Op het moment van de melding was ik net met mijn dienst begonnen als centraliste van de meldkamer in Amsterdam.

At the time of the report, I had just started my shift as a dispatcher in the control room in Amsterdam.

Het was zondagnacht, een koude lentennacht.

It was Sunday night, a cold spring night.

En eigenlijk was dit het eerste telefoontje dat ik opnam.

And actually, this was the first phone call I answered.

Er was een meisje in paniek en huilend.

There was a girl in panic and crying.

Een jonge leeftijd rond de twintig.

A young age around twenty.

Ze was heel ongemakkelijk.

She was very uncomfortable.

Ze was volledig in paniek.

She was in complete panic.

Je hoorde echt de angst vanuit haar stem komen.

You could really hear the fear in her voice.

Er was heel veel kabaal om haar heen te horen.

There was a lot of noise to be heard around her.

Ik kon niet helemaal duidelijk krijgen wat er nu precies met haar aan de hand was.

I couldn't quite figure out what was going on with her.

Ik zag dan aan haar locatie waar ze was en dat was eigenlijk midden op het water.

I could see her location and she was actually right in the middle of the water.

Wat natuurlijk vreemd is op een zondagnacht.

What is of course strange on a Sunday night.

Op dat moment wil je gewoon heel graag weten wat er aan de hand is, zodat je haar kan helpen.

At that moment, you just really want to know what is going on so that you can help her.

Het was heel erg moeilijk om haar te helpen.

It was very difficult to help her.

Heel veel gehuil vanuit haar kant.

A lot of crying from her side.

Ze probeerde eigenlijk haar eerst heel rustig te krijgen.

She was actually trying to calm her down first.

Een paar keer aanmoedigd van het is goed, het is oké.

Encouraged a few times with "it's good, it's okay."

En toen pas kwam eigenlijk het verhaal naar boven.

And only then did the story actually come to light.

Het eerste wat ze eigenlijk tegen me zei, dat ze tegen haar wil op een boot zat.

The first thing she actually said to me was that she was on a boat against her will.

Dat ze hier niet meer wilde zijn, dat ze terug aan wal wilde.

That she no longer wanted to be here, that she wanted to go back to shore.

En om in een keer zo'n paniek te horen, dat triggert iets.

And to hear such panic all at once, that triggers something.

Je gaat anders naar haar luisteren dan dat ik bij een ander telefoontje over geluidsoverlast zou luisteren.

You will listen to her differently than I would listen to another call about noise complaints.

Door haar paniek was het eigenlijk bij mij al direct, dit is niet goed.

Due to her panic, I immediately thought this isn't good.

En ik denk dat ik dat ook direct heb uitgesproken naar mijn leidinggevende.

And I think I immediately expressed that to my supervisor.

Die zat naast me op dat moment.

She was sitting next to me at that moment.

Dit is niet goed.

This is not good.

Om me heen begonnen allemaal dingen in werking te zetten.

Things around me started to come into action.

Mijn leidinggevende kwam om te kijken of er even iets was.

My supervisor came to see if there was something for a moment.

Of er een boot was die we konden regelen.

Whether there was a boat we could arrange.

Er is ook een moment geweest van, kan je met haar ophangen om andere dingen te gaan regelen.

There has also been a moment of, can you hang out with her to take care of other things.

En daarop was direct mijn antwoord nee, ik kan haar niet alleen laten.

And my answer was immediately no, I can't leave her alone.

En verder heb ik wel gehoord dat mijn collega's de politieagent gingen aansturen.

And furthermore, I have heard that my colleagues were going to direct the police officer.

Maar meer heb ik me eigenlijk op haar gefocust.

En heb ik niet heel veel meegekregen met wat er om me heen gebeurde.

And I didn't really take in much of what was happening around me.

Ik zat achter mijn computer nog wat administratie te doen.

I was sitting behind my computer doing some administration work.

Op een gegeven moment kwam een collega naar mij toe lopen.

At one point, a colleague walked up to me.

En hij vertelde dat we een melding hadden gekregen van de meldkamer.

And he said that we had received a notification from the control room.

En dat de prioriteit hoog was.

And that the priority was high.

En dat er een vrouw op een boot zou zitten.

And that there would be a woman on a boat.

Vervolgens zei hij, we hebben nog geen boot kunnen regelen.

Then he said, we haven't been able to arrange a boat yet.

Dus daar schrok ik wel van.

So that really shocked me.

Ik dacht, daar moeten we snel naar toe.

I thought we should hurry there.

We moeten haar helpen.

We must help her.

Want ik had ook begrepen van collega's dat ze helemaal zaten trillen en te huilen.

Because I had also understood from colleagues that they were shaking and crying completely.

Ik heb zelf ook twee dochters.

Op een gegeven moment na drie kwartier dacht ik, is die boot er nog steeds niet?

At some point after three quarters of an hour, I thought, is that boat still not here?

Ik wilde haar helpen.

I wanted to help her.

Ze was zo erg overstuur, in paniek, aan het huilen.

She was so very upset, in a panic, crying.

Maar dan hoor je ook nog een mannenstem die je niet kan plaatsen.

But then you also hear a man's voice that you can't place.

En die wordt eigenlijk steeds duidelijker.

And that is actually becoming increasingly clear.

Wordt steeds harder.

Is getting harder and harder.

En die blijft maar roepen, ik gooi je overboord.

And he keeps shouting, I'm going to throw you overboard.

Ik voelde me verantwoordelijk voor haar.

I felt responsible for her.

En ik heb ook toen op dat moment aan haar gevraagd van, waar is hij dan?

And I also asked her at that moment, where is he then?

En toen legde ze eigenlijk uit dat hij onder het dek zat.

And then she actually explained that he was under the deck.

En je hoorde eigenlijk, het moment dat hij naar boven kwam, begon hij ook te schreeuwen tegen haar.

And you actually heard, the moment he came upstairs, he also started yelling at her.

En je hoorde eigenlijk echt in haar stem dat er weer wat aan de hand was.

And you could really hear in her voice that something was wrong again.

En op dat moment hoorde ik ook dat hij weer naar boven kwam.

And at that moment, I also heard that he was coming back upstairs.

Want het geluid, het geschreeuw werd eigenlijk steeds harder.

Because the sound, the screaming was actually getting louder and louder.

Maar ja, op dat moment wist ik echt, hij staat naast haar.

Zij hield zich stevig vast aan een kist, had ik begrepen.

She was holding on tightly to a chest, I understood.

En ik begrijp dat zij echt doodsangsten heeft moeten uitstaan.

And I understand that she must have gone through a real ordeal.

Toen we van land op het schip gingen, duurde het ongeveer tien minuten, kwartiertje.

When we went from land to the ship, it took about ten minutes, a quarter of an hour.

Voordat we het andere schip zagen liggen.

Before we saw the other ship lying there.

Maar ik weet dat wij normaliter niet aan boord mogen stappen.

But I know that normally we are not allowed to board.

Er zijn allemaal procedures in verband met de veiligheid.

There are all kinds of procedures related to safety.

Maar ja, we moesten, we konden niet anders.

But yes, we had to, we had no other choice.

Want je weet nooit wat hij gaat doen.

Ondertussen ben ik met haar aan de telefoon gebleven.

In the meantime, I stayed on the phone with her.

Heb ik haar op een gegeven moment naar de stuurman gestuurd.

I sent her to the helmsman at one point.

Omdat ze daar veilig kon zitten.

Because she could sit there safely.

He stood up tense.

We hebben gelijk besproken dat die verdachte gelijk met die collega's mee moet van het boot af.

We immediately agreed that the suspect should leave the boat with those colleagues.

Om erg te voorkomen.

To avoid it very much.

Want als wij gaan vechten met hem op de boot.

Because if we fight with him on the boat.

Dan zouden we natuurlijk in het water kunnen belanden.

En dat willen we niet.

Heb ik vijf minuten voor mezelf gepakt.

Heb ik een theetje gedronken.

I drank a little tea.

En dan gaat het werk weer verder.
