Woher kommt die Tradition des Leichenschmauses?

Ich bin jetzt einfach durch das Wort Leichenwaschung auf ein anderes Wort gekommen, das ist der Leichenschmaus.

Das würde mich noch interessieren, wo der herkommt, wo kommt da die Tradition her oder wo kommt doch dieses Wort her?

Der Leichenschmaus war früher tatsächlich immer eine echte Mahlzeit.

Die hatte zunächst auch ganz praktische Gründe.

Man stelle sich vor, früher kamen die Leute zur Beerdigung teilweise von weit her zusammen

und die musste man dann auch entsprechend verköstigen.

Die hatten ja auch wieder einen weiten Rückweg.

Die Sargträger, die hatten ja schwere Arbeit zu verrichten, auch die mussten verköstigt werden und mussten auch was zu trinken bekommen.

Also erstmal ganz praktische Gründe.

Und darüber hinaus gehört aber der Leichenschmaus, und da wurde eben wirklich auch aufgetischt und getafelt und getrunken,

Und das gelingt eben bei Essen und Trinken, sagt man ja auch, das hält Leib und Seele zusammen.
