In meiner Kolumne im Mai geht es um das besondere Fest in diesem Jahr, um das Grundgesetz.

In my column in May, I will talk about the special celebration this year, about the Basic Law.

75 Jahre Grundgesetz und meine sehr spezielle Erinnerung an den ganz bedeutsamen Paragrafen,

75 years of the Basic Law and my very special memory of the very significant paragraph,

das heißt Grundgesetz Artikel 3.

that means Basic Law Article 3.

Hallo, da bin ich wieder mit meiner ganz persönlichen Sicht der Dinge der Welt.

Hello, I'm back with my very personal view of the world.

Es ist Mai und was ist das Besondere am Mai?

It's May, and what's special about May?

Ja, für mich ist immer und seit Jahren das Besondere das Mai-Ansingen am Abend vor dem 1. Mai.

Yes, for me, the special thing for years has always been the May singing on the evening before May 1st.

Ich glaube, ich bin schon in vielen, vielen Jahren am Poppelsdorfer Platz gewesen

I believe I have been to Poppelsdorfer Platz many, many years ago.

und habe die Leute gehört. Ich weiß nicht, ob es ein Chor ist oder Leute, die da frei zusammenkommen.

and I heard the people. I don’t know if it’s a choir or people coming together freely.

Diesmal waren es, glaube ich, so 10, 15 Leute, die wirklich alle Mai-Lieder angestimmt haben.

This time, I think there were about 10 or 15 people who really sang all the May songs.

Der Mai ist gekommen, ja, der lustige Mai und so weiter.

May has come, yes, the merry May and so on.

Aber in diesem Mai, in diesem Jahr, da ist im Mai noch etwas ganz, ganz Besonderes.

But this May, this year, there is something very, very special in May.

Und dieses ganz, ganz Besondere, das ist die 75-Jahr-Feier.

And this very, very special thing is the 75th anniversary celebration.

75 Jahre Grundgesetz. Das ist wirklich ein Grund zum Feiern.

75 years of the Basic Law. That is truly a reason to celebrate.

Ich weiß noch, nein, ich war nicht dabei, aber es wurde erzählt, wie sich die erste Versammlung,

I still remember, no, I was not there, but it was told how the first assembly,

die nachher das Parlament stellte, also der Parlamentarische Rat, im Museum König sich versammelt hat.

which later formed the Parliament, namely the Parliamentary Council, gathered at the König Museum.

Und immer, wenn ich im Museum König bin, unten, wo die großen Giraffen stehen,

And whenever I am in the König Museum, down where the big giraffes are standing,

da ist ja wirklich Platz. In diesem Saal, da hat man sich versammelt und beraten.

There is certainly space. In this hall, people gathered and discussed.

Und das, was rausgekommen ist, hieß eben nicht Verfassung, sollte erst kommen,

And what came out was not called a constitution, it was to come later.

wenn die Wiedervereinigung wieder da ist, sondern Grundgesetz.

"When the reunification is back, but Basic Law."

Aber das Grundgesetz, das ist so gut, dass es sich wirklich lohnt, das zu befeiern.

But the Basic Law is so good that it is truly worth celebrating.

Wird in der ganzen Woche passieren und ganz besonders am nächsten Samstag.

It will happen throughout the week and especially next Saturday.

Aber für mich ist das Grundgesetz auch mit einer Erinnerung verbunden,

But for me, the Basic Law is also associated with a memory,

die ist jetzt nicht 75.

She is not 75 now.

Und zwar war das, wie gesagt, vor 45 Jahren, als ich meine erste Stelle als Lehrerin hatte.

And that was, as I said, 45 years ago, when I had my first job as a teacher.

Und ich weiß nicht, wir hatten Gemeinschaftskunde, Unterricht oder so.

And I don't know, we had social studies, class or something.

Irgendwie kamen wir drauf, ja, Grundgesetz, ich weiß nicht mehr, in welchem Zusammenhang.

Somehow we got onto the topic, yes, Basic Law, I don't remember in what context.

Ich sagte, Michele, lauf doch mal eben in die Bibliothek, diese Schule hatte eine Bibliothek,

I said, Michele, just run to the library real quick, this school had a library.

und hol ein paar Grundgesetze.

and get a few basic laws.

Ja.

Yes.

Und er kam im Rappzapp zurück, weil er sehr flott war, und hatte 16 Grundgesetze, Heftchen.

And he came back in a flash because he was very quick, and he had 16 basic laws, booklets.

Immer für zwei Kinder ein Heftchen, aufschlagen, Artikel 3.

Always a booklet for two children, open it, Article 3.

Und dann durfte Michele das lesen, Artikel 3.

And then Michele was allowed to read that, Article 3.

Niemand darf benachteiligt werden aufgrund seiner Herkunft, seiner Hautfarbe, seiner Religion,

No one may be disadvantaged because of their origin, skin color, or religion,

seiner Geschlechtszugehörigkeit und so weiter.

his gender affiliation and so on.

Michele guckt hoch und sagt, stimmt das?

Michele looks up and says, is that true?

Ja, habe ich gesagt, Michele, das stimmt.

Yes, I said that, Michele, that's true.

Stimmt, es wird nur leider nicht immer so gehandhabt.

That's true, unfortunately it's not always handled that way.

Denn jetzt muss man wissen, Micheles Eltern waren als arbeitende Menschen aus Italien nach Deutschland gekommen.

Because now it must be known that Michele's parents had come to Germany as working people from Italy.

Und ich weiß noch genau, als ich die Namensliste las, habe ich gefragt, ja, wie heißt du und so,

And I remember exactly when I read the name list, I asked, yes, what’s your name, and so on,

da sagte er, ich heiße Michael.

Then he said, my name is Michael.

Und wenn die Mutter kam zum Elternsprechtag und ich sagte Michael, dann zuckte die Mutter zusammen.

And when the mother came to the parent-teacher meeting and I said Michael, the mother flinched.

Und dann bin ich am nächsten Tag hingegangen in der Klasse und habe gesagt, also ich weiß ja nicht,

And then the next day I went to class and said, well, I don't know,

Michael gibt es ja öfter und so, also ich finde Michele sehr viel schicker und klangvoller und so, ne, original italienisch und so.

Michael exists more often and so, so I find Michele much fancier and more melodious and all, you know, original Italian and so.

Und die ganze Klasse war einverstanden, Michele auch, und ab diesem Tag hieß er Michele.

And the whole class agreed, Michele too, and from that day on he was called Michele.

Und als die Schule vor ein paar Jahren, ich weiß nicht, 40-Jähriges oder was, gefeiert hat, oder 45-Jähriges,

And when the school celebrated its anniversary a few years ago, I don't know, 40th or something, or 45th,

da hatte Michele es organisiert, das von den 33...

Michele had organized it, that from the 33...

30 Schülerinnen und Schülern, 15 da waren.

30 students, 15 were there.

Ich habe ihn dann auch gefragt, ich sage, Michele, erinnerst du dich an jene Unterrichtsstunde?

I also asked him, I said, Michele, do you remember that lesson?

Und er sagte, an diese Stunde werde ich mich mein Leben lang erinnern.

And he said, I will remember this hour for the rest of my life.

Und das, das ist unser Grundgesetz und das sollten wir hochhalten.

And that, that is our constitution and we should uphold it.

Und da gibt es nichts, aber gar nichts, was über diesem Grundgesetz stünde.

And there is nothing, absolutely nothing, that stands above this Basic Law.

Und Artikel 1.

And Article 1.

Ist unantastbar.

Is inviolable.

Das umfasst eigentlich alles.

That actually encompasses everything.

Ja, was macht man im Mai?

Yes, what does one do in May?

Ja, die Erdbeeren sind da und die kann man so vielseitig verwenden.

Yes, the strawberries are here and they can be used in so many different ways.

Aber ehrlich gesagt, mir ist sofort Mai-Scholle eingefallen.

But honestly, the first thing that came to mind was May flounder.

Ist vielleicht nicht besonders originell, aber es gibt ja Schollenfilets, die auch gar nicht so klein sind.

It may not be particularly original, but there are flatfish fillets that are not so small after all.

Also Filets.

Also fillets.

Dann hat man nicht diesen riesen Fisch in der Pfanne und schön klein gewürfelter magerer Speck angebraten in Butter,

Then you don't have this huge fish in the pan and nice finely diced lean bacon sautéed in butter,

ein bisschen zur Seite geschoben oder rausgenommen aus der Pfanne und dann die Schollenfilets schön langsam gebraten in Butter.

pushed a little to the side or taken out of the pan and then the sole fillets slowly fried in butter.

Ein bisschen gesalzen, sonst brauchen wir da gar nicht viel zu machen.

A little bit of salt, otherwise we don't really need to do much with it.

Waschen, abtrocknen, ein bisschen salzen, vielleicht ein paar Tropfen Zitrone drauf, kann man aber auch hinterher tun.

Wash, dry, add a little salt, maybe a few drops of lemon on top, but you can also do that afterwards.

Und zu diesen Filets dann eben die Geruchssalz.

And with these fillets, then the scented salt.

Rösteten Speckwürfel, wunderbar.

Roasted bacon cubes, wonderful.

Dazu Kartoffelbrei oder Kartoffelsalat oder eben einfach Salzkartoffeln und Salat.

For that, mashed potatoes or potato salad or simply boiled potatoes and salad.

Ich sage Ihnen, lecker.

I tell you, delicious.

Das waren meine Gedanken zum Grundgesetz und ich hoffe, dass Sie sich auch noch einmal intensiv damit befassen.

Those were my thoughts on the Basic Law, and I hope that you will also take the time to engage with it intensively again.

Es ist so gut und auch so gut lesbar.
