Al meer dan 35 jaar zijn de zussen Greti en Christa van de Velde actief als juwelenontwerpers in Grimbergen.

For more than 35 years, sisters Greti and Christa van de Velde have been active as jewelry designers in Grimbergen.

Hun zaak het Cederhuis langs de Brusselse Steenweg leverde zelfs een juweel af dat ver over onze grenzen de aandacht trok.

Their business, the Cederhuis along the Brussels Road, produced a jewel that attracted attention far beyond our borders.

Een van de grootste juwelen die ik gemaakt heb was een collier in de vorm van een vogel.

One of the largest pieces of jewelry I made was a necklace in the shape of a bird.

Een heel open, vrij collier met een mooie steen erin.

A very open, free necklace with a beautiful stone in it.

En die is gedragen geweest op de biennale van Venetië.

And it has been worn at the Venice Biennale.

Het begon nogthans allemaal heel bescheiden.

It all started very modestly, however.

Wij zijn samen gestart, maar ik was toen al Goudsmit en Greti was nog aan het leren.

We started together, but I was already Goudsmit and Greti was still learning.

Ze was op leercontract en we hebben ongelooflijk veel geluk gehad.

She was on an apprenticeship and we were incredibly lucky.

Want onze leermeester is samen met ons verhuisd naar onze kleine winkel op de Hoge Steenweg.

Because our master has moved with us to our small shop on the Hoge Steenweg.

En die heeft daar verder mij en Greti opgeleid.

And that has further educated me and Greti there.

Dus wij hebben ons vak geleerd.

So we have learned our craft.

In het huis, samen met hem.

In the house, together with him.

Dus wij hadden een ongelooflijk goede meester Goudsmit in huis.

So we had an incredibly good teacher, Goudsmit, in the house.

En nogthans waren we heel jong als we startten.

And yet we were very young when we started.

23 en 18 waren we.

We were 23 and 18.

Dus ja, dat was een unieke combinatie.

So yes, that was a unique combination.

En hoe begin je met zoiets?

And how do you start with something like that?

Koop je een oven om goud te smelten?

Are you buying an oven to melt gold?

Koop je een paar kilo en ben je vertrokken?

Do you buy a few kilos and then you're off?

Of hoe gaat dat?

Or how does that work?

Nee, we zijn heel klein begonnen.

No, we started very small.

We hadden ook geen budget.

We also had no budget.

Dus we zijn een beetje per stapje voor stapje gegroeid.

So we have grown a little step by step.

Dat is iets waar je niet zegt van oké, ik koop nu een oven ofzo.

That's not something you just say, okay, I'm going to buy an oven or something.

Nee, wij smelten met kleine hoeveelheden.

No, we melt with small amounts.

En dan wordt het goud telkens verwerkt.

And then the gold is processed each time.

We zijn organisch gegroeid.

We have grown organically.

Organisch gegroeid, ja.

Organically grown, yes.

En telkens als we iets verkochten, dan werd het opnieuw geïnvesteerd.

And each time we sold something, it was reinvested.

Dat is eigenlijk wel wel 36 jaar doen.

En telkens als we iets verkopen, kopen we dan weer...

And every time we sell something, we buy something again...

met die waarde, mooiere stenen.

Waardoor dat we nu een hele mooie, grote collectie edelstenen hebben...

Een van de concerten waar ik zelf hier op ben is dat ik Rocco Granata hier nog eens heb kunnen laten optreden.

Dat vind ik nog altijd een van de zeer belangrijke artiesten in onze muziekgeschiedenis.

En dat is niet gelogen.

Zij is hier komen spelen en de dag nadien komt er telefoon binnen op de zaal en ze verbinden mij door en zegt, is Rocco Granata aan het telefoon?

She came here to play and the next day a phone call comes in the hall and they connect me through and say, is Rocco Granata on the phone?

Ik zeg ja, verbind mij maar door.

I say yes, please connect me.

En hij zegt ja, dat is te winnen, ik heb daar je foto's in hangen, ik wil die kopen.

Het blijft eigenlijk nog, want er zijn veel dingen dat al een stuk geschiedenis hebben gekregen en in die zoveel jaren blijven hier wel altijd wat dingen achter.

Alle anekdotes van het cultureel centrum verwerken in een verhalende show hebben ze in het cultureel centrum nog niet gepland.
