Ik zal een engel voor je uitsturen en ik zal de Kanaanieten, de Amorieten, Hetieten, Perizieten, Giwieten en Jebusieten verdrijven.

I will send an angel before you and I will drive out the Canaanites, the Amorites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites.

Maar ik trek niet met jullie mee, want jullie zijn een onhandelbaar volk en ik zou jullie daarom onderweg kunnen doden.

But I will not go with you, for you are a obstinate people, and I might end up killing you on the way.

Toen het volk deze onheilstijding hoorde, ging het in de rouw.

When the people heard this calamity, they went into mourning.

Verliet de tent niet.

Do not leave the tent.

Mozes zei tegen de Heer,

Moses said to the Lord,

U draagt mij wel op het volk verder te laten trekken,

You do instruct me to let the people continue to move forward,

maar u hebt mij niet laten weten wie u met mij mee zult sturen.

But you did not let me know who you will be sending along with me.

Terwijl u toch gezegd hebt,

While you have said,

jou heb ik uitgekozen,

I have chosen you,

jou ben ik goed gezind.

I am well disposed towards you.

Als dat werkelijk zo is,

laat mij dan weten wat uw plannen zijn.

Mozes zei,

Moses said,

Laat mij toch uw majesteit zien,

zei Mozes.

Hij antwoordde,

ik zal in mijn volle luister voor je langsgaan

I will pass by you in my full attention.

en in jouw bijzijn de naam van de Heer uitroepen.

and in your presence call upon the name of the Lord.

Ik schenk genade aan wie ik genade wil schenken

I grant mercy to whom I wish to grant mercy.

en ik ben barmhartig voor wie ik barmhartig wil zijn.

and I am merciful to whom I wish to be merciful.

Maar, zei hij,

But, he said,

mijn gezicht zul je niet kunnen zien,

you will not be able to see my face,

want geen mens kan mij zien en in leven blijven.

for no man can see me and live.

Toen sprak de Heer,

Het woord van onze God.

Broers en zussen,

Brothers and sisters,

gasten die vandaag bij ons zijn,

guests who are with us today,

God houdt afstand.

God keeps his distance.

Hij houdt afstand van zijn volk.

He keeps his distance from his people.

En vorige week hebben we gezien waarom.

And last week we saw why.

Het volk had God beloofd,

The people had promised God,

wij zullen u trouw zijn.

We will be faithful to you.

En we willen met u leven.

And we want to live with you.

En binnen de kortste keren

And before you know it

pleegden ze geestelijk overspel

did they commit spiritual adultery

door een gouden kalf te maken

en die afgod te aanbidden.

Dat is de reden dat God

En de Bijbel vergelijkt God daarom

Er blijft niets van jullie over,

Mozes,

Moses,

Een land van melk en honing.

En maak je geen zorgen, Mozes,

And don't worry, Moses,

ik zal al je vijanden verslaan

I will defeat all your enemies.

door die engel die ik meezend.

Er is eigenlijk maar één verschil

There is actually only one difference.

Ik ga zelf niet mee.

Verder gaat alles door.

Verder blijft alles hetzelfde.

Ik kom al mijn beloften na.

Als jij één van de Israëlieten was,

If you were one of the Israelites,

als jij Mozes was,

if you were Moses,

wat zou je daarvan gevonden hebben?

What would you have thought of that?

Of laat ik het misschien iets dichterbij brengen.

Or maybe I'll bring it a bit closer.

Stel dat God tegen jou zegt,

Suppose God said to you,

al je dromen zullen werkelijkheid worden.

All your dreams will come true.

Ik ga al je gedachten,

I will go through all your thoughts,

al je gebeden beantwoorden.

Answer all your prayers.

Je leven zal een en al zegen zijn,

Het enige is,

Ik heb geen idee wat het met jou zou doen,

maar ik denk dat er in deze wereld heel veel mensen zijn

die diep van binnen zouden denken,

dat is eigenlijk helemaal niet zo gek.

Al de zegeningen van God,

All the blessings of God,

zonder bemoeienis van God,

without interference from God,

alles wat ik graag zou willen,

zonder die heilige God in mijn leven,

without that holy God in my life,

die ook van alles van mij verlangt.

Hoe zou dat voor jou zijn,

Mozes' antwoord is duidelijk.

Moses' answer is clear.

Vers 15.

Verse 15.

Mozes zei,

Moses said,

als u niet zelf meegaat,

if you are not going along yourself,

laat ons dan niet verder trekken.

Then let's not move further.

Mozes zegt,

Moses says,

Heer, als u niet met ons meegaat,

Lord, if you do not go with us,

als we uw aanwezigheid in ons midden moeten gaan missen,

if we must start missing your presence among us,

dan hoef ik ook geen land van melk en honing.

then I don't need a land of milk and honey either.

Laat dan heel dat verhaal maar zitten.

Then just forget that whole story.

Dan hoeft het voor mij niet.

Then it doesn't have to be for me.

Mozes laat zien dat het hem om God zelf gaat.

Moses shows that it is about God himself.

Want Mozes wist wat een land,

For Moses knew what a land,

een land van melk en honing betekent.

a land of milk and honey means.

Hij was veertig jaar lang de prins van Egypte geweest.

He had been the prince of Egypt for forty years.

Hij had rijkdom gehad.

He had wealth.

Eten en drinken in overvloed.

Food and drink in abundance.

Alles wat zijn hart maar kon verlangen,

Everything his heart could desire,

dat had hij allemaal gehad.

he had experienced all of that.

Maar Mozes wist ook,

But Moses also knew,

dat vult mijn hart nooit.

that never fills my heart.

Ik wil niet zonder God, zei Mozes.

I do not want to be without God, said Moses.

Ik kan niet zonder God.

I cannot live without God.

Mijn verlangen gaat uit naar God.

My desire is directed towards God.

En daarom is Mozes lang de enige niet in de Bijbel.

And that's why Moses is not the only one in the Bible for a long time.

Vooral als je de psalmen leest,

Zo verlangt mijn ziel naar u, o God.

Of een andere psalmist die zegt,

wie heb ik behalve u in de heer?

Who do I have besides you, Lord?

Heemel.

Heaven.

Naast u vind ik nergens vreugde in op de aarde.

Next to you, I find no joy anywhere on earth.

Zelfs de hemel.

Even the sky.

Zelfs de hemel met alle glorie en rijkdom die daar is,

Even the heaven with all the glory and wealth that is there,

kan ons hart niet vervullen.

cannot fulfill our heart.

God alleen kan dat.

Only God can do that.

Of denk eens aan de woorden van Paulus.

Or think of the words of Paul.

Paulus die over alles wat het leven te bieden had schreef,

Paul who wrote about everything that life had to offer,

het is wat mij betreft waardeloze troep.

It is worthless junk as far as I'm concerned.

Want, zegt hij,

For, he says,

ik wil Jezus kennen.

I want to know Jesus.

Mijn hartverlang gaat uit naar Jezus.

My heart's longing is towards Jesus.

En niets en niemand kan de plek van Jezus innemen.

And nothing and no one can take the place of Jesus.

Dat is wat je hier bij Mozes,

That is what you have here with Moses,

ook proeft.

Leeft dat verlangen wat bij Mozes en in de rest van de Bijbel zo vaak terugkomt,

Does that desire live on that appears so often with Moses and in the rest of the Bible,

leeft dat ook in jouw hart?

Does that also live in your heart?

ICF, is dat ook ons verlangen dat God hier in ons midden is?

ICF, is that also our longing that God is here among us?

Is dat ook ons verlangen dat God hier in ons midden is?

Is that also our desire that God is here in our midst?

Ja.

Yes.

Gelukkig, er zijn een paar mensen die zeggen ja.

Een bekende kerkvader, Augustinus, heeft gezegd

A famous church father, Augustine, said

U, God, hebt ons voor uzelf gemaakt.

You, God, have made us for Yourself.

En ons hart is onrustig in ons, totdat het rust vindt in u.

And our heart is restless within us until it finds rest in You.

En dat is de waarheid.

And that is the truth.

God heeft jouw hart en mijn hart zo gemaakt

God has made your heart and my heart like this.

dat het alleen maar vervulling vindt in een diepe,

that it only finds fulfillment in a deep,

intieme, levende relatie met God.

intimate, living relationship with God.

Niets anders kan jouw hart vervullen.

Nothing else can fulfill your heart.

Daar ben je voor gemaakt, daar ben je voor ontworpen.

You were made for that, you were designed for that.

In Rhenen, in de dierentuin,

In Rhenen, in the zoo,

heb je panda-beren.

Do you have panda bears?

Wie weet er wat een panda-beer eet?

Who knows what a panda bear eats?

Bamboe, precies.

Bamboo, exactly.

En dan ook nog eens één specifieke soort bamboe.

And then also one specific type of bamboo.

Dat beest eet niets anders dan bamboe.

That beast eats nothing but bamboo.

Je kan hem fruit geven, je kan hem brokjes geven,

You can give him fruit, you can give him kibble,

je kan hem vlees geven, je kan hem brood geven.

You can give him meat, you can give him bread.

Het maakt niet uit wat je in die hokken gooit.

It doesn't matter what you throw in those boxes.

Hij laat het allemaal liggen. Hij eet alleen bamboe.

He leaves it all behind. He only eats bamboo.

Dat is het enige wat hij eet.

That is the only thing he eats.

Dat is het enige wat zijn honger stillen kan.

That's the only thing that can satisfy his hunger.

Dat is het enige waar hij van kan leven.

That is the only thing he can live on.

En jij en ik zijn een soort geestelijke panda-beren.

And you and I are a kind of spiritual panda bears.

Gemaakt door God met een hart dat alleen maar vervuld kan worden in hem.

Made by God with a heart that can only be fulfilled in Him.

En anders zul je je leven lang honger hebben.

Otherwise, you will be hungry for the rest of your life.

Geestelijke honger, geestelijke dorst,

Spiritual hunger, spiritual thirst,

geestelijke leegte.

spiritual emptiness.

Aan de binnenkant.

On the inside.

Maar er is één verschil tussen ons en die panda-beer.

But there is one difference between us and that panda bear.

Die panda-beer weet dat bamboe het enige is dat zijn honger kan stillen.

That panda knows that bamboo is the only thing that can satisfy its hunger.

Maar wij weten dat vaak niet.

But we often do not know that.

Wij proberen van alles naar binnen te proppen in ons hart.

We try to stuff everything into our hearts.

Eindeloos ook vaak dezelfde dingen.

Endlessly often the same things.

We zijn al 25 keer op vakantie geweest.

We have been on vacation 25 times.

Het heeft ons nooit vervuld.

It has never fulfilled us.

Maar ja, wie weet dat het keer 26 wel vervulling geeft.

But yes, who knows that the times 26 might bring fulfillment.

Maar het antwoord is dit.

But the answer is this.

Je bent voor God gemaakt.

You are made for God.

Jouw hart kan nergens anders vervulling vinden dan bij hem.

Your heart can find fulfillment nowhere else but in him.

Dit is het antwoord.

This is the answer.

Dit is het antwoord op die leegte die jij altijd hebt ervaren.

This is the answer to the emptiness you have always experienced.

Je bent namelijk niet gemaakt om vervulling te vinden.

You are not made to find fulfillment.

In wat dan ook.

In anything.

Buiten God.

Outside God.

En het gaat zelfs nog iets verder.

And it even goes a bit further.

Want stel dat je bijvoorbeeld vervulling probeert te vinden in je relatie met je man of vrouw of je vriend of vriendin.

Because let's say you are trying to find fulfillment in your relationship with your husband or wife or your boyfriend or girlfriend.

Laat me je dan dit zeggen.

Let me say this to you then.

Dan ga je die ander kapot maken.

Then you'll break that other one.

Want je gaat iets verlangen van die ander wat die ander nooit kan waarmaken.

Because you are going to desire something from that other person that they can never fulfill.

Die ander kan alleen maar falen.

The other one can only fail.

Die kan jou alleen maar teleurstellen.

That can only disappoint you.

Die kan uiteindelijk alleen maar met hangende pootjes afdruipen.

In the end, they can only leave with their tails between their legs.

Niet omdat die ander niet goed genoeg is, maar omdat jij iets verlangt van die ander wat alleen God jou geven kan.

Not because the other is not good enough, but because you desire something from the other that only God can give you.

Mozes zegt, als u niet met ons meegaat heer, als we uw aanwezigheid moeten verliezen, dan blijf ik liever in de woestijn.

Moses says, if you do not go with us, Lord, if we have to lose your presence, then I would rather stay in the desert.

Want een woestijn met God is een miljoen keer beter dan een beloofd land, een paradijs zonder God.

For a desert with God is a million times better than a promised land, a paradise without God.

En ik hoop dat er heel veel mensen zijn die kunnen zeggen amen.

And I hope that there are many people who can say amen.

Dit is wat Mozes tegen God zegt.

This is what Moses says to God.

Maar hij zegt dat op een hele speciale plek.

But he says that in a very special place.

Er staat namelijk in de tekst die we net lazen, dat Mozes een tent heeft opgezet ver buiten het kamp.

It says in the text we just read that Moses set up a tent far outside the camp.

Op ruime afstand staat er.

It stands at a considerable distance.

Waarom?

Why?

Omdat we net gezien hebben, omdat God zelf niet in dat kamp kan komen.

Because we just saw, because God Himself cannot enter that camp.

Daarom zegt Mozes, dan laat ik je niet in de tent gaan.

Therefore, Moses says, then I will not let you go into the tent.

Daarom zegt Mozes.

That's why Moses says.

Dan laat ik dat kamp waar al die afgode reizig heeft afgespeeld en al die zonde vandaan komt, dat laat ik achter mij en dan zoek ik God op buiten het kamp.

Then I will leave that camp where all those idols have taken place and where all that sin comes from, I will leave that behind and then I will seek God outside the camp.

Om hem daar te ontmoeten.

To meet him there.

En daar zit een belangrijke les in, denk ik, voor ons.

And I think there is an important lesson in that for us.

Want als wij God zoeken, als jij God zoekt en je hart verlangt om hem te kennen en zijn aanwezigheid in je leven te ervaren,

For when we seek God, when you seek God and your heart longs to know Him and experience His presence in your life,

dan betekent dat ook dat je net als Mozes de wereld van zonde de rug toe moet keren.

Then that also means that you, like Moses, must turn your back on the world of sin.

Je kunt niet roepen tot God en zeggen, Heer, ik verlang zoveel meer van uw aanwezigheid in mijn leven,

You cannot call out to God and say, Lord, I desire so much more of your presence in my life,

maar ondertussen vasthouden aan afgode, aan de afgod van geld en bezit, aan de afgod van seks,

but in the meantime holding on to idols, to the idol of money and possessions, to the idol of sex,

aan de afgod van aanzien en eer.

to the idol of prestige and honor.

Je kunt niet roepen, Heer, ik wil meer van u en ondertussen haat blijven.

You cannot cry out, Lord, I want more of You and in the meantime continue to hate.

Je kunt niet koesteren richting iemand anders in je hart.

You cannot cherish feelings for someone else in your heart.

Nee, als je zegt, ik verlang naar meer van God, ik honger en dorst naar God.

No, when you say, I long for more of God, I hunger and thirst for God.

Dan leert dit verhaal ons ook, oké, dan laat je dat kamp achter je.

Then this story also teaches us that, okay, you leave that camp behind.

Then you turn your back on the world, evil, sin.

Dat is eigenlijk ook wat bekering is, hè.

Conversion is simply saying, Lord, I want you and I am willing to leave behind everything that stands between you and me.

Turning one's back.

was dat elke keer dat Mozes aan God iets vroeg, God ja zegt.

Every time Moses asked God something, God said yes.

Mozes nadert tot God in die tent en wat gebeurt er? God daalt af naar Mozes.

Moses approaches God in that tent and what happens? God comes down to Moses.

God is zelfs bereid om tegen Mozes te zeggen, Mozes, ik ga met je mee.

God is even willing to say to Moses, Moses, I will go with you.

En als Mozes dan vraagt, wilt u dat dan ook voor het volk doen, dan zegt God weer ja.

And when Moses then asks, would you do that for the people as well, God again says yes.

En dan aan het eind zegt Mozes, laat me toch uw glorie, uw majesteit zien, Heer.

And then at the end, Moses says, "Let me see your glory, your majesty, Lord."

Ik verlang het te zien.

I long to see it.

En God zegt, oké.

And God says, okay.

Dit hele verhaal laat zien dat God ontzettend gewillig is om degene die hem zoekt tegemoet te komen.

This whole story shows that God is incredibly willing to meet those who seek Him.

Dat God tegen een ieder die zegt, Heer, ik verlang naar u zegt, ik wil dichterbij komen.

That God says to anyone who says, Lord, I long for you, I want to come closer.

Toen Adem en Eva zondigden,

When Adam and Eve sinned,

toen hadden ze zich verstopt.

Then they had hidden themselves.

Ze hoorden God komen in het paradijs en ze doken al bij een struik.

They heard God coming in the paradise and they hid behind a bush.

En dan zegt God, Adem, waar ben je?

And then God says, Adam, where are you?

Het is een hele rare vraag natuurlijk, want God weet en ziet alles.

It is indeed a very strange question, because God knows and sees everything.

God wist precies in welke struik Adem.

God knew exactly which bush Adam was in.

Dat was voor God geen geheim.

That was no secret to God.

Waarom vraagt God dat dan?

Why does God ask that then?

Omdat hij Adem de kans wil geven om zelf uit die struik te komen en naar hem toe te gaan.

Because he wants to give Adam the chance to come out of that bush himself and go to him.

Waarom neemt God afstand van zijn volk?

Why does God distance Himself from His people?

Waarom neemt God misschien op dit moment ook wel afstand van jou?

Why might God also be distancing Himself from you at this moment?

Waarom staat hij nu niet naast je, maar aan het eind van je weg?

Why is he not standing beside you now, but at the end of your path?

Waarom neemt God afstand van je?

Why does God distance Himself from you?

Niet omdat hij jou niet wil, maar omdat hij jou uitnodigt om naar hem toe te komen.

Not because he doesn’t want you, but because he is inviting you to come to him.

Omdat hij verlangt dat jij die stap zet en zegt, ik laat die wereld achter me en ik verlang naar u.

Because he longs for you to take that step and say, I leave that world behind and I long for you.

Het antwoord is ja.

He wants to receive you.

Denk even aan die vader van de verloren zoon.

Just think of that father of the prodigal son.

Die stond zelfs op de uitkijk.

He was even on the lookout.

Alleen dat al spreekt van verlangen.

That alone speaks of desire.

Dat hij zo hoopt en verlangt dat die zoon terug zou keren.

That he hopes and longs for his son to return.

En als die zoon dan komt, dan rent hij hem tegemoet.

And when that son comes, he runs towards him.

Hij neemt hem in zijn armen, hij kust hem.

He takes him in his arms, he kisses him.

Jezus zegt, dat is hoe God is, dat is mijn vader.
