Also ich glaube, ich bin auf eine Art sehr geizig.

Das kostbarste, was wir haben.

Und ich halte immer den Anspruch von niemandem, die Zeit zu verschwenden.

And I always expect no one to waste time.

Wenn jemand diese Sendung eine Stunde zwischendurch, was ja auch mal zwei Stunden lang, weil Musik dazwischen war,

If someone watches this show for an hour in between, which can also be two hours long because there was music in between,

zwei Stunden seines Lebens hergibt, der soll was kriegen.

Und ich glaube, ich hatte immer diese Grundspannung.

Weil das weiß man ja nie.

Because you never know that.

Ich sitze zu Hause und gebe mir viel Mühe mit dem Konzept.

I am sitting at home and putting a lot of effort into the concept.

Aber dann, dann muss ich das ja loslassen.

But then, then I have to let that go.

Dann ist es live.

Then it's live.

Dann ist es das, was dann passiert.

Then it is what happens then.

Und darauf muss ich reagieren.

And I have to respond to that.

Und ja, und das war, glaube ich, die Grundspannung.

Und dann gab es natürlich Sendungen, wo ich, wo ich Angst vor hatte, weil ich einen schwierigen Gesprächspartner hatte.

Oder weil es ein heikles Thema.

Or because it is a delicate topic.

Weil es ein heikles Thema war, weil es um Gewalt ging.

Because it was a sensitive topic, because it was about violence.

Ich weiß, als einmal hatte ich ja, zweimal hatte ich einen Mörder im Studio.

I know that once I had, twice I had a murderer in the studio.

Und das erste Mal waren die Kinder noch klein und dann kam ich nach Hause.

And the first time the children were still small and then I came home.

Und der Jüngste hat so eine Angst gehabt, dass ich mit einem Mörder im Studio bin und ob mir nichts passiert und so.

And the youngest was so scared that I was in the studio with a murderer and whether I would be okay and all that.

Also ich habe sehr viel öfter Angst gehabt, als dass ich keine Angst gehabt hätte.

So I have been afraid much more often than I haven't been afraid.

Man kann ja auch gar nicht die vielen Menschen aufzählen, mit denen du hier gesprochen hast.

You can't even count the many people you've talked to here.

Jetzt aus journalistischer Perspektive.

Now from a journalistic perspective.

Wir fallen uns natürlich als erstes immer diese ganzen Promis ein.

Hat das eine Rolle gespielt, wie du die Leute ausgesucht hast?

Also da gab es ja auch durchaus viele Diskussionen hier in der Redaktion zu.

Well, there were certainly many discussions about this here in the editorial team.

Oder überhaupt bin ich das gefragt worden.

Or have I been asked that at all.

Und ich habe mich geweigert, daraus eine Sendung von prominenten Menschen zu machen.

And I refused to make a show out of it with prominent people.

Aus vielen Gründen.

For many reasons.

Ich glaube, wenn man immer eine Welt zeigt.

I believe if you always show a world.

Wo nur ganz wenige einen exklusiven Zugang zu haben, dann ist es so getrennt von dem Leben.

Where only a very few have exclusive access, it is so separated from life.

Aber wenn ich möchte, dass die Menschen was davon haben, dann möchte ich, dass sie inspiriert sein können.

But if I want people to benefit from it, then I want them to be able to feel inspired.

Oder sich reiben oder sich selber besser verstehen.

Or to rub oneself or to understand oneself better.

Auch im Widerspruch sich besser verstehen.

Even in disagreement, better understand each other.

Und ich finde, das geht bei Prominenten nicht gut.

And I think that doesn't go well with celebrities.

Deswegen wollte ich das nie als Kriterium haben.

That's why I never wanted to have that as a criterion.

Ich habe immer gesagt, prominente Menschen und katholische Menschen dürfen gerne kommen, wenn sie was zu sagen haben.

I have always said that prominent people and Catholic people are welcome to come if they have something to say.

Aber nicht, weil sie prominent sind.

But not because they are prominent.

Und es gibt ja eben viele Menschen, die nicht im Scheinwerferlicht stehen.

And there are indeed many people who do not stand in the spotlight.

Wie hast du die denn gefunden?

Den Mörder zum Beispiel.

Ich glaube, über einen Artikel in einer Yoga-Zeitschrift.

Ich lese den Klappentext von jeder Milchtüte.

I read the back of every milk carton.

Also viel habe ich durch das Lesen gefunden.

Well, I have found a lot through reading.

Viel habe ich dadurch gefunden, dass sich meine Arbeit auch verschränkt hat.

I found a lot through the intertwining of my work.

Wenn ich zum Beispiel große, wirklich große Veranstaltungen auf evangelischen Kirchentagen moderiert habe,

For example, when I have hosted large, really large events at Protestant church days,

dann waren da Leute auf dem Podium, die auch interessant waren.

Then there were people on the panel who were also interesting.

Das war bei Menschen, die sehr prominent sind, dann auch einfacher, wenn die mich dann gesehen haben.

It was easier with people who are very prominent when they saw me.

Und ich wollte mit denen was machen.

And I wanted to do something with them.

Nicht, weil sie prominent waren, sondern weil sie wirklich was zu sagen hatten.

Not because they were prominent, but because they really had something to say.

Dann habe ich selbst angesprochen.

Then I spoke up myself.

Also durch die Bühnenmoderation.

So through the stage moderation.

Ist viel gekommen.

A lot has come.

Durch das Lesen ist viel gekommen.

A lot has come through reading.

Durch Empfehlungen ist viel gekommen.

A lot has come through recommendations.

Also immer dann, wenn ich jemanden zu Gast hatte, wo ich genau wusste, darum geht es in dieser Sendung.

So whenever I had someone as a guest, I knew exactly that this is what the show is about.

Dann habe ich die gefragt.

Then I asked them.

Wen kennen Sie denn noch, wenn dieses Format passen würde?

Who else do you know that this format would suit?

So ist auch viel passiert.

A lot has happened as well.

Also und dann manchmal habe ich fünf Jahre später, hat sich jemand bei mir gemeldet und gesagt, ich wüsste da noch jemanden.

So sometimes five years later, someone has contacted me and said, I know someone else.

Also so.

So be it.

Und wenn du dann zum Beispiel auf der Milchtüte Namen gelesen hast, dann hattest du ein kleines Notizbuch, wo du alles aufgeschrieben hast?

And if you read names on the milk carton, did you have a little notebook where you wrote everything down?

Ich habe eine große Kladde gehabt.

I had a large notebook.

Tatsächlich.

Indeed.

Die habe ich jetzt tatsächlich, das hat wehgetan, weil da waren bestimmt noch, ich schätze mal so 50, 60 Namen, die irgendwie in Frage gekommen wären.

I actually have that now, it hurt because there were definitely still, I would estimate about 50 or 60 names that could have been considered.

Und die habe ich dann regelmäßig durchgeguckt und die habe ich jetzt weggetan.

And I regularly went through them and now I have gotten rid of them.

Ja und wir gucken ja heute nicht nur auf die Menschen, die hier waren, sondern vor allen Dingen auch darauf, was ist denn immer so daraus entstanden, wenn das Mikro ausgegangen ist.

Und da hören wir jetzt mal rein in einen O-Ton von einem Menschen, den wirst du sofort erkennen.

Also ein Mensch, der gerettet worden ist, weil Oskar Schindler seine berühmte Liste geschrieben hat.

So a person who was saved because Oskar Schindler wrote his famous list.

Berühmt geworden durch den Spielberg-Film im Jahr 1993 und dieser Film war im Jahr 2000 der Film des Jahrzehnts.

Became famous through the Spielberg film in 1993, and this film was the movie of the decade in 2000.

Also ein Film, der weltweit die Menschen bewegt hat.

So, a film that has moved people worldwide.

Ja klar und Jesse hat auf dieser Liste gestanden und er war in dieser Sendung.

Yes, of course, and Jesse was on that list and he was in that show.

Und dann hast du den eingeladen. Eigentlich heißt er ja Michael Emge.

And then you invited him. Actually, his name is Michael Emge.

Nee, eigentlich heißt er Jesse.

Er heißt eigentlich Jesse Kroos und diesen Namen kann ich öffentlich aber erst benutzen, seitdem er im Juli 2014 gestorben ist.

Weil er tatsächlich, und es gibt Dinge, die sind so schrecklich, weil er tatsächlich in Köln in den 1990er Jahren von Neonazis bedroht worden ist.

Because he was actually threatened by neo-Nazis in Cologne in the 1990s, and there are things that are so terrible.

Einfach nur, weil er Jude war.

Simply because he was Jewish.

Und deswegen, die Polizei hat das sehr ernst genommen.

And that's why the police took it very seriously.

Also er hat so Drohungen bekommen, nächtliche Anrufe und so ein Kram.

So he received threats, nighttime calls, and that kind of stuff.

So.

Du Judensau, wir wissen, wo du wohnst. Wenn du auf die Straße gehst, wirst du liquidiert.

Das war dann nachts um drei auf seinem Anrufbeantworter.

That was then at three in the morning on his answering machine.

Und die Polizei hat ihm halt geraten, eine Geheimadresse zu haben und nur unter Pseudonym in die Öffentlichkeit zu gehen.

And the police advised him to have a secret address and to only go public under a pseudonym.

Und deswegen habe ich ihn, solange wie er gelebt hat, nach seinem selbstgewählten Pseudonym Michael Emge benannt.

And that is why I named him after his self-chosen pseudonym, Michael Emge, for as long as he lived.

Aber seitdem er tot ist, kann ich ihm wenigstens seinen Namen öffentlich zurückgeben.

But now that he is dead, I can at least publicly restore his name.

Und das war eben Jesse Kroos, der tatsächlich auf der Liste steht.

Und es ist ja eine große Freundschaft, kann man sagen.

Das war ein langer Weg, weil dieser Mensch so viel Hinterhältigkeit und Grausamkeit und Sadismus erlebt hat.

And he was a man who actually trusted no one anymore.

Deswegen war das ein langer Weg. Aber ganz am Ende war es tatsächlich eine große Freundschaft.

Und vorher hattet ihr ja auch noch gemeinsame Projekte zusammen gemacht.

Eine Sondersendung. Im Juni 2008 ist dann erstmal eine Sondersendung geworden,

Because there was a little girl who was interested in the topic, Judith Stapf, a violinist.

Da muss man wissen, dass er auch ein Geiger war.

Und ja, erst haben sie sich getroffen und ich habe das dann dokumentiert.

Dann haben wir daraus eine Sondersendung gemacht.

Then we made a special program out of it.

Dann ist daraus ein Regisseur gehört.

Dann ist daraus ein Film geworden.

Then it became a film.

Der ist in der ARD gelaufen und bei Dreisat gelaufen und bei Arte gelaufen.

It has aired on ARD, on Dreisat, and on Arte.

Und dann kam ein Verlag und wollte, dass ich darüber ein Buch schreibe.

And then a publisher came and wanted me to write a book about it.

Dann habe ich ein Jugendbuch geschrieben und dann kam das Buch.

Then I wrote a young adult book and then the book came.

Dann habe ich eine Bühnenfassung geschrieben.

Then I wrote a stage adaptation.

Und mit dieser Bühnenfassung bin ich tatsächlich seit 2011 in ganz Deutschland unterwegs.

And with this stage version, I have indeed been on tour all over Germany since 2011.

In den letzten Jahren mehr in Schulen.

In recent years more in schools.

Also heute gibt es auch Patenschulen, wo ich jedes Jahr hingehe.

So today there are also partner schools that I go to every year.

Und ich habe diese Veranstaltungen auf der Bühne immer mal wieder gefilmt.

And I have filmed these events on stage every now and then.

Deswegen seit 2014 habe ich halt Jersey als Video im Gepäck.

That's why I've had Jersey as a video with me since 2014.

Und er spricht immer noch zu Jugendlichen.

And he still speaks to young people.

Immer noch zu Jugendlichen, die im gleichen Alter sind, wie er war, als er im KZ war.

Still to adolescents who are the same age as he was when he was in the concentration camp.

Und das ist immer noch jedes Mal, sind das zwischen, weiß ich nicht, 150 und 300 Jugendliche.

And that still involves, I don't know, between 150 and 300 young people each time.

Und jedes Mal.

And every time.

Es ist wirklich sehr bewegend, weil diese jungen Menschen so offen sind.

It is really very moving because these young people are so open.

Und dieses Thema wirklich anhören und wirklich mitgehen.

And really listen to this topic and truly engage with it.

Und ja, das stimmt.

Also mit dieser einen kleinen Sendung angefangen und es ist ein großes Projekt geworden.

Du hast den Namen schon genannt und die hat damals das hier gesagt.

Für mich ist das Stück wie so eine Tröstung.

For me, the piece is like a consolation.

Also so als würde man jemanden trösten, der das Schlimme erlebt hat.

So, as if you were comforting someone who has experienced something terrible.

Da hat sie über die Musik geredet auch.

She talked about the music too.

Wie kam das denn?

How did that happen?

Wie ist denn diese Judith Stapp, ich sag mal, zu dir und zu Jersey gestoßen?

How did this Judith Stapp, I would say, come to you and to Jersey?

Also im Grunde sind es zwei verschiedene Geschichten.

So basically, they are two different stories.

Die Judith war die Tochter meiner besten Freundin oder ist die Tochter meiner besten Freundin.

Judith was the daughter of my best friend or is the daughter of my best friend.

Und war Nachbarskind.

And was a neighbor's child.

Und Judith hat eben über ein Geigenvorbild Itzhak Perlman, der die Filmmusik zu Schindlers Liste von Steven Spielberg eingespielt hat, performt hat, auch mit großen Orchestern.

And Judith just performed a violin model by Itzhak Perlman, who recorded the film music for Schindler's List by Steven Spielberg, also with large orchestras.

Den hat sie gesucht und hat sie bei YouTube gefunden, dass er eben Schindlers Liste die Musik, die Filmmusik mit Orchester spielt.

She was looking for it and found it on YouTube, that he plays the music from Schindler's List, the film music with an orchestra.

Und dann wollte sie das spielen und wollte aber verstehen, warum die Menschen im Publikum weinen und so berührt sind.

And then she wanted to play it but wanted to understand why the people in the audience were crying and so moved.

Und ja, und dann habe ich auf der einen Seite hatte ich den Jersey eingeladen und der hat dann im Studio seine Geschichte erzählt.

And yes, then I had the Jersey invited on one side, and he then told his story in the studio.

Und auf der anderen Seite, das hatte so ein bisschen vorher angefangen, hat die Judith halt sich mit dem Holocaust auseinandergesetzt.

And on the other side, it had started a bit earlier, Judith had been dealing with the Holocaust.

Damals war sie zehn.

At that time she was ten.

Und irgendwann stand sie halt vor uns und sagte, also wenn ich das verstehen will und ich muss das verstehen, sonst kann ich die Musik nicht spielen.

And at some point, she just stood in front of us and said, well, if I want to understand this and I have to understand it, otherwise I can't play the music.

Dann muss ich jemandem in die Augen gucken, der das Schlimme erlebt hat.

Then I have to look someone in the eyes who has experienced the worst.

Und da das dann eben, weil ich dann einen Holocaust-Überlebenden im Studio hatte.

And since that was then, because I had a Holocaust survivor in the studio.

Da habe ich einfach gefragt, ob ich die beiden bekannt machen kann.

I just asked if I could introduce the two of them.

Und das war natürlich, also das Leben ist ja viel verrückter, als ich das mir als Autorin ausdenken dürfte.

And that was, of course, life is much crazier than I could ever imagine as a writer.

Denn da waren zwei Wunderkinder an der Geige, die sich über das gleiche Thema gefunden haben.

For there were two child prodigies on the violin who had found each other over the same theme.

Denn es war ja ein großes Glück, dass ich Judith irgendeinen Überlebenden, einen überlebenden Mensch aus dem Holocaust vorstellen konnte.

For it was a great fortune that I could introduce Judith to any survivor, a surviving person from the Holocaust.

Aber dass ich jemanden vorstellen konnte, der das erlebt hat, wovon diese Filmmusik erzählt.

But that I could introduce someone who has experienced what this film music is about.

Aber als Kinder auf der Liste stand und der auch noch Geiger ist.

But when children were on the list and he is also a violinist.

Ich meine, das kann man sich nicht ausdenken.

I mean, you can't make that up.

Und ja, und dann haben die beiden sich getroffen.

And yes, and then the two of them met.

Damals war Judith elf und Jessie war 79 Jahre alt.

At that time, Judith was eleven and Jessie was seventy-nine years old.

Und es war natürlich eine Aufgabe, diese beiden Menschen über die vielen Jahrzehnte dazwischen zusammenzubringen.

And of course it was a challenge to bring these two people together over the many decades in between.

Einerseits war das schwer und andererseits war es leicht, weil es zwei MusikerInnen waren, die sich einfach begegnen konnten auf Augenhöhe.

On one hand, it was difficult, and on the other hand, it was easy because there were two musicians who could simply meet at eye level.

Und wie haben die sich menschlich verstanden?

And how did they understand each other on a personal level?

Auch mit dem Altersunterschied.

Even with the age difference.

Großartig.

Great.

Das war wirklich, das war so, also Jessie hat die kleine Judith überhaupt nicht geschont.

That was really, that was so, well Jessie did not spare little Judith at all.

Also er hat sie herausgefordert und als er gemerkt hat, sie meint es ernst, dann hat er erzählt.

So he challenged her, and when he realized she was serious, he started to talk.

Und Judith war natürlich überfordert.

And Judith was of course overwhelmed.

Aber andererseits, wenn ein Kind die Herausforderung selber so sehr sucht, dann, ich meine, bei dem Thema Holocaust sind wir alle überfordert.

The story I mean now started with Rupert Neudeck, the journalist, who chartered a ship over 40 years ago with his wife Christel.

Kap Anamur, umgebaut zum Hospitalschiff und ist dann ins südchinesische Meer, um die Boat People aufzusammeln.

Cape Anamur was converted into a hospital ship and then went to the South China Sea to pick up the boat people.

And there my boat people class was waiting for me.

Und das war jeden Freitag ein Abenteuer.

And that was an adventure every Friday.

Und ich wollte denen so gerne Deutsch beibringen.

And I really wanted to teach them German.

Und ich musste verstehen, wie das geht, dass ich ihnen Deutsch beibringe.

And I had to understand how it works that I teach them German.

Und ja, es gab viele Berührungspunkte.

And yes, there were many points of contact.

Und es war deswegen einer meiner Helden, weil bei ihm so viel Übereinstimmung war

And he was one of my heroes because there was so much agreement in him.

zwischen dem, was er gesagt hat und dem, was er getan hat.

Das war für mich immer wichtig.

That has always been important to me.

Und wichtig war auch immer für mich, wenn Menschen ernst machen.

Also er hat ja damals zugeguckt im Fernsehen, wie die Menschen ertrinken.

Und er hat einen Weg gefunden zu helfen.

Und das ist auch meine Erfahrung, es ist viel leichter zu helfen,

And that is also my experience, it is much easier to help,

als in dieser Ohnmacht zu bleiben und zuzugucken.

Ich habe seinen Weg sehr verfolgt.

And back then, for me, 60 was really old.

Und das war ein drahtiger, athletischer, dünner Mensch,

Der selber Kollege war auch, deine Frage, wann ich Angst hatte.

Ich hatte immer sehr viel mehr Angst, wenn ein Kollege oder eine Kollegin

auf der anderen Seite war, weil ich natürlich genau wusste,

dass die meine Arbeit ganz anders einschätzen können.

that they can assess my work quite differently.

Damals hatte ich Angst, weil er hat ja beim Deutschlandfunk Radio gemacht.

Back then, I was scared because he worked at Deutschlandfunk Radio.

Ich wusste, der kann das alles, was ich hier kann, in besser.

I knew he could do everything I can do here, but better.

Und er hat mitgekriegt,

And he noticed,

mit großer Ernsthaftigkeit sich auf diese kleine Journalistin eingelassen.

Engaged with this little journalist with great seriousness.

Und ich glaube, wir haben damals eine gute Sendung gemacht.

And I believe we put on a good show back then.

Und aus dieser Begegnung ist ja dann irgendwann eine Schule entstanden.

And from this encounter, a school eventually emerged.

Ja, die Schule ist natürlich erst mal so entstanden,

Yes, the school was of course created like this at first,

dass ich für mein jüngstes Kind keine Schule finden konnte.

that I could not find a school for my youngest child.

Und dann gab es auf einmal ein Schulprojekt.

And then there was suddenly a school project.

Dann wurde eine Schule gegründet.

Then a school was founded.

Und dann habe ich so einen Deal mit dem Universum gemacht

And then I made a deal with the universe.

und habe gesagt, pass auf, Universum.

and said, watch out, Universe.

Ich helfe, dass hier eine vernünftige Schule entsteht.

I am helping to create a proper school here.

Dafür bekommt mein Kind einen guten Schulplatz.

For that, my child gets a good school place.

Okay, da hatte ich was gesagt.

Okay, I said something there.

Da hatte ich einen Deal mit dem Universum geschlossen.

I had struck a deal with the universe.

Jedenfalls, das war sehr viel Arbeit.

Anyway, that was a lot of work.

Und das ist aber eine sehr gute Schule geworden.

And that has become a very good school.

Und dann gab es eine Phase,

And then there was a phase,

in der diese Schule nicht so gut funktionierte.

in which this school did not function so well.

Das war damals eine Sekundarschule.

That was a secondary school back then.

Und dann wollten wir daraus eine Gesamtschule machen.

And then we wanted to make it a comprehensive school.

Also eine zweite Schule am Ort etablieren,

So, establish a second school in the area,

bei der man Abitur machen kann.

where one can take the Abitur.

Damit es wirklich eine Schule für alle Kinder ist.

So that it really is a school for all children.

Das ist auch was, was ich einfach wichtig finde,

That is something I simply find important,

dass Kinder zusammen lernen,

that children learn together,

dass man sie nicht so früh aussortiert,

that they are not sorted out so early,

dass man nach der vierten Klasse nicht sagt,

that one does not say after the fourth grade,

die Guten ins Töpfchen und die Schlechten ins Kröpfchen.

The good ones into the little pot and the bad ones into the little crop.

Deswegen habe ich mich da so reingehangen.

That's why I put so much effort into it.

Und dann haben wir diesen großen Kampf tatsächlich gewonnen.

And then we actually won that great battle.

Wir konnten eine Gesamtschule machen, anbieten.

We were able to offer a comprehensive school.

Dann musste das sich ja noch einlösen,

Then it had to be redeemed after all.

weil dann brauchten wir 100 Anmeldungen,

because then we would need 100 registrations,

damit diese Schule auch wirklich ins Leben kam.

so that this school actually came to life.

Und in dieser Phase haben wir nach einem Schulnamen gesucht.

And during this phase, we were looking for a school name.

Das war 2016.

That was in 2016.

Und am 31. Mai 2016 ist Rupert Neudeck gestorben.

And on May 31, 2016, Rupert Neudeck passed away.

Und hat dann gesagt,

And then said,

wir wollen den Staatspreis bekommen.

We want to receive the state prize.

Zusammen mit seiner Frau Christel in Würdigung seines Gesamtwerkes.

Along with his wife Christel in recognition of his life's work.

Und dadurch war der auf einmal in der Schulgemeinschaft präsent, der Name.

And as a result, the name suddenly became present within the school community.

Und ich hatte immer die Vorstellung,

And I always had the notion,

dass ein Schulname ein Programm ist.

that a school name is a program.

Ein Schulprogramm ist, womit man arbeiten kann.

A school program is something you can work with.

Und natürlich, ich habe gesagt,

And of course, I said,

dass ich schon als junges Mädchen Rupert Neudeck entdeckt habe.

that I discovered Rupert Neudeck when I was a young girl.

In diesem Leben ist alles, was ich wichtig finde.

In this life, everything that I find important.

Und ich glaube, darin ist alles, was wir brauchen,

Wir haben daraus ein Motto gemacht.

We made a motto out of it.

Menschlich, mutig, miteinander.

Human, courageous, together.

Das finden wir wichtig.

Und wichtiger,

als Englisch und Deutsch,

ist es einfach menschlich und mutig zu sein

Und deswegen ist daraus die Rupert-Neudeck-Gesamtschule

oder auf irgendwelche Flyer, sondern wir wollten das ja leben.

or on any flyers, but we wanted to live it.

Also haben wir uns überlegt,

So we thought,

wie können wir aus dem Motto ein Schulprogramm machen?

Wie können wir die kleinen Kinder, die mittelgroßen Kinder,

How can we help the small children, the medium-sized children,

die Abiturienten und ihnen verbinden damit,

the high school graduates and connect them with

Die müssen aktiv werden.

They need to take action.

Sonst Rupert Neudeck war aktiv.

Man muss Dinge tun.

Und eine Idee war eben tatsächlich,

mit ihnen in ein afrikanisches Land zu fliegen,

to fly with them to an African country,

ihnen zu zeigen, wie die Gleichaltrigen dort leben,

to show them how the peers live there,

zur Schule gehen.

Und das war furchtbar schwer.

And that was terribly hard.

Es war furchtbar schwer, so eine Schule zu finden.

It was terribly difficult to find such a school.

Es gab so internationale Schulen, da gab es Wege.

There were international schools where there were paths.

Aber das war es ja nicht, worum es ging.

But that wasn’t what it was about.

Und dann habe ich, als ich dann die Sendung abmoderiert hatte,

And then, after I had wrapped up the show,

habe ich gesagt, sagen Sie, Sie haben da eben erzählt.

I said, you mentioned that just now.

Und dann kam eins zum anderen.

And then one thing led to another.

Und dann, ja, und dann kannten wir uns ja schon.

And then, yes, and then we already knew each other.

Es ist auch immer hilfreich bei solchen Geschichten.

Also das Fashion Department dieser Schule hatte das geschneidert.

So the fashion department of this school had tailored that.

Und das war einfach so schön.

And that was just so beautiful.

Die hatten sich richtig Gedanken gemacht,

They had really thought it through,

auch bei der Farbwahl und so.

also when it comes to choosing colors and such.

Und diese Reise war fast zu Ende.

And this journey was almost over.

Und wir hatten diese Partnerschaft geschafft, was gar nicht leicht war.

And we had succeeded in this partnership, which was not easy at all.

Und das war gar nicht klar, dass wir das tun würden.

dass sie ein Dach über dem Kopf haben,

that they have a roof over their heads,

dass sie medizinische Versorgung haben.

Wenn das ist, dann kommen die Schulen.

Also so geht das.

Das war mir immer auf der Welt so begegnet.
