Ik had VWO 6 bijna afgerond.

I had almost completed VWO 6.

I wasn't quite sure what I really wanted or which direction I wanted to go.

Echt een technische studie leek me niet.

It really didn't seem like a technical study to me.

Dat was niet heel leuk.

That wasn't very nice.

Ik wilde wel eens avontuurlijks doen.

I wanted to do something more adventurous.

Ik wilde ook eigenlijk wel iets met sport of met beweging doen.

I actually also wanted to do something with sports or with movement.

Defensie leek me gewoon een hele leuke werkgever.

Defense just seemed like a really nice employer to me.

Ik wist niet zo goed welke functie bij defensie.

I wasn't quite sure which position to take in the defense.

Maar ik dacht, ik begin gewoon in de opleiding, in de officiersopleiding.

But I thought, I'll just start in the training, in the officer training.

En dan zie ik het daar misschien wel.

And then I might see it there.

Ik denk dat ik met die insteek begonnen ben.

I think I started with that approach.

Ik ben na het VWO naar het KIM toe gegaan.

I went to the KIM after finishing VWO.

Dat is de officiersopleiding.

That is the officer training.

Daar heb ik vier jaar gestudeerd.

I studied there for four years.

En daarna nog twee jaar in Delft.

And then another two years in Delft.

Je ontwikkelt jezelf op het gebied van leidinggeven, op het gebied van coaching.

You are developing yourself in the area of leadership, in the area of coaching.

Je gaat jezelf ook wel een beetje ontdekken.

You will also discover a bit about yourself.

Je gaat je grenzen ontdekken.

You are going to discover your limits.

Je leert heel veel organisatorische vaardigheden aan.

You learn a lot of organizational skills.

En daarnaast heb ik daar vrienden voor het leven gemaakt.

And besides, I made friends for life there.

En dat was echt een waanzinnige tijd.

And that was really a mad time.

Die zou ik zo over willen doen.

I would like to do that again.

Kun je eens een voorbeeld geven van wat er zo waanzinnig aan was?

Can you give an example of what was so insane about it?

Wat ik heel stimulerend vond, is dat er werd eigenlijk verteld.

What I found very encouraging is that it was actually explained.

Als jij een goed plan hebt om jezelf te ontwikkelen of om iets leuks te doen.

If you have a good plan to develop yourself or to do something fun.

Ga dat plan dan uitvoeren.

Then go ahead and execute that plan.

En dan helpen wij jou wel.

And then we will help you.

Toen dat verteld werd, denk ik dat wij binnen een week hadden wij een goed plan.

When that was told, I think that within a week we had a good plan.

Namelijk weer willen met het korps mariniers.

Namely, wanting to work with the Marine Corps again.

Dus mee op training voor een week.

So joining for training for a week.

En daarna wilden we de Mont Blanc op.

And then we wanted to climb Mont Blanc.

Dus bergtraining gevolgd door het beklimmen van de Mont Blanc.

So mountain training followed by climbing Mont Blanc.

En nog geen acht maanden later stonden wij daar op de top.

And not even eight months later, we stood there at the top.

En dan hadden we die bergtraining afgerond.

And then we had completed that mountain training.

Alleen maar omdat we dat zelf georganiseerd hadden.

Just because we had organized that ourselves.

Omdat we daar zelf allerlei initiatieven in mochten nemen.

Because we were allowed to take various initiatives ourselves there.

Dat soort mogelijkheden die dat gaf toen.

The kind of opportunities that it provided back then.

Daar heb ik echt van genoten.

I really enjoyed that.

Ja, en dan nu.

Yes, and now.

Je zei het eigenlijk al.

Van hoog in de lucht tot uiteindelijk de diepzee in.

From high in the sky to eventually the deep sea.

Hoe ben je daar zo terecht gekomen?

How did you end up there?

Misschien ben ik een beetje een twijfelkont.

Maybe I'm a bit of a doubter.

Maar ook na het Kim wist ik niet zo goed wat ik wilde doen.

But even after Kim, I wasn't really sure what I wanted to do.

Of ik boven water of onder water wilde varen.

Whether I wanted to sail above water or below water.

Of in welke functie dan.

Or in what capacity then.

Uiteindelijk kom je als technisch officier terug voor een technisch leidinggevende functie aan boord van een marineschip.

Eventually, you will return as a technical officer for a technical supervisory position on a naval ship.

Maar er zit wel wat verschil nog tussen boven water en onder water varen.

But there is still a difference between sailing above water and underwater.

Het grote verschil is dat je, zoals is het nu vooral ingeregeld.

The big difference is that you are, as it is now mainly arranged.

Dat je onder water begin je toch echt wel wat meer.

That you really start to feel a bit more underwater.

Met lokale kennis opdoen.

Gaining local knowledge.

Met wat vervelende klusjes uitvoeren.

By doing some annoying chores.

En daar zag ik in het begin wel tegenop.

And I was a bit apprehensive about that at first.

Ik dacht ja wil ik dat wel of wil ik niet liever gewoon ergens anders instromen.

I thought, do I want that or would I rather just start somewhere else?

En wat meer verantwoordelijkheid krijgen in het begin.

And getting more responsibility in the beginning.

Maar dat heb ik toch niet gedaan.

But I didn't do that.

Ik ben er heel blij om dat ik dat niet gedaan heb.

I am very glad that I didn't do that.

Ik vond het heel leuk om ook op het niveau van de matroos mee te lopen.

I really enjoyed walking alongside the level of the sailor.

Kijken hoe zij werken is.

Looking at how they work is.

En daar een band mee op te bouwen.

And to build a bond with it.

En een jaar eigenlijk dat te gaan doen.

And a year actually to do that.

Echt met je voet in de klei.

Really with your foot in the clay.

En waarna je weer wat meer richting leiding geven en management en coaching gaat.

"And then you'll be more focused on leading, management, and coaching again."

Nou daar heb ik over getwijfeld of ik dat wilde doen.

Well, I have thought about whether I wanted to do that.

Dat heb ik uiteindelijk gedaan.

I ultimately did that.

Omdat daar ook wel weer het avontuur van de onderzeeddienst me aantrok.

Because the adventure of the submarine service also attracted me.

Als wij gaan varen dan wat we gaan doen.

When we go sailing, then what we are going to do.

Dat is geheim.

That is a secret.

Dat praten we ook niet over.

We're not talking about that either.

Dat trok me ergens wel aan.

That did attract me in a way.

Ook de saamhorigheid binnen die club onderzeeddienst.

Also the camaraderie within that club submarine service.

Die kennen daar wat mensen.

They know some people there.

Die gingen op echt wel op een andere manier met elkaar om.

They really interacted with each other in a different way.

Dan wat ik gewend was bij bovenwater collega's.

Than what I was used to with surface colleagues.

Ja dat trok mij toen erg aan.

Yes, I was very drawn to that at the time.

En toen?

And then?

Toen ben ik daar begonnen.

Then I started there.

En zeven jaar later was ik hoofdtechnische dienst aan boord.

And seven years later I was head of the technical service on board.

En vaar ik in die rol eigenlijk aan boord van onderzeeboot.

And I actually sail in that role aboard a submarine.

What does your work involve?

Dat is heel divers.

That is very diverse.

En dat is ook wat het zo leuk maakt.

You are responsible for ensuring that proper maintenance is carried out there.

Wat ik denk wat heel belangrijk is.

What occupies their minds?

Wat is hun achtergrond?

What is their background?

Wat is hun motivatie om hier te werken?

What is their motivation to work here?

En wat willen ze graag?

And what do they want?

Waar willen ze zichzelf graag in ontwikkelen?

What do they want to develop themselves in?

En daar kun je denk ik een grote rol in spelen.

And I think you can play a big role in that.

Om ze daarbij te helpen.

To help them with that.

Om ze daar gericht over te adviseren.

To advise them specifically on that.

Of te coachen.

Or to coach.

Of de opleidingen aan te bieden.

Or to offer the training courses.

Die ze helpen.

They help them.

Die kant op.

That way.

Ik denk als je dat doet.

I think if you do that.

En daar veel aandacht voor hebt.

And pay a lot of attention to that.

Dat je ze daar ook gemotiveerd mee houdt of krijgt.
