Alors là, je suis tout simplement chez moi, dans mon appartement.

Well, I'm simply at home, in my apartment.

Donc, il faut savoir que je vis dans le sud de la France, dans une ville qui s'appelle Cagnes-sur-Mer, qui est située pas très loin de Nice.

So, you should know that I live in the south of France, in a town called Cagnes-sur-Mer, which is located not far from Nice.

Et pourquoi j'ai choisi cet endroit ?

And why did I choose this place?

Pour le soleil, essentiellement, et puis évidemment, la mer.

J'avoue que ça aide pas mal, quand même.

Et j'avais choisi cette bibliothèque, en pensant à toi, évidemment, parce que pour moi, ça avait du sens, littérature, bibliothèque.

En introduction, j'ai dit que t'étais mi-italien, mi-australien, mi-côte d'Azuréen.

C'est pas forcément tout à fait vrai, du coup, est-ce que tu peux nous dire d'où est-ce que tu viens ?

That's not necessarily entirely true, so can you tell us where you come from?

Oui, alors effectivement, officiellement, déjà, je suis français, mais c'est vrai que je suis à moitié italien, parce que mon père est né en Italie.

Yes, so indeed, officially, I am French, but it is true that I am half Italian, because my father was born in Italy.

Il est arrivé en France quand il était tout jeune, sous l'impulsion de mon grand-père, parce que dans les années 50, suite à la Seconde Guerre mondiale, l'Italie était dans une situation assez compliquée.

He arrived in France when he was very young, under the influence of my grandfather, because in the 1950s, following World War II, Italy was in a rather complicated situation.

Et donc, c'est vrai que toute ma famille est venue s'installer dans le nord-est de la France.

Et c'est pour ça que j'ai du sang italien qui coule dans mes veines.

Ma maman, elle, est née en France et donc française aussi, donc je suis 50% française, 50% italien.

Et je pense que j'ai hérité, de manière, avec toute l'humilité qui s'impose, des meilleures caractéristiques de ces deux nationalités, n'est-ce pas ?

Voilà, donc je suis ça.

Après, comme tu le disais, je suis azuréen ou maralpin, pour les gens qui habitent dans les Alpes-Maritimes, donc je suis maralpin d'adoption depuis presque une dizaine d'années.

Et je suis australien.

Je suis australien peut-être de cœur, parce que c'est vrai que j'ai eu l'occasion d'y vivre un an, on aura peut-être l'occasion d'en rediscuter là aussi.

Tu nous as dit que tu étais dans le nord-est de la France, je crois que tu as fait tes études, c'est ça ?

You told us that you were in the northeast of France, I believe you studied there, right?

Oui, tout à fait. Alors moi, je suis né à Troyes, c'est une ville qui se trouve, on va dire, entre Paris et Nancy, ou entre Paris et Strasbourg, pour ceux qui ne sont pas très bons en géographie.

Yes, exactly. So I was born in Troyes, which is a city located, let's say, between Paris and Nancy, or between Paris and Strasbourg, for those who are not very good at geography.

Donc Troyes, c'est le temple de la mode, notamment, je conseille à tout le monde d'aller y faire un tour.

So Troyes is the temple of fashion, especially, I recommend everyone to go take a look.

Donc je suis né là-bas, et c'est vrai que dans le cadre de mes études, je suis justement parti à Strasbourg, à Nancy, ensuite à Lyon, où j'ai terminé mes études, donc ça a été un parcours assez atypique.

So I was born there, and it's true that as part of my studies, I went to Strasbourg, then to Nancy, and finally to Lyon, where I completed my studies, so it was quite an atypical journey.

Tu t'es pas mal baladé, tu étais déjà voyageur.

Et du coup, je crois avoir lu que tu avais fait des études en communication, c'est ça ? Ou publicité ?

So, I believe I read that you studied communication, is that right? Or advertising?

Oui, c'est ça. Alors à la base, j'avais un cursus plutôt artistique.

Yes, that's right. So originally, I had a rather artistic background.

C'est vrai que notamment, j'avais fait, je ne sais plus comment s'appelle cette fois.

It's true that in particular, I had done, I no longer remember what that time is called.

FAC à Strasbourg, le Palais des Arts, je crois, à Strasbourg.

Donc ça n'a pas bien marché, je ne pouvais pas trop les déboucher, donc c'est vrai que je me suis réorienté vers un cursus communication publicitaire, ce côté un peu artistique, ce qui m'a amené à Nancy.

So it didn't work out well, I couldn't really unblock them, so it is true that I redirected myself towards a course in advertising communication, this somewhat artistic side, which brought me to Nancy.

Et donc ensuite, j'ai déroulé pendant cinq ans jusqu'à avoir un Master 2 en communication des entreprises, qui m'a permis d'être un professionnel de la communication, du marketing et des nouvelles technologies, tout ce qui est digital, internet.

And so then, I continued for five years until I obtained a Master's degree in business communication, which allowed me to become a professional in communication, marketing, and new technologies, everything related to digital and the internet.

Ce qui a priori n'a rien à voir avec l'édition, et c'est ça qui est génial.

à la fin de tes études, si j'ai bien suivi, à la fin de tes études, tu décides de partir en Australie.

Parce que je ne sais pas, en lisant Australian Touch, j'ai cru comprendre que tu avais été un peu aidé à partir en Australie, qu'il y avait un ami grand et frêle, Julien, qui t'avait motivé à partir.

Because I don't know, while reading Australian Touch, I thought I understood that you had some help to go to Australia, that there was a tall and frail friend, Julien, who motivated you to leave.

Est-ce que ça s'est vraiment passé comme ça ?

Pourquoi t'es parti en Australie finalement ?

Mais effectivement, ça s'est passé comme dans le bouquin, c'est-à-dire que j'ai terminé mes études à Lyon.

But indeed, it happened as in the book, which is to say that I finished my studies in Lyon.

J'ai commencé à travailler.

I started working.

C'est vrai que quand on fait nos études, c'est pour réussir à grimper dans l'échelle sociale.

It's true that when we pursue our studies, it's to succeed in climbing the social ladder.

Et donc, c'est vrai que j'avais trouvé un métier dans une agence de communication très sympathique, avec des gens, eux aussi, très sympathiques.

Et c'est vrai qu'assez vite, au bout d'un an et demi ou deux, je me suis dit, hop, hop, hop, t'as peut-être oublié quelque chose en route.

Avant de te lancer à fond dans une carrière, t'as peut-être oublié de passer par la case.

Je pars me former à l'étranger.

I am going abroad for training.

On dit souvent que les voyages forment la jeunesse et c'est vrai.

Et donc, c'est vrai que sous l'impulsion d'un ami qui s'appelle Julien dans le bouquin, mais qui ne s'appelle pas Julien dans la vraie vie,

c'est vrai qu'on a décidé de partir, de se lancer dans cette aventure, de partir en Australie.

Même si au final, il n'est pas venu avec moi, mais c'est vrai qu'il a créé cette impulsion qui, moi, m'a permis de franchir le pas.

Parce qu'à l'époque, pour moi, c'était un premier grand voyage.

Je n'avais même pas pris l'avion de ma vie.

De me dire d'un seul coup, alors que j'étais déjà sorti de France par la route, mais de me dire je pars à l'autre bout du monde.

To suddenly tell me, when I had already left France by road, that I was going to the other side of the world.

C'était vraiment, pour moi, pas quelque chose d'inné.

It was really, for me, not something innate.

Donc, ça a été une vraie démarche.

So, it was a real process.

Ce qui m'a permis de me motiver à me dire je pars en Australie, c'est de me dire je vais pouvoir enfin réaliser le rêve que j'ai depuis longtemps, qui est d'écrire un livre.

What motivated me to say I'm going to Australia is thinking that I will finally be able to fulfill the dream I've had for a long time, which is to write a book.

Donc, je vais partir là-bas un an.

So, I am going to go there for a year.

Mais de ce voyage, je voulais aussi concrétiser un projet qui me tenait à cœur, qui était d'écrire un premier bouquin.

But from this trip, I also wanted to bring to life a project that was close to my heart, which was to write a first book.

Justement, tu dis que c'est important.

Exactly, you say it's important.

Tu dis que c'est un projet qui te tenait à cœur.

Ça commence quand cette passion ou cette envie d'écrire un livre ?

When did this passion or desire to write a book begin?

Ça commence assez loin.

It starts quite far away.

Je pense inconsciemment.

I think unconsciously.

Quand je suivais un baccalauréat littéraire, ça existe encore, je pense un bac L.

When I was pursuing a literary baccalaureate, it still exists, I think it's a bac L.

Déjà au lycée, j'avais une professeure de français.

Already in high school, I had a French teacher.

À chaque fois qu'elle me rendait mes copies, elle était toujours un peu embêtée parce que c'est vrai que j'étais un des cancres de la classe.

Every time she handed me back my papers, she was always a bit annoyed because it was true that I was one of the dunces in the class.

Je me mettais toujours au fond et je rigolais avec mes camarades.

I always sat at the back and laughed with my friends.

C'est vrai qu'elle me rendait souvent mes copies avec un « pfff ».

Vous m'énervez Léonard parce que vous avez vraiment un style d'écriture et je suis sûr que vous terminerez écrivain.

C'est elle qui m'a dit ça la première fois.

Moi, en tant que lycéen, ça me passait vraiment au-dessus de la tête.

As a high school student, it really went over my head.

Mais avec leur cul, je me dis qu'elle avait peut-être raison et cette idée a germé petit à petit.

But with their ass, I told myself that she might have been right, and this idea gradually took root.

J'ai commencé à écrire vraiment bien plus tard.

I started to write really well much later.

C'était à la fin de mes études, j'avais déjà 24-25 ans.

It was at the end of my studies, I was already 24-25 years old.

J'avais commencé un premier bouquin.

I had started a first book.

C'est intéressant d'en parler là parce qu'on y reviendra tout à l'heure.

Ce bouquin, j'avais écrit, je ne sais pas, une centaine de feuilles A4.

This book, I had written, I don't know, about a hundred A4 pages.

Quand on est étudiant, ça représente vraiment un gros travail.

When you are a student, it really represents a lot of work.

J'étais néophyte en matière de nouvelles technologies et un jour, mon ordinateur tombe en panne.

I was a novice when it came to new technologies, and one day, my computer broke down.

Je l'amène chez un informaticien et je lui dis qu'il faut absolument récupérer mon ordi

I am taking it to a computer technician and I tell him that we absolutely need to recover my computer.

parce qu'au-delà de toutes mes photos évidemment que je voulais conserver,

because beyond all my photos that I obviously wanted to keep,

il y avait cet écrit sur lequel je travaillais depuis un an.

There was this writing that I had been working on for a year.

Et là, elle me dit écoutez,

And then she says to me, listen,

votre ordinateur est sérieusement endommagé

your computer is seriously damaged

et si on veut récupérer vos fichiers,

and if we want to retrieve your files,

je parle de ça, on était en 2005.

En 2021, ça se passerait peut-être autrement.

Mais en gros, elle me dit c'est 1500 euros.

But basically, she tells me it's 1500 euros.

Et là, franchement, le sol s'est dérobé sur mes pieds.

And there, frankly, the ground slipped away from under my feet.

J'ai vraiment cru, j'étais inspiré par les abysses.

I really believed, I was inspired by the abysses.

Et voilà, j'ai vu mon écrit s'envoler en même temps qu'il a reformaté mon ordinateur pour 50 euros.

And there you have it, I saw my writing fly away at the same time he reformatted my computer for 50 euros.

À choisir entre 1500 euros et 50 euros quand on est étudiant,

donc l'envie d'écrire, elle est vraiment venue là.

So the desire to write really came from there.

Mais suite à ce traumatisme, quand j'ai perdu le bouquin,

je me suis dit je laisse tomber.

I told myself I would let it go.

C'est un signe du destin.

L'écriture, ce n'est pas fait pour moi.

Writing is not made for me.

Et finalement, c'est revenu quand même.

Je pense que c'est quelque part en nous.

J'ai lu une autre anecdote, tu me dis si elle est vraie ou si elle n'est pas vraie,

concernant tes mains et une ancienne petite amie.

Comme quoi tu avais des mains d'écrivain.

On était tout jeunes, on était ados.

We were very young, we were teenagers.

Ma première histoire d'amour.

Et c'est vrai qu'elle regardait souvent mes mains en disant,

c'est vrai que je n'ai pas des grosses paluches de mécano,

À partir du moment où je suis parti, pour moi, il fallait écrire.

Donc, j'ai voyagé quelques semaines.

Mais très vite, à partir du moment où j'ai réussi à m'installer à Sydney,

j'ai commencé à écrire.

À l'époque, j'ai trouvé un travail dans un café à mi-temps.

Et en parallèle, j'écrivais.

Donc, je me suis instauré vraiment une discipline

où chaque jour, finalement, je parvenais à écrire et à avancer sur mon roman.

Là où c'est intéressant, effectivement, c'est que l'Australie t'inspire forcément.

Tu es sur place, tu découvres plein de choses.

Et finalement, tout ce que j'étais en train de découvrir sur le moment,
