Was versteckt sich denn hinter dem Begriff Green IT? Grüne Computer werden es ja wohl nicht sein, oder?

What is hidden behind the term Green IT? It can't just be green computers, can it?

Nein, also Green IT bedeutet übersetzt so in etwa grüne Informationstechnologie.

No, so Green IT translates roughly to green information technology.

Und das bezeichnet den Versuch, IT und dazu gehört eben auch Webhosting, möglichst umweltverträglich und ressourcenschonend zu gestalten.

And this denotes the attempt to make IT, which also includes web hosting, as environmentally friendly and resource-efficient as possible.

Green IT umfasst dabei eigentlich ein sehr weites Spektrum, was bis zur Entsorgung von Altgeräten reicht.

Allerdings hat sich in der letzten Zeit im Webhosting-Bereich im Zusammenhang mit,

Green IT und Stromversorgung ist ja bestimmt Ökostrom.

Viele Firmen brüsten sich damit, dass sie Ökostrom beziehen.

Aber Ökostrom ist ja nicht gleich Ökostrom.

But green electricity is not the same as green electricity.

Man kann ja nicht sicher gehen, dass es wirklich ökologischer Strom ist, weil der ist ja nicht grün, den man aus der Steckdose kriegt.

One cannot be sure that it is really ecological electricity, because the one you get from the socket is not green.

Ist das denn wirklich alles so einfach mit dem Ökostrom oder gibt es denn da doch größere Probleme?

Is it really that simple with green electricity, or are there larger problems after all?

Viele denken, dass wenn man Ökostrom bezieht, dass dann tatsächlich auch grüner,

Many think that when one uses green electricity, it is actually greener.

Ökostrom aus der Steckdose kommt, die zu einem gehört, beziehungsweise in diesem Fall zu einem Rechenzentrum.

Green electricity comes from the socket, which belongs to a data center in this case.

So einfach ist es aber leider nicht.

But unfortunately, it’s not that simple.

Zwar kaufen und bezahlen die Webhoster, die mit Ökostrom hosten, diese Menge auch tatsächlich bei einem Hersteller.

Indeed, the web hosts that use green electricity actually purchase this amount from a manufacturer.

Aber einen direkten Zugriff darauf, wie zum Beispiel bei einer Tankstelle, ist gar nicht möglich.

But direct access to it, like at a gas station, is not possible at all.

Das heißt, es ist physikalisch nicht möglich, Strom nach der Art seiner Erzeugung zu trennen.

That means it is not physically possible to separate electricity based on its method of generation.

Und deshalb ist im Stromnetz auch immer ein Mix aus Atomkohle und Ökostrom.

And that is why the power grid always consists of a mix of nuclear, coal, and renewable energy.

Und genau dieser fließt auch aus den Steckdosen der grünen Rechenzentren.

And precisely this flows from the sockets of the green data centers.

Also eben leider kein grüner Strom in Rheinland-Pfalz.

Unfortunately, there is no green electricity in Rhineland-Palatinate.

Trotzdem steigt doch aber der Anteil an Ökostrom, je mehr Firmen diesen beziehen, oder?

Nevertheless, the share of green electricity is increasing as more companies purchase it, right?

Bisher hat der Kauf und die Nutzung von Ökostrom noch keinen nennenswerten Einfluss auf die Art der Stromerzeugung im Gesamtmarkt.

So far, the purchase and use of green electricity have had no significant impact on the method of electricity generation in the overall market.

Die Betreiber von Windwasser- und Solaranlagen produzieren ihren Ökostrom

The operators of wind, water, and solar systems produce their green electricity.

und verkaufen ihn entweder direkt an Abnehmer wie Hosting-Unternehmen

and sell it either directly to consumers such as hosting companies

oder sie speisen ihn gegen Entgelt der Netzbetreiber.

or they feed it in for a fee from the network operator.

Sollte die direkte Nachfrage nach grünem Strom jetzt tatsächlich mehr sein als die verfügbare Gesamtmenge,

If the direct demand for green electricity is actually more than the total available amount now,

dann müssten zunächst einmal neue Produktionsanlagen für Ökostrom gebaut werden, zum Beispiel Wasserkraftanlagen.

Then, new production facilities for green electricity would first need to be built, for example, hydropower plants.

Tatsächlich ist aber der Anteil von Wasser-, Wind- und Solaranergie am gesamten Primärenergieverbrauch seit 2003 nur um 0,5 Prozent gestiegen.

In fact, the share of water, wind, and solar energy in total primary energy consumption has only increased by 0.5 percent since 2003.

Und was heißt das jetzt konkret?

And what does that mean concretely now?

Das bedeutet eben, dass ein mit Ökostrom betriebener Webserver zurzeit leider keine direkte positive Wirkung auf den Strom hat.

This means that a web server powered by green electricity currently does not have a direct positive effect on the electricity.

Das hat einfach was damit zu tun, dass aktiver Klimastrom eben nicht nur eine Frage des Womit ist, sondern vor allen Dingen des Wieviel.

It simply has to do with the fact that active climate action is not just a matter of what to use, but above all a matter of how much.

Denn auch umweltfreundliche Ressourcen, dazu gehört nicht nur Ökostrom, sondern zum Beispiel auch sowas wie Biodiesel, sind begrenzt.

Because environmentally friendly resources, which include not only green electricity but also things like biodiesel, are limited.

Und was der Umwelt heute wirklich was bringt, ist, wenn man diese Energie in Form von Strom oder Kraftstoff einspart.

And what really helps the environment today is saving this energy in the form of electricity or fuel.

Das bedeutet also eine größtmögliche Energieeffizienz.

Und insgesamt laufen in Deutschland mehrere 10.000 dedizierte Server so rund um die Uhr in den Rechenzentren der großen Webhoster.

And in total, several tens of thousands of dedicated servers operate 24/7 in the data centers of the major web hosts in Germany.

Und viele, wenn nicht sogar die meisten davon, werden gar nicht wirklich benötigt.

And many, if not most of them, are not really needed at all.

OneBlue hat deswegen von Beginn an einen Schwerpunkt auf das Thema Virtualisierung gesetzt.

Und viel Energie in die Entwicklung und Vermarktung von virtuellen Servern.

Bei einem virtuellen Server ist es so, dass sich da mehrere Kunden eine Hardware, also einen Rechner, teilen.

Der Vorteil, ein virtueller Server verbraucht nur einen Bruchteil des Stroms eines dedizierten Servers.

Und wenn ich das mal kurz an einem Beispiel verdeutlichen darf,

Das klingt ja nach einer ganz schönen Menge Einsparungspotenzial.
