Het is kanker. Wat nu?
8. Een nieuwe toekomst. Hoezo?
Kanker.
Cancer. An unexpected guest knocking at your door.
One that makes your body resist and drives your mind crazy.
This podcast will be about fear, unrest, chemotherapy, and death.
But also about hope, the loving support of people.
and the many forms of zest for life after a cancer diagnosis.
Ik ben Yamina Krossa van het VUB Yamina Krossa Fonds voor Kankeronderzoek.
I am Yamina Krossa from the VUB Yamina Krossa Fund for Cancer Research.
Nadat Tine Maanhout en Sylvia Brouwers het boek schreven
After Tine Maanhout and Sylvia Brouwers wrote the book
Het is kanker, wat nu?
It is cancer, what now?
I invited them to be hosts of this podcast.
This podcast could be made possible thanks to the warm and valuable collaboration.
van het VUB Yamina Krossa Fonds en de AFAS Foundation.
from the VUB Yamina Krossa Fund and the AFAS Foundation.
Dat waren twee bijzondere perspectieven.
Those were two special perspectives.
Yes, it was very nice to have the two ladies together in our studio.
A scientist and a young person who can talk about the future.
als het over kanker gaat.
when it comes to cancer.
It was really nice and impressive to hear them at work.
Ja, inderdaad.
Yes, indeed.
Because in the following episode we are allowed to talk about the future.
Wat betekent dat eigenlijk?
What does that actually mean?
Scientists and researchers are working hard on this.
aan nieuwe manieren om kanker te bestrijden.
to new ways to combat cancer.
Chemotherapie, immuuntherapie.
Chemotherapy, immunotherapy.
But today we focus on a particularly special future remedy.
Vaccins tegen kanker.
Vaccines against cancer.
And thanks to this ongoing evolution in scientific research, people like Tine,
and I, along with many others, really still have a future.
That is why we have two special guests with us today.
Professor dokter Damya Lawi, een onderzoekster.
Professor Doctor Damya Lawi, a researcher.
En Kiana, 17 jaar en herstellend van lymfeklierkanker.
And Kiana, 17 years old and recovering from lymphoma.
Nog even wat meer over deze gasten.
A little more about these guys.
Professor Dr. Damya Lawi obtained a PhD in biomedical engineering from the VUB.
Together with a dedicated team, she investigates how certain cells can influence the immune system.
to drastically reduce the chance of relapse.
Dat is als het ware een kankervaccin.
That is essentially a cancer vaccine.
In that context, she finds dendritic cells to be the coolest cells in our body.
Dat mag ze ons zo meteen even uitleggen.
She can explain that to us in a moment.
In addition to being a researcher, she is also a mother of two children and sometimes has to leave her lab to find funding.
om dit belangrijke onderzoek te financieren.
to finance this important research.
Onder andere via het VUB Yamina Crossa Fonds.
Among others through the VUB Yamina Crossa Fund.
We will explain later how you, as a listener, can also support.
Kiana is now 16 years old and was diagnosed with lymphoma at the age of 15.
For several months now, her chemotherapy has ended and she can think about the future again.
Organization, reception, and sales are being studied in her penultimate year.
Haar grote passie is motocross. Hoe cool is dat?
Her big passion is motocross. How cool is that?
And her illness gives her a strong desire to actually get involved with young people and cancer.
Absoluut. Geniet van het gesprek.
She definitely has to do it, after we've heard her. Absolutely. Enjoy the conversation.
Dag Damia, dag Kiana.
Hello Damia, hello Kiana. Welcome to our last episode of this series.
Also Tine again. Nice that you are back too.
Let's get started with the question we ask everyone.
The international symbol for cancer is the crab.
Damia, met welk dier zou jij kanker vergelijken?
Damia, which animal would you compare cancer to?
Ik vergelijk het eigenlijk met een skorpioen.
I actually compare it to a scorpion.
Ik heb al veel skorpioenen gezien.
I have seen many scorpions.
En skorpioenen die kruipen zo op jou.
And scorpions crawl right up to you.
And you can keep that on your body for a long time.
And at one moment they will sting you.
And then there is actually little time to do anything about it.
You still have that time, but at some point it will be too late.
And then it's like what can happen with cancer, if you're too late.
Mooie vergelijking.
Nice comparison.
Dat vind jij niet ook. Ja, het is ook zo.
You don't think so either. Yes, that's right.
En jij Kiana?
And you, Kiana?
Ik zou gaan voor een kogelvis.
I would go for a pufferfish.
Die kunnen zich heel scherp opstellen.
They can be very sharp in their approach.
But they are actually very toxic on the inside.
And I think that's actually what cancer is too.
Because you don't know what is happening in your body right now.
And that's why it is so important to continue effectively researching what your cancer actually is.
Om onderzoek te blijven doen.
To continue conducting research.
Damia, we already talked about dendritic cells and research in the introduction.
Can you briefly explain to us what you do with your team?
Yes, so we actually work on the immune system.
We are trying to understand how the cells of your immune system actually interact with cancer cells and with the other cells of the immune system.
And it is actually the case that in a tumor you have cancer cells, but you also have cells from your immune system that come in to try to find and destroy the cancer cells.
And the dendritic cell, that is the nicest cell, it is actually the one that has to recognize everything that is foreign in your body.
So it enters your tumor and it will recognize the cancer cells.
And it will actually record a small piece of that and give it to the soldiers.
De soldaten, dat zijn de T-cellen.
The soldiers, those are the T-cells.
And those soldiers with that information will then be able to kill the cancer cells.
And in the past, before we started that research, it was generally believed that most dendritic cells were actually bad and helped cancer cells.
Some of those cells will do that as well, but a large part will also help combat real cancer cells.
And so we actually want to use those cells as a kind of therapy.
Dus het idee is...
So the idea is...
Suppose we have a patient with, let's say, a lung tumor or a breast tumor.
We will remove that tumor from the breast, and it will be done surgically by the doctor.
From that tumor, we can then extract the good dendritic cells.
They take the information from the cancer cells and then we inject it back into the same patient.
And those dendritic cells will actually be able to travel to all places in the body where there may already be metastases that the doctor has not yet discovered.
And they can actually elicit a memory response, just like with a classic vaccine.
That will ensure that the patient will not relapse.
But I say patient, for now it works in mice and we are not yet in the patient stage.
If I understand correctly, it means that you actually first have a tumor in order to reduce the chance of relapse or metastasis.
That is what you are looking for.
So it is not a vaccine against getting cancer, but yes, against recurrence, metastasis.
What is also very important is that actually 90%...
...of the patients die from relapse and metastases and not from getting the initial tumor.
Dus inderdaad, erg belangrijk onderzoek.
So indeed, very important research.
And we understand the stage, we are at the stage where we are testing on mice.
We have understood that the results are very positive.
Wanneer kunnen we het bij mensen...
When can we do it with people...
Dat is een beetje een strikvraag.
That's a bit of a trick question.
Want ja, onderzoek zoals jullie misschien weten, gaat in het algemeen traag.
Well, research, as you may know, generally goes slowly.
Ook al werken we keihard.
Even though we work extremely hard.
So we now have the data we need.
De pre-klinische data, dus de muisdata.
The pre-clinical data, so the mouse data.
And now we actually need to gather everything together from quality controls and so on.
Om eigenlijk een etische goedkeuring te krijgen.
To actually obtain ethical approval.
And we hope that we will be there by the 26th, 27th.
But then there is also a major condition.
That we also get the money together to start a first clinical study.
En daar zijn we nu nog niet.
And we are not there yet.
We do receive a lot of help, including from the VUB Yamina-Crosa fund.
So Yamina is doing everything to gather the amount needed.
But we hope that there will naturally still be many donations for the fund.
That we can indeed start treating the first patients once we are done with the ethical fuss.
And if I understand it correctly, this treatment will actually also ensure that in some cases...
Or actually, in many cases of relapse, perhaps chemotherapy should no longer be administered.
Because our body already knows that there is something I need to fight, and our soldiers are ready to fight.
Ja, dat is echt het doel.
Yes, that is really the goal.
To ensure that you no longer have to undergo the side effects of conventional therapy.
Ja, dat zal jij waarschijnlijk graag horen Kiana.
Yes, you will probably like to hear that, Kiana.
Because one of the side effects is hair loss from chemotherapy.
Wat denk je als je dit hoort?
What do you think when you hear this?
Ik denk dat er heel veel kinderen...
I think that there are many children...
...mee blij gemaakt gaan worden.
...going to be made happy.
You still have a disease that is fighting in your body.
But I think hair loss, if that didn't happen, would make a lot of miracles happen.
Dat bestrijdt de onzekerheid wel een beetje.
That does alleviate the uncertainty a bit.
Ja, zeker inderdaad. We gaan het er nog over hebben.
Yes, indeed. We will talk about it further.
But if you are indeed younger, at what age, all those side effects can be quite tough.
So it is super important that we can get our own body to work indeed.
Ja.
Yes.
What has driven you to actually enter that cancer research with that passion?
It's not really a fun topic to work on.
No, for me it was really originally just out of interest.
So I find the human body in general fascinating how it works.
If you think that right now you have I don't know how many cells in your body that are all interacting with each other.
Without you knowing it, without you having to do anything for it.
And it really is about the interest in how those cells work rather than actually fighting cancer.
That was my first, yes, the reason why I started with it.
But of course, I have increasingly come into contact with people who are suffering from cancer.
People who die from cancer. I lost my father to cancer.
And then you also have the feeling that what we do is not only cool, but also useful.
And that also helps to motivate people to stay super motivated to pull all-nighters.
To ensure that we hopefully one day can save people.
Yes, indeed, because such research does require a lot of energy.
As you say, staying up all night, also the fundraising that naturally comes with it.
Where do you get the energy to keep going day in and day out?
Yes, a large part of my team. So I have a really fun team of young people.
Die allemaal gemotiveerd zijn, allemaal anders zijn.
All of whom are motivated, all of whom are different.
And all contribute something to really, yes really a super fun group, a large group of people.
I also draw my energy from the patients.
Dus wij spreken regelmatig met patiënten.
So we regularly speak with patients.
And they also ensure that we know why we have to keep doing it.
And then there are also people, for example like Yamina Corsa.
That keeps giving us hope that we will make it thanks to the funding.
And yes, I also get energy from my environment, my partner, my children.
They sometimes say, oh mom, you are doing well.
Even if they don't fully understand what I do.
But yes, I am supported by a large community around me.
Yes, and I also suspect the results that are actually there.
Which means you know we are on the right track in our research.
Yes, and all the small results also contribute something.
So every day there is someone in my team conducting an experiment.
That something discovered can all be not fun.
And that can validate or counter the hypothesis.
But at that moment, you also have something every day that you know about, we've discovered this now.
And no one else in the world knows that.
And that also gives a kind of energy.
That will ensure that my passion grows even stronger.
Gewoon om die kleine ontdekkingen.
Just for those little discoveries.
But it's quite special that you say, no one in the world knows that.
Dus jij doet hier onderzoek dat internationaal uniek is.
So you are conducting research here that is internationally unique.
Ja, maar dat is eigenaar onderzoek. Dat is bij elke onderzoeker zo.
Yes, but that is owner research. That is the case with every researcher.
Yes, but it concerns a very important vaccine.
If that happens, it will be very impressive.
Zeker en vast, ja.
Sure and certain, yes.
Where do you think the future lies in cancer research?
In general, I think the future is really going towards personalized therapies.
So therapies that are personalized for each patient.
So now we also have many more technologies to really look at what a specific patient's tumor looks like.
What does the immune system of that patient look like?
To then know, okay, that patient actually needs this.
Misschien in combinatie met dit.
Maybe in combination with this.
But what often happens now is that we know that this kind of cancer is likely to benefit from that chemotherapy.
But sometimes that works, sometimes it doesn't.
Soms moet je wachten op de resultaten.
Sometimes you have to wait for the results.
If you give something else then you lose time.
Voor bepaalde patiënten is er geen tijd.
For certain patients, there is no time.
So I do think we will really evolve towards personal therapies.
En ook naar combinatietherapieën.
And also to combination therapies.
Combinatie als in?
Combination as in?
Bijvoorbeeld verschillende soorten immuuntherapieën.
For example, different types of immunotherapies.
We are working with a cell therapy involving dendritic cells.
But they can also strengthen it, for example in certain tumors, where it might not work super well.
With antibodies, which are small proteins that can make those dendritic cells even stronger.
Or possibly in certain cancers where chemotherapy works very well.
Die dan te combineren met andere immuuntherapieën.
Which can then be combined with other immunotherapies.
For example, to be able to reduce the dose of chemotherapy and such.
Ja, oké.
Yes, okay.
Again hopeful indeed, that we are a bit less with the poison there...
Al raak ik me dan af.
Even if I lose myself.
We krijgen dan nieuwe soorten medicatie, nieuwe combinaties.
We will then get new types of medication, new combinations.
Do you expect a reaction from the body again?
Om daar toch weer sluipwegen te vinden?
To find ways to get around it again?
Dat hangt er vanaf.
That depends.
Van welke soort therapie?
Of what kind of therapy?
Bijvoorbeeld met onze celtherapie.
For example, with our cell therapy.
Those are actually cells that were already in your body.
Oké.
Okay.
So your body was actually already used to having those cells there.
So if you take that out and input it again.
Which prevents it from being suppressed by the tumor anymore.
Ja, je lichaam vindt die cellen oké.
Yes, your body thinks those cells are fine.
Want die heeft zichzelf aangemaakt.
Because it created itself.
And so we expect much fewer side effects with certain therapies.
Oké.
Okay.
In a previous conversation, we spoke with a voter.
She works as a nurse in the oncology department.
And she said yes, there are often patients who come to us for many years.
Omdat er zoveel mogelijk is.
Because there is so much possible.
Do you see cancer evolving into something like a chronic disease as well?
Yes, I think that will be the case for a number of cancers.
Ideaal voor alle kankers.
Ideal for all cancers.
But yes, that is already the case for many types of prostate cancer, for example.
Dat mensen prostaatkanker krijgen.
That people get prostate cancer.
Ze geraken er vanaf.
They get away with it.
En soms komt het terug.
And sometimes it comes back.
But in itself, they won't die from it.
And then we say they died with prostate cancer and not from prostate cancer.
Hopefully, we will find therapies that will stop it completely.
Zonder dat het chronisch wordt.
Without it becoming chronic.
But I think that for some cancers it could become a chronic disease.
Eerder dan echt een dodelijke ziekte.
Rather than a truly deadly disease.
Maar waarschijnlijk niet voor alle soorten kankers.
But probably not for all types of cancer.
Want wij spreken vaak over kanker.
Because we often talk about cancer.
But cancer is a collection of more than two hundred types of diseases.
Die elk andere therapieën nodig hebben.
Those who need other therapies.
So out of those two hundred, there will probably be some.
Probably the larger one, for which a lot of research has been done.
Die chronisch zullen worden.
That will become chronic.
Maar er zullen kankers, zoals pancreascanker.
But there will be cancers, such as pancreatic cancer.
Dat blijft een hele moeilijke.
That remains a very difficult one.
And it will take much longer before we can talk about a chronic illness there.
Why is that actually a difficult cancer?
Waarom verschilt dat zo?
Why does that differ so much?
Ja, het is heel moeilijk.
Yes, it is very difficult.
Er is...
There is...
Het is een moeilijk orgaan.
It is a difficult organ.
Er is heel veel heterogeniteit.
There is a lot of heterogeneity.
Dus heel veel verschillen in de soorten kankercellen per patiënt.
So there are many differences in the types of cancer cells per patient.
Maar waarom exact?
But why exactly?
That's actually something I don't know well.
We also do not work on that type of cancer.
Because there are no good mouse models for that either.
But yes, often that has to do with low infiltration of your immune cells.
So that your immune cells do not get activated.
And what if all those cancer cells are different each time?
Of verschillende mutaties hebben.
Or have different mutations.
Then they can also become resistant to certain therapies more quickly.
But it still remains a bit of a black box.
Waar we nog niet zoveel van weten.
Where we don't know much about yet.
Maak ik een juiste vergelijking?
Am I making a correct comparison?
Als je zegt er zijn 200 verschillende ziektes.
If you say there are 200 different diseases.
Can I compare that a bit with the flu and flu vaccines, for example?
Where you also have so many variants with the flu.
And that in your vaccine you can actually address a number of variants as well.
Yes, but it is even more separated.
You could say, it is like all viral infections.
Where you could compare flu with COVID.
Maar ook met HIV.
But also with HIV.
They have absolutely nothing to do with each other as diseases.
Apart from the fact that they come from a virus.
Do I then also understand, for example, that there are tumor cancers?
Waar jullie dan mee bezig zijn.
What you are working on.
Do you see it in the context of vaccines as well?
Want Kiana, jij hebt lymfeklierkanker gehad.
Because Kiana, you have had lymphoma.
Dat is eigenlijk geen tumorkanker.
That is actually not a tumor cancer.
That's more of a blood cancer, if I may say so.
Do you also see an evolution towards vaccines there?
So for now we are indeed working on those solid tumors.
But I have now started a study with people from UZ Brussels.
Die werken op multiple myeloom.
They work on multiple myeloma.
Dus dat is eigenlijk een beenmergkanker.
So that is actually a bone marrow cancer.
Where the cancer cells are located in the bone marrow.
Dus ook gelijkaardig aan een bloedkanker.
So also similar to a blood cancer.
And that is what we are looking at now as well.
How we can make our therapy work even in non-solid tumors.
So the intention is indeed for us to include as many patients as possible.
Ja, ja, amai.
Yes, yes, wow.
That is itself something hopeful, right Kiana?
Natuurlijk, ja.
Of course, yes.
Do you see any other developments in cancer research?
Of in de westerse geneeskunde rond kanker?
Or in Western medicine around cancer?
Yes, we don't always talk about it.
Want we spreken vaak over kankerbehandelingen.
Because we often talk about cancer treatments.
But we know that 35 to 40 percent of cancers
are actually related to the way we live.
So I think, often someone says that in order not to die of cancer, you also shouldn't get cancer.
Of course, in 60 percent of the cases, you can't do anything about it at all.
En heb je gewoon, ofwel leven.
And you just have, or live.
And you simply inherited bad genes.
Ofwel heb je gewoon pech.
Or you just have bad luck.
That when you divide cells, because our cells are constantly dividing,
that a mistake occurs and then you get cancer.
But in 40 percent of the cases, you or society can do something about it.
And then it started to take on a different life, but also prevention.
That we can ensure that we can also detect cancer much faster.
And when we talk about living differently,
de klassieke dingen dat de mensen weten,
the classic things that people know,
Smoking and lung cancer, there is a huge direct link.
Dus niet meer roken.
So no more smoking.
We as a society ensure that smoking becomes nearly impossible or unaffordable.
Yes, pollution is also something that as a society,
you as a person cannot do much about that,
maar wel als maatschappij.
but as a society.
Yes, there are now many more skin cancer cases in Belgium, for example.
dan een tiental jaar geleden.
than about ten years ago.
Blijkbaar heeft dat te maken,
Apparently that has to do with,
it is not yet certain why that is,
but does it have to do with the fact that we go on short vacations more quickly?
in het buitenland,
abroad,
which means we then have an untraveled skin
plots keiveel zonnestralen krijgen.
lots of sunshine rays get.
But also something that is now receiving more and more attention.
is het voedingspatroon.
is the dietary pattern.
So there is a huge link between obesity and cancer.
Dus er zijn heel veel correlatiestudies.
So there are very many correlation studies.
Maar om echt het mechanisme te begrijpen,
But to truly understand the mechanism,
daar zijn we nog niet heel ver.
We are not very far along yet.
What we know is that fat cells release hormones.
En die hormonen kunnen wel,
And those hormones can,
dat zijn groeihormonen,
those are growth hormones,
ensure that the cancer cells will multiply much more.
Dus die vetcellen gaan ervoor zorgen
So those fat cells will ensure
that if you have a very small tumor,
dat je veel sneller kanker kan krijgen,
that you can get cancer much faster,
alleen een grotere tumor kunt krijgen.
you can only get a larger tumor.
En als je dikker bent,
And if you are thicker,
then you actually have a kind of constant inflammation too
in je lichaam.
in your body.
En hoe meer geïnflameerd je lichaam is,
And the more inflamed your body is,
ook hoe sneller je kanker kan ontwikkelen.
also how quickly you can develop cancer.
Ja, inflammatieontstekingen bedoel je?
Yes, you mean inflammatory inflammations?
Een soort ontstekingen.
A kind of inflammation.
Ja, een globale ontstekingsreactie.
Yes, a global inflammatory response.
That's why we say, eat vegetables and fruit.
Daar zitten zo'n antioxidanten in
There are such antioxidants in there.
die je inflammatie gaan dempen.
that will reduce your inflammation.
Ik ga toch even, want ik weet Kiana,
I'm going to go for a bit, because I know Kiana,
dat jij jezelf eigenlijk heel lang,
that you actually for a very long time,
of misschien nog altijd een beetje,
or maybe still a little bit,
die waarom-vraag stelt.
that asks the why question.
Waarom heb ik kanker gekregen?
Why did I get cancer?
Als je Damia hoort, denk je van,
When you hear Damia, you think of,
Okay, there's part of the answer.
dan breekt er nog iets.
then something breaks.
Nee, ik wil, ja,
No, I want, yes,
waarom zou ik het gekregen hebben?
Why would I have received it?
Ondanks mijn omstandigheden heb ik,
Despite my circumstances, I have,
voor ik ziek werd,
before I got sick,
heel gezond geleefd.
lived very healthily.
Maar dan, zoals je zei,
But then, as you said,
60 of 40% kan er niets aan doen,
60 of 40% can't be helped.
en dan ook weer wel.
and then again yes.
But why did I get it then?
Wel, waarschijnlijk
Well, probably
ben jij in de categorie
are you in the category
van de 60% mensen
of the 60% people
waar je er niets aan kunt doen,
what you can't help.
waar je ook niet per se,
where you don't necessarily,
in die 60% heb je dan iets van een 5%,
In that 60%, you then have something like 5%.
where you have no inheritance from your parents,
that will not be the case for you either.
Maar dan heb je een grote,
But then you have a big,
het grootste meerdeel van de patiënten,
the vast majority of the patients,
is gewoon pech.
It's just bad luck.
That is very hard to say to patients.
dat je daar niets aan kunt doen.
that you can do nothing about it.
And I also have in one of my colleagues
een persoon van 27 jaar
a 27-year-old person
die keiveel sport, keigezond eet,
that a lot of sports, eat super healthy,
of meditatie doet,
or meditation does,
echt supergezond leeft,
really super healthy lives,
die heeft nu een keizwaren kanker,
he now has terminal cancer,
en dat is ook zo waarom,
and that is also why,
dat is gewoon pech,
that's just bad luck,
en daar kunnen heel weinig aan doen.
and there is very little they can do about it.
And that is, of course, a very natural reaction,
wij hebben ons die vraag ook gesteld,
we have also asked ourselves that question,
waarom ik, waarom niet,
why me, why not,
But indeed, sometimes you do have bad luck too.
Yes, because it is something that we as a society
wel waaraan kunnen sleutelen.
Well, what can we tinker with?
I have also understood that stress is also a factor.
It may be that we really live at 18 years old, maybe.
dus er is dan toch wel
so there is indeed
een belangrijke boodschap voor ons allemaal.
An important message for us all.
Ja, dat heb ik inderdaad ook gehoord,
Yes, I have indeed heard that as well.
so that research into what we can do,
which treatments, but there is all that aspect of prevention,
waar toch ook nog wel
where there still is
echt een sleutel zit om die,
there's really a key on it,
het aantal gevallen te
the number of cases to
te verkleinen.
to reduce.
Ja, te verkleinen inderdaad.
Yes, indeed to reduce.
And of course, I also had, because there were
onlangs cijfers uitgekomen dat we,
recent figures released that we,
wat was het, in 2050,
what was it, in 2050,
hoeveel, 75, nee,
how much, 75, no,
35 miljoen gevallen van
35 million cases of
kanker, nu dat heeft ook ergens,
cancer, now that has its place too,
that was disturbing, but on the other hand, that also
ergens te maken met...
somewhere related to...
Yes, so that is a global figure, around the world.
And so actually, as you break that figure down,
is het zo dat tegen 2050
Is it true that by 2050
zal er in Europa
will there be in Europe
een stijging zijn van ongeveer
an increase of approximately
30 à 35%
30 to 35%
meer kankers, die waarschijnlijk te maken
more cancers, which are likely related
hebben aan onze levenswijze, dus voedingspatroon,
have to our lifestyle, so diet,
blootstelling aan de zon,
exposure to the sun,
maar dan heb je ook in andere
but then you also have in other
werelddelen, bijvoorbeeld in Afrika, is er een
continents, for example in Africa, there is one
stijging verwacht van 110%,
increase expected of 110%,
and that simply has to do with the fact that
door het feit dat de mensen
due to the fact that people
daar minder gaan overlijden aan andere ziektes,
there will die less from other diseases,
en langer gaan kunnen blijven leven.
and be able to live longer.
En eigenlijk, als ik zeg...
And actually, when I say...
De ouderdomskanker...
The age-related cancer...
It just said there that you can get cancer due to bad luck.
hoe langer je leeft,
the longer you live,
the more chance you have at the moment
pech te krijgen.
to get unlucky.
And so, actually, a human being, it is very strange to say,
maar wij mensen zijn niet gemaakt om
but we humans are not made to
veel ouder te worden dan
much older than
40, 45 jaar, biologisch gezien.
40, 45 years, biologically speaking.
Wij zijn gemaakt
We are made.
zoals...
such as...
De dieren, zoals wij zijn dieren,
The animals, just like us, are animals.
wij zijn eigenlijk gemaakt om ons
we are actually made to be ourselves
for planting, to preserve the species,
and after that, there is actually no function anymore.
voor ons. Wij kunnen denken,
for us. We can think,
dus we hebben heel veel andere functies,
so we have many other functions,
but our body is not really suited for that
voorbereid. En dus ouder worden,
prepared. And so getting older,
ja, houdt in dat je dan ook
yes, that means you also
veel meer kans krijgt op kanker.
has a much higher chance of getting cancer.
En wat is de verhouding
And what is the ratio?
nieuwe kankers en herval?
new cancers and relapse?
Hoeveel mensen hervallen er dan?
How many people relapse then?
Ja...
Yes...
Dat is een moeilijke vraag,
That is a difficult question,
want die cijfers, dat is prognostisch.
because those numbers, that is prognostic.
So we actually don't know how that will go.
evolueren.
evolve.
Maar dat is weer heel kankerafhankelijk.
But that is very dependent on cancer again.
En ook wanneer dat je
And also when that you
het kan detecteren.
it can detect.
Because if you detect it too late, then you die.
Dan ga je niet kunnen genezen
Then you will not be able to heal.
en hervallen. Het is een beetje, ja,
and relapse. It is a bit, yes,
a strange way to put it,
but for now it is very difficult to
daar zo'n cijfers op te plakken.
to stick such numbers on it.
Dus ik hoor eigenlijk dat we inderdaad
So I actually hear that we indeed
door onze evolutie, we worden ouder
through our evolution, we grow older
enzovoort, zijn er een aantal kankers
and so on, there are a number of cancers
waar we waarschijnlijk toch moeten,
where we probably have to anyway,
zullen moeten doormaken.
will have to go through.
On the other hand, we can do something about our lifestyle.
om dat cijfer toch inderdaad
to indeed confirm that figure
laag genoeg te houden.
to keep it low enough.
Zie jij andere
Do you see others?
ziektes, want dat zijn grote getallen
diseases, because those are large numbers
als we het over kanker hebben,
when we talk about cancer,
do you see other diseases that are actually cancer like
een dodelijke ziekte zal gaan vervangen
a deadly disease will be replaced
with all the research we are doing now?
Ja, dat hangt een beetje
Yes, that hangs a bit.
af ook van waar in de wereld.
and also from wherever in the world.
We zien in
We see in
de Verenigde Staten bijvoorbeeld
the United States for example
waar de mensen nog sneller
where people are even faster
getting fatter. This is also the case in Asia now.
Door
Door
goede welzijn van de maatschappij gaan de
the good well-being of society goes the
mensen ook meer vlees beginnen eten,
people are also starting to eat more meat,
minder bewegen, waardoor ze dikker worden.
moving less, which makes them thicker.
Hart- en vaatziekten is iets
Cardiovascular diseases are something
dat misschien
that maybe
kanker zal blijven.
cancer will remain.
Ja, hoe zeg je dat?
Yes, how do you say that?
Overtreffen. Overtreffen
Surpass. Surpass.
in het aantal dodelijke cijfers.
in the number of fatalities.
Yes, I hope that is not the case either.
Maar we hopen gewoon dat alle ziektes
But we just hope that all diseases
daar beneden gaan, maar
go down there, but
het is moeilijk om te voorspellen
it is difficult to predict
wat er komt. We weten ook niet
what is to come. We do not know either.
welke virusinfecties er
which virus infections there
te wachten staan voor de komende jaren.
to be expected in the coming years.
Dat is heel moeilijk te bepalen.
That is very difficult to determine.
Hoe werken jullie,
How do you work?
en je verwijst inderdaad ook vaak
and you do indeed refer often as well
naar andere wereldtelen,
to other continents,
waar misschien eventueel verschillen zitten,
where there may possibly be differences,
hoe werken jullie bijvoorbeeld samen met
how do you work together with
onderzoekers in die andere gebieden
researchers in those other areas
om elkaar te voeden daarin?
to nourish each other in that?
Ja, dus wij proberen elkaar
Yes, so we try to help each other.
te leren kennen. Vaak
to get to know. Often
is dat op congressen. Dus om de
is that at conferences. So to the
zoveel maanden gaan wij
how many months are we going
op internationale congressen,
at international conferences,
dus in verschillende delen van de wereld.
so in different parts of the world.
Waardoor we dan
Which is why we then
in contact komen met mensen die
to get in touch with people who
eigenlijkzelfde soorten
actually the same types
onderzoeken doen. Dus ik ben heel geïnteresseerd
conducting research. So I am very interested.
in congressen die gaan over dendritische cellen
in conferences that are about dendritic cells
of over immuuntherapie.
or over immunotherapy.
Is there a congress about dendritic cells?
Should I really introduce myself in what you...
Bijvoorbeeld in september is er in
For example, in September there is in
Spanje het
Spain it
tweejaarlijks groot congres over dendritische cellen.
biennial large conference on dendritic cells.
But that doesn't necessarily only concern
kanker. Dus daar is wel een sessie over
cancer. So there is indeed a session about that.
cancer, but also about dendritic cells in other diseases.
But you can also learn something there sometimes.
En dus ja, dan
And so yes, then
proberen we soms ook funding
sometimes we also try for funding
te halen om samen projecten te doen.
to bring together to work on projects together.
Je probeert
You are trying.
ook te kijken van wie wat doet.
also to see who does what.
En idealiter werken
And ideally work
samen. Soms worden dat concurrenten.
together. Sometimes they become competitors.
Dat hangt er ook van af.
That depends as well.
Als dat onderzoekers zijn in een
If those are researchers in a
academische setting of in de industrie.
academic setting or in the industry.
De manier om daarmee
The way to do that
samen te werken is niet altijd dezelfde.
Working together is not always the same.
Hoe verschilt
How does it differ
dat dan? Ja, mensen die in een
that then? Yes, people who are in a
academische setting werken is veel gemakkelijker om
working in an academic setting is much easier to
mee samen te werken. Want dan moet je gewoon zeggen van
to work together. Because then you just have to say that
We do something together and then it is just that way.
With the industry, you have to deal with a lot of things.
drawing and then you do not always have the freedom.
Because they depend on their board or
directors.
directors.
Dus ja, daar heb je minder vrijheid.
So yes, you have less freedom there.
They naturally have a revenue model behind their research.
Ja, zij hebben een strategie.
Yes, they have a strategy.
Ja.
Yes.
Ja, ik spreek liever met
Yes, I prefer to speak with
mensen uit de universiteit.
people from the university.
Yes, because you can really build together there.
Yes, you also have a much greater freedom.
Kijk je soms ook naar
Do you sometimes watch too?
andere domeinen
other domains
outside of the classical medicine in which you are active?
Zo, andere vormen
So, other forms
van geneeskunde, oosterse geneeskunde,
of medicine, eastern medicine,
of zijn er dingen die... Wij zijn daar niet mee bezig.
or are there things that... We're not concerned with that.
Omdat ons domein al zo
Because our domain already is so
groot is.
is big.
Maar dat interesseert
But that interests
mij wel. Dus ik zit ook
me too. So I am sitting as well.
in een aantal commissies van
in a number of committees of
for example, at Come On Against Cancer, I am involved in
de biomedische commissie en soms krijgen
the biomedical committee and sometimes get
we zo van die aanvragen binnen
we receive such requests
and I find it interesting to open ourselves up
stellen tot andere soorten
set to other types
manieren van te genezen of van
ways to heal or of
de kankerpatiënten te kunnen helpen
to be able to help the cancer patients
tijdens de therapie bijvoorbeeld.
during therapy, for example.
But I'm not dealing with it myself.
Onderzoek,
Research,
heel veel geld, maar echt
a lot of money, but really
zo ongelooflijk belangrijk.
so incredibly important.
Jij bent zelf ook heel...
You are also very...
I know that of course you have the VUB.
Jamina Crossa Fonds hebt. Er zijn ook fondsen...
You have a Jamina Crossa Fund. There are also funds...
Allee, mensen die fondsen werven
Come on, people who raise funds.
aan de VUB verbonden zelf.
associated with the VUB itself.
You also spend a lot of time on that yourself.
Is er daar iets wat
Is there something there that
er zou moeten veranderen eigenlijk om
there should actually be a change to
dat wat te vergemakkelijken?
to facilitate that?
Ja, het is heel het onderzoeksmodel dat
Yes, it is the entire research model that
een beetje... Dat niet perfect in elkaar
a little... Not perfectly put together
zit. Want het is zo dat
sit. Because it is such that
als je prof wordt
if you become a professor
dan ga je een team
then you will have a team
rond jou proberen te krijgen.
trying to get around you.
Maar die mensen moeten betaald worden.
But those people have to be paid.
Dus die kunnen soms een eigen
So they can sometimes have their own
grant krijgen, een doctoraatsbeurs
to receive a grant, a doctoral scholarship
bijvoorbeeld. Maar je hebt
for example. But you have
werkingsgeld nodig. Wij moeten onze
operating funds needed. We need our
producten kopen en dat
buying products and that
is eigenlijk het koste van het geld.
is actually the cost of the money.
Maar dus als prof moet
But as a professor, you must...
je een project schrijven om te
write a project to
zeggen van dit is mijn idee. En dan moet je
saying this is my idea. And then you have to
showing why it's such a cool idea.
Omdat dat een nuttig idee is.
Because it is a useful idea.
En dat wordt beoordeeld door andere
And that is assessed by others.
onderzoekers die je idee beoordelen.
researchers who assess your idea.
Maar ook je cv.
But also your resume.
To see if that person can do it.
Ja. En dus moet
Yes. And so must
je eigenlijk ervoor zorgen dat je
you actually make sure that you
dat idee zo snel mogelijk ontwikkelt.
that idea develops as quickly as possible.
Dat je een publicatie krijgt.
That you receive a publication.
En zodat die publicatie ervoor
And so that publication for it
zorgt dat je cv goed blijft.
ensures that your CV stays good.
And are you actually always in a very competitive environment?
model.
model.
En hoe meer publicaties
And the more publications
the more ideas you get,
the more team members you have, the more
geld dat je nodig hebt. Dus hoe meer grants dat je
money that you need. So the more grants that you
gaat blijven schrijven. En het is eigenlijk
will continue to write. And it is actually
moeilijk om zo...
difficult to do it like this...
Ideaaliter zou je eigenlijk een soort
Ideally, you would actually have a kind of
basisfinanciering krijgen
to receive basic funding
van, ik weet niet, de universiteit.
from, I don’t know, the university.
Dat je zou zeggen van
That you would say of
oké, ik kan zeker telkens twee mensen
Okay, I can definitely take two people each time.
hebben en
have and
niet minimaal onderzoek
not minimal research
voortdoen. En dat de grants eigenlijk
continue. And that the grants actually
de extraatjes zijn.
the extras are.
Het lijkt ook gewoon zo
It just seems that way too.
logisch om zoiets te doen. Je geeft zo
logical to do something like that. You give like this
veel mensen die aan de ziekte,
many people who suffer from the disease,
die met de ziekte te maken krijgen.
those who are affected by the disease.
Hoeveel zou jij nodig hebben per jaar
How much would you need per year?
om gewoon zorgeloos
to just be carefree
te kunnen gewoon je onderzoek doen?
to be able to just do your research?
Yes, but that's a difficult question again.
in de zin van, ik kijk
in the sense of, I look
heel groot, ik heb een groot team.
very big, I have a big team.
Dus ik wil veel doen.
So I want to do a lot.
And we are easily a million, one and a half.
per jaar door het overhand.
per year through the handover.
Wat is dat?
What is that?
You always had to gather in order to be able to.
verder werken.
continue working.
Even op een persoonlijke
Just a personal moment.
note, wat doet
note, what does
de ziekte kanker
the disease cancer
met jou?
with you?
Zelf?
Yourself?
Ja, ik begrijp
Yes, I understand.
het natuurlijk heel goed, hoe dat het
it's very good, how that it
werkt.
works.
En dat maakt mij niet per se
And that doesn't necessarily make me
bang.
scared.
I have many people around me who have cancer.
Ook mensen van mijn leeftijd.
Also people my age.
Maar ja, ofwel ben ik omringd
But yes, either I am surrounded.
door heel sterke mensen die
by very strong people who
looking at life positively, even though there are
natuurlijk mensen die overlijden, maar
of course people who pass away, but
ik ben er niet bang voor.
I'm not afraid of it.
Ik ben ook
I am too.
generally not afraid of death, for example.
Dat is denk ik gewoon een instelling.
I think that's just a setting.
I don't know if that answers your question.
bij ons hoort.
belongs with us.
I think it's healthy to have a certain
afstand te hebben tussen Damia, de

Researcher in her lab, and then privately.
Maar ik spreek wel vaak
But I do speak often.
over wat ik doe tegen mijn kinderen.
about what I do to my children.
En die
And that
zijn er ook niet bang voor, maar
are not afraid of it either, but
die hebben wel zoiets van, als iemand
they kind of have this idea that if someone
Sick is, oh, does he/she not have cancer?
Because they also know what that can do,
because I might be a little too much about that
spreek.
speak.
So yes, they are more involved than I am.
Vinden zij de dendritische cellen
Do they find the dendritic cells?
ook al de coolste ondertussen?
is he also the coolest in the meantime?
Goh, dat weet ik niet.
Gee, I don't know that.
They do know that they are there, but sometimes
they want to act a bit tough and find another cell
cooler om uit te gaan.
cooler to go out.
Het zijn grappige gesprekken bij jullie.
You have funny conversations among you.
Het zit ook aan de keukentafel.
It is also at the kitchen table.
En
And
om dit stukje
about this piece
even af te ronden,
to round off,
Damia, is er hoop voor de toekomst?
Damia, is there hope for the future?
Yes, I think there really is a lot...
If we see where we come from, where we stand now,
is er echt wel
is there really
een enorme vooruitgang geboekt.
made enormous progress.
And sometimes it doesn't seem that way,
omdat er natuurlijk meer mensen kanker krijgen
because of course more people are getting cancer
now, because we have many more older people,
enzovoort. Maar
etc. But
vroeger, als je borstkanker had,
in the past, if you had breast cancer,
dertig jaar geleden,
thirty years ago,
was er niet
was there not
zoveel hoop.
so much hope.
Nu, als je er vroeg bij bent,
Now, if you act early,
then that's two, three years in your life
die moeilijk is.
that is difficult.
Maar kan je soms daarna
But can you sometimes afterwards
terug volledig normaal functioneren
return to full normal functioning
en blijft dat een heel erg slechte
and that remains a very bad
herinnering.
memory.
En ja, de hoop is dat dat zo voor veel
And yes, the hope is that this will be the case for many.
kankers gaat zijn. Maar als we zien
cancers will go. But when we see
hoeveel mensen bezig zijn met onderzoek,
how many people are engaged in research,
in België, in de wereld,
in Belgium, in the world,
elke dag zijn er nieuwe therapieën.
Every day there are new therapies.
Niet altijd efficiënt, maar
Not always efficient, but
er zijn wel elke dag
there are indeed every day
dingen die werken. Dus we
things that work. So we
gaan vooruit.
move forward.
En ik heb veel hoop.
And I have a lot of hope.
Ja, ja. En met wat
Yes, yes. And with what
What you just told me, I don't only have that hope.
Jij vertelt
You tell.
de hoop in de zin
the hope in the sentence
dat de overlevingskansen zoveel
that the chances of survival are so much
enlarge his, but also the therapies that we
beginnen aanbieden, dat die ook minder...
start offering, that it also becomes less...
Ja, de levenskwaliteit.
Yes, the quality of life.
En ik denk dat we bij ons
And I think that we at ours
absoluut ook een heel mooi voorbeeld
absolutely also a very nice example
hebben van wat jouw werk

doet. Want Kiana zit
does. Because Kiana is sitting
bij ons. En het is eigenlijk dankzij dat
with us. And it's actually thanks to that
jarenlange onderzoek
years of research
that you are here with us today as well.
Kiana, that might be very strange to say.
Op...
On...

Can you tell me something for a moment about how that works?
juist gegaan is bij jou? Dat we weten

wat jouw traject daarin is?
what your journey in this is?
Ehm...
Ehm...
Ik ben vorig...
I was last...

We had an ultrasound done, a photo taken, but
daar zagen ze eigenlijk niet zo heel
they didn't really see that well
a lot was going on. They did see that something was there, but
ze konden het niet uitleggen.
They couldn't explain it.
Then we went to the pediatrician and he

And us

You need to go for a check-up there today.

Called, because she was still at work.
En zijn we direct naar Leuven vertrokken.
And we headed straight to Leuven.

investigation done and then they actually have my
biopsie al genomen. En daar
biopsy already taken. And there
zagen ze dat het dan lymfekneerkanker
they saw that it was then lymphatic kidney cancer
was en de Hodgkin versie.

En daar
And there
zeiden ze eigenlijk voor een 15 jaar
they actually said for a 15-year-old
is dat normaal, want
is that normal, because
bij 15-jarigen zou je het
with 15-year-olds, you would say it

That's how they said in Leuven.
En negen op de tien was

had very nice prospects.
Dus van in het begin eigenlijk kunnen

thinking of healing.
Ja.
Yes.
Jij vond het wel,
You thought so,

Participating in a podcast. Not so obvious.
Wat was de reden waarom
What was the reason why
je eigenlijk hier heel graag

wou zijn of toch wou meedoen?
Would he want to be or would he want to join in?
Over kanker

children to be able to do that as well.
But you have noticed that in your surroundings,
bij je vrienden, dat dat
with your friends, that that
it was difficult for them to talk about it.
Ja.
Yes.
Ik heb Julie en Nora leren kennen
I have met Julie and Nora.
dankzij het UZ Leuven. Ik had,
thanks to UZ Leuven. I had,
ik wou heel graag lotgenoten hebben.
I would really like to have peers.
Omdat ik niemand kende daar eigenlijk bij.
Because I didn't actually know anyone there.
En dan heeft het UZ Leuven

contact opgenomen met andere kinderen dan.
contacted other children then.
En Nora en Julie

wilden daaraan meedoen.
wanted to participate in that.
En het UZ Leuven organiseert ook

het kick-off en het ado-kamp.
the kick-off and the ADO camp.
Dus dat is dat we eigenlijk vier dagen

bijvoorbeeld naar de zee gaan of
for example going to the sea or
op een kamp ergens in de zomer.
at a camp somewhere in the summer.

lotgenoten. Ze zijn oftewel al
fellow sufferers. They are either already
genezen, maar binnen
healing, but inside
de twee jaar zeg maar. Of ze zijn nog
the two years let's say. Or they are still
zelfs in behandeling, maar
even in treatment, but
iedereen begrijpt elkaar daar dus.
Everyone understands each other there, then.
Dat is wel heel leuk. Ja, dat had je wel
That's really nice. Yes, you deserved that.
nodig om begrepen te worden. Ja.
necessary to be understood. Yes.
Want jouw leven werd
Because your life became
inderdaad echt helemaal
indeed really completely
op zijn kop gezet. En je bent vijftien jaar.
turned upside down. And you are fifteen years old.
Je bent eigenlijk een opgroeiende
You are actually a growing up.
tiener, met allemaal andere
teenager, with all the others
tieners rondom jou. Gewoon
teenagers around you. Just
even, hoe ging dat dan op school?
So, how did that go at school?
Want inderdaad, wat
Because indeed, what
gebeurde er dan met klasgenoten?
What happened with classmates?
Mijn vorige klas was niet zo
My previous class was not like that.
positief daarin.
positive in that.
Natuurlijk, iedereen had wel medelijnen,
Of course, everyone had their struggles.
maar het was zo, ze namen allemaal
but it was like this, they all took
afstand. Dan heb ik toch
distance. Then I do have
a girl I had, who has always stayed with me.
For example, the first day that I again
naar school ging, droeg
went to school, wore
everyone a hat for me, so that I am not the only one
zou zijn met een mutsje op.
would be wearing a little hat.
So I was already very grateful for that.
Maar dan, meer naar het einde toe,
But then, towards the end,
I also wouldn't go to school anymore because
ik en Mal, we waren redelijk voorzichtig.
Me and Mal, we were quite careful.
Want we wilden geen infectie oplopen,
Because we didn't want to contract an infection,
dus altijd via bednet gevolgd.
so always followed via Bednet.
En toen hebben wij wel gemerkt
And then we did notice.
dat ik drie vierden ben
that I am three quarters
kwijtgeraakt. Van je vrienden?
Lost. From your friends?
Ja. Maar ik denk dat dat ook
Yes. But I think that also
mainly because I didn't go to school
en geen sociaal contact meer heb.
and no longer have social contact.
Dus ik begrijp dat ergens
So I understand that somewhere.
wel, maar
well, but
het is toch moeilijk. Dus dat is inderdaad
it is still difficult. So that is indeed
los van die behandeling
apart from that treatment
waar je doorgaat, is effectief die sociale
where you go on, is effectively that social
isolatie. Dus nogmaals,
insulation. So once again,
how important it is that we from your
onderzoek dan ook, Damia, naar andere
research then also, Damia, into other
oplossingen blijven zoeken. Dat we
continue to seek solutions. That we
ergens, ja, vanuit
somewhere, yes, from
ons eigen lichaam,
our own body,
ja, zeker.
Yes, certainly.
Je
You
also indicated of people, just name something
afstand, wat had je eigenlijk liever gehad
distance, what would you have preferred instead?
dat mensen dan wel deden?
that people would do then?
Vooral
Especially
mij normaal behandelen,
treat me normally,
ook al zie ik er anders uit,
even though I look different,
ook al heb ik een gevecht
even though I have a fight
binnenin mijn lichaam aan de gang,
going on inside my body,
maar je wilt toch hetzelfde zijn als
but you still want to be the same as
iedereen. En je wilt je geen buitenbeentje
everyone. And you don't want to be an outsider
voelen, dus liefst het normaal
feel, so preferably the normal
behandeld worden.
to be treated.
Ja, alsof je Kiana
Yes, like you're Kiana.
van vijftien jaar bent. Ja, de oude Kiana, ja.
you are fifteen years old. Yes, the old Kiana, yes.
Ja.
Yes.
Ik wou ook nog even
I also wanted to...
in een eerdere gesprek
in an earlier conversation
hadden we het ook over
we also talked about it
bij chemotherapie bijvoorbeeld.
for example, during chemotherapy.
Moet je ook eventueel nadenken over
You should also possibly think about
kinderwens enzovoort?
child wish, etc.?
Heb jij dat ook
Do you have that too?
moeten doen? En hoe was
have to do? And how was
dat dan? Ze hebben mij de vraag
What about that? They asked me the question.
gesteld op vijftienjarige leeftijd van
set at the age of fifteen of
stel...
suppose...
Hoe kun je dat dan weten?
How can you know that?
Ja. Ja, knikt.
Yes. Yes, nods.
Hoe is dat mogelijk?
How is that possible?
At the age of fifteen, they asked me that and I was
daar heel van overtuigd dat ik geen
there very convinced that I don't
kinderen zou willen.
would like children.
Maar zoals gezegd, op vijftien jaar
But as mentioned, at fifteen years old
kun je dat echt niet beslissen.
Can you really not decide that?
En dan heb ik dat even uitgesteld
And then I postponed that for a moment.
and then mom and I made an appointment
in Leuven bij de gynaecoloog.
in Leuven at the gynecologist.
Die heeft dan ons extra uitleg gegeven.
That has given us extra explanation.
Moest het
Had to
not working anymore, then I would definitely my
eicel...
egg cell...
Ja, mijn eicellen laten invriezen
Yes, I am freezing my eggs.
voor later. Maar ik
for later. But I
heb dan uiteindelijk... Ze hadden mij vier
I finally had... They had given me four.
kuren gegeven en misschien
given treatments and maybe
nog bestraling achteraf, maar die bestraling is
still radiation afterwards, but that radiation is
not necessary, so then I have too
mijn eicellen niet moeten laten invriezen.
I should not freeze my eggs.
Oké, ja. Dus het was
Okay, yes. So it was
wel, inderdaad, een vraag op vijftien
Well, indeed, a question on fifteen.
miljoen kinderen, oh help,
million children, oh help,
nee, nu zeker niet. Maar
no, definitely not now. But
it was very important, thank you Jan, that you there
the steps you have taken further to
good to understand, what is happening with my
lichaam gebeuren, dat je echt een
body happening, that you really a
heel bewuste keuze kon maken, toch?
You could make a very conscious choice, couldn't you?
Yes, I am very happy that mom supports me in that.
verder heeft geduwd, dat ik toch
further pushed, that I still
eens zou gaan luisteren.
would eventually listen.
En Damia reageerde wel toen je
And Damia did respond when you
What was going through your mind when you said that?
Ja, nee,
Yes, no.
ik ben veel in contact, ik geef
I am in contact a lot, I give.
les aan jongeren, die zijn iets ouder,
lesson to young people, who are somewhat older,
die zijn achttien tot tweeëntwintig,
who are eighteen to twenty-two,
maar dat zijn mensen, als je daar
but those are people, if you are there
iets aan vraagt over de toekomst,
asks something about the future,
die hebben geen idee.
they have no idea.
En dat is ook niet nodig, dat
And that is not necessary either, that
die dat nu al weten. Dus ik vind
those who already know that. So I think
die vraag gewoon absurd.
that question is simply absurd.
Dat je aan een
That you are at a
vijftienjarige vraagt, wil je later kinderen?
Fifteen-year-old asks, do you want children later?
Dat kun je gewoon niet weten.
You just can't know that.
Because after such a treatment it is effectively impossible.
om nog op een natuurlijke manier...
to still do so in a natural way...
Dat hangt er vanaf, van de behandeling.
It depends on the treatment.
But yes, I find that very interesting.
dat ze dan echt wel ervoor zorgen
that they will really make sure of it
dat eicellen kunnen bevroren worden,
that egg cells can be frozen,
dat gewoon die beslissing later
that just that decision later
terug kan komen.
can return.
That you shouldn't say now, I'm making a decision.
voor binnen...
for indoors...
vijftien jaar soms.
fifteen years sometimes.
Ja, inderdaad.
Yes, indeed.
So we will only do that in a few years.
weten,
to know,
het was uiteindelijk niet nodig.
it was ultimately not necessary.
Maar voilà,
But there you go,
die doordachte beslissingen zijn natuurlijk wel
those well-considered decisions are of course
heel belangrijk. Want het is inderdaad,
very important. Because it is indeed,
je zei het heel mooi Damia,
you said it very beautifully Damia,
What do you know at fifteen about what the future is?
And we had asked you that question as well,
de toekomst, is die nu anders
the future, is it different now
voor of na?
before or after?
Ga ik nu anders naar die toekomst
Am I now looking at that future differently?
voor de kanker en na de kanker?
before cancer and after cancer?
En daar, ja,
And there, yes,
ik ben wel benieuwd, vertel maar wat.
I am curious, just tell me what.
Een heel groot
A very big
plan voor mij zie ik niet. Ik denk dat ik
I don't see a plan for me. I think that I
vooral van dag tot dag
especially from day to day
Live, because that is what we also learned back then.
ik ziek werd. Mama zei van ja,
I got sick. Mom said yes,
de dood is een groot
death is a great
Word, but you still end up facing it.
Want je weet nooit als je lichaam
Because you never know when your body
niet reageert op de chemo of zoiets.
does not respond to the chemo or something like that.
Mama heeft gezegd van,
Mom said that,
If you want to do something, then we will do it.
Wil je iets, dan krijg je dat. En we genieten van
If you want something, you get it. And we enjoy
dag tot dag. Bijvoorbeeld
day to day. For example
s'avonds alles gaan wandelen,
in the evening go for a walk.
en dan ergens een warme choco
and then a hot chocolate somewhere
gaan drinken, dat was voor ons heel
going to drink, that was very important to us
veel geluk. En daar haalden wij echt ons
good luck. And there we really got our
plezier uit. Ja.
Enjoy it. Yes.

That's how it goes.

rijden op de moto, want
riding on the motorcycle, because
dat was echt wat mij hoop en
that really gave me hope and
positiviteit gaf. Ja.
positivity gave. Yes.
En dat is uiteindelijk wel gelukt.
And that has ultimately succeeded.
Ja, want je bent terug heel intensief

aan het crossen ondertussen.
in the meantime, cross country skiing.
Ja. Dat hebben we begrepen.
Yes. We have understood that.
Je liet echt net een belangrijke woord

even. Yes, that

jij daarover? Heb je daar toen
you about that? Did you then
over gesproken, met
talked about, with
jongeren van jouw leeftijd of anderen, of
young people your age or others, or
nu? Hoe kijk je daarnaar?
Now? How do you look at that?
Goh,
Wow,
dat is een heel moeilijke vraag.
that is a very difficult question.
Ik ben altijd heel positief

gebleven. En bijvoorbeeld ik

zelf hebben we niet vaak

I'm going to die.
Maar uiteindelijk zijn wij heel positief

op die motor gesprongen. Je gaat ondertussen ook

terug naar school. Ja.
Back to school. Yes.
Hoe
How
kijk je nu
are you watching now
"to life in the sense, does cancer still hold you?"
bezig? Is dat dagelijks?
Busy? Is that daily?
Hoe zit
How are you?
is it still in your life at this moment?

Yes, that's correct.
Ik denk dat bij elke

Nee,
No,
inderdaad, dat kunnen wij bevestigen.
Indeed, we can confirm that.
Dat je altijd...

Want
Want
jullie spreken inderdaad
you do indeed speak
ook nog wel vaak met patiënten,

Dat willen wij niet. Dus wij spreken
We don't want that. So we talk.
wel met patiënten daarover. En dus er zijn een aantal
Well, with patients about that. And so there are a number of
patiënten die we nu

follow up.
Vanwaar dat we veel input krijgen.
Where does it come from that we receive a lot of input?
En die ons ook doen
And that we also do.
kijken naar een project, zien een

other, in a different way.
Ah ja, oké.
Ah yes, okay.
So they really provide the perspective from the patient?
Ja. Dus als wij een project
Yes. So if we have a project
willen submitten voor een

geld te krijgen, dan vragen we
to get money, then we ask
ook eerst advies aan patiënten.
also first advice to patients.
Oké, ja. En
Okay, yes. And
zijn zij ook heel ongeduldig om dan
are they also very impatient to then
aan de slag, om echt te kunnen
let's get to work, to really be able to
to get started with those tests?
Not necessarily, because most of the patients are
eigenlijk patiënten die aan kanker genezen zijn.
actually patients who have been cured of cancer.
Of toch voorlopig geen therapie

to need.
And they also know how slowly it goes.
Dat zijn mensen die veel
Those are people who are a lot.
met wetenschappers hebben
with scientists have
gecommuniceerd. Dus die weten van, als wij nu
communicated. So they know that, if we now
geld gaan vragen, dan is dat
asking for money, then that's
misschien binnen vijftien jaar.
maybe within fifteen years.
Dus die beseffen dat.
So they realize that.
Yes, and that's a very important point you make, because
dat lijkt allemaal heel ver, maar inderdaad
that all seems very far away, but indeed
die kleine stappen, elk moment, zijn
those small steps, every moment, are
heel belangrijk. Dus dat lijkt zo van
very important. So it seems like
ja, ik geef hier
yes, I give here
money for something that will only exist later,
maar besef dat het ook is
but realize that it is also
thanks to research from twenty years ago, which we now
bepaalde dingen hebben. Dus we moeten dat echt
certain things to have. So we really need to do that.
in dat perspectief zetten natuurlijk.

Misschien moeten we dan
