Vorig jaar rond deze tijd ben ik begonnen met de voorbereidingen van deze podcast.
Last year around this time, I started preparing for this podcast.
Ik heb veel mensen gesproken en nog veel meer radio-uitzendingen van Alfred beluisterd.
I have spoken to many people and listened to many more radio broadcasts of Alfred.
Vervolgens heb ik samen met audio-vormgever Dion Polsdijk uiteindelijk heel wat avonden gesleuteld aan het verhaal.
Then, together with audio designer Dion Polsdijk, I spent quite a few evenings tweaking the story.
En uiteindelijk is deze tiendelige serie het resultaat geworden.

De reacties overtroffen mijn stoutste verwachtingen.

Het feit dat zoveel mensen nog zoveel voelen bij het werk van Lagarde heeft me echt goed gedaan.

Dit is haar verhaal over hoe zij bij Veronica terecht kwam.

En die had mij gehoord op Radio Decibel in Amsterdam.
And she had heard me on Radio Decibel in Amsterdam.
En die vroeg of ik een demootje wilde maken voor Lex Harding.
And he asked if I wanted to make a little demo for Lex Harding.
Omdat ze op zoek waren naar een redactielid, presentatrice...
Because they were looking for an editorial member, presenter...
voor het jongerenprogramma Trend.

Op Hilversum 1 zat dat toen nog.

En ik zeg, Ton, ik sta net op het punt om te vertrekken.

Toen werd ik uitgenodigd op de vaartweg bij Lex Harding.

En die stelde mij twee vragen.
And she asked me two questions.
Eigenlijk maar één vraag.

Hij zei, welke platen uit het Decibel-repertoire...
He said, which records from the Decibel repertoire...
gaan de tipparade halen? Noem er zes.
Are we going to reach the chart? Name six.
Toen heb ik zes platen opgenoemd.

Wat was het eerste programma waar je bij betrokken was?

Het was een journalistiek jongerenprogramma.
It was a journalistic youth program.
Ze wilden iemand uit de doelgroep.
They wanted someone from the target group.
Dus het was voor jongeren van 12 tot 18 jaar.
So it was for young people aged 12 to 18.
Ze wilden echt iemand uit de doelgroep hebben.
They really wanted someone from the target group.
Dus ik begon echt helemaal vanuit het niets eigenlijk...
So I really started from scratch, actually...
met een begeleiding van Ton items maken.
making items with the guidance of Ton.
Met een nagra het hele land door.
With a nagra through the whole country.
Mensen interviewen.
Interviewing people.
En toen was er nog geen internet.
And then there was no internet yet.
Met de Gouden Gids en al dat soort dingen.
With the Yellow Pages and all that sort of thing.
Maar heel ander werk dan Decibel natuurlijk.
But very different work than Decibel, of course.
Ja, maar alleen zat er wel muziek in.
Yes, but it did have music in it.
Die mocht ik ook zelf kiezen.
I could choose that myself as well.
Iets van zes tot acht platen per uur.
Something like six to eight records per hour.
En ik leerde echt alles.
And I really learned everything.
Montage, redactie, productie.
Editing, production, assembly.
Alles, alles, alles.
Everything, everything, everything.
Hoe ben je dan uiteindelijk bij Alfa terechtgekomen?
How did you end up at Alfa in the end?
Of hoe was je eerste ontmoeting? Kun je dat nog herinneren?
Or how was your first meeting? Can you still remember that?
Mijn eerste ontmoeting kan ik me niet herinneren.
I cannot remember my first meeting.
Maar ik weet wel dat Club Veronica kwam heel snel...
But I do know that Club Veronica came very quickly...
nadat ik daar begon.
after I started there.
En toen gingen ze dus echt jongeren opleiden...
And then they really started training young people...
om radio te maken.

Dus daar heb ik toen ook Francis Dix uit het grote leger geplukt.

En die ging ik toen met hun bij Trent items maken.

Dus dat was onze eerste samenwerking.
So that was our first collaboration.

Ik had natuurlijk wel eerst iets van...

Maar hij was gewoon superprofessioneel ook.

En ook niet bang om fouten te maken.
And not afraid to make mistakes either.
Dus dat was ook weer prettig.
So that was nice again.
Want dan kon je zelf ook fouten maken en gewoon doorgaan.

Dat heb ik vaker gehoord.

Dat hij een beetje laconiek was in de positieve zin van het woord.

En hij ook wel wist hoe het soms kan gaan in de mediawereld, zeker.

Vandaag zijn we te gast op een kleine school.

De Delta MAVO in Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht heeft namelijk maar 290 leerlingen.

De school werd in 1965 gesticht.

En sinds 1975 worden de lessen gegeven in een nieuw gebouw aan de Appiaal de Ruiterlaan.
