Michael, ich habe am Wochenende ein Buch gelesen und zwar von einer Frau, die dir sehr bekannt ist und wo du auch noch das Glück hattest, sie in ihren besten Jahren kennenzulernen.

Michael, I read a book over the weekend by a woman you know very well and whom you were also lucky enough to meet in her prime.

Ich spreche von Vera Birkenbiel. Viele Menschen haben von ihr gelernt, du auch. Und viele Menschen lernen auch noch nach ihrem Tod von ihr, weil sie einfach die Ikone war, was Persönlichkeitsentwicklung angeht, Neurowissenschaften.

I am talking about Vera Birkenbiel. Many people have learned from her, you too. And many people are still learning from her even after her death, because she was simply an icon when it comes to personal development and neuroscience.

Aber auch über Rhetorik und Kommunikation viel gesprochen hat. Was war denn so bei dir zum Beispiel das, was du von ihr gelernt hast?

But also talked a lot about rhetoric and communication. What was, for example, what you learned from her?

Ja, ihr absoluter Bestseller ist Stroh im Kopf und das Buch kann ich auswendig, als auch das dazugehörige Seminar. Dort war ich nämlich bei ihr und habe mir nachher für wahnsinnig viel Geld eine DVD, ne Quatsch, das war noch eine VHS-Kassette.

Yes, her absolute bestseller is "Straw in the Head," and I can recite the book as well as the associated seminar from memory. I was actually there with her and later bought a VHS cassette for an insane amount of money.

Ich weiß gar nicht mehr, was das ist.

I don't even know what that is anymore.

Yes, yes.

Echt, so eine Kassette habe ich mir gekauft.

Really, I bought a cassette like that.

So alt bin ich schon.

I'm already that old.

Und deshalb sind mir all ihre Geschichten natürlich bis heute noch im Kopf und ich benutze sie auch super gerne in meinen Seminaren, um den Leuten zu erklären, wie das Gehirn funktioniert.

And that is why all their stories are of course still in my mind to this day, and I love using them in my seminars to explain to people how the brain works.

Niemand konnte das besser erklären als Vera mit ihrer segenden Stimme, aber ihre unglaublich liebevolle Art und ihr unfassbar schneller und fixer Geist, der war toll.

No one could explain it better than Vera with her soothing voice, but her incredibly loving nature and her incredibly quick and sharp mind were amazing.

Und das Thema Gehirn.

And the topic is brain.

Geschichten erzählen, das hat sie beherrscht wie kein anderer zuvor und ich glaube auch nachher wird da nie wieder jemand hinkommen.

Telling stories, she mastered it like no one before, and I believe that no one will ever reach that level again.

Die Geschichten von ihr sind dir im Kopf geblieben.

The stories of her have stayed in your mind.

Ich habe das Buch Story Power am Wochenende durchgeblättert.

I flipped through the book Story Power over the weekend.

Und ja, meine Frage an dich.

And yes, my question to you.

Warum, denkst du, sind Jesus und Buddha und viele andere Meister oder Künstler denn so berühmt geworden und deren Geschichten?

Why do you think Jesus and Buddha and many other masters or artists have become so famous and their stories?

Im Kopf geblieben.

Stuck in my mind.

So wie Veras Geschichten dir im Kopf geblieben sind.

Just like Vera's stories have stayed in your mind.

Ja, die, die mich länger kennen, wissen, dass ich ja der Wikinger-Geschichte sehr, sehr verbunden bin, weil ich in Norddeutschland groß geworden bin und genetisch ja ein reiner Skandinavier bin.

Yes, those who have known me longer know that I am very, very attached to Viking history because I grew up in northern Germany and am genetically a pure Scandinavian.

Da gibt es so Gentest, die kann man machen.

There are genetic tests that you can do.

Das ist total witzig.

That's really funny.

Ancestry heißen die.

They are called Ancestry.

Ich klappe nicht so mit einem Getränk hier.

I'm not going to spill a drink here.

Getränk?

Drink?

Man hört.

One hears.

Macht ja nichts.

It's okay.

Ja, also ich bin der Wikinger-Geschichte.

Yes, so I am the Viking story.

Sehr, sehr verbunden.

Very much obliged.

Und die Wikinger konnten nicht schreiben, sondern die hatten nur ihre Runenzeichen, mit denen sie kommuniziert haben.

And the Vikings could not write, but they only had their runes, with which they communicated.

Und trotzdem ist die gesamte nordische Mythologie weiter transportiert.

And yet the entire Norse mythology has been further transmitted.

Und das ist damals eben am Feuer passiert.

And that happened back then by the fire.

Dort hat man sich seine Geschichten erzählt.

There, people told their stories.

Und später haben dann Mönche, die von den Wikingern erst mal versklavt wurden und sie dann bekehrt haben.

And later, monks who were initially enslaved by the Vikings converted them.

So kann es eben manchmal laufen.

That's just how things can sometimes go.

Die ja schon schreiben konnten, diese Geschichten, die am Lagerfeuer erzählt wurden, aufgeschrieben.

Those who could already write, wrote down these stories that were told around the campfire.

Und daraus ist die Edda entstanden.

And from that, the Edda was created.

Das ist quasi die Bibel der Wikinger.

That is basically the Bible of the Vikings.

Und man kann ihre ganze Herkunftsgeschichte und wie sie glauben, dass Menschen miteinander umgehen müssen und welche Funktionen die Götter haben, aus dieser Edda herauslesen.

And one can read their entire origin story and how they believe that humans should interact with each other, as well as what functions the gods have, from this Edda.

Und das ist in allen Mythologien dasselbe.

And that is the same in all mythologies.

Ob es die christliche ist, ob es der Islam ist oder ob es der Buddhismus ist.

Whether it is Christianity, whether it is Islam, or whether it is Buddhism.

Ganz früher haben sich die Menschen die Welt her erklärt und haben eben die Gottheiten benutzt oder den Gott, wenn es nur einen gab,

Long ago, people explained the world to themselves and used deities or God, if there was only one.

der das Ganze irgendwie...

the whole thing somehow...

zusammenhält.

holds together.

Und diese Geschichten hat man sich am Lagerfeuer erzählt.

And these stories were told around the campfire.

Und diese Geschichtenerzähler hatten eben das Talent, Geschichten so zu erzählen, dass man sie weitererzählen kann.

And these storytellers had the talent to tell stories in such a way that one could pass them on.

Und dadurch wird daraus ein Teil einer kulturellen Geschichte, ein sogenanntes kanonisches Werk, ein Werk, das Einfluss hat auf eine gesamte Kultur.

And thus it becomes part of a cultural history, a so-called canonical work, a work that has an influence on an entire culture.

Und deshalb haben sich Jesus und Buddha und Thor und Odin und Zeus durchgesetzt, weil ihre Geschichten am meisten geteilt wurden.

And that is why Jesus and Buddha and Thor and Odin and Zeus prevailed, because their stories were shared the most.

Sie spricht jetzt auch in Ihrem Buch über Redeschmuck.

She now also talks about embellishments in her book.

Also als Redeschmuck bezeichnet sie die Metaphern.

So she refers to metaphors as ornamental language.

Was genau sind denn Metaphern, Michael?

What exactly are metaphors, Michael?

Metaphern sind ein bildliches Beispiel.

Metaphors are a pictorial example.

Ich beispielsweise rede ja gerne in meinem neuen Vortrag Elastee über das Thema, wie funktioniert das Gehirn?

For example, I like to talk about the topic "How does the brain work?" in my new presentation Elastee.

Und diese Synapsen und diese Wabbelmasse und diese Neuronen und Myelinscheiden, das sind alles Fachbegriffe.

And these synapses and this blob-like substance and these neurons and myelin sheaths, those are all technical terms.

Das schreckt die Menschen natürlich eher ab.

That tends to scare people off, of course.

Aber wenn ich denen erkläre, wie das Gehirn funktioniert, am Beispiel Rauchen, dann benutze ich eben nicht die Synapsen und die Neuronen und die Myelinscheiden,

But when I explain to them how the brain works, using smoking as an example, I don't use synapses and neurons and myelin sheaths.

sondern ich stelle die Teilnehmenden an eine Straße vor einer riesigen, zwei Kilometer tiefen Wiese, an deren Ende ein Wald ist.

but I place the participants on a road in front of a huge, two-kilometer-deep meadow, at the end of which there is a forest.

Und sie stehen an einem Grashalm. Das Gras dort ist knöchelhoch auf dieser gesamten Wiese.

And they stand on a blade of grass. The grass there is ankle-high across this entire meadow.

Da sind wahrscheinlich Milliarden von Grashalm.

There are probably billions of blades of grass.

Und sie stehen gerade an Grashalm 1.

And they are currently at grass blade 1.

Und der Grashalm 1 steht sinnbildlich als Metapher.

And the blade of grass stands symbolically as a metaphor.

Als Bild für eine Synapse, ein Neuron in unserem Kopf.

As an image for a synapse, a neuron in our head.

Und dann gehen wir einmal rüber zur Grashalm 1.247.000.000.

And then we go over to grass blade 1,247,000,000.

Und die Verbindung zwischen 1 und 1.247.000.000, dieser Weg, der beschreibt jetzt das Thema Rauchen.

And the connection between 1 and 1,247,000,000, this path now describes the topic of smoking.

Das nehme ich gerne als Beispiel, weil viele das in der Jugend mal probiert haben.

I gladly take that as an example because many have tried it in their youth.

Und wenn wir einmal rübergehen, passiert nichts.

And if we go over there, nothing will happen.

Aber wenn wir 100 Mal rübergegangen sind, weil wir es 100 Mal gedacht haben, dann ist das schon ein kleiner Weg erkennbar.

But when we have crossed over 100 times because we have thought about it 100 times, then a small path is already recognizable.

Wenn wir 1.000 Mal rübergegangen sind, wächst an einigen Stellen wahrscheinlich schon kein Gras mehr.

If we have crossed over 1,000 times, grass probably doesn't grow anymore in some places.

Und ich kann den Weg schon richtig erkennen.

And I can already see the way clearly.

Wenn wir 10.000 Mal rübergegangen sind, wächst an der ganzen Stelle kein Gras mehr.

If we have crossed over 10,000 times, no grass grows in that whole place anymore.

Und wenn ich nicht nur denke, sondern handle, dann stehe ich nicht an Grashalm 1 und laufe rüber zu 1.247.000.000.

And when I not only think but act, then I do not stand at blade of grass 1 and walk over to 1,247,000,000.

Sondern dann sitze ich auf einem Moped.

But then I sit on a moped.

Nachts hat es ein bisschen geregnet und ich gebe Vollgas, lasse die Kupplung springen und rase von Grashalm 1 zu 1.247.000.000.

At night it rained a little and I hit the gas, let the clutch go and raced from blade of grass 1 to 1,247,000,000.

Da wächst nie wieder Gras, wo ich mit dem Moped rüberfahre.

Grass will never grow again where I ride over with the moped.

Und wenn wir dann ein Jahr rauchen, 365 Tage.

And if we then smoke for a year, 365 days.

Eine Schachtel Zigaretten am Tag, 22 Zigaretten damals, 15 Züge pro Zigaretten, 158.000 Mal heißt das über diesen Weg gehen.

A pack of cigarettes a day, 22 cigarettes back then, 15 puffs per cigarette, means going this route 158,000 times.

Dann haben wir dort eine Autobahn, vierspurig, wo Autos mit 420 Stundenkilometern auf allen vier Spuren, unfallfrei, 24 Stunden, sieben Tage die Woche hin und her brettern.

Then we have a highway there, four lanes, where cars zip back and forth at 420 kilometers per hour on all four lanes, accident-free, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Das ist eine Datenautobahn, ein sogenanntes Denkmuster, das sich in unserem Gehirn etabliert haben.

This is a data highway, a so-called thought pattern that has established itself in our brains.

Und dank der Metapher können Sie sich mal eine teilnehmen.

And thanks to the metaphor, you can participate once.

Und dann dieses Beispiel sehr, sehr gut merken.

And then remember this example very, very well.

Und deswegen sind Metaphern so wichtig.

And that's why metaphors are so important.

Gerade schon beim Zuhören.

Just listening in.

Bei mir ist eigentlich nur ein innerlicher Film gerade abgelaufen, wie du gesprochen hast.

I just had an internal film running inside me while you were speaking.

Und ich glaube, so geht es den Zuhörern da draußen auch.

And I believe that the listeners out there feel the same way.

Und das ist halt die Kunst.

And that is the art.

Man verbindet damit auch Emotionen oder eigene Erinnerungen mit diesen Bildsprachen.

One associates emotions or personal memories with these visual languages.

Und das unterstützt das Ganze nochmal zusätzlich, damit es besser im Gedächtnis bleibt.

And that further supports the whole thing, so that it stays better in memory.

Ja, wieso hast du mir den Film Star Wars denn nahegelegt?

Und ihn mir nicht nur nahegelegt.

And not only suggested it to me.

Nicht nur nahegelegt, sondern du hast mich ja durch den Film quasi durchgeleitet, begleitet.

Not only suggested, but you have practically guided me through the film, accompanied me.

Weißt du noch, was du mir da erzählt hast und warum?

Do you remember what you told me there and why?

Ja, genau.

Yes, exactly.

Weil Star Wars, wie diese ganzen Lucas-Filme oder auch die Disney-Filme, klassische Heldenreisen sind.

Because Star Wars, like all those Lucas films or the Disney films, are classic hero's journeys.

Und diese Heldenreise ist eben eine Geschichte, die wir besonders gerne hören

And this hero's journey is indeed a story that we particularly enjoy hearing.

und der wir uns gerne in die Figur des Helden hineinverdenken.

and in which we like to think ourselves into the role of the hero.

Und zwar geht es hier um, ich glaube, heute heißt er Episode 4.

And this is about, I believe, today it's called Episode 4.

Damals hieß der einfach nur Star Wars.

Back then, it was simply called Star Wars.

Der erste Film, der erste Star Wars mit Luke Skywalker, Prinzessin Leia und Darth Vader.

The first film, the first Star Wars with Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, and Darth Vader.

Und der beschreibt die Heldenreise eben am allerbesten.

And that describes the hero's journey best of all.

Der Held weiß erstmal gar nicht, dass er der Held ist.

The hero doesn't even know at first that he is the hero.

In diesem Fall war das Luke Skywalker.

In this case, it was Luke Skywalker.

Man kann übrigens auch Harry Potter nehmen.

You can also take Harry Potter, by the way.

Wunderbar.

Wonderful.

Passt heute sehr, sehr gut, weil den haben heute mehr Leute drauf und gesehen und gehört

It fits very, very well today because more people have seen and heard it today.

oder die Bücher gelesen als Star Wars.

or the books read like Star Wars.

Meine Generation kennt Star Wars und die Jüngeren dann eher Harry Potter.

My generation knows Star Wars, and the younger ones are more familiar with Harry Potter.

Also der Held weiß.

So the hero knows.

Er weiß nicht, dass er der Held ist.

He does not know that he is the hero.

Er spürt schon irgendwie, dass irgendwas in sich ist, was ja jeder Mensch macht.

He can somehow feel that there is something inside him, which is something every person does.

Deswegen können wir uns damit so wunderbar identifizieren.

That's why we can identify with it so wonderfully.

Aber er weiß nicht, dass der Held, dass er der Held ist.

But he does not know that he is the hero.

Und dann kommt der Herold, das ist ein Archetyp nach Campbell.

And then comes the herald, which is an archetype according to Campbell.

Er hat mal Archetypen beschrieben in der Geschichtsschreibung und der Ruf des Abenteuers.

He once described archetypes in historiography and the call of adventure.

Also der Held ist erst in seiner gewohnten Welt.

So the hero is still in his familiar world.

Dann kommt der Ruf des Abenteuers und der Held sagt Nee, ich will gar nicht.

Then comes the call of adventure and the hero says, "No, I don't want to."

Also ich muss hier bleiben.

So I have to stay here.

Luke Skywalker sagte Ich habe hier zu arbeiten bei meinem Onkel auf seiner Farm.

Luke Skywalker said, "I have to work here on my uncle's farm."

Und dann kommt der Held und sagt Nee, ich will gar nicht. Also ich muss hier bleiben. Luke Skywalker sagte Ich habe hier zu arbeiten bei meinem Onkel auf seiner Farm.

And then the hero comes and says No, I don't want to. So I have to stay here. Luke Skywalker said I have to work here for my uncle on his farm.

Und ich kann auch jetzt hier nicht losgehen und das Imperium bekämpfen.

And I can't just go out now and fight the Empire.

Was für ein Quatsch.

What nonsense.

Und dann kommt meistens der nächste Archetyp, der sehr wichtig ist, der Mentor.

And then usually the next archetype comes, which is very important, the mentor.

Obi-Wan Kenobi bei Star Wars und sagt Hör mal, geh auf Reisen.

Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars says, "Hey, go on a journey."

Es ist wichtig und ich stehe an deiner Seite.

It is important and I stand by your side.

Und dann kommt die erste Schwelle und damit auch ein Archetyp der Schwellenhüter.

And then comes the first threshold, along with an archetype of the threshold guardian.

In Star Wars ist das Mos Eili.

In Star Wars, it is Mos Eisley.

Dieser Schwellenhüter sagt Geh nicht.

This gatekeeper says don't go.

Also es wird gefährlich, mein Freund.

So it will get dangerous, my friend.

Und das ist eben dieser Weltraumpiratenhafen Mos Eili, in dem schon Morde passiert.

And this is the space pirate port Mos Eili, where murders have already occurred.

Und Kriminalität, etwas, was er von seiner Farm gar nicht kennt.

And crime, something he doesn't know at all from his farm.

Also das ganze Abenteuer geht recht richtig los.

So the whole adventure really gets going.

Aber die erste Schwelle wird überwunden und dann geht es los.

But the first threshold is crossed and then it begins.

Und als sechstes in der Heldenreise haben wir es mit Proben zu tun.

And as the sixth stage in the hero's journey, we deal with trials.

Wir sehen und lernen kennen, wer sind unsere Verbündeten, wer sind die Feinde.

We see and get to know who our allies are and who the enemies are.

Und dann spielt sich das Ganze so nach vorne bis zum Vordringen zur tiefsten Höhle.

And then everything unfolds like this towards the advance to the deepest cave.

In Star Wars ist das natürlich der Todesstern.

In Star Wars, that is of course the Death Star.

Dieser todbringende Planet von Darth Vader und dem Imperator,

This deadly planet of Darth Vader and the Emperor,

der zerstört.

the destroyer.

Sie finden eine Schwachstelle und rate mal, welcher Pilot den entscheidenden Schuss setzt

You find a weakness, and guess which pilot makes the decisive shot.

in diese kleine winzige Lüftungsöffnung, die den Todesstern zerstören kann.

into this tiny little ventilation shaft that can destroy the Death Star.

Es ist natürlich Luke Skywalker, wo er von seinen Verbündeten dann auch entsprechend geholfen wird.

Of course, it is Luke Skywalker, where he is then appropriately helped by his allies.

Und das ist das Vordringen zur tiefsten Höhle.

And that is the advance to the deepest cave.

Auch Siegfried, die Drachensaga, das typische Beispiel, typische Heldenreise.

Also Siegfried, the dragon saga, the typical example of the typical hero's journey.

Dort haben wir es auch, dort ist es halt der Drache.

There we have it, there it is just the dragon.

Und das ist die entscheidende Prüfung.

And that is the crucial test.

Und wenn die bestanden wird, dann gibt es auch eine Belohnung.

And if that is passed, then there will be a reward.

Dann gibt es den Rückweg.

Then there is the way back.

Meistens steht das Böse dann noch einmal auf und sagt,

Most of the time, evil gets back up and says,

ich bin noch nicht ganz tot und versuch es nochmal.

I am not quite dead yet and will try again.

Aber das besiegen wir dann auch.

But we will overcome that too.

Und dann als letztes kommt die Rückkehr mit dem Elixier.

And finally, the return with the elixir comes.

Das Elixier kann etwas sein.

The elixir can be something.

Bei Siegfried war es, dass er in Drachenblut gebadet hat und dadurch unsterblich wurde.

It was with Siegfried that he bathed in dragon's blood and thereby became immortal.

Bis auf diese kleine Stelle, wo sich das Eichenblatt auf seinen Rücken legte.

Except for this little spot where the oak leaf lay on his back.

Und Xaver von Xanten, der Böse, hat es gesehen und konnte ihn dann später trotzdem ermorden.

And Xaver of Xanten, the evil one, saw it and was still able to murder him later.

Weil er an einer Stelle nicht...

Because he doesn't at one point...

Unsterblich war.

Was immortal.

Das Elixier kann natürlich auch eine Erkenntnis sein.

The elixir can of course also be an insight.

Und das Elixier kann in Luke Skywalkers Fall halt auch die Prinzessin sein,

And the elixir can also be the princess in Luke Skywalker's case.

die man dann bekommt, wie es in einer wunderschönen alten Geschichte ist.

Und das ist die Heldenreise.

And that is the hero's journey.

Eine Geschichte, die quasi jedem Hollywood-Klassiker-Kinofilm zugrunde liegt.

A story that underlies almost every Hollywood classic film.

So, liebe Zuhörenden, jetzt könnt ihr euch ungefähr vorstellen,

So, dear listeners, now you can roughly imagine,

wie mein Abend mit Michael beim Film Star Wars abgelaufen ist.

Denn zu jedem Charakter,

Because for every character,

der da gekommen ist, hat er mich befragt.

The one who came has questioned me.

Und Sarah, was denkst du?

And Sarah, what do you think?

Welche Rolle nimmt dieser Charakter in diesem Film ein?

What role does this character play in this film?

Und dann wurde natürlich ausführlich erklärt,

And then it was of course explained in detail,

wieso das Ganze auch so ist.

why that is the case.

Also wir haben einmal den Held,

So we have the hero,

der dabei eine wichtige Rolle spielt.

which plays an important role in this.

Den Herold, der mit dem Helden auf Abenteuerreise geht.

The herald who goes on an adventure journey with the hero.

Den Mentor.

The mentor.

Ich glaube, den hattest du gerade noch nicht gelandet.

I believe you haven't landed that one yet.

Doch, Obi-Wan Kenobi sogar.

Yes, even Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Ach, Obi-Wan Kenobi, genau.

Ah, Obi-Wan Kenobi, exactly.

Dann, was ist denn mit dem Trickser oder dem Gestaltwandler?

Then, what about the trickster or the shapeshifter?

Ja.

Yes.

Einen guten Charakter.

A good character.

Die weiteren Archetypen.

The other archetypes.

Der Trickser ist auch meistens die lustige Rolle.

The trickster is usually also the funny role.

Das ist bei Star Wars C-3PO dieser lustige Roboter beispielsweise.

For example, that is C-3PO, this funny robot from Star Wars.

Und Chewbacca auch.

And Chewbacca too.

Das ist dieser Affenmensch, der neben Han Solo.

That is that ape man next to Han Solo.

Han Solo ist der Gestaltwandler.

Han Solo is the shapeshifter.

Dazu kommen wir gleich.

We'll get to that shortly.

Und die machen ziemlich wenig tatsächlich.

And they actually do very little.
