Greta Guntern, ihr seid als junge Mädchen im Mädchenpensionar in Freiburg gewesen.

Greta Guntern, you were at the girls' boarding school in Freiburg as young girls.

So hat eigentlich ein wenig die Zeit, als ihr 15 Jahre alt war, angefangen.

So it actually started a little back when you were 15 years old.

Und wenn man ein bisschen den Lebenslauf liest, sieht man, das ist nicht gerade so eine positive Erinnerung.

And if you read a little of the resume, you can see that it is not exactly a positive memory.

Darf man so sagen?

Ja, das kann man sagen. Das waren eigentlich drei verlorene Jahre, meiner Meinung nach.

Also mir war gar nicht wohl bei den Nonnen und bei den anderen Schülerinnen und so weiter.

Und eingeschlossen und mit Uniform und so weiter.

And enclosed and in uniform and so on.

Das ist eine ganz blöde...

That is a really stupid...

...sture Idee von mir in der Pubertät.

Ich habe das bei den Eltern einfach durchgepresst, sozusagen.

I just pushed that through with the parents, so to speak.

Sie wollten mich gar nicht gehen lassen.

They didn't want to let me go at all.

Sie waren nicht einig.

They were not in agreement.

Und ich habe gefunden, da will ich jetzt gehen.

And I have found, I want to go there now.

Okay.

Okay.

Aber wie seid ihr da auf die Idee gekommen, in ein Internat zu gehen oder ein Pensionat?

But how did you come up with the idea of going to a boarding school or a boarding house?

Das ist ja für viele die Horrorvorstellung.

That's the horror scenario for many.

Wie habt ihr das selber gewollt?

How did you want it yourselves?

Ja, da ist eine Mitschülerin damals gesagt, sie gehe jetzt ins Internat auf Freiburg.

Yes, a classmate said back then that she was going to boarding school in Freiburg.

Und da habe ich gefunden, das ist eigentlich noch eine gute Idee, da will ich auch.

And there I found that this is actually still a good idea, I want that too.

So ist es gekommen.

So it has come to this.

Und das ist die Idee?

Ja, ja, das ist alles.

Nachher habt ihr die drei Jahre durchgezogen, also ihr habt die Zeit durchgezogen, durchgestirrt.

Wie ist es dann nachher weitergegangen?

Nach der Zeit, als ihr fertig wart, war es ein bisschen etwas da, wie ich das gelesen habe.

Nein, das habe ich wirklich nicht gewusst.

Ich kann gut Französisch kennen.

Ich habe das Diplom, das Handelsdiplom.

I have the diploma, the commercial diploma.

Ich habe Französisch im Sack.

I have French in the bag.

Das war eigentlich nicht schlecht.

Wenigstens das und durchgegeben habe ich auch.

Das war auch nicht schlecht, weil der Stolz hat es mir einfach nicht zulassen, jetzt nicht mehr aufzuhören zwischendurch.

That wasn't too bad either, because my pride simply wouldn't allow me to stop in between now.

Dann bin ich dann, was ist dann nachher gekommen?

Then I am then, what came afterwards?

Das erste Mal.

The first time.

Dann bin ich auf, ja, dann habe ich gefunden, jetzt will ich auf Paris.

Then I am up, yes, then I found, now I want to go to Paris.

Ich habe wieder von einer Gruppe gehört, im Glanland, die gehen auf Paris.

I heard again about a group in Glanland that is going to Paris.

Da habe ich gesagt, ja.

Then I said, yes.

Da will ich mit.

I want to join.

Und das habe ich wieder durchgepresst daheim.

And I pushed that through again at home.

Mein Vater hat alle Koffer verborgen und so weiter.

My father hid all the suitcases and so on.

Und hat gefunden, das sei eine Schnapsidee, warum soll ich auf Paris?

And has found that it's a crazy idea, why should I go to Paris?

Und dann bin ich aber ab.

And then I'm off.

Mit 200 Franken in der Tasche.

With 200 francs in my pocket.

Und habe gewusst, ich gehe zuerst in ein Jugendherbergen und von da aus suche ich einen Au-pair-Job.

And I knew I would first go to a youth hostel and from there I would look for an au pair job.

Und habe genau zwei Wochen Geld.

And I have exactly two weeks' worth of money.

Und dann habe ich das gemacht und habe dann auch einen Job gefunden.

And then I did that and also found a job.

Da hat man viele Jobs gefunden, das ist kein Problem, da hat es so Büro gegeben.

There were many jobs found, that's not a problem, there were such offices.

Und bin dann zuerst in einen Haushalt gekommen, eine sehr reiche Frau, eine geschiedene Frau mit einem kleinen Jungen.

And then I first went into a household, a very wealthy woman, a divorced woman with a little boy.

Und ich musste eigentlich den Jungen bedienen.

And I actually had to serve the boy.

Ich war eigentlich seine Bedienerin.

I was actually his servant.

Ich habe eine gewählte Gewandung.

I have an elected garment.

Und dann habe ich nach einer Woche dieser Frau gesagt, das bringe ich nicht über mich.

And then I told this woman after a week, I can't bring myself to do that.

Und ich kann nicht mehr bei ihnen sein.

And I can no longer be with them.

Und dann habe ich eine andere Familie gefunden.

And then I found another family.

Und die hatten sechs Kinder, eine super katholische Familie, aber auch sehr, sehr reich.

And they had six children, a super Catholic family, but also very, very wealthy.

Aber ungeheuer nett.

But immensely nice.

Okay.

Okay.

Und da musste ich nur auf den kleinsten Säugling schauen, dass da jemand da ist.

And all I had to do was look at the smallest infant to see that someone was there.

Und ich hatte dann mit ihnen am Mittag die wunderbarsten Essen jeden Tag mit den Eltern zusammen.

And I had the most wonderful meals every day at lunchtime with them together with the parents.

Also das war sehr, sehr schön.

So that was very, very nice.

Dann habe ich gehört, ich sollte dringend dann und dann in London.

Then I heard I should urgently be in London then and then.

Damit ich noch einen Kurs anfangen kann.

So that I can start another course.

Der fährt jetzt dann an.

He'll be starting soon.

Und habe dann nach drei Monaten der Familie leider gesagt, und das berühre ich heute noch, weil die waren so gut.

And then after three months, I unfortunately told the family, and that still touches me today, because they were so good.

Ich muss leider gehen, weil ich muss in die Schule anfangen, sonst verpasse ich ein ganzes Jahr.

I unfortunately have to go because I need to start school; otherwise, I'll miss an entire year.

Und bin dann hier hingegangen, direkt von Paris aus.

And then I came here directly from Paris.

Und mir hat dann London ungeheuer gefallen, die ganze Mentalität.

And I really liked London, the whole mentality.

Von den Engländern.

By the English.

Eigentlich im Gegensatz zu Frankreich.

Actually, in contrast to France.

Ja.

Yes.

Weil aus dieser Familie waren sie einfach ungeheuer snobistisch.

Because from that family they were simply extremely snobbish.

Ich kannte gut Französisch, aber die haben mich einfach durchkorrigiert.

I knew French well, but they just corrected me.

Etwas falsch gesagt oder so weiter.

Said something wrong or something like that.

Und Englisch kannte ich fast nichts.

And I knew almost nothing of English.

Und die haben gesagt, wunderbar rede ich.

And they said, I speak wonderfully.

Also das war eine ganz andere Mentalität für mich.

So that was a completely different mentality for me.

Ich habe mich dann so ein bisschen durchgeschlagen.

I then managed to get by a bit.

Mal mit Servieren.

Once with serving.

Mal mit einer alten, mit einer alten, invaliden Frau.

Once with an old, disabled woman.

Eine Operenausbilderin.

An opera trainer.

Und okay.

And okay.

Und habe dann gewartet auf eine Stelle, die dann eben zu tun hatte mit der Familie Churchill.

And then I waited for a position that was related to the Churchill family.

Genau.

Exactly.

Winston Churchill kennt man mit dem Begriff.

Winston Churchill is known by this term.

Das war die Schwiegermutter von Randolph Churchill.

That was the mother-in-law of Randolph Churchill.

Und das war eine 80-jährige Frau.

And that was an 80-year-old woman.

Und wunderbar mit der.

And wonderful with that.

Ich war dann ein Jahr lang mit der.

I was with her for a year.

Also kurz, Randolph ist ja der Randolph.

So in short, Randolph is indeed the Randolph.

Oder der Botsch von Winston Churchill.

Or the message from Winston Churchill.

Ja, ganz genau.

Yes, exactly.

Und ihre Tochter war die Frau von dem Botsch.

And her daughter was the wife of the ambassador.

Und das war wieder eine grossartige Frau.

And that was another wonderful woman.

Und die hat mir jeden Tag einfach erzählt, was sie erlebt hat als Kind und so weiter.

And she simply told me every day what she experienced as a child and so on.

Sie war eine Irländerin.

She was an Irishwoman.

Und was sie erlebt hat zusammen mit Churchill.

And what she experienced together with Churchill.

Und sie haben es einander sehr gut verstanden.

And they understood each other very well.

Weil die Frau hat so eine Fantasie gehabt.

Because the woman had such an imagination.

Und sie war lebhaft.

And she was lively.

Sie war eine schöne Frau.

She was a beautiful woman.

Sie war mit 80 und so weiter.

She was 80 and so on.

Also alles in Ordnung.

So everything's fine.

Ja.

Yes.

Und nach diesen drei Jahren, also sie war ja drei Jahre in London.

And after these three years, well, she had been in London for three years.

Und da habt ihr ja, bei der Rückreise in die Schweiz habt ihr ja auch verschiedene Zertifikate gemacht.

Und bei der Rückreise in die Schweiz habt ihr verschiedene Zertifikate von einer University of Cambridge dabei gehabt.

And on the return trip to Switzerland, you had various certificates from a University of Cambridge with you.

Hat das ein gewisses Gefühl von Sicherheit gegeben?

Did that provide a certain sense of security?

Ich weiss nicht.

I don't know.

Für mich war einfach klar, ich bleibe in diesem London, bis ich einfach die Sprache habe.

For me, it was simply clear that I would stay in this London until I had the language.

Das hat mich interessiert.

Ich habe gefunden, endlich muss ich mal etwas richtig kennen.

I have found it; finally, I must really get to know something.

Und das ist alles.

Mir hat das eine gewisse Befriedigung gegeben.

It gave me a certain satisfaction.

Ich habe es gemacht.

I did it.

Und vor allem das letzte Diploma auf English Studies war eine sehr schwierige Sache, die sehr wenige gemacht haben.

And especially the last diploma in English Studies was a very difficult thing that very few people have achieved.

Und es hat mir selber eine gewisse Befriedigung gegeben.

And it has given me a certain satisfaction myself.

Das ist alles.

Aber Cambridge ist ja immerhin ein Begriff.

But Cambridge is at least a term.

Ja, ja, ja.

Und mir hat auch die Ausbildung in London sehr gefallen.

And I also really enjoyed the training in London.

Das ist wieder locker zu und her gekommen.

Das hat mir genau gefallen.

Was hat dich dann wieder in die Schweiz zurückgeholt?

Ich war fertig.

Und habe gefunden, ja, jetzt mal schauen, was ich zurück machen kann.

Einfach eigentlich ohne besonderes Ziel.

Actually quite simple without any particular goal.

Ich bin dann zurückgekommen zu meinen Eltern in den Nevels und habe gefunden, jetzt schaue ich mal, was ich weiter machen kann.

I then returned to my parents in Nevels and found that now I will see what I can do next.

Dann habe ich eine Stelle gesucht.

Then I looked for a job.

Und habe in Burghölzli in Zürich eine gefunden, beim Professor Bleiler, Sekretärin.

Und da war natürlich mein Englisch sehr, sehr willkommen.

And of course, my English was very, very welcome.

Er hat sehr viel geschrieben, Artikel geschrieben, also wissenschaftliche.

He wrote a lot, wrote articles, well, scientific ones.

Er war eigentlich der angesehenste Psychiater weltweit.

He was actually the most respected psychiatrist in the world.

Und dann habe ich zum Teil von ihm Texte bekommen, Englische, wo ich habe mein Abschreiben.

And then I received texts from him, in English, that I copied down.

Ich habe dann dummerweise gemeint, ich sollte die auch korrigieren.

Unfortunately, I then thought I should correct them as well.

Das war so in meinem Kopf.

That was how it was in my head.

Ich habe das korrigiert und dann habe ich ein Problem mit seiner Assistentin bekommen.

I corrected that and then I had a problem with his assistant.

Aber die hat das gar nicht gerne gemacht.

But she didn't like doing that at all.

Okay.

Okay.

Gut, aber das war kein Problem.

Good, but that was no problem.

Auf jeden Fall, das war ja der Psychiatrisch-Uniklinik in Zürich.

In any case, that was the psychiatric university hospital in Zurich.

Ja, genau.

Da habt ihr ja gesagt, ihr habt ja auch mitbekommen, bei den Übersetzungen, die Geschichten.

Und ich habe dann die Protokoll gemacht und das hat mich interessiert, wie das alles geht.

And then I made the minutes, and I was interested in how it all works.

Ich habe dann nachher auch Patienten auf den Abteilungen gesehen, bin mit den Ärzten auf die Abteilungen gegangen,

I then also saw patients in the departments later, went to the departments with the doctors,

wieder, wenn sie die Patienten gesehen haben, wieder ein Protokoll gemacht und so weiter.

Again, when they have seen the patients, they made a protocol again and so on.

Das hat mich interessiert.

That interested me.

Und in diesem Zusammenhang habt ihr ja auch einen Mann kennengelernt, Gottlieb Guntern.

Das hat ja auch einen Lebenslauf relativ stark geprägt, der nachher gekommen ist.

They each wrote and did their things at a U-shaped table.

Und dann hatte ich immer wieder zu tun in diesem Büro.

And then I kept having to work in this office.

Auch wenn eine Schreitmaschine kaputt war, bin ich dann gut repariert und so weiter.

Even if a sewing machine was broken, I was then well repaired and so on.

Mir war das alles recht.

I was fine with all of that.

Und dann habe ich plötzlich einen gesehen.

And then I suddenly saw one.

Ich habe ihn gesehen, einen neuen gesehen.

I saw him, saw a new one.

Die hatten alle weisse Schösser natürlich.

They all had white horses, of course.

Und er hatte ganz schwarze Haare.

And he had completely black hair.

Und er war braun, sehr, sehr sonnengebräunt.

And he was brown, very, very sun-tanned.

Und das ist immer mein Typ gewesen.

And that has always been my type.

Einer mit schwarzen Haaren und einem sportlichen.

One with black hair and an athletic build.

Und mit dieser weissen Schosse.

And with this white shot.

Ich fand, er ist gut.

I thought he was good.

Das war alles.

That was all.

Ich war dann immer sehr zurückhaltend.

I was always very reserved.

Ich habe nie einen Vorbe vernehmen.

I have never heard a pretext.

Und dann hat er mich offenbar auch gesehen.

And then he apparently saw me too.

Und dann war ich einmal draussen im Gang.

And then I was once outside in the hallway.

Und dann kam er zu mir und sagte, ob er mich einmal einteilen darf.

And then he came to me and asked if he could assign me once.

Und dann sagte er, warum nicht.

And then he said, why not.

Ganz cool.

Pretty cool.

So hat es angefangen.

Und ich muss da viel sagen, er war ja sicher eure treibende Kraft, die ihn eigentlich veranlasst hat, dazu den Job aufzuheben und auf die Kunst zu gehen.

And I have to say a lot about that, he was certainly your driving force that actually led him to quit the job and pursue art.

Also, wir haben, ein Jahr sind wir miteinander gegangen, es war eine gute Beziehung, und dann plötzlich ist die Beziehung auseinandergegangen.

So, we were together for a year, it was a good relationship, and then suddenly the relationship fell apart.

Das gibt es eben.

That's just the way it is.

Und dann haben wir einander ein oder zwei Jahre lang nicht mehr gesehen.

And then we didn't see each other for a year or two.

Und beide haben dann wieder ihre Freunde und Freundinnen gehabt.

And both then had their friends and girlfriends again.

Und beide waren überzeugt nach zwei Jahren, sie seien geheiratet.

And both were convinced after two years that they had gotten married.

Und dann sind wir zufällig...

And then we just happened to...

Irgendwie haben wir uns wieder getroffen und dann haben wir gemerkt, dass wir beide noch ledig sind und dass wir beide eigentlich nicht so gute Beziehungen hatten zwischendurch, die uns weniger befriedigend haben als sie.

Somehow we met again and then we realized that we were both still single and that we both actually didn’t have such good relationships in between, which were less satisfying than this one.

Dann sind wir wieder zusammengekommen und haben dann nach ein paar Monaten geheiratet.

Then we got back together and after a few months we got married.

Ja, ich habe wieder... Wie für das Englische habe ich gefunden?

Ich sollte ja etwas rechtes lernen, damit ich ein Papier habe und im Notfall mal zeigen kann.

I should learn something proper so that I have a certificate and can show it in case of an emergency.

Das muss man ja immer wieder mal zeigen, ein Papier, auch wenn das nichts heisst.

You always have to show it again and again, a piece of paper, even if that means nothing.

Ich habe mich vorbereitet auf die Prüfung, auf die Aufnahmeprüfung.

I prepared for the exam, for the entrance exam.

Bin aufgenommen worden und habe dann insistiert, ich wolle in die beste Klasse.

I was accepted and then insisted that I wanted to be in the best class.

Zum besten Lehrer.

To the best teacher.

Und da habe ich Mühe gehabt, reinzukommen, aber ich bin dann reingekommen.

And I had a hard time getting in, but I managed to get in.

Und dann haben wir hier gezeichnet und gemacht und getan.

And then we drew and made and did things here.

Das waren etwa 20, 30 Schüler. Eigentlich alles Bursten, junge Bursten.

There were about 20, 30 students. Actually all brats, young brats.

Und ich war da schon 28, 29.

And I was already 28, 29 then.

Und da war gerade so die Zeit, in der die...

And that was just the time when the...

Das war so die Zeit, in der die revolutionierten.

That was about the time when the revolutionaries rose up.
