Donc j'ai 32 ans, je suis chirurgien dentiste. Donc j'exerce depuis à peu près 7 ans maintenant.

Donc oui, ça s'est fait un petit peu au hasard en sortant du lycée où les profs te demandent

Donc c'est ça qui m'a convaincue et le fait aussi qu'assez rapidement pendant les études,

D'accord. Ok. Et alors, comment ça s'est passé ? Donc tu as passé le bac.

Tu t'es… Ça se passe sur quoi ? C'est sur concours ? C'est quel format ce cursus ?

Oui. Donc c'est la première année de médecine en fait qui est commune au concours de médecine dentaire,

Yes. So it's actually the first year of medical studies that is common to the dental medicine entrance exam,

sages-femmes et pharmacie. Et en fait, donc on a un tronc commun avec toutes les filières.

Et ensuite, au deuxième trimestre, ils nous demandaient de choisir vers quelle filière on souhaitait s'orienter

Non, j'étais restée sur dentaire parce que… Alors l'école, ça n'a jamais été trop… J'étais bonne élève, mais ce n'était pas ce qui me passionnait le plus.

Donc médecine, je trouvais que c'était beaucoup trop long pour moi. Et dentaire, finalement, c'était six ans d'études.

Donc ça reste long, mais justement, comme il y avait ce côté pratique assez rapidement, c'est ça qui m'a motivée aussi.

Oui. Et alors, comment ça s'est passé cette année de concours ? Ce que j'imagine que c'est quand même assez intense.

C'était… Tu as réussi… Visiblement, tu as réussi, mais comment ça s'est passé ?

It was… You succeeded… Apparently, you succeeded, but how did it go?

Alors moi, je l'ai loupé la première année. Je l'ai eu en deux ans.

So for me, I missed it the first year. I got it in two years.

Alors il me semble que maintenant, ça a pas mal changé. Je crois qu'actuellement, on ne peut plus redoubler la première année de médecine.

So it seems to me that now, things have changed quite a bit. I believe that currently, you can no longer repeat the first year of medical studies.

En tout cas, moi, à l'époque, je l'ai eu en deux ans. Et oui, c'est deux années du coup assez compliquées quand même, assez intenses au niveau du travail.

In any case, for me, at the time, I got it in two years. And yes, those two years were quite complicated, quite intense in terms of work.

C'est beaucoup d'apprentissage.

It's a lot of learning.

C'est beaucoup d'apprentissage par cœur et on met un peu de côté, enfin un peu beaucoup même, sa vie personnelle.

It's a lot of memorization and one puts aside, well quite a bit actually, their personal life.

Donc c'est quand même une grosse année de sacrifice pour réussir.

OK. Oui. Mais au final, voilà, donc tu l'as validée. Donc quand tu ne l'as pas eu la première année, qu'est-ce que tu t'es dit ?

Tu t'es dit dans tous les cas, je retente une deuxième fois et puis on verra. Tu étais assez sûre de ton coup pour la deuxième année ou ?

On n'est jamais sûre parce que c'est pour le principe du concours où c'est compliqué d'être sûre.

C'est pour le principe de soi, mais oui, j'avais envie de le retenter dans tous les cas. J'étais motivée pour en tout cas.

OK. Donc tu l'as validée et donc ensuite, ça t'a permis de rentrer dans le cursus concret. Est-ce que tu peux nous en dire un petit peu plus comment ça se passe ces six années d'école d'apprentissage ?

OK. So you validated it, and then that allowed you to enter the concrete curriculum. Can you tell us a little more about how these six years of apprenticeship school work?

Justement un peu le rythme, les matières ?

Donc il y a beaucoup de... Les premières années, c'est donc un petit peu les...

C'est un peu la dentisterie, je vais dire. Donc c'est l'anatomie de la dent, les premiers soins que l'on va apprendre. Ça reste... C'est beaucoup... Il y a quand même beaucoup d'apprentissage aussi parce que mine de rien, c'est complètement nouveau.

It's a bit like dentistry, I would say. So it's the anatomy of the tooth, the first aid that we are going to learn. It remains... There's still... There is a lot of learning too because, let's face it, it's completely new.

Et donc un peu de mélange aussi de cours de médecine parce qu'il y a quand même... C'est quand même en rapport avec des...

Des soins.

Care.

C'est quand même... Ça reste le corps humain. Donc il faut quand même un minimum de connaissances anatomiques et...

It's still... It's the human body, after all. So you still need a minimum of anatomical knowledge and...

Et scientifiques. Mais par contre, dès la première année, on a déjà des travaux pratiques. Donc on s'entraînait sur... En fait, on avait des fausses bouches en plastique et les instruments de dentiste sur lesquels on s'entraînait déjà dès la première année.

And scientists. But on the other hand, from the very first year, we already had practical work. So we were practicing on... In fact, we had fake plastic mouths and dental instruments that we were already training on from the first year.

Ok. Et ça, c'est compliqué.

Okay. And that is complicated.

Ouais, c'est toutes les semaines, ça, que tu as des travaux un peu pratiques ?

Yeah, is it every week that you have practical assignments?

Oui, on avait même plusieurs... On avait... Je pense que la première année, oui, on devait avoir, je dirais bien, peut-être quatre ou six heures de TPT.

Yes, we even had several... We had... I think that in the first year, yes, we must have had, I would say, maybe four or six hours of TPT.

CPT par semaine, ouais.

CPT per week, yeah.

Ouais, ok.

Yeah, okay.

Donc tu as plusieurs disciplines.

So you have several disciplines.

Ouais, ok. Ok. Et donc, est-ce que tu avais déjà un stage en première année ou c'est que vers la fin que ça se...

Yeah, okay. So, did you have an internship in your first year or is it only towards the end that it...

Le premier stage, c'était uniquement de l'observation. On a dû aller observer, je crois que c'était une semaine, dans un cabinet dentaire de ville pour voir un petit peu comment ça se passait au niveau du travail et le côté aussi profession libéral.

The first internship was solely observation. We had to observe, I believe it was for a week, in a city dental office to see a bit how things were done in terms of work and also the liberal profession aspect.

Ouais.

Yeah.

Mais c'était que les travaux.

But it was just the work.

Les travaux pratiques et après le stage d'observation.

The practical work and after the observation internship.

Ouais. Ok. Et est-ce que chaque année, parce que c'est quand même un long cursus, est-ce qu'il y a un moment où tu te spécialises un petit peu ou c'est vraiment très progressif pour aller de plus en plus haut, j'allais dire, dans le niveau de tes connaissances ?

Yeah. Okay. And is there a point each year, because it's quite a long program, where you specialize a little bit, or is it really very gradual as you go higher and higher, I would say, in the level of your knowledge?

C'est assez progressif, en effet, où tous les ans, on te rajoute des matières un petit peu plus spécifiques dans les fondamentaux.

It's quite gradual, indeed, where every year, they're adding somewhat more specific subjects within the fundamentals.

Ouais.

Yeah.

Par contre, si on veut se spécialiser, par exemple, sur de l'orthodontie, qui est une spécialité dentaire, c'est à la fin des sixièmes années où il y a un autre concours à repasser.

On the other hand, if we want to specialize, for example, in orthodontics, which is a dental specialty, it is at the end of the sixth year that there is another exam to retake.

Et là, il y a trois choix possibles, mais c'est encore des années supplémentaires d'études.

Ok. Ouais. D'accord. Et donc, toi, du coup, tu as été jusqu'à... Parce qu'est-ce qu'il y a une différence entre quelqu'un qui est dentiste et chirurgien dentiste ?

Okay. Yeah. Alright. So, you, as a result, you went up to... Because is there a difference between someone who is a dentist and a dental surgeon?

On est tous chirurgiens dentistes en étant diplômés.

Mais par contre, maintenant, il y a trois...

Il y a trois spécialités. Donc, il y a chirurgien oral, ce qui va être l'équivalent un peu de la stomatologie en médecine, pour simplifier.

Ensuite, l'orthodontie. Et puis, après, c'est médecine buccodentaire. Donc, ça va être vraiment des choses un peu plus spécifiques.

Ils vont, par exemple, poser des implants ou faire des choses un petit peu plus... Enfin, ils vont se spécialiser en général dans une discipline plus poussée.

Ouais. Ok.

Yeah. Okay.

Et du coup, soit on...

Alors, ce que tu disais, c'est que tu as eu un stage d'observation et après, plus un stage pratique. C'était... C'était quel curé de ce stage ?

So, what you were saying is that you had a observation internship and then a practical internship. What was... What was the priest in that internship?

Alors, en fait, dès la... À partir de la quatrième année, on a des stages cliniques. Donc, en fait, tous les matins, par exemple, on était... En fait, il y avait un centre de soins au sein de notre faculté, comme ça fait partie du centre hospitalier. Moi, c'était à Lille.

So, actually, from the... Starting from the fourth year, we had clinical internships. So, in fact, every morning, for example, we were... In fact, there was a care center within our faculty, as it is part of the hospital center. Mine was in Lille.

Ouais.

Yeah.

Donc, tous les matins, en quatrième année, en fait, on recevait des patients qui venaient se faire soigner.

So, every morning, in fourth grade, we actually received patients who came for treatment.

On venait à l'hôpital et l'après-midi, on avait nos pours et nos TP comme les années précédentes.

We would come to the hospital and in the afternoon, we had our practicals and our lab sessions like in previous years.

Et donc, dans ce cas, quand tu fais du soin comme ça, tu étais forcément accompagnée ou à côté d'un dentiste, j'allais dire, déjà diplômé, ouais ?

And so, in that case, when you provide care like that, you must have been accompanied or next to a dentist, I would say, already certified, right?

Oui, oui. Il y avait toujours les professeurs qui étaient autour de nous. Donc, en fait, à l'hôpital, ça se passait d'une certaine façon où on était dans des secteurs particuliers.

Yes, yes. There were always the teachers who were around us. So, in fact, at the hospital, it happened in a certain way where we were in specific areas.

Donc, il y avait une salle qui était destinée à la chirurgie, une autre salle qui était destinée aux soins de caries classiques, une autre salle qui était destinée à la prothèse.

So, there was a room that was intended for surgery, another room that was intended for conventional cavity treatments, and another room that was intended for prosthetics.

Et en fait, chaque prof de faculté a un peu sa spécialité aussi. Donc, on était toujours encadré par des professeurs qui étaient, bien sûr, là pour nous surveiller quand même parce que les premiers patients, c'est jamais évident.

And indeed, each faculty professor has a bit of their own specialty as well. So, we were always supervised by professors who were, of course, there to keep an eye on us because working with the first patients is never easy.

Ouais. Et du coup, c'est ce premier vrai stage.

Yeah. So, this is my first real internship.

Le stage de mise en pratique, comment tu l'as vécu ? Ça t'a conforté dans ce que tu avais imaginé ?

How did you experience the practical internship? Did it confirm what you had imagined?

Oui, oui, oui.

Yes, yes, yes.

Est-ce que tu as eu un peu une bonne ou une mauvaise ?

Did you have a bit of a good or a bad one?

C'est toujours un petit peu stressant parce que de se dire qu'on passe de dents en plastique à des vrais dents, des vrais patients, c'est vrai qu'il faut quand même penser aux patients dans sa globalité.

It's always a little bit stressful because going from plastic teeth to real teeth, real patients, it is true that you still have to think about the patients as a whole.

On n'est plus que face à des fausses dents. Donc, il faut, c'est vrai qu'on met vraiment en pratique tout ce qu'on a appris. On va réfléchir aux différents plans de traitement.

We are only faced with false teeth now. So, it's true that we really need to apply everything we've learned. We will think about the different treatment plans.

Enfin, il y a vraiment une grosse réflexion autour et avec le patient.

Finally, there is really a lot of reflection around and with the patient.

Et c'est vrai que ça permet aussi de prendre confiance en nous pour soigner les gens.

And it is true that it also helps to build our confidence in healing people.

Et puis, c'est vrai que la mise en pratique est quand même très sympa. On se dit, ça y est, j'y suis.

And then, it's true that putting it into practice is still very nice. You think to yourself, here I am, I've made it.

Ouais, ça se concrétise.

Yeah, it's becoming a reality.

Ouais. Et qu'est-ce que t'aimes particulièrement, toi, du coup, dans ton métier quotidiennement ? C'est quoi qui te motive ?

Yeah. So what do you particularly like about your job on a daily basis? What motivates you?

Déjà, c'est assez varié.

Already, it's quite varied.

Quand je me suis dirigée vers dentaire à la base, j'avais connu, moi, par exemple, l'orthodontie en étant jeune.

When I initially oriented myself towards dentistry, I had experienced, for example, orthodontics in my youth.

Donc, je connaissais un petit peu cette voie-là.

So, I knew a little bit about that path.

Mais à part mon contrôle annuel quand j'étais jeune, je ne connaissais pas grand-chose de la dentisterie, finalement.

But apart from my annual check-up when I was young, I didn't know much about dentistry, after all.

Et en fait, je me suis perçue au fil des années et des études que c'était très varié.

And I actually realized over the years and through my studies that it was very varied.

Il y avait vraiment plein de disciplines dans le domaine du dentaire.

There were really many disciplines in the field of dentistry.

Et en fait, je dirais que chaque journée est différente.

And in fact, I would say that each day is different.

Chaque patient est différent.

Every patient is different.

Chaque plan de traitement est différent.

Every treatment plan is different.

Donc, il y a vraiment de nombreuses possibilités de soins possibles.

Et finalement, c'est vraiment très varié.

OK. Et toi, aujourd'hui, du coup, tu travailles dans un cabinet dentaire de ville, comme tu disais, ou plutôt en hôpital ?

Moi, je suis ce qu'on appelle collaboratrice dans un cabinet de ville.

I am what you call a collaborator in a city office.

Donc, nous sommes deux dentistes dans le cabinet.

So, we are two dentists in the office.

Donc, toi, on dit une patientelle aussi pour le dentiste ?

So, do we say a female patient for the dentist as well?

Oui, c'est ça, oui.

Yes, that's it, yes.

OK. Donc, tu as ta propre patientelle qui vient te consulter pour…

OK. So, you have your own patients who come to see you for...

Et c'est du coup une journée…

And it's therefore a day…

Donc là, par exemple, aujourd'hui, on est jeudi, c'est toujours off.

Mais donc, tu as une semaine un peu type…

But then, you have a somewhat typical week...

Enfin, tu travailles comment ? Cinq jours semaine ?

So, how do you work? Five days a week?

Moi, du coup, je travaille le lundi, le mardi, le mercredi et le vendredi.

So, I work on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday.

En général, les journées, moi, je fais 8h, 18h30.

Generally, my days are from 8 AM to 6:30 PM.

Oui.

Yes.

Et ça fait des bonnes journées, oui.

And it makes for good days, yes.

Et donc, après, la journée, comme je te disais tout à l'heure, c'est assez varié.

And so, after that, the day, as I was telling you earlier, is quite varied.

Ça va être vraiment dépendant de ce qu'il y a au programme du jour.

It's really going to depend on what is on the agenda for the day.

Parfois, ça va m'arriver de prendre des très longues plages horaires sur un même patient

Sometimes, I will end up taking very long time slots for the same patient.

pour pouvoir, quand c'est un gros plan de traitement, avancer le plus possible.

in order to, when it's a major treatment plan, progress as much as possible.

Donc, des fois, je peux garder quelqu'un, par exemple, deux heures sur le fauteuil pour bien avancer

So, sometimes I can keep someone, for example, two hours on the chair to make good progress.

ou des fois, c'est des petits créneaux de 30 minutes.

Or sometimes, it's small time slots of 30 minutes.

Et du coup, tu as tout type de toutage, tout type de traitement ?

vous avez exactement les mêmes spécificités ?

Vous complétez ou c'est juste, voilà, vous êtes à deux dans ce cabinet-là,

mais vous êtes sur les mêmes patients, les mêmes profils ?

Oui, on a chacun nos patients, mais en effet, on est tous deux.

Donc, ce qu'on appelle omnipraticien, où on fait de tout.

So, what we call a general practitioner, where we do everything.

Mais oui, on est tous les deux à faire, on va dire, de la dentisterie classique.

On fait un petit peu de tout.
