Gott bewegt den Willen. Aber das geschieht nicht, wie jahrhundertelang gelehrt und geglaubt worden ist, so, dass es dann in unserer Entscheidung stünde, dieser Bewegung gehorsam oder auch Widerstand zu leisten, sondern er bewegt ihn so kräftig, dass er folgen muss.

God moves the will. But this does not happen, as has been taught and believed for centuries, in such a way that it would then be up to us to obey this movement or to resist it; rather, He moves it so powerfully that it must follow.

Wenn also Chrysostomus immerzu wiederholt, Gott sieht nur den, der da will, so muss das abgelehnt werden. Denn er gibt damit zu verstehen, Gott strecke uns bloß die Hand entgegen und warte dann ab, ob es uns gefalle, uns von ihm helfen zu lassen.

If Chrysostomus repeatedly says, God only sees those who want it, then this must be rejected. For he thereby implies that God merely extends his hand towards us and then waits to see if we are pleased to let ourselves be helped by him.

Wir geben zu, dass wohl der noch nicht gefallene Mensch in der Lage war, das eine oder das andere zu wählen. Aber der hat doch gerade durch sein Beispiel gezeigt, wie jämmerlich es um den freien Willen bestellt ist,

We admit that the yet-unfallen human was capable of choosing one thing or another. But he has precisely shown through his example how pitiful the state of free will is.

Wenn Gott nicht in uns will und vermag, was sollte da aus uns werden, wenn Gott uns auf jene Weise seine Gnade zuwendete? Ja, wir verdunkeln und verkleinern sie durch unsere Undankbarkeit. Denn der Apostel lehrt ja nicht, die Gnade des guten Willens werde uns dargeboten, wenn wir sie annehmen, sondern, er bringe in uns das Wollen hervor. Und das heißt doch nichts anderes, als dass der Herr durch seinen Geist unser Herz lenkt, leitet und regiert und in ihm als in seinem Besitztum sein Regiment führt.

If God does not want and is able to work within us, what would become of us if God were to bestow His grace upon us in that way? Indeed, we obscure and diminish it through our ingratitude. For the Apostle does not teach that the grace of good will is offered to us when we accept it, but rather that He brings forth the will within us. And that means nothing other than that the Lord governs, guides, and rules our hearts through His Spirit, and conducts His reign in them as in His possession.

Auch lautet die Verheißung bei Zechiel nicht bloß so, Gott werde seinen Auserwählten den neuen Geist dazu geben, dass sie in seinen Geboten wandeln könnten, sondern dass sie tatsächlich darin wandelten.

The promise in Ezekiel is not merely that God will give His chosen ones a new spirit so that they may walk in His commandments, but that they will actually walk in them.

Zechiel 11, Verse 19 und folgende und Kapitel 36, Vers 27. Und Jesu Wort? Wer es höret von meinem Vater, der kommt zu mir? Johannes Evangelium 6, Vers 45, kann doch auch nur so verstanden werden.

Dass er damit die durch sich selbst wirksame Gnade lehrt, wie auch Augustin behauptet, von der Prädestination. Diese Gnade erzeugt der Herr nicht allen miteinander auf gleiche Weise, so wie der allgemein verbreitete Ausspruch des Orkam, wenn ich mich recht erinnere, meint, sie werde keinem versagt, der tue, was er könne.

That he thereby teaches the grace that operates through itself, as Augustine also claims, concerning predestination. The Lord does not bestow this grace upon all in the same way; as the widely spread saying of Orkam suggests, if I remember correctly, it is not denied to anyone who does what they can.

Gewiss sollen die Menschen gelehrt werden, dass Gottes Güte allen dargeboten ist, die nach ihr verlangen, ohne Ausnahme. Aber es fängt ja doch nur da an.

Surely, people should be taught that God's goodness is offered to everyone who seeks it, without exception. But it really only starts there.

Ihr zu verlangen, an dem die Gnade, die himmlische Gnade, wirksam geworden ist, und so kann auch dies Stück von ihrem Ruhm nicht abgebrochen werden.

To demand from her, by which the grace, the heavenly grace, has become effective, and thus this piece of her glory cannot be taken away.

Das ist für wahr der Vorzug der Erwählten, dass sie, durch Gottes Geist wiedergeboren, nun auch durch seine Führung geleitet und regiert werden.

This is indeed the advantage of the chosen, that they, reborn by God's Spirit, are now also guided and ruled by His leadership.

So hat auch Augustin recht, wenn er die verlacht, die sich irgendeinen Anteil am Wollen selber anmaßen, und auch, wenn er anderen widersteht, die da meinen, dass, was doch das besondere Zeug

Augustine is right when he ridicules those who presume to have any share in the will themselves, and also when he opposes others who believe that what is indeed the special essence.

der Gnädigen Erwählung ist, werde unterschiedslos allen zuteil.

The gracious election is imparted indiscriminately to all.

Was uns allen gemeinsam ist, das ist die Natur, nicht aber die Gnade, sagt er, und er nennt es einen nichtigen Schema, der nur durch seine Eitelkeit einen Schein gibt, wenn man allgemein auf alle ausdehnt, was Gott doch gibt, wem er will, Predigt 26, oder er sagt auch, wie bist du hierher gekommen?

What we all have in common is nature, but not grace, he says, and he calls it a futile scheme that only gives the appearance through its vanity when one generally extends what God gives to whom He wills, sermon 26, or he also says, how did you come here?
