With the knowledge of now, you will always look at what happened then.
With these famous words from Balkenende, Oers and I roam the political masters.
to look at the problems and the confusing times of today with their skills, wisdom, and many years of experience in The Hague.
And Oers, Oers, that is Oers Klaver, a political journalist and editor for many years.
En ik, ik ben Patrick Lodiers. Dit is Met de kennis van nu.
And I, I am Patrick Lodiers. This is With the knowledge we have now.
Bram van Orjik played an important role in the merger of four parties that began to be called GroenLinks in the late 1980s.
He was a member of the PPR and GroenLinks in the House of Representatives, was a diplomat, and held a senior position in foreign affairs.
After the enormous electoral defeat of GroenLinks in 2012, he took over from party leader Jolande Sap.
And he prepared Jesse Klaver for the big political work.
In the House of Representatives, he was a respected spokesperson for foreign affairs for many years.
How does Bram van Orjik reflect on his years in The Hague?
What can GroenLinks learn from the merger process of the Labor Party?
And how does Mr. van Orjik view the foreign policy of recent years?
We are speaking to him in the context of With the knowledge of now.
Mr. van Orjik, how nice that we can sit with you at the kitchen table for a moment.
Fijn dat jullie er zijn.
Glad that you are here.
Yes, let's get started right away.
Want afgelopen vrijdag is natuurlijk het regeerprogramma gepresenteerd.
Because last Friday the government program was of course presented.
Het is ook de dag voor Prinsjesdag. Hoe is de stemming?
It is also the day before Prinsjesdag. How is the mood?
Well, I must say I'm not very optimistic about what this new cabinet will mean for the Netherlands.
Waar zit het minste optimisme dan?
Where is the least optimism then?
Well, you see, the most developed plans are of course the ones for asylum.
En streng.
And a string.
Het strengste asielbeleid ooit.
The strictest asylum policy ever.
It is also非常 striking how extensively attention is paid to it there.
You might almost think that they demand so much attention that other things get a bit overshadowed.
For example, what they do for the security of people's existence.
Or what they do for education or for healthcare.
Of course, you can easily use it as a kind of distraction maneuver.
So it is very well developed on asylum.
Het is, ja.
It is, yes.
I think it's going the wrong way.
Because we have always been a country that offers protection to people who truly need it.
And now we are doing everything we can to discourage people who need protection from coming to the Netherlands.
We gaan de Tweede Kamer buitenspel zetten, hè, daarvoor.
We're going to sideline the House of Representatives, right, for that.
With measures that, let's say, threaten to sideline the House of Representatives.
I assume that the Chamber will not let that happen.
Because there is at least one party in the cabinet that holds the rule of law in high regard.
De partij van Pieter Roms heeft.
The party of Pieter Roms has.
So you would hope that there will soon be a majority to prevent that.
Dat de Tweede Kamer buitenspel wordt.
That the House of Representatives is sidelined.
Dat zullen we moeten afwachten.
We'll have to wait and see.
But I am pessimistic at that point.
And I am afraid that behind the whole asylum issue there are many other issues that we do not fully grasp yet.
But they could also sometimes be bad for the average Dutch person.
En waar zit dan uw geld?
And where is your money then?
Well, when it comes to things like cuts in education, cuts in public health, healthcare, cuts in culture.
I understand that the word culture, I haven't looked it up completely, but the word culture does not appear at all in the coalition agreement.
Regeerprogramma.
Government program.
Regeerprogramma moeten we zeggen.
We should say government program.
Ja, we moeten streng zijn.
Yes, we have to be strict.
It's nice that you keep an eye on that a bit, the government program.
And yes, if you look at something that is very close to my heart, development cooperation.
The biggest cut in the government program is in the area of international cooperation, specifically in development cooperation.
Then we will structurally end up cutting 2.4 billion euros, which is almost half of the budget.
En dat is heel slecht.
And that is very bad.
That is very bad for people in developing countries who unfortunately still live in poverty.
Yes, I can't say it any other way.
But it is also bad for the Netherlands, because you do not serve the Dutch interest if you are an unreliable ally.
Because how bad is that for the Netherlands when viewed from abroad?
Are people just watching and thinking, what are they doing?
Ja, dat denk ik wel.
Yes, I think so.
People have known the Netherlands for decades as a country that is quite prominent in the field of international cooperation.
There was always something to criticize, but on the whole, it was alright.
But the 0.7% of the gross national product that we are actually supposed to spend on development cooperation, we have not achieved since 2012.
No, that's correct. I remember that very well in the House of Representatives.
Ik was toen onder andere woordvoerder ontwikkelingssamenwerking.
I was, among other things, the spokesperson for development cooperation.
And I remember very well that we went below that 0.7 for the first time.
Internationaal afgesproken?
Agreed internationally?
Ja, internationaal afgesproken.
Yes, internationally agreed.
The Netherlands always endorses and signs, so to speak.
Dat is waar.
That is true.
We had done that for a long time, but then we fell behind on it.
But even in the past ten years, you can say that the Netherlands has still managed to play a leading role in the international development world.
In combinatie met handel en zo.
In combination with trade and so on.
Yes, but also because ultimately the cuts then...
Let’s say, I absolutely don’t speak that well, but I stayed within the limits.
But what is happening now is beyond all bounds, to be completely honest.
Because you remove such a substantial part of your budget, you simply can no longer do many things.
En dat zegt het kabinet ook.
And the cabinet says that too.
The cabinet says, we are actually only going to do what we as the Netherlands are good at.
Namely food, think of Wageningen and everything around it.
En water.
And water.
Denk aan de Nederlandse watersector.
Think of the Dutch water sector.
And that does very important work, that's not the issue.
But all that other stuff, education, health, human rights, entrepreneurial climate.
Denk ze hobby's?
Think of hobbies?
Ja, denk ze hobby's, kennelijk.
Yes, I think they're hobbies, apparently.
Whereby we could really lose a position within a few years.
En daar zit mijn grote zorg.
And there lies my big concern.
Dat was jullie vraag eigenlijk.
That was actually your question.
Well, especially when you say you're wasting your international role.
Iedereen zegt, ja maar het is maatwerk.
Everyone says, yes but it's custom work.
Maar ontwikkelingssamenwerking.
But development cooperation.
But how badly does that work abroad?
U bent diplomaat geweest.
You have been a diplomat.
Wat verspeel je dan?
What are you wasting then?
Yes, because you are actually showing that you are no longer a reliable ally.
So you're indeed not sticking to your international agreement.
But you also do not adhere to what you yourself have said is important to you.
If you say, we think it's important that girls can go to school.
Or we find it important to reduce maternal and child mortality in the world.
Dat zijn dingen die zijn niet...
Those are things that are not...
Yes, you could say that his leftist hobbies.
But you can also say that his universal ideas about what progress and development are.
Daar hebben we altijd geld voor uitgetrokken.
We have always budgeted for that.
And we have always been a partner for countries.
Voor heel veel landen in Afrika bijvoorbeeld.
For many countries in Africa, for example.
Neem alle landen in West-Afrika.
Take all the countries in West Africa.
Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger.
Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger.
Countries that have traditionally been partners of the Netherlands and the West.
Zijn nu Russische invloedssfeer of Chinese invloedssfeer geworden.
They have now become part of the Russian sphere of influence or the Chinese sphere of influence.
Dus het is ook kortzichtig.
So it is also short-sighted.
Het is eigenlijk heel dom.
It's actually very stupid.
Ja, het is dom.
Yes, it is stupid.
Because in a time when you need your allies all the more.
Want de wereld is ingewikkelder geworden.
Because the world has become more complicated.
There are many more centers of power, etc., etc.
Dus een land als Nederland.
So a country like the Netherlands.
Wat zo afhankelijk is van internationale relaties.
What is so dependent on international relations.
They have approximately the most open economy in the world.
Heeft meer dan ooit bondgenoten nodig.
Needs allies more than ever.
And then we will jeopardize our position in that way.
At least, I am very afraid of that.
Kortzichtig dus.
Short-sighted then.
Maar wat ook interessant is.
But what is also interesting is.
You explain well why it is so important.
Maar je hoort er niemand over.
But you don't hear anyone talking about it.
Er wordt 2,4 miljard bezuinigd.
There will be a budget cut of 2.4 billion.
And it's not that the Malieveld is filled with stripes.
Nou ja, dat is een ander grote...
Well, that's another big...
Ja, je zou kunnen zeggen.
Yes, you could say that.
En dat is ook ergernis van mij.
And that is also a point of annoyance for me.
Kijk, wat we doen.
Look, what we do.
En dat vind ik heel goed.
And I think that's very good.
If a cabinet says we are going to cut so much on healthcare.
Then let's have the Central Planning Bureau and the NIBUD calculate everything precisely.
Tot drie cijfers achter de comma.
Up to three decimal places.
What that means for everyone's income and position.
Maar dat zou met dit ook kunnen.
But that could also be done with this.
If we remove 2.4 billion from people living elsewhere.
En die van onze hulp afhankelijk zijn.
And those who depend on our help.
Of van onze internationale steun afhankelijk zijn.
Or depend on our international support.
Yes, if we take 2.4 billion away from people who live elsewhere. And who depend on our help.
Of van onze internationale steun afhankelijk zijn.
Or depend on our international support.
Those people are not going to stand on the Malieveld.
Die mensen gaan niet zeggen.
Those people are not going to say.
Er was mij onderwijs beloofd.
I was promised education.
Nu krijg ik het niet.
Now I can't get it.
A clinic for child care had been promised to me.
Maar die gaat niet door.
But that is not going to take place.
Those people can't stand on the Malieveld with a sign and protest.
En als mensen van die ontwikkelingshaan...
And if people from that development hen...
Dus we doen het.
So we're doing it.
And indeed, no rooster crows about it.
There is no one who says now you are touching my income.
Of nu kom je aan mijn perspectief.
Or now you come to my perspective.
Of nu kom je aan mijn gezondheid.
Or now you are coming to my health.
And those sounds do not resonate at all in Dutch society.
But apparently, no one thinks it's a problem that cuts are being made to development cooperation.
That will have to be revealed to some extent.
Er is natuurlijk best...
Of course, there is quite...
Zeker op lokaal niveau.
Certainly at the local level.
Zijn er best wel veel nog initiatieven.
There are still quite a few initiatives.
I'm not just pessimistic about it either.
Van mensen die wel degelijk bezig zijn.
Of people who are indeed occupied.
In de kerk, of in de wijk.
In the church, or in the neighborhood.
Of in hun gemeente.
Or in their municipality.
Met...
With...
And with international solidarity, if that old-fashioned word can still be used just one more time.
Ik gebruik dat nog steeds graag.
I still like to use that.
So I actually hope that something will start in the form of a movement of people who say, yes, but this is not what it was intended to be.
So actually, there might also be, well let me put it this way, is there some light at the end of this tunnel?
Maybe the cabinet will fall as soon as possible.
Misschien is dat wel een heel, ja.
Maybe that's quite a lot, yes.
How do you actually view that? Because it is of course very difficult to predict.
Ja, dat is moeilijk te voorspellen.
Yes, that is difficult to predict.
Wanneer valt het kabinet?
When does the cabinet fall?
If you ask, is there light at the end of the tunnel?
Well, then I think, I honestly say, I don't expect much from a cabinet in which, well, the PVV is a dominant party.
Dat blijkt uit het regeerprogramma.
That is evident from the government program.
But in the latest poll from last weekend, we also see the PVV again.
The PVV is rising, so you can hope that it will fall.
Ja, nou ja, goed.
Yes, well, good.
Dat is misschien inderdaad vooralsnog ijdele hoop.
That may indeed be a vain hope for now.
But I also know from politics that nothing is as changeable as the political climate.
But is the right so good or is the left so weak?
Well, I think the left can certainly blame itself for quite a few things too.
But yes, well, it is, we cannot deny that.
That the PVV has of course performed very well in the elections and has succeeded in telling people a story.
At least, yes, people, between 20 and 25 percent of the population is sensitive to that story of you don't have a home because of asylum seekers.
And the left-wing parties don't have a very strong answer to that, do they?
Nou ja, kennelijk niet een antwoord.
Well, apparently not an answer.
What can be framed, let's put it that way.
Yes, no, well, in any case, I mean, I can't make it any nicer than it is, of course.
It is true that the PVV is larger.
Look, we thought, if I may say we, that we had good chances with GroenLinks and P van de A to become the largest party in the Netherlands.
And then Timmermans would have taken the initiative in the formation, because that's how it works in the Netherlands.
And then we would have gotten a cabinet in which, at least, the PVV would not have been a part.
That would have brought a whole different sun to shine.
Zo is het niet gegaan.
That's not how it went.
GroenLinks has become the second party in the Netherlands.
En PVV is de grootste geworden.
And PVV has become the largest.
And yes, you can certainly see that reflected in this cabinet.
Dat is ook helemaal niet vreemd.
That is not strange at all.
Only if you ask, do you see any light at the end of the tunnel?
Then I say, well, maybe this cabinet won't last that long either.
Maar goed.
But well.
Voordat het heel veel kapot gemaakt heeft.
Before it has broken a lot.
Ja, oké, daar komen we sowieso nog even op terug.
Yes, okay, we'll definitely come back to that.
But I must emphasize that this podcast is called "With the Knowledge of Now."
Ja.
Yes.
Of course, the story from the left has been eroding for a long time.
And you naturally took over the baton in 2012.
U werd fractievoorzitter van GroenLinks.
You became the parliamentary leader of GroenLinks.
Waar is het verhaal van links gebleven?
Where has the story on the left gone?
Of waar is het eigenlijk fout gegaan?
Or where did it actually go wrong?
Yes, well, look, I think that varies a bit, I must say, depending on the party.
Look, I think that this applies to social democracy, to the Labour Party, for example,
that the collaboration with the VVD, of course, during the period,
during the period 2012-2017, a lot of harm was done.
So the fact that you are in a coalition, strangely enough, has all slipped away from Rutte.
Everything he has done wrong in the past years.
Yes, that has hardly any further effect on him, at least not.
But yes, it has of course almost designated the Labour Party.
Precimeert in ieder geval.
It certainly does.
And I wanted to say almost make it disappear, but that is a bit of an exaggeration.
So that is a fact that the left has had a very hard time.
If you take the PvdA and the left as one thing,
that it has struggled to survive that collaboration in coalitions.
At the same time, it is of course true that the classic support base of the left
in belangrijke mate niet meer bestaat.
largely no longer exists.
I really come from a classic red.
Nest, mijn vader was een fabrieksarbeider.
Well, my father was a factory worker.
He didn't want to hear a bad word about Joop den Uyl.
Dan had je ruzie aan tafel.
Then you had a fight at the table.
You didn't argue with my father easily, but you would if you said something negative about Joop den Uyl.
Wij lazen de varengids.
We read the fern guide.
He was a member of the Industrial Union the NVV.
Every three months, a gentleman from the workers' press would come to the door.
that brings the book you had to read to a lofty ideal of the
sociaaldemocratie inhoud te geven.
to give substance to social democracy.
De emancipatie van de keukentijd.
The emancipation of cooking time.
Dat bestaat niet meer.
That no longer exists.
So I can, I sometimes look back on that with a certain nostalgia.
I'm getting a bit older too, so that nostalgia sometimes starts to take over.
Maar dat bestaat simpelweg niet meer.
But that simply no longer exists.
Of course, the left has suffered from that over the years.
Is daardoor de machtsbasis van links geërodeerd.
Has the power base of the left been eroded as a result?
En ze hebben heel veel weggegeven.
And they have given away a lot.
Still, when you look at things like housing associations, they are all going to the market.
Ja, goed, dat is waar.
Yes, that's true.
Dus de hele paarse project.
So the whole purple project.
So it's about that collaboration with the VVD.
It has often been mentioned, of course, the shedding of ideological feathers.
That ultimately did not do the left in the Netherlands any good.
And other parties, including the mines, GroenLinks, have temporarily managed to peak.
This also applies to the SP, the high peaks, but they have not been able to maintain that.
Dat geldt ook voor GroenLinks.
That also applies to GroenLinks.
Our story, which is also more of a green and climate story, is also a left-wing solidarity story.
But also a story about solidarity with future generations.
Yes, Jesse Klaver in those grand halls like a sort of Trudeau.
Large halls, 3,500 people in the AFAS-5 in 2017, that was an amazing momentum.
But yes, that's also difficult to maintain.
So to answer the question one more time, yes, the left also has things.
fout gedaan.
made a mistake.
And that mistake lies in not being able to tell your new story in time.
Ja, en omdenken.
Yes, and think outside the box.
Not getting any further than still talking about Joop de Nile and discussing the elevations.
Well, you see, why it is interesting to talk about people like Joop de Nijl.
to talk, is because they showed a certain enthusiasm that almost transcended party boundaries
heen ging.
went away.
Kijk, Joop de Nijl slaagde erin.
Look, Joop de Nijl succeeded.
En we moeten inderdaad.
And we indeed have to.
We are looking at it with the knowledge of now, right, which was able to govern with what later became the CDA and ten
to win seats in 1977, right, and that happened because he was a kind of personal embodiment
It was a story that people thought he might not have fully realized.
He may have disappointed us over the past four years, but it will work out.
to speak with Rutte once from his fibers.
Ja.
Yes.
En dat moeten wij weer durven zijn.
And we must dare to be that again.
That party, yes, now GroenLinks PvdA, yes, with a yes, with an ideal or maybe.
An idealistic story tries to bind voters to itself, and that can happen, you know, I really am.
van overtuigd.
convinced.
Maar kan dat met Timmermans?
But can that be done with Timmermans?
Is Timmermans de nieuwe de Nijl?
Is Timmermans the new Nile?
Ja, tuurlijk kan dat.
Yes, of course that can be done.
That can be, because that does not depend, that depends, that does not solely depend on individuals.
Nee.
No.
The PvdA of Joop de Nijl was different, was a different PvdA than the PvdA of, uh, uh, yes,
Just say Diederik Samson and, um, Lodewijk Asscher, with all due respect of course for these.
twee inmiddels partijgenoten van mij.
two of my party colleagues by now.
Ja.
Yes.
Eh, but look, you can talk nicely about parties, but in the end it's really about
de verrechtsing in de Nederlandse samenleving.
the rightward shift in Dutch society.
Ja.
Yes.
En daar heeft links geen antwoord op.
And there is no answer from the left.
Right-wing shift and the fact that major parties are struggling in general, right?
Look, how much does the CDA still have?
Vijf, vijf zetels in de Tweede Kamer.
Five, five seats in the House of Representatives.
Vijf in de Kamer, ja.
Five in the Chamber, yes.
The VVD is no longer the party it used to be, so we also need to be careful, you know.
I mean, I'm going to go along with your questions, what has the left done wrong and what should the left do?
otherwise could do, but it is also a fact, I first came to the Second in 1993
Room, now we are talking about knowledge, with the knowledge of now.
Ja.
Yes.
Then the coalition had one hundred three, resting on one hundred three seats in the House of Representatives.
Die coalitie bestond uit twee partijen.
The coalition consisted of two parties.
Ongelooflijk hè.
Incredible, isn't it?
CDA, PvdA.
CDA, PvdA.
Het was het kabinet, Lubbers, Kok.
It was the cabinet, Lubbers, Kok.
And those two gentlemen together, along with their parties, had one hundred three seats in the House of Representatives.
Now you can be happy if you can form a cabinet with four parties, what a narrow majority.
is in the House of Representatives, and not in the Senate, because that is completely out of the question now.
in.
in.
Nee.
No.
So it has indeed become a completely different time, we have to acknowledge that, we can.
Not everywhere, I am also willing to do, what is it called, self-examination, but we also need to see.
dat er een bredere...
that there is a broader...
political trend that leads to fragmentation, to floating voters, who sometimes this
en de andere keer dat.
and the other time that.
And that fragmentation ensures that people keep switching parties.
to jump to another party, but what stands out to me is, for example, with the PVV, it is only that one
maar een stijging te zien, steeds.
but to see an increase, always.
Nu.
Now.
Ja, nu.
Yes, now.
En de laatste jaren ook.
And in recent years as well.
Ja.
Yes.
And I also think, for example, if we look at the government program, then they want to...
alles veranderen.
change everything.
But I also have the feeling that if that doesn't work, they can just continue to rise.
of niet?
or not?
Yes, no, look, the point is that all of that seems very unpredictable to me.
is geworden.
has become.
Of course, Wilders has also experienced tougher times with his PVV, the impressive thing about Wilders.
It's of course that he then again, you know, by always actually...
Ja.
Yes.
... by actually staying exactly the same and by not, yes, Wilders is in
z'n eentje, he, dus die heeft niet een partij of zo waarin die dingen moeten, he.
Just one, you know, so they don't have a party or anything where these things need to be, right?
Ja, die snel uitvergaat.
Yes, that quickly goes out.
He can just, precisely, so he can just keep telling the same story over and over again and
Then there comes a moment when that story gets better again, Wilders has completely undermined himself.
not changed, that still says exactly the same, maybe a bit sharper now, hey, just a bit more
harder.
harder.
Hij gebruikt nog iets grotere woorden.
He uses even bigger words.
But at its core, he is still telling the same story.
And now the tide is in their favor, this is a moment when people apparently feel uncertain.
en zoeken naar een verklaring, en, eh...
and looking for an explanation, and, um...
En naar een sterke leider.
And to a strong leader.
And, and, yes, and not a, an intellectual story like they have from Frans Timmermans.
get, with, with many reservations and ifs and buts, because the world is simply
how it is structured, but just a straightforward story that says, it is the fault of
the Islam, or from the foreigner, or from, uh...
Ja.
Yes.
We also spoke, uh, Mr. Jan Pronk, you also had the opportunity to work for him, who
said, eh, Mr. Timmermans should have just finished his job in Europe, that
deed hij hartstikke goed.
he did absolutely great.
Jesse Klaver, that is the man who actually combines GroenLinks and the Labour Party.
moet trekken.
must pull.
Because he appeals much more to the word, uh, the people, and also less in an intellectual way.
overkomt als Frans Timmermans.
happens as Frans Timmermans.
Ja.
Yes.
Well, I was in the committee last year, um, that, um, in the selection committee.
die Frans Timmermans heeft.
that Frans Timmermans has.
Voorgedragen aan de leden.
Presented to the members.
And that was indeed with the full conviction that we had someone in Timmermans who also
in staat zou zijn om, om, om, om, om, om Rutte op te volgen.
would be able to succeed Rutte.
Kijk, ik...
Look, I...
Qua structuur.
In terms of structure.
Look, if you, if you think about, I tried to imagine, well I'm talking about
Last summer, huh, with your knowledge, about last summer.
Ja.
Yes.
Eh...
Eh...
Er was een hele generatie inmiddels opgestaan.
A whole generation had now risen.
Grown up in the Netherlands, they had only ever experienced a right-wing prime minister.
First eight years of Balkenende, something like that seemed much longer, but it was eight years, eh, then...
inmiddels dertien jaar Rutte, hè.
It's been thirteen years of Rutte, huh.
So twenty, twenty-one years of only a right-wing prime minister.
Ik vo...
I vo...
Ik spreek nu even puur voor mezelf.
I'm speaking purely for myself now.
I found it very important that we would come up with a candidate that people could relate to.
could imagine that he would succeed Rutte.
That the left candidate was, our candidate was, a green-left P van de A candidate.
Ja.
Yes.
And Frans Timmermans, he had an impressive track record in Europe, that will be Jan Pronk.
ongetwijfeld ook bevestigen.
undoubtedly also confirm.
Daarom wilde hij dat hij bleef.
That's why he wanted him to stay.
He had achieved something in terms of the rule of law, in terms of
the green, what do you call it, the Green Deal, right, so that was also a green candidate that
that was also acceptable for many GroenLinks members, right, he was a P van de A, but he
was ook voor GroenLinksers acceptabel.
was also acceptable for GroenLinks members.
Ja, met een groen hart.
Yes, with a green heart.
And that green heart was important at that moment, because the cabinet had suddenly fallen and
we suddenly needed someone, the most sensitive point in all of politics is who
wordt de leider?
who is the leader?
A program and so, you will all figure that out together eventually, but who will become
nou de leider?
Well, the leader?
You have two parties and they suddenly have to prepare for elections, because no one
had still predicted the fall of the cabinet on July seventh, because everyone
was on vacation, suitcases were already packed.
Het kabinet viel.
The cabinet fell.
Oh, now we really need to have a leader.
Well, Frans Timmermans was undoubtedly a suitable candidate, and I still believe that.
But did you call him or did he call you?
No, it is indeed, I know that, to be honest it is also partly through the party administrator.
gegaan.
gone.
I believe that he was not the one who called, it was that he became, after we with this.
the kind of considerations that I am just trying to outline a bit.
Ja.
Yes.
I thought, yes, it would really be very good if Frans Timmermans were to be on that list.
would like to run, would like to become the lead candidate, of course, I was there myself
niet bij.
not with.
But did people go to Brussels and say to Frans, would you
naar Nederland willen komen?
want to come to the Netherlands?
And then he said yes and then, to be honest, we were very happy, so I can now well
saying yes, he may not be the most suitable candidate, but that would be a bit
raar zijn.
to be strange.
Dus kijk wat Jan Pronk kennelijk zegt.
So look at what Jan Pronk apparently says.
Well, Jesse Klaver, I am a big fan of Jesse Klaver, so I find it difficult when
I have to compare the two with each other, right, to then say no, but I am for French.
Timmermans.
Timmermans.
But yes, that was the best choice at that moment, I think.
Zeker, zeker, zeker.
Sure, sure, sure.
But you assume it and you also hope that the cabinet will make a decision quickly.
Ja.
Yes.
Dan komt er weer een campagne.
Then another campaign is coming.
Ja.
Yes.
Dan is weer Frans Timmermans daar.
Then Frans Timmermans is there again.
Nou, dat weet ik niet.
Well, I don't know that.
Then a new consideration must be made, not by me I think, because
daar zijn andere mensen weer daarbij betrokken.
there are other people involved in this again.
En dan weet ik niet of dat...
And then I don't know if that...
I don't know if Timmermans wants that himself either.
I don't know if party boards might then say, well, now we're going to be a bit more open.
We have had referendums in the past as well, how do you say that?
Daar ben ik zelf voorstander van.
I myself am in favor of that.
Om leden te laten kiezen.
To let members choose.
Ik vind dat heel goed, hè.
I think that's very good, you know.
Partijen zijn verenigingen van leden.
Parties are associations of members.
Look at the CDA, it has also been such a fantastic election.
No, that's not always a great success.
But I think, you know, I don't see that as an argument, right?
In parliamentary elections, there are sometimes parties that become the largest that I don't really...
I think it's great, but I do support free parliamentary elections.
And so I also think that the members, that is a good argument, huh, I'm thinking of that now, on the spot,
So I also find that members, I mean, I myself have been for the majority of my life.
just a member, I became a member of the PPR in 72 because I wanted to have a say as a member.
in die partij.
in that party.
So I believe that members should be able to choose that, and I don't mind at all if there are more.
kandidaten zijn.
candidates are.
And the PPR ultimately merged into GroenLinks.
Zo is het.
That's how it is.
What can they learn from you about a real merger between GroenLinks and the Party of?
de Arbeid?
the Labor?
Well, yes, maybe quite a few things still.
The most important thing might be that I discuss what was heavily debated.
"When we had the merger in '89, it was about trying to get the Dutch to..."
to prevent the new party from simply being a sum of the old parties, just to put it that way
te zeggen.
to say.
And there was Paul Rosemuller as an independent candidate, please.
Yes, that didn't work at first, because we had, we had Ria Bekkers, we had Ina Brouwer,
we had André van Es, who all did not want to give way immediately.
Alle oude partijleiders.
All old party leaders.
No, they said we want to be at the top of that list, so we had Paul Rosemuller.
pas op plek vier.
just in fourth place.
Paul Rosemuller werd pas lijsttrekker en partijleider.
Paul Rosemuller became the lead candidate and party leader.
Ja.
Yes.
Ja, en Paul Rosemuller werd partijleider in 1994.
Yes, and Paul Rosemuller became party leader in 1994.
Daarna.
After that.
In 1994.
In 1994.
Ja.
Yes.
Nadat we eigenlijk twee teleurstellende verkiezingen hadden gedaan.
After we actually had two disappointing elections.
We hadden een eerste verkiezing, was eigenlijk teleurstellend, in 89 hadden we zes zetels.
We had an initial election, which was actually disappointing; in '89 we had six seats.
De tweede.
The second.
Rabba Brouwer.
Rabba Brewer.
Was actually even more disappointing, with Brouwer and Rabba.
Toch met die borstvestelijden ze ook.
Yet they also do with that chest vest.
Toen hadden we namelijk maar 5 zetels, terwijl we dachten dat we zouden gaan doorgroeien.
At that time, we only had 5 seats, while we thought we would continue to grow.
Then Paul Rosemuller came, and that was of course not only because of him.
Maar toen hadden we in 98 ineens 11 zetels.
But then in '98 we suddenly had 11 seats.
Then we became a new party in the vision of the country.
We became a new party for a lot of people then.
snap je, en dat vind ik
do you understand, and I think that's
dat wordt interessant, wat mij betreft
That will be interesting, as far as I'm concerned.
voor GroenLinks PvdA
for GroenLinks PvdA
wordt het uiteindelijk
will it ultimately be
because we will probably continue with that collaboration
er komen nu gemeenteraadsverkiezingen
There are municipal council elections coming up now.
sommige gemeenten zullen het wel doen
some municipalities will indeed do it
others do not, that's how it goes in such a process
dat kost altijd tijd
that always takes time
het is helemaal niet erg
it's not a problem at all
maar wordt het uiteindelijk iets nieuws
but in the end, will it become something new
een nieuwe linkse groene
a new left-wing green
beweging die inderdaad mensen weer weet
a movement that indeed knows how to reconnect people
aan te spreken, of wordt het
to address, or will it be
uiteindelijk een optelsom van twee
ultimately a sum of two
partijen
parties
waarvan de een, nou ja
of which one, well
klein geworden is, na heel lang
has become small, after a very long time
groot geweest te zijn, de PvdA
to have been great, the PvdA
en de ander iets groter geworden
and the other has become somewhat larger
is, after having been small for a very long time
So at some point you would also go to another
naam moeten, want dat is een bewijs
name must, because that is proof
I don't find GroenLinks PvdA to be the most...
sexy naam die er is
sexy name that exists
het is al van alfabet ongeveer, toch?
It's already been about the alphabet, right?
ja, nee, dat moet zeker ook
yes, no, that definitely has to be too
There definitely belongs another name with it.
maar ik weet niet
but I don't know
welke naam daarbij hoort
which name goes with it
maar we hebben
but we have
in de campagne een beetje Verenigd Links
in the campaign a little United Left
werd er al wat mee
was anything done with it
ja, die groen je af en toe, toch?
Yes, you green them occasionally, right?
but yes, then that's where that green isn't in again
dus dan zeggen GroenLinksers van nou
so then GroenLinks members say well
Verenigd Links, Verenigd Links
United Left, United Left
I think it's quite nice, but it's not that green.
en de heer Prong
and Mr. Prong
zei ook van je moet ook andere
she also said you should also do other things
linkse partijen
leftist parties
ja, dat weet ik
Yes, I know that.
dat hij dat ook vindt
that he thinks so too
dat
that
, ja, dat stuit heel vaak op
Yes, that often comes up.
op
on
op ingewikkelde praktische bezwaren
on complicated practical objections
vind ik, niet zozeer op inhoudelijke bezwaren
I think so, not so much on substantive objections.
maar ja, ik heb zelf ook
but yes, I have myself too
ja, bijvoorbeeld met de SP
Yes, for example with the SP.
best wel veel geprobeerd samen te werken
We have certainly tried to work together a lot.
in de Tweede Kamer
in the House of Representatives
well, that is a bit the point, we can certainly say
want ik weet ook
because I also know
van de tijd
of the time
dat
that
Jesse Klaver onze partijleider was
Jesse Klaver our party leader was
that he spoke a lot with the Party for the Animals
dat hij veel sprak met Lilian Marantz
that he talked a lot with Lilian Marantz
Rijnissen van de SP
Rijnissen of the SP.
it is not always the case that it is up to us
to say who we all want to collaborate with
die partijen zeggen
those parties say
denk is een afsplitsing uit de PvdA
Denk is a split from the PvdA.
hè
hey
Partij voor de Dieren is eigenlijk opgericht
The Party for the Animals was actually founded.
because they felt that GroenLinks did too little for animals
aan dierenwaardigheid deed
contributed to animal welfare
of aan diervriendelijkheid deed
or to animal friendliness did
aan dierenrechten deed
did to animal rights
The SP was actually founded because they did not find the PvdA socialist enough.
dus wij kunnen wel zeggen dat
so we can say that
I hear Jan Pronk say very often.
and I am a great admirer of Jan Pronk
maar op dit punt
but at this point
heb je wel twee nodig
do you really need two?
I am not so optimistic that the others want that.
We definitely shouldn't wait for that.
because when you look at that merger again
or at least towards the development towards the merger
heb ik het idee dat
I have the idea that
Jesse Klaver is eigenlijk de allergrootste voorstander geweest daarvan
Jesse Klaver has actually been the biggest proponent of that.
die heeft het bijna eigenlijk bedacht
he actually came up with it nearly.
and then he more or less called the PvdA.
laat ik het zo zeggen
let me put it this way
die heeft veel gedaan
that has done a lot
vanaf 2015
from 2015
om dat zeg maar te realiseren
to make that happen, so to speak
ja zeker
yes certainly
en dat is eigenlijk
and that is actually
u bent de tovenaar
you are the wizard
hij is de leerling
he is the student
dus ik kan me zo voorstellen
so I can imagine that
is dat een compliment
Is that a compliment?
dat ik dan denk
that I then think
misschien heeft u dat samen wel bedacht
maybe you came up with that together
dat dat zo zou moeten
that it should be like that
ik heb in
I have in

name mentioning, which you probably know well.
Uit uw lange politieke carrière.
From your long political career.
De heer Dick Schoof.
Mr. Dick Schoof.
Onze minister-president. Nou,
Our prime minister. Well,
die ken ik niet zo heel goed. Die heb
I don't know that one very well. That one has...
ik in de tijd dat ik
I in the time that I
fractievoorzitter was, was hij
As faction leader, he was
Nationaal Coördinator
National Coordinator
Terrorisme en
Terrorism and
CTV en Veiligheid.
CTV and Safety.

Dus we kwamen elkaar wel eens tegen.
So we would run into each other sometimes.

Dat is namelijk wat je

does all day long.
Wat is het voor man? Aardig, vriendelijk.
What kind of man is he? Nice, friendly.
Goed.
Good.
Niet anders eigenlijk dan

u hem nu op televisie ziet?
do you see him on television now?
Nee, ik vind
No, I think
dat hij nu ook vriendelijk

overkomt. Maar ja,
it happens. But yes,
ik zie ook wel iemand

die toch wel eens opgesloten
that might well be locked up
zit in een kurslijf.
sits in a corset.
And of course, he chose that himself.
Van deze coalitie
From this coalition
en deze vier partijen.
and these four parties.
We hadden het in het begin van ons gesprek over die
We talked about that at the beginning of our conversation.
gigantische uitvergrote aandacht
gigantic enlarged attention
voor asiel.
for asylum.
Zelfs als je migratie het allerbelangrijkste
Even if your migration is the most important thing.
onderwerp vindt, dan is asiel binnen
if you find a subject, then asylum is within
de totale migratie
the total migration
nou 15 procent.
Well, 15 percent.
Dan overdrijf ik het al. Dus 15 procent
Then I'm exaggerating. So 15 percent.
of the migrants who arrive here in the Netherlands
zijn asielzoekers.
are asylum seekers.
So even if migration were the most important thing
that's just such a small part of it.
Ik kan me...
I can...
Kijk, Dick Schoof lijkt me een hele
Look, Dick Schoof seems to me a whole
rationeel denkende man. Niet een
rational thinking man. Not a
hele grote ideoloog,
very big ideologist,
maar wel iemand die gewoon
but someone who just
rationeel en zakelijk
rational and businesslike
goed kan nadenken. Ik kan me niet voorstellen
can think well. I can't imagine
dat hij asiel het allergrootste
that he asylum the largest
en belangrijkste onderwerp van de wereld.
and the most important topic in the world.
vindt. Kan ik me gewoon niet voorstellen.
finds. I just can't imagine.
Dat zegt hij, omdat hij dat van
That is what he says because he does that from
Geert Wilders moet zeggen. Ja. Daarom zegt
Geert Wilders has to say. Yes. That's why he says.
he does not do that because he thinks so himself. I believe that.
just not. But how can that be, that he is there then
en dat zo'n verstandig mens zakelijk
and that such a wise person is businesslike
dan... Omdat hij ja heeft gezegd tegen
then... Because he said yes to
deze constructie, tegen het premierschap.
this construction, against the premiership.
Dus dan schrijft hij in die buis.
So then he writes in that tube.
Ja, dat
Yes, that.
is onvermijdelijk. Ik neem aan als hij
is inevitable. I assume if he
hier...
here...
I assume he is discussing that request.
dat krijg je.
you get that.
Als je daar maar 10 minuten over nadenkt,
If you think about it for just 10 minutes,
Do you already know that, yes, the PVV is the largest?
partij met 37 zetels. Veel
party with 37 seats. A lot
groter dan de andere drie
larger than the other three
coalitiepartijen. Hij zegt... Ik
coalition parties. He says... I
moet doen wat de PVV wil.
must do what the PVV wants.
Hij zegt, mensen ervaren dit
He says, people experience this.
als een groot probleem. Ja, maar
as a big problem. Yes, but
toen werd de vraag gesteld, ervaart u
then the question was asked, do you experience
dit ook als een groot probleem?
is this also a big problem?
And then he started to stutter a little bit,
volgens mij, toch? Ja, toen
I think so, right? Yes, then.
werd het wat... Ik denk dat hij gelijk heeft
Did it happen... I think he's right.
dat mensen dit als een groot... Althans, zeker
that people see this as a big... At least, certainly
die kwart van de
that quarter of the
bevolking die op de PVV
population that supports the PVV
bijna heeft gestemd, ja, die ervaarden
almost voted, yes, they experienced
dit als een heel groot probleem. Dat kunnen we
this is a very big problem. We can do that.
moeilijk ontkennen. Ja. Dus daar heeft
hard to deny. Yes. So there has
Dick Schoof natuurlijk gewoon gelijk in. Maar
Dick Schoof naturally agrees immediately. But
hij komt nu met dit regeerprogramma.
He is now coming out with this government program.
Zonder titel. Niet die mensen,
Without title. Not those people,
hij komt met dit regeerprogramma.
he comes with this government program.
Geen titel staat erop. Wat voor titel
No title is on it. What kind of title?
Should it actually have to be, as far as you're concerned?
Ja, wat had... Hoe heette dat ook
Yes, what was... What was that called again?
weer? LEF? Wat was het ook alweer? Wat we
again? GUTS? What was it again? What we
hadden eerst met het regeer...
first had with the government...
Ja, drie woorden. Hoe heet dat? Met het hoofdlijnenakkoord?
Yes, three words. What's that called? With the framework agreement?
Ja, een LEF en dan nog twee.
Yes, a LEF and then two more.
Ja, dus...
Yes, so...
Ik ben bang dat het iets van een kat in de zak
I'm afraid it's something like a pig in a poke.
of zo zou moeten heten. Ik ben heel bang

dat het mensen iets voorspiegelt
that it mirrors something for people

to think for the people.
Veel mensen denken
Many people think
kennelijk, hè,
evidently, huh,
dat je door die...
that you through that...
As a figure of speech, if you close the borders,
Then we can soon get a house.
en dan
and then
verdienen we
do we deserve
misschien meer geld. Maar ik ben
maybe more money. But I am
zo bang dat mensen daarin weer

will happen. So it's a cat in the bag.
But we are going to Europe and then we will talk.
and then the farmers and the asylum, everything
wordt gered. Ja, nou ja, goed.
is saved. Yes, well, okay.
Werkt dat zo? Nee, dat denk
Does it work that way? No, I don't think so.
ik niet. En dat zal...
not me. And that will...
Ook bij landbouw willen we van alles
In agriculture too, we want everything.
inderdaad regelen.
indeed arrange.
Dat zal helemaal niet lukken.
That won't work at all.
Bij asiel is er net, eigenlijk

Het idee is juist van als landen

hot, get.
Wat Nederland wil, is een
What the Netherlands wants is a
allijngang. Nederland wil zeggen,
alliance. Netherlands wants to say,
wij willen een uitzonderingspositie binnen
we want an exceptional position within
Europa.
Europe. Yes, then all the countries think, maybe we all want that.
wel. Maar dat doen we nou juist niet.
Well. But that's exactly what we don't do.
Het is een...
It is a...
Het is echt zo'n
It's really such a
prisoners dilemma, van als je met
prisoners dilemma, from when you are with
zo'n... Als je samenwerkt,
such a... If you work together,
bereik je meer, maar
achieve more, but
iedereen wil niet... wil voor
everyone doesn't want... wants for
zichzelf iets. En als je dat doet,
something to yourself. And if you do that,
Then you all have less.
Nou ja, je snapt wat ik bedoel.
Well, you understand what I mean.
Ja, ik snap het heel goed. En dat
Yes, I understand it very well. And that
is also so interesting, because I also understand
wat u uitlegt over dat migratie
What you explain about that migration
zo groot is beschreven in de telegeerprogramma.
so large is described in the teleworking program.
And that the asylum is really just a small part.
van is. In werkelijkheid, ja. Maar waarom
from is. In reality, yes. But why
legt niemand dat verhaal dan goed uit?
Doesn't anyone explain that story properly?
Nou,
Well,
ik hoop dat... We zitten nu
I hope that... We are now
aan de vooravond van de Algemene Beschouwing.
on the eve of the General Discussion.
I am really counting a bit on French.
Timmermans en Rob Jetten.

Maar het kabinet is een jaar geleden

gevallen over asiel. En eigenlijk
cases regarding asylum. And actually
heeft niemand een goed tegenverhaal
doesn't anyone have a good counterstory
laten horen of vertellen.
let us hear or tell.
Nee, nou ja. Dan kan
No, well. Then it can.
ik wel zeggen, dat hebben we natuurlijk
I can certainly say that we have that, of course.
wel geprobeerd. En
well tried. And
ja, we moeten ook
Yes, we also have to.
onszelf weer niet helemaal
not completely ourselves again
geestelen met
messing around with
dat we alles fout hebben gedaan.
that we did everything wrong.
That's certainly a hobby of leftist movements, isn't it? Yeah, exactly.
So I'm trying to take it a bit slow now...
I have been with you for a long time, but now I'm trying.
ik toch een beetje langzamerhand
I'm gradually becoming a bit slower.
wat tegenvuur te geven.
to give counterfire.
We hebben natuurlijk wel degelijk

dat verhaal verteld. En dat is natuurlijk...
that story told. And that is of course...
We moeten ook niet...
We should also not...

zo slecht. Nee. En kennelijk
so bad. No. And apparently
zijn er toch heel veel mensen, en
there are still a lot of people, and

Volt, of... Nou,
Volt, or... Well,
I might forget a few more of those.
Dus,
So,
ja, het is een
yes, it is a
ideeënstrijd,
ideological struggle,
waarin we nog een tandje
in which we still need to step it up a notch
erbij moeten zetten, om
to add to it, in order to
ons verhaal nog
our story still
duidelijker bij mensen
clearer to people
voor het voetlicht
in the limelight
te krijgen. En ook
to get. And also
te luisteren naar de zorgen die mensen
to listen to the concerns that people have
to have. And that is always said, but I am
ik het ook heel erg mee eens. Goed, te

daar iets aan doen. Dus je moet de PVV
do something about it. So you have to deal with the PVV.
aanvallen, maar je moet de kiezers
attack, but you have to reach the voters
van de PVV, en de zorgen die ze
from the PVV, and the concerns they
hebben, wel serieus nemen, natuurlijk.
have, take seriously, of course.
En daar kunnen we ook nog
And there we can also still
wel wat, een tandje erbij doen,
well, let's step it up a notch,
denk ik. Dus dat, als je dat doet,
I think so. So that, if you do that,
nou, nogmaals, het is een ideeënstrijd.
Well, once again, it's a battle of ideas.
Het wordt een super interessante
It will be super interesting.
tijd. En, ja,
time. And, yes,
nogmaals, voor mij behoeft
once again, for me it requires
this cabinet won't stay for very long, but
die ideeënstrijd, die zal daarmee niet
that struggle of ideas, that will not
voorbij zijn. Als het kabinet valt, dan gaat
over. If the cabinet falls, then it is over.
die strijd gewoon door, natuurlijk.
that fight just continues, of course.
En dat is ook goed. Dat gaat er,
And that is also good. That will happen,
zo. En dan, als dat kabinet volgens
So. And then, if that cabinet according to
you fall quickly, then we certainly hope for everything. Well, I hope
dat het snel valt, hè. Ik weet niet of het snel
that it falls quickly, huh. I don't know if it quickly
valt. Tegen die tijd, is
falls. By that time, is
dat, in die ideeënstrijd,
that, in that battle of ideas,
dat andere verhaal, wel
that other story, yes
een tandje beter?
A notch better?
Nou, ik heb nieuws voor je. Dat verhaal
Well, I have news for you. That story
is best wel goed. Ja,
is quite good. Yes,
You just said, it needs to be a notch.
beter. Nou, we moeten,
better. Well, we have to,
we hebben dat,
we have that,
we hebben, als je dat
we have, if you do that
woord ideeënstrijd even aanhoudt, we zijn
word ideas struggle just persists, we are
er niet in geslaagd, om dat verhaal,
failed to tell that story,
heel overtuigend
very convincing
te laten zijn. Althans,
to let be. At least,
die ander was net iets
the other one was just a bit
overtuigender. Ja, die schreeuwde harder.
more convincing. Yes, that screamed louder.
But I have to be honest, if I, and I,
ik ben heel graag bereid om daar
I am very willing to do that.
over te discussiëren, maar als
to discuss, but if
I now also look again at what.
we vorig jaar in ons verkiezingsprogramma
we last year in our election program
wrote it down, then you can say, yeah, who reads now
een verkiezingsprogramma? Dat is waar, hè, wie leest nou
An election program? That's true, right, who reads that anyway?

written down, then I think, well, that is
helemaal zo gek nog niet. Alleen, we zijn
not so crazy after all. Only, we are
he apparently failed to do so, and that must
een tandje beter. We zijn er niet
a notch better. We're not there yet.
in geslaagd om de mensen
succeeded in the people
het gevoel te geven, ja, maar we
to give the feeling, yes, but we
iedereen, we nemen jullie zorgen
Everyone, we take your concerns.
wel degelijk serieus. Het lijkt nu
Indeed serious. It seems now
dat, doordat wij zeggen
that, because we say
asielzoekers zijn welkom,
asylum seekers are welcome,
als ze echt
if they really
bescherming nodig hebben, dat we daarmee
need protection, that we thereby
the concerns of people who cannot find housing
vinden, niet serieus nemen, hè. Dat is toch
finding, not taking seriously, right? That is just
een beetje nu het beeld. Ja, dat is
a little bit of the image now. Yes, that is
heel anders dan politiek dan vroeger. Dat moeten we proberen te doorbreken.
Very different from politics than before. We need to try to break through that.
En dat is ons niet gelukt.
And we didn't succeed in that.
En als daardoor ons verhaal
And if as a result our story
for asylum otherwise must, then we must also do that
toe bereid zijn. Maar ik denk dat dat verhaal best
ready to do so. But I think that story is quite
is, zou kunnen blijven staan.
is, could remain standing.
Nou ja, we hadden het al heel even over
Well, we had just talked about it for a moment.
de heer Schoof. Ja, de heer Schoof, ja.
Mr. Schoof. Yes, Mr. Schoof, yes.
Maar ik wil nog even
But I just want to...
another person, because yes, you also have
roerige tijden meegemaakt, en ik kan me
experienced turbulent times, and I can remember
imagining that you were also sometimes cooking from within,
but you always remained very calm and serene.
Dat was nu eigenlijk, toch?
That was actually it, wasn't it?
Wat zijn nu uw adviezen
What are your recommendations now?
voor Pieter Omtzigt?
for Pieter Omtzigt?
Nou, ik zou zeggen
Well, I would say
Pieter Omtzigt moet heel goed
Pieter Omtzigt must be very good.
uitrusten en uitzieken, want
resting and recovering, because
kijk, we moeten daar
Look, we need to go there.
dat wel
that indeed
serieus nemen. Hij heeft natuurlijk eerder
take seriously. He has of course done this before.
een tijdje
a while
zich teruggetrokken,
withdrawn,
vanwege een burn-out.
due to a burnout.
He has always been open and honest about that.
Dat valt zeer in hem te prijzen.
That is very commendable of him.
Nu heeft hij ook gezegd, ik moet
Now he has also said, I must
een tijdje rust nemen. Kijk, het is heel verleidelijk,
taking a break for a while. Look, it's very tempting,
Well, Pieter Omtzigt, of course, my advice is not needed.
Het is heel verleidelijk om snel
It's very tempting to hurry.
want yes, that is being
gebeld en iedereen zit te wachten.
Called and everyone is waiting.
En het land moet
And the country must
bestuurd worden en zo.
be governed and so on.
Maar ik denk toch, hoe clichématig
But I still think, no matter how cliché it may be.
ook dat klinkt, er gaat
that also sounds, there goes
niks boven je gezondheid. En je kunt
Nothing is more important than your health. And you can
zomaar, ik heb inderdaad
Just like that, I indeed have.
ik weet wel ongeveer de druk
I have a rough idea of the pressure.
waaraan je in Den Haag blootstaat.
what you are exposed to in The Hague.
En hij heeft dat nog in extreme,
And he still has that to an extreme.
veel extremere mate gehad dan
had a much more extreme degree than
ik het ooit heb meegemaakt.
I have ever experienced.
And that pressure has definitely increased, right?
Ja, precies. Dus daarom
Yes, exactly. So that's why.
I say, I already know from my experience.
dat die druk groot kan zijn.
that the pressure can be great.
Let alone how it is now and with him.
But how did you keep the peace within yourself?
Ja, ik weet,
Yes, I know,
Maybe that has to do with character as well, you know.
Maar kijk, ik werd
But look, I was
fractievoorzitter toen was ik al
I was already the faction leader then.
59, bijna 60.
59, almost 60.
Ik had
I had
eigenlijk al niet meer gedacht
actually not thought about it anymore
dat ik ook nog een politieke carrière
that I also have a political career
zou hervatten.
would resume.
Dus dat scheelt natuurlijk wel.
So that makes a difference, of course.
Het heeft ook, zeg ik,
It also has, I say,
it may have something to do with character,
but it also has to do with the phase
in je leven waarin je in de politiek komt.
in your life when you enter politics.
Als ik terugdenk aan de eerste keer
When I think back to the first time
dat ik in de Tweede Kamer zat
that I was in the House of Representatives
in 1993,
in 1993,
toen ik alles echt supergoed wilde doen
when I really wanted to do everything super well
en dacht dat dit het allerbelangrijkste was
and thought that this was the most important thing
wat je in je leven kon doen.
what you could do in your life.
En bol stond
And a ball was there.
from the tension when I had to do a debate.
En ik vergelijk dat met
And I compare that with
2012,
2012,
toen ik weer terugkwam.
when I came back again.
En ja, toch sadder
And yes, still sadder.
en wiser.
and wiser.
Dat ik in 20 jaar
That I in 20 years
een ontwikkeling had doorgemaakt.
had undergone a development.
Ja, was het
Yes, it was.
voor mij niet zo moeilijk.
Not so difficult for me.
Dus ik heb altijd wel gezegd,
So I have always said,
People often ask how did you do that?
Yes, I had it a bit easy to talk.
Ik was al, nogmaals, ik werd 60
I was already, once again, I turned 60.
in die tijd.
in that time.
Dus niet heel oud.
So not very old.
And it was of course also at a moment
that it really couldn't get any worse for GroenLinks.
Dus u kon alleen maar winnen.
So you could only win.
Dat is absoluut waar.
That is absolutely true.
Alleen die stekker hoefde er nog uit.
Only that plug still needed to be removed.
Only in such a way that when I, I became
fractievoorzitter in oktober
faction leader in October
2012.
2012.
En toen hadden we nog vier zetels.
And then we had four seats left.
Maar, ik zal nooit
But, I will never
vergeten dat ik in

talk. And that he said,
hij weet het zelf waarschijnlijk niet meer,
he probably doesn't remember it himself anymore,
nu moet je uitkijken, want jullie zijn
Now you need to be careful, because you are
bijna niet meer te meten. Dus toen
almost impossible to measure anymore. So then
waren we van vier zetels.
we were four seats.
Want mensen denken altijd vier zetels.
Because people always think four seats.
Maar toen ik begon, werd het drie,

Dat snap je wel. Misschien nog een klein beetje.
You understand that well. Maybe just a little bit more.
Toen gingen we nog verder naar beneden.
Then we went even further down.
Zo D66, die op nul stond.
So D66, which was at zero.
And then of course I felt the pressure.
You could say, yes, it couldn't be worse.
Nou ja, het kon wel slechter.
Well, it could be worse.
Want in de peiling van Maurice
Because in Maurice's poll
gingen we van vier naar drie.
we went from four to three.
Alleen dat wist op dat moment niemand.
At that moment, no one knew that.
Want die peilingen werden niet elke week

gepubliceerd, zo vlak na de verkiezingen.
published, just after the elections.

you are no longer measurable.
Dan kom je in de categorie overige.
Then you fall into the category of others.
Dus dan wordt GroenLinks niet meer gemeld
So then GroenLinks will no longer be reported.

in the statistics. So that conversation,

That made a big impression on me.

bijzetten. Het keerpunt de hond.
Adding. The turning point the dog.
En toen is het toch wel, nou ja,
And then it is, well,
toen is het langzaam en zeker.
then it is slowly and surely.
In het begin ging het heel slecht.
At the beginning, it went very poorly.
Ik kon het ook nog niet.
I couldn't do it yet either.
Je kunt ook niet zomaar,
You also can't just,
dat doen. Dus je wordt

En je bent ineens, je moet ineens

exciting of course.

Again this morning. Yes, did you see that come by?
Heel fijn, heel goed. Die Zwetsprijs niet meer.
Very nice, very good. That Zwetsprijs no more.
Maar ik moest ook wel lachen,
But I had to laugh as well,

Indeed separate. Yes, that was very peculiar, yes.
Ja, dat was apart, ja.
Yes, that was apart, yes.
