Hallo, Johannes Berthoud hier. Gerade wurde in Sachsen und Thüringen gewählt. Anhänger von AfD und Bündnis Sarah Wagenknecht haben gejubelt und alle anderen haben sich mal wieder den Kopf darüber zerbrochen, warum die da im Osten die Populisten wählen.

Hello, Johannes Berthoud here. Elections were just held in Saxony and Thuringia. Supporters of the AfD and the Sarah Wagenknecht Alliance cheered, while everyone else once again puzzled over why they choose populists in the East.

Seit Jahren laufen die Debatten ähnlich ab und am Ende sind sich Ossis und Wessis vielleicht fremder als zuvor, auch weil mehr übereinander als miteinander geredet wird.

For years, the debates have proceeded similarly, and in the end, East Germans and West Germans may feel even more estranged from each other than before, partly because more is said about each other than with each other.

Bei unserem Autor Arno Trümper war es ähnlich. Er wohnt in München und hat irgendwann festgestellt, er kennt die neuen Bundesländer gar nicht so richtig.

It was similar with our author Arno Trümper. He lives in Munich and at some point realized that he doesn't really know the new federal states at all.

30 Jahre nach der Wende. Und dann ist er für das Radio Feature hingefahren. Nicht jetzt nach der Wahl, wir haben das Feature 2023 das erste Mal gebracht.

Er ist nach Ziegenrück in Thüringen gefahren, um die Gegend kennenzulernen.

So was kann seltsam sein, eine Draufschau, oh wie exotisch hier. Aber ich mag sehr, wie Arno und die Ziegenrücker ins Gespräch kommen. Und ich verrate schon mal, er fährt nicht nur einmal hin.

That can be strange, a quick look, oh how exotic it is here. But I really like how Arno and the Ziegenrücker engage in conversation. And I'll reveal already, he doesn't go there just once.

Einige Sachen kann ich nicht teilen, nee. Von meinem Leben, was man so macht und meiner Reisen, wie oft ich unterwegs bin, meinen Lebensstil, also viele Sachen teile ich da gar nicht.

Ja, so anders ist, dass es auf Unverständnis stößt.

Ich treffe Sabine in einem Friseursalon. Einfach nur Friseur steht an der grauen Hauswand, über einem Schaufenster mit Gardinen.

I meet Sabine in a hair salon. "Simply Hairdresser" is written on the gray house wall above a shop window with curtains.

Also im Sinne von, ich mache jetzt keine verrückten Sachen, aber ich habe mir zum Beispiel vor drei Jahren ein Apartment in Amsterdam gekauft, wo ich genau weiß, dass es mindestens doppelt so teuer ist, vielleicht sogar viermal so teuer, wie so ein Einfamilienhäuschen hier.

So in the sense of, I'm not doing anything crazy right now, but for example, three years ago I bought an apartment in Amsterdam, where I know for a fact that it is at least twice as expensive, maybe even four times as expensive, as a single-family home here.

Sie ist aber weggezogen.

But she has moved away.

Ihren richtigen Namen möchte sie nicht im Radio hören.

She does not want to hear her real name on the radio.

Dass es für mich normal ist, ein paar Mal die Woche im Restaurant zu sitzen, weil ich einfach gar nicht so die Zeit finde und weil das für mich auch so dieses Stressabbauen und sozialer Aspekt ist.

That it's normal for me to sit in a restaurant a few times a week because I just don't find the time and because it's also a way for me to relieve stress and have a social aspect.

Also viele können sich das hier einfach nicht leisten.

So many simply cannot afford this here.

Und es gibt einfach nicht das Angebot, in welches Restaurant möchte man dann jetzt hier dreimal die Woche.

Es gibt ja nur zwei, also geht ja gar nicht, ja.

Vor ein paar Jahren habe ich mit einem Freund eine Reise nach Ostsachsen gemacht.

A few years ago, I took a trip to East Saxony with a friend.

Wir waren tatsächlich zwei überhebliche Wessis und haben uns gefühlt wie Abenteurer, die den Wilden Osten erkunden.

We were actually two arrogant people from the West and felt like adventurers exploring the Wild East.

Mich hat die Reise dann nicht mehr losgelassen.

The journey then didn't let go of me anymore.

So fremd kam mir alles vor.

Everything seemed so foreign to me.

Ob es so ein Wessi ist oder nicht.

Whether it is such a "Wessi" or not.

Obwohl ich ja im gleichen Land lebe.

Although I live in the same country.

So schön die Dörfer und so frustriert die Menschen.

So beautiful the villages and so frustrated the people.

Als Journalist konnte ich Corona-Hilfe bekommen.

As a journalist, I was able to get Corona assistance.

Und so habe ich mich dann mit einem Neustart-Kulturstipendium in der Tasche im Februar 2022 auf den Weg nach Ziegenrück gemacht.

And so, with a restart cultural scholarship in hand, I set off for Ziegenrück in February 2022.

Ich will dem Lebensgefühl der Menschen hier nachspüren.

I want to delve into the way of life of the people here.

Sie und ihre Welt kennenlernen.

Getting to know her and her world.

Am Anfang fühle ich etwas Fremdes.

At the beginning, I feel something unfamiliar.

Und erst bei mir.

An meinem zweiten und dritten Besuch ändert sich was.

Something changes during my second and third visit.

Davon aber später.

Ich habe durch die Arbeit, durchs Studium einen sehr internationalen Freundeskreis.

I have a very international circle of friends through work and my studies.

Und ich glaube, die sagen zu mir immer, hey, lass uns doch mal so einen Deutschland-Roadtrip machen.

And I think they always say to me, hey, let’s do a road trip through Germany.

Aber mit denen jetzt wirkliche Auflagen, ich weiß nicht, was denen entgegen springen würde.

But with those actual requirements now, I don't know what would come up against them.

Weil die sind halt zum Teil asiatisch, farbig.

Because they are partly Asian, colored.

Keine Ahnung, ob die jetzt sich wohlfühlen würden auch.

No idea if they would feel comfortable now either.

Ich habe einen brasilianischen Freund.

I have a Brazilian friend.

Und der traut sich in Berlin nicht in bestimmte Stadtteile.

And he doesn't dare to go to certain districts in Berlin.

Und das ist immerhin Berlin.

And after all, this is Berlin.

Immer wenn Sabine nach Ziegenrück kommt, dann lässt sie sich von Roland Funk die Haare schneiden.

Funks Laden ist penibel, sauber und nüchtern eingerichtet.

Der Salon ist das letzte Geschäft in der Innenstadt.

Als ich reinkomme, habe ich das Gefühl, hier bekommt man einen handwerklich perfekten Haarschnitt.

When I walk in, I have the feeling that you get a perfectly crafted haircut here.

Ohne modischen Schnickschnack.

Without fashionable frills.

Leer, wir haben hier über 30 leer stehende Häuser in der Innenstadt.

Empty, we have over 30 vacant houses here in the city center.

Da passiert doch nichts mehr in Zukunft.

Nothing will happen in the future.

Das ist der aktuelle Stand.

That is the current status.

In den letzten 30 Jahren hat sich da hier nichts weiter geändert.

In the last 30 years, nothing has really changed here.

Meine Eltern haben das Haus hier 1962, 1963 gebaut.

My parents built this house in 1962, 1963.

Und seitdem sind wir in Ziegenrück als Friseur ansässig, zweiter Generation.

And since then, we have been established as hairdressers in Ziegenrück, in the second generation.

Und das sind wir halt da.

And that's just who we are.

Und sonst passiert da nichts mehr in Ziegenrück.

And nothing else happens in Ziegenrück.

Wir haben halt den Anschluss verpasst.

We just missed the connection.

Nach der Wende.

After the turn.

In den Augen von Roland Funk liegt etwas Trauriges.

In Roland Funk's eyes, there is something sad.

Er wirkt genauso seriös und nüchtern wie sein Salon.

He appears just as serious and sober as his salon.

Ich frage Sabine später, warum er so bedrückt wirkt.

I will ask Sabine later why he looks so dejected.

Also er hat eine gewisse negative Art, aber auf der anderen Seite denke ich so,

So he has a certain negative way about him, but on the other hand I think that way,

ja, das ist vielleicht auch so ein bisschen realistisch.

Also der hat so einen guten Durchschnitt.

So he has such a good average.

Der ist so ein Durchschnittstyp.

Durchschnittlich interessiert an der Weltgeschichte,

aber auch sehr interessiert an seinem Dorf und seinem Verein und diesem Zusammenhalt und so.

but also very interested in his village and his club and this sense of community and so on.

Und er ist auch immer sehr...

And he is always very...

Sehr stark involviert gewesen in diesem Vereinsleben, sage ich jetzt mal.

I have been very strongly involved in this club life, I would say.

Karnevalsverein und so weiter und so fort.

Carnival club and so on and so forth.

Und ich kann mir vorstellen, dass dem das auch sehr nahe geht,

And I can imagine that this affects him very deeply as well.

dass das alles so ein bisschen den Bach runter geht.

that everything is going a bit down the drain.

Und dann ist dann auch dieser soziale Zusammenhalt nicht mehr ganz so ausgeprägt,

And then this social cohesion is no longer quite as pronounced.

wie es vielleicht früher mal war.

Ja, und da er halt sehr interessiert ist an diesem...

Yes, and since he is very interested in this...

Also das ist, glaube ich, schon ein wichtiger Teil seiner Identität.

So I think that is already an important part of his identity.

Das Vereinsleben kann ich mir vorstellen, dass er darunter leidet.

I can imagine that club life suffers because of it.

Ja, vielleicht auch ein bisschen negativer ist.

Yes, maybe it's also a bit more negative.

Also es kommt vom Schuhgeschäft über Bekleidung, über zwei Ärzte, zwei Zahnärzte.

So it comes from the shoe store, clothing, two doctors, and two dentists.

Alles, was man sich denken kann, war hier.

Everything one can think of was here.

Drei Lebensmittelgeschäfte, Klempner, Elektriker.

Three grocery stores, plumber, electrician.

Alles, was man gebraucht hat zum Leben.

Everything one needs to live.

Und nach der Rente ist das eben dann weg gewesen.

And after retirement, that was simply gone then.

Bei meinem ersten Besuch in Ziegenrück habe ich das Gefühl,

During my first visit to Ziegenrück, I have the feeling,

dass mich keiner, dem ich auf der Straße...

that no one I meet on the street...

...begegne, eines Blickes würdigt.

...encounters, merits a glance.

Ziegenrück liegt idyllisch.

Ziegenrück is located idyllically.

In einem kleinen Tal an der Saale und rundherum Wald.

In a small valley by the Saale and surrounded by woods.

Ich denke mir, dass es hier drei Arten von Häusern gibt.

I think there are three types of houses here.

Und mal mir aus, wem die gehören könnten.

And imagine to whom they could belong.

Die Ruinen stehen für die, die aufgegeben haben.

The ruins stand for those who have given up.

Ohne Job und ohne Perspektive.

Without a job and without prospects.

Dann gibt es die liebevoll sanierten Fachwerkhäuser.

Then there are the lovingly renovated half-timbered houses.

Hier wohnen die, die im neuen Deutschland angekommen sind.

Here live those who have arrived in the new Germany.

Und dann gibt es noch die grell Angestrichenen.

And then there are the brightly painted ones.

Mit Industrieputz, Fassade und den praktischen Kunststofffenstern.

With industrial plaster, facade, and practical plastic windows.

Die haben die Bewohner so gebaut, wie sie es sich zu DDR-Zeiten gewünscht hätten.

They built the residents as they would have wished during GDR times.

Ohne Mangel am Baumaterial ist jetzt alles gepflegt und technisch perfekt.

Without a lack of building materials, everything is now well-maintained and technically perfect.

Was nicht der Norm entspricht, ist,

What does not conform to the norm is,

dass die Bewohner hier leben.

that the residents live here.

Da werden sie misstrauisch.

That's when they become suspicious.

Das ist die Einwärmerurlauberstadt.

This is the warm-up holiday resort city.

Da gab es mehrere Vertragshäuser von der Gewerkschaft.

There were several contracting houses from the union.

Da waren dann jeden Monat 450, 500 Urlauber über die Gewerkschaft

There were then 450, 500 vacationers through the union every month.

in den einzelnen Häusern aufgeteilt.

divided into the individual houses.

Und dann waren noch 1.500 Personen ca. auf dem Campingplatz.

And then there were about 1,500 people at the campsite.

Wo die ganzen Firmen aus der Leipziger Gegend

Where are all the companies from the Leipzig area?

ihre Ferienhäuser hatten.

their holiday homes had.

Da haben die Leute Urlaub gemacht.

The people vacationed there.

Da sind sie die Zeit nicht über die Straße gekommen.

They didn't make it across the street in time.

Da waren viele Leute hier.

There were many people here.

Das war mit der Wende schlagartig weg.

That was suddenly gone with the reunification.

Dann wurde unser Freibad geschlossen.

Then our outdoor swimming pool was closed.

Dann wurde unsere Schule geschlossen.

Then our school was closed.

Dann wurde die Eisenbahnstrecke stillgelegt.

Then the railway line was closed.

Dann war der Ort tot.

Then the place was dead.

Das war es.

That was it.

Da kann man jetzt nichts mehr machen hier.

There's nothing more to be done here now.

Wie wollen sie das beleben?

How do they want to bring that to life?

Sie finden niemanden mehr, der hier so ein altes Haus saniert.

You won't find anyone anymore who renovates such an old house here.

Wenn die 15, 20 Jahre leer stehen und es regnet von oben bis unten durch,

If it has been empty for 15 or 20 years and it rains from top to bottom,

dann war es das.

Then that was it.

Wir hatten alles, was wir gebraucht hatten, war hier.

We had everything we needed, it was here.

So ein bisschen self-made.

A bit self-made.

Ich habe mir das alles selber aufgebaut.

I built all of this myself.

Meine Familie hat mich damals

My family used to...

auch nicht beim Studium unterstützen können.

nor can support them in their studies.

ist zum Studieren nach Baden-Württemberg gegangen.

has gone to Baden-Württemberg to study.

Das hat mich auch damals an Stuttgart gestört.

That bothered me about Stuttgart back then as well.

Ich war 18 Monate im Ausland, bin zurück nach Stuttgart.

I was abroad for 18 months and am back in Stuttgart.

Mit diesem Flieger waren dann 2 Frauen.

With this plane, there were then 2 women.

2 Schwaben vor mir.

2 Swabians in front of me.

Die haben den ganzen Flug über 1 h nur gemeckert.

They complained for an hour throughout the entire flight.

Da ist es schon sehr ausgeprägt.

It is already very pronounced there.

Aber hier ist es auch eine gewisse Meckerkultur.

But there is also a certain culture of complaining here.

Dass man sich auf das versteift, was gerade nicht so gut läuft.

That one fixates on what is not going so well at the moment.

Das stört mich schon irgendwie, muss ich sagen.

That bothers me somewhat, I must say.

Sabine bleibt nicht in Deutschland, zieht weiter in die Niederlande.

Sabine is not staying in Germany, she is moving on to the Netherlands.

In Rotterdam besucht sie eine Business School

In Rotterdam, she is attending a business school.

und fängt an, in einer großen Software-Firma zu arbeiten.

and starts working at a large software company.

Es hat so etwas Weinerliches.

It has such a whining quality.

Dass man ständig diese Eingeständnisse machen muss.

That one constantly has to make these admissions.

Dass man sich damit aber auch abfindet und einrichtet.

That one comes to terms with it and settles into it.

Das merke ich schon.

I can already tell.

Das hatte auch damit zu tun,

That had to do with it,

mit dieser Kultur waren die Leute über Dekaden eingesperrt in ihrem Land.

With this culture, people were imprisoned in their country for decades.

Sie hatten keine anderen Einflüsse, außer den Ostblock.

They had no other influences except for the Eastern Bloc.

Und das auch nur die, die privilegiert waren.

And only those who were privileged.

Wenn wir jetzt mal ganz ehrlich sind.

If we're being completely honest right now.

Und dann auch, was den Leuten danach zugestoßen ist.

And then also, what happened to the people afterwards.

Ich bin aus einer Generation der Einzelkinder.

I come from a generation of only children.

Die Familien haben kein zweites Kind gekriegt,

The families did not have a second child.

weil Anfang der 90er einfach das Chaos ausgebrochen ist.

because chaos broke out in the early 90s.

Die wurden alle gefeuert in ihren Unternehmen.

They were all fired from their companies.

Bei meiner Mutter stand der Job auch so ein bisschen auf Kippe.

My mother's job was also a bit precarious.

Mein Vater war jahrelang arbeitslos.

My father was unemployed for years.

Das ist auch so eine Kultur der Hoffnungslosigkeit gewesen.

That has also been a culture of hopelessness.

Wo die Leute vielleicht nicht diese Perspektiven gesehen haben.

Where people may not have seen these perspectives.

Dass sich da irgendwas Neues eröffnet.

That something new is opening up there.

Persönlich, was mir sehr aufgestoßen ist,

Personally, what has really bothered me is that,

es war halt auch 2015 die Flüchtlingskrise.

It was also the refugee crisis in 2015.

Ich kann mich erinnern, als die Züge in Amsterdam ankamen.

I can remember when the trains arrived in Amsterdam.

Leute da standen mit Decken, Getränken, Notunterkünfte,

People stood there with blankets, drinks, emergency shelters,

das selbe hat man ja in München zum Beispiel auch gesehen.

One has seen the same thing in Munich, for example.

Da waren ja auch große Aktionen.

There were also big events.

Und im Osten ist das nicht so richtig angelaufen, habe ich das Gefühl.

And in the east, I get the feeling that it hasn't really taken off.

Da gab es einige, die da sehr engagiert waren.

There were some who were very committed to that.

Aber irgendwie war da sofort diese Abwehrreaktion.

But somehow there was immediately this defensive reaction.

So, nee, das ist fremd.

So, no, that's foreign.

Nee, das wollen wir nicht.

No, we don't want that.

Und wir fühlen uns da unwohl.

And we feel uncomfortable there.

Das hat mich schon ein bisschen schockiert, muss ich sagen.

That shocked me a little, I must say.

Das hat mich schon mitgenommen.

That really affected me.

Also diese ganze Wendegeneration und die,

So this entire turnaround generation and the,

die halt so noch nostalgisch da dran hängen.

they still nostalgically cling to it.

Und früher war ja alles besser.

Das war früher nicht alles besser.

It wasn't all better in the past.

Ja, da gab es große Einschränkungen.

Yes, there were significant restrictions.

Und da gab es auch Sachen, die einfach nicht in Ordnung waren.

And there were also things that were just not okay.

Aber das ist auch diese Generation,

die sich so neuen Dingen komplett verwehrt.

Und die auch vielleicht eine Furcht aufbaut.

Also das finde ich auch, diese Wahrnehmung vom Osten,

Im Spätsommer 2022 fahre ich zum zweiten Mal nach Ziegenrück.

Die Straße führt durch eine Landschaft

mit wenigen kleinen Dörfern und flachen Hügeln.

Das ändert sich plötzlich,

als die Straße eine enge Kurve macht und steil abfällt.

Der Hang ist dicht bewaldet

The slope is densely forested.

und nach weiteren Serpentinen erste Häuser.

and after more winding roads, the first houses.

Es wird schon dunkel und aus der Saale steigen Nebelschwaden auf.

It is getting dark and clouds of mist are rising from the hall.

Bis zur Wende hatte Ziegenrück 1200 Einwohner.

Until the reunification, Ziegenrück had 1,200 inhabitants.

600 sind noch übrig.

600 are still left.

Es gab mal eine Bahnlinie und einen Sonderzug aus Leipzig,

There used to be a railway line and a special train from Leipzig,

der hunderte Ausflügler brachte.

the hundreds of excursionists brought.

Die Strecke ist stillgelegt, aber die Touristen gibt es wieder.

The line is closed, but the tourists are back.

Dann kam der erste Angestellte, dann kam der zweite Angestellte.

Then the first employee came, then the second employee came.

Und dann wurde das langsam so ein bisschen,

Es wurde wirklich auch von den Gästen geschätzt.

Es war ein Stammtisch zusammengekommen, Freitagsabend immer.

Aber das waren ja nur 25 Plätze, ganz, ganz klein gehalten.

Und da haben wir eine Ausschau gehalten im Umkreis,

um eigentlich verwirklichen können,

Und dann war das Gebäude eben hier, das wir gekauft haben.

Und hier oben über dem Haus waren sieben Zimmer gewesen.

Wurde immer bekannter, immer mehr.

Jetzt müssten wir immer mehr Leuten absagen,

Ich weiß nur, dass ich 63 bin.

Im November 2022 reise ich das letzte Mal für dieses Feature nach Ziegenrück.

In November 2022, I traveled to Ziegenrück for the last time for this feature.

Jetzt soll die große Karnevalsgala stattfinden.

Now the big carnival gala is set to take place.

Clarissa Leitinger und Elisabeth Schmidt sind hier seit ihrer Kindheit Gardetänzerinnen.

Clarissa Leitinger and Elisabeth Schmidt have been carnival dancers here since their childhood.

Inzwischen haben beide studiert und wohnen in größeren Städten.

In the meantime, both have studied and live in larger cities.

Ihre Liebe zu Ziegenrück und zur Ziegenrücker Karnevalsgesellschaft haben sie aber nie verloren.

However, they have never lost their love for Ziegenrück and the Ziegenrück Carnival Society.

Zu den Proben und Auftritten der Garde kommen sie immer, wenn es geht.

They always come to the rehearsals and performances of the guard whenever possible.

Ich will wissen, wie sie über ihre Heimat denken, die ihnen offenbar sehr wichtig ist.

I want to know how they think about their homeland, which is evidently very important to them.

Die sie aber inzwischen aus einer gewissen Distanz betrachten, weil sie hier nicht mehr leben.

However, they are now looking at it from a certain distance, as they no longer live here.

Bei der letzten Bundestagswahl wurde ja relativ viel AfD gewählt.

In the last federal election, a relatively large number of votes were cast for the AfD.

Das war die größte...

That was the biggest...

Leidiges Thema hier in Ziegenrück.

A painful topic here in Ziegenrück.

Ja? Inwiefern?

Yes? In what way?

Naja.

Well.

Also ich als junge Vertreterin der, sagen wir mal, linksgrün versifften Ecke.

So, me as a young representative of what we might call the left-green contaminated corner.

So würden es die Leute nennen.

That's what people would call it.

So würden es die Leute hier einfach nennen.

That's what people here would simply call it.

Und das ist halt einfach traurig, wenn man so sieht, wie die Menschen hier unten denken.

And it is just sad when you see how the people down here think.

Und dass sie halt auch keine anderen Denkweisen zulassen. Das ist sehr traurig.

And that they also do not allow other ways of thinking. That is very sad.

Aber... was soll ich machen?

But... what am I supposed to do?

Es sind alles alte... nein, das ist...

They are all old... no, that is...

Dazu kann man sagen...

You can say about that...

Das tut es den Menschen gut, wenn sie mal rauskommen in die weite Welt, sag ich mal.

It does people good to get out into the wide world, I would say.

Und ihren Horizont erweitern.

And broaden their horizons.

Das ist vielleicht auch so ein Problem.

That might also be a problem.

Ich habe immer das Gefühl, dass viele so sehr beschränkt sind in ihrem Denken.

I always have the feeling that many are so limited in their thinking.

Sie haben hier in Ziegenrück unten im Tal.

They have here in Ziegenrück down in the valley.

Ich bin so ein bisschen befangen, weil so politische Fragen in Interviews finde ich irgendwie schwierig.

I'm a bit hesitant because I find political questions in interviews somewhat difficult.

Ja.

Yes.

Aber ja, also jemand, der im Kommunismus aufgewachsen ist, hat einfach eine andere Grundeinstellung.

But yes, someone who grew up in communism simply has a different basic attitude.

Würde ich jetzt mal als Hypothese aufstellen.

I would propose that as a hypothesis.

Gegenüber einer Regierung.

Against a government.

Gegenüber einer Regierung als jemand, der nicht im Kommunismus aufgewachsen ist.

Opposite a government as someone who did not grow up in communism.

Und das kann halt zu solchen Querdenkern zum Beispiel führen.

And that can lead to such lateral thinkers, for example.

Allerdings muss ich sagen, dass man auch in letzter Zeit gemerkt hat,

However, I must say that it has also been noticeable recently,

dass es viele junge Familien wieder nach Ziegenrück zieht.

that many young families are moving back to Ziegenrück.

Also, dass das älteste Jugendballett zu uns aufgestiegen ist

So, that the oldest youth ballet has joined us.

und wir haben trotzdem wieder drei Kinder- und Jugendballetts.

And we still have three children’s and youth ballet performances again.

Weil eben tatsächlich relativ viele junge Familien, die wirklich schon auch woanders gearbeitet haben,

Because quite a few young families, who have actually worked elsewhere,

gemerkt haben, wir möchten wieder gerne nach Hause.

We realized that we would like to go home again.

Und dadurch, finde ich, haben wir hier echt sehr viel Jugend.

And because of that, I think we really have a lot of youth here.

Und auch, naja gut, was heißt Jugend? Kinder.

And also, well, what does youth mean? Children.

Und ich finde, das bereichert den Ort.

And I think that enriches the place.

Und ich glaube, dass das einfach der Kreislauf ist.

And I believe that this is simply the cycle.

Und dass sich das halt die ganze Zeit wandelt.

And that it keeps changing all the time.

Und dass die Menschen in Ziegenrück das aber auch kennen.

And that the people in Ziegenrück know that too.

Dass ihre eigenen Kinder ausfliegen, aber vielleicht auch irgendwann wiederkommen.

That their own children leave home, but maybe will come back someday.

Oder die Kinder des Nachbarn.

Or the children of the neighbor.

Und dadurch ist das alles in Bewegung.

And thus, everything is in motion.

Aber ich finde, es ist gut, dass das alles so in Bewegung ist.

But I think it's good that everything is in motion like this.

Und nicht hier irgendwie komisch ist.

And it's not somehow weird here.

Und nicht hier irgendwie komisch stagniert.

And not stagnating here in some strange way.

Und man nur die Menschen sieht, die man hier schon immer gesehen hat.

And you only see the people you have always seen here.

Sondern es kommen halt auch andere dazu.

But other people are also getting involved.

Dafür, dass andere weggehen.

For others to leave.

Sehr gut.

Very good.

Es ist ja nichts. Kommt keiner.

It's nothing. No one is coming.

Alles gut.

All good.

Mach mal Platz.

Make some room.

Erf sie oder mehr als erf mich.

Experience her or more than experience me.

Bloß so hier kannst du gar nicht Platz machen, weil die Leine zu kurz ist.

Bevor die große Karnevalsgala beginnt, besuche ich noch einmal Petra Grigier, die Wirtin vom Hotel Fernmühle.

Before the big carnival gala begins, I visit Petra Grigier again, the landlady of the Fernmühle hotel.

Später während der Gala wird sie hinter der Bar stehen.

Later during the gala, she will be standing behind the bar.

Jetzt möchte ich aber wissen, wie sie die wirtschaftliche Situation hier sieht.

Now I would like to know how she views the economic situation here.

Und was sie von der Zukunft erwartet.

And what she expects from the future.

Wenn ich jetzt für unser Unternehmen sprechen soll, und das kann ich eigentlich am genauesten dann.

If I am to speak for our company now, I can actually do that most accurately then.

Es kommen eigentlich wirklich aus Ziegenrücken fast alle zu uns.

Almost all of them actually come from the backs of goats to us.

Weil man halt auch, sag ich mal, im Ort mit offenen Augen durchgeht.

Because one also walks through the town with open eyes, you know what I mean.

Mit jedem Gespräch führt und halt eben offen ist.

With every conversation, it leads and stays open.

Wenn ich ein Anschreiben zum Beispiel an meine Gäste mache, da ist immer ein herzliches Wort dabei irgendwo.

When I write a letter, for example to my guests, there is always a warm word in there somewhere.

Da gibt es nicht nur einen Satz. Ja, sie haben noch Zimmer frei für sie.

There is not just one sentence. Yes, they still have rooms available for you.

Sondern da wird halt noch was dazu geschrieben.

But something else will be added there.

Sie haben mehrere Anfragen gestellt.

You have made several inquiries.

Und unsere war immer diejenige, die am nettesten geschrieben war.

And ours was always the one that was written the nicest.

Und deswegen sagen es einige nachher der Gäste.

And that's why some of the guests say it afterwards.

Deswegen kommen sie halt dann auch.

That's why they come then too.

Was anderes kann ich eigentlich dazu nicht großartig sagen.

I can't really say much else about it.

Wie gesagt, offen sein, optimistisch sein und eigentlich das leben, was man denkt.

As I said, be open, be optimistic, and actually live what you think.

Also von Herzen muss es kommen.

So it must come from the heart.

Petra Grigier wirkt optimistisch und auch stolz auf das, was sie wirtschaftlich erreicht hat.

Petra Grigier seems optimistic and also proud of what she has achieved economically.

Aber ich meine auch herauszuhören, dass sie viel kämpfen musste.

But I also mean to hear that she had to fight a lot.

Als Vorsitzende des Fremdenverkehrsvereins ist Petra Grigier sicherlich eine von den treibenden Kräften in Ziegenrück.

As the chairwoman of the tourism association, Petra Grigier is certainly one of the driving forces in Ziegenrück.

In den letzten Jahren, dass wirklich, sag ich mal, wieder sehr gut angenommen wird.

In recent years, it's really, let's say, being received very well again.

Oder auch Häuser gekauft werden, die dann wieder renoviert werden.

Or houses can be bought that are then renovated again.

Ich meine, oben die Jugend-Tabelle ist ja verkauft worden.

I mean, the youth table above has been sold.

Oder die ist jetzt schon seit vielen Jahren privat geworden.

Or it has been private for many years now.

Was aber eigentlich für ein Ort sehr gut war.

But that was actually very good for a place.

Weil das ist alles neu gemacht worden.

Because everything has been redone.

Das Dach ist gemacht worden.

The roof has been done.

Das ist alles wirklich investiert worden.

That has all really been invested.

Dann die Schule ist zugemacht worden, 98 hier oben.

Then the school was closed down, 98 up here.

Das ist jetzt ein Mutter-Kind-Chorheim geworden.

This has now become a mother-child choir home.

Und das trägt auch dazu bei, dass die Leute nach Ziegenrück kommen, die einmal da waren.

And that also contributes to people coming to Ziegenrück who have been there once.

Die sagen, ach Mensch, war es hier schön.

They say, oh man, how beautiful it was here.

Es gibt Wanderwege, man kann hier irgendwas.

There are hiking trails, you can do something here.

Es ist zwar natürlich klein, aber da kann man jetzt hinfahren, wo man möchte.

It may be small, but now you can go wherever you want.

Und deswegen muss man halt versuchen, aus dem bisschen Positiven, was hier da ist, noch mehr zu machen.

And that's why you have to try to make more out of the little bit of positivity that is here.

Und das Durchhaltevermögen zu haben.

And to have the perseverance.

Als ich Ziegenrück verlasse, denke ich an die vielen Begegnungen mit Menschen,

As I leave Ziegenrück, I think of the many encounters with people,

die weggegangen sind und heute wieder herziehen und glücklich sind.

those who have left and are now moving back and are happy.

Und an die, die heute woanders wohnen, aber immer wieder zurückkehren.

And to those who live elsewhere today, but keep coming back.

Wenn ich mich jetzt an Stuttgart, an meine WG erinnere,

When I think back to Stuttgart, to my shared apartment,

da gab es halt auch ganz viele Typen, die einfach nur langweilig sind.

There were also a lot of guys who are just boring.

Und es ist ein bisschen zu Tode langweilig.

And it is a bit deathly boring.

Es gibt auch viele Sachen, die einen nach wie vor ein bisschen berühren.

There are also many things that still touch you a little.

Und die einem nahestehen.

And those close to you.

Und warum nicht das Beste aus beiden Welten?

And why not the best of both worlds?

Sich so in so einem Poket zusammenstellen

To assemble oneself in such a pocket.

und einfach die besten Erscheinungen und Eigenschaften aus beiden Welten zusammenführen.

and simply combine the best appearances and qualities from both worlds.

Das ist, glaube ich, das.

I think that's it.

Und das haben meine Eltern schon ganz gut gecheckt, dass ich das eigentlich so mache.

And my parents have already understood pretty well that I actually do it this way.
