Vandaag hoofdstuk 2 van mijn afgelopen week verschenen literaire debuut De Man Die Alles Had.

Today chapter 2 of my recently released literary debut The Man Who Had Everything.

Chapter 2. The Hague.

De workshop Mindful Yoga is bij Odium wereldwijd minstens één keer per week verplicht.

The Mindful Yoga workshop at Odium is mandatory at least once a week worldwide.

Het dwingende karakter van de lessen leidt ertoe dat de stress die ze horen te verlichten voor de man met elke pose toeneemt.

The compelling nature of the lessons causes the stress that they are supposed to alleviate for the man to increase with each pose.

Het is een maand voordat hij op het bootje bij St. John's zal aanmeren.

It is a month before he will dock at the little boat in St. John's.

Ook nu kan hij zijn tenen niet aanraken.

He still can't touch his toes now.

Hoewel de dag nog maar net is begonnen, is de bedrijfsyoga de zoveelste op een lange lijst irritaties.

Although the day has just begun, the company yoga is yet another on a long list of irritations.

Een van deze irritaties is het feit dat Odium dat afgelopen kwartaal een recordomzet van 57 miljard euro boekte,

de yoga instructrice heeft wegbezuinigd.

Ze vormde blijkbaar een te groot deel van het stress relief budget.

Met een stuk of veertig werknemers in een zaal op de 22e verdieping van het kantoor staan te kijken naar een scherm.

Volgens Odium zijn de lessen live en geeft ze nu yoga aan duizenden werknemers over de hele wereld.

According to Odium, the lessons are live and she is now teaching yoga to thousands of employees around the world.

Maar de man heeft een zeer sterk vermoeden dat dat een leugen is.

But the man has a very strong suspicion that it is a lie.

...terwijl ze het heet...

Bij de tree pose sta je op één voet, terwijl de andere voet op de binnenkant van het dijbeen rust.

Zijn voet rust niet op zijn dijbeen, maar eerder tegen zijn knieband.

Hoger lukt de man niet.

Hij probeert zijn irritaties bij het uitademen los te laten.

In plaats daarvan krijgt hij een hoestaanval waarbij hij, voorover gebogen, met zijn handen op zijn knieën...

...slijm en gal op moet hoesten, om dit dan noodgedwongen weer in te slikken.

Niemand reageert op zijn hoestaanval.

Iedereen wisselt van been en staat weer netjes in tree pose.

Zijn collega's hebben geen oog voor dingen die niet direct betrekken...

De man gaat op zijn andere been staan en wankelt de tijd door.

Goed, deze vindt de man stiekem nog wel lekker.

Good, the man secretly still likes this.

Hij zit op zijn knieën, met zijn voeten bij elkaar en zijn knieën wijd.

He is on his knees, with his feet together and his knees wide apart.

Voorover gebogen, met zijn armen voor zich uitgestrekt.

Leaning forward, with his arms stretched out in front of him.

Hij hoeft het scherm niet te zien, om te weten dat de instructrice met haar voorhoofd en neus op de mat ligt.

He doesn't need to see the screen to know that the instructor is lying on the mat with her forehead and nose.

Hij haalt dat niet. Lang niet.

He won't make it. Not at all.

Hij houdt zijn ogen gesloten omdat hij, als hij ze opent, enkel het witte Odium-logo op zijn blauwe yoga-mat ziet.

He keeps his eyes closed because when he opens them, he only sees the white Odium logo on his blue yoga mat.

Take this time to set some goals for today.

Charge up and ground down.

Even is het stil, in afwachting van haar laatste woorden die elke week hetzelfde zijn

Hoewel dit een prachtig kantoor is, een moderne glazen toren die tot in de hemel rijdt,

Although this is a beautiful office, a modern glass tower that reaches into the sky,

is het niks vergeleken met het gloednieuwe hoofdkantoor dat afgelopen jaar in Silicon Valley is geopend.

it's nothing compared to the brand new headquarters that opened last year in Silicon Valley.

De Odium ring, zoals het futuristische bouwwerk is gedoopt, heeft de vorm van een gigantische O, het bedrijfslogo.

The Odium ring, as the futuristic structure is called, takes the shape of a giant O, the company logo.

Het feit dat het kantoor nu operationeel is, heeft ervoor gezorgd dat iedereen die er niet werkt, automatisch in status is gedaald.

The fact that the office is now operational has caused everyone who does not work there to automatically drop in status.

Hoewel de man er niet over zou pijnen, is het niet zo.

Although the man would not suffer from it, it is not so.

Om voor zijn werkgever naar Californië te verhuizen, steekt het hem toch dat hij niet is gevraagd.

It bothers him that he was not asked to move to California for his employer.

Nadat de lift hem heeft uitgespuugd, steekt de man de eindeloze parkeerplaats over.

After the elevator has spat him out, the man crosses the endless parking lot.

Hij rookt op zijn gemak twee sigaretten in het daarvoor bestemde glazen hok.

He smokes two cigarettes at his leisure in the designated glass booth.

Hij is alleen.

He is alone.

Roken wordt zwaar tegengewerkt.

Smoking is heavily opposed.

Het is geen toeval dat dit hok zo ver bij de ingang vandaan is.

It's no coincidence that this shed is so far from the entrance.

Rokers dwarszitten is het enige waarin Odium het waard vindt om af te wijken van hun gewonelijke mantra van efficiëntie en time management.

The only thing that Odium finds worthwhile to deviate from their usual mantra of efficiency and time management is driving smokers crazy.

Per werkdag mag de man twee keer roken.

The man is allowed to smoke twice a workday.

Op zijn tempo kost dit hem ongeveer anderhalf uur.

At his pace, this will take him about an hour and a half.

Dat is zeven en een half uur per week, dertig uur per maand en dus 360 uur per jaar.

That is seven and a half hours per week, thirty hours per month, and thus 360 hours per year.

In het begin was het stelen van die uren voor de man genoeg reden.

At the beginning, stealing those hours was enough reason for the man.

Totdat hij erachter kwam dat rokers contractueel aanzienlijk minder vakantiedagen toebedeeld krijgen dan hun gezonde collega's.

Until he found out that smokers are contractually assigned significantly fewer vacation days than their healthy colleagues.

Sindsdien rookt hij enkel voor zichzelf.

Since then, he only smokes for himself.

Op zijn eerste werkdag rookte de man naast de glazen schuifdeuren voor de ingang van de wolkenkrabber.

On his first working day, the man smoked next to the glass sliding doors at the entrance of the skyscraper.

Maar luttelen seconde na het opsteken van zijn sigaret kwam er een beveiliger aanrollen op een segway.

But just a few seconds after he lit his cigarette, a security guard came rolling up on a Segway.

Het roken voor de deuren was een beetje een verhaal.

Smoking outside the doors was a bit of a story.

Het roken voor de deuren was geen vorm van stil protest, maar een oprechte fout.

Smoking in front of the doors was not a form of quiet protest, but a genuine mistake.

De man wist niet dat hij werd geacht om via een walk of shame over een eindeloze parkeerplaats een klein glazen hokje in te duiken.

The man did not know that he was expected to dive into a small glass booth across an endless parking lot via a walk of shame.

De beveiliger rolde de hele weg stapvoets met de man mee, alsof hij een arrestant begeleidde.

The security guard walked the whole way at a slow pace with the man, as if he were escorting an arrestee.

De man probeerde nog een praatje te maken.

The man tried to make small talk.

Hoe lang werkt u al voor Odium?

How long have you been working for Odium?

Meneer, ik doe gewoon mijn werk.

Sir, I'm just doing my job.

Ik probeer gewoon een praatje te maken.

I'm just trying to make small talk.

Meneer, het zou gemakkelijker zijn als u mijn instructies opvolgt.

Sir, it would be easier if you follow my instructions.

Ik ben toch onderweg naar het rookhok?

Aren't I on my way to the smoking area?

Meneer, ik verzoek u om te stoppen met tegenwerken.

Sir, I ask you to stop opposing.

Nadat de man terug is van het roken van zijn twee sigaretten is het lunchtijd.

After the man returns from smoking his two cigarettes, it is lunchtime.

Hij scant zijn keycard om de glazen schuifdeuren te openen en automatisch aan zijn werkgever te laten weten dat hij terug is van zijn sigaret.

He scans his keycard to open the glass sliding doors and automatically let his employer know that he is back from his cigarette.

Via een van de acht liften gaat hij naar de elfde.

He goes to the eleventh floor via one of the eight elevators.

Op deze verdieping bevindt zich het restaurant.

On this floor is the restaurant.

Het eten is erg goed.

The food is very good.

Dat moet de man ze nageven.

That is something the man must give them credit for.

Elke wereldkeuken komt voorbij.

Every world cuisine passes by.

Wat de man wel jammer vindt is dat alles vegetarisch is.

What the man finds unfortunate is that everything is vegetarian.

Met een zeewiersalade op zijn bord loopt hij langs de verplichte pushbutton survey.

With a seaweed salad on his plate, he walks past the mandatory pushbutton survey.

Dit is een wit doosje met drie smileys erop.

This is a white box with three smileys on it.

De linker is rood en boos.

The left one is red and angry.

De middelste geel en neutraal.

The middle one is yellow and neutral.

De rechter groen en blij.

The judge green and happy.

Hij drukt op de blije, wetend dat deze surveybot alles behalve anoniem is.

He presses on the happy button, knowing that this survey bot is anything but anonymous.

Ooit was de man het vegetarische menu zat en ramde hij elke middag op de rode knop.

Once the man was fed up with the vegetarian menu and pressed the red button every afternoon.

Al snel werd hij bij HR geroepen zodat een werknemer hen kon vragen hoe ze de kwaliteit van de lunch konden verbeteren.

He was soon called to HR so that an employee could ask them how to improve the quality of the lunch.

Nog voordat de man drie woorden kon uitbrengen werd hij onderbroken.

Even before the man could utter three words, he was interrupted.

Zo kreeg de man een werkgroep door zijn strot geduwd waar hij drie maanden onbetaald voor moest overwerken.

This is how the man was forced into a working group where he had to work unpaid for three months.

De presentaties die hij maakte over de voedingswaarde van een medium rare ribeye werden direct de prullenbak ingeworpen.

The presentations he made about the nutritional value of a medium rare ribeye were immediately thrown in the trash.

You do understand that these suggestions will make Mrs. Molenaar very uneasy.

De man wist dat mevrouw Molenaar hun rapporten nooit onder ogen zou krijgen.

The man knew that Mrs. Molenaar would never see their reports.

Ook wist hij dat de Employee Lunch Project Team Meeting enkel in het leven was geroepen om de deelnemers af te leren ooit nog op de rode knop te drukken.

He also knew that the Employee Lunch Project Team Meeting was only established to teach the participants to never press the red button again.

Sinds de werkgroep was het menu niet veranderd, maar de gemiddelde score van de survey wel 100% groen.

Since the working group, the menu had not changed, but the average score of the survey was 100% green.

Al met al hadden ze hun target behaald.

All in all, they had achieved their target.

Mevrouw Molenaar is inderdaad te druk voor rapporten.

Mrs. Molenaar is indeed too busy for reports.

About a business lunch.

Als founder en CEO van de recent in de S&P 500 opgenomen techgigant houdt ze zich bezig met belangrijkere zaken.

As the founder and CEO of the recently added tech giant in the S&P 500, she is involved in more important matters.

Afgelopen week werd ze wereldnieuws vanwege een miljardeninvestering die een geheimzinnige private groep uit Qatar had toegezegd voor Odium Sky.

Last week, she became world news due to a billion-dollar investment that a mysterious private group from Qatar had pledged for Odium Sky.

Een nog opgerichte tak van het bedrijf om high speed internet op afgelegen achtergestelde gebieden te krijgen.

A newly established branch of the company to provide high-speed internet to remote underserved areas.

Via een netwerk van zendmasten, luchtballonnen en satellieten.

Through a network of transmission towers, balloons, and satellites.

Belanghebbenden verslonden haar presentatie over het samenbrengen van de wereld via één netwerk.

Stakeholders were captivated by her presentation on bringing the world together through a single network.

Hoewel de media Odium Sky neerzetten als een soort filantropisch project, doorzag de man deze poppenkast.

Although the media portray Odium Sky as some sort of philanthropic project, the man saw through this charade.

Hij begreep dat winst de enige reden was om Odium Sky in het leven te roepen.

He understood that profit was the only reason to bring Odium Sky to life.

In Odium's ideale wereld zat iedereen op elk moment van de dag op het internet.

In Odium's ideal world, everyone was online at every moment of the day.

Op die manier verdiende het bedrijf zijn geld.

Making money.

Odium Sky was enkel een instrument om de laatste restjes mensheid hun systeem in te zuigen.

Odium Sky was merely a tool to absorb the last remnants of humanity into their system.

Daarnaast was er de onvertuinlijke situatie rondom de dood van een chauffeur die 36 uur nonstop ritten had gemaakt als bezorger voor Odium Shopping, hun mondiale online alleswinkel.

Additionally, there was the unfortunate situation surrounding the death of a driver who had made 36 hours of non-stop deliveries as a courier for Odium Shopping, their global online everything store.

Hij was op een marktkraam in Delhi ingereden nadat hij in slaap was gevallen achter het stuur.

He had crashed into a market stall in Delhi after falling asleep at the wheel.

Van zijn vieze witte bestelbusje.

De publiciteit was slecht en dus draaide de marketingafdeling overuren.

The publicity was poor and so the marketing department worked overtime.

Mevrouw Molenaar was echter al door Team Legal op de hoogte gesteld dat ze op dat front niks te vrezen had.

However, Mrs. Molenaar had already been informed by Team Legal that she had nothing to fear on that front.

Op papier was de bezorger namelijk geen werknemer van de webshop, maar een schijnzzp'er die vast zat aan een wurgcontract.

On paper, the delivery person was not an employee of the webshop, but a faux self-employed worker tied to a suffocating contract.

Het was een handige constructie die het bedrijf al vaker uit de brand had geholpen in vergelijkbare situaties.

It was a handy arrangement that had helped the company out of trouble in similar situations before.

Dan was er nog een persmomentje vanwege de miljardste betaling via Odium Pay, de cashless oplossing van het bedrijf.

Then there was another press moment due to the billionth payment via Odium Pay, the cashless solution of the company.

Ook was er een schandaal rondom een datalek bij de beveiligingscamera's die ze produceerden en een inspirerende video van een blinde hond die werd gered uit het asiel.

There was also a scandal surrounding a data leak from the security cameras they produced and an inspiring video of a blind dog being rescued from the shelter.

Dit laatste had eigenlijk niet echt iets te maken met Odium, maar algoritmes gebruikten deze video om het nieuws over de overleden bezorger naar de achtergrond te brengen.

This last point actually had nothing to do with Odium, but algorithms used this video to push the news about the deceased delivery person to the background.

Het is een groot geheim dat werknemers mevrouw Molenaar niet mogen toetwaaieren.

It is a big secret that employees are not allowed to bother Mrs. Molenaar.

In de media waar ze op handen wordt gedragen noemen ze haar gewoon bij haar voornaam, Moriko.

In the media where she is adored, they simply refer to her by her first name, Moriko.

Zoals haar voornaam doet vermoeden is Moriko niet van Nederlandse komaf.

As her first name suggests, Moriko is not of Dutch descent.

Moriko is een vrouw die zich in de midden van de wereld bevindt.

Moriko is a woman who finds herself in the middle of the world.

Moriko begon haar onconventionele leven als nazaad van een vooraanstaand Japans koppel dat hun rijkdom verwierf met het importeren van agrarische technologie uit Nederland.

Moriko began her unconventional life as the descendant of a prominent Japanese couple who acquired their wealth by importing agricultural technology from the Netherlands.

Haar ouders stonden erom bekend zeer betrokken te zijn bij de inspectie van nieuwe tractoren, combines, oogstmachines en dergelijke, al voren deze aan te kopen voor de Japanse markt.

Meneer Molenaar stortte volledig in nadat hij de klanten aan wie hij zijn John Deere 925 MyDorser had willen verkopen voor zijn ogen zag vermengen met een aanstaande oogst.

Mr. Molenaar completely broke down after he saw the customers to whom he wanted to sell his John Deere 925 MyDorser mingling with an upcoming harvest before his eyes.

Toen hij hoorde dat ze een pasgeboren dochter achterlieten zagen zijn vrouw en hij het als...

When he heard that they left behind a newborn daughter, he and his wife saw it as...

...hun verantwoordelijkheid om voor haar te zorgen.

Adopteren bleek na veelvuldig bureaucratische hoorders mogelijk.

Na de lagere school in recordtempo doorlopen te hebben was ze pas 10 toen ze op het gymnasium terecht kwam.

Ze leek alles mee te hebben.

Het was bijna te mooi om waar te zijn.

Na een tijdje begon ze hele nachten niet meer thuis te komen.

Nachten waarin haar ouders jaren verouderden.

Nights in which her parents aged years.

Waar ze die nachten was wist niemand.

Where she was those nights, no one knew.
