Je n'ai absolument personne dans mon entourage qui est artistique.
I have absolutely nobody in my circle who is artistic.
Je suis vraiment une pure laine québécoise.
I am really a true blue Quebecer.
Mes parents viennent de la campagne, cultivateurs, pauvres, une grosse famille.
My parents come from the countryside, farmers, poor, with a large family.

Moi, je suis toute seule. Mes parents avaient 10, 11, 12 frères et sœurs.
Me, I am all alone. My parents had 10, 11, 12 brothers and sisters.
Ils viennent de cette époque-là, des années...
They come from that time, the years...
Ils sont nés dans les années 40.
They were born in the 1940s.
C'est la Révolution tranquille.
It's the Quiet Revolution.
Ils voulaient justement changer de vie, accéder à une meilleure qualité de vie.
They wanted to change their lives, to access a better quality of life.
Mes parents, eux, ils ont juste eu un enfant qui est en moi.
My parents only had one child, and that is me.
Leur but dans la vie, c'était de me donner le meilleur de ce qu'ils pouvaient.
Their goal in life was to give me the best of what they could.
Mais mes parents n'avaient pas beaucoup de culture.
But my parents did not have much culture.
On n'allait pas au musée.
We weren't going to the museum.
C'est vraiment culture populaire.

Et puis, autour, mes tantes, mes oncles, tout ça,
And then, around, my aunts, my uncles, all that,
c'était vraiment...

C'est la famille typique québécoise, vraiment chaleureuse, très, très familiale.
It's the typical Quebec family, really warm, very, very family-oriented.
Mon père a toujours été en affaires avec ses frères.
My father has always been in business with his brothers.
Ma mère était impliquée.
My mother was involved.
Mes tantes, on était toujours 25 à la maison.
My aunts, we were always 25 at home.
Mais moi, j'étais enfant unique, étrangement, dans tout ça.
But me, I was an only child, strangely, in all of this.

En quelque part, c'est pas des artistes, mais c'est des créateurs,
Somewhere, they're not artists, but they are creators.
dans le sens où ils se sont créés une vie.

Ils ont toujours été en affaires.

Mon père est encore vivant.

C'est un homme extrêmement habile de ses mains.

Puis moi, je pense que j'ai la fibre créative.

Je pense que dans un autre contexte, dans une autre situation sociale,

probablement, s'il était né à une autre époque, dans une autre famille,

il serait probablement devenu architecte ou peut-être même artiste.

Tu sais, à l'époque, les femmes, quand elles se mariaient,

Ils prenaient des cours de couture.

Donc, quand elle prenait ses cours de couture,

Lui, comme il était extrêmement manuel, il aimait ça.

Fait qu'il disait, « Moi, moi, moi, t'as le fer. »
He said, "Me, me, me, you've got the iron."
Il était super habile de ses mains.
He was super skilled with his hands.
Fait qu'il aimait ça faire n'importe quoi.
He liked doing anything.
Donc, quand j'étais petite, tous les projets,
So, when I was little, all the projects,
tous les projets que j'avais, on les faisait ensemble.
All the projects I had, we did them together.
On faisait de la couture, on faisait de la broderie,
We were sewing, we were embroidering,
on faisait du tricot, on faisait...
we were knitting, we were...
On créait des cabanes, on créait des pièces,
We built huts, we created rooms,
le théâtre, il montait mes décors.
The theater, he was setting up my sets.
Même comme photographe, quand j'ai commencé,
Even as a photographer, when I started,
il m'a beaucoup aidée parce que toutes mes idées,
he helped me a lot because all of my ideas,
il m'aidait à les réaliser.
he was helping me to achieve them.
Je lui ai créé des éclairages, il me montait des éclairages.
I created lighting for him, he was setting up lighting for me.
On allait acheter des affaires chez Rona,
We were going to buy some things at Rona,
puis on montait des affaires.
Then we were starting up businesses.
Donc, c'était beaucoup mon...
So, it was mostly my...
C'est comme mon handyman, puis en même temps,
It's like my handyman, then at the same time,
mon technicien, dans le sens que moi, j'avais des idées,
my technician, in the sense that I had ideas,
des idées de vêtements.
clothing ideas.
On faisait les patrons.
We were the bosses.
C'est lui qui faisait ça.
It was him who did that.
Il est extrêmement habile.
He is extremely skilled.
Donc, c'est ça.

Ça, c'est plus mon background, mais j'ai pas voyagé beaucoup

avec mes parents.

J'ai pas eu accès à beaucoup de culture.

Mais étant donné que c'était super important

de me donner le meilleur,

bien, ils m'ont envoyée dès le primaire

Vraiment, j'étais poussée, vraiment poussée.

où je fréquentais vraiment des gens très, très différents,

beaucoup plus éduqués,

beaucoup plus fortunés,
much wealthier,

avec une expérience de la vie beaucoup plus riche
with a much richer life experience
en termes de voyage puis de nourriture puis de culture.
in terms of travel, then food, then culture.
Donc, ça m'a beaucoup, beaucoup allumée
So, it really turned me on a lot.
de pouvoir sentir qu'il y avait tout ce monde-là à découvrir.
to be able to feel that there was all this world to discover.
Donc, mes parents m'ont permis, à travers mon éducation,
So, my parents allowed me, through my upbringing,
sans qu'eux puissent me le donner,
without them being able to give it to me,
de me permettre de découvrir tout ça.
for allowing me to discover all of this.
Ça a réveillé une curiosité.
It awakened a curiosity.
Je te dirais, au niveau de la photo, de l'image,
I would tell you, in terms of the photo, the image,
je pense que quand tu vis dans la ville,
I think that when you live in the city,
tu vis tout le temps dans des mondes aussi parallèles comme ça,
do you always live in such parallel worlds like this?
tu inventes beaucoup de choses dans ta tête.
You invent a lot of things in your head.
Puis aussi, je pense que le fait d'être enfant unique,
Also, I think that being an only child,
tu vis beaucoup dans ta tête parce que...
you live a lot in your head because...
T'as personne avec qui jouer au quotidien.
You have no one to play with on a daily basis.
C'est ça.

Puis mes parents étaient très fusionnels.

Ils avaient vraiment tout le temps, tu sais,

leur business ensemble, leur vie ensemble.

Mes parents, puis moi, j'étais comme...

Tu sais, j'étais très aimée, puis tout ça.
You know, I was very loved, then all of that.
Mais je veux dire, j'étais en arrière,
But I mean, I was in the back,
j'étais l'enfant qui était, tu sais, comme un peu toute seule.
I was the child who was, you know, kind of a little alone.
Fait que je me faisais des mondes dans ma tête.
So I was making worlds in my head.
Univers artistiques, c'était vraiment important pour moi
Artistic universes were really important to me.
parce que ça me permettait de...
because it allowed me to...
Tu sais, quand je faisais de la couture,
You know, when I was sewing,
je faisais des pièces de théâtre dans mon sous-sol,
I was performing plays in my basement,
ça me permettait de créer des univers.
It allowed me to create worlds.
Puis la photo est arrivée vraiment...
Then the photo really arrived...
Pas parce que je pense que j'avais un intérêt pour la photo,
Not because I think I had an interest in photography,
mais parce que j'avais un intérêt pour la création.
but because I had an interest in creation.
Puis on dirait que la photo, c'était comme un outil
Then it seems that the photo was like a tool.
pour documenter ça, tu sais,
to document that, you know,
pour avoir un élément concret de tout ça.
to have a concrete element of all this.
Puis c'est vraiment venu par...
Then it really came about by...
Ça, c'est la seule personne dans ma famille
That is the only person in my family.
qui était un petit peu plus artistique.
who was a little bit more artistic.
Pas artistique, nécessairement,
Not necessarily artistic,
mais j'avais une tante qui était professeure,
but I had an aunt who was a teacher,
la soeur de ma mère, puis elle voyageait,
my mother's sister, then she was traveling,
puis elle avait appris à faire de la photo.
Then she had learned to take photos.
Fait qu'elle avait toujours une caméra avec elle.
The fact that she always had a camera with her.
Fait que très, très jeune, genre 7-8 ans,
So very, very young, like 7-8 years old,
même avant, 4 ans, 5 ans,
even before, 4 years, 5 years,
elle prenait des photos, tu sais.
She was taking pictures, you know.
Puis à cette époque-là, les photos,
Then at that time, the photos,
c'était vraiment des petits Kodaks, là.
They were really little Kodaks, there.
C'était pas des grosses caméras.
They weren't big cameras.
Fait que quelqu'un qui avait une caméra,
So someone who had a camera,
une vraie caméra réflexe, ça, c'était impressionnant.
A real reflex camera, that was impressive.
Fait que j'étais curieuse de ça.
So I was curious about that.
Donc, je la voyais beaucoup prendre des photos,
So, I saw her taking a lot of photos.
fait que ça m'a intéressée assez jeune,
made it so that I became interested at quite a young age,
ce qu'elle faisait.

Puis assez tôt, là, je pense vers 14 ans,
Then quite early, I think around 14 years old,
à peu près, elle m'a donné son appareil photo.
About that, she gave me her camera.
Parce que j'en parlais beaucoup, puis elle m'a dit,
Because I talked about it a lot, then she told me,
bien, écoute, je pense que ça t'intéresse,
Well, listen, I think this will interest you.
je vais te donner ma caméra.
I am going to give you my camera.
J'en fais moins de la photo, puis c'était,
I do less photography now, then it was,
je m'appelle le Pentax K1000, là,
My name is the Pentax K1000, there.
que, tu sais, à l'époque, était...

Puis là, c'était en pellicule, là.
Then there, it was on film, there.
Oui, oui, c'est le mien qui existait pas.

Donc, elle m'a donné ça.

Je me souviens d'une chambre noire dans mon sous-sol,

puis j'ai commencé à faire de la photo,

puis c'est ça, tu sais, tout était un sujet,

mes amis, les plantes du salon,
my friends, the plants in the living room,
n'importe quoi, là, tu sais, vraiment,
Nonsense, you know, really,
je prenais des photos d'à peu près n'importe quoi.
I was taking pictures of just about anything.
Mais comme j'avais un intérêt pour, tu sais,
But since I had an interest in, you know,
des univers, puis raconter des histoires,
universes, then tell stories,
bien, rapidement, la mode aussi, tu sais,
well, quickly, fashion too, you know,
j'étais une jeune adolescente, là,
I was a young teenager, there,
les filles à 15, 16 ans,
girls at 15, 16 years old,
évidemment, on aime la mode en général, là.
Of course, we love fashion in general, there.
Moi, j'étais ce type de fille-là,
I was that kind of girl.
donc...
so...
Donc, c'était le fun.
So, it was fun.
J'habillais mes amis, je les prenais en photo,
I was dressing my friends, I was taking pictures of them,
puis bon, je faisais ça vraiment pour le fun.
Well, I was really doing that for fun.
J'avais aucune idée qu'on pouvait faire ça dans la vie,
I had no idea you could do that in life,
absolument pas.
absolutely not.
Mais je lisais les magazines de mode,
But I was reading fashion magazines,
genre, tu sais, à l'époque, c'était...
like, you know, back in the day, it was...
C'était « Fille d'aujourd'hui »,
It was "Girl of Today,"
c'était « Clin d'œil »,
it was "Wink,"
c'était vraiment...
it was really...
Il n'y avait pas énormément, mais bon, tu sais,
There wasn't a lot, but you know,
c'est plus tard, là, que j'ai vraiment, tu sais,
It's later, there, that I really, you know,
eu un contact.
had a contact.
C'était très, très, très naïf.

C'était complètement instinctif.

Il n'y avait pas de référence.

Je n'avais pas de culture dans ce sens-là.

D'éducation.

Puis c'est ça, tu as continué tes études à l'université,

mais jamais en photo, au niveau pratique ou technique.

En fait, tu sais, de par mon histoire avec mes parents,

qui ont tellement toute leur vie travaillé fort
who have worked so hard all their lives
pour que je sois la personne la plus épanouie,
so that I can be the most fulfilled person,
mais aussi professionnellement,
but also professionally,
pour eux, ça a toujours été comme pas une option,
for them, it has always been like not an option,
le monde artistique,
the artistic world,
dans le sens que pour eux, c'était évident,
in the sense that for them, it was obvious,
ils voulaient que leur fille soit médecin ou avocate
They wanted their daughter to be a doctor or a lawyer.
ou en finance.

Ils voulaient vraiment que je sois une grande femme.
They really wanted me to be a great woman.
J'ai vraiment été élevée par...
I was really raised by...
Tu sais,
You know,
des parents ultra-féministes.
ultra-feminist parents.
Mon père, en particulier, vraiment féministe aussi.
My father, in particular, is really a feminist too.
Tu sais, qu'il voulait que je sois une grande femme,
You know, he wanted me to be a great woman,
indépendante, puis que je fasse des grandes choses,
independent, since I am going to do great things,
mais ça passait pas par la culture.
but it didn't go through culture.
Ça passait vraiment par...

Tu sais, eux autres, il fallait que je sois une professionnelle.
You know, for them, I had to be a professional.
Donc, c'était pas une option.
So, it wasn't an option.
J'avais pas d'amis non plus.
I didn't have any friends either.
Tu sais, dans ma vie,
You know, in my life,
tout mon groupe d'amis au secondaire,
all my group of friends from high school,
c'était toutes des filles vraiment brillantes
they were all really bright girls
qui voulaient justement être médecins, ingénieurs,
who specifically wanted to be doctors, engineers,
femmes d'affaires, présidentes de compagnie.
businesswomen, company presidents.
J'avais pas beaucoup d'artistes autour de moi,
I didn't have many artists around me,
fait que c'était même pas quelque chose que...
made it so that it wasn't even something that...
Je me suis jamais posée.
I have never settled down.
J'avais pas beaucoup de questions-là.
I didn't have many questions there.
J'ai fait mes sciences santé, tout ça, au cégep,
I studied health sciences and all that in college.
puis à un moment donné,
then at some point,
j'étais dans un cours en sciences au cégep,
I was in a science class at college.
et il y avait un partenaire d'équipe
and there was a team partner
qui s'est remis en question,
who has questioned themselves,
puis qui m'a dit,
then who told me,
« Ah, je pense que je vais aller en communication à l'université. »
"Ah, I think I am going to study communication at university."
Moi, j'ai fait, « Hein? C'est quoi, communication? »
Me, I said, "Huh? What is communication?"
Tu sais, il m'a dit, « Bien, lui, il voulait aller à l'UQAM, je crois. »
You know, he told me, "Well, he wanted to go to UQAM, I believe."
Fait que c'était très technique.
So it was very technical.
Bien, tu sais, cinéma, les médias, tout ça, publicité.
Well, you know, cinema, the media, all that, advertising.
Puis là, j'étais, « Ah! Ça a l'air donc bien génial.
Then I was like, "Oh! That looks really great."
J'aimerais ça, faire ça. »
"I would like that, to do that."
J'avais même pas cliqué là-dessus.
I hadn't even clicked on that.
J'avais jamais...
I had never...
C'était pas une option, tu sais.
It wasn't an option, you know.
Fait que quand j'ai vu ça,
So when I saw that,
là, je suis revenue chez moi,
there, I came back home,
puis j'ai fait, « Hé, mais moi,
Then I said, "Hey, but me,
j'ai pas envie vraiment d'être médecin.
I really don't want to be a doctor.
Ça me tente pas.
I’m not tempted.
J'aime pas cet univers-là. »
"I don't like that universe."
Fait que là, je me suis informée,
So now, I got informed,
puis là, j'ai décidé de m'inscrire en communication à l'université.
Then I decided to enroll in communication at the university.
Donc là, encore une fois, c'était la photo.
So there, once again, it was the photo.
Mais sauf que communication, c'était déjà plus proche, là.
But except that communication, it was already closer, there.
Donc, quand je suis allée en communication à l'université,
So, when I went to university for communications,
j'ai...
I have...
Je voulais juste,
I just wanted,
je voulais juste faire tous mes projets en photo.
I just wanted to do all my projects in photo.
Dès que je pouvais trouver une option...
As soon as I could find an option...
Puis bon, j'étais aussi vraiment, vraiment, vraiment passionnée par la mode.
Well, I was also really, really, really passionate about fashion.
Donc, dès que j'avais une option de, par exemple,
So, as soon as I had an option to, for example,
faire un projet, bien là, j'essayais de trouver
to make a project, well there, I was trying to find
comment je pouvais aller faire une entrevue au L-Québec
how could I go for an interview at L-Québec
ou, tu sais, parler avec un styliste
Oh, you know, talking to a stylist.
ou un photographe ou, tu sais,
or a photographer or, you know,
j'avais beaucoup de...
I had a lot of...
C'est ça qui m'intéressait.
That's what interested me.
Fait que j'essayais de trouver des leads dans ce sens-là.
So I was trying to find leads in that direction.
Jusqu'à temps qu'à un moment donné, j'aille à un party
Until at some point, I go to a party.
puis que je tombe sur un ami du secondaire.
since I run into a high school friend.
Puis là, bien, « Qu'est-ce que tu fais?
Then there, well, "What are you doing?"
T'es rendu où? » Tout ça.
"Where have you gotten to?" All that.
Puis il me dit, « Ah, moi, je suis photographe. »
Then he said to me, "Ah, me, I'm a photographer."
Je dis, « Wow, t'es photographe?
I say, "Wow, are you a photographer?"
C'est donc bien hot! »
"It's really hot then!"
Je fais, « J'aimerais...
I say, "I would like..."
J'adorerais ça, faire ça. »
"I would love that, to do that."
Là, je me mets à lui raconter que je fais de la photo,
There, I start telling her that I do photography,
que j'ai mis caméra, que je fais tous mes projets.
that I put on camera, that I do all my projects.
Bien, il dit, « Mais pourquoi t'es pas photographe? »
Well, he says, "But why aren't you a photographer?"
Alors, ça a vraiment été un déclic, là, absolument,
So, it really was a trigger, absolutely,
parce que j'avais jamais réfléchi à ça.
because I had never thought about that.
Mais vraiment, tu sais, c'était complètement naïf.
But really, you know, it was completely naive.
J'ai fait, « Ah! Bien oui, je pourrais faire ça,
I said, "Oh! Well yes, I could do that."
être photographe. Ça, c'est ça.
to be a photographer. That's it.
Je peux vivre de ça. »
"I can live off that."
J'étais vraiment naïve, tu sais.
I was really naive, you know.
Donc là, il m'a dit, « Écoute, fais-toi une carte d'affaires,
So there, he said to me, "Listen, make yourself a business card,
puis propose tes services à du monde et tout ça. »
"Then offer your services to people and all that."
Puis là, bien, je trouvais que c'était une bonne idée.
Then I thought it was a good idea.
Fait que finalement, j'ai commencé à avoir
So finally, I started to have.
des petites gigs de mannequins,
small modeling gigs,
dans les agences de mannequins,
in modeling agencies,
parce que je photographiais...
because I was photographing...
Il y avait beaucoup de monde de la mode,
There were many people from the fashion industry,
de parler de bar que je fréquentais.
to talk about the bar I used to go to.
Je crois que je tombais sur des filles
I think I was falling for girls.
que je trouvais super belles,
that I found super beautiful,
qui étaient souvent mannequins, sur la rue Saint-Laurent.
who were often models, on Saint-Laurent street.
À l'époque, la rue Saint-Laurent, le chef de café,
At the time, Saint-Laurent Street, the coffee shop,
tout ça, le monde se tenait là, puis les mannequins, tout ça.
All of that, the world was standing there, then the models, all of that.
Fait que j'avais déjà commencé à faire ça.
So I had already started doing that.
Fait que j'ai dit, « Bon, bien, écoute,
So I said, "Well, listen,
je vais tenter ma chance. »
"I'm going to try my luck."
Puis quand j'ai commencé à avoir un peu d'argent,
Then when I started to have a little money,
mais tu sais, rien, là, juste pour payer mes films.
But you know, nothing, just to pay for my movies.
Puis j'étais là, « Ah! Je peux pas croire
Then I was there, "Ah! I can't believe
que je pourrais faire ça dans la vie. »
"that I could do that in life."
