Demokratie ist niemals garantiert und die offene Gesellschaft gleich gar nicht.

Democracy is never guaranteed, and an open society even less so.

Wir meiden heute das Gefühl, dass es immer nur bergab geht oder so viel verloren gegangen ist in den letzten 20 Jahren.

We avoid the feeling today that it has only been downhill or that so much has been lost in the last 20 years.

Wir verströmen Optimismus. Das Land, der Rechtsstaat, die Verfassung, die Gerechtigkeit, das Gute in der Welt sind nicht dem Untergang geweiht.

We exude optimism. The country, the rule of law, the constitution, justice, the good in the world are not doomed to perish.

Wenn wir uns endlich aufmachen und die guten Dinge beschützen, wenn wir dafür einstehen, dass die Demokratie lebendig bleibt,

When we finally set out and protect the good things, when we stand up for democracy to remain alive,

mag sein, dass wir manchmal nicht mehr so gut sind.

It may be that we are not so good anymore sometimes.
