Das ist immer das Schlimmste, so über sein neues Album zu sprechen.

That is always the worst, talking about one's new album like that.

Was soll man da sagen?

What can one say about that?

Unser erwachsenstes Album bisher oder unser persönlichstes?

Our most adult album so far or our most personal?

Da rutscht man halt immer leicht ins Klischee.

You easily slip into clichés.

Tatsache ist, dass wir zwei Jahre ungefähr daran gearbeitet haben.

The fact is that we have worked on it for about two years.

Das bedeutet natürlich nicht, dass wir unablässig immer nur im Studio waren.

That certainly doesn't mean that we were tirelessly always only in the studio.

Es gab auch Pausen und Leerzeiten dazwischen.

There were also breaks and gaps in between.

Aber vor gut zwei Jahren haben wir so die ersten Demos gesammelt,

But about two years ago, we started gathering the first demos.

die ersten Stücke gesammelt.

the first pieces collected.

Und wir fanden, das war an der Zeit, dass man das Album ganz klassisch anfängt.

And we thought it was time to start the album in a very classic way.

Also mit einem Intro, wie wir das früher gerne getan haben.

So with an intro, as we used to do it before.

Auf dem Kreuzzug ins Glück hatte er ein sehr gutes Intro.

On the crusade to happiness, he had a very good intro.

Und Learning English hatte eins.

And learning English had one.

Wir haben diesen Spruch einfach rausgenommen aus dem Zitat,

We simply removed this saying from the quote,

das irgendwo in einem Lied auftaucht, was auf der Platte ist.

that appears somewhere in a song that is on the album.

Das mit das Schwierigste an dem Stück war, das Hundegebell aufzunehmen.

The most difficult part of the piece was recording the barking of the dogs.

Das hat unser Produzent Vincent Sorg auf dem Nachbarbauernhof probiert.

Our producer Vincent Sorg tried that on the neighboring farm.

Als er draufgelaufen ist, hat der Hund total gebellt.

When he walked by, the dog barked loudly.

Und als er aufnehmen wollte,

And when he wanted to record,

natürlich überhaupt nicht mehr.

of course not at all anymore.

Also das war tricky, dass man genau den richtigen Bellton hatte nachher.

So that was tricky, that you had to get exactly the right ringtone afterwards.

Außerdem ist er zweimal auf einem anderen Hof gebissen worden,

He has also been bitten twice at another farm,

noch bevor er die Aufnahmeschalte gedrückt hat.

even before he pressed the record button.

Deswegen klingt die Platte vielleicht ein bisschen komisch.

That's why the record might sound a bit strange.

Ballast der Republik ist einfach nur ein Versuch,

ein Lebensgefühl zu beschreiben zurzeit hier in Deutschland.

to describe a sense of life at the moment here in Germany.

Völlig egal, ob du jetzt im Osten groß wirst oder im Westen lebst.

It doesn't matter at all whether you are growing up in the East or living in the West now.

Wir tragen alle so diesen Ballast der Geschichte mit uns rum.

We all carry this burden of history with us.

Also das sind alles sehr viele Konsequenzen noch aus der Zeit,

die durch den Zweiten Weltkrieg bestimmt wurde.

Ballast der Republik war auch eines der Stücke,

die es ganz zum Schluss auf die Platte geschafft haben.

Die Nummer jetzt fast nicht aufs Album geschafft.

The song almost didn't make it onto the album.

Die lag lange rum und wir hatten auch schon mehrere Versionen davon.

It was lying around for a long time and we already had several versions of it.

Auch eine andere Textversion.

Also another text version.

Das hat wirklich lange gedauert, bis wir da den letzten Dreh für gefunden haben.

It really took a long time until we found the final shot for that.

Das Stück war eines der ersten, das wir hatten.

The piece was one of the first we had.

Und ist dann erstmal fast in den Mülleimer gewandert,

And almost ended up in the trash at first,

weil diese Art Stücke sehr, sehr schwierig sind.

because these kinds of pieces are very, very difficult.

Im Grunde haben die ja was Phärisches und walzen ein Thema ständig durch.

Basically, they have something phallic and constantly roll a theme through.

Und wenn du das ungeschickt machst, dann kann das sehr, sehr langweilig werden.

And if you do that clumsily, it can become very, very boring.

Und man muss schon Glück haben und einen guten Punkt erwischen,

And you have to be lucky and hit a good point,

um diese Wiederholung zu einer Spannung werden zu lassen

to turn this repetition into tension

und das Lied sozusagen wachsen zu lassen.

and to let the song grow, so to speak.

Das ist ja auch ungewöhnlich lang, viereinhalb Minuten.

That is quite unusually long, four and a half minutes.

Ist für so eine Single schon an der Kante von der Länge her.

Aber am Schluss haben wir dann, glaube ich, irgendwo das ganz gut hingekriegt,

Inhalt und Liedmelodie so zu verbinden.

Traurig, einen Sommer lang.

Sad for a summer long.

Das ist für uns eher so ein Joke.

Ja, da geht es um die toten Seelen des Rock'n'Roll.

Und da hat sich dann plötzlich auch Rex Gildo mit da rein verlaufen in das Lied.

And suddenly Rex Gildo also wandered into the song.

Also Bon Scott, Sid Vicious, alle werden sie abgefeiert.

So Bon Scott, Sid Vicious, they are all celebrated.

Aber auch irgendwo Rex Gildo, denn der war ja schließlich in irgendeiner Form Rocker.

But also somewhere Rex Gildo, because after all he was a rocker in some way.

Also ich finde schon, er hat seinen Schlussstrich doch am deutlichsten gezogen

Well, I do think he has drawn his line most clearly.

mit dem Sprung aus dem Fenster.

Ja, das muss man erstmal bringen.

Und darüber waren wir natürlich einen Sommer lang sehr, sehr traurig.

Altes Fieber bezieht sich halt so ein bisschen auf die Abende.

Die sicherlich jeder kennt, dass man mit einem Kumpel eine Flasche Wein aufmacht

und dann geht man zu seiner Vinyl-Singelsammlung oder wie auch immer zu seinen frühen CDs

and then you go to your vinyl single collection or however to your early CDs

und legt die dann auf und durch die Musik kommen dann diese ganzen Gedanken,

and then puts them on, and through the music, all these thoughts come up,

wie das dann zu der Zeit war, als diese Stücke halt aktuell waren.

Und im Überschwang der Gefühle bildet man sich ein, es passt immer noch alles

Aber ich denke, dadurch, dass wir inhaltlich auch noch einen Dreher gefunden haben am Schluss,

Es geht ja darum, dass ein Mann schleppt eine Frau ab und versucht, die abzufüllen,

und kotzt sich da mal so richtig aus.

Also, mit anderen Worten, ein Schicksal, das jedem zweiten von uns sicherlich schon widerfahren ist.

In Europa geht es darum, was sich an den europäischen Außengrenzen abspielt oder an den Grenzen der EU.

In Europe, it is about what is happening at the European external borders or at the borders of the EU.

Vor allem im Mittelmeer, wo nur noch versucht wird, Flüchtlinge abzuwehren oder loszuwerden, egal auf welche Art und Weise.

Wir hatten diese musikalische Idee mit ganz verzerrten Gitarren.

We had this musical idea with completely distorted guitars.

Dann kam noch dieses verzerrte Klavier dazu.

Then this distorted piano was added.

Und das war für uns eine gute Möglichkeit, diese musikalische Idee in diesem Sachverhalt darzustellen.

And that was a good opportunity for us to present this musical idea in this context.

»Weiß dich los« behandelt inhaltlich einfach nur das Thema Unruhe.

"»Weiß dich los« simply deals with the theme of unrest."

Das kennen ja sicherlich auch viele, dass man sich irgendwo an einem fantastischen Ort aufhält,

Many will certainly know this feeling of being in a fantastic place somewhere,

wo eigentlich alles stimmt, außer das eigene Gefühl.

where everything is actually right, except for one's own feeling.

Dass man irgendwo denkt, naja, es ist gut und schön hier, aber das kann es nicht gewesen sein.

That you think somewhere, well, it's nice and good here, but it can't have been it.

Und außerdem passe ich hier irgendwie in dieser Konstellation nicht hin.

And besides, I don't really fit in this configuration.

Das ist mir häufiger widerfahren und ist auch irgendwo so ein Gefühl, was ich persönlich kaum los werde.

This has happened to me more often and is also a feeling that I personally can hardly shake off.

Bei mir passen die Dinge eher so, wenn irgendwas nicht stimmt.

Das ist mir vertrauter, als wenn alles perfekt ist.

Was ich an »Drei Worte« ziemlich gut finde, ist der Kontrast des Textes mit der Musik,

was ziemlich skurril ist.

which is quite bizarre.

Irgendwie.

Somehow.

Dass man im Grunde damit hadert, irgendwas nicht aus dem Mund rauszukriegen, die drei Worte,

That one is fundamentally struggling to get something out of their mouth, the three words,

und dann dazu so ein hartes Stück.

and then such a hard piece to go with it.

Ich finde die Kombination super.

I think the combination is great.

Ja, das war auch ein Lied, was textlich durch mehrere Stadien durchgegangen ist.

Yes, that was also a song that went through several stages in terms of lyrics.

Also die Situation, ein Mikrofon in der Hand zu haben und da dir jetzt unbedingt was sagen zu müssen,

So the situation of having a microphone in your hand and now absolutely needing to say something to you,

wenn man dann so ein Blackout hat oder es fällt einem da nichts zu ein und man fängt an zu schwitzen,

Und gerade in der Beziehungskonstellation, wenn der Moment da ist, dass die Gegenseite hören will,

And especially in the relationship constellation, when the moment comes that the other side wants to listen,

ob man liebt, ob man bereit ist, das ganz große Gefühl auch zuzugeben.

whether one loves, whether one is ready to admit the very big feeling.

Und man will den Abend ja auch nicht riskieren.

Man will aber auch nicht lügen.

But you also don't want to lie.

Und dann hängt man dann da und es kommt einfach nichts.

Und damit ist der Abend im Arsch oder die Beziehung.

Also, ja, ein bisschen psychomäßig halt.

So, yeah, a bit psychotic, you know.

Ja, das Lied »Schade, wie kann das passieren?« ist entstanden, als wir im Münsterland im Studio waren,

um Lieder zu machen, Ideen zu suchen.

to make songs, to search for ideas.

Dann sind wir eines Abends nach Düsseldorf zurückgefahren und haben da ein Play-Off-Halbfinalspiel im Eishockey gesehen,

Und dann kam er mit diesen Refrainzeilen an.

Tatsächlich haben wir das, glaube ich, noch in derselben Nacht fertig gemacht.

Actually, I believe we finished that in the same night.

Das ist, glaube ich, das Stück, was am schnellsten fertig war mit Musik und Text.

I believe this is the piece that was finished the fastest with music and lyrics.

Da wurde natürlich ein bisschen herumgefeilt, aber der Grundstock, das war wirklich in dieser Nacht fertig.

Of course, a bit of tweaking was done, but the foundation was truly finished that night.

Die Vorstellung, wie viele Amateursportler jeden Samstag zu einem Turnier fahren und dann rausfliegen.

The idea of how many amateur athletes go to a tournament every Saturday and then get eliminated.

Es kann ja immer nur einer gewinnen.

Dass die dann alle nach Hause fahren in diesen Minibussen dann

und irgendwo total genervt sind, eine halbe Stunde lang nicht miteinander reden

and somewhere totally annoyed, not talking to each other for half an hour.

und irgendeiner ruft dann scheiß drauf und legt dieses Lied dann ein,

and then someone calls it nonsense and puts this song on,

das wäre meine Wunschvorstellung.

That would be my ideal scenario.

Dass man irgendwo sich den Mund abwischt und sagt, nächste Woche kriegen wir sie.

That one wipes their mouth somewhere and says, we'll get them next week.

Darum geht es.

That's what it's about.

Draußen vor der Tür ist ja ein sehr reduziertes Lied.

"Outside the door is a very reduced song."

Da geht es ja im Grunde nur um Gitarre und Gesang.

It's really just about guitar and singing.

Und wenn du sowas machst, dann ist völlig klar,

And if you do something like that, then it's completely clear,

dass es da wirklich auch auf den Text drauf ankommt.

that it really depends on the text itself.

Im Grunde war das dann schon klar, dass es da um irgendwas gehen musste, was persönlicher war.

Basically, it was clear that it had to be about something more personal.

Sowas kann extrem nach hinten losgehen oder aber auch extrem treffen.

Such things can either backfire extremely or hit the mark extremely well.

Hier geht es um eine Situation, die viele Leute nachvollziehen können.

This is about a situation that many people can relate to.

Dass die Menschen, die man liebt oder geliebt hat, immer noch eine Rolle in unserem Leben spielen,

That the people you love or have loved still play a role in our lives,

auch wenn sie schon lange gestorben sind.

even if they have been dead for a long time.

Also man bleibt ja im Grunde genommen noch immer in Verbindung.

Well, one is basically still in touch.

Und solange man das gedanklich tut, sind die auch nicht weg.

And as long as you do it mentally, they are also not gone.

Oder sind sie auch noch nicht tot in dem Sinne.

Or are they not dead in that sense either?

Ich denke oft an meine Eltern, wenn ich irgendwas mache,

I often think of my parents when I do anything.

besonders schlecht mache oder besonders gut mache,

do particularly poorly or do particularly well,

frage ich mich so, was würden die jetzt wohl dazu sagen.

I wonder what they would say about it now.

Und ich erinnere mich an gewisse Schlüsselsituationen in meinem Alltag heute daran,

And I remember certain key situations in my everyday life today,

wie mir das aus einer anderen Perspektive schon mal geschehen ist, widerfahren ist.

as has happened to me from a different perspective before.

Wie meine Eltern dann auf so eine Situation reagiert hätten.

How my parents would have reacted to such a situation.

Und zu merken, dass man denen vielleicht ähnlicher ist im späteren Leben, als man das je wollte,

And to realize that perhaps you are more similar to them in later life than you ever wanted to be,

das ist irgendwo eine seltsame Erfahrung, die ich versucht habe da auszudrücken.

That is a strange experience somewhere that I tried to express.

Der Moment hat sich natürlich geeignet direkt nach draußen vor der Tür.

The moment was of course suitable right outside the door.

Einmal geht es dann um die Eltern und dann geht es um die Position,

Sometimes it's about the parents and sometimes it's about the position,

dass ich vielleicht selber so als Vater ein paar Zeilen verliere.

Aber im Grunde wollte ich da gar nicht groß über meinen Sohn schreiben.

In dem Lied geht es ja um diese raren Momente, wo man Held ist für einen Abend

und bei Rock am Ring spielt oder so.

and plays at Rock am Ring or something like that.

Aber im Grunde fährt man dann nach Hause und zieht auch ein recht durchschnittliches Leben ab.

But basically, you go home and live a rather ordinary life.

Und das ist auch okay so.

And that is perfectly fine this way.

Es geht darum, dass man bereit ist, im Leben gute Momente einfach zu greifen

It's about being willing to simply seize good moments in life.

und abzufeiern, wenn sie sich anbieten.

and to celebrate when they present themselves.

Nicht sozusagen missbrauchen, möchte ich nicht sagen,

I wouldn’t want to say misused, so to speak,

aber irgendwo eben nicht zu würdigen, indem man es einfach verpasst.

but somewhere not to be appreciated by simply missing it.

Dass man die raren Momente, die das Leben hat, wo es wirklich euphorisch werden kann,

That the rare moments that life has, when it can truly become euphoric,

dass man die auch zulässt und dass man bereit ist, irgendwo loszulassen und auch mal durchzudrehen.

that one also allows this and that one is willing to let go somewhere and also go a little crazy.

Fliegen ist tendenziell eher ein Spalter.

Flying tends to be more divisive.

Da gibt es welche bei uns, die sehr euphorisch waren, bis der Text da war.

There are some among us who were very enthusiastic until the text arrived.

Und andere, die damit überhaupt nichts anfangen konnten, als der Text da war.

And others who couldn't make anything of it once the text was there.

Also das ist so eine Sache.

Well, that's a bit of a thing.

Wir hatten sehr lange die Melodie.

We had the melody for a very long time.

Mich hat das immer irgendwo an Lenny Kravitz erinnert und sowas.

It has always reminded me a bit of Lenny Kravitz and stuff like that.

Und das ist das Problem.

And that is the problem.

Wenn man da einen Blindtext draufsingt, fangen alle anderen an zu träumen,

If you sing a dummy text over it, everyone else starts to dream,

oh, das könnte mal ein Hit werden, wenn jetzt die richtigen Worte kommen.

Oh, this could become a hit if the right words come now.

Und dann ist der Moment des Entzauberns da.

And then the moment of disillusionment arrives.

Der Text wird geliefert.

Und der eine hat sich was über Liebe vorgestellt.

Der andere halt über irgendwelche Weiten in der Wüste oder so.

The other one is just about some distances in the desert or something.

Und die wenigsten haben dann daran gedacht, was ich vielleicht gerade im Kopf hatte.

And the fewest have thought about what I might have had in mind.

Und dann muss man sich wirklich dann immer wieder an einen neuen Text gewöhnen.

And then you really have to get used to a new text again and again.

Oberhausen ist erstens eine sehr unterbewertete Stadt.

Oberhausen is, firstly, a very underrated city.

Und zweitens repräsentiert sie ja auch viele andere deutsche Städte.

And secondly, it also represents many other German cities.

Und mir kam das in dem Text, in der Strophe einfach so vor, dass es zwingend war.

And it just seemed to me in the text, in the verse, that it was imperative.

Ich wollte es nicht mehr ersetzen durch irgendetwas anderes.

I didn’t want to replace it with anything else anymore.

Die wissen nicht, wo das ist und sind dann völlig orientierungslos, obwohl da mehrere Autobahnen zusammenkommen.

Auf der anderen Seite soll es dazu anregen, dass sich eben diese auswärtigen Besucher mal etwas näher mit Oberhausen beschäftigen.

Und das war so ein Beispiel dafür, dass man sich erst an so eine Sache gewöhnen muss.

Und als ich es aufgenommen hatte, ich war persönlich happy damit.

Die anderen haben dann erstmal ein langes Gesicht gezogen und mussten da zwei, drei Tage sich damit daran gewöhnen,
