Alors j'ai fait une année, c'était au début des années 80 à Grenoble et pendant cette année-là, on était obligé de faire un cours de traduction et j'ai adoré ce cours de traduction.

So I did a year, it was in the early 80s in Grenoble, and during that year, we were required to take a translation course, and I loved that translation course.

Alors en rentrant aux États-Unis dans ma petite université rurale dans l'État de New York, j'ai pris contact avec mon prof de français et je lui ai dit voilà c'est décidé ce que je veux faire demain.

So when I returned to the United States to my small rural university in New York, I contacted my French teacher and I told him, there you go, I’ve decided what I want to do tomorrow.

Mon avis c'est être traductrice et sa réponse était mais pour ça, premièrement, il faut avoir au moins deux langues étrangères et deuxièmement, les traducteurs vont être remplacés par les ordinateurs bientôt et comme je t'ai déjà dit, c'était au début des années 80.

My opinion is to be a translator and her response was that for that, first of all, you need to have at least two foreign languages and secondly, translators will soon be replaced by computers and as I already told you, that was in the early 80s.

And five years, about five years later, I did, I was living in Boston at the time and I did a master's in French literature because it was the school where I worked that paid for the master's.

C'était super intéressant.

Et finalement, quand ma fille est née en 2002, je me suis dit bon, je voudrais bien trouver un emploi où je pouvais travailler à la maison.

And finally, when my daughter was born in 2002, I told myself, well, I would like to find a job where I could work from home.

Est-ce qu'à ce moment-là, tu as repensé justement à ce professeur d'université qui t'avait dit qu'il n'y avait aucun avenir?

Oui, oui, oui, plusieurs fois.

Et je me suis dit mais pourquoi pas faire mes propres recherches, ce que j'aurais dû faire à l'époque.

And I said to myself, why not do my own research, which I should have done at the time.

J'ai fait, oui, dix ans plus tard, 1992.

So, the first ones.

Les premières années, c'était énormément d'essais et d'erreurs et parce qu'il y avait beaucoup moins de traducteurs freelance à l'époque où le côté entrepreneurial de la traduction freelance était beaucoup moins connu à l'époque, surtout.

In the early years, it was a lot of trial and error, and because there were many fewer freelance translators at the time, the entrepreneurial side of freelance translation was much less known back then, especially.

Et du coup, quand tu t'es lancé, comment tu as fait pour trouver tes premiers clients, pour faire ta première facture, ton premier devis?

So, when you got started, how did you go about finding your first clients, making your first invoice, your first quote?

J'imagine que tu as lu plein d'ouvrages, que tu t'es renseigné, que tu t'es formé, comme tu disais, essais, erreurs.

I imagine you have read a lot of works, that you have informed yourself, that you have trained, as you said, trial and error.

Oui, oui, sans blague, c'était un peu la cata parce que j'ai alors à cette époque là, on avait toujours, toujours aux États-Unis, l'annuaire pour le téléphone.

Yes, yes, no joke, it was a bit of a disaster because back then, we always had the phone directory in the United States.

On avait un annuaire sur papier qui s'appelait les pages jaunes pour les particuliers.

We had a printed directory called the Yellow Pages for individuals.

Particuliers, c'était les pages blanches.

Individuals, it was the white pages.

Et c'était vraiment une page blanche, papier blanc.

And it was really a blank page, white paper.

Et pour les entreprises, pour le business, c'était les pages jaunes imprimées sur papier jaune.

And for businesses, for the business, it was the yellow pages printed on yellow paper.

Alors, ma première journée comme traductrice indépendante, j'ai ouvert les pages jaunes.

So, my first day as a freelance translator, I opened the Yellow Pages.

Oui, j'ai ouvert les pages jaunes à la partie, à la section T, traduction.

Yes, I opened the yellow pages to the section, to the T section, translation.

Et j'ai commencé à appeler par téléphone toutes les agences de traduction dans l'État où j'habite, le Colorado.

And I started to call all the translation agencies in the state where I live, Colorado.

Et ce n'était pas le pire des débuts.

And it wasn't the worst of starts.

Alors, ce que je, actuellement, ce que je conseille aux traducteurs débutants qui veulent travailler pour des agences, ce n'est pas tellement différent de ça.

So, what I currently advise beginner translators who want to work for agencies is not so different from that.

But the methods are a bit more refined.
