Aber jetzt habe ich mich nur mal mit einem Thema jetzt doch länger beschäftigt

Da möchte ich auch ein bisschen sagen, wie es jetzt zu diesem Überthema, was auf Erden überhaupt kam.

I would like to say a little about how we came to this overarching theme that arose on Earth.

Wir fanden, das war eine ganz clevere Idee, um verschiedene Interessen miteinander ins Gespräch zu bringen.

We thought it was a very clever idea to bring different interests into conversation with each other.

Schon vom letzten Forum, aber auch dem letzten Confusion an, war das ökologische Thema

als natürlich die zentrale Herausforderung der Gegenwart irgendwie präsent.

Wollten wir gerne weiterführen, wir hatten das Gefühl, es gibt noch viel zu machen und zu sagen

und sich auszutauschen.

Und dann das Thema Gastlichkeit, was mir eben am Herzen liegt,

And then there's the topic of hospitality, which is close to my heart.

Konflikte um Identität, Frage der Fremdheit und des Fremdseins,

Conflicts about identity, the question of strangeness and being an outsider,

die Frage nach einer Gabe, die die Kreisläufe der Ökonomie sprengt,

the question of a gift that transcends the cycles of the economy,

die Frage des Umgangs mit sozialen Konflikten,

the question of how to deal with social conflicts,

die Frage von Flucht und Migration

the question of flight and migration

und die Frage, wie zukünftige Gemeinschaften,

and the question of how future communities,

wie zukünftige Gemeinschaftsformen aussehen könnten.

Und ich bin ein Gast auf Erden als Motto, da kommen ja irgendwie so existenzielle,

And I am a guest on Earth as a motto, somehow that brings up existential topics.

ganz persönliche, aber auch religiöse Klänge mit rein.

completely personal, but also religious tones included.

So die Frage, irgendwie nie und nirgends ganz verwurzelt zu sein,

So the question is to never be completely rooted anywhere.

irgendwie abzuhängen von einer Zuwendung, die man sich selbst nicht garantieren kann,

somehow depending on a grant that one cannot guarantee for oneself,

eine Lebensform zu leben, die auf der einen Seite gefährdet ist

to live a form of life that is endangered on one side

und auf der anderen Seite

and on the other side

ganz frei oder so merkwürdig frei, gastfrei eben.

Und das alles mit dem Blick auf den Gott, der sich selbst immer wieder in dieses Spiel zwischen Gast und Gastgeber hineinbegibt,

And all of this with the gaze upon the God who continually immerses Himself in this game between guest and host.

auf verschiedenen Seiten, manchmal als großzügiger Gastgeber,

on different occasions, sometimes as a generous host,

mal als verletzlicher Gast oder Fremder, der Aufnahme braucht.

sometimes as a vulnerable guest or stranger who needs to be welcomed.

Ich fand den Namen Wabern so schön, weil ich hatte es mit dem Thema Fluidität und das wabert ja auch ganz viel.

I found the name Wabern so beautiful because it relates to the theme of fluidity, and that wavers a lot as well.

Und damals war einer der Themenstränge, ich kann mich gar nicht an alles erinnern,

And back then, one of the themes, I can't remember everything,

aber eine der Themenstränge, über die wir gesprochen haben, war die sogenannte fluide Moderne.

But one of the themes we discussed was the so-called liquid modernity.

Im Prinzip kannst du das schnell erzählen. Ja, jetzt in der Spätmoderne, viele Gewissheiten werden aufgelöst,

In principle, you can tell this quickly. Yes, now in late modernity, many certainties are dissolving,

viele Institutionen werden brüchig, menschliche Beziehungen irgendwie fluider, was auch immer das heißt, gestaltet.

Many institutions are becoming fragile, human relationships somehow more fluid, whatever that means.

Und wie kann in diesem Zusammenhang eine christliche Lebensform aussehen,

And how can a Christian way of life look like in this context,

wie kann Solidarität gelebt werden und so weiter und so fort.

How can solidarity be lived out, and so on and so forth.

Und eine der vorläufigen Antworten, die wir damals formuliert haben,

And one of the preliminary answers we formulated back then,

war die Frage, ob es nicht vielleicht die Lebensform des Gastgebers oder des Gastes,

was the question of whether it might be the lifestyle of the host or the guest,

die Lebensform der Gastlichkeit sein könnte, die darauf eine gute Antwort wäre.

the way of life of hospitality could be, which would be a good response to that.

Und im Rückblick muss ich auch dazu noch sagen, dass Confusion selber für mich so ein gastlicher Ort war.

And in retrospect, I must also say that Confusion was such a welcoming place for me.

Also, Simon de Vries, damals gab es so ein ganzes Blog-Netzwerk, damals haben Leute noch gebloggt,

und er hatte das mal so zusammengefasst und dachte, das hat uns damals ganz gut getroffen.

And he had once summarized it like this and thought that it suited us quite well back then.

Das, was mir selbst wichtig ist, das kann ich bedenkenlos sagen,

weil die anderen etwas aus meiner Geschichte lernen möchten.

Das, was ich an Fragen und Zweifeln habe, ist, dass ich mich nicht nur für mich selbst interessiere,

Und das ist doch ganz klasse, wenn Confusion so etwas sein kann.

And that's really great, if confusion can be something like that.

Man sollte keine Ideale liefern.

One should not provide ideals.

Aber ich fühle im Nachhinein, das betraf so ein bisschen das,

But I feel in hindsight, that was somewhat related to that.

was ich mit einem gastlichen Ort verbinde, nämlich, dass man Raum hat zum Atmen.

What I connect with a welcoming place is the fact that there is room to breathe.

Weder eine ganz erdrückende, ganz enge Gemeinschaft, die für alle Ewigkeit angestrebt wird,

Neither a completely stifling, very close community that is aspired to for all eternity,

noch ein indifferentes Nebeneinander.

yet another indifferent coexistence.

Und ich hoffe, das kann man ja natürlich nur hoffen,

And I hope, one can of course only hope,

dass vielleicht manche von euch über diese Confusion etwas Ähnliches erzählen können.

that maybe some of you can tell something similar about this confusion.

Und für mich war diese Confusion der Beginn eines Weges,

And for me, this confusion was the beginning of a journey,

dass ich mich mit diesem Thema Gastlichkeit länger auseinandergesetzt habe.

that I have dealt with the topic of hospitality for a longer period of time.

Und länger heißt sechs Jahre.

And longer means six years.

Das heißt, ich habe da meine Doktorarbeit drüber geschrieben, viel gelesen,

That means I wrote my doctoral thesis about it, read a lot,

aber ich war ja auch immer selber beteiligt,

but I was always involved myself,

um gastliche Orte zu entwickeln und zu entwerfen mit meiner Arbeit in diesem Wohnheim.

to develop and design hospitable places with my work in this residence.

Und habe alle möglichen Krisen und Zusammenbrüche miterlebt.

And have witnessed all sorts of crises and collapses.

Also das passt dann auch schon noch dazu.

So that fits in well too.

Und mir schien das so, wenn ich das herunterbreche,

And it seemed to me that if I break it down,

dann würde ich sagen, es soll bei diesem Thema Gastlichkeit nicht nur darum gehen,

then I would say that when it comes to the topic of hospitality, it should not only be about...

dass wir jetzt einen moralischen Appell machen, so nach dem Motto, seid aber mehr gastlich.

that we are now making a moral appeal, along the lines of, be more hospitable.

Ich weiß noch, ich habe mal das Thema in der Gemeinde präsentiert, Gastlichkeit.

I remember I once presented the topic in the community, hospitality.

Und danach kam ganz traurig eine Frau, die im Begrüßungsteam der Gemeinde war,

And then a very sad woman came, who was in the welcoming team of the community,

auf mich zu, ganz schuldbewusst, und sagte,

came up to me, looking very guilty, and said,

wir versuchen doch schon alles, den Menschen irgendwie einen guten Ort zu gestalten.

We are already trying everything to create a good place for people in some way.

Und das möchte ich gar nicht, das ist gar nicht sozusagen mein Anliegen an der Stelle,

And I don't want that at all; that's not, so to speak, my concern in this context.

so einen moralischen Impuls zu setzen oder über besondere Events zu reden.

to set such a moral impulse or to talk about special events.

Sondern für mich ist Gastlichkeit auch ein Thema, was unser ganzes soziales Leben durchzieht

But for me, hospitality is also a theme that runs through our entire social life.

und welches auch zum Kern des christlichen Glaubens gehört.

and which is also part of the core of the Christian faith.

Ich würde sagen, Gastlichkeit ist ein Bild davon,

I would say that hospitality is a picture of that,

wie wir Heil und Unheil erfahren.

how we experience healing and harm.

Ja, also das Bild vom Tisch, an dem alle Platz haben,

Yes, so the picture of the table where everyone has a place,

spricht irgendwie etwas in uns an, das bei ganz vielen Resonanz auslöst.

It somehow speaks to something within us that resonates with many.

Aber vielleicht auch, weil so viele andere Bilder mit auftauchen.

But perhaps also because so many other images appear as well.

Bilder von einer eigentümlichen Einsamkeit, die sich manchmal beim Tisch einstellt,

Images of a peculiar loneliness that sometimes settles at the table,

wenn man nichts zu sagen hat.

when one has nothing to say.

Die vielen Gehässigkeiten und Konflikte, die so irgendwann auf den Tisch kommen.

The many resentments and conflicts that will eventually come to the surface.

Bilder davon, dass vielleicht nicht alle,

Images of the fact that perhaps not all,

die an einem Tisch Platz finden und manche leider draußen bleiben müssen.

those who find a seat at a table and some unfortunately have to stay outside.

Bilder von absurd langen Verhandlungstischen,

Images of absurdly long negotiation tables,

die nur verdecken, dass es nichts mehr zu verhandeln gibt und nur die Waffen reden.

that only disguise the fact that there is nothing left to negotiate and only weapons are speaking.

Aber auch die Frage, haben nicht diese Momente, in denen das Leben gut funktioniert,

But also the question, don't these moments when life works well,

immer irgendeinen Bezug zur Gastlichkeit?

Always some reference to hospitality?

Mit gastlichen Begegnungen, wenn man so will.

With hospitable encounters, if you will.

Dann aber auch die Frage, ist nicht irgendwie die Geschichte Gottes mit den Menschen

Then the question is raised, is God's history with mankind not somehow

gut durch diese Brille der Gastlichkeit zu betrachten?

Well observed through this lens of hospitality?

Also, dass im Alten Testament Gott als Schutzmacht der Schutzlosen aufgerufen wird.

So, that in the Old Testament God is invoked as the protective power of the helpless.

Dass der Tempel als Zentrum der göttlichen Gastlichkeit dargestellt wird.

That the temple is portrayed as the center of divine hospitality.

Das gab es auch schon.

That has happened before as well.

Was aber schon im Alten Testament schon eher ungewöhnlich ist in der Umwelt,

What is already unusual in the environment in the Old Testament,

ist ihr Gedanke, als der Tempel zerstört wird,

is her thought when the temple is destroyed,

dass Gott mit ins Exil geht, dass er heimatlos wird.

that God goes into exile with us, that He becomes homeless.

Gott selbst zeigt sich in wechselnden Orten.

God himself reveals himself in changing places.

Gott selbst zeigt sich in wechselnden Rollen als Gast, Gastgeber und als Fremder.

God himself presents himself in changing roles as a guest, host, and as a stranger.

Gegenwärtige Herausforderungen haben mit Gastlichkeit zu tun.

Current challenges are related to hospitality.

Man kann jetzt natürlich ganz viel über Flucht und Asyl reden.

One can certainly talk a lot about flight and asylum now.

Wenn man noch andere Themen sucht, dann kann man sich überlegen,

If you are looking for other topics, you can consider,

was hat eigentlich die Corona-Pandemie,

what actually does the Corona pandemic,

die wie so ein Riss durch unsere soziale Welt geht,

that runs like a tear through our social world,

gerade damit zu tun, dass sie auch bestimmte Möglichkeiten der Gastlichkeit beschränkt hat.

just that it has also restricted certain opportunities for hospitality.

Bei uns im Wohnheim war es so, wir konnten dann einfach keine Gäste mehr haben.

In our dormitory, it was such that we simply could no longer have guests.

Man konnte den Leuten sagen, seid ungastlich.

One could tell the people, be inhospitable.

Das ist nicht so einfach, wenn man fünf Jahre vorher die ganze Zeit etwas anderes erzählt hat.

It's not so easy when you've been telling a completely different story for five years.

Das geht auch nicht spurlos an Communities vorüber.

This does not go unnoticed by communities either.

Aber auch verbunden mit der Frage, kommt jetzt vielleicht ein Zeitalter des großen Rückzugs

But also connected with the question, is a great era of withdrawal perhaps now approaching?

aus den Herausforderungen des sozialen Lebens,

from the challenges of social life,

wo sich alle so ein bisschen in ein Schneckenhaus wieder zurückziehen,

where everyone retreats a bit back into their shell,

so eine Art neues Biedermeier, wo man also merkt,

a kind of new Biedermeier, where one can notice,

man hat gar nicht mehr die Kraft für Gastlichkeit.

One no longer has the strength for hospitality.

Und natürlich die Frage Gastlichkeit und Sozialformen des Christentums.

And of course the question of hospitality and social forms of Christianity.

Christentum hat irgendwas mit Gemeinschaft zu tun.

Christianity has something to do with community.

Und es ist immer unklarer, was das eigentlich heißt.

And it is becoming increasingly unclear what that actually means.

Was ist Gemeinschaft? Wie kann das aussehen,

What is community? What can that look like?

wenn man damit nicht sozusagen Sticklichkeit und Enge allein verbinden möchte?

if one does not want to associate it solely with stickiness and narrowness?

Und mir geht es darum, zu zeigen, dass es Gastlichkeit nicht nur eine Zutat ist

And for me, it is about showing that hospitality is not just an ingredient.

zu einer bestehenden Gemeinschaft,

to an existing community,

aber dass es Gemeinschaften gibt, die dann auch noch gastlich sind.

but that there are communities that are also hospitable.

Sozusagen als Einheit.

So to speak, as a unit.

Das ist nicht meine Aufgabe,

That is not my task.

sondern dass Gemeinschaft aus Gastlichkeit entstehen kann.

but that community can arise from hospitality.

Also es ist anders, um zu denken.

So it is different to think.

Und das können wir uns auch im Laufe der Tage dann angucken.

Ich möchte es ein bisschen konkreter machen und eine Geschichte erzählen.

Und die hatte aus Versehen, glaube ich, eine Kirche gegründet.

And I think she accidentally founded a church.

Irgendwie im urbanen Milieu mit allerlei lustigen Gestalten,

Somehow in the urban environment with all sorts of funny characters,

die sich sonst nicht so in Kirchen finden.

that are otherwise not commonly found in churches.

Allerdings, also was weiß ich, aus der LGBTQ-Bewegung und aus verschiedenen Künstlerszenen.

However, I mean, from the LGBTQ movement and from various artist scenes.

Aber es waren halt nur 25.

But there were only 25.

Und die Geschichte geht so weiter.

And the story goes on like this.

Ja, sie erzählt das in ihrem Buch unter der Überschrift

Yes, she tells this in her book under the heading

»Anders auf die falsche Art«

"Different in the wrong way"

und setzt da so ein Motto drüber, Hebräer 13, Vers 2.

and puts a motto over it, Hebrews 13, verse 2.

»Gastfrei zu sein, vergesst nicht, denn dadurch haben einige ohne ihr Wissen Engel geherbergt.«

"Do not forget to be hospitable, for by doing so some have unwittingly hosted angels."

Und sie erzählt das so, sie, warum sie kein Wachstum haben,

And she tells it like this, she, why they don't have growth,

interpretiert das so,

interpret it like this,

»Wenn es eine der zentralen Werte ist,

"If it is one of the central values,"

eine der zentralen Botschaften der Kirche ist,

one of the central messages of the Church is,

dass Jesus uns auffordert, zu ihm zu kommen und zu sterben,

that Jesus urges us to come to Him and to die,

in Klammern unserem Selbst abzusterben, unserem alten Denken abzusterben,

und den destabilisierenden Gedanken auszuleben,

and to express the destabilizing thoughts,

dass Jesus dadurch erfahrbar wird, dass wir Fremde willkommen heißen,

that Jesus becomes accessible through our welcoming of strangers,

sind in der Regel nicht durch exklusives Wachstum entzeichnet.«

"Are typically not marked by exclusive growth."

So stellt sich das vor.

That's how it is imagined.

Also sozusagen die Idee ist, weil wir so gastlich sind, kommt niemand.

So the idea is, because we are so hospitable, no one comes.

Was interessant ist.

What is interesting.

Aber irgendwie, so eine tätowierte Pastorin

But somehow, a tattooed pastor.

kommt ja doch auf den Aufmerksamkeitsmärkten der Gegenwart gut an.

It is indeed well received in the attention markets of the present.

Und sie konnte dann...

And she could then...

Es gab so eine große Titelstory über eine Predigt, die sie gehalten hat.

There was such a big headline story about a sermon she gave.

Und irgendwie zwei Wochen später waren ganz, ganz viele neue Leute da.

And somehow two weeks later there were a lot of new people there.

Allerdings fand sie das nicht so doll,

However, she didn't think it was that great,

weil es waren die falschen Leute.

because it was the wrong people.

Es waren nämlich...

There were, namely...

Leute aus der bürgerlichen Mittelschicht, aus dem Umland.

People from the middle-class bourgeoisie, from the outskirts.

Und das muss ich jetzt ausführlich zitieren,

And I need to quote this in detail now,

weil ich glaube, man kann an diesem Zitat ganz viel sehen,

because I believe that you can see a lot in this quote,

warum Gastlichkeit in gewisse Konflikte auch führt.

why hospitality can also lead to certain conflicts.

Sie sagt, »Meine Leute lesen keine Zeitung.

She says, "My people don't read the newspaper."

Wir beziehen unsere Nachrichten online oder aus dem Radio.

We get our news online or from the radio.

Leute, die Zeitung lesen, sind 50 Jahre alt und wohnen in den Foren.

People who read newspapers are 50 years old and live in the forums.

Und es waren genau solche Leute, die jetzt bei uns auftauchten.

And it was exactly such people who now appeared among us.

Es war grauenhaft, als die Wochen des Frühsemorns vergingen,

It was dreadful as the weeks of early spring passed.

wie es mir immer schwerer, Leute freundlich willkommen zu heißen,

it is becoming increasingly difficult for me to warmly welcome people,

die im Gegensatz zu uns anderen jederzeit in eine ganz normale protestantische Gemeinde gehen können

which, unlike us, can go to a completely normal Protestant church at any time

und sich in einem Raum voller Leute finden, die so aussehen wie sie.

and find themselves in a room full of people who look just like them.

Dann erzählt sie so ein bisschen, was ihr Stil ist und was sie mit dieser Kirche wollte.

Then she talks a little about what her style is and what she wanted with this church.

Und dann sagte sie, »Und nun kamen ein Haufen Leute, Baby-Boomers, die Docker trugen,

And then she said, "And now a bunch of people came, baby boomers, who were wearing dockers,

und bei Applebee's aßen, aus den Vororten angefahren,

and ate at Applebee's, having driven in from the suburbs,

um unsere Gottesdienste zu konsumieren, weil sie schick waren

to consume our services because they were stylish

und viel cooler und authentischer als alles, was sie selbst zustande brachten.

and much cooler and more authentic than anything they could come up with themselves.

Meine kostbare kleine Indie-Boutique von einer Gemeinde wurde behandelt wie ein Discounter.

My precious little indie boutique from a community was treated like a discount store.

Und ich hatte fürchterliche Angst, die krassen ausgegrenzten Leute,

And I was terribly afraid of the drastically marginalized people,

die wir bisher immer angezogen hatten, würden nun kommen,

the ones we had always attracted before would now come,

einen Haufen Leute erblicken, die aussahen wie ihre Eltern und denken, das ist nichts für mich.«

"to see a bunch of people who looked like their parents and think, this is not for me."

Also man sieht so auf der einen Seite so das Selbstverständnis,

So one can see on the one hand the self-understanding,

wir möchten gastlich sein, einfach radikal.

We want to be hospitable, simply radical.

Und auf der anderen Seite merkt man doch so eine komische, ungastliche Selbstbehauptung.

And on the other hand, one notices such a strange, inhospitable self-assertion.

Das ist unser Markenkern, der wird jetzt hier gefährdet.

This is our brand essence, which is now being jeopardized here.

Wir werden nicht mehr wahrnehmbar auf dem religiösen Markt und müssen uns jetzt hier zur Werbe setzen.

We are no longer perceivable in the religious market and now have to position ourselves for advertising here.

Und die Metaphorik, die sie benutzt, um diesen Wandel, den sie dann selber beschreibt, deutlich zu machen,

And the metaphors she uses to clarify this change that she then describes,

zu einer Öffnung zu den anderen, ist die Metaphorik des neuen Herzens.

The metaphor of the new heart is one of opening up to others.
