Konvertit sein macht das Leben nicht gerade einfacher.

Being a convert doesn't exactly make life easier.

Ich habe zwar das zweifelhafte Glück, optisch so gar nicht als Muslimin wahrgenommen zu werden.

I have the dubious fortune of not being perceived as a Muslim visually at all.

Dadurch erfahre ich keine Diskriminierung aufgrund meiner äußeren Erscheinung,

wie so viele andere Musliminnen, die zum Beispiel Kopftuch tragen.

like so many other Muslim women who, for example, wear a headscarf.

Oder muslimische Männer, denen man ihre vermeintliche Herkunft direkt ansieht.

Or Muslim men whose supposed origin is evident at first glance.

Sobald es jedoch in Gesprächen um meine Religion geht, werde ich bestenfalls mit Erstaunen konfrontiert.

However, as soon as conversations turn to my religion, I am at best confronted with astonishment.

Oft aber auch mit Unverständnis oder Ablehnung.

Often, however, with misunderstanding or rejection.

Die allgemeine politische Stimmung im Land trägt ihren Teil dazu bei.

The general political atmosphere in the country contributes to this.

Noch schlimmer als die Ablehnung ist jedoch folgende Reaktion, die mir oft begegnet.

However, even worse than the rejection is the following reaction that I often encounter.

Ich frage dann oft zurück, woher man denn wisse, dass die Mehrheit der Muslime nicht so sei wie ich.

I often ask back where one knows that the majority of Muslims are not like me.

Auch innerhalb der muslimischen Community muss ich mich oft rechtfertigen.

Even within the Muslim community, I often have to justify myself.

Ob ich denn überhaupt den Koran gelesen hätte.

Whether I have even read the Quran.

Ob mein Mann denn auch Muslim sei.

Whether my husband is also a Muslim.

Ist er übrigens nicht, er ist Atheist.

By the way, he is not; he is an atheist.

Wann ich anfangen möchte, Kopftuch zu tragen und so weiter.

When I want to start wearing a headscarf and so on.

Da steht man also zwischen diesen beiden Lagern und muss sich für die Wahl seiner Religion,

So one stands between these two camps and must choose their religion,

das Recht darauf ist übrigens im Grundgesetz verankert, rechtfertigen.

The right to it is anchored in the Basic Law, by the way, to justify.

Recht machen kann man es ohnehin den wenigsten.

Daher sind Konvertiten, gerade wenn sie den Islam offener und moderner leben und interpretieren,

leider meistens ohne richtige Gemeinschaft in Deutschland.

Dennoch liebe und lebe ich meine Religion offen und stolz und freue mich darüber.
