Und heute machen wir einen kleinen Kurzurlaub am Meer und sind mit dem Niederländer Matthijs Dehn unterwegs zwischen Ost- und Westfriesischen Inseln, zwischen Texel und Norderney.

And today we are taking a short vacation at the sea and are traveling with the Dutchman Matthijs Dehn between the East and West Frisian Islands, between Texel and Norderney.

Auch an der Nordsee passieren natürlich Verbrechen. Dehns Kommissar heißt Lieve Küpido, ein in Deutschland geborener Holländer.

Es gibt eine Szene im Buch, wo ehemalige Retter miteinander schweigend am Meer stehen.

There is a scene in the book where former rescuers stand silently by the sea.

Um deutlich zu machen, wie sie in diese Welt passen und was das mit den Charakteren getan hat, hat es mir sehr viel Spass gemacht, um in diese Szene zu zoomen.

To make it clear how they fit into this world and what it has done to the characters, I enjoyed zooming in on this scene a lot.

Ich weiß nicht genau, was das auf Deutsch ist.

I don't know exactly what that is in German.

Die Leute werden klein und das Meer wird groß.

People become small and the sea becomes large.

Um deutlich zu machen, wie groß die ganze Welt ist, gibt es eine Gruppe von Vögeln, die auffliegen vom Watt.

To make it clear how large the whole world is, there is a group of birds that takes off from the mudflats.

Und dann sieht man, dass die Vögel sich verweidern, erwidern von dem Spiegelbild.

And then you can see that the birds are responding, reacting to the reflection.

Das ist alles sehr schwer auf Deutsch zu sagen.

It's all very difficult to say in German.

Aber dann brauche ich alle Worte und Bilder, um deutlich zu machen, wie groß das Meer ist und wie klein die Menschen sind.

But then I need all the words and pictures to make it clear how vast the sea is and how small the people are.

Und wie das...

And how!

Alles relativiert.

Ja, dafür nütze ich der Landschaft.

Wir machen überhaupt nichts.

Matthäus Dehns Figuren verbringen viel Zeit auf langen, geraden Straßen am Deich, auf dem Rad, auf Wegen hinter den Dünen, gegen den Wind, auf Autokilometern zur Fähre und beim Warten auf Ebbe und Flut.
