Pour celle-ci, toi, tu es partie au Cap Vert.

Là-bas, tu as créé, inventé l'album de famille que tu n'avais jamais eu, par exemple.

Enfin, mon père, il est parti du Cap Vert quand il avait 13 ans.

Finally, my father left Cape Verde when he was 13 years old.

Il n'y est jamais retourné, en tout cas à l'époque où j'avais fait la photo.

He never went back there, at least not during the time when I took the photo.

Enfin, la série n'y était encore jamais allée.

Finally, the series had never gone there before.

Et il y avait tout un silence, en fait, autour de son histoire et donc de la mienne.

And there was a complete silence, in fact, around his story and therefore mine.

Ma mère, elle est née en France.

My mother was born in France.

Son père, il est guadeloupéen et sa mère, elle est française de métropole.

His father is Guadeloupean and his mother is from mainland France.

Mais elle a grandi sans sa mère et sans son père.

But she grew up without her mother and without her father.

Donc, il y avait tout un truc qui a fait que je n'ai pas grandi avec des images de famille.

So, there was a whole thing that meant I didn't grow up with family images.

Ou il y en a qui sont arrivées beaucoup plus tard.

Mais donc, il y avait un petit peu cette frustration.

But there was a little bit of this frustration.

Et à côté de ça, bah, en tant que jeune enfant noir, bah, il y avait aussi très peu de représentations tout court.

Donc, moi, les seules images de référence que j'avais à l'époque...

So, for me, the only reference images I had at the time...

Donc, j'ai 30...

J'ai sur mes 34, donc, dans les années 90.

Enfin, les vieilles photos, c'était des photos qu'on pouvait voir en histoire.

J'ai quand même grandi beaucoup avec cette frustration.

Simple little things like that.

Mais quand, à l'école, on nous demandait de le faire, bah, moi, je ne pouvais pas.

En grandissant, bah, j'ai été frustrée.

Puis, avec le temps, bah, c'est moi qui finis par rejeter aussi toute cette partie de ma culture.

Donc, je n'avais pas...

Je n'ai pas eu d'héritage culturel institutionnel français, en tout cas.

I did not have any institutional French cultural heritage, in any case.

Et même culturel tout court, vu que mes parents, bah, ils étaient tous les deux déconnectés

And even culturally speaking, since my parents, well, they were both disconnected.

Donc, moi, je me suis retrouvée à faire de la photo parce que, en fait, c'était le seul

So, I found myself doing photography because, in fact, it was the only one.

Donc, Astin, à l'époque, qui allait très, très, très mal, encore plus que maintenant.

Et voilà, je me suis retrouvée chez les Bourges, à Courbevoie.

And there you go, I found myself at the Bourges, in Courbevoie.

Oh yes.

Changement d'ambiance.

Change of atmosphere.

Yes.

Donc, je faisais une heure et demie à aller, une heure et demie de retour de transport.

So, I was spending an hour and a half going there and an hour and a half coming back in transport.

Et j'étais avec...

J'étais en arts plastiques, du coup.

I was in visual arts, so.

Une option qu'il n'y avait pas, à côté de chez moi.

An option that was not available near my place.

Et c'est...

J'ai eu la chance de tomber sur, bah, voilà, des...

I was lucky to come across, well, here are some...

Enfin, une option qui m'a plu.

Finally, an option that I liked.

Et dans laquelle je suis restée.

Et donc, ça m'a vraiment servi à m'émanciper.

And so, it really helped me to emancipate myself.

Après, c'était extrêmement violent pour plein de raisons.

Parce que, du coup, j'étais avec des gens de puto, neuilles.

Mon premier voyage au Cap-Vert.

My first trip to Cape Verde.

Ça s'est fait parce que, en gros, je travaillais dans une grande fondation d'art contemporain

It happened because, basically, I was working in a large contemporary art foundation.

dont je ne citerai pas le nom.

Qui faisait, à l'époque, une exposition sur Malik Sidibé.

Vous vous retrouverez vite, du coup.

Et en fait, j'étais médiatrice culturelle là-bas.

And in fact, I was a cultural mediator there.

Et j'aidais aussi la chargée des publics.

And I also assisted the person in charge of public relations.

Moi, la médiation, c'est un truc que j'adorais.

For me, mediation is something I loved.

Et j'adorais le travail de Malik Sidibé.

And I loved the work of Malik Sidibé.

Et en fait, ça a été l'expérience...

And in fact, it was the experience...

J'en avais eu d'autres, des expériences hardcore en tant que femme noire dans ce milieu-là.

I had other experiences, hardcore experiences as a black woman in that environment.

Notamment pour une grosse galerie photo aussi.

Notably for a large photo gallery as well.

Mais là, c'était intense.

Et j'ai décidé de partir au Cap Vert.

And I decided to leave for Cape Verde.

À ce moment-là, en fait.

Et donc, ça faisait plusieurs mois que je demandais à mon père de me mettre en contact avec ma famille.

And so, I had been asking my father for several months to put me in touch with my family.

Il voulait pas.

He didn't want to.

Et du coup, j'ai contacté ma famille sur Facebook.

So, I contacted my family on Facebook.

Toute seule.

All alone.

Sans le dire à mon père.

Without telling my father.

Et euh...

And um...

Ils m'ont répondu direct.

They answered me right away.

Et j'y suis allée.

And I went there.

Et c'était trop bien.

And it was so good.

C'était super intéressant.

It was super interesting.

C'était super intense aussi parce que...

It was super intense too because...

Bah, de voir des gens qui te ressemblent...

Well, seeing people who look like you...

En plus, j'y suis allée seule, quoi.

Besides, I went there alone, you know.

Pour deux mois.

For two months.

Donc, c'était quand même...

So, it was after all...

Assez lourd.

Quite heavy.

Après, j'avais déjà pas mal voyagé seule.

Afterwards, I had already traveled quite a bit alone.

Notamment, j'étais déjà allée au Brésil, à Salvador.

Deux endroits du monde qui sont très loin l'un de l'autre mais qui se ressemblent beaucoup.

C'est parce qu'au contraire, lui, il avait plutôt honte de ce que lui, il était devenu.

j'ai essayé de refaire un peu le puzzle.

Et j'ai cherché des images que j'ai pas trouvées.

And I searched for images that I couldn't find.

J'ai retrouvé une photo de mon grand-père.

I found a photo of my grandfather.

Mais c'est tout, quoi.

Et donc, ce premier voyage-là, tu pars avec un appareil photo.

So, on that first trip, you leave with a camera.

Et quelles sont les photos, du coup, que tu décides de prendre en main ?

En vrai, je partais pas vraiment avec une idée bien précise.

Et en plus, j'avais pas encore fait de vraies séries, quoi.

J'avais travaillé un peu sur des trucs, mais c'était pas pensé de cette façon-là.

Donc, je suis partie avec mon appareil photo argentique.

Ouais.

Il y avait aussi un truc...

C'était dur aussi pour moi d'arriver dans un pays que je connais pas,

It was hard for me too to arrive in a country I don't know.

Et en plus, avec cet objet qui est aussi un objet de la colonisation, quoi.

C'était dur pour moi de pas leur donner l'impression que je venais ici par intérêt.

Et en fait, j'arrivais pas trop.

Mais comme y'en avait pas, bah, je me suis basée sur leurs récits pour recréer des photos

But since there weren't any, well, I based myself on their stories to recreate photos.

Et donc, bah, en fait, chaque image, elle est reliée à une fausse légende.

Et ils retracent un bout de la vie de... Voilà.

Donc, t'es vraiment entre à la fois le documentaire et la fiction, à chaque fois.

Enfin, c'est un peu, ouais, onirique et intemporel, quoi.

Enfin, je me suis permis une espèce de liberté vu que, de toute façon, y'avait pas de traçabilité claire.
