It's already been a good number of weeks ago.
sinds de laatste podcast
since the last podcast
zo vlak voor en na de vakantie
just before and after the holiday
dan is het altijd erg druk
then it is always very busy
en ik wilde eigenlijk tijdens mijn vakantie
and I actually wanted to during my holiday
deze podcast opnemen
recording this podcast
but that wasn't so simple at a campsite
of er is te veel lawaai
or there is too much noise
of het is heel stil
or it is very quiet
but yes, then I can't talk loudly again
vandaar dat de podcast even stil lag
That's why the podcast was quiet for a while.
maar we pakken ze nu weer op
but we're picking them up again now
terugkomend
returning
op de vorige podcast heb ik beloofd
In the previous podcast, I promised.
that we are going to talk about the skin
and there is a lot to tell about that
dus laten we bij de buitenste laag
so let's focus on the outer layer
van de huid beginnen
Starting from the skin
en dan bedoel ik niet
and I don’t mean
de opperhuid
the epidermis
dat stukje huid waar we naar kijken
that piece of skin we are looking at
en kunnen voelen
and can feel
nee, boven die opperhuid
no, above that epidermis
daar zit nog een belangrijke laag
there is still an important layer there
namelijk het microbioom van de huid
namely the skin microbiome
dit is een flinterdun laagje
this is a very thin layer
van vetzuren, bacteriën, schimmels, virussen
of fatty acids, bacteria, fungi, viruses
en andere stofjes
and other substances
waarbij het microbioom
where the microbiome
soms ook iets dieper zit
sometimes it is something deeper
zoals in onze zweet- en tallerklier
as in our sweat and salivary gland
eigenlijk lijkt die huid in die zin
actually, that skin seems so in that sense
best veel op onze darmen
best a lot on our intestines
ook onze darmen hebben een huidbarrière
Our intestines also have a skin barrier.
met toch ook een dun laagje
with yet a thin layer
waarin bacteriën, virussen en schimmels
in which bacteria, viruses, and fungi
genesteld zijn
to be nestled
en dat dunne laagje
and that thin layer
waar de darmbacteriën nestelen
where the gut bacteria settle
dat is het darmslemvlies
that is the intestinal mucosa
darmbacteriën
intestinal bacteria
die zitten zowel in de dunne darm
they are found in the small intestine
als in de dikke darm
as in the large intestine
maar veruit de meeste
but far the most
zitten in de dikke darm
sitting in the large intestine
wel zo'n 95%
well about 95%
that's why we mainly talk about the microbiome
van de dikke darm hebben
having of the large intestine
en zo'n darmslemvlies
and such a intestinal membrane
dat klinkt heel indrukwekkend
that sounds very impressive
maar het is niet zo dik
but it's not that thick
voor de belangrijke functies
for the important functions
die het vervult
that fulfills it
is het eigenlijk maar flinterdun
it's actually very thin
het slijmvlies van de dunne darm
the mucosa of the small intestine
bijvoorbeeld is ongeveer 120 micron dik
for example is approximately 120 microns thick
dat is een tiende van een millimeter
that is a tenth of a millimeter
ongeveer zo dik als twee haren
about as thick as two hairs
niet heel indrukwekkend dus
not very impressive then
en het slijmvlies van de dikke darm
and the mucus membrane of the colon
dat is wel wat dikker
that's quite a bit thicker
maar nog steeds minder dikker
but still less thicker
minder dan een millimeter
less than a millimeter
en dat flinterdunne laagje
and that thin layer
dat is de broedplaats voor miljoenen bacteriën
that is the breeding ground for millions of bacteria
virussen en schimmels
viruses and fungi
and there is still a place in the body
met zo'nzelfde structuur
with such a similar structure
ook daar een epidermis
also there an epidermis
een dunne slijmlaag
a thin layer of mucus
en een microbioom
and a microbiome
met bacteriën, virussen en schimmels
with bacteria, viruses, and fungi
namelijk in onze longen
namely in our lungs
en dat al deze lagen
and that all these layers
ongeveer dezelfde opbouw hebben
have approximately the same structure
dat is helemaal niet zo vreemd
that is not strange at all
want zowel met onze huid
because both with our skin
de darmen als de longen
the intestines like the lungs
with that, we are in contact with the outside world.
ja
yes
ook onze darmen
also our intestines
de inhoud van onze darmen
the contents of our intestines
dat is nog steeds buitenwereld
that is still outside world
so both the skin, the intestines, and the lungs
die moeten ziekmakende bacteriën
they must be disease-causing bacteria
virussen en schimmels
viruses and fungi
maar ook chemische stoffen tegenhouden
but also block chemical substances
en niet alleen
and not only
Both the skin, intestines, and lungs have a microbiome.
nee
no
With all those life forms, we should at least be living in symbiosis.
but those bacteria, viruses, and fungi also react to each other
It is therefore a very complex society full of interactions.
so with a change in the microbiome in the gut
Does the microbiome on the skin actually change as well?
en in de longen
and in the lungs
or that the opposite happens, for example, that the skin's microbiome
onze darm beïnvloedt
our gut influences
dat weet ik niet
I don't know that.
I've never read or heard about that before.
It is clear that our intestines influence our skin.
we are talking about an imbalance in this microbiome
als er te weinig variatie is
if there is too little variation
if one or a few life forms gain the upper hand
te weinig variatie in de dikke darm
too little variation in the large intestine
kan bijvoorbeeld leiden tot vermoeidheid
can for example lead to fatigue
darmklachten of zelfs depressieve gevoelens
intestinal issues or even depressive feelings
And also in eczema, you see a lack of variation of bacteria on the skin.
this is how a Staphylococcus aureus bacterium can start booking
en zo'n hele eczeem plek bevolken
and populate such an entire eczema spot
actually, it's just like the current environmental crisis
A good environment benefits from as many life forms as possible.
zonder dat er één de overhand krijgt
without one gaining the upper hand
Does it happen that we humans have now grown exponentially in number?
Yes, that can come at the expense of the diversity of other life forms.
So we want to keep the microbiome diverse on the skin as well.
en daarvoor zijn een paar invloeden belangrijk
and for that, a few influences are important
first of all, the acidity or pH of the skin
in het bloed is de ideale pH zo'n 7,4
In the blood, the ideal pH is about 7.4.
that is a light base pH because a neutral pH is 7.0
dat is een pH van 5 tot 5,5
that is a pH of 5 to 5.5
that is therefore not neutral but slightly acidic
and that's not for nothing because of the acidity
the growth of bacteria and fungi and such on the skin is inhibited
wat ik net zei over eczeem
What I just said about eczema.
that certain bacteria can start to book there
that imbalance in the microbiome is not the only thing that is disrupted in the skin
the acidity on an eczema spot is almost always too high
Instead of around 5.5, the pH in an eczema spot can be as high as 7.5 or 8.
There are then too few acids on the skin to keep the bacteria under control.
because many bacteria on the skin really do not like acid
and therefore grow less well on a somewhat acidic skin
but develop very well on a basic skin
and you can also compare this to processes in nature
because we often want the opposite in the soil
Plants benefit from bacteria and fungi in the soil.
This way, bacteria in the clover's root can help in storing nitrogen in that root.
and many plants live in symbiosis with fungi
because those fungi can bring nutrients to that root
dus in de grond
so in the ground
wil je niet te veel zuur
don't want too much acid
want dan gaan die bacteriën schimmels dood
because then those bacteria will kill fungi
but on the skin we would like some acidity
because we do not want a proliferation of bacteria there
However, the intention is not to soak in a bath with vinegar daily to make the skin acidic again.
azijn is natuurlijk wel goed zuur
Vinegar is of course nicely sour.
and in doing so, you also lower the pH of the skin
but we sweat out no large amounts of vinegar
om de ph van de huid zuur te maken
to make the pH of the skin acidic
onze transpiratie bevat misschien wel wat melkzuur
Our sweat may contain some lactic acid.
and maybe some other acids from our metabolism
but the most important acid on the skin is fatty acid
oftewel gewoon vet
or just simply awesome
and besides that fat or oil on the skin
dat de huid wat zuur maakt
that the skin becomes somewhat acidic
heeft het nog een voordeel
does it still have an advantage
want vetten houden vocht vast
because fats retain moisture
and that retention of moisture in the skin
You won't get that from each other if you smear your skin with vinegar.
Moreover, I'm not really fond of the smell of vinegar either.
maybe still in a salad or another dish
maar liever niet als deo of bodylotion
but rather not as deodorant or body lotion
For healthy skin, we primarily want fats on the skin.
It's no wonder that doctors advise using petroleum jelly for eczema, for example.
want dat houdt de huid goed vet
because that keeps the skin well moisturized
Still, I personally prefer something more natural.
zoals een natuurlijke bodylotion of een lichaamsolie
such as a natural body lotion or a body oil
because fats can also be absorbed through the skin
I still remember a client with very dry skin.
that when he applied Vaseline to the skin
binnen een half uur weer een hele droge huid had
had a completely dry skin again within half an hour
so that petroleum is simply absorbed through the skin
en aardolie in mijn lichaam
and petroleum in my body
want daar is vaseline van gemaakt
because that is made of petroleum jelly
dat lijkt me niet zo gezond
That doesn't seem very healthy to me.
but rather than a cream or oil, I prefer to work from the inside out
via de tallagcliëren
through the tallagcliëren
een belangrijke vraag is dus
an important question is thus
How do we get the talc clients to produce enough talc?
Well, I think this podcast has been long enough again.
So let's discuss the functioning of the tallagcliëren in the next podcast.
And if you would like to know more about the skin in the meantime.
het microbioom van de huid
the skin microbiome
of the influence of the gut on the skin
Then you could go through the book by skin therapist Marceline Goyer.
She has elaborated well on how the intestines and the skin interact with each other.
it may not be the easiest book to read
omdat het geen mooi chronologisch verhaal is
because it is not a nice chronological story
more a compilation of descriptions of processes that can be disrupted
but it is certainly a nice reference work at the level of bacteria, chemicals, and cellular processes.
I will put the title in the show notes.
dus zoals Bas net al heeft aangegeven
so as Bas just indicated
gaat de volgende podcast over onze tallagcliëren
Is the next podcast about our tallagcliëren?
hoe deze ontregeld kunnen raken
how they can be disrupted
en wat we hier aan kunnen doen
and what we can do about this
tot de volgende
until next time
