Et dès qu'on est passés de l'autre côté, Ossip et moi,

J'ai senti que je n'avais plus besoin de tenir les rênes,

I felt that I no longer needed to hold the reins,

and this incredible power that I saw shining beneath its black fur

We were going faster and faster, higher and higher up the hill.

Together, we were the arrow flying from the bow to the target.

Puis arrivés au sommet de la colline,

Then, upon reaching the top of the hill,

le lac a surgi devant nous.

Ossip, ébloui, s'est cabré dans un hennissement de surprise.

Ossip, dazzled, reared up with a whinny of surprise.

C'est là que mon corps s'est envolé.

That's where my body took flight.

J'ai tout vu d'en haut.

I saw everything from above.

Ossip, debout sur ses pattes arrières,

Ossip, standing on his hind legs,

les oreilles dressées, la bouche ouverte sur ses dents gigantesques.

the ears perked up, the mouth open revealing its gigantic teeth.

Autour, la prairie brûlée de soleil,

Around, the field burned by the sun,

les cyprès doublés de leur ombre droite,

the cypress trees doubled by their straight shadow,

un troupeau de moutons épais de laine

a flock of sheep thick with wool

et le lac immense, vibrant de ses mille reflets étoilés.

and the immense lake, vibrating with its thousand starry reflections.

J'ai aussi vu la maison au loin.

I also saw the house in the distance.

After that, I don't remember very well.

J'avais le nez dans la terre humide

I had my nose in the damp earth.

et ma jambe me faisait souffrir.

m'a dit Stick plus tard en imitant aussi cabré les yeux fous.

told me Stick later while also mimicking a reared position with wild eyes.

Bob was doubled over with laughter saying that I would make quite a cowboy.

Je riais avec eux, étendu sur la table de la cuisine

I was laughing with them, lying on the kitchen table.

while Uncle John was putting the cold plaster strips on my leg.

On aurait dit qu'il sculptait une armure à même ma peau.

It looked like he was carving armor directly into my skin.

Madame Rose, elle, m'a fait une de ses potions magiques

Madame Rose gave me one of her magic potions.

avec des herbes du jardin plus amères encore que celles pour la grippe.

with garden herbs even more bitter than those for the flu.

« Bois, p'tit boy, et tout sera oublié », elle m'a dit.

"Drink, little boy, and all will be forgotten," she said to me.

Pourtant, je sais que je m'en souviendrai toujours.

Yet, I know that I will always remember it.

Assis dans le vieux fauteuil en osier,

Sitting in the old wicker chair,

ma jambe plâtrée allongée sur une malle,

my plastered leg stretched out on a trunk,

je fais tout pour graver chaque détail de cette journée dans ma mémoire.

I do everything to engrave every detail of this day in my memory.

En plissant les yeux,

Squinting,

je crois deviner dans les profondeurs

I believe I can guess in the depths.

la forme d'une armure dorée

the shape of a golden armor

dans laquelle, si je me plonge,

je pourrais me glisser.

I could slip away.

J'imagine ma course folle vers le lac avec Ossip,

I imagine my mad dash to the lake with Ossip,
