Sport Vlaanderen
by Sport Vlaanderen
dus dat was ieder jaar dat je
so that was every year that you
een prestatie moest neerzetten
to achieve a performance
and that was a top 8 place in the
Europese kampusschappen, of een top 12
European campus championships, or a top 12.
op een WK of een speel
at a World Cup or a game
en vanaf mijn 18 jaar
and from my 18th year
lukte mij dat
I succeeded in that.
so I would also be paid by Sport Vlaanderen
niet veel
not much
maar op basis van je diploma
but based on your diploma
die je behaalt
that you achieve
so not necessarily on your performance, but you did have to
een top 8 zwemmen, of een top 12 wereldwijd
a top 8 swimming, or a top 12 worldwide
en het is eigenlijk
and it is actually
just the impression that you can feel a little
en eigenlijk
and actually
als ik daar nu naar terugkijk
if I look back at that now
denk ik wel van
I think so.
is het wel een goed idee geweest
Was it a good idea after all?
dat dat mijn werk was
that that was my job
Was that a good idea that I got paid?
op basis van prestaties
based on performance
want
want
uiteindelijk kan ik daar wel
in the end, I can do that.
een nee op antwoorden
a no to answers
het heeft mij geholpen
it has helped me
ik ben vast
I am fixed.
maar wat is het alternatief?
but what is the alternative?
er is toch niet echt een keuze?
Isn't there really a choice?
uiteindelijk kunnen ze zeggen
eventually they can say
van, weet je, je kunt misschien
Well, you know, maybe you can.
You are allowed to join on internships, everything was paid for.
for you, but you just don't really deserve it
iets aan, of je krijgt levenslang
do something about it, or you’ll get life in prison
bijvoorbeeld
for example
zwem
swim
alternatieven, dus je mag altijd naar een
alternatives, so you can always go to a
swimming pool for the rest of your life
je moet daarvoor niet betalen, ofzo
You don't have to pay for that, or something.
If I go to a float pool once, yes, it also costs 5 or 6 euros to pay.
of
of
ja, dat je na je topsportwereld
Yes, that after your top sports world
toch nog kunt blijven leven
still can live on
of
of
gebruik maken van je
make use of your
jaren dat je echt heel veel ingezet
years that you really invested a lot
hebt op de sport zelf
have on the sport itself
en dat is op een
and that is on a
ik denk een veel duurzamere manier
I think a much more sustainable way.
dan enkel maar te zeggen van
then just to say of
we betalen je per jaar
we pay you annually
voor die prestatie
for that achievement
maar dan een keer als je stopt
but then once you stop
dat is hard hé
that's tough, isn't it?
go ahead, probeer maar zelf
Go ahead, give it a try yourself.
je leven op te bouwen hé nu
to build your life up now, huh
er zijn wel
there are indeed
er zijn wel mensen die daar wel
There are indeed people who do.
een kleine ondersteuning in bieden
to provide a little support
dat zijn maar 5, 6 sessies ofzo
that's just 5 or 6 sessions or so
waar je daarbij kunt
where you can do so
loopbaanbegeleiding
career counseling
noemen ze dat
they call that
Yes, then you can make use of that.
maar te weinig nog eigenlijk
but actually too little still
en ik denk op een manier
and I think in a way
van kijk, tijdens je topsportjaar
from look, during your top sports year
hoef je niet per se
you don't necessarily have to
duizenden euro's te verdienen
to earn thousands of euros
je wilt gewoon comfortabel kunnen sporten
you just want to be able to exercise comfortably
en rustig
and quiet
en without stress
and without stress
en het is pas
and it is only
it would simply give you less stress too
if you know that you can still be supported
na je topsportcarrière
after your top sports career
en dat was het toen soms van
and that was sometimes it then
ik mag geen blessures krijgen
I must not get any injuries.
mag niet gekwetst krijgen
must not get hurt
mag niet ziek worden
must not get sick
en dat was het vooral een beetje
and that was mainly a bit of that
dat idee van
that idea of
het moet
it must
vanuit prestaties zijn
from performance are
hetgene wat je van trainingsarbeid
what you get from training work
verricht hebt ofzo
you have done or something
dat maakt eigenlijk geen bal uit
that actually doesn't matter at all
voor hen
for them
voor hen is dat
for them, that is
but for you, that is indeed a
de manier waarom
the way in which
als je een topprestatie wil neerzetten
if you want to achieve a top performance
natuurlijk
of course
het is duidelijk dat je daar al
It is clear that you have already been there.
heel veel
a lot
zelf over hebt nagedacht
thought about yourself
enzovoort
and so on
dat kan ook niet anders
that can't be any different
if you are constantly in that sport
je bent dan ook na
you are then also late
jouw actieve carrière op wereldreis
your active career traveling the world
vertrokken
departed
is het ook daar dat je
is it also there that you
over deze zaken heel veel hebt
about these matters a lot have
thought about it or was that long before too
of hoe heeft
or how has
die wereldreis, hoe stond je daarin
that world trip, how did you feel about it?
want je bent een jaar weg geweest
because you have been away for a year
8 maand
8 months
geen jaar maar 8 maand
not a year but 8 months
ja dat was met mijn toen
yes that was with my then
voormalige vriendin ook
former girlfriend too
en ja dat was
and yes that was
een reis die ik altijd wel wou
a trip that I always wanted
maken ook
also make
nieuw zeeland, australië, indonesië
New Zealand, Australia, Indonesia
ook met de camper in
also with the camper in
de balkan vooral, albanie
the Balkans mainly, Albania
montenegro, zuiden van griekenland
Montenegro, south of Greece
peloponnesus
Peloponnesus
italië, zwitserland, spanje
Italy, Switzerland, Spain
zo die ja eigenlijk een beetje
so yes, actually a little bit
van alles gedaan daar
done all sorts of things there
and traveling itself was actually for me
puur en alleen
pure and simply
naar zelfontwikkeling toe
towards self-development
boeken lezen, mensen
reading books, people
nieuwe cultuur leren kennen
getting to know a new culture
I had already seen quite a lot of the world.
zelf
self
en dat is ook een van mijn
and that is also one of my
ja
yes
doelstellingen geweest denk ik als zwemmer
I think there have been goals as a swimmer.
van ik wil de wereld ontdekken
I want to explore the world.
met de sport, dat is tof
With the sport, that's great.
en
and
dat was een van die motivaties
that was one of those motivations
die ik had ofzo
that I had or something
maar dan uiteindelijk
but then eventually
zag je niet heel veel van
didn't you see very much of
van het zwembad of van het hotel
from the swimming pool or from the hotel
dus wilde
so wanted
eigenlijk daarnaast ook nog gewoon
actually just beside that too
go into the sea once, surf once
of eens een keer uit gaan
or go out for once
of de
of the
eetkraampjes die langs de straat
street food stalls
standing and still tasting those things once
ja dus
yes so
dat is niet meer een teken
that is no longer a sign
van sport, maar vooral van waar
of sport, but especially from where
heb je zin in
are you in the mood for
en ik heb gewoon immens
and I just have immensely
veel boeken gelezen daar
read many books there
over die acht maanden
about those eight months
omdat er daar gewoon tijd voor was
because there was simply time for it there
ik werkte niet, dus dat was
I wasn't working, so that was.
ja op basis ook van
yes based also on
help x heet dat, dus eigenlijk
help that's what it's called, so actually
verblijf je voor een bepaalde
Are you staying for a specific duration?
periode, hoe lang dat je wilt
period, how long you want
bij een familie
with a family
of bij mensen en dan is er
or with people and then there is
gratis eten en drank voorzien
free food and drinks provided
ook verblijf is gratis
Accommodation is also free.
maar in de plaats werkte je bijvoorbeeld
but instead you worked for example
drie of vier uurtjes per dag
three or four hours per day
was dat blueberry picking of
was that blueberry picking or
was dat
was that
een huis renoveren
renovating a house
dat was geen gemakkelijke taak daar
that was not an easy task there
maar ja
but yes
farming
farming
dus
so
ja dat waren toffe
Yes, those were cool.
things that we didn't do in Belgium or something
en ja en daar
and yes and there
naast hadden wij gewoon nog
besides, we just still had
de ruimte om
the space to
the country or the regions a little too
kennen en dat was om de twee
know and that was every two
weken gingen we wel zeker in Australië
We definitely went to Australia for weeks.
en Nieuw-Zeeland is dat heel bekend
and that is very well known in New Zealand.
dat deden we daar vooral
we did that there mainly
in Indonesië was dat in Ubud zaten wij daar
In Indonesia, we were in Ubud.
vooral daar lang gezeten
especially sat there for a long time
maar dan ook de kleine eilandjes
but also the small islands
een keer gedaan
done once
dat is gewoon vakantie gevoel
that's just vacation feeling
vanuit
from
het heel gestructureerde
the very structured
topsport bestaan naar dan
top sports exist after then
eigenlijk de absolute vrijheid
actually the absolute freedom
ja
yes
ja ja
yes yes
de vrijheid op een andere manier ontdekken
discovering freedom in a different way
het zwemmen is een vrijheid geweest
swimming has been a freedom
de sport is een vrijheid
sport is freedom
maar inderdaad het is daar ook gewoon
but indeed it's just like that there too
I just wanted a time without winter for once.
doorgaan geen regen
continue no rain
dus dat was ook gewoon
so that was just
geen winter en altijd zomer
no winter and always summer
so that was also the month of November back then
december januari waar we
December January where we
dan in Australië en Nieuw-Zeeland
than in Australia and New Zealand
ja fantastische reis daar
Yes, fantastic trip there.
gemaakt ja ja ja en ook
made yes yes yes and also
hele ja op
yes all the way
relationeel vlak natuurlijk
relational level naturally
een test voor ons geweest
a test for us
zeker als je met twee
sure, especially when you're with two
acht maand samen zit
eight months together
dus ja dat heeft ons
so yes that has us
zeker geholpen en gegroeid eigenlijk
certainly helped and actually grown
als persoon
as a person
en je bent vorig jaar in mei teruggekomen
and you came back last year in May
of zo dacht ik of
or so I thought or
ja eind april of zoiets ja
Yes, the end of April or something like that, yes.
inderdaad dan ben ik
indeed then I am
eigenlijk gesolliciteerd in
actually applied in
balie zelf
counter itself
omdat als ik terugkwam ben ik
because when I came back I am
direct gaan beginnen werken ook
direct going to start working too
dus ik heb
so I have
ja dus ik heb gesolliciteerd in
Yes, so I have applied at
april dus toen twee
April, then two.
weken voordat ik terugkwam in balie
weeks before I returned to the counter
"Did I apply at the counter then?"
ja ja ja en dan
yes yes yes and then
I came home and then a week later.
werd ik in puinbroek als sportlesgever
I was in ruins as a physical education teacher.
daar
there
je wou dat direct starten of
you wanted to start that directly or
bewuste keuze
conscious choice
ja bewuste keuze om direct terug weer
Yes, a conscious choice to go back immediately again.
because if I were home and then
nog alles moet uitzoeken
still need to figure everything out
dat was voor mij niet naar dan
that was not to my liking then
so I just want to get started right away
And yes, there was just a job opening available.
daar als sportlesgever en
there as a sports instructor and
ik heb daar gewoon
I just have it there.
ja direct ja op gezegd
Yes, directly yes, said.
met volle hoesting en
with full gusto and
ik werk er nu nog soms dus
I'm still working on it sometimes now.
in puinbroek dat is een fantastisch domein
in Puinbroek, that is a fantastic domain
om daar te werken
to work there
ja ja absoluut
yes yes absolutely
oké
okay
volg je het zwemmen
Are you following the swimming?
op vandaag nog heel actief
as of today still very active
of van een afstand
or from a distance
van op een afstand
from a distance
af en toe ook wel
now and then too
ik geef vaak
I often give.
zwemclinics
swimming clinics
dus dat is
so that is
eigenlijk over een bepaald topic
actually about a certain topic
waar ik over ga spreken
what I am going to talk about
tonen
to show
that is then for example about a certain battle
of over een keerpunt
or about a turning point
of zelfs mindset
or even mindset
naar training toe
to training
naar wedstrijden toe
to matches
ook een levensstijl
also a lifestyle
niet alleen voor topsporters
not only for top athletes
maar ook gewoon voor de gewone mens
but also just for the ordinary person
is dat binnen een clubverband
Is that within a club context?
is dat los
is that loose
is dat in scholen
Is that in schools?
dus daar ben ik mee bezig
so that's what I've been working on
met zwemclinics
with swimming clinics
workshops zijn dat eigenlijk
What are workshops actually?
en daarnaast
and besides
Yes, I do follow it a little bit.
het waren nu nogal langs de wereldkampioenschappen
It was quite along the World Championships.
maar ik zat net in Zwitserland
but I was just in Switzerland
ik was gaan snowboarden daar
I had gone snowboarding there.
So it wasn't obvious to follow everything there.
maar ja
but yes
ja het is
yes it is
very nice to look back on that
en ook af en toe te zien van
and also occasionally to see from
What are they doing there on the 200 individual medley right now?
dus je vergelijkt wel een klein beetje
so you are comparing a little bit
het niveau nu als toen
the level now as then
dus dat
so that
gebeurt wel
happens indeed
er is momenteel een groot talent
there is currently a great talent
aan het opstaan heb ik begrepen
I understood upon rising.
Lucas Anvaux
Lucas Anvaux
heeft daar een vijfde plaats behaald
achieved a fifth place there.
nu op dat WK
now at that World Cup
and has twice interrupted the Belgian short.
dus dat is
so that is
dat is veelbelovend
that is promising
dat is iemand van een meter 94
that is someone who is 1.94 meters tall
en schoenmaat 49
and shoe size 49
behoorlijk fenomenaal
quite phenomenal
ken je hem
do you know him
een beetje of
a little bit of
ik heb hem ontmoet
I met him.
en ik ken hem niet persoonlijk
and I don't know him personally
but yes, I have done it a few times already
zien zwemmen ook in Antwerpen
see swimming also in Antwerp
en ja zijn stijl is ongelooflijk
And yes, his style is incredible.
mooi
beautiful
prachtig
beautiful
He really has the build of a swimmer as well.
hij heeft het meegekregen
he has picked it up
hij was vroeger een golfer
he used to be a golfer
and now he has taken up swimming
het is ook een beetje een zwemfamilie
it's also a bit of a swimming family
zijn zus is ook
his sister is also
Camille Anvaux
Camille Anvaux
is ook heel goed
is also very good
op de vrije slag
on the freestyle
maar hij traint in California
but he trains in California
dus hij
so he
traint vooral in het buitenland
train mainly abroad
dus hij heeft wel
so he does have
a large part of his youth here in Belgium
getraind, maar zijn ervaring
trained, but his experience
zeker naar het senioreniveau
certainly to the senior level
heeft hij in het buitenland opgedaan
he gained abroad
maar
but
veelbelovend natuurlijk voor Parijs
promising of course for Paris
als hij nu al vijfde wordt
if he already becomes fifth now
op het WK, 23 jaar
at the World Cup, 23 years old
ja
yes
ik denk dat hij
I think that he
mijn jongste zus zei het ook nog
my youngest sister said it too
van
of
wat zullen de prestaties worden denk je
What do you think the performances will be?
in Parijs
in Paris
dat is een vraag
that is a question
die we gaan kunnen zien
that we will be able to see
maar natuurlijk
but of course
op de Spelen zelf
at the Games themselves
kan er nog van alles gebeuren
anything can still happen
je weet dat nooit
you never know
ik supporte voor iedere Belg
I support every Belgian.
zelfs voor internationale zwemmers ook
even for international swimmers too
die het allerbeste uit zichzelf kunnen halen
who can bring out the very best in themselves
ongeacht welk traject
regardless of the path
dat ze zijn aangegaan
that they have entered into
daar hebben we nog
there we still have
Roos van Otterdijk
Rose van Otterdijk
Florien Gaspar
Florien Gaspar
Valentin Dumont
Valentin Dumont
er zijn nog wel een paar zwemmers
there are still a few swimmers
they are still very young too, I thought
ja die zijn nog wel jong
Yes, they are still quite young.
Valentin is al iets langer
Valentin is a bit taller already.
senior, ja op seniorniveau
senior, yes at senior level
Beze heeft ook een aantal bajesterrecords
Beze also has a number of bajester records.
een paar naam staan
a few names stand
op de 400 vrijslag, 200 denk ik ook
in the 400 freestyle, 200 I think as well
maar
but
ik weet niet
I don't know.
there is still a long journey ahead
you can now based on the performance
op het WK schatten
at the World Cup estimate
You can already say something about their shape.
maar sta je nog te ver weg
but you are still too far away
de prestatie kan geleverd worden
the performance can be delivered
op de Spelen zelf
at the Games themselves
er zijn zoveel
there are so many
dat is echt gewoon een momentopname
that is really just a snapshot
er kan nog van alles gebeuren
anything can still happen
je kijkt er alvast naar uit
you are already looking forward to it
naar de Spelen in Parijs
to the Games in Paris
ja
yes
zelf ga ik niet gaan kijken
I myself am not going to watch.
maar ik ga het sowieso wel volgen
but I will definitely keep following it anyway
zeker en vast
certain and sure
als
if
competitiebeest die je toch bent
competitive beast that you are
heb je ergens nog
do you have something somewhere
de ambitie
the ambition
om dan bijvoorbeeld
for example
suppose now that you are a very good swimmer
begeleid
accompany
waar je echt heel veel talenten in ziet
where you really see a lot of talents
Would that be an ambition to become someone like that?
echt naar het topveld
really towards the top field
te brengen
to bring
spelen ofzo te begeleiden
to guide or something like playing
is dat lief bij jou?
Is that sweet of you?
ja hoor
Yes, of course.
iedere keer als ik
every time I
iemand zie zwemmen
someone sees swimming
is dat direct zo talenten
Is that directly such talents?
detective dat ik ben en
detective that I am and
and from there it can still be fine-tuned
worden of daar of daar
become of there or there
ik ben een heel analytisch
I am very analytical.
hoofd
head
of ja ik kan heel makkelijk
Oh yes, I can do it very easily.
to see in someone whether they have talent or not
in het zwemmen dan vooral
in swimming especially
maar
but
ik denk ooit misschien wel
I think maybe someday.
in die echte trainer
in that real trainer
als trainer te werk te gaan
to work as a trainer
alleszins in België
certainly in Belgium
but I actually want to learn first I want to see
ik wil observeren ik wil eerst
I want to observe, I want to first.
sterk in mijn schoen staan
to have a strong position in my shoe
en mijn eigen mening hebben over alles
and have my own opinion about everything
en ik merk
and I notice
ik ben 31 jaar en de echte
I am 31 years old and the real one.
toptrainers zijn al een pak ouder ook
Top trainers are also quite a bit older.
en ik
and I
besef van ik heb nog wel
I realize that I still have.
to go through a process first before I get there
als trainer sta
as a trainer I stand
I can do it through the club, I have it too.
een paar jaar gedaan in Mullebeke in Iesegem
spent a few years in Mullebeke in Iesegem
altijd bij
always there
Gold trained here in Zwevegem and also there.
vaak wel een keer training gegeven ook
often given training once as well
ehm
uhm
maar toch merk ik van
but still I notice from
you can only really learn a lot if you are there as well
buiten staat en als mens
outside stands and as a person
ook het menselijke ziet
also sees the human
dus niet alleen vanuit de topsport
so not only from top sports
van enkel de atleet zelf
of only the athlete themselves
but what is there besides that athlete too
to see and then you really go deeper
in ehm ook naar
in um also to
ehm
uhm
een bepaalde rust vinden ofzo
finding a certain calm or something
ehm
uhm
heel veel zwemmers die
a lot of swimmers who
die zodanig gedrild zijn en
who have been trained in such a way that
altijd maar willen presteren en beter zijn
always wanting to perform and be better
willen doen maar
want to do but
ja vaker niet
yes more often not
durven uitkomen ofzo
dare to come out or something
en ehm
and um
ja ja ja en het is dat
Yes yes yes and that's it.
dat ik graag misschien zou
that I would maybe like to
willen ja implementeren
want to implement yes
bij een club of atleet
at a club or athlete
bij atleten zelf
by the athletes themselves
You can be people, you can do this.
you can do that but there is a certain
vorm daarin en
form in it and
I would like to help you further with that.
je zit als zwemtrainer
you are sitting as a swimming coach
niet alleen een zwemtrainer maar een coach
not only a swim coach but a coach
een mental coach en
a mental coach and
je begeleidt die zwemmers op alle gebieden
you support those swimmers in all areas
ehm en dat heb ik ook wel
uhm and I do have that as well
really noticed so it's not just
writing sketches and just going to deliver them
ehm als je echt
uhm if you really
een goede topcoach wilt zijn dan
then you want to be a good top coach
moet je jezelf ook heel goed kennen
you also need to know yourself very well
weet ook wat
know what else
dat er verwacht wordt om echt
that it is expected to be real
to be good and then it goes deeper in
vanuit ik noem dat
from which I call that
een KPNI mindset
a KPNI mindset
klinische psychoneuroimmunologie
clinical psychoneuroimmunology
vanuit Leo Pruinboom en
from Leo Pruinboom and
zijn visie deel ik gewoon
I simply share his vision.
heel hard
very hard
ook mijn ziekte bijvoorbeeld
also my illness for example
I also owe that to Thomas Davé.
and that is also someone from the KPNI
wereld die vanuit een holistisch
world that is viewed from a holistic perspective
kader nadenkt en
thinks about the framework and
dan denk ik van oké
then I think okay
dit is het menselijke die naar boven
this is the human that rises up
comes and we will go deeper into that and
nu kunnen we pas
now we can only
verder met ons
further with us
with the life we are currently living
oké wel ik wou eigenlijk vragen
Okay, well I actually wanted to ask.
maar
but
wat zou je vandaag willen weten
What would you like to know today?
dat je tien of vijftien
that you ten or fifteen
jaar geleden nog niet wist
years ago still didn't know
maar dan is het misschien wel net
but then it might just be fair
hetgeen dat je net verteld hebt
what you just told
om verder te kijken
to look further
dan de schema's en zo verder
then the schedules and so on
en echt van te durven loskomen
and really daring to let go
ja durven loskomen
yes, dare to let go
inderdaad van het vastgegeven
indeed of the provided
niet
not
hetzelfde gaan geven wat je zelf
give the same as you yourself
gekregen hebt
received
want dat zijn
because that is
vaak het geval wel
often the case yes
en eigenlijk persoonlijk groeien
and actually grow personally
en dat durven delen
and daring to share that
en
and
daar geen schrik op hebben
not to be afraid of that
om soms die diepte in te gaan
to sometimes delve into that depth
want sport
want sport
is passie
is passion
sport is
sport is
liefde
love
is alles wat je
is everything that you
in je hebt, zeker de topsport
in you have, certainly top-level sports
en dan staat je daar niet
and then you are not there
met een mindset van
with a mindset of
ja
yes
ik wil hier nu zo snel mogelijk
I want to do this as quickly as possible.
wel met een bepaalde mindset van
well with a certain mindset of
I want to swim to the other side as soon as possible.
maar
but
wat als ik dat heb gedaan
what if I did that
hoe voel ik mij dan
how do I feel then
is dat nu wel nodig
Is that really necessary?
die vragen stellen, die diepere vragen stellen
asking those questions, asking the deeper questions
van oké en wat dan daarna bijvoorbeeld
okay and what then afterwards for example
ja
yes
question after question after question and asking questions
blijven navragen bij jezelf
keep asking yourself
maar er zijn daar wel
but there are indeed
antwoorden op
answers to
en het is door
and it is through
soms gewoon te observeren
sometimes just to observe
en daar in dialoog
and there in dialogue
in te gaan met mensen
to engage with people
te spiegelen dat je soms
to mirror that sometimes
een antwoord weet daarop
an answer to that
en dan brengt
and then brings
that just a certain calm comes with you
en kun je gewoon alles aan
and can you just handle everything?
je bent gewoon oppermachtig en
you are simply omnipotent and
de struggles
the struggles
zoals ik bijvoorbeeld al altijd al
as I have always already
gehad heb in mijn wisselslag en mijn schoolslag
had in my butterfly and my breaststroke.
ik geef nu maar een stom voorbeeld
I'm just giving a stupid example now.
van mijn kick
of my kick
ja die kick is niet goed
yes, that kick is not good
ik moet daar vaker op train
I need to train on that more often.
maar je visualiseert gewoon jezelf
but you just visualize yourself
met een hele goeie kick
with a really good kick
en dan, je doet dat niet zomaar
And then, you don't just do that.
je moet echt even in je kijken
You really need to take a look inside yourself.
van ja maar
from yes but
How is it now and how can we improve that?
en
and
en het gewoon ook leren
and just learn it too
ja
yes
in je hoofd al perfect bijna
in your head almost perfect
te gaan afspelen om het dan ook
to play it out so that it also
in de praktijk uit te voeren
to be carried out in practice
ja vooral
yes, especially
dat eigenlijk
that actually
oké
okay
it is beautiful to see how passionate
dat je er over vertelt
that you tell about it
Emanuel, echt waar
Emanuel, really true.
ehm
uhm
ja de laatste
yes the last one
vragen die ik staan had vatten het
questions that I had standing summarize it
zo allemaal wel wat samen hoor
So it's all well together, you know.
I would like to ask what you would like to convey to young swimmers.
but yes, I think that too at this point
min of meer beantwoord
more or less answered
ehm
uhm
kwaliteiten die een goeie zwemmer
qualities of a good swimmer
echt nodig heeft
really needs
ja ik kan dat wel zeggen hoor
Yes, I can say that!
lenigheid is sowieso wel ene
Laziness is definitely one.
zeker als je op alle slagen
certainly when you hit all the beats
goed wil zijn
to be goodwill
because I really notice a lack of flexibility
bij de kinderen die er nu zijn
with the children that are there now
als vroeger
like before
oeh
ooh
de lenigste dag van je leven
the longest day of your life
is at your birth but that only gets stiffer.
als je ouder wordt zeggen ze
as you get older they say
het belangrijkste is consistent worden
the most important thing is to become consistent
of consistent zijn met je lenigheid
or to be consistent with your flexibility
ehm
uhm
ja blessure preventie
Yes injury prevention.
oefeningen wil ik zeggen van probeer
exercises I want to say of try
af en toe vaak ook wel
now and then, often as well
ehm niet alleen de spierroepen
uhm not just the muscle calls
te trainen waar je al opgetraind
to be trained where you are already trained
bent maar vaak die andere spierroepen
are often those other muscle calls
train once to avoid injuries
ehm
uhm
je ziet toch vaak dat kinesisten
you often see that physiotherapists
de brandjes mogen blussen
the fires may be extinguished
ehm terwijl je
uhm while you
maybe you can do something about it yourself too
ehm dat vooral
uhm that especially
en ik zou zeggen
and I would say
probeer daar gewoon genieten van
just try to enjoy that
van de
of the
freedom that you feel in the sport itself
Is swimming another sport?
ehm
uhm
maar
but
make sure that it still remains a pleasure
en een passie blijft
and a passion remains
en zelfs als het
and even if it
moeilijk wordt
becomes difficult
een rust vinden en
find a rest and
teruggaan van waarom ben ik begonnen
going back from why I started
and for what reason did I start that?
en dan vinden die motivatie wel
and then they will find that motivation
groter
bigger
I think it's a very nice note to conclude on.
Emanuel
Emanuel

I want to thank you for getting this far.
and to talk about swimming sports so passionately
Heel graag gedaan
You're very welcome.
moest het nog eens voorvallen
if it should happen again
dan wil ik het nog verder vertellen
then I want to tell it even further
