Skilled workers are missing almost everywhere. In healthcare and nursing, in the construction industry, in trades, and also in IT.

Im Jahr 2023 sind wohl fast 600.000 Stellen nicht besetzt worden.

In 2023, almost 600,000 positions were likely left unfilled.

Für viele deutsche Unternehmen bedeutet das, eigentlich könnten sie mehr produzieren, doch es fehlen oft Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeiter.

For many German companies, this means that they could actually produce more, but they often lack employees.

Laut eines Berichts des Arbeitgebernahen Instituts der deutschen Wirtschaft verliert die deutsche Wirtschaft dadurch in diesem Jahr fast 50 Milliarden Euro.

According to a report by the employer-affiliated Institute of the German Economy, the German economy is losing nearly 50 billion euros this year as a result.

In den kommenden drei Jahren könnten diese Ausfälle demnach noch auf fast 75 Milliarden Euro pro Jahr ansteigen.

In the next three years, these losses could rise to almost 75 billion euros per year.

Und es fehlt nicht nur an Fachkräften. Arbeitskräfte fehlen auf allen Ebenen.

And it's not just a lack of skilled workers. There is a shortage of labor at all levels.

In der ganz einfachen Logik müsste es ja in der aktuellen wirtschaftlichen Krise eigentlich eine Entspannung beim Thema Arbeitskräftemangel geben.

In simple logic, there should actually be a relaxation regarding the issue of labor shortages in the current economic crisis.

Das scheint aber nicht so zu sein, oder?

That doesn't seem to be the case, does it?

Ja, das ist eine ganz interessante Beobachtung.

Yes, that is quite an interesting observation.

Denn es gilt ja eigentlich die ganz simple Logik, wenn es der Wirtschaft schlecht geht, dann geht die Arbeitslosigkeit hoch.

Because it is actually a very simple logic: when the economy is doing poorly, unemployment rises.

Und dann können solche Dinge passieren wie das, was wir zum Beispiel vor gut 20 Jahren entdeckten.

And then such things can happen like what we discovered, for example, about 20 years ago.

Als die Arbeitslosigkeit hierzulande ungefähr bei 10% lag.

When unemployment was around 10% here.

Jetzt geht die Arbeitslosigkeit auch hoch.

Now unemployment is also rising.

Und natürlich ist das eine Folge der großen wirtschaftlichen Schwäche in Deutschland.

And of course, this is a consequence of the great economic weakness in Germany.

Aber eigentlich viel weniger, als man das erwarten würde, wenn man eben auf die Vergangenheit schaut.

But actually much less than one would expect when looking at the past.

Und der Grund dafür ist nicht so sehr, dass die Unternehmen zögerlich sind,

And the reason for this is not so much that companies are hesitant,

sondern es liegt daran, dass tatsächlich der Mensch knapp wird.

but it is due to the fact that people are actually becoming scarce.

Warum wird denn der Mensch knapp?

Why is humanity becoming scarce?

Ja, das ist ein ganz langer Trend.

Yes, that is a very long trend.

Und das ist nicht ein Trend, der jetzt irgendwie in den letzten 5 Jahren eingesetzt hat oder 10 Jahren.

And this is not a trend that has started in the last 5 years or 10 years.

Sondern das ist im Grunde genommen ein Trend, der eingesetzt hat mit dem steigenden Wohlstand.

But this is essentially a trend that has emerged with increasing prosperity.

Wir können sogar ganz weit zurückgehen und sagen, es hat eingesetzt mit dem Beginn der industriellen Revolution.

We can even go back a long way and say it started with the beginning of the industrial revolution.

Als auf einmal der Mensch den Weg gefunden hat aus der Armutsfalle.

When suddenly the person has found the way out of the trap of poverty.

Man muss sich das so vorstellen, dass die Menschen vor 250 Jahren eigentlich die meiste Zeit nur gearbeitet haben.

One must imagine it like this: that people 250 years ago actually spent most of their time just working.

Eine durchschnittliche Lebenserwartung hatten von 35 Jahren.

The average life expectancy was 35 years.

Dass die Kindersterblichkeit unglaublich hoch war.

That child mortality was incredibly high.

Und Familien im Durchschnitt so 5, 6 Kinder bekommen haben.

And families on average had about 5 or 6 children.

Und das hat sich ja zum Glück geändert.

And that has thankfully changed.

Und es haben sich viele Dinge geändert.

And many things have changed.

Zum einen ist die Lebenserwartung deutlich gestiegen.

On one hand, life expectancy has clearly increased.

Es sind nicht mehr so viele Kinder gestorben.

Not as many children have died anymore.

Zum anderen haben sich aber auch die Aussichten auf Wohlstand deutlich verbessert.

On the other hand, the prospects for prosperity have also significantly improved.

Aber auch nur dann, wenn ich mich vernünftig habe ausbilden lasse.

But only if I have been properly trained.

So und all diese Dinge zusammen, und wir können nochmal im Detail darüber sprechen,

So, all these things together, and we can talk about it in detail again.

aber haben dazu geführt, dass...

but have led to the fact that...

dass die Geburtenrate langsam angefangen hat abzunehmen.

that the birth rate has started to decline slowly.

Wie gesagt, die lag eigentlich immer in der Menschheitsgeschichte irgendwo so auf diesem hohen Level.

As I said, it has always been somewhere at this high level in human history.

Bei 5 oder 6 Kindern pro Frau.

With 5 or 6 children per woman.

Und liegt heute, das muss man sich mal auf der Zunge zergehen lassen,

And today, one must let that sink in,

in Deutschland nur noch bei 1,3 Kindern pro Frau.

in Germany only 1.3 children per woman.

Also ein riesiger Rückgang.

So a huge decline.

Was bedeutet jetzt 1,3 Geburten pro Frau?

What does 1.3 births per woman mean now?

Das bedeutet, dass wir nicht mehr ausreichend Kinder bekommen,

This means that we are no longer getting enough children.

um langfristig die Bevölkerung stabil zu halten.

to stabilize the population in the long term.

Denn um eine Bevölkerung stabil zu halten,

Because in order to keep a population stable,

braucht man ungefähr eine Geburtenrate von 2,1 Kindern pro Frau.

One needs an average birth rate of about 2.1 children per woman.

Mit diesen 1,3 liegen wir deutlich darunter.

With this 1.3, we are clearly below.

Übrigens nicht nur wir in Deutschland, sondern man muss sagen,

By the way, not only we in Germany, but one must say,

alle Länder in Europa, alle Länder in Nordamerika und auch die großen Länder in Asien.

all countries in Europe, all countries in North America, and also the large countries in Asia.

Also China, Japan und neuerdings auch Indien.

So China, Japan, and more recently also India.

Was sind denn da mögliche Ansätze, um, ich sag mal, Lösungen zu finden?

What might be possible approaches to find, let's say, solutions?

Ja, was häufig diskutiert wird, ist, wir müssen wieder mehr Kinder bekommen.

Yes, what is often discussed is that we need to have more children again.

So einfach ist es ja nicht.

It's not that simple.

Naja, also theoretisch ist das natürlich eine Lösung.

Well, theoretically, that's obviously a solution.

Übrigens eine Lösung, die natürlich nur sehr langfristig greift.

By the way, a solution that of course only works in the very long term.

Denn die Geburtenraten von heute legen ja die Situation auf dem Arbeitsmarkt in 20, 25 Jahren an.

For the birth rates of today will determine the situation on the labor market in 20, 25 years.

Also wir wissen im Grunde genommen jetzt schon,

So we basically already know now,

wie die demografische Entwicklung sich in den nächsten zwei Jahrzehnten entwickeln wird.

how the demographic development will evolve in the next two decades.

Nein, das ist keine Lösung.

No, that is not a solution.

Und um nochmal eben auf die Gründe zurückzukommen,

And to return briefly to the reasons,

die niedrigen Geburtenraten sind ja Zeichen von ganz vielen guten Dingen, die passieren.

The low birth rates are indeed signs of many good things happening.

Von mehr Wohlstand, von mehr Bildungsgerechtigkeit, gerade von jungen Mädchen und von Frauen.

About more prosperity, about more educational equity, especially for young girls and women.

Insofern, das ist nicht etwas, das man zurückdrehen kann.

In that sense, that is not something that can be reversed.

Das haben viele Länder versucht und sind damit gescheitert.

Many countries have tried that and have failed.

Nein, wir müssen andere Dinge tun.

No, we have to do other things.

Das eine ist, wir müssen smarter arbeiten.

One thing is, we need to work smarter.

Wenn wir nicht mehr mehr Menschen werden, und das ist in Deutschland der Fall,

If we no longer become more people, and that is the case in Germany,

wir haben die absolute Höchstgrenze der Bevölkerung erreicht.

We have reached the absolute maximum limit of the population.

Wenn nicht mehr mehr Menschen arbeiten können, dann müssen wir smarter arbeiten.

If fewer people can work, then we need to work smarter.

Und smarter arbeiten bedeutet, dass wir Maschinen, Technologien so einsetzen,

And working smarter means that we use machines and technologies in such a way,

dass sie uns so bei der Arbeit unterstützen,

that they support us so much in our work,

dass wir am Ende des Tages bei dem gleichen Input mehr herausbekommen.

that at the end of the day we get more out of the same input.

Die Volkswirte sprechen dann von Produktivitätsgewinnen

The economists then speak of productivity gains.

oder von einer steigenden Produktivität pro Kopf.

or from increasing productivity per capita.

Also da klopft natürlich ein paar Dinge an der Tür.

So there are definitely a few things knocking at the door.

Die künstliche Intelligenz klopft an der Tür, die Robotik klopft an der Tür.

Artificial intelligence is knocking at the door, robotics is knocking at the door.

All das sind Dinge, die dafür sorgen können, dass,

All of this is things that can ensure that,

auch wenn wir nicht mehr Menschen werden, dass wir mehr Dinge erledigen können.

even if we no longer become people, we will be able to accomplish more things.

Das ist eins.

That is one.

Und das zweite ist, wir können natürlich schon schauen,

And the second is, we can certainly take a look,

dass wir die Potenziale, die ja durchaus noch auf dem Arbeitsmarkt verfügbar sind, besser nutzen.

that we can make better use of the potentials that are indeed still available in the labor market.

Ich nenne einfach mal zwei Themen.

I'll just mention two topics.

Das eine ist die Erwerbsbeteiligung von Frauen.

One aspect is the participation of women in the labor force.

Die ist zwar relativ hoch, also die liegt ungefähr bei 80 Prozent.

It is relatively high, so it is around 80 percent.

Das ist fast auf Höhe der Männer.

That is almost at the level of the men.

Aber die Hälfte der Frauen in Deutschland arbeitet in Teilzeit.

But half of the women in Germany work part-time.

Und das ist der zweithöchste Wert in der EU.

And that is the second highest value in the EU.

Also besonders viele Frauen in Deutschland arbeiten, wenn sie arbeiten in Teilzeit.

Many women in Germany especially work part-time when they are employed.

Und die Gründe dafür sind ganz oft schlechte Kinderbetreuung,

And the reasons for this are often poor childcare,

überhaupt schlechte Betreuungsverhältnisse.

Overall poor care conditions.

Da müssen wir ran, damit wir diesen Menschen auch die Chance geben,

We need to get to work so that we can give these people the chance to...

also die Frauen, die es ja meistens betrifft, auch mehr arbeiten zu können.

So the women, who are mostly affected, can work more as well.

Und das letzte sind, wir müssen uns natürlich irgendwann auch darüber Gedanken machen,

And the last thing is, we naturally have to think about it at some point as well,

ob, wenn die Lebenserwartung so sehr steigt, wie sie es eben in den letzten Jahrzehnten getan hat,

if, as life expectancy has increased significantly in recent decades,

ob wir dann nicht auch länger arbeiten können.

if we then can't work longer as well.

Das heißt, ich fasse es mal ganz raff zusammen,

That means, I'll summarize it quite succinctly,

a technologische Mittel wie KI und ähnliche Sachen, Robotik haben Sie angesprochen,

You mentioned technological means like AI and similar things, robotics.

b geht es darum, Frauen aus dem, ich sage es mal so platt, westdeutschen Modell so ein bisschen rauszuholen,

It's about getting women out of, and I put it bluntly, the West German model a little bit.

aus der Teilzeitfalle und eben zu vollwertigen Arbeitnehmenden zu machen.

to get out of the part-time trap and turn them into full-fledged employees.

Und drittens dann, was Sie jetzt zuletzt angesprochen haben,

And thirdly, what you just mentioned.

möglicherweise eben auch länger arbeiten.

possibly also work longer.

Wenn man deutlich länger lebt, ist es vielleicht auch zumutbar, noch ein bisschen länger zu arbeiten.

If one lives significantly longer, it may also be reasonable to work a little longer.

Ja, vielleicht, Sie haben gesagt, vollwertige Frauen.

Yes, maybe, you said, whole women.

Ich glaube, jeder Mensch, der arbeitet, ist ein vollwertiger Mitarbeiter.

I believe that every person who works is a valuable employee.

Vollzeitig wäre vielleicht die richtigere Bezeichnung.

Fully-time might be the more accurate term.

Und bei den älteren Mitarbeitern, ja, und das haben wir auch gerade herausgefunden,

And with the older employees, yes, and we have just found that out too,

viele Menschen wünschen sich, dass sie länger arbeiten, auch über das Renteneintrittsalter hinaus.

Many people wish to work longer, even beyond retirement age.

Aber die Grundvoraussetzungen müssen dafür gegeben sein.

But the basic prerequisites must be in place for that.

Da sind natürlich solche Dinge wie, wie sieht das eigentlich steuerlich aus?

Of course, there are such things as, what does it actually look like from a tax perspective?

Wie sieht das mit meiner Rente aus?

How does my pension look?

Aber auch, vielleicht will ich dann eben nicht mehr in Vollzeit arbeiten,

But maybe I just don't want to work full time anymore.

sondern ich will langsam zurückstufen.

but I want to gradually step back.

Also da gibt es eine ganze Reihe von Dingen, die wir tun müssen.

So there are a whole bunch of things we need to do.

Was wir wissen ist,

What we know is,

die Menschen arbeiten gerne.

People like to work.

Viele Menschen, die heute in Teilzeit arbeiten,

Many people who work part-time today,

viele Frauen, die in Teilzeit arbeiten, würden gerne mehr arbeiten,

many women who work part-time would like to work more,

wenn die Betreuungssituation besser wäre.

if the care situation were better.

Viele Menschen, die ihr Renteneintrittsalter erreichen, würden gerne länger arbeiten,

Many people who reach their retirement age would like to work longer,

wenn man den Teil der Arbeit mehr flexibilisieren würde

if one would make that part of the work more flexible

und es auch tatsächlich die Rahmenbedingungen dafür schaffen würde.

and it would actually create the framework conditions for it.

Das sind alles Möglichkeiten, wir müssen sie nur anpacken.

These are all possibilities, we just have to seize them.

Jetzt in diesem Monat, gerade nach den Landtagswahlen in den ostdeutschen Bundesländern,

Now this month, just after the state elections in the eastern German federal states,

gibt es natürlich noch einen Elefanten im Raum, der hier auch noch eine Rolle spielt.

Of course, there is still an elephant in the room that also plays a role here.

Was ist eigentlich mit der Migration?

What is actually going on with migration?

Ohne die Migration wird es nicht funktionieren.

Without migration, it will not work.

Und das beweist ja im Grunde genommen schon die Geschichte Deutschlands,

And that basically proves the history of Germany,

noch viel mehr vielleicht sogar die Geschichte der USA oder Kanadas,

even more, perhaps even the history of the USA or Canada,

dass Migration oder Zuwanderung von qualifizierten Fachkräften ein ganz, ganz wichtiger Treiber ist.

that migration or immigration of skilled professionals is a very, very important driver.

Nicht nur übrigens, um die Bevölkerung stabil zu halten,

Not only, by the way, to keep the population stable,

sondern tatsächlich, um für Innovation zu sorgen,

but actually to ensure innovation,

um für Wirtschaftswachstum zu sorgen,

to ensure economic growth,

um für Wohlstand zu sorgen.

to ensure prosperity.

Und ich zitiere mal in dem Zusammenhang ein paar Zahlen, die augenöffnend sind.

And I would like to quote a few numbers in this context that are eye-opening.

Die Hälfte der wertvollsten Unternehmen in den USA, der größten Unternehmen,

Half of the most valuable companies in the USA, the largest companies,

sind von Zuwanderern gegründet worden.

are founded by immigrants.

Die Hälfte der Startups, die Unicorns sind,

Half of the startups that are unicorns,

also die eine Bewertung haben von mehr als einer Milliarde US-Dollar,

so those that have a valuation of more than one billion US dollars,

sind von Einwanderern gegründet worden.

were founded by immigrants.

Und das zeigt einfach, dass es nicht nur Arbeitskräfte sind,

And that simply shows that they are not just workers,

nicht nur Fachkräfte, sondern häufig Menschen,

not only skilled workers, but often people,

die auf der Suche sind nach einer neuen Existenz,

who are in search of a new existence,

die etwas gründen wollen, die etwas wagen wollen,

those who want to start something, those who want to dare something,

die insofern ein Land vorantreiben können.

that can drive a country forward.

Und die brauchen wir in Deutschland auch.

And we need them in Germany too.

Die haben wir übrigens auch schon in den letzten Jahrzehnten gebraucht.

We have actually needed that as well in the last few decades.

Wir wären nicht dort, wo wir heute stehen würden,

We would not be where we are today.

wenn nicht mit dem Einwanderungsabkommen

if not with the immigration agreement

seit Jahrzehnten viele Menschen nach Deutschland gekommen wären,

for decades many people would have come to Germany,

um hier zu arbeiten, um hier Familien zu gründen,

to work here, to start families here,

dass die Kinder von Einwanderern hier arbeiten,

that the children of immigrants work here,

wir wären nicht da, wo wir heute sind.

we would not be where we are today.

Insofern, glaube ich, besteht eine ganz große Gefahr,

In this respect, I believe there is a very great danger,

dass die Offenheit für Zuwanderung gerade unter die Räder gerät,

that the openness to immigration is currently being crushed,

vermischt in einer Debatte um Fluchtmigration,

mixed in a debate about forced migration,

die auch diskutiert werden muss, aber die etwas anderes ist

which also needs to be discussed, but is something different

als die Zuwanderung von qualifizierten Fachkräften.

as the immigration of skilled professionals.

Und das kann man relativ gut ausrechnen.

Wenn wir uns mal vorstellen, woher wir kommen,

dann muss man sagen, so im langfristigen Mittel

haben wir in Deutschland jedes Jahr die Produktivität,

Klingt vielleicht erst mal gar nicht so viel,

aber man muss sich vorstellen,

dann führt das dazu, dass sich der Wohlstand,

Das ist ganz enorm.

Deswegen haben unsere Eltern gesagt,

Und sie hatten recht, denn rein statistisch gesehen

hat sich der Wohlstand alle 35 Jahre ungefähr verdoppelt.

Wealth has roughly doubled every 35 years.

Und jetzt treten wir auf der Stelle.

And now we are standing still.

Der Wohlstand, das Bruttoinlandsprodukt

The prosperity, the gross domestic product

in der ersten Jahreshälfte 2024

in the first half of 2024

liegt ungefähr auf dem Niveau von 2019.

is roughly at the level of 2019.

Das muss man sich mal vorstellen.

You have to imagine that.

Wir haben jetzt praktisch fünf Jahre Stagnation.

We have now practically had five years of stagnation.

Natürlich ging es da mal runter in der Pandemie.

Of course, it went down during the pandemic.

Danach ging es ein bisschen rauf.

After that, it went up a little.

Aber im Grunde genommen stehen wir da,

But basically, we are there,

wo wir vor fünf Jahren standen.

Der Wohlstand ist in Wirklichkeit mittlerweile

Es liegt aber auch daran,

that we still hold on to evaluating far too much,

an alten Industrien, an Jobs, die vielleicht unproduktiv sind,

in old industries, in jobs that may be unproductive,

anstatt zu sagen, wir lassen die Transformation zu,

instead of saying we allow the transformation,

wir lassen die Veränderung zu

we allow change

und setzen auf solche Industrien, auf solche Unternehmen,

and focus on such industries, on such companies,

auf solche Jobs, die einfach stärker von Technologie profitieren

for such jobs that simply benefit more from technology

und die damit produktiver sind.

and are therefore more productive.

Haben Sie da ein konkretes Beispiel?

Do you have a specific example?

Also wir können natürlich eine ganze Menge tun.

Well, we can certainly do a whole lot.

Wir schauen auf die Entwickler, wir schauen auf die AI,

We look at the developers, we look at the AI,

wir schauen auf die Roboter.

We are looking at the robots.

Aber manchmal sind es auch die ganz leichten Beispiele,

But sometimes it is also the very simple examples,

die uns sagen, wie leicht es ist, produktiver zu werden.

they tell us how easy it is to become more productive.

Als die Restaurants nach der Pandemie

When the restaurants reopened after the pandemic

nach Mitarbeitern gesucht hatten,

looking for employees,

sind sie auf viele, viele ganz tolle innovative Ideen gekommen.

they have come up with many, many really great innovative ideas.

Eine davon war, kleine QR-Codes auf die Tische zu kleben.

One of them was to stick small QR codes on the tables.

Man konnte die dann fotografieren

One could then photograph them.

und seine Bestellung einfach über das Smartphone aufgeben.

and place his order simply through the smartphone.

Hat einfach diesen Prozessschritt gespart,

Just skipped this process step,

dass ein Kellner zum Tisch kommt und eine Bestellung aufnimmt.

that a waiter comes to the table and takes an order.

Und das ist so ein ganz kleines Beispiel, der zeigt,

And that is just a very small example that shows,

wie kann ich diesen Prozess der Bestellannahme digitalisieren?

Und davon gibt es ganz, ganz viele Dinge,

And there are really, really many things about it,

natürlich in größeren Unternehmen noch viel mehr.

Und ich rede jetzt nicht über die Politik,

sondern ich rede über die Unternehmen.

Wie kann ich dafür sorgen, dass Dinge,

die immer noch auf Papier geschehen, jetzt digitalisiert werden?

which are still happening on paper, are now being digitized?

Wie kann ich dafür sorgen, dass Dinge,

How can I ensure that things,

die eigentlich schon längst Maschinen übernehmen könnten,

that could actually have been taken over by machines a long time ago,

von Maschinen übernommen werden oder besser gesagt von Algorithmen?

Insofern sind eine ganze Reihe von Dingen,

die wir tun können, die wir anpacken müssen,

damit, und das ist das Ziel,

Da gibt es ja gerade so ein bisschen so eine Ernüchterung.

There is currently a bit of disillusionment.

Also die großen Versprechen sind noch nicht eingelöst worden.

The big promises have not been fulfilled yet.

Aber ich höre da bei Ihnen raus, Sie glauben schon,

But I hear from you that you already believe,

dass das langfristig wirklich ein großes Problem ist.

that this is truly a big problem in the long term.

Ja, das muss man auch wieder sehen.

Yes, that has to be seen again.

Eine Innovation braucht ihre Zeit,

An innovation takes time,

bis sie wirklich flächendeckend eingesetzt wird

until it is really used on a large scale

und dann auch in der Breite für mehr Produktivität sorgt.

and then also provides more productivity in terms of breadth.

Ich gebe ein paar Beispiele.

I will give a few examples.

Also die Smartphones, bis sie dann eine volle Adaption hatten,

So the smartphones, until they had full adoption,

hat das gut 20 Jahre gedauert.

It took a good 20 years.

Beim Internet war es genauso.

It was the same with the internet.

Das Automobil hat 30 Jahre gedauert,

The automobile took 30 years.

bis es wirklich in den Markt überall eingeführt worden ist.

until it has really been introduced everywhere in the market.

Also große transformative Innovationen,

So large transformative innovations,

brauchen ungefähr eine Generation,

take about a generation,

bis sie wirklich ihr Potenzial entfalten.

until they really unfold their potential.

Und im Grunde genommen gibt es keinen Grund zu sagen,

And basically, there is no reason to say,

dass es mit der AI jetzt oder der künstlichen Intelligenz

that it is about AI now or artificial intelligence

jetzt anders ist.

Das wird auch hier eine Generation dauern.

sehen das Thema viel, viel positiver als wir Europäer.

They view the topic much, much more positively than we Europeans.

Auch die Amerikaner stehen vielleicht so ungefähr dazwischen.

The Americans might also be roughly in between.

Ich glaube, da müssen wir bei allen Bedenken,

I believe we need to consider all concerns there.

die möglicherweise berechtigt sind oder nicht,

which may be justified or not,

aber offener sein, positiver darüber sprechen,

but to be more open, to talk more positively about it,

weil es ist zwingend geboten,

because it is absolutely necessary,

dass wir künstliche Intelligenz einsetzen in allen Bereichen,

that we use artificial intelligence in all areas,

wo sie uns die Arbeit erleichtern kann

where it can make our work easier

oder uns die Arbeit abnehmen kann.

or can take the work off our hands.

Weil, das haben wir ganz am Anfang besprochen,

wir werden in Deutschland weniger Menschen werden.

Ja, das ist eigentlich eine große Frage.

Das ist eine Realität, die von vielen Menschen

nicht so gerne anerkannt wird.

is not so willingly acknowledged.

Aber ohne Wachstum funktioniert das einfach nicht.

But it simply doesn't work without growth.

Es gibt ja immer mal wieder Diskussionen

There are always discussions happening now and then.

rund um das Thema Degrowth

around the topic of degrowth

und sollten wir nicht eigentlich schrumpfen

And shouldn't we actually be shrinking?

aus irgendwelchen Gründen?

for some reasons?

Es gibt aber eigentlich kein schlüssiges

But there is actually no coherent

wirtschaftliches Konzept, nach dem das funktioniert.

economic concept on which this works.

Und das merken wir auch.

And we notice that too.

Also jedes Mal, wenn wir eine Haushaltsdebatte

So every time we have a budget debate

in der Politik sehen, merken wir,

In politics, we see, we notice,

dass wir im Grunde genommen mehr Geld brauchen.

that we basically need more money.

Einmal brauchen wir allein schon deswegen mehr Geld,

One reason we need more money is that...

weil wir in Zukunft mehr Rentner versorgen müssen.

because we will have to support more retirees in the future.

Es wird immer teurer, diese Rente zu finanzieren.

It is becoming increasingly expensive to finance this pension.

Und weil wir älter werden,

And because we are getting older,

wird auch unser Gesundheitssystem immer teurer.

Our healthcare system is also becoming increasingly expensive.

Also wie sollen wir das finanzieren,

So how are we supposed to finance that?

wenn nicht gleichzeitig

if not at the same time

die Wirtschaft wächst?

Is the economy growing?

Also wir müssen unbedingt wachsen.

So we absolutely need to grow.

Und das Zweite ist,

And the second is,

auch Unternehmer, auch Investoren

also entrepreneurs, also investors

brauchen die Aussicht auf wachsende Märkte,

need the perspective of growing markets,

damit sie investieren.

so that they invest.

Wenn wir davon ausgehen würden,

If we were to assume that,

ich mal jetzt mal ganz schwarz,

I'm going to think very pessimistically now.

dass die nächsten zehn Jahre die Wirtschaft schrumpft,

dann investieren sie ja nicht mehr.

Dann öffnen sie keine Fabrik mehr.

Then they won't open any more factories.

Dann machen sie sich eher darüber Gedanken,

Then they are more likely to think about that,

ob sie eine Fabrik schließen.

Und dann kann tatsächlich, was Sie eben so beschrieben haben,

And then what you just described can actually happen,

eine Abwärtsspirale in Gang gesetzt werden,

a downward spiral will be set in motion,

die ganz ganz teuflisch ist.

Die bedeutet nämlich,

Unternehmen erwarten, dass Märkte nicht wachsen.

Companies expect that markets will not grow.

Also investieren sie weniger.

So they invest less.

Weil sie weniger investieren,

Because they invest less,

beschäftigen sie weniger Mitarbeiter.

Employ fewer employees.

Weil weniger Menschen beschäftigt sind,

Because fewer people are employed,

wird auch noch weniger konsumiert.

will also be consumed even less.

Und dann beginnt wirklich die Abwärtsspirale.

And then the downward spiral really begins.

Und ich glaube auch alle Hörer wissen,

And I believe all listeners know,

dass wir heute schon Probleme mit der Finanzierung

von Rente und Gesundheit haben.

Dann wird es unfinanzierbar.

Well, to be honest, in many companies

wollen die Mitarbeiter ja mit neuen Technologien arbeiten.

The employees want to work with new technologies.

Sie sind offen für das.

They are open to that.

Ich glaube, als Gesellschaft brauchen wir ein bisschen mehr Mut,

I believe that as a society we need a little more courage,

auch mal loszulassen.

also to let go sometimes.

Vielleicht auch mal eine Industrie,

Maybe also an industry,

die nicht mehr funktioniert, weitergehen zu lassen.

to let it go on that no longer works.

Wir müssen den Mut haben,

We must have the courage to,

dass ein Unternehmen morgen nicht mehr existiert,

that a company may no longer exist tomorrow,

wenn es dafür ein anderes gibt, was den Job besser macht.

Insofern, mir macht Mut,

die Lust haben auf Innovation,

die Lust haben auf Transformation.

Aber von der aus brauchen wir als Gesellschaft mehr.

But from that point, we as a society need more.

Und wenn ich es auf ein etwas abstrakteres

dann brauchen wir mehr Lust auf die Zukunft.

sondern anfangen, von der Vergangenheit zu träumen.

Dann heißt es nicht mehr, let's build a better future,

sondern, dass uns irgendetwas wieder groß machen.

Wir brauchen diese Lust auf die Zukunft.

Aber das darf keine abstrakte Lust auf die Zukunft sein,

sondern ich glaube,

but I believe,

wir müssen uns auch klar darauf verständigen,

Aber ich bin fest davon überzeugt,

und mehr als 50% glauben,

dass morgen schlechter ist als heute.

So, das müssen wir ändern

und ich glaube, deswegen müssen wir uns
