Aber die Beschreibung einer Urlaubslandschaft, die gehört ja irgendwie zur DNA der Printreisejournalisten.

Seit Jahrzehnten. Das ist ja sozusagen der Text als Gedankenfoto.

For decades. This is basically the text as a thought photograph.

Und wenn wir jetzt mal das Eingangsklischee weglassen.

Und diese Frage hat mich jetzt besonders bewegt bei der Vorbereitung unseres Gesprächs.

Wie kommen Sie als Reiseschreiber damit klar,

How do you, as a travel writer, deal with that,

Ihrer visuellen Eindrücke nun wirklich beraubt worden zu sein?

Have you really been deprived of your visual impressions?

Sie sind ja seit 2011 erblindet.

You have been blind since 2011.

Ganz einfach. Einerseits kenne ich natürlich viel noch von früher.

Very simple. On one hand, I naturally still know a lot from the past.

Also ich weiss, wie ein Strand und ein Meer aussieht und eine Palme.

Well, I know what a beach and a sea look like, as well as a palm tree.

Aber ich habe ja immer jemanden dabei, der mich begleitet.

But I always have someone with me who accompanies me.

Und dessen oder deren Aufgabe ist es natürlich, mir ganz genau zu beschreiben, was man jetzt sieht.

And their task is, of course, to describe to me exactly what one sees now.

Und die einen können das sehr gut, die anderen haben in dem Bereich noch Luft nach oben.

Ich versuche dann auch, meine anderen Sinne einzuschalten in meine Berichterstattung.

Also den Tastsinn oder vor allem auch den Geruchssinn oder was.

So, the sense of touch or especially the sense of smell or something.

Was man hört, das ist ganz klar, das merkt man natürlich bei meinen Texten auch.

What one hears is quite clear, you can certainly notice that in my texts as well.

Auf der anderen Seite muss ich auch sagen, ich bin ja jetzt Rentner.

On the other hand, I must say, I am now retired.

Ich schreibe nicht mehr so viele Reisereportagen wie früher.

I don't write as many travel reports as I used to.

Ich mache mehr eigentlich auch Hintergrundgeschichten und schreibe Porträts.

I actually do more background stories and write portraits.

Aber auch dort ist es natürlich wichtig zu erfassen, wie das Gegenüber, wie der Interviewpartner rüberkommt.

But it is also important there to understand how the other person, how the interviewee comes across.

Und dort fehlt mir natürlich dann manchmal auch das Visuelle.

And of course, sometimes I also miss the visual aspect there.

Worauf ich natürlich hinaus will, das Sehen ist eben das vordergründigste Sinnesorgan eines klassischen Reisejournalisten.

What I am obviously getting at is that sight is indeed the most prominent sense organ of a classical travel journalist.

Ich bin die Kamera und zeige euch die Welt.

I am the camera and show you the world.

Aber ist das wirklich nur oberflächlich gedacht?

But is that really just a superficial thought?

Weil es eben so naheliegend ist, auch in der heutigen Social-Media-Welt,

Because it is simply so obvious, even in today's social media world,

wo es ja anscheinend nur noch um visuelle Reize und Fotospots-to-be geht.

Das kann ich so nachvollziehen.

Das stimmt natürlich, das Visuelle bleibt.

Das ist für mich wichtig, aber man kann schon auch die Bilder mit anderen Sinnen sozusagen erfassen.

wie riechen, schmecken, hören, erarbeiten und greifbar macht und auch natürlich hoffentlich inspirieren dann?

how to smell, taste, hear, work out and make tangible, and hopefully inspire as well?

Ich denke, das ist jetzt schon etwas, ein Spezialgenre von mir,

I think this is already somewhat of a special genre for me.

und dass ich natürlich etwas ausweiche über das Beschreiben einer Drittperson.

and that I am of course somewhat evasive about describing a third person.

Aber ich denke, man will in der Regel von der Reiseberichterstattung schon etwas Optisches erleben.

But I think that generally, one wants to experience something visual from travel reporting.

Vieles geht natürlich aber auch über die Menschen.

A lot also depends on the people, of course.

Ich finde, die Menschen sind in einer Reisereportage ganz wichtig und da habe ich keine Hindernisse.

I believe that people are very important in a travel report, and I have no obstacles there.

Das funktioniert bei mir weiterhin gut.

That continues to work well for me.

Und ich komme sehr gut klar mit Menschen und kann auch Menschen schön zum Klingen und zum Reden bringen.

Und ich vermute mal oft enttäuscht von der Oberflächlichkeit vieler Texte mit ihren Klischeeformulierungen

And I often suspect that I am disappointed by the superficiality of many texts with their cliché formulations.

der plätschernden Dorfbrunnen, der pittoresken alten Häuser und dem bunten, beobachtenden Folkloretreiben.

the splashing village well, the picturesque old houses, and the colorful, observing folk festivities.

Fällt es Ihnen jetzt bei allen mit Gefühl heute deshalb etwas leichter, weil Sie erkannt haben,

Is it now a bit easier for you today with everyone who has feelings because you have realized that,

dass das Sehen eben nicht zwingend ist für gute Texte?

that seeing is not necessarily essential for good texts?

Kann man so sagen, aber so genau habe ich mir das auch noch nicht überlegt.

Aber die Klischees haben mich natürlich immer sehr genervt.

Also wenn die Kollegen...

Wenn die Kollegen schreiben von einer sehr belebten Strasse vom Flughafen ins Stadtzentrum in ein Drittweltland,

When colleagues write about a very busy street from the airport to the city center in a third-world country,

dann muss ich sagen, jede Strasse in ein Drittweltland vom Flughafen ins Zentrum ist belebt oder überfüllt.

Then I have to say, every road in a third-world country from the airport to the center is busy or overcrowded.

Das kann man sich einfach schenken.

You can simply forgo that.

Es ist aber nicht so, dass ich nie in die Klischeefalle getappt bin.

Das ist ein journalistischer Königsweg, nicht nur, weil es bei der Journalistenausbildung immer gepredigt wird.

Aber da haben wir natürlich noch, sagen wir mal, die normative Kraft des Faktischen.

Wenn wir nun sehen, wie die meisten, vor allem freien Prinzjournalistinnen, arbeiten.

If we now see how most, especially freelance journalists, work.

Die sind nämlich eingebettet in eine Recherchereisegruppe mit fünf, sechs anderen und taffem Zeitplan.

They are embedded in a research trip group with five or six others and a tight schedule.

Ich nehme an solchen Reisen jetzt fast gar nicht mehr selbst teil, weil ich ja Filme mache und das passt dann einfach nicht so gut.

I hardly participate in such trips myself anymore, because I make films and that just doesn't fit very well.

Aber wie oft habe ich es früher erlebt?

But how often have I experienced it before?

Und sagen wir mal, Besuch in einer Käserei, dass dann alle nebeneinander stehen, dieselben Bilder machen und eifrig ein paar Originaltönchen ins Notizbüchlein schreiben.

And let's say, a visit to a cheese factory, where everyone stands next to each other, takes the same pictures, and eagerly jots down a few original sounds in their little notebooks.

Wie soll daraus ein guter Reisebericht entstehen?

How is a good travel report supposed to emerge from this?

Da muss man natürlich als Journalist schon etwas fortgeschritten sein, um da was Schlaues rauszuholen.

As a journalist, you definitely need to be somewhat advanced to get anything smart out of that.

Ich hasse solche Reisen auch, aber sie sind natürlich auch eine Herausforderung, wirklich einen eigenen Weg zu gehen.

I hate such trips too, but they are of course also a challenge to really go your own way.

Die Veranstalter sind meistens nicht so erpicht drauf, einem noch etwas Spezielles zu bieten.

The organizers are usually not that eager to offer something special.

Ich habe natürlich auch den Vorteil, dass ich oft auch individuell unterwegs sein kann und mir das dann aussuchen kann oder dass mir etwas Spezielles geboten wird.

Of course, I also have the advantage that I can often travel individually and choose what I want or that something special is offered to me.

Aber solche große Gruppenpressereisen mache ich gar nicht.

But I don’t do such large group press trips at all.

Habe ich früher gemacht, aber das ist schon länger her.

Soll jetzt auch keine generelle Kritik sein an den schreibenden Kollegen?

Weil es ja von der Logistik her, Sie haben es ja gerade gesagt, es gibt kaum Alternativen, an Reiseeindrücke zu kommen.

Because, from a logistical standpoint, as you just mentioned, there are hardly any alternatives to gaining travel impressions.

Nicht jeder kann ja individuell unterwegs sein, abgesehen auch von den Kosten, die ja fast alle Medienunternehmen grundsätzlich nicht tragen wollen.

Not everyone can be on the move individually, aside from the costs that almost all media companies are fundamentally unwilling to bear.

Und nicht umsonst werden die Journalistenpreise, auch der VDJ, fast nie an Texte vergeben, die im Rahmen einer solchen Gruppenrecherche entstanden.

And not for nothing are the journalism awards, including the VDJ, almost never awarded to texts that were created as part of such group research.

Aber das ist eigentlich die Masse dessen, was überhaupt heute noch gedruckt oder publiziert wird.

But that is actually the bulk of what is still printed or published today.

Wie kommt man aus diesem Problem raus?

How do you get out of this problem?

Ich glaube, da kommt man überhaupt nicht raus.

I don't think you can get out of that at all.

Wenn ich mich erinnere an die erste Zeit meines Reisejournalismus, da hat Geld überhaupt keine Rolle gespielt.

When I think back to the early days of my travel journalism, money didn't play a role at all.

Das Wort Budget habe ich erst im Jahr 2002 erstmals gehört.

I first heard the word budget in the year 2002.

Aber die Zeiten sind längst passé.

But those times are long past.

Natürlich auch mit den Kopfblättern.

Of course, also with the head leaves.

Und alles, was ich noch nachlegen wollte, es sind natürlich auch nicht alle Kolleginnen und Kollegen gleichermassen ehrgeizig.

Oder viele geben sich auch einfach mit wenig zufrieden oder sind relativ uninteressiert und schreiben nachher die Pressemeldungen ab.

Bei uns in der Schweiz sieht es nicht ganz so arg aus, aber es geht auch natürlich in die Richtung, klar.

In Switzerland, it doesn't look as bad, but of course, it's heading in that direction as well.

Also es wird abgekupfert von Mutterzeitungen, es wird über Kopfblätter.

So it is copied from parent newspapers, it is done through header sheets.

Also die Zeiten, wo jedes Käseblatt einen eigenen Reiseredakteur hatte, der eine eigenständige Geschichte schrieb, die sind längst vorbei.

So the times when every cheese magazine had its own travel editor writing an independent story are long gone.

Und es kommt nach Tschetschen.

And it is coming to Chechnya.

Die Petite dazu, wo wir uns gar nicht jetzt ausdenken.

Wenn Sie heute so Reiseberichte lesen, in Anführungszeichen, dann sind das ja zwangsläufig gehörte Texte,

Ich möchte das jetzt nicht allzu schlüssig beurteilen, weil ich jetzt nicht ständige Reiseberichte lese.

I don't want to make a conclusive judgment on that right now, because I'm not currently reading constant travel reports.

Aber ich stelle schon auch natürlich fest, dass zum Beispiel in Bernsee, in der Schweiz, in anderen Wegen,

But I also notice, of course, that for example in Bernsee, in Switzerland, in other ways,

die gehen weg von der klassischen Reisereportage.

They are moving away from the classic travel report.

Die machen irgendeine Hintergrundgeschichte über ein Land und nehmen ganz speziellen, manchmal etwas absurden Aspekt.

They create some sort of backstory about a country and take a very specific, sometimes somewhat absurd aspect.

Es gibt das eine, die klischeehaften Reisegeschichten, eher dann im Boulevard oder in den weniger anspruchsvollen Medien.

There are the clichéd travel stories, often found in tabloids or in less demanding media.

Oder dann eben die interessanten Sachen in den anspruchsvolleren Printmedien.

Or then the interesting things in the more sophisticated print media.

Also ich kann mir natürlich, ich habe mich daran gewöhnt, das Kopfkino ist bei mir immer im Gang, bei jedem Text.

Well, I can of course, I have gotten used to it, my mind's eye is always in action with every text.

Ob das nun Reisen, Sport, Politik.

Whether it's travel, sports, or politics.

Ich habe da immer eine gewisse Vorstellung und da spielt für mich überhaupt keine Rolle, dass das für den Print geschrieben ist.

Da frage ich mich natürlich manchmal, da wird dann irgendwie so ein Menschlein vorgelegt.

Irgendwie eine Bäuerin mit allen Facetten und man sagt, wunderschöner Text.

Somehow a farmer woman with all facets, and it is said to be a beautiful text.

Aber die arme Bäuerin, die wird sich bedanken, wenn die Leser sich jetzt irgendwie animiert fühlen, sie auch treffen zu wollen.

But the poor peasant woman will thank herself if the readers feel somehow inspired to want to meet her now.

Das stimmt. Also meine, praktisch ist das meistens nicht gedacht und es nützt auch,
