Sie haben vor ziemlich genau einem Jahr das Heddesheim-Blog ins Leben gerufen,

They launched the Heddesheim Blog exactly one year ago.

mittlerweile noch zwei andere Blogs, Lokalblogs. Erzählen Sie mal, was ist so Ihr lokales Imperium, wie sieht das aus?

In the meantime, two other blogs have emerged, local blogs. Tell me, what does your local empire look like?

Mein lokales Imperium liegt in Nordbaden im Rhein-Neckar-Kreis.

My local empire is located in Northern Baden in the Rhein-Neckar district.

Alle Gemeinden haben so roundabout 10.000 Einwohner.

All municipalities have around 10,000 inhabitants.

Vor einem Jahr kam ich zu dem Heddesheim-Blog durch Zufall, absoluter Zufall.

A year ago, I came to the Heddesheim blog by chance, pure chance.

Ich selbst lebe in Heddesheim und erfuhr irgendwann im März von einer geplanten großen Unternehmensansiedlung.

I myself live in Heddesheim and learned at some point in March about a planned large-company settlement.

200.000 Quadratmeter Logistik, viele LKWs.

200,000 square meters of logistics, many trucks.

Jetzt muss man wissen, Heddesheim ist von Verkehr umzingelt.

Now one must know, Heddesheim is surrounded by traffic.

Wir haben vier Autobahnen in jeder Himmelsrichtung und fünf oder sechs sogenannte übergeordnete Straßen,

Landesstraßen, die nicht verkehrsberuhigt werden können.

Das heißt, die Heddesheimer leiden extrem unter Verkehr.

That means the people of Heddesheim suffer extremely from traffic.

Es war ein riesen Aufreger-Thema.

It was a huge controversial topic.

Ich habe angefangen, privat dazu zu recherchieren und war am 21. April,

I started to research this privately and was on April 21,

das war der eigentliche Starttag, obwohl es das Blog dann noch nicht gab,

that was the actual start date, even though the blog didn't exist yet,

auf einer Bürgerversammlung, auf der der Bürgermeister Michael Kessler angekündigt hat,

at a town hall meeting, where the mayor Michael Kessler announced,

ein bedeutendes Unternehmen nach Heddesheim zu bringen.

to bring a significant company to Heddesheim.

Als Journalist habe ich mich natürlich sofort gefragt, was heißt bedeutend?

As a journalist, I naturally asked myself right away, what does significant mean?

Habe zu dem Unternehmen recherchiert und fand im Mannheimer Morgen im Archiv,

I researched the company and found in the Mannheimer Morgen in the archive,

Überschriften wie Betriebsratschef zusammengeschlagen, Politik appelliert an Unternehmen,

Headlines like Works Council Chairman beaten up, politics appeals to companies,

jetzt schaltet sich der Landrat ein.

Now the district administrator is getting involved.

Also nur negative Schlagzeilen, negative Artikel zu diesem bedeutenden Unternehmen.

So only negative headlines, negative articles about this significant company.

Das habe ich als Presseschau am 28. April ins Internet gestellt.

I posted that as a press review on the internet on April 28.

Nach ein paar Tagen brach dieser Server, das war blogger.com, immer wieder zusammen,

After a few days, this server, which was blogger.com, kept crashing.

weil offensichtlich so viele Zugriffe da waren, Mund-zu-Mund-Propaganda.

because obviously there were so many visits, word-of-mouth propaganda.

Dann zog ich das Ganze um auf einen professionelleren Server.

Then I moved everything to a more professional server.

Und...

And...

Seitdem gibt es das Heddesheim-Blog.

Since then, there has been the Heddesheim Blog.

Sie haben auch einen journalistischen Hintergrund, muss man dazu sagen.

Sie haben als Journalist gearbeitet.

You have worked as a journalist.

Jetzt ist ein Jahr rum. Ist das jetzt Fulltime?

Und vielleicht soll ich den journalistischen Hintergrund erklären.

Ich bin eigentlich da wieder angekommen, wo ich mal herkam.

Während des Studiums in Mannheim, ich habe Politik, Germanistik, Philosophie studiert,

habe ich drei Jahre für den Mannheimer Morgen gearbeitet, lokal.

I worked for the Mannheimer Morgen for three years, locally.

Kenne also die Lokalberichterstattung, komme daher

und war dann ab Ende 94, Anfang 95 durch ein Aufregerthema

Das habe ich für die Zeit damals geschrieben.

I wrote that for the time back then.

Und das war meine Eintrittskarte in den überregionalen Journalismus.

And that was my ticket into regional journalism.

Da habe ich mich dann auch die ganze Zeit rumgetrieben bis 2009

I hung around there the whole time until 2009.

und bin dann durch Zufall, wie gesagt, in diesen Regionaljournalismus

and then by chance, as I said, ended up in this regional journalism

oder Lokaljournalismus zurückgekommen und fühle mich total wohl.

Ich habe den Spaß meines Lebens.

Weil Sie nah dran sind.

Was Sie machen, kriegen Sie sofort mit.

What you do, you will notice immediately.

Die Leute sprechen Sie auf der Straße an.

People approach you on the street.

Sie kriegen nachts einen Anruf mit anonymem Arschlauch.

You get a call at night from an anonymous butt hose.

Und wieder aufgelegt.

And hung up again.

Ja, wieder aufgelegt.

Yes, reissued.

Irgendjemand legt Ihnen ein Nagelbrett vor das Auto,

Someone is placing a nail board in front of your car,

weil Sie einen Kommentar geschrieben haben.

because you wrote a comment.

Also das sind so die negativen Seiten.

So those are the negative aspects.

Aber es passieren auch Dinge und das finde ich richtig, richtig spannend.

But things also happen, and I find that really, really exciting.

Im Sommer, drei Monate nachdem das Blog gestartet war,

In the summer, three months after the blog had started,

hatte ich mal wieder einen meiner bösen Kommentare geschrieben.

I had once again written one of my mean comments.

Wobei ich sagen muss, diese Kommentare sind eigentlich für mich

Sie sind immer sehr gut recherchiert.

Sie machen meistens mehr Arbeit als jede andere Form.

They usually create more work than any other form.

Da sprach mich vor dem Supermarkt eine Dame an und sagte,

A lady approached me in front of the supermarket and said,

Sie sind doch Herr Prothner.

You are Mr. Prothner, aren't you?

Da sage ich, ja.

Then I say, yes.

Darf ich Sie mal was fragen?

May I ask you something?

Da sage ich, ja klar können Sie mich was fragen.

Well, I say, yes sure you can ask me something.

Ich habe Ihren Kommentar gelesen.

I have read your comment.

Ich bin ja modern.

I am modern.

Ich bin jetzt 65, aber ich bin jeden Tag am Computer.

I am 65 now, but I am on the computer every day.

Und als ich den gelesen habe, habe ich mich gefragt,

And when I read that, I wondered,

darf der das so schreiben?

Is he allowed to write it that way?

Da habe ich gesagt, natürlich darf ich das so schreiben.

Und was in Heddesheim passiert und was ich wirklich toll und spannend finde

durch dieses Lokalblog, ich habe den Eindruck,

dass es zu einer Art Repolitisierung der Gesellschaft vor Ort kommt.

that there is a kind of repoliticization of society on the ground.

Ja, die Leute diskutieren viel mehr.

Yes, people discuss much more.

Sie haben mit einmal eine neue Stimme.

You suddenly have a new voice.

Ich bin ja nicht die Einzige.

I'm not the only one.

Ich habe mittlerweile auch ein paar freie Mitarbeiter.

I have also now a few freelancers.

Ich habe andere Lokalpolitiker, die immer mal wieder einen Text für mich schreiben.

I have other local politicians who occasionally write a text for me.

Das heißt, es findet einfach zum Mann am Morgen der Monopolist ist vor Ort

That means it simply takes place for the man in the morning; the monopolist is on site.

eine Alternative statt, die es vorher nicht gab.

an alternative that did not exist before.

Dementsprechend sind auch die Reaktionen im Ort ganz unterschiedlich.

Accordingly, the reactions in the village are quite varied.

Also es gibt sehr viel Zustimmung.

So there is a lot of agreement.

Es gibt natürlich auch sehr viel Kritik und sehr viel Ablehnung auch.

There is of course also a lot of criticism and a lot of rejection as well.

Aber die Menschen mussten in den ersten Monaten erst lernen,

But people had to learn in the first months,

mit diesem neuen Medium umzugehen.

A, weil es Internet ist. Ist denn das was Gescheites?

Dann haben sie geguckt, okay, der Brotmann, wenn man den bei Google eingibt,

dann kommt Zeit, Rundschau, Süddeutsche, alle möglichen großen Medien.

Then comes Zeit, Rundschau, Süddeutsche, all sorts of major media.

Dann merken sie, okay, der kann schon was.

Then they realize, okay, he can do something.

Dann wurde ich ja sehr, sehr viel interviewt.

Then I was interviewed a lot.

Das ist ja nicht das erste Interview, das ich jetzt hier gebe,

This isn't the first interview I've given here.

weil die Kollegen deutschlandweit einfach geschaut haben, was macht denn der Brotmann da?

Because the colleagues nationwide simply looked at what the bread man was doing.

Dadurch, dass ich vorher zwölf Jahre im Medienjournalismus war,

Having spent twelve years in media journalism before,

kennen mich natürlich auch viele Kollegen.

Many colleagues of course know me too.

Und haben einfach aus Neugier geschaut und fanden das Projekt toll.

And they just looked out of curiosity and found the project great.

Genauso toll wie ich.

Just as great as I am.

Genau, aber diese Repolitisierung, das interessiert mich nochmal.

Exactly, but this repoliticization, that interests me again.

Man würde ja denken, ist eher so ein bisschen auch so kleinstädtische, ländliche Gegend.

One would think it's more of a small-town, rural area.

Ist ein Dorf.

It is a village.

Ein Dorf.

A village.

Ganz eindeutig ist es ein Dorf.

It is clearly a village.

Dann würde man sagen, komm mit dem Blog an, liest eh keiner.

Then one would say, come with the blog, no one reads it anyway.

Doch, weil Heddesheim hat sich in den vergangenen 30 Jahren ungefähr verdoppelt.

Yes, because Heddesheim has roughly doubled in size over the past 30 years.

Wir haben 11.500 Einwohner knapp.

We have just about 11,500 inhabitants.

Und darunter sind natürlich viele Familien,

And of course, there are many families among them,

die zugezogen sind.

the newcomers.

Das sind Manager, mittleres Management, gutverdienende Leute.

These are managers, middle management, well-paid people.

Die arbeiten bei SAP, bei Mercedes, bei ABB.

They work at SAP, at Mercedes, at ABB.

Alles große Firmen.

All big companies.

Und die lesen das?

And they read that?

Und die lesen das, ja.

And they read that, yes.

Und die kommentieren das auch.

And they comment on that as well.

Und wie merken Sie diese Repolitisierung?

And how do you notice this repoliticization?

Abgesehen davon, dass Sie auf der Straße angesprochen werden?

Aside from the fact that you are approached on the street?

Eigentlich meistens über diese Kommentare.

Actually mostly about these comments.

Das wird sehr gut angenommen.

This is being very well received.

Dann natürlich über E-Mail.

Then of course by email.

Also ich stehe mit, ich würde sagen, locker 200 Bürgern.

So I am in touch with, I would say, about 200 citizens.

Im E-Mail-Kontakt.

In email contact.

Und ein harter Kern, ungefähr 10 Prozent im täglichen.

And a hard core, about 10 percent daily.

Die schicken mir Themen zu, die sagen, ich habe etwas gehört.

They send me topics, saying I heard something.

Oder dazu ist mir noch etwas eingefallen.

Or I just thought of something else.

Haben Sie den Aspekt schon bedacht?

Have you already considered that aspect?

Also, wenn Sie so wollen, eine Art ausgelagerte Redaktion.

Da sage ich jetzt ein bisschen scherzhaft, weil das kommt natürlich aus dem bürgerlichen Engagement,

I say that somewhat jokingly, because it obviously comes from civic engagement.

Das sind keine Journalisten.

Aber sehr, sehr engagierte Leute.

But very, very dedicated people.

Wie viel Lese haben Sie jeden Tag oder jeden Monat gesehen?

How much reading have you done every day or every month?

Das ist ein bisschen schwierig zu beantworten.

That's a bit difficult to answer.

Da muss ich ehrlich sagen, ich verwende die Statistik von 1&1.

I have to honestly say that I use the statistics from 1&1.

Das ist mein Provider in Karlsruhe.

That is my provider in Karlsruhe.

Danach habe ich etwa 3500 Lese auf dem Heddesheim-Blog.

After that, I have about 3500 reads on the Heddesheim blog.

Jetzt nach einem Jahr.

Tag oder pro Tag?

Und auf den beiden anderen Blogs so 700 bis 800.

Die sind auch entsprechend jünger.

Also insofern passen diese Zahlen zueinander.

So in that respect, these numbers correspond to each other.

Insgesamt habe ich Seitenabrufe über alle drei Blogs über knapp eine Million,

Tatsächlich traue ich selber den Zahlen nicht so genau.

Insofern schaue ich mir aber an, wie die Entwicklung war.

In this respect, I am looking at how the development has been.

Und die geht entsprechend hoch.

Und ich kann auch die Ausschläge sehen bei Themen, die die Menschen sehr bewegen.

Also Beispiel am Wochenende, am Samstag, wollte ich zum AWO-Ortsverein Arbeiterwohlfahrt,

Ich kam rein.

Vom Vorsitzenden der AWO.

From the chairman of the AWO.

Mit welcher Begründung?

On what grounds?

Ich sei nicht eingeladen und er will nicht, dass ich darüber berichte.

I am not invited and he doesn't want me to report on it.

Der Mann am Morgen saß am Tisch.

The man sat at the table in the morning.

Erst sagte er, es sei eine interne Veranstaltung.

First he said it was an internal event.

Und dann, ich sei nicht eingeladen worden.

And then, I was not invited.

Und was ist da passiert?

And what happened there?

Dann bin ich in mein Büro gefahren, habe mich an den PC gesetzt.

Then I drove to my office and sat down at the computer.

Um 14.30 Uhr war ich dort.

I was there at 2:30 PM.

Und um 15.04 Uhr habe ich, glaube ich, einen Kommentar, während die Veranstaltung noch lief, ins Netz gestellt.

And at 3:04 PM, I think I posted a comment online while the event was still ongoing.

Der hat innerhalb von wenigen Tagen an die 60 Kommentare erhalten.

He received about 60 comments within a few days.

Es gab dann ein anonymes Rundschreiben, einen Boykottaufruf gegen die AWO.

There was then an anonymous circular, a call for a boycott against the AWO.

Das hat geknallt, da ging es rund im Ort.

There was a bang, and things got wild in the village.

Und wie hat die AWO reagiert?

And how did the AWO respond?

Gar nicht.

Not at all.

Bis heute nicht?

Not yet to this day?

Doch, sie haben eine E-Mail geschrieben an den Absender dieses anonymen Boykottaufrufs.

Yes, they wrote an email to the sender of this anonymous call for a boycott.

Der awo-boykott-at-yahoo.de oder so war die E-Mail-Adresse.

The email address was awo-boykott-at-yahoo.de or something like that.

Also irgendwas Anonymes.

So something anonymous.

Und darin stand, dass man das nicht begründen müsse.

And it stated that one did not have to justify it.

Dass man eine solide Berichterstattung erwartet hat.

That a solid reporting was expected.

Und deswegen der Mann immer morgen willkommen war.

And that's why the man was always welcome in the morning.

Und das hätte sein Blog nicht.

And that wouldn't have been his blog.

Und da denke ich mir, gut, ist in Ordnung.

And then I think to myself, well, that's alright.

Was sind denn das für Themen? Was berichten Sie dazu?

What topics are those? What do you report on them?

Ganz klassischen Lokaljournalismus.

Completely classic local journalism.

Also wie gesagt, diese AWO-Veranstaltungen, alle möglichen Vereinsberichterstattungen,

So, as I said, these AWO events, all kinds of club reports,

feste Straßenschäden nach dem Winter im Ort.

Permanent road damage after winter in the area.

Jetzt diesen Schildbürgerstreich mit der Straßenbeschilderung.

Now this Schildbürgerstreich with the street signage.

Da müssen Schilder ausgetauscht werden.

Signs need to be replaced.

Kostet das die Kommunen?

Does that cost the municipalities?

Kostet das die Kommunen was?

Does that cost the municipalities anything?

Dann natürlich die Gemeinderatssitzung.

Then of course the municipal council meeting.

Die habe ich am Anfang selber bestritten.

I initially denied that myself.

Habe mittlerweile aber einen Mitarbeiter, der das macht,

I now have an employee who does that.

weil ich in Heddesheim in einer etwas kuriosen Situation bin.

because I am in a rather curious situation in Heddesheim.

Da sitze ich nämlich auch im Gemeinderat drin.

I am also sitting in the municipal council.

Ich weiß nicht, ob Ihnen das bekannt ist.

I don't know if you are familiar with that.

Ne, das wüsste ich nicht.

No, I wouldn't know that.

Also ich wurde von meinen damaligen Schwiegereltern,

So I was influenced by my then in-laws,

noch nicht Schwiegereltern, in der Zwischenzeit habe ich geheiratet,

not yet parents-in-law, in the meantime I have gotten married,

gefragt, ob ich mich dafür engagieren könnte.

asked if I could get involved in it.

Ich war auf der Liste der FDP.

I was on the list of the FDP.

Und ich habe gesagt, ja, aber nur, wenn ich kein FDP-Mitglied werden muss.

And I said, yes, but only if I don't have to become a member of the FDP.

Ich sehe für mich als freien Journalisten keine Parteizugehörigkeit.

I see no party affiliation for myself as a freelance journalist.

Dann lief das seinen Lauf.

Then it took its course.

Ich wurde aufgestellt auf Platz 11 von 22 möglichen Gemeinderäten.

I was placed in 11th position out of 22 possible councilors.

Drei waren im Gemeinderat drin.

Three were in the municipal council.

Und wenn man sich die Rahmendaten anschaut,

And when you look at the framework data,

fünf Jahre lebe ich in dem Ort.

I have been living in the town for five years.

Ich bin in keinem Verein, ich bin in keiner Partei.

I am in no club, I am in no party.

Ich habe mein Büro in Mannheim.

I have my office in Mannheim.

Lebe nur dort und wusste, wo das Rathaus war.

I only lived there and knew where the town hall was.

Unter Supermarkt, unter Badesee und sonst nicht sehr viel über diesen Ort

Under supermarket, under swimming lake and not much else about this place.

hätte ich mit 100 Stimmen schon einen Erfolg gefeiert.

I would have already celebrated a success with 100 votes.

Mit 200 wäre es ein Sensationserfolg gewesen.

With 200, it would have been a sensational success.

Und sechs Wochen vor der Wahl begann das Block.

And six weeks before the election, the block began.

Die Wahl war am 6. oder 7. Juni, weiß ich jetzt nicht mehr genau.

The election was on June 6th or 7th, I can't remember exactly now.

Ich habe dann mit 1500 Stimmen die Liste gewonnen.

I then won the list with 1500 votes.

20 Prozent mehr als der FDP-Fraktionsvorsitzende.

20 percent more than the chairman of the FDP parliamentary group.

Die nachfolgenden Fraktionsgespräche waren beide sehr kurz.

The subsequent faction talks were both very short.

Zwei Stück gab es.

There were two pieces.

Danach habe ich den Bürgermeister informiert.

After that, I informed the mayor.

Dass ich ein freies Mandat wahrnehme.

That I am exercising a free mandate.

Und bin jetzt der einzige, ich glaube sogar in der weiteren Region,

And I am now the only one, I believe even in the wider region,

freie Mandatsträger in einem Gemeinderat.

independent representatives in a municipal council.

Mir wurde vorgeworfen, dass ich beides nicht zusammen machen könne.

I was accused of not being able to do both together.

Gemeinderat sein und als Journalist arbeiten.

Serve as a municipal councilor and work as a journalist.

Das hängt von der eigenen Souveränität ab, denke ich.

That depends on one's own sovereignty, I think.

Ich glaube, dass in der Kommunalpolitik die Parteizugehörigkeit,

I believe that in local politics, party affiliation,

deswegen habe ich auch erst zugestimmt.

That's why I agreed only then.

Wenn ich das Gefühl gehabt hätte, das wäre von Anfang an für mich so ein Parteiapparat,

If I had felt that this was such a party apparatus for me from the very beginning,

in den ich da reinkomme, dann hätte ich gesagt, nein, das mache ich nicht.

If I were to get into that, I would have said no, I'm not doing that.

Ich dachte wirklich, der Gemeinderat ist Bürger, engagiert, ehrenamtlich,

I really thought the municipal council consists of citizens, engaged, voluntary.

der sich für seine Gemeinde und die Belange der Bürgerinnen und Bürger dort einsetzt.

who is committed to his community and the concerns of the citizens there.

Und das tue ich bis heute auch.

And I still do that today.

Und fühle mich auch in dieser Rolle als Unabhängiger ganz gut.

And I also feel quite good in this role as an independent.

Jetzt sind das ja so Themen, bei denen sich bei vielen so bundespolitischen Journalisten die Fußnägel hochrollen.

Now these are topics that make many federal political journalists' toenails curl.

Nach dem Motto, das würden die nie machen.

In the spirit of "they would never do that."

Und in Gemeinderat setzen und zur AWO-Verhandlung gehen.

And sit in the municipal council and go to the AWO negotiation.

Oder zu irgendwelchen Kaninchenzüchtervereinen.

Or to any rabbit breeder associations.

Was macht Ihnen so einen Spaß daran?

What do you enjoy about it so much?

Warum reizt Sie das so? Warum machen Sie das?

Why does it intrigue you so much? Why do you do it?

Weil es die Menschen direkt betrifft.

Because it directly affects people.

Ich kenne natürlich die ganzen bundespolitischen Themen.

Of course, I am aware of all the federal political issues.

Ich komme ja aus diesem Bereich.

I come from this field.

Da sind Sie auf irgendwelchen großen Pressekonferenzen.

There you are at some big press conferences.

Danach gibt es die Schnittchen.

After that, there are the sandwiches.
