So why doesn't it work tonight?

Es geht nicht um UEFA.

It's not about UEFA.

Es geht auch nicht um den Vatikan.

It's not about the Vatican either.

Es geht eigentlich um was viel Kleineres im Grunde.

It's actually about something much smaller at its core.

Es geht darum, dass die Verurteilung gleichgeschlechtlicher Handlungen von religiösen Menschen ja immer wieder mit der Bibel begründet wird.

It is about the fact that the condemnation of same-sex acts by religious people is repeatedly justified with the Bible.

Und das eben keinesfalls in der katholischen Kirche.

And certainly not in the Catholic Church.

Also in den USA vor allem, im ganzen evangelikalen Spektrum ist das.

So in the USA, especially within the entire evangelical spectrum, that is.

Da gibt es ja keinen Katechismus und keinen Papst, aber es gibt die Bibel.

There is no catechism and no pope, but there is the Bible.

Es gibt auch keine Glaubenskongregation.

There is also no Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

Und die Homophobie wird oft bei religiösen Menschen mit den religiösen Schriften begründet.

And homophobia is often justified by religious people with religious texts.

Und das eben auch mit der Bibel.

And that precisely with the Bible.

Deshalb frage ich mit Ihnen heute, trägt die Bibel die Last dieser Verurteilung?

That is why I ask you today, does the Bible bear the burden of this condemnation?

Dann was wissen wir?

Then what do we know?

Was wissen wir über gleichgeschlechtliche Handlungen in der Antike?

What do we know about same-sex acts in antiquity?

Wogegen richten sich also diese biblischen Verbote und Verurteilungen?

What do these biblical prohibitions and condemnations address?

Und dann können wir fragen, was hat das Ganze vielleicht mit heute zu tun und mit unserer heutigen Diskussion?

And then we can ask, what does all of this have to do with today and with our discussion today?

Aber eben auch, wo liegen die Grenzen der biblischen Argumentation für unsere heutigen Fragen?

But also, where are the limits of biblical argumentation for our contemporary questions?

Und gibt es eben auch aus heutiger Sicht Kritik an ihren Positionen?

And is there also criticism of their positions from today's perspective?

Also das ist so das ganze Spektrum.

So that's the whole spectrum.

Und damit beginne ich.

And with that, I begin.

Das war eben der Hashtag, der in der katholischen Kirche verwendet wurde, als eben die Glaubenskongregation nochmal in Erinnerung gerufen hatte, was die Position der katholischen Kirche ist.

That was indeed the hashtag used in the Catholic Church when the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith reminded everyone of the Catholic Church's position.

Darauf gehe ich jetzt nicht mehr ein.

I won't elaborate on that anymore.

Darauf entstand aber eben eine große Bewegung, auch ökumenischer Art,

Wie gesagt, jetzt komme ich zur Bibel.

Die Bibel fragt sich erstens, kennt und verurteilt das alte Testament Homosexualität.

The Bible asks first, does the Old Testament know and condemn homosexuality?

Also im Alten Testament finden sich nämlich die Stellen, auf die sich dann auch Paulus bezieht.

Well, in the Old Testament there are indeed the passages that Paul refers to.

Insofern ist das eben auch die Grundlage für das Neue Testament.

In this regard, it is also the foundation for the New Testament.

Wir lesen die Stellen, Buch Leviticus.

We read the passages, the Book of Leviticus.

Und bei einem Mann sollst du...

And with a man, you should...

Also das sind die beiden Klassiker, sage ich mal,

So those are the two classics, I would say,

die sich in allen religiösen Begründungen immer wieder finden.

Worum geht es hier?

What is this about?

Und was ist das, was wir hier sagen?

And what is it that we are saying here?

Zunächst mal ganz basal.

First of all, quite basic.

In unserer Diskussion muss man sich klar sein, Homosexualität als sexuelle Identität.

In our discussion, one must be clear about homosexuality as a sexual identity.

Also überhaupt als Konzept, Sexualität und Identität integrieren,

So overall as a concept, integrating sexuality and identity,

das Persönlichkeitskonzept, können wir nur anachronistisch auf die Antike übertragen.

The concept of personality can only be transferred anachronistically to antiquity.

Es kennt weder die Antike der Sache nach, noch den Begriff nach.

It knows neither the antiquity of the matter nor the concept.

Der Thomas Sicke hat dann Texte untersucht im Alten Orient, in Ägypten, auch im Alten Griechenland.

Thomas Sicke then examined texts from the Ancient Orient, in Egypt, and also in Ancient Greece.

Und wenn man es zusammenfassen wollte, muss man sagen, Sexualität und eben auch sexuelle Gewalt

And to summarize it, one must say, sexuality and also sexual violence.

ist eine Frage von Macht und Unterwerfung, von Scham und Ehre.

It is a question of power and submission, of shame and honor.

Also Scham und Ehre, das wird so oft gesagt, für den Mittelmeerraum,

So shame and honor, it is said so often, for the Mediterranean region,

als Beschreibung dieser Kultur, vor allem eben in der klassischen Zeit.

as a description of this culture, especially in classical times.

Aber man sieht es eben auch schon im Alten Orient, wie hier Hicke auch schreibt.

But you can already see it in the ancient Orient, as Hicke also writes here.

Assyrien, Griechenland sind die Verhältnisse nochmal sehr, sehr unterschiedlich.

Assyria and Greece have very, very different conditions.

Aber vergleichbar ist die Tatsache, dass es beschämend ist, von einem gleichgestellten Mann penetriert zu werden.

But the fact that it is shameful to be penetrated by an equal man is comparable.

Gleichgestellt ist der Punkt.

The point is equalized.

Und es ist eben ein Akt des Angriffs.

And it is indeed an act of aggression.

Den Mitbürger zu penetrieren.

To penetrate the fellow citizen.

Also darum geht es.

That's what it's all about.

Es geht weder um sexuelle Orientierung, noch um Partnerschaft, wie wir heute ja diskutieren, wenn wir darüber reden.

It is not about sexual orientation, nor about partnership, as we are discussing today when we talk about it.

Es geht rein um gleichgeschlechtliche Akte, die unter dieser Rücksicht betrachtet und dann eben auch bewertet werden.

It is solely about same-sex acts, which are considered and then evaluated from this perspective.

Es geht also überhaupt nie um eine Liebesbeziehung in diesem Kontext.

So it's never about a romantic relationship in this context.

Sondern stets, und bisweilen mit Gewalt verbunden, nicht immer,

But always, and sometimes associated with violence, not always,

aber es geht um Machtdemonstration.

but it is about a demonstration of power.

Und der penetrierende Teil ist der überlegene, männliche Teil.

And the penetrating part is the superior, male part.

Und der unterlegene ist eben der weibliche Teil.

And the one who is defeated is indeed the female part.

Und weil das eben dann der Mann ist, der den weiblichen Teil übernimmt, ist das eben eine Sache von Schämung.

And because this is basically the man who takes on the feminine role, it is indeed a matter of shame.

Und insofern auch Gewalt, wenn das gewaltsam passiert.

And insofar as it is also violence when it happens violently.

Jetzt zum Kontext von unserem Leviticus 18.

Now to the context of our Leviticus 18.

Was steht da im Hintergrund?

What does it say in the background?

Ich habe Ihnen den ganzen Zusammenhang hier.

I have the entire context here for you.

Und das ist ja schon interessant.

And that is already interesting.

Da steht, du sollst nicht zu einer Frau gehen, solange sie ihren Blutfluss hat.

It says that you should not go to a woman as long as she has her flow of blood.

Also man soll nicht mit einer menstruierenden Frau Geschlechtsverkehr haben.

So one should not have sexual intercourse with a menstruating woman.

Dann Ehebruch, zu der Frau deines Nächsten gehen.

Then adultery, going to your neighbor's wife.

Dann du sollst auch nicht eines deiner Kinder geben, dass es dem Moloch geweiht werde.

Then you shall not give any of your children to be devoted to Molech.

Dahinter steckt vermutlich, dass man Kinder nicht hat.

It is probably behind the fact that one does not have children.

Oder nicht als, wir würden heute sagen, Kindersoldaten oder Kinderarbeiter an heidnische Völker gibt.

Or rather, as we would today say, there are child soldiers or child laborers among pagan peoples.

Also vermutlich geht es nicht um Kinderopfer, sondern eher um Kinderarbeit, Kindersoldaten.

So it probably isn't about child sacrifice, but rather about child labor, child soldiers.

Und dann kommt das, du sollst nicht bei einem Mann liegen, wie bei einer Frau.

And then it comes to this, you should not lie with a man like you do with a woman.

Und dann kommt nicht bei einem Tier.

And then it doesn't happen to an animal.

Also man sieht, die Reihe dieser Schandtaten, die verboten werden,

So one can see, the series of these disgraceful acts that are being prohibited,

sind alle, wenn man das so zusammenfasst, sexuelles Verhalten, was eben außerhalb der Ehe ist.

are all, when summarized like that, sexual behavior that is outside of marriage.

Und damit, und das ist der springende Punkt, außerhalb der Zeugung von Nachkommenschaft.

And with that, and that is the crux of the matter, outside of the procreation of offspring.

Und so erklärt sich das auch die alte sementliche Forschung, die sagt,

And so it explains itself that the old semantic research states,

diese Texte entstehen in einer Situation, wo das Volk Israel im Exil ist,

these texts arise in a situation where the people of Israel are in exile,

als kleine Minderheit.

as a small minority.

Und natürlich der springende Punkt ist, dass man als Minderheit überlebt.

And of course, the crux of the matter is that one survives as a minority.

Und das geht eben vor allem auch durch Vermehrung.

And that mainly happens through reproduction.

Und deshalb wird eben alles sozusagen gebannt, tabuisiert, was dem widerspricht.

And that is why everything that contradicts this is, so to speak, banned and tabooed.

Es gibt noch eine neuere Theorie, was hier eben dieser Fall ist,

There is a newer theory about what this case is.

nicht bei einem Mann liegen, wie bei einer Frau.

not lying with a man, like with a woman.

Das sagt jemand, da geht es gar nicht um gleichgeschlechtlichen Verkehr,

That is said by someone for whom it’s not even about same-sex intercourse.

sondern da geht es darum, dass verboten wird,

but it's about banning,

dass eine Frau mit zwei Männern gleichzeitig parallel oder so Geschlechtsverkehr hat.

that a woman has sexual intercourse with two men simultaneously or something like that.

Warum?

Why?

Weil man dann nicht mehr nachverfolgen kann, wer der Vater ist.

Because then it can no longer be traced who the father is.

Und darum geht es.

And that's what it's about.

Es geht um die patriarchale Linie.

It's about the patriarchal line.

Aber insofern auch wieder im Grunde um den Erhalt der Familie oder eben des Volkes.

But in that respect, it ultimately revolves around the preservation of the family or indeed the people.

Und eben weder um irgendeine Form von Identität oder Partnerschaft.

And neither for any form of identity or partnership.

Heute könnte man sagen, verurteilt werden Formen sexuellen Verhaltens,

Today one could say that forms of sexual behavior are being condemned,

die die eigene Lustbefriedigung, wie auch immer,

the own gratification of desire, however it may be,

ob man das so sehen kann, über das Wohl der Gemeinschaft stellen

whether one can see it that way, prioritizing the welfare of the community

oder eben die soziale Dimension menschlicher Sexualität geringschätzen.

or simply underestimate the social dimension of human sexuality.

Auf der Ebene könnte man sich mit den Texten unterhalten.

On the level, one could converse with the texts.

Aber Sie merken, es liegt ja insgesamt unserer Zeit doch recht fern.

But you realize, it is quite far from our time overall.

Und Leviticus 20, die zweite Stelle, das kommt immer wieder vor.

And Leviticus 20, the second reference, comes up again and again.

Also tatsächlich bei religiösen Menschen.

So actually with religious people.

Todesstrafe.

Death penalty.

Ich habe neulich wieder gelesen, gerade die Katholiken und die Christen in den USA

I recently read again, especially the Catholics and the Christians in the USA.

sind mehrheitlich für Todesstrafe.

are predominantly in favor of the death penalty.

Und es kommt unter anderem daher, dass eben die Bibel bestimmte Dinge unter Todesstrafe

And it is partly because the Bible prescribes certain things under the penalty of death.

stellt und das wird dann sehr wörtlich genommen.

is set and that is then taken very literally.

Nun muss man aber sagen, hier geht es wohl nicht um Todesstrafe,

Now one must say, this is probably not about the death penalty,

sondern um Gottesstrafe.

but rather divine punishment.

Also die Vorstellung, dass die Tat in sich so ist,

So the idea that the act is inherently like that,

dass sie das Gott praktisch das bestraft.

that God practically punishes that.

Dass die Strafe in sich liegt.

That the punishment lies within itself.

Das werden wir dann bei Paulus auch nochmal sehen.

We will see that again with Paul as well.

Also nochmal Lebensumstände.

So again, living conditions.

Ziel der Verbote, Stärkung der eigenen Gemeinschaft,

The aim of the prohibitions is to strengthen the community.

doch möglichst große Nachkommenschaft.

but preferably large offspring.

Jetzt kommen wir zu den narrativen Passagen.

Now we come to the narrative passages.

Das Wort Sodomie ist vielleicht Älteren der Zuhörer noch bekannt.

The word sodomy may still be known to older listeners.

Das wurde lange eben mit Homosexualität in Verbindung gebracht

This was long associated with homosexuality.

und als solches auch bestraft.

and as such also punished.

Heute wird das eigentlich eher mit Zophilie gleichgesetzt.

Today, it is actually more equated with zoophilia.

Also Sexualität.

Also sexuality.

Also Sexualität mit Tieren.

Also sexuality with animals.

Wo kommt das Wort her?

Where does the word come from?

Es kommt von Sodom her.

It comes from Sodom.

Also die Stadt Sodom und Gomorra.

So the city of Sodom and Gomorrah.

Die Stadt, die eben der Inbegriff der verruchten Stadt ist,

The city that is the epitome of the wicked city,

die dann eben auch von Gott vernichtet wird und Lot flieht und so weiter.

which is then also destroyed by God, and Lot flees and so on.

Und als Beispiel, warum, was eben so furchtbar ist bei den Sodomiten,

And as an example of why what is so terrible about the Sodomites,

wird eben in Genesis 19 erzählt.

It is told in Genesis 19.

Ganz schreckliche Geschichte.

Completely terrible story.

Da kommen die Engel.

Here come the angels.

Und also sind dann Gäste bei Lot.

And so there are guests at Lot's place.

Und die Männer von Sodom, da wird dann in der Einheitsübersetzung,

And the men of Sodom, as it is then in the Common Translation,

das heißt es Leute, aber de facto sind es natürlich die Männer,

that means it's people, but in fact, it is of course the men,

die wollen, dass er diese Gäste rausgibt.

They want him to kick these guests out.

Und der Lot, ich weiß nicht, ob sie das schon mal wahrgenommen haben,

And the plumb line, I don't know if you have noticed this before,

der bietet ihnen ja seine Tochter an.

He is offering you his daughter.

Und die Engel verhüten gerade noch das Schlimmste.

And the angels are just managing to prevent the worst.

Also es geht darum, dass die Engel sich verhüten.

So it's about the angels guarding themselves.

Also es geht überhaupt nicht um Homosexualität.

So it’s not about homosexuality at all.

Es geht um gewaltsame Verletzung des Gastrechts.

It concerns violent violation of hospitality.

Und das ist ein Frevel.

And that is an abomination.

Dass da die Frau geopfert werden soll, das ist überhaupt nicht im Blick.

That the woman is to be sacrificed is not even being considered at all.

Und es passiert aber in dieser Parallelstelle Richtung 19

And it happens, however, in this parallel section towards 19.

ebenfalls eine ganz fürchterliche Stelle ähnlich,

also a completely dreadful place similar,

dass eben auch Gastrecht verletzt werden soll.

that hospitality rights are also to be violated.

Und der Mann dann,

And the man then,

die Frau des Leviten zwingt sich,

the wife of the Levite forces herself,

den da hinzugeben und die wird dann zu Tode gebracht

to add that there and it will then be killed.

durch eine Massenvergewaltigung.

through a mass rape.

Ja, Sie dürfen lesen, wie es weitergeht.

Yes, you may read how it continues.

Es ist ganz furchtbar und darauf gibt es einen großen Krieg.

It is absolutely terrible and there will be a great war because of it.

Und hier sieht man aber folgendes,

And here you can see the following,

was ja bis heute so ist im Krieg,

which is still the case in war today,

dass die Penetration Mittel zum Zweck der Erniedrigung ist.

that penetration is a means to the end of humiliation.

Es geht also keineswegs um Lustgewinn.

It is therefore not about gaining pleasure at all.

Es geht nicht um Homosexualität.

It's not about homosexuality.

Es geht um gewaltsame Unterdrückung von Fremden.

It is about the violent repression of foreigners.

Und es ist nochmal für heutige Sicht völlig unverständlich,

And it is completely incomprehensible from today's perspective again,

dass die physische Integrität von Mädchen und Frauen nicht zählt

that the physical integrity of girls and women does not count

oder weniger als jene von Männern.

or less than those of men.

Die sind ja beide bereit, ihre Töchter oder Frau zu opfern.

They are both willing to sacrifice their daughters or wives.

Das ist Antike.

That is antiquity.

Ja, und insofern, dass gerade das,

Yes, and insofar as that,

was immer noch im Katechismus steht,

whatever is still in the catechism,

ist einfach nur anachronistisch.

is simply anachronistic.

Jetzt David und Jonathan, ja, mehr als Freunde.

Now David and Jonathan, yes, more than friends.

Im Alten Testament ist es wohl nicht so zu entnehmen.

In the Old Testament, it is probably not to be inferred that way.

Aber die Erzählung ist so offen,

But the narrative is so open,

dass man in diese Beziehung zwischen Jonathan und seinem Freund,

that one is in this relationship between Jonathan and his friend,

also David und Jonathan,

so David and Jonathan,

diese katholische Komponente reinlegen kann.

can incorporate this Catholic component.

Ja, das ist immer wieder geschehen.

Und der Text ist auch nicht wirklich dagegen.

Aber es geht nicht um eine Beziehung direkt, ja.

Ja, hier habe ich nochmal den Katechismus.

KKK ist der Katechismus der katholischen Kirche.

The CCC is the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

Und da sieht man noch,

dass eben gestützt auf der Heiligen Schrift,

bis 19, ja, das ist unsere Sodom-Geschichte,

up to 19, yes, that is our Sodom story,

die neutestamentlichen Stellen kommen gleich,

hat die kirchliche Überlieferung stets erklärt,

dass die homosexuellen Handlungen in sich nicht in Ordnung sind.

Und hier steht mit Blick auf Leviticus 18,

dass diese Menschen aus dem Volk ausgestoßen werden,

that these people are cast out from the community,

wo ich ja gesagt habe, das stimmt so auch historisch wohl nicht.

Where I said yes, that is historically not quite accurate.

Also man kann nur hoffen, dass der Katechismus,

wie bei der Todesstrafe hier, bald geändert wird.

Damit kann ich als Bibelwissenschaftler festhalten,

findet im Alten Testament kein Argument,

weil man das Konzept ja überhaupt nicht kennt, ja.

Eine Verurteilung homosexuell veranlagter Menschen zur Enthaltsamkeit

A condemnation of homosexual individuals to abstinence.

kann sich eben so wenig aus dem Alten Testament ableiten.

can likewise not be derived from the Old Testament.

Und die gesellschaftliche Diskriminierung

And the societal discrimination

oder gar strafrechtliche Verfolgung,

or even criminal prosecution,

und das sagt übrigens auch der Katechismus schon,

and by the way, the catechism says that too,

also das ist schon im Katechismus auch klar,

so that is already clear in the catechism as well,

unbarmherzig und ein Verbrechen gegen die Menschenwürde.

merciless and a crime against human dignity.

Der Katechismus stellt sich klar gegen Verfolgung und Diskriminierung.

The catechism clearly opposes persecution and discrimination.

Aber er sagt eben immer noch, dass der Akt selber nicht gut sei.

But he still says that the act itself is not good.

Das ist also jetzt die Basis.

So this is now the basis.

Also ich gehe jetzt relativ flott durch,

So I'm going through it relatively quickly now,

weil ich habe einiges an Stoff und ich finde es auch interessant

because I have quite a bit of material and I also find it interesting

und möchte Ihnen so viel wie möglich da auch mitteilen.

Jetzt kommen wir zum Neuen Testament.

Now we come to the New Testament.

Gleiche Frage.

Same question.

Kennt und verurteilt das Neue Testament Homosexualität.

Does the New Testament know and condemn homosexuality?

Die Antwort ist, es wird gleich sein,

The answer is, it will be the same.

aber etwas differenzierter.

but a bit more differentiated.

Literatur gibt es ja jede Menge.

There is a lot of literature.

Also ich habe Ihnen William Lauder,
