I am a mother of three children, I have two daughters and a little boy who is 9 years old, 7 years old, and 1 year old.

Je viens d'Orient, comme je l'ai mentionné, je suis mariée à un Brésilien.

I come from the East, as I mentioned, I am married to a Brazilian.

Nous avons été ensemble pendant 17 ans et je suis arrivée au Royaume-Uni quand j'avais 22 ans.

We were together for 17 years, and I arrived in the UK when I was 22 years old.

Et aujourd'hui, je suis un propriétaire d'entreprise de succès.

And why did you also decide to come to the United Kingdom?

Oui, je veux dire, la histoire est vraiment intéressante.

Yes, I mean, the story is really interesting.

Je n'ai jamais pensé à aller à l'étranger.

I have never thought about going abroad.

Ça n'était jamais dans mon cœur.

It was never in my heart.

J'ai suivi mon ancien copain parce qu'il est arrivé ici.

I followed my ex-boyfriend because he arrived here.

Il a suivi sa sœur.

He followed his sister.

Le Royaume-Uni et la Pologne n'étaient pas même dans l'Union Européenne.

The United Kingdom and Poland were not even in the European Union.

Donc, en venant ici, j'ai besoin d'une invitation.

So, by coming here, I need an invitation.

Donc, ce n'était pas aussi facile que ce qu'il est aujourd'hui.

So, it wasn't as easy as it is today.

Juste pour acheter un volet et tomber sur l'avion.

Just to buy a shutter and stumble upon the plane.

Donc, j'ai suivi mon ancien copain, en fait.

So, I followed my ex-boyfriend, actually.

Et c'était mon premier goût du Royaume-Uni.

And that was my first taste of the United Kingdom.

Mais j'étais toujours une étudiante en Pologne.

But I was still a student in Poland.

J'étais venu ici juste pour des vacances et travailler dans des hôtels, des magasins de café, des restaurants.

I had come here just for a vacation and to work in hotels, coffee shops, and restaurants.

J'étais en train de nettoyer des bâtiments et de faire un diplôme master en Pologne.

I was cleaning buildings and earning a master's degree in Poland.

Donc, je faisais vraiment tout ce que je pouvais pour gagner un certain nombre d'argent pour m'aider à étudier en Pologne.

So, I was really doing everything I could to earn a certain amount of money to help me study in Poland.

Quand j'ai terminé l'université finissante, j'ai voulu venir.

When I finished university, I wanted to come.

Et évidemment, j'ai voulu travailler dans la profession que j'étais qualifiée pour faire.

And of course, I wanted to work in the profession I was qualified for.

Donc, j'ai appliqué à certains emplois.

So, I have applied to some jobs.

J'ai travaillé à l'Université du Royaume-Uni et je n'ai pas eu de succès avec ça.

I worked at a university in the UK and I was not successful with that.

Et à ce moment-là, ma relation avec mon copain s'est terminée.

And at that moment, my relationship with my boyfriend ended.

Et j'ai pensé, OK, c'est l'heure pour moi de retourner en Pologne, vraiment.

And I thought, OK, it's time for me to go back to Poland, really.

Parce que je n'ai pas envie de travailler dans des magasins de café ou des restaurants pour le reste de ma vie.

Because I don't want to work in coffee shops or restaurants for the rest of my life.

Et il me semble que c'était la seule option pour moi à l'époque.

And it seems to me that it was the only option for me at the time.

Donc, j'ai appliqué à quelques emplois dans des écoles et j'ai quitté.

So, I applied to a few jobs in schools and I left.

Et je suis retournée en Pologne.

And I went back to Poland.

Et croyez-le ou non, mais j'ai reçu un emploi.

And believe it or not, but I got a job.

J'ai reçu un emploi dans l'Université du Royaume-Uni, dans mon emploi rêvé.

I got a job at a university in the UK, in my dream job.

Et ça m'a fait retourner dans l'Université du Royaume-Uni et j'ai commencé ma vie là-dedans.

And it made me go back to the University in the UK and I started my life there.

C'était la raison pour laquelle j'ai retourné.

That was the reason why I turned back.

D'accord. Donc, vous êtes retournée dans l'Université du Royaume-Uni après être retournée en Pologne.

Okay. So, you returned to the University in the UK after going back to Poland.

Oui, absolument.

Yes, absolutely.

Donc, je suis retournée en Pologne et j'ai pensé qu'il n'y avait rien pour moi à faire ici dans l'Université du Royaume-Uni.

So, I went back to Poland and I thought there was nothing for me to do here at the University in the UK.

Premièrement, je ne parle pas le langage.

First of all, I do not speak the language.

Deuxièmement, il n'y a pas de chance pour moi de faire le travail.

Secondly, there is no chance for me to do the work.

Donc, je suis retournée et j'ai reçu un emploi et ça m'a fait retourner dans l'Université du Royaume-Uni.

So, I went back and got a job, which brought me back to the University in the UK.

Qu'est-ce que c'était cet emploi ?

What was that job?

J'ai appliqué pour être assistante en soins de santé.

I applied to be a healthcare assistant.

En Angleterre, il y a différents types de soins de santé.

In England, there are different types of healthcare.

Il y a les soins de santé complets, où les enfants viennent et sont suivis ou éduqués du matin jusqu'à la nuit.

There are comprehensive healthcare services, where children come and are monitored or educated from morning until night.

Et c'est exactement ce que j'ai fait.

And that's exactly what I did.

J'ai commencé à travailler très tôt, à 7h du matin et à 6h du soir.

I started working very early, at 7 in the morning and at 6 in the evening.

J'ai regardé les enfants.

I watched the children.

J'ai aussi appris l'anglais.

I also learned English.

Je me souviens des moments où le enfant venait vers moi avec un livre et une histoire.

I remember the moments when the child would come to me with a book and a story.

Et je ne savais pas comment prononcer la plupart des choses dans le livre.

And I didn't know how to pronounce most of the things in the book.

Et j'étais juste en train de prétendre.

And I was just pretending.

Et j'étais tellement heureuse que j'ai reçu cet emploi.

And I was so happy that I got this job.

Et j'ai été acceptée.

And I have been accepted.

Et j'ai senti comme si j'étais sur le top du monde, en fait.

And I felt like I was on top of the world, actually.

En faisant ça.

By doing that.

C'était mon emploi de rêve.

It was my dream job.

J'ai juste gradué de l'université et j'ai reçu cet emploi.

I just graduated from university and I got this job.

Donc c'était tout pour moi.

So that was it for me.

Et tu dis que tu as suivi ton ex-femme quand tu es venue pour la première fois aux Etats-Unis.

And you say that you followed your ex-wife when you came to the United States for the first time.

Et c'était aussi ton rêve d'aller à Londres, d'aller aux Etats-Unis ou pas vraiment ?

And was it also your dream to go to London, to go to the United States, or not really?

Non, pas vraiment.

No, not really.

Pas du tout.

Not at all.

Je n'ai jamais pensé à voyager.

I have never thought about traveling.

Seulement maintenant, j'ai développé un rêve, un désir de voyager dans le monde.

Only now have I developed a dream, a desire to travel the world.

Et c'est ce que je fais avec ma famille.

And that's what I do with my family.

Mais à l'époque, je n'avais pas vraiment pensé à voyager dans mon pays.

But at the time, I hadn't really thought about traveling in my country.

Pas du tout.

Not at all.

J'ai vu mes amis avoir un très bon travail, commencer des affaires en Pologne.

I saw my friends having a very good job, starting businesses in Poland.

Et c'est ce que je pensais faire.

And that's what I was thinking of doing.

Mais évidemment, mon cœur m'a conduite.

But of course, my heart led me.

Et c'est comme ça que la histoire a commencé.

And that's how the story began.

Et puis j'ai rencontré mon mari.

And then I met my husband.

Et à cause de ça, je suis là.

And because of that, I am here.

Mais je peux ressentir que c'était difficile aussi pour toi, à cause de l'anglais et de

But I can feel that it was difficult for you too, because of the English and of

la barrière entre l'anglais et la langue.

the barrier between English and the language.

Oui, c'était très difficile.

Yes, it was very difficult.

Il y a des moments où c'était humiliant.

There are moments when it was humiliating.

J'avais des enseignants ou des gens qui travaillent avec moi dans le team, qui me corrigeaient,

I had teachers or people who worked with me in the team, who corrected me.

qui regardaient vers moi.

who were looking at me.

Parce que j'essayais mon mieux.

Because I was trying my best.

Mais il y a eu des moments où j'ai dû éviter la situation.

But there were times when I had to avoid the situation.

J'ai dû trouver mon chemin.

I had to find my way.

J'ai dû être clé, en fait.

I must have been key, in fact.

Parce que quand ils m'ont envoyé un livre et que je savais que je ne pouvais pas prononcer

Because when they sent me a book and I knew I couldn't pronounce it.

certains des mots, j'étais vraiment en colère que je ne pouvais pas faire ça.

Some of the words, I was really angry that I couldn't do that.

Parce que j'étais en train d'éducation.

Because I was in the middle of education.

Les enfants apprennent l'anglais de moi.

The children learn English from me.

Et ici, je suis, tu sais, rarement, à peu près en anglais, employée dans un milieu d'éducation.

And here I am, you know, rarely, somewhat in English, employed in an educational environment.

Oui.

Yes.

Donc, tu vas être arrêtée après, à ce travail.

So, you are going to be arrested afterward, at this job.

Tu m'as dit ça auparavant.

You told me that before.

Oui.

Yes.

Donc, en fait, ce qui s'est passé, même si j'étais en train de faire mon mieux et que j'étais

the impression that, unfortunately, because of my accent and because of my language,

je ne pourrais pas continuer ici.

I cannot continue here.

Et on ne peut pas vraiment voir que je serai réussie dans ce domaine.

And one can't really see that I will succeed in this field.

Donc, j'ai été envoyée.

So, I have been sent.

Et je me souviens, à ce moment-là, je n'étais même pas en train de conduire.

And I remember, at that moment, I wasn't even driving.

J'ai pris le bus de retour.

I took the bus back.

Et j'étais tellement désolée de parler avec mes collègues de ce qui s'est passé.

And I was so sorry to talk with my colleagues about what happened.

Tu sais, je ne voulais pas dire à personne ce qui s'est réellement passé.

You know, I didn't want to tell anyone what really happened.

Tu sais, j'essayais de cacher la histoire.

You know, I was trying to hide the story.

Et jusqu'à ce moment-là, je pense, peut-être...

And until that moment, I think, maybe...

Oui.

Yes.

Il y a deux ans, j'ai commencé à parler de ça ouvertement.

Two years ago, I started talking about it openly.

Parce que ça m'a pris tant de temps de processer ça.

Because it took me so long to process that.

Parce qu'il y avait beaucoup de malheur autour de ça.

Because there was a lot of misery surrounding it.

Oui.

Yes.

Tu ne te sentais pas suffisante.

You did not feel adequate.

Absolument.

Absolutely.

J'étais comme, quelles sont mes options maintenant ?

I was like, what are my options now?

Tu sais, je suis retournée au Royaume-Uni.

You know, I went back to the United Kingdom.

J'ai lancé ce travail.

I started this work.

Et je me suis dit que ce n'était pas pour moi.

And I told myself that it wasn't for me.

Que je ne réussirais jamais dans ce domaine.

That I would never succeed in this field.

Et que c'est mieux que je fasse quelque chose d'autre.

And that it's better for me to do something else.

Et évidemment, je n'ai pas voulu ressembler à une erreur pour mes parents.

And of course, I didn't want to look like a mistake to my parents.

Et retourner en Pologne après seulement un mois.

And return to Poland after only a month.

Et dire que ça n'a pas fonctionné.

And to think that it didn't work.

Je n'ai pas voulu arrêter.

I didn't want to stop.

Tu sais.

You know.

Oui.

Yes.

Donc, tu t'es restée environ un mois dans ce travail.

So, you stayed in that job for about a month.

Et OK.

And OK.

Oui.

Yes.

Je suis restée seulement un mois.

I stayed for only a month.

Et évidemment, tu as une période de probation.

And obviously, you have a probationary period.

Donc, je pense que c'était trois mois.

So, I think it was three months.

Mais après un mois, je me suis déjà dit que...

But after a month, I already told myself that...

que ça n'allait pas fonctionner pour moi.

that it wasn't going to work for me.

C'est...

It is...

Tu sais, j'ai vraiment ce sentiment.

You know, I really have that feeling.

Parce que j'ai travaillé dans l'industrie de la luxe à Paris.

Because I worked in the luxury industry in Paris.

En français, évidemment.

In French, obviously.

Et j'ai aussi été arrêtée.

And I was also arrested.

Seulement un mois après que j'ai commencé le travail.

Only a month after I started the job.

Et c'était...

And it was...

C'était très traumatisant, en fait.

It was rất traumatizing, in fact.

Parce que c'est...

Because it is...

Quand tu essaies de faire de ton mieux.

When you try to do your best.

Et quand tu veux être engagée et dévotée dans ton nouveau travail.

And when you want to be committed and devoted to your new job.

Et quand tu aimes vraiment ce que tu fais.

And when you really love what you do.

C'est si difficile de...

It's so hard to...

De entendre quelqu'un te dire que tu n'es pas...

To hear someone tell you that you are not...

Tu n'es pas assez bonne.

You are not good enough.

Ça ne fonctionne pas pour toi.

It doesn't work for you.

Tu n'auras pas de succès.

You will not be successful.

C'est si difficile.

It's so difficult.

Et c'est aussi...

And it's also...

Ça peut être aussi très toxique.

It can also be very toxic.

Donc, je peux imaginer comment ça impacte ta confiance à ce moment-là.

So, I can imagine how that impacts your confidence at that moment.

Oui.

Yes.

J'ai été frappée.

I was struck.

J'ai été frappée sur mes pieds.

I was struck on my feet.

Je dirais.

I would say.

Je ne savais pas qui j'étais.

I didn't know who I was.

Parce que, évidemment, mon identité à ce moment-là était aussi entamée dans mon diplôme.

Because, obviously, my identity at that moment was also compromised in my degree.

Dans les choses que je faisais.

In the things I used to do.

Et, tu sais, jusqu'à ce jour-là, je n'ai jamais été dit non.

And, you know, up until that day, I had never been told no.

Jusqu'à ce jour-là, j'ai été assez successeuse dans tout ce que j'ai décidé de faire.

Until that day, I had been quite successful in everything I decided to do.

Donc, c'était la première fois que quelqu'un m'a dit non.

So, it was the first time someone told me no.

Ce n'est pas pour toi.

It's not for you.

Et je me souviens, j'étais entamée.

And I remember, I was started.

Quand je suis retournée chez moi et que j'étais rentrée dans un quartier.

When I returned home and entered a neighborhood.

J'étais partagant un quartier à ce moment-là.

I was sharing an apartment at that time.

Oui.

Yes.

Ma vie était en morceaux.

My life was in pieces.

Je ne savais pas quoi faire avec moi-même.

I didn't know what to do with myself.

Et, évidemment, c'était tout ce que j'avais jamais voulu faire.

And, of course, it was all I had ever wanted to do.

Donc, je n'avais pas un plan B.

So, I didn't have a plan B.

C'était le seul plan que j'avais à ce moment-là.

It was the only plan I had at that moment.

Donc, qu'avez-vous décidé de faire après ça ?

So, what did you decide to do after that?

Donc, après ça.

So, after that.

Donc, après ça, j'ai encore décidé de rester parce qu'il y avait deux parties en moi.

So, after that, I decided to stay again because there were two parts in me.

Donc, l'une qui était vraiment déchirée et vraiment déchirée.

So, one that was really torn and really ripped.

Et l'autre qui était toujours à l'espoir.

And the other who was always hopeful.

Et il y avait un peu de foi et de l'espoir que quelque chose pouvait sortir de ça.

And there was a bit of faith and hope that something could come out of it.

Tu sais, je suis déjà là.

You know, I'm already here.

Je pourrais bien apprendre l'anglais et j'essaye de nouveau.

I could indeed learn English and I am trying again.

Tu sais, j'ai cet esprit en moi qui n'abandonne jamais.

You know, I have this spirit within me that never gives up.

Tu sais.

You know.

Donc, j'ai choisi moi-même.

So, I chose myself.

Et j'ai trouvé un travail pour moi.

And I found a job for me.

Tu sais.

You know.

Et c'était facile pour moi de trouver des hôtels, des magasins de café, et c'était là où j'étais, tu sais, en apprenant l'anglais des personnes qui se trouvent près de moi.

And it was easy for me to find hotels, coffee shops, and it was where I was, you know, learning English from the people around me.

J'ai entré dans la escola aussi, donc j'étais en train d'apprendre l'anglais.

I entered the school too, so I was learning English.

Et j'ai pensé que si c'est ça qui me ferait un travail, j'ai dû vraiment faire les choses qui m'en viendront.

And I thought that if that’s what would get me a job, I really had to do the things that would come to me.

Donc, j'ai décidé de faire ça.

So, I decided to do that.

Oui, j'y suis allée à l'école.

Yes, I went to school there.

J'ai appris l'anglais.

I learned English.

Et il y a quelques années, j'ai essayé de nouveau.

And a few years ago, I tried again.

Et j'étais déjà entourée.

And I was already surrounded.

Et j'étais déjà mariée, et mon mari a poussé, en fait, j'étais engagée, nous n'étions pas mariés, j'ai été mariée quand j'ai eu ce travail.

And I was already engaged, and my fiancé pushed, in fact, I was engaged, we weren't married, I got married when I got this job.

Donc, il m'a vraiment poussé, il m'a dit, « Réfléchis à ton CV, je pense que tu dois essayer de nouveau. »

So, he really pushed me, he told me, "Think about your CV, I think you should try again."

Et donc, j'ai fait, j'ai essayé de nouveau, et j'ai été offert un travail, et j'ai été vraiment appréciée à ce travail.

And so, I did it, I tried again, and I was offered a job, and I was really appreciated at that job.

Il y avait quelques collègues qui savaient que mon langage n'était pas très bon, et ils n'étaient pas gentils et soutenants,

There were a few colleagues who knew that my language skills were not very good, and they were not kind or supportive.

mais le gouverneur et le député ont vu quelque chose en moi, et ils m'ont vraiment soutenue.

But the governor and the deputy saw something in me, and they really supported me.

Donc, j'ai resté à ce travail pendant assez de temps.

So, I stayed in this job for quite a long time.

On s'est réunis pendant ce temps-là, quand j'étais en train de travailler, et c'était une expérience beaucoup meilleure.

We gathered during that time, while I was working, and it was a much better experience.

À ce point, après, je pense, un an, j'ai quitté ce travail, et j'ai reçu un autre travail dans le même secteur,

At this point, after what I think has been a year, I left that job, and I got another job in the same field.

dans le Dakar, qui était proprié d'une femme polonaise.

in the Dakar, which was owned by a Polish woman.
