Bevor wir uns gleich konkreter mit dem Thema beschäftigen, würde ich einmal gern die Begriffe Kräutermedizin, Klostermedizin und Schulmedizin voneinander abgrenzen bzw. die Definition schärfen.

Before we get more specific with the topic, I would like to clarify the distinctions between the terms herbal medicine, monastery medicine, and conventional medicine.

Wie unterscheidet man denn die Begriffe?

How do you differentiate the terms?

Klostermedizin meint die Medizin im 6. bis 12. Jahrhundert.

Monastic medicine refers to the medicine from the 6th to the 12th century.

Also auch während des Mittelalters.

So also during the Middle Ages.

Diese Medizin basierte auf Pflanzenheilkunde, war also Kräutermedizin.

This medicine was based on herbal medicine, so it was herbal medicine.

Die Klostermedizin wurde meist in Klöstern ausgeübt, weil eben früher die Klöster auch Orte waren, die autonomes Leben angestrebt haben, wo alte Schriften aufbewahrt oder überhaupt erst angefertigt wurden.

Monastic medicine was mostly practiced in monasteries because, in the past, monasteries were also places that aspired to autonomous living, where ancient writings were preserved or even created in the first place.

Und es gibt Hinweise darauf, dass die Benediktiner im frühen 6. Jahrhundert festgelegt haben,

And there is evidence that the Benedictines established in the early 6th century,

dass zum autonomen Leben auch eine Medizin gebraucht wurde.

that autonomous living also required medicine.

Und dass sie auch eine Person gehört, die sich mit Heilverfahren auskennt.

Das ist ja ein Wissen, das teilweise schon Jahrtausende alt ist und zum Teil ja auch auf die alten Ägypter zurückgeht.

That is knowledge that is partly thousands of years old and partly goes back to the ancient Egyptians.

Und es ist ja auch klar, dass das etwas anderes ist als die klassische Schulmedizin.

And it is clear that this is something different from classical conventional medicine.

Ich glaube, und das ist auch das, was die Interviewpartnerinnen und Partner gesagt haben,

dass es gar nicht so sehr um die Frage geht, was jetzt besser ist oder besser wirkt.

Es gibt einfach Rezepturen und Kräuter.

There are simply recipes and herbs.

Die früher angewendet oder verwendet wurden, die würde man heute nicht mehr verwenden.

Those that were used or applied in the past would not be used anymore today.

Den Schierling zum Beispiel, eine der giftigsten Pflanzen, die wir in Europa haben.

The hemlock, for example, one of the most toxic plants we have in Europe.

Sowas wie die Ringelblume verwenden wir dagegen heute auch noch, genauso als Salbe.

We still use something like the marigold today, just like as an ointment.

In Abgrenzung dazu meint die Schulmedizin eben die wissenschaftliche Medizin.

In contrast, conventional medicine refers to scientific medicine.

Die Kräutermedizin kann an manchen Stellen unterstützend wirken oder guttun.

Herbal medicine can have supportive effects or be beneficial in certain areas.

Ja, schwere Krankheiten.

Yes, serious illnesses.

Die Krebs würde man jetzt aber ganz überwiegend wohl mit dem schulmedizinischen Ansatz behandeln.

Cancer would now predominantly be treated with the conventional medical approach.

Bei der Kräuter- oder Klostermedizin kommt es auch ein bisschen darauf an, den eigenen Körper gut zu kennen.

With herbal or monastery medicine, it also depends a bit on knowing your own body well.

Dann wollen wir mal auf eine Pflanze schauen und uns mit der näher beschäftigen, nämlich die Mürre.

Then let's take a look at a plant and focus on the myrrh.

Das ist ja ein Baum, der vor allem in trockenen Gegenden wächst, zum Beispiel in Somalia.

Und die Mürre, die ist wohl eine der bekanntesten Pflanzen auch in der Christentum.

And myrrh is probably one of the most well-known plants in Christianity as well.

Die Mürre ist eine der bekanntesten pflichtlichen Religionen geworden.

Myrrh has become one of the most well-known obligatory religions.

Wir kennen sie nämlich aus der Weihnachtsgeschichte.

We know them from the Christmas story.

Die Weisen aus dem Morgenland bringen ja auch Geschenke mit zu dem neugeborenen Jesuskind in der Krippe in Bethlehem.

The wise men from the East also bring gifts to the newborn Jesus in the manger in Bethlehem.

Das ist einmal Gold, Weihrauch und eben die Mürre.

That is gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

Neben diesem sehr bekannten Fakt taucht die Mürre in der Bibel aber nochmal auf.

In addition to this well-known fact, myrrh appears again in the Bible.

Und das Spannende ist, dass dieses Wissen heute fast vergessen ist.

And the exciting thing is that this knowledge is almost forgotten today.

Das hat mir Ulf Lückl erzählt.

Ulf Lückl told me that.

Im niedersächsischen Ammelungsborn, der sich mit der Mürre bestens auskennt.

In the Lower Saxony Ammelungsborn, which is well acquainted with myrrh.

Mürre war damals schon ein wahnsinnig teures Mittel, weil es immer gebraucht wurde für medizinische Dinge,

Myrrh was already an incredibly expensive substance back then, because it was always used for medical purposes.

aber besonders eben auch für Einbalsamierungen.

but especially also for embalming.

Also dieser Harz, dieses Mürrestrauch, der wurde schon im alten Ägypten verwandt für Einbalsamierungen.

So this resin, this myrrh shrub, was already used in ancient Egypt for embalming.

Und in der Bibel, im Christentum überhaupt, taucht die Mürre noch ein paar Mal auf.

And in the Bible, in Christianity in general, myrrh appears a few more times.

Und zwar auch wieder bei Jesus.

And indeed again with Jesus.

Am Anfang und am Ende, bei der Geburt.

At the beginning and at the end, at birth.

Und man reicht ihm einen Mürretrank am Kreuz.

And they offer him a sour wine on the cross.

Bei Jesus wurde das eben auch als Linderung gedacht, als er am Kreuz hing.

With Jesus, this was also intended as relief when he hung on the cross.

Gewissermaßen eine Art Betäubungstrank, wenn man so möchte.

In a way, a sort of anesthetic potion, if you will.

Den aber ablehnt.

But rejects it.

Die Juden haben das sehr wohl verwandt.

The Jews have indeed used that very well.

Und zwar zum einen eben auch als Mürretinktur,

Namely also as a murri tincture,

was dann eben eine gewisse pharmazeutische Wirkung hatte bei Entzündungen.

which then had a certain pharmaceutical effect on inflammation.

Vor allen Dingen im Mundbereich, aber auch als Schmerzmittel.

Above all in the mouth area, but also as a pain reliever.

Sie haben das gerade gesehen.

You just saw that.

Sie haben es gerade schon angesprochen, dass die Mürre ein wichtiger Stoff bei der Einbalsamierung war.

You just mentioned that myrrh was an important substance in embalming.

Können Sie beschreiben, wie die Mürre da genau angewendet wurde?

Can you describe exactly how the myrrh was applied there?

Es gibt da sogar eine Stelle im Alten Testament, wo dann eben ganz deutlich gesagt wird,

There is even a passage in the Old Testament where it is clearly stated that...

im dritten Buch Mose, wie eben ein Salböl zusammengemixt wird.

in the book of Leviticus, how an anointing oil is mixed together.

Dort kommt eben dann Mürre rein, Olivenöl, aber genauso eben auch Zimt.

Then myrrh is added, olive oil, but just as well cinnamon.

Und das war schon etwas ganz Besonderes.

And that was something really special.

Nach der Mürre-Mischung wurde die Mürre in die Mürre gemischt.

After the myrrh mixture, the myrrh was mixed into the myrrh.

Nach dem Tod von Jesus kam sie ja auch noch einmal zum Einsatz, nämlich wie?

After the death of Jesus, it was used once again, namely how?

Mürre spielte natürlich auch noch eine große Rolle bei der Grablegung Jesu.

Myrrh also played a significant role in the burial of Jesus.

So ist es zumindest im Johannes-Evangelium überliefert, im 19. Kapitel.

At least this is how it is recorded in the Gospel of John, in chapter 19.

Da kommt Nikodemus und der kauft einfach etwa 100 Pfund Mürre.

Then Nikodemus comes along and simply buys about 100 pounds of myrrh.

Das wurde mit Aloe gemischt und das war dann nochmal speziell für die Einbalsamierung bei Jesus.

This was mixed with aloe, and then it was specifically for the embalming of Jesus.

Genutzt worden.

Has been used.

Wie oder wofür wird Mürre denn heute verwendet?

How or for what is myrrh used today?

Also Parfum spielt eine richtig große Rolle, gerade für die etwas dunkleren Parfums,

So perfume plays a really big role, especially for the darker perfumes.

wo es dann eben als harte und dunkle Kopfnote verwendet wird.

where it is then used as a strong and dark top note.

Und das andere ist sehr gerne natürlich in der hämopathischen, in der naturheilkundlichen Medizin.

And the other is very much of course in homeopathic, in natural healing medicine.

Da wird es heute wirklich bei vielen Arzneimitteln, die auf hämopathische und auch auf naturkundliche Sache hergestellt werden, verwandt.

Today, this is indeed used in many medicines that are made from homeopathic and also herbal remedies.

Hauptsächlich aber bei Darmentzündungen.

Mainly in the case of intestinal inflammations.

Jetzt haben wir erfahren, dass Jesus nach seinem Tod damit gesalbt wurde und darauf verweist doch auch der Name Christus, oder?

Now we have learned that Jesus was anointed after his death, and the name Christ also refers to that, doesn't it?

Das ist wirklich das interessante Wort Christus, der Gesalbte, so heißt es eben im Griechischen.

That is really the interesting word Christ, the Anointed One, as it is called in Greek.

Und dieser alte Begriff für Mürre heißt Smyrna, die Stadt haben viele schon mal gehört, liegt in der heutigen Türkei, was dann auch der Gesalbte heißt.

And this old term for myrrh is Smyrna, a city that many have heard of, located in present-day Turkey, which also means the Anointed One.

Also es ist tatsächlich dieses Wort, was Salbung heißt.

So it is indeed this word that means anointing.

In der griechischen Mythologie taucht das auch öfter mal auf, aber eben in der Bibel Christus, der Gesalbte, mit der Mürre im Einklang, wo das dann das gleiche Wort für ist.

In Greek mythology, this occurs more often, but in the Bible, Christ, the Anointed One, is in harmony with myrrh, where the same word is used.

Also das ist schon spannend.

So that's exciting.

Das finde ich auch, wenn man so Ulf Lückl zuhört, das waren interessante Einblicke in die Mürre-Symbolik von eben Pastor Ulf Lückl aus dem niedersächsischen Amelungsborn.

I agree, when you listen to Ulf Lückl, those were interesting insights into the Mürre symbolism of Pastor Ulf Lückl from Amelungsborn in Lower Saxony.

In der Bibel, da tauchen ja immer wieder Pflanzen und Kräuter auf, die eben eine starke Symbolkraft besitzen.

In the Bible, there are repeatedly plants and herbs that have a strong symbolic power.

Ich denke da zum Beispiel an den Olivenbaum, der ja seit Jahrtausenden schon vielfältig genutzt wurde und auch wird, kultiviert wird.

I am thinking, for example, of the olive tree, which has been utilized in various ways for thousands of years and continues to be cultivated.

Da gibt es ja die Oliven, dann das Olivenöl für Speisen, das kann aber auch zur Körperpflege verwendet werden, zur Einbalsamierung.

There are the olives, then the olive oil for foods, which can also be used for body care, for embalming.

Wir haben es gerade gehört.

We just heard it.

Aber auch als eben eine wichtige Substanz bei der Herstellung von Parfüm.

But also as an important substance in the production of perfume.

Und in der Bibel, da spielt der Olivenbaum oder der Ölbaum ja auch immer wieder eine wichtige Rolle.

And in the Bible, the olive tree or oil tree plays an important role again and again.

Beispielsweise als Noah die Taube aussendet, die dann mit einem Ölzweig im Stabel zurückkehrt und eben symbolisiert und zeigt, dass das Ende der Sintflut gekommen ist, Land in Sicht ist.

For example, when Noah sends out the dove, which then returns with an olive branch in its beak, it symbolizes and indicates that the end of the flood has come, and land is in sight.

Der Olivenbaum ist in der Tat ein wichtiges Symbol im Biblischen.

The olive tree is indeed an important symbol in the Bible.

Im Biblischen Zusammenhang sehr anschaulich konnte das Heike Glede erklären, mit der ich über verschiedene Symboliken von Pflanzen in der Bibel gesprochen habe.

Heike Glede was able to explain it very vividly in a biblical context, with whom I talked about the various symbolisms of plants in the Bible.

Heike Glede ist Pastorin in der Johannes-der-Täufer-Kirchengemeinde im niedersächsischen Horstädt, etwa 35 Kilometer von Bremen entfernt.

Heike Glede is a pastor in the John the Baptist Church community in Horstädt, Lower Saxony, about 35 kilometers from Bremen.

Und dort gibt es einen Bibelgarten, der 2003 entstanden ist.

And there is a Bible garden that was created in 2003.

Das muss man jetzt mal kurz erklären, was das ist, ein Bibelgarten.

This needs to be briefly explained what it is, a Bible garden.

Ja, letztlich geht es darum.

Yes, ultimately it's about that.

Mit Pflanzen und Symbolen die biblische Geschichte nachzuerzählen.

To retell the biblical story with plants and symbols.

Und in dem Gespräch hat Heike Glede zu mir gesagt, dass der Gang durch diesen Bibelgarten im Grunde wie ein großer Gottesdienst ist.

And in the conversation, Heike Glede said to me that walking through this Bible garden is basically like a big church service.

Das fand ich irgendwie total schön, mir das so vorzustellen.

I thought it was somehow really beautiful to imagine it that way.

Ich war nicht selber vor Ort.

I was not on site myself.

Und neben vielen anderen Pflanzen wurde dort auch ein Olivenbaum gepflanzt.

And alongside many other plants, an olive tree was also planted there.

Der Weg Jesu ist natürlich einer, der ein Leidensweg am Ende ja auch ist.

The way of Jesus is certainly one that is ultimately a path of suffering.

Und darauf ist also im Bibelgarten dann auch besonders eingegangen.

And this is therefore particularly addressed in the Bible garden.

Also da gibt es dann eine Station, Garten Gethsemane.

So there is a station called Garden of Gethsemane.

Gethsemane ist ein Ölgarten und da steht dann als einzige Pflanze ein Olivenbaum dort, der ja auch wieder eine tiefe Symbolik hat.

Gethsemane is an olive garden, and there stands as the only plant an olive tree, which also has a deep symbolism.

Es war nicht nur in einem Olivenhain, wo Jesus dieses innigste Gebet gesprochen hat.

It was not only in an olive grove where Jesus uttered this most intimate prayer.

Vater, lass diesen Kelch an mir vorübergehen.

Father, let this cup pass from me.

Aus Oliven wird auch Olivenöl gemacht, wird auch Balsam gemacht, der dann wieder Wunden heilen soll zum Beispiel.

Olives are also made into olive oil, and balsam is made, which is supposed to heal wounds, for example.

Da hat man wieder den Bezug zu den Leiden Jesu.

There we have the connection to the sufferings of Jesus again.

Also unter einem Olivenbaum betet er zu Gott und wird von Gott gestärkt und getröstet.

So under an olive tree, he prays to God and is strengthened and comforted by God.

Pflanzen spielen ja in der Bibel eine große Rolle, sind eben auch symbolisch zu sehen oder sie werden eben herangezogen, um Gleichnisse zu erzählen.

Plants play a significant role in the Bible, as they are also seen symbolically or are used to convey parables.

Und zu den bekanntesten gehört wahrscheinlich das Senfkorn-Gleichnis, wo praktisch Jesus auf das kleinste Samenkorn, das er kennt, verweist und auch sagt,

And among the most well-known is probably the mustard seed parable, where Jesus essentially refers to the smallest seed he knows and also says,

dass aus etwas ganz Kleines.

that out of something very small.

Nämlich aus einem Senfkorn etwas ganz Großes, nämlich ein meterhoher Baum entstehen kann und dass eben auch eine Wachstumsgeschichte in der Bibel hier beschrieben wird, symbolisch natürlich auch steht für den wachsenden Glauben an Gott und auch an die Hoffnung, dass eben aus ganz kleinen Dingen trotzdem ganz große entstehen können, auch wenn man das denen am Anfang vielleicht gar nicht ansieht.

Namely, something very large, namely a meter-high tree, can grow from a mustard seed, and that a growth story is described in the Bible here, which symbolically stands for the growing faith in God and also for the hope that very great things can arise from very small things, even if one may not see this in the beginning.

Über Gleichnisse habe ich mit Heike Glede auch gesprochen und da hat sie auch was ganz Spannendes zu gesagt.

I also talked about parables with Heike Glede, and she had something really interesting to say about it.

Er hat auch das Gleichnis vom Feigenbaum erzählt, vom Feigenbaum, der keine Früchte bringen wollte und derjenige, der diesen Feigenbaum gepflanzt hat, gesagt hat, ich haue ihn um.

He also told the parable of the fig tree, of the fig tree that did not want to bear fruit, and the one who planted this fig tree said, I will cut it down.

Und der Gärtner aber sagt, nee, komm, lass uns nochmal ihm eine Chance geben.

And the gardener says, no, come on, let's give him another chance.

So steht der Feigenbaum für Gottes erbarmende Gnade oder in der Bergpredigt, da sagt Jesus, warum sorgt ihr euch um eure Kleidung, schaut die Lilien auf dem Feld an, wie sie wachsen.

Thus, the fig tree represents God's merciful grace, or in the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus says, why do you worry about your clothing? Look at the lilies of the field, how they grow.

Und die Lilie, die ist ja auch eine hochsymbolische Pflanze, Sinnbild für die Reinheit des Herzens.

And the lily is also a highly symbolic plant, a symbol of the purity of the heart.

In kleinen Dingen kann man Gottes Güte erkennen, so wie in einer Lilie, die da mit anderen Feldblumen zusammen auf einer Wiese wächst zum Beispiel.

In small things, one can recognize God's goodness, just like in a lily that grows alongside other wildflowers in a meadow, for example.

Die Lilienwurzel, wurden auch Salben hergestellt, die Lilie ist aber heute nicht mehr so anerkannt, die Rose aber schon noch.

The lily root was also used to make ointments, but the lily is no longer as recognized today, whereas the rose still is.

Was uns im Grunde zu unserem nächsten Thema bringt, nämlich dem Gebrauch von Kräutern und Pflanzen im medizinischen Zusammenhang zur unterstützenden Heilung.

What essentially brings us to our next topic, namely the use of herbs and plants in a medical context for supportive healing.

Ja, mich hat bei der Recherche unter anderem auch die Frage beschäftigt, wie die Wissenschaft sich mit Kräutermedizin auseinandersetzt.

Yes, during my research I was also occupied with the question of how science engages with herbal medicine.

Dabei bin ich auf die Forschergruppe Klostermedizin in Würzburg gestoßen.

In the process, I came across the research group on monastery medicine in Würzburg.

Eine Gruppe aus Pharmazeuten, Historikern, Botanikern und Medizinern, die alte Schriften aus den Klöstern transkribieren und übersetzen.

A group of pharmacists, historians, botanists, and medical professionals who transcribe and translate ancient manuscripts from the monasteries.

Sie identifizieren alte Rezepturen, probieren die auch mal im Labor aus.

They identify old recipes and also try them out in the lab.

Und Tobias Niedenthal ist Koordinator dieser Gruppe und der konnte mir bei dieser Frage weiterhelfen.

And Tobias Niedenthal is the coordinator of this group, and he was able to help me with this question.

Also heute gehen wir da über die Inhaltsstoffe, wir haben die ganzen Pflanzen analysiert, wir wissen was da drin ist.

So today we are going through the ingredients, we have analyzed all the plants, we know what's in it.

Wir wissen auch grundsätzlich, was diese Inhaltsstoffe machen.

We also generally know what these ingredients do.

Auf welche gefährlich sind, also die wir vielleicht nicht so oft oder überhaupt nicht mehr einnehmen wollen.

On which dangers are there, that we might not want to take as often or at all anymore.

Und es gibt relativ wenige große Studien, aber es ist doch naturwissenschaftlich plausibel oder auch zum Teil erwiesen,

And there are relatively few large studies, but it is nonetheless scientifically plausible or even partially proven.

dass wenn wir Gerbstoffe haben in der Pflanze, dann ist das gut bei den Wunden, weil das desinfiziert und die Wundheilung fördert.

That when we have tannins in the plant, it is good for wounds because it disinfects and promotes wound healing.

Solche Sachen wissen wir schon, auch wenn wir jetzt im Einzelfall nicht eine ganz große Studie haben,

dass jetzt ein Auszug aus Salbei die Wundheilung wirklich fördert.

Gerade in der Klostermedizin.

Especially in monastery medicine.

Bei der berühmtesten Vertreterin, bei der Hildegard von Wingen, haben wir da eine Vielzahl von Anwendungen des Salbeis, viel mehr als bei anderen Autoren der Zeit.

With the most famous representative, Hildegard von Bingen, we have a multitude of applications of sage, far more than with other authors of the time.

Sie hat den Salbe recht vielseitig eingenutzt, innerlich und äußerlich.

She has used the ointment quite versatilely, both internally and externally.

Einerseits bei Verdauungsbeschwerden oder auch bei Husten, da machen wir das heute noch genauso äußerlich.

On one hand, in cases of digestive complaints or even coughs, we still do it the same way externally today.

Bei leichten Entzündungen, da ist das immer noch anerkannt.

In case of mild inflammation, that is still recognized.

Aber sie hat ihn sogar für, fast schon in Richtung Psychiatrie gehend eingesetzt und das ist natürlich damals ein bisschen anders zu verstehen als heute.

But she even deployed him almost in the direction of psychiatry, and of course that is understood a bit differently today than it was back then.

Aber wir forschen dran, den auch bei dem ins Einsatz setzen, weil der eventuell positive Effekte hat.

Ja, ich gebe einfach meine eigenen Erfahrungen weiter.

Yes, I simply share my own experiences.

Das heißt, ich muss es ja genauso tun.

That means I have to do it just the same.

Das Wissen um die Pflanzen nimmt mir nicht ab, jetzt konkret mit ihnen etwas zu unternehmen oder sie auch zu betrachten.

The knowledge about the plants does not take away from me the ability to do something concrete with them now or to observe them.

Das ist ja schon einmal ein erster Schritt, dass ich mir Zeit nehme für eine Pflanze,

That is already a first step that I take time for a plant,

dass ich eben im Stress,

that I'm just stressed,

des Alltags jetzt einmal aussteige und einfach nur schaue, nur da bleibe und einmal auch rein visuell die Pflanze auf mich wirken lasse.

I now step out of everyday life and simply observe, just stay there and let the plant have an effect on me visually.

Könnten Sie denn da mal ein paar Beispiele nennen von Pflanzen, die uns gut tun,

Could you provide a few examples of plants that are good for us?

die wir vielleicht sogar im Garten haben, aber in unserem Alltag übersehen?

that we might even have in the garden, but overlook in our everyday lives?

Ja, da gibt es natürlich die Klassiker.

Yes, there are of course the classics.

Der Löwenzahn ist da, wenn der auf einem sauberen Standort steht, dann kann ich jeweils die jungen Blätter hernehmen,

The dandelion is there; when it is in a clean location, I can take the young leaves each time.

und tue sie einfach in den Salat hinein.

And just put them in the salad.

Also wenn ich einen grünen Salat habe, dann eben den Salat ergänzen und damit nehme ich schon die wertvollen Bitterstoffe auf.

So if I have a green salad, I can add to the salad and in doing so, I already absorb the valuable bitter substances.

Oder das andere Beispiel ist der Spitzwegerich, den viele kennen als Hustenkraut.

Or another example is the plantago, which many know as cough herb.

Der Spitzwegerich lässt sich genauso die jungen Blätter auch in einen Salat hineintun oder dann zu einem Tee aufgießen.

The ribwort plantain's young leaves can also be added to a salad or brewed into a tea.

Und dieser Tee ist dann wiederum nervenstärkend, denn der Spitzwegerich ist ein Bewältiger,

And this tea is also soothing for the nerves, because the plantain is a coping agent.

Ein drittes Beispiel ist das Gänseblümchen, das fast überall wächst.

Und da garniere ich mir zum Beispiel ein Butterbrot und etwas hübsch herrichten, auch beim Essen.

Das bedeutet ja gleichzeitig auch eben die Schönheit ins Leben übertragen

Die Rückbesinnung des Menschen auf die Heilkraft der Natur, das ist ja für Sie auch Seelsorge. Inwiefern?

The return of humanity to the healing power of nature is also pastoral care for you. In what way?

Der Mensch selber darf sich, wenn er sich mit der Natur auseinandersetzt, wieder als ein Teil eines großen Ganzen erfahren.

The person themselves, when engaging with nature, is allowed to experience themselves again as part of a greater whole.

Und als Teil stehe ich jetzt nicht mehr isoliert da, sondern ich fühle mich geborgen.

And as a part, I no longer stand isolated, but I feel secure.

Die Pflanzen zeigen, signalisieren mir eine Präsenz.

The plants show, signal to me a presence.

Also Kräuterkunde und Seelsorge, die gehen ineinander, gerade in der Tradition der Klostermedizin.

Herb knowledge and pastoral care are interconnected, especially in the tradition of monastery medicine.

Welche Kräuter würden Sie denn zur aktuellen Jahreszeit zur Unterstützung empfehlen, mit Blick auf den Herbst?

Which herbs would you recommend for support in the current season, considering autumn?

Für den Herbst sind natürlich die getrockneten Kräuter dann da.

Of course, the dried herbs will be available for the fall.

In verschiedensten Teemischungen kann ich etwas dazu tun, um den Herbst und den darauffolgenden Winter auch gut zu bestehen.

In various tea blends, I can contribute something to also get through the autumn and the following winter well.

Da sind schon die Atemwege natürlich gefragt. Also was tut den Atemwegen gut?

The airways are of course put to the test. So what is good for the airways?

Ich habe schon den Spitzwegerich genannt.

I have already mentioned the ribwort plantain.

Aber es sind auch die verschiedenen Malvengewächse, also dazu Zetaeibisch oder auch die Hibiskusblüten

But there are also the different mallow plants, such as rose mallow or hibiscus flowers.

oder die Stoppenblüten.

or the stop flowers.

Die Schockrose, die haben auch alle einen Anteil von Schleimstoffen.

The shock rose, they all have a share of mucilaginous substances.

Also die tun einmal den Atemwegen gut.

So they are good for the respiratory system.

Ich finde, wenn man dem Kräuterpfarrer Benedikt so zuhört, dann kann einem auch schon bewusst werden,

dass es durchaus so ist.

Dass es durchaus einfacher sein kann, als man denkt, dem Körper durchaus auch was Gutes zu tun

Ich denke, das kann am besten Tobias Niedenthal von der Forschergruppe Klostermedizin selbst beantworten.

I think that can best be answered by Tobias Niedenthal from the Research Group on Monastic Medicine himself.

Die Sachen, die heute noch angewendet werden, also seit tausend oder zweitausend Jahren durchgehend,

The things that are still in use today, that have been continuously used for a thousand or two thousand years,

das ist dann den Leuten zum großen Teil überhaupt nicht bewusst.

That is largely not at all conscious for the people.

Ich glaube, so richtig bewusst wird jetzt speziell die Klostermedizin gar nicht mehr angewendet.

I don't think that monastery medicine is really consciously applied anymore.

Es gibt natürlich die sogenannte Hildegard-Medizin.

Of course, there is the so-called Hildegard medicine.

Die ist seit 50 Jahren, aber das ist leider mehr Marketing, als dass man sich dort tatsächlich auf Hildegard bezieht.

This has been the case for 50 years, but unfortunately, that is more marketing than an actual reference to Hildegard.

Also das, was dort propagiert wird, das findet sich bei Hildegard so gar nicht.

So what is being propagated there is not found at all in Hildegard.

Und jetzt haben wir aber doch gehört, dass die Anwendung von Kräutern und Pflanzen auch bei Krankheiten ein wichtiges Thema ist.

And now we have indeed heard that the use of herbs and plants is also an important topic in the treatment of diseases.

Und ja, viele Menschen das auch sammeln, auch Kräuter kaufen.

And yes, many people collect that too, including buying herbs.

Gibt es denn da so eine Art Revival bei der Klostermedizin?

Is there a kind of revival in monastery medicine?

Im Grunde haben wir diese Rückbesinnung ja schon seit 200 Jahren.

Basically, we have been reflecting on this for 200 years.

Also seit der Industrialisierung, das ist ja die Romantik, dass man aus den Städten aufs Land geht,

So since the industrialization, that's the Romantic idea of going from the cities to the countryside,

um sich da scheinbar dem ländlichen Leben zu widmen.

to seemingly dedicate oneself to rural life there.

Also ich würde jetzt nicht sagen, dass das wirklich eine grundsätzlich neue Renaissance ist,

Well, I wouldn't say that this is really a fundamentally new renaissance.

sondern dass das einfach seit der Industrialisierung dauerhaft da ist und mal mehr und mal weniger.

but that it has simply been there permanently since the industrialization, sometimes more and sometimes less.

Ja, nach diesen vielen Informationen über die Kräuter würde ich gerne zum Schluss noch einmal in den Bibelgarten nach Horschstedt zu Heike Glede springen.

Die unser Gespräch über die Symbolik von Pflanzen sehr passend beendet hat, nämlich so.

Und da fährt das eben nochmal wieder, diese Liebe Gottes, die einfach auch immer da ist und uns immer begleitet in unserem Leben.

And there it goes again, this love of God that is simply always there and accompanies us throughout our lives.

Und unser Leben.

And our life.

Und das eben bunt und schön und vielfältig macht.

And that makes it colorful, beautiful, and diverse.

Das heißt, es ist schon deutlich geworden, wie sich diese alten Traditionen auch erhalten haben, welchen Nutzen auch Kräuter haben können.

This means that it has already become clear how these old traditions have been preserved and what benefits herbs can also have.

Und dass viele Menschen eben auch auf dieses jahrtausendealte Wissen vertrauen,

And that many people trust in this millennia-old knowledge,

dass sich die Kräuter, Pflanzen als Symbole auch in der Bibel wiederfinden

that herbs and plants can also be found as symbols in the Bible

und dass eben auch vieles Gutes und Heilsames in der Natur praktisch vorliegt.

and that much good and healing is practically present in nature.

Ja, man muss im Grunde nur die Augen offen halten.
