Il y a un moment très technique du point de vue policier, qui ne sont pas des agents de l'immigration,

Et quand on traverse l'an, qu'on soit un marchand d'armes ou demandeur d'asile,

Très intéressé depuis toujours à des enjeux de droits humains, de migration, de deuil aussi, de deuil collectif, de mémoire collective.

Puis, ça fait douze ans maintenant que je suis dans ma pratique dite « artistique documentaire ».

Then, it has been twelve years now that I have been in my so-called "documentary artistic" practice.

Mais avant, j'ai travaillé pendant une douzaine d'années en développement international, complètement hors photographie.

But before, I worked for about twelve years in international development, completely unrelated to photography.

J'étais gestionnaire de projets, j'ai été analyste, j'étais sur le terrain en Amérique latine, en Palestine, en Afghanistan.

I was a project manager, I was an analyst, I was in the field in Latin America, Palestine, and Afghanistan.

Et puis, j'ai fait la recherche aussi à la maîtrise sur des enjeux du deuil après le génocide au Guatemala.

And then, I also did my master's research on the issues of mourning after the genocide in Guatemala.

Et donc, vraiment, quand je suis passé à la photographie, naturellement, c'est les mêmes intérêts qui m'ont motivé.

And so, really, when I turned to photography, naturally, it was the same interests that motivated me.

Et en fait, ça a toujours été le même continuum pour moi, comment continuer à m'impliquer, à m'engager, à comprendre, à analyser, à documenter, à communiquer tous ces enjeux complexes-là, mais d'une toute autre façon.

And in fact, it has always been the same continuum for me, how to continue to get involved, to commit, to understand, to analyze, to document, to communicate all these complex issues, but in a completely different way.

C'est-à-dire beaucoup plus seul, beaucoup plus en immersion sur le terrain, et d'essayer de faire des projets qui me touchent dans un contexte historique avec des gens qui vivent quelque chose d'important.

That is to say, much more alone, much more immersed in the field, and trying to do projects that resonate with me in a historical context with people who are experiencing something important.

Et ensuite, comment qu'on amène ça à une population, à un public beaucoup plus large.

And then, how do we bring that to a population, to a much larger audience?

L'intérêt, l'engagement pour les enjeux de migration, j'aime pas le mot.

Interest, commitment to migration issues, I don't like the word.

C'est ça. C'est assez large et bâti. Il y a plusieurs expériences à travers le temps.

That's it. It's quite broad and built. There are several experiences over time.

Il y en a quelques-unes qui sont importantes, qui ont mené directement à Roxham en 2015, un peu par hasard historique.

There are a few that are important, which led directly to Roxham in 2015, somewhat by historical accident.

J'étais en résidence en Autriche, et je suis arrivé le 1er septembre 2015, et quelques jours après, débutait le grand mouvement migratoire à travers l'Europe, avec la redécouverte du Petit-Hélène-Cordie sur les plages turques.

I was in residence in Austria, and I arrived on September 1, 2015, and a few days later, the great migratory movement across Europe began, with the rediscovery of Petit-Hélène-Cordie on the Turkish beaches.

vers l'Allemagne, et je me suis retrouvé un peu au centre de tout ça.

Et j'ai complètement changé mon plan de travail à l'époque.

And I completely changed my workspace at that time.

Je devais faire un truc hyper conceptuel sur les flots du Danube, qui était une réflexion sur l'idée de nation, sur l'idée d'identité, de territoire.

I had to do something very conceptual about the flows of the Danube, which was a reflection on the idea of nation, on the idea of identity, and of territory.

Et puis, je suis revenu en mode vraiment en premier degré.

And then, I came back in a really straightforward way.

J'ai été documenter l'histoire en mouvement, les différents points de contact, de friction de ce grand mouvement-là, dont j'étais tout à coup au centre.

I documented the history in motion, the different points of contact, the friction of this great movement, of which I suddenly found myself at the center.

Ça, c'est un moment important, parce que ce qui m'a vraiment frappé dans ce moment-là,

This is an important moment because what really struck me at that moment,

bien déjà, c'est tout le mouvement historique humain, tous les visages croisés,

well already, it's all of human historical movement, all the faces crossed,

mais surtout, ça se passait vraiment dans des points de frontières, souvent des anciens points de frontières,

but above all, it really took place at border points, often former border points,

des affectés, des autoroutes, des routes secondaires, par où les masses de gens passaient, dans des villages,

affected areas, highways, secondary roads, through which masses of people passed, in villages,

ou dans des gares de train, souvent, qui faisaient de points de jonction.

Et là, il y avait beaucoup, beaucoup de contacts entre les citoyens irréguliers et les migrants de passage.

And there, there were many, many contacts between irregular citizens and passing migrants.

Et ça, ça se manifestait par beaucoup de solidarité, par beaucoup de prise de conscience,

And this manifested itself through a lot of solidarity, through a lot of awareness,

par des gens qui invitaient les migrants à venir chez eux manger, à s'échanger, prendre une douche.

by people who invited migrants to come to their homes to eat, to exchange, to take a shower.

Et, pour en avoir parlé beaucoup avec les gens, ce contact-là direct a changé vraiment leur point de vue sur toute l'humanité derrière l'immigration, tous les enjeux.

And, having talked a lot with people about it, that direct contact really changed their perspective on all of humanity behind immigration, all the issues.

Après ce travail-là, aussi lié directement à Oxfam, j'ai travaillé sur un projet avec une collègue, Sarah Champagne.

After that work, also directly related to Oxfam, I worked on a project with a colleague, Sarah Champagne.

On avait une bourse correspondant à l'étranger.

We had a scholarship for studying abroad.

On avait documenté les liens que les diasporas maintiennent entre eux dans le monde, particulièrement via les envois d'argent.

We had documented the links that diasporas maintain with each other around the world, particularly through money transfers.

Les remittances, remesas en espagnol, qui est un phénomène économique hyper important, plus important que toute l'aide internationale publique officielle et qui va directement de famille en famille.

Remittances, remesas in Spanish, which is a highly important economic phenomenon, more important than any official public international aid, and which goes directly from family to family.

Pour le faire, on avait choisi de travailler avec, d'identifier des familles ici de différentes origines, vivre avec eux, les suivre dans leur vie pendant quelques mois.

To do this, we had chosen to work with, to identify families here of different origins, live with them, follow them in their lives for a few months.

Des gens qui sont migrés ici, migrants reçus depuis un an, deux ans, dix ans des fois, et qui maintiennent un rapport très, très intime avec leur famille dans leur lieu d'origine.

People who have migrated here, migrants who have been received for a year, two years, sometimes ten years, and who maintain a very, very close relationship with their family in their place of origin.

Soit qu'ils peuvent se sponsoriser pour un statut de réfugié, soit qu'ils envoient de l'argent pour l'école.

Either they can sponsor themselves for refugee status, or they send money for school.

C'était beaucoup plus complexe, en fait, que juste l'argent, mais l'argent, l'enjeu économique était devenu notre angle principal.

It was much more complex, in fact, than just the money, but the money, the economic stake had become our main angle.

Et donc, on a travaillé avec des familles qui étaient d'origine à Haïti, du Mexique et de la Syrie.

La famille qui recevait le support ou la famille à qui il était en lien intime.

C'est un super beau projet, très intime, très en profondeur.

On parle de lien économique, mais surtout juste de ça veut dire quoi.

Aujourd'hui, vivre cette double très-réalité-là, quand on est citoyen de plusieurs pays, qu'on maintient une conscience double, souvent, tous les jours,
