Dit is het verhaal van een kleine jongen uit Kattenburg.

This is the story of a small boy from Kattenburg.

Met een grote droom.

With a big dream.

Ik dacht van ja, astronauten, dat waren een soort supermensen, Amerikaanse testpiloten.

I thought, yes, astronauts, they were a kind of superhumans, American test pilots.

De aarde zien.

To see the earth.

Vanuit de ruimte.

From space.

Een droom die werkelijkheid werd.

A dream that became reality.

Tegen alle verwachtingen in.

Against all odds.

Dat is niet iets voor een Nederlands jongetje.

That's not something for a Dutch boy.

Ik droeg een bril en ik dacht van ja, Nederland bestond eruit.

I wore glasses and I thought, yes, the Netherlands consisted of that.

Het was helemaal niet.

It was not at all.

In Europa bestond het niet eens.

It didn't even exist in Europe.

Dit is het verhaal van André Kuipers.

Ik droom van een astronaut die...

I dream of an astronaut who...

had op een gegeven moment een hoop, een kans.

At one point, I had a lot, a chance.

En dan ben je op een gegeven moment klaar.

And then at some point you are done.

Je hebt examens gedaan.

You have taken exams.

Hele lange reis.

Very long journey.

Voor mij was dat 33 jaar.

For me, that was 33 years.

33 jaar vanaf het eerste moment dat ik mijn boekjes kreeg van mijn oma.

33 years since the first moment I received my little books from my grandmother.

Tot het moment dat je daadwerkelijk...

Until the moment that you actually...

gaat lanceren.

is about to launch.

En de enige angst die je eigenlijk dan hebt...

And the only fear you actually have then...

is dat het niet doorgaat.

is that it won't take place.

Je bent niet meteen heel zwaar in je stoel gedrukt.

You're not pushed very hard into your chair right away.

Die raket is met heel veel gewicht.

That rocket is very heavy.

Dus het duurt even voordat hij echt gaat versnellen.

So it takes a while before he really starts to accelerate.

En dat gebeurt als de luchtlagen wat dunner worden.

And that happens when the air layers become a bit thinner.

Op zo'n 80 kilometer of zo.

About 80 kilometers or so.

De eerste klap die je voelt is het wegvallen van de opduurraketten.

The first blow you feel is the loss of the ascent rockets.

40 kilometer, 45 kilometer.

40 kilometers, 45 kilometers.

Dan op 80 kilometer gaat het omhulsel erover.

Then at 80 kilometers, the casing goes over it.

Dan kan je dus naar buiten kijken.

Then you can look outside.

Dat was heel bijzonder.

That was very special.

Want bij mij kwam de zon naar binnen.

Because the sun came in for me.

Dus ik kon niet eens kijken.

So I couldn't even look.

Maar mijn collega was Mike Fink.

But my colleague was Mike Fink.

Een Amerikaanse collega.

An American colleague.

Dat was ook zijn eerste vlucht.

That was also his first flight.

We waren alle twee beginners.

We were both beginners.

En hij zei, Andre, look.

And he said, Andre, look.

Dus ik draai mijn hoofd om.

So I turn my head.

En toen kon ik door het raampje naast zijn hoofd...

And then I could through the window next to his head...

zag ik ineens die blauwe kroeming van de aarde.

I suddenly saw that blue curvature of the Earth.

En daarna zwart.

And then black.

En dat is een hele gekke combinatie.

And that is a really strange combination.

Dat ben je niet gewend.

You're not used to that.

Of zwart.

Or black.

Of het is blauw.

Or it is blue.

Maar die samenwerking, dat was heel apart om te zien.

But that collaboration was very special to see.

Ik denk, ja, ik kijk nu.

I think, yes, I am looking now.

Ik zit in de ruimte en ik kijk naar die aarde.

I am in space and I am looking at that Earth.

Een heel bijzonder moment.

A very special moment.

Heel weinig tijd heb je daar maar voor.

You have very little time for that.

Want je moet je meteen weer concentreren op die taken.

Because you have to immediately focus again on those tasks.

Kijken of die lampjes aangaan of uitgaan.

Check whether those lights turn on or off.

Enzovoort.

And so on.

Maar dat was een heel bijzonder moment.

But that was a very special moment.

Want dat was in feite de droom waar ik als kind mee bezig was.

Because that was basically the dream I was working on as a child.

Ik wilde de aarde een keer vanuit de ruimte zien.

I wanted to see the Earth from space once.
