Also, irgendwie hat sich da im Laufe der letzten vier bis fünf Jahrzehnte einiges angesammelt.
Well, somehow a lot has accumulated there over the course of the last four to five decades.

Es fängt ja alles erst so in den 80ern an.

Was hast du denn davor eigentlich gemacht?

In den 80ern ging dieses mit der Musik natürlich erst los.
In the 80s, this all started with the music, of course.
Vorher habe ich ja ganz normal in Bahntruppen.
Before, I was working normally in train crews.
Mein Abitur gemacht.
I completed my high school diploma.
Und dann habe ich halt eine einjährige höhere Handelsschule für Abiturienten gemacht.
And then I attended a one-year higher business school for graduates.
Dann habe ich eine Industriekaufmannslehre hinter mich gebracht.
Then I completed an apprenticeship as an industrial clerk.
Habe dann ein halbes Jahr in diesem Betrieb noch gearbeitet.
I then worked in this company for another six months.
Und dann war meine, ich habe eine Mutterschaftsvertretung machen dürfen.
And then I was allowed to do a maternity leave cover.
Und das war dann halt vorbei.
And that was just over.
Und das war dann irgendwie in 1985, Mitte 1985.
And that was somehow in 1985, mid-1985.
Und dann war ich ein paar Monate halt arbeitslos gemeldet.
And then I was registered as unemployed for a few months.
Und habe dann entschieden, ab 1.1.86.
And then decided, starting from January 1, 1986.
mich selbstständig zu melden.
to register myself as self-employed.
Als Musiker in Absprache mit dem Arbeitsamtskollegen.
As a musician in consultation with the employment office colleague.
Ja gut, und seitdem bist du da auf vielen Ebenen aktiv.

Du schreibst Bücher oder hast Bücher geschrieben.

Schreibst du eigentlich noch?

Aktuell ist das mit den Büchern halt nicht mehr so, was soll ich sagen, populär.

Also ich habe die ganze Bandbreite, über einen Zeitraum von zehn Jahren

habe ich ja acht oder neun Bücher geschrieben für die Mundharmonika.

Jetzt nicht irgendwelche Krimiromanen oder so.
Not any crime novels or anything like that right now.
Und ich habe Lehrbücher geschrieben für die Mundharmonika, für die Blues.
And I have written textbooks for the harmonica, for the blues.
Habe speziell Anfängerbücher bis zu Fortgeschritten, Stufe 2 halt eben.
I have beginner books up to advanced, level 2, just so you know.
Und da ist vom Verlag her nicht mehr so das Interesse gewesen an noch weiterführender Literatur,
And there hasn't been much interest from the publisher in further literature.
weil sich das eben auch schlechter verkaufen lässt, schlechter vermarkten lässt einfach.
because it is simply harder to sell, harder to market.
Also du bist auf jeden Fall ein Bluesmensch.
So you are definitely a blues person.
Das müssen wir den Leuten, die dich noch nicht kennen, schon mal erklären.

Das ist nicht so einfach.

Wollte ich sagen, die Eltern, der Vater, der auch gesungen hat, der irgendwie...

Also eine musikalische Familie auch.
So a musical family as well.
War das nicht unbedingt.
That wasn't necessarily the case.
Wir haben jetzt nicht wirklich so Hausmusik gemacht.
We haven't really played house music now.
Hausmusik war einfach nur zu Weihnachten, wo wir alle gesungen haben.
House music was just at Christmas when we all sang.
Das war halt so.
It was just like that.
Ansonsten habe ich mir da wohl scheinbar meine Nischen mehr oder weniger selber gesucht
Otherwise, it seems that I have more or less found my niches by myself.
und dann vielleicht auch gefunden durch irgendwie Radio, Rundfunk, ja Radio halt.
and then maybe also found through somehow radio, broadcasting, well, radio.
Und dann die ersten Schallplattenkäufe und das war jetzt halt die Elvis-Platte,
And then the first record purchases, and now it was the Elvis record.
A Portrait in Music, die mir meine Großeltern dann irgendwann mal zum Geburtstag geschenkt haben.

Und das war einfach der Türöffner, weil da war alles drauf.
And that was simply the key to the door, because it had everything on it.
Da war Rock'n'Roll drauf, da waren seine Balladen drauf.
There was rock 'n' roll on it, there were his ballads on it.
Und da konnte ich mir dann halt das, was mir am besten gefiel, runterpicken und sagen,
And then I could just pick what I liked best and say,
okay, da möchtest du mal gerne.

Und da war ich zwölf oder dreizehn. Wie alt ist man dann?

Hast du vielleicht auch so als kleiner Dötz irgendwie vor dem Plattenschrank der Eltern gesessen

Ja, ich war's.

Ja, das war wirklich so.

Da hattest du eben dieses, wie soll man sagen, diese Kommode mit dem Radio oben drauf,
So you had this, how should one put it, this dresser with the radio on top of it,
der Schallplattenspieler unten drunter.

Genau, ja, ja.

Und diese Sammlung von, ich weiß nicht, da würden wir drüber lächeln, wenn man sagt Sammlung.
And this collection of, I don't know, we would smile about that if someone said collection.
Da waren dann irgendwie 30, 35 Single-Schallplatten.
There were somehow 30, 35 single records.
Mehr hatte man damals nicht.
That was all one had back then.
Das reichte irgendwie auch für Musik scheinbar.
That seemed to be enough for music too.
Sonst, der Rest kam übers Radio.
Otherwise, the rest came over the radio.
Und da habe ich dann auch, ja klar, habe ich dann geguckt mit dem Plattenspieler.
And there I also, yes of course, checked with the record player.
Und ich weiß noch, ich kann mich noch erinnern an die Momente,
And I still remember those moments,
da haben wir, glaube ich, noch in Badrup gewohnt, also im Wohnzimmer der Großeltern,
I think we were still living in Badrup then, in the living room of the grandparents.
wo dann auch in deren Radio auf der Straße nach Mendozino oder irgend so etwas lief.

Und der Dieter hat dann versucht, diese Texte da mitzuschreiben.
And Dieter then tried to write down these texts.
Also das sind dann so Bilder, die einem dann wieder, wenn du solche Fragen stellst,

Wie kommt man dann dazu, zur Musik überhaupt?
How does one then come to music at all?
Also scheinbar ist es schon immer so gewesen, dass mich Musik jeder Art irgendwie immer fasziniert hat.
It seems that it has always been the case that music of any kind has somehow fascinated me.
Aber die Eltern haben ja schon einen Einfluss.
But the parents already have an influence.
Also bei mir war es mein Vater, der mir im Auto über seine Kassetten,
Well, for me it was my father who introduced me to his cassettes in the car.
selbst, der hatte ein Autoradio, mit dem man Kassetten aufnehmen konnte.
He himself had a car radio that could record cassettes.
Also das war so 73, 74 rum, so ein Blaupunkt.
So that was around 73, 74, a Blaupunkt.
Dann hat er Kassetten aufgenommen, die habe ich noch, die funktionieren sogar.
Then he recorded cassettes, which I still have, and they even work.
Und da war alles drauf von, weiß ich nicht, Deep Purple bis Rock'n'Roll natürlich,
And it had everything on it, I don't know, from Deep Purple to rock 'n' roll, of course,
auch ganz viel, da war ich ein ganz großer Fan von.
also a lot, I was a really big fan of that.
Und meine Mutter hatte ein Thomann-Gerät.
And my mother had a Thomann device.
Und die hat dann so alles das aufgenommen, was mein Vater nicht aufgenommen hatte.
And that one captured everything my father hadn't recorded.
So Schlager, James Last und solche Sachen.
So, Schlager, James Last, and such things.
Und so habe ich halt beide Seiten irgendwie kennengelernt.
And so I kind of got to know both sides.
Und so Ende der 70er kam dann so der Musikgeschmack,
And so at the end of the 70s, the musical taste came.
so mit Secret Service und was weiß ich, Disco-Geschichten und so.
so with Secret Service and what do I know, disco stories and so on.
Ja, so wo man unterwegs war.
Yes, just where one was on the way.
Wo man halt unterwegs war.
Wherever one was on the way.
Und Barclay James Harvest war so die erste Lieblingsgruppe.
And Barclay James Harvest was like the first favorite band.
Ja, schlimme Sachen.
Yes, terrible things.
Damals schlimme Sachen sind passiert.
Back then, terrible things happened.
Ja, obwohl die Spätwerke von denen fand ich gut.
Yes, although I found the late works of those good.
Aber da können wir ja gleich die Brücke schlagen.

Du hast ja, ich meine, du machst heute Platten und Bücher und Workshops,
You have, I mean, you are doing records and books and workshops today,
haben wir ja schon festgehalten.

Aber du hast ja zwischenzeitlich in den 90ern auch einen Ausflug zum Radio gemacht.
But you also took a trip to radio in the meantime in the 90s.
Du warst bei Radio Bremen.
You were at Radio Bremen.
Als Freier.
As a suitor.
Ich war ja nicht festangestellt.
I was not permanently employed.
Ich bin freier Mitarbeiter da gewesen über immerhin zwölf Jahre lang.
I have been a freelance employee for at least twelve years.
Das habe ich seit 1990.
I have had that since 1990.
Ja, genau.
Yes, exactly.
1990 oder 89, ich weiß nicht mehr genau.
1990 or 89, I can't remember exactly.
Da habe ich meine erste Probesendung da gemacht und das war scheinbar okay.
That’s where I did my first trial broadcast and it apparently went okay.
Und dann habe ich halt eben das weitermachen dürfen.
And then I was allowed to just continue.
Was hast du da gemacht?

Eine Blues-Sendung habe ich moderiert.
I hosted a blues show.
Also schon spezielle Rahmen, spezielle Nischen-Sendung.
So, already special frames, special niche broadcast.
Und die Sendung, in der es lief, hieß damals Square, Music Square.
And the show it aired on was called Square, Music Square.
Und das hatte eben verschiedene Aspekte.
And that had various aspects.
Weltmusik und was weiß ich, Ethno, keine Ahnung.
World music and what do I know, ethno, no idea.
Und irgendwo ein Abend war dann eben auch Blues.
And somewhere one evening was also blues.
Und da haben wir uns mit drei, vier freien Mitarbeitern,
And there we were with three or four freelance employees,
diese Sendung halt eben mehr oder weniger aufgeteilt.
This program is basically divided more or less.
Also jede Woche eine andere.
So every week a different one.
So hatten Musiksendungen ja damals auch noch persönliche Geschmäcker des Moderators,
Back then, music shows also reflected the personal tastes of the host.
die da einfach mit einflossen.

Und da konnte man sich dann halt eben auch darauf einrichten.
And then you could also adapt to that.
So habe ich das ja vorher auch gemacht,

wenn ich meine WDR-Blues-Sendungen gehört habe mit Klaus Kunk oder Hans W. Evert
when I listened to my WDR blues shows with Klaus Kunk or Hans W. Evert
oder wie sie alle geheißen haben.

Da fand man den einen Moderator halt irgendwie ein bisschen cooler als den anderen.
There you found one host a bit cooler than the other.
Und der hat vielleicht, wie auch immer.
And maybe he has, no matter how.
Und so war das eben dann bei Radio Bremen auch.
And so it was the same at Radio Bremen as well.
Es war aber doch ein Nischenprogramm, oder?
But it was still a niche program, right?
Definitiv, ja klar.

Das ist aber das, was Radio Bremen damals noch leisten konnte

und relativ lange angeboten hat.

Aber es wurde dann immer andere Plätze gesucht für die Sendung.

Und das war meistens spät.

Und da läuft dann sonst außer dir selber keiner mehr durchs Rundfunkgebäude.
And then no one else walks through the broadcasting building except for yourself.
Hast du die Sendung vorproduziert oder da direkt im Studio live gefahren?

Nee, der Anspruch war, das live zu machen.

Außer man durfte auch manchmal Ersatzsendungen produzieren.

Das war dann eine Vorproduktion,
