Buka, by I Wayan Sadra
Welcome to GoneCast, a podcast of all forms of gamelan, Indonesian music, and related
sounds from around the world.
I'm Jody Diamond.
Thank you for listening to GoneCast.
Iwayan Sadra has been recognized as one of Indonesia's most creative and experimental
composers.
Sadly, he passed away earlier this year.
Today, we will listen to two versions of one of his pieces.
The title of each is Buka, which means to open or introduction.
The first was recorded.
In the last couple of years, in the studio at EC Surakarta, the National Arts Institute
in Solo, the second version was recorded in the same place in 1989 when it was called
STSE Surakarta.
We want to thank Lyricord Records for giving us permission to include the second version
since it was included on New Music Indonesia.
This is Lyricord Records for giving us permission to include the second version since it was
included on New Music Indonesia.
First, Buka Samarangan, which Sadra said reminded him of the lively style of samaran,
and that will be followed by Buka written as Music to Accompany a Dance by Yefianova.
Sadra said it was meant to convey the feeling of sunrise.
And now, Buka Samarangan.
